The End is where I turn to hear things > like Pearl Jam and Nine Inch Nails;) I really doubt they played Vanessa Williams on The End, your friend was probably telling a joke. As for Jewel, they haven't played much of her music until now, but I think they did play one of her songs a few months back. They kept talking about her when she was playing at the Puss Puss Cafe. Besides, they're owned by the same company that owns 99X or whatever radio station it is in San Diego that first played her. ------------------------------ From: cgraves@electriciti.com (Clarke Graves) Date: Mon, 25 Mar 1996 00:19:09 -0800 Subject: Re: Racist newsgroup proposal alert! regarding the white supremacy group on the net... i agree totally with Greg Vernon about this group. i will not agree one bit with their beliefs but as groups like theirs are denied, all groups begin to lose their freedom on the net. soon the big brother police of cyberville will keep lists like this regulated letter by letter. net freedom will be tested greatly with the white racist situation. mho clarke ------------------------------ From: "Ken Winchenbach" Date: Mon, 25 Mar 1996 09:07:41 +0000 Subject: A Band!..... Well, it's official. She's touring with a band, as we wise Jewel experts suspected. I feel it's our duty as fanatics to now spend the next month speculating as to what the band will be, what songs she'll play with them, and anything else we can wonder about. We (or at least I) heard Jewel mention before that she had been writing songs on electric guitar lately. So that would suggest that she may play at least some songs on the tour on electric. Which would be a total change from what we're used to, not only a band, but an *electric* band. I'm excited about the idea. We've got a lot of songs and material of her playing solo acoustic, so I won't be upset if she moves into another realm. Any guesses as to what songs she'll bring over with her into the electric realm. It's hard to imagine what it'll sound like. I guess some of her harder, non-POY songs would transfer better. We've already heard God's Gift To Women in true garage band style. I wonder if she'll have that type of band, or one more like the Stray Gators on WWSYS? My guess is she'll do mostly new songs in this new format, at least while she's playing electric, if she's going to do that. Anyone else got any ideas?........... ---------K e n---------- <> walden@bluefin.net http://www.bluefin.net/~wink "You must live as you think, or sooner or later you will think as you live." ------------------------------ From: "Ken Winchenbach" Date: Mon, 25 Mar 1996 09:01:54 +0000 Subject: Re: lost mail > Date: Sat, 23 Mar 1996 13:55:13 -0700 (MST) > From: pd MAYN > To: jewel@smoe.org > Subject: lost mail > Hi (whoever you are), > > The E-mail server I use experienced some sort of a failure, resulting in > your message being lost. Who here likes Lisa Loeb? I was more impressed by her performance on Austin City Limits than with that hit single of hers a few years ago. So I want to know if "Tails" is worth owning. I know her voice is not as versatile as Jewel's but it's her guitar abilities and lyric writing I would like to know more about. sabra - -----------------s a b r a r i c h a r d s o n b e d d e s----------------- ------------------------------ From: "Mark Anthony Miazga" Date: Mon, 25 Mar 1996 13:14:38 -0500 (EST) Subject: re: Lisa Loeb (a little off topic) Hi sabra, I think Lisa Loeb is the best, and "Tails" was my pick for album of the year in 1995. She got a great voice, along with masterful guitar playing and lyricizing. "Tails" offers an eclectic mix of folk-rock, full of songs that delightfully juxtapose the best influences of folk and rock. Loeb hasn't gotten much attention since her monster hit "Stay", but "Tails" offers twelve other great, and largely ignored, songs. It is not only worth owning, it is worth stealing. (joke) Also, I own Lisa Loeb's unreleased acoustic tape (entitled the "Purple Tape"), and her pre-production style is remarkably similar to Jewel's, IMO. Producer Juan Patino, who is also Loeb's boyfriend and has produced a version of Jewel's "YWMFM", has been rumored to be producing Jewel's album, but Hirayna said this are not true. However, he is really talented, and helped make Loeb's album a true masterpiece, IMO. I'm sure whoever Jewel picks, it will be a good choice, though... Hope this helps. I got it and listened to it but ultimately decided that the album was ok but nothing exceptional. I'm pretty demanding, I know, but there is so much wonderful music out there I find it hard to recommend stuff that isn't exceptional. Have you explored Happy Rhodes, Tori Amos, Ani Difranco, PJ Harvey, Veda Hille, Jane Siberry, Penelope Houston, Innocence Mission, Heather Nova, Pooka...none of these people are that similar to Jewel except in their individuality, but they (and lots of others!) are definitely worth checking out depending on your tastes. I'm working on a huge compilation of reviews from the Ecto mailing list, called the Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music. We're only on the Bs and Cs right now but eventually this will be a pretty good resource for checking out new music. If you want to see what we have now, take a look at http://weber.u.washington.edu/~neile/EctoGuide/ectoguid.html Please note that the index lists many artists we haven't got reviews up for yet. The genre indexes are your best guide to what pages are there. - --Neile ------------------------------ From: PDeSanti@lmumail.lmu.edu Date: Mon, 25 Mar 1996 11:53:12 -0800 Subject: VH-1 Concert I was unable to see any of the VH-1 Ski special they were running this weekend. Okay I just need to whine and complain for a minute... Why isn't Jewel coming to San Francisco's Tower Records??!! I swear to god I am about ready to hop on a plane for a day trip down to L.A. but lack of funds and my health (got a real bad flu going here) are preventng me! So I just thought I'd tell all you L.A. folks how damn lucky you are! Me and some other list members waited to meet Jewel after her Slim's show last month but because of some maniacal fan who was caught sneaking back stage Jewel opted not to come out. I was bummed that I didn't get a chance to thank her for the great show. Hi Everyody I'm kinda new to the list. I joined up last week but left for spring break right after I joined so I have been catching up on all the mail. I just wanted to say a couple of things. First off, I think Jewel is an awesome singer (of course) and am wondering if she is going to be coming to the Dallas area anytime soon? Second, I was wondering how I could become a part of that tree thing. I would love to have more music by Jewel and would not mind being a branch if needed. Third, I just wanted to say that I learned about Jewel on the mailing list for Milla. She is another awesome artist with a style similair to Jewel's. I recommend her to everyone. So you see, Jewel is coming up in a lot of mailing lists. She is going to be a big star soon. Well, it's not much but I thought ya might want to know that Jewel's name is mentioned in the Sean Penn article in the new Rolling Stone. Something about the press stalking them on dates I believe. Speaking of Sean, I hope you have got your fingers crossed for him to win tonight - after all, he is probably the most famous "everyday angel" (probably the first time anyone has used his name and that word in the same sentence ;) ). Joanne P.S. Seattlites might want to know that they can not only hear Jewel on "The End", but also on 92.9 FM "Independent Rock". ------------------------------ From: Gerald John Cho Date: Mon, 25 Mar 1996 19:38:13 -0600 (CST) Subject: Jewel on radio?
