And just look at the pictures in the Forever Blue album... Everyone is talking about Somewhere over the rainbow that Jewel sings on Oz. Guess what song Tori Amos has been doing as part of her set on her new tour. :) Whoever said that it wasn't the touring that made Pieces of You more popular... would you care to tell us exactly what it was. don't sat the inherent goodness of Jewel's music or sometimes it takes time to recognize talent. Cause while that is nice, you have to hear someone or at least hear of them if you plan to buy their album... As far as what Tanky said: >I, for one, wrote an anti-war song, never having >experienced war myself. It doesn't prevent me from feeling the >emotions war may have on me generated from just reading and hearing >about it, does it? No, it doesn't prevent you from feeling the emotions. Although i agree with you it could be said that someone who actually went thru a war might feel stronger emotions. You on the other hand might be better at expressing your emotions thru song. KSPS in spokane just had a fund-raiser and didn't >include Oz in there programming. Well, maybe in the fall. Yeah, maybe. You can pretty much count on not seeing it until beg-fest time, at which point you'd better roll a tape. I can't tell you how many times I've turned down the TV during PBS's pathetic 20-minute pledge breaks, only to become distracted with something else and miss the end of the show. It's not so much that I mind them asking for donations, but the length of their breaks is far worse than sitting through a commercial break on a normal channel. On top of that, the brainless hosts with their condescending speeches and the sterotypical phones ringing through the break make me wish that no one donate a dime until they rethink their approach. I don't know why at the very least they can't reduce the breaks to 3 or 4 minutes, and add a couple extra breaks if necessary. At least the interruptions would become more tolerable. Anyway, Wizard Of Oz never didn't make it to Detroit's PBS station, their beg drive is already over which means we don't get the good stuff til next time. Why anyone donates anyway when the best shows are always riddled with pledge interruptions is beyond me, but I guess some people like PBS enough to put up with it, and I suppose I shouldn't be stirring up a PBS debate on this list. Hopefully a video will become available at stores soon, commercial and plead-free at a more affordable price. TNT is outlawed in Canada by our government (got me on a roll tonight!) so I still haven't seen it. Derek Mok <4dm@qlink.queensu.ca> wrote: > Pieces Of You has climbed back onto #12 on Billboard's Heatseekers! > > Touring and exposure finally paying off, huh? As I understand it, what has happened is KROQ in LA added the song for some reason. LA is a very influential market. MTV followed by adding the video, and the single has been re-serviced to radio. Lots of stations that missed WWSYS seem to be catching it this time around. Billboard and other trade magazines report the increased airplay and resulting sales, and away you go. The question is, why did KROQ pick up on it now? I don't know. Which got me thinking, there are a lot of people on here who would love to have a complete tape of one of those shows. I can't go to any of them, but here's some wishful thinking that someone will tape one. Obviously it's not a good idea to count your chickens before they get taped, but if someone manages to get a copy of one of the shows that's good quality, we can run a tree of it right away. I know I'd kill for it. So all you tapers out there, especially ones planning on going to one of those shows, try your hardest to get a great copy of that show, and we'll tree it when you get back (assuming you don't get caught that is). ---------K e n---------- <> walden@bluefin.net http://www.bluefin.net/~wink "You must live as you think, or sooner or later you will think as you live." ------------------------------ From: "Ken Winchenbach" Date: Mon, 1 Apr 1996 09:06:47 +0000 Subject: Tape Trees Well, the Innerchange Days tape tree was satisfactory I think. We had some problems with communication between branches and leaves, but they got cleared up (if there is anyone out there who still hasn't been able to get in contact with a branch, let me know). But in general, I think it ran well. Hopefully everyone is excited about running a new tree now. I certainly am. The last discussion about Jewel having a career like Dylan's got me on a kick. Imagine if we are still sitting around talking about Jewel thirty years from now, except now there's a thousand of us on the list. We certainly will wish we had a lot of tapes from those early days. So I encourage us to work hard now, I think we'll appreciate it in the future. Things like the Lyric Transcription, the concert database I'm trying to keep, and tape treeing are going to reap a lot of benefits for all of us. So anyway, my point is, let's get taping. I know there are a lot of us on the list taping concerts. Luckily a few of us are working on Radio Angels (the Rare Angels sequel), so we have that to look forward to. And we're still working on the video tree, I'm looking forward to that. What we need is for some people with masters of some concerts to come forward and tree them. I wouldn't reccomend posting that you have a master, because you will then be inundated with requests. That's why a tree is a better solution to my mind. If someone is interested in running a tree, please get in contact with me. I can help get you in contact with the branches and so forth. Or do it by yourself, as long as you do it. But my point is if you want to distribute a tape, but don't want your mailbox flooded, we should arrange a tree. I ran the last one with Christopher, and we had an awful lot of good branches, so I don't think that will be a problem. All we need are tapes. There must be some great tapes out there. Did anyone tape the show with the Rugburns? Or one with a lot of new songs, or a lot of great versions of songs? I've got another idea too, but I'll post it separately, because no one will read this far into the note.... Please contact me, let's tree the shows! ---------K e n---------- <> walden@bluefin.net http://www.bluefin.net/~wink "You must live as you think, or sooner or later you will think as you live." ------------------------------ From: "Ken Winchenbach" Date: Mon, 1 Apr 1996 08:48:56 +0000 Subject: Re: Q: Define Jewel's Music > Okay. Jewel tells us that most of her songs are not based on her own life. Imagining does not make you "fake". I think what Jewel means when she describes her music as honest is that she's writing from her heart. She's writing what she wants to express, she's writing for expression's sake. Maybe what makes some artists fake is that they are writing what other people want to hear. Jewel writes whatever is coming out of her. So she is honest to herself, and to her own muse. Some people don't listen to their muse, they listen to critics, and fans, and opinions, and Billboard lists. That's my take on it. ---------K e n---------- <> walden@bluefin.net http://www.bluefin.net/~wink "You must live as you think, or sooner or later you will think as you live." ------------------------------ From: "Ken Winchenbach" Date: Mon, 1 Apr 1996 08:48:56 +0000 Subject: Re: Tori tickets for New Haven > Hey guys... What the hell is a tape tree? I've never thought enough of an artist to join a listserve based entirely on one artist, which show how much I like Jewel to be a member here. :) From what I have gathered reading the messages, this tape tree thing is just a bunch of people "sharing" any and all recordings they may have of the artist (this one being Jewel). Is it that simple? Now here's a little survey. How many of you guys (or girls for that matter... just a joke) feel as though Jewel is singing the Morning Song directly to you? That's just how great her voice is to make us feel that way. And while I'm asking: How many of you WISH she was singing it directly to you? Give up Jewel! There's only > >one Juliana you sorry poseur!!! Okay, a two-part rebuttal from me, who likes both Juliana and Jewel. a) Musical theory. The accusation of this particular person is exactly the type that Scott Weiland of Stone Temple Pilots got. People accused him of imitating Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam. What I say is, if you got a certain type of voice and use it a certain way, that doesn't mean you're necessarily imitating. Juliana doesn't have the monopoly on the sweet storytelling voice nor should she. You can say Juliana and Jewel may have similar voices (I think Jewel's is better trained but that's more speculation) but you can't say for sure one's imitating the other, right? To quote Christian Slater when accused of imitating Jack Nicholson: "What am I supposed to do? Shave off my eyebrows?" b) Even if imitation did exist, so what? Musical styles are there to be admired, and to inspire others. Juliana should be flattered if Jewel was emulating her, and personally I don't get the feeling Jewel is emulating Juliana anyway. Their musical styles are quite different. Juliana is rougher around the edges and her vocals are even sweeter, more nasal than Jewel's. Jewel also has more of a folk sensibility like Neil Young, Tom Petty and Crosby, Stills, Nash whereas Juliana belongs in the Throwing Muses/Pixies school. Maybe what makes some artists fake is that they > are writing what other people want to hear. Frankly, I don't see anything wrong with that. Some artists may, out of a sense of self-consciousness, want elation and want people to like them. So they write what people want to hear. Whether you like it or not, of course, is up to you. But I don't believe it's anything to criticize objectively. > coming out of her. So she is honest to herself, and to her own muse. > Some people don't listen to their muse, they listen to critics, and > fans, and opinions, and Billboard lists. That's my take on it. Again, I don't think it a crime to want bigger album sales -- even though I certainly think artistic merit and commercialism can co-exist, with some effort. Let's be real, music is a business in America. If not, we wouldn't get such a large group of artists and talent in it. It's a huge problem, for example, with the Canadian film industry -- it's not handled as a BUSINESS, and business is what makes a certain area flourish and come to life.
