Bob Dylan I got interested in Jewel by an odd set of circumstances. First, one of my favorite people is named Jewell. So, the article my daughter's Seventeen magazine caught my eye, and it said she went to Interlochen. Well, I've got a friend whose daughter goes to Interlochen. These connections made me curious, and as I read more about Jewel and finally got POY. I became a fan. I was impressed with the honesty of here lyrics and her vocal range, not only in octaves but also in emotion. Anyway, the Interlochen student hadn't heard of Jewel until her father played POY for her a couple of days ago. She said she could tell Jewel was from that school because she sounded a lot like every other girl there who sings and plays guitar. I'm not sure if that's an indictment or an endorsement. What about Bob? Perhaps being 45 and growing up with his music gives me a biased perspective. But, I don't think a singer/songwriter in the folk/alternative genre could receive a greater tribute than being likened to Bob Dylan. I think Jewel's first CD was (pardon me) a diamond in the rough and I can't wait to hear her new stuff. It should be more realized, but hopefully not TOO polished. I like her edges. I heard Jewel singing WWSYS at quarter to ten this morning on VH-1, so I guess an earlier post about her getting more airplay was true. I haven't seen the new MTV remix version I heard about though. Has anyone else? And while I'm here, I have another story to share. I saw Jewel about a month and a half ago, but I was one of the unlucky ones who missed out on a t-shirt. At least I didn't miss her in concert like my envious friend. Anyway, he went home to San Diego for spring break and I told him about the Spreckles show there. He was really hoping to see it and I was hoping to get a t-shirt out of the deal. I was afraid he wasn't going to get a ticket though, 'cuz he was only flying in the day before. Well, it turns out that he could have probably gotten a ticket here in Ann Arbor through ticketmaster before he left, but he was out of luck when he got there. They told him that individual outlets might still have tix left, but he wasn't desperate enough to drive all over San Diego to find them. He went to the theater anyway, in case someone had an extra ticket, and I guess they had a line for people w/o tickets so if any ticketholders didn't show up, they could get in (I'm not clear on this part). My friend was about 15th in line. As the show was about to start, all the people ahead of him got in. But then the DJ guy who was giving out the tix let some of his friends cut in line and they got the last ones! So my friend missed out again. There is a happy ending to this story though (at least for me). To get in to the area where they were selling t-shirts you apparently didn't need a ticket, so my friend picked one up for me (wahoo!). I asked him to get me the cowgirl one, since a few people had mentioned it on the list. I was kinda surprised when I saw it though - it's a somewhat racy drawing of a well-endowed cowgirl with the word Jewel below, maroon on a brown background. Is there a story to this, like did she draw it, or does she have any songs about cowgirls, or is my friend maybe pulling a joke on me with a fake t-shirt??? On Wed, 20 Mar 1996 UrbanField@aol.com wrote: > mention something about tape trees. > Can anybody tell me what these are. Let's say there is a recording of a Jewel show. Let's say it's digitally recorded from a nice position in the audience, and Jewel plays some kick-ass songs no one has heard in a long time. Lots of people would want this tape. Now, let's say you are in posession of this tape--you recorded it. I'm sure you're a great guy and all, but you probably don't want to answer hundreds of requests, and schlep responses to the mailbox. So here's what you do. The tape you have, the master tape, is the "seed" of a tape tree. You get in touch with some Jewel fans. You find those that have the best tape recording equipment, the coolest tape deck, whatever. Those people become the branches. Generally, you would have one branch for a given geographical area. All the Jewel fans in southern california except for the branch would be "leaves". These "leaves" get in touch with their "branch" and request a tape (or trade or whatever) The branch complies. This way, you only have to make a few copies of the tape--then each of the branches make a few. In really big tape trees (like some of those run by Grateful Dead fans) you can have branches and sub-branches and so on. The reason you'd want good tape decks for the branches is so that the sound quality of the tapes they distribute is as close to the orignal as possible. Got it? Someome might want to put this in the FAQ... - -- J.j. I just finished watching Jewel on Crossroads. She was awesome they interviewed her between videos and finished up with a sneak of her singing WWSYS from Vail. She was awesome. Sadly however, I work the graveyard shift at a gas station on Saturday and Sunday so I won't be able to see the performance from Vail in its entirety. Boo, hoo. They better replay it later when I can see it.
