It is a funny, charming song and if possible I would like a copy. If anybody can help me out please let me know. By the way, the performance was excellent, and because it was sponsered by a radio station it was free and broadcasted. I was shocked at how many people showed up. There were people still waiting to get inside when the show ended. Untill that Saturday I thought I was the only Jewel fan in the city. I only wish that I could have taped the show also. ------------------------------ From: "David Chamberlain (ENG)" Date: Tue, 19 Mar 1996 09:55:02 -0500 (EST) Subject: Re: Foolish Games "LULL" a song written by David Brian Chamberlain.@1996 I sink into, shame Not the one, not the one to, blame That's not right, and you know that Just because I'm A little bit messed up Just because I'm A little bit insane Erased everything, You're to blame Just want to be... I was planning on seeing Jewel at UVM on April 17, but I called Ticketmaster and they had no info on it. So I checked out the UVM web site, and looked at their events calander, but that too was bare of any Jewel listings. Are these dates for real? Hey Jewel-list, One of the things that smacked me over the head when I first heard the album was the number of different mediums of artistic expression within the songs. In high school, Jewel was an art major, and "Painters" beautifully captures alot of knowledge of visual arts. The academy also had programs in creative writing, classical music, theatre, and dance. Our senior year, the orchestra went on tour to Lincoln Center to play in the "Mozart 200" celebration, and the little reference to baroque music and loving Mozart reminds me of those days. On weekends, young creative writing students had a chance to try out their wares at "Red Wheelbarrow" readings, and the poetry inside the album jacket is full of some of the same qualities of personal I don't really know why I'm sharing all of these silly thoughts- I guess people have been talking about their favorite songs or relating orgasmic concert experiences. I guess for me, the album is almost like a scrapbook of memories, revisiting old hopes and dreams. I also don't mean to be sending out propoganda promoting the high school I went to. It's a nice place, but I think Jewel is more responsible for her wonderfulness than that place could ever be. After graduating, I bought alot of Janis Joplin albums, remembering that Jewel had done a little cover of "Try" in a coffeehouse band, and trying to relate Janis' bluesy voice with Jewel's. Anyway, what I'm trying to say is that Jewel's yodeling is phenominal and all, but there's so much more to her voice and her songwriting than jumping vocal registers. So much for my blurb for today, Brian Bartel ------------------------------ From: j.mullins1@genie.com Date: Wed, 20 Mar 96 00:33:00 UTC 0000 Subject: My leaves on Innerchange tree Pardon the confusion, BUT: My tape deck broke this week, and I JUST got a new one tonight. I have been in Toronto for a few days to see Melissa Etheridge in concert. On the way home in the car tonight the radio announcer said that Jewel was going to be the opening act for Bob Dylan (ick!!) in New haven, Ct April 14. Bob Dylan??? Say it aint so! Did he ever know how to sing? Or did he always like to mumble and drool? I want to see Jewel, but I don't know if I can take Bob. May the force be with you, Lauren ps- I have this list in the digest fromat and yessum, I'm losing the first line of some posts. ------------------------------ From: nebulous@panix.com (friendly neighborhood psychopath) Date: Tue, 19 Mar 1996 23:07:48 -0500 (EST) Subject: bob dylan sucking? while i know this isn't exactly relevant, i just read lauren's (LAURATOR@aol.com) comment on bob dylan and feel almost compelled to respond.. while it's certainly everyones right to not like a musician, and i don't particularly love bob dylan, but think twice before completely negating his existence. bob dylan holds a firm and well-deserved place in music history, and believe it or not, jewel is almost inescapably influenced by dylan, even if that influence is once or twice removed. ben *-----------------------------------------------------------------------* | ben sterling 'if you don't live it, | | new york, ny it won't come out of your horn' | | nebulous@panix.com charlie parker | *-----------------------------------------------------------------------* ------------------------------ From: diciccda@saber.udayton.edu Date: Tue, 19 Mar 1996 22:48:34 -0500 Subject: Re: Opening Act Bob Dylan IS a GENIUS> The man actually does know how to sing!!! Give a listen to "Lay Lady Lay" Bob sings wonderfully on that tune. The most important thing about Bob Dylan is his lyrics. The man can turn a phrase. Only a few others can write such good lyrics as Zimmy. Joni Mitchell is perhaps Bob's equal when it comes to turning a phrase. And after all, Sean Penn is quite fond of calling Jewel "THE NEXT BOB DYLAN" I last saw Bob Dylan on 6/15/95 opening for the Dead up in Highgate, Vermont and Dylan gave the performance of his life. Over the last year or so, Dylan has actually started enunciating again. So you may actually enjoy his performance!!! :) Don't write off Bob. He deserves to be heard. If anyone has questions about Zimmy, feel free to contact me, or flame me or whatever... :) Thanks for listenin' Dave DiCicco diciccda@saber.udayton.edu ------------------------------ From: toaster@canada.com Date: Tue, 19 Mar 1996 23:16:34 -0500 Subject: Bob Dylan musings - - - - - - Usually, I chose to simply lurk around this list. But I decided that it's time to add my two cents. I just read a post which said something about Bob Dylan slobbering and drooling, and that it would be hard to sit through his set if Jewel is indeed opening. Now, I realize that Dylan may not have the angelic voice of Jewel, and I am BY NO MEANS flaming the person who wrote that particular post. I just hope that anyone on this list who appreciates Jewel's music would give Dylan a chance. He is a brilliant songwriter and truly one of the top 5 most influential musicians in the last 50 years. I suggest you listen to "Masters of War" from his Freewheelin' album, if you want to hear a truly moving and beautiful piece. - - This also brings to mind some earlier posts which I recall where I got the impression that some were embarrassed or against Jewel being called "Folk" music. I also find this sad. I really cannot understand the disdain which people feel for folk. I don't know why it has this stigma attached to it. I consider myself a fan of folk and am very proud of that. Such artists as Bob Wiseman, the Jayhawks, Sarah McLachlin and yes, even the much-beloved Jewel can be considered folk right along with the old "folkies" like Dylan, Vic Chesnutt and Johnny Cash. This isn't an insult to them.....but rather one of the greatest compliments we can give them. - - Sorry 'bout the long post eh.....if anyone feels the urge to flame me because of this.......feel free....just my two cents.... - - see ya....
