OK, now personally I'm fascinated to see what happens when Jewel gets with a band. Having heard the stories of her with the rugburns in San Diego, it should be a whole different side of her for me. Maybe the band will actually be the rugburns. That might be interesting. I picked up their album for 99 cents. (Quite a deal) It's pretty decent. Steve's a good songwriter, even though he sometimes seems to lack Jewel's emotional depth, often prefering a scatalogical, stream of conciousness style. Not that there is anything wrong with that. Hey, Neile, how could you forget The Nields and - wait for it - the jehova waitresses? Some of you may wonder what the above has to do with Jewel. Besides, he does have a point, and it has nothing to do with having an African-American man playing guitar in a pop group. Musically, Hootie is about as innovative and interesting as Neil Diamond or Barry Manilow, but those people are musicians following a very different path from say, Parliment, Wilson Pickett, or the Full-Tilt Boogie Band. Calling one music "white" and the other "black" may be hazardous around your p.c. sensibilities, but that's no reason to get hostile. You're being offended by someone that wasn't being offensive, that's all. Maybe we could settle on "soft pop" versus "r&b" or something. Whatever the case, Greg's comment didn't seem to deserve that much of a counter-attack. Moving t then she sings the blues and yodels. It's like Neil Young- Jewel's music. I hope that I can go to it either by working the show or buying a ticket, although it might be expensive. ah the land of missed opportunities. Dylan played here at Amherst College a year or two or three ago (the people who attended said that it was pretty disappointing); if I had the ability to bend time and circumstances, the two Dylan shows would switch place so that he and Jewel would play here. but no, I only have the power to be omnipotent. sigh. And, we can't even try to get Jewel when she tours with the band in May because we already got a bunch a shows here through the beginning of May and to put a show during May would be a baaad idea, what with finals and stuff happenning (oh great. now I can't even sppeeel). And another of my favorite performers, Susan Werner, contacted us about playing here soon, and we can't fit her in either. Oh well, at least we have the Spinanes (yay) coming this Thursday, the God Rays this Saturday, Cowboy Junkies/Shawn Colvin (woohoo!) and special guest coming on the 20th of April, Patty Larkin (yipee!) on the 21st of April, the Nields on the 1st of May and Acoustic Junction somedate else. Why am I complaining:) I watched and taped the VH1 Vail thing and I thought it was cool that she did non-album stuff. The abridged version of Racecar (oh palindrome) Driver was jolting, much like (as a friend of mine recently pointed out) the "new" version of YWMFM, because it sounds wrong cutting out the bits of the songs after you've listened to the original a googleplex number of times. It's like a bastardized version. no it's not "like," it is. Stupid drug simile. And the Chime Bells Ring (or is it Chiming Bells) seemed to lack fun and heart, but Jewel has to be excused due to the circumstances. Anyways, she just didn't seem to be getting a response from the crowd, as evidenced by her rushing right into the first of the speeded up yodels. If I were there, I woulda knocked all those lazy bums in the crowd down dancing around and whooping it up (sure you would have, Paul. And maybe you're the President of the US) Don't forget in your list of women and bands to listen to, Once Blue, October Project, Dar Williams, Joan Baez, Paula Cole, Over the Rhine, Cowboy Junkies, Holly Cole, Emmylou Harris, PJ Harvey, Melissa Ferrick, and to stretch into the current mainstream (it ain't bad to be mainstream, chickies) Juliana Hatfield, Jill Sobule, Velocity Girl, Dancehall Crashers, Heather Nova (touring in May/June in the US), Enya, Tori, blahblah blah, etc. And it's Sarah McLachlan, not Sarah Mclaghlan or Sarah MGloblin or Sarah McMackman or Hootie and the Blowfish:) and Maria Mckee was an excellent addition by whoever added her.
