Oh well, I'll throw in some thoughts too. I'm guessing Brett discovered Jewel and had an aching for her (whether it originated in the heart or the groin is not my point), but there's not much he can do about it, is there? He's in New York(?) and she's in California or on the road. She doesn't even know he exists. Posting to the list was his only way of getting attention (and obviously it worked very well). In the dating game (especially when played out on frat territory), I've often seen that the guy who stands out, who makes an impression (even or especially if it's a negative one), is usually more successful than more sensitive types who may not have the courage to just say hi. The woman may be turned off, but the guy has the rest of the night to convince her that he's "really not like that at all". I'm not suggesting that this Brett guy actually hoped to get a response out of Jewel for this, but it may be a spillover from his usual habits. From the little we have learned from his posts, it seems obvious that he is not Jewel's (or any woman's?) type, so it probably wouldn't matter if Jewel did meet him. Oops, more incoming Brett posts. Hmm, is he in phase two here already? Or maybe he really isn't so bad after all? Disclaimer: Of course this is all just pure speculation on my part. It's one thing to criticize her work, which I think is the opposite of what this list is for, but then to speak for all of us, in an offensive and "male" manner, and then have the nerve to say that he didn't, when some of us may still have that message saved is ridiculous. When I was at the Washington & Lee show in Lexington, VA back in February, she seemed to be very annoyed at the way she was treated by the some of the men, especially one who kept saying "man, she's f*@&in' hot" really loud--and this was show was NOT crowded at all. There was another dork who screamed, "Jewel, I love you!". You think that this guy was talking about her music? Methinks not. He didn't even know the correct title to WWSYS--he called it, "Save My Soul." Also, listen to GGTW. I think that her point of view on this matter may be expressed quite well in this lovely little tune. Also, I don't care if Brett thinks that she's hot. It's just the way that he said it that pissed me off. Sounded way too similar to what I hear when guys talk about going out with a woman just for her looks and not for the beauty she holds on the inside. Joan Osborne is a great singer and song writer. Her music is her own distinction. I have yet to here music quite like hers. A lot of her songs have a great hint of the blues in it. Her writing style is a little like Bob Dylan's, and she even covers one of his songs (Man In The Long Black Coat). If you do not like the blues, then I guess I could see why you wouldn't her. And if you don't like her lyrics, I could also see why. Not everybody likes music that makes sense. And for her looks, she is pretty good looking. And I personally think that her nose ring is pretty darn snifty. And if your into the preppy looking style, then I could see why you wouldn't like the way she looks.
