I was just leafing through Detroit entertainment street paper, "Orbit", which reviews a number of new CDs this month, including one called RADIO ODYSSEY - WRAS 88.5FM PRESENTS, released on the ICHABAN label. This CD, put out by the radio station of Georgia University, is a compilation of live-to-air Atlantan tapings of various artists, and is said to include Jewel. The reviewer doesn't say which song(s), or offer much insight except to say that the bigger bands that you might buy the CD for actually offer the weakest cuts on the album, but if you like those artists you won't be disappointed. She includes Jewel in that category, along with Throwing Muses, Lisa Germano and The Toadies. The reviewer, who may just have odd taste, had high praise for the lesser known bands on the CD; Miranda Sex Garden, Vic Chestnutt, Low Pop Suicide, G. Love, Morphine and especially Soul Coughing. Seeing that this is written up in Detroit, it sounds like the CD is available nationally. I'll check my resources tomorrow, but in the meantime, has anyone else seen or heard it? [snip] Some confusion here -- the album includes the *song* "Jewel" (a beautiful acoustic rendition) performed by the *band* Cranes. No Jewel Kilcher to be had here. For all that, i dug the disc better than half the time, and found a few tracks that i will *always* skip over. Here are the artists: g. love; toadies; morphine; throwing muses; chrome cranks; soul coughing; weapon of choice; lisa germano; jack logan; wedding present; freedy johnston; miranda sex garden; spearhead; vic chestnutt; cranes; low pop suicide; mary karlzen; april's motel room; drepung loseling monks. most of the artists i follow perform versions of tracks they have already recorded, not brand new songs. i wonder who is meant to buy records like this. the selection is so diverse that it is hard for me to imagine someone who likes *all* of these artists, and it also doesn't make for a very, um, coherent listening experience from start to finish. but i digress... doug m-w ------------------------------ From: "Ken Winchenbach" Date: Wed, 28 Feb 1996 11:57:56 +0000 Subject: ATT: Those with tapes I know I'm going to be sorry for posting this, so let me try to stem the flood right now. If you are looking desperately for tapes, please do not respond to this post! Wait until things get underway. Anyway, to all of you on the list who have some concert tapes of Jewel, I think you've probably noticed the million posts lately from newbies looking for tapes. I would suggest that we solve this problem now and in the future with an adopt a newbie program. In other words, someone with tapes would adopt-a-newbie, and provide them with two to four Jewel tapes, for blanks and postage. That way, that person can get their Jewel fix, and also have a chance of bettering their collection through trading. If you have some tapes and would be willing to be part of this program, let me know. If we get enough people we can do it. Someone was mentioning a welcome committee, I think this is one way we can help people into the community, along with the Rare Angels and Innerchange Days tapes. If you don't have tapes, please don't respond. I know you'll think it's a great idea, and be in support of it. Just wait to see if anyone else is interested. P.S. Is there something in the FAQ about the Rare Angels dubbing site? I know I'm always sending the address to people. I think there should be a prominent spot in the FAQ telling people where to get the tape. And I would like to be added as an Innerchange Days site (once the tree is done), although that might need to be expanded if I get enough responses. ---------K e n---------- <> walden@bluefin.net http://www.bluefin.net/~wink "You must live as you think, or sooner or later you will think as you live." ------------------------------ From: "damon schmidt" Date: Wed, 28 Feb 96 11:00:19 -0600 Subject: Re: Tower Records promo CD The lady on hte other end > checked her computers, and said that there was "no CD called Save the > Linoleum by Jewel." I just got mine (thank you, John T, thank you) and love it! Now a personal seque which I hope isnt too inappropriate for this list. I just cant seem to stop playing "Sometimes It Be That Way," for the simple reason that Jewel has hit it dead on with this song in terms of a recent relationship I had. Dead on! Even down to the "I'm sorry" structure of the song, it is dead on. I had actually said to this woman around Thanksgiving, "I'm sorry the Pilgrims landed and ruined your week." (Trust me, when I said that, it made perfect sense; and I had never heard the song at that time!) It is scary in some ways (can it be that in addition to her other remarkable gifts Jewel is also psychic?) but it is also very therapeutic, providing a greater sense of closure than I previously had. What could be simpler than saying: "I was bound to find out you didnt care/Sometimes it be that way" to sum it all up. Thank you, Jewel. I know we all can equate songs to our own experiences (I can do it with many more) and that's I think the essence of our Jewel fan-dom. It's one thing to love a singer's voice, guitar playing, stage presence, humor, what have you, but when she can reach a depth with her songs that taps a core in you, that transcends all other things, and there is really nothing else to do but love her. And all from a 21-year-old woman! Actually at the concert last night, Jewel told a funny story about how she played this concert at a junior high school up in Detroit. All the kids were expecting Jewell (the rapper) to be there, so they were waving their hands back and forth, chanting 'Jew-ell, Jew-ell.' Of course when a blond-haired Jewel came out, they went quiet. She continued the story by saying that when she was singing the song 'Pieces of You,' the teachers starting filing the kids out row by row. That has been the steady state of this list since Jewel started showing up on talk shows and videos. There has been a constant clamor for tapes, and not a lot of response to requests. When the list grew slowly, people were willing to address that. But once it took off, any offer to make tapes would be met with at least 60 requests for them. The Rare Angels and Innerchange Days were supposed to help address that. And if the tree works well, perhaps additional concert tapes could be treed also? (Not that I think the adopt a newbie idea is bad.... I feel like I adopted about 20 newbies before I got worn out.) How is the tree working, anyway? > P.S. Is there something in the FAQ about the Rare Angels dubbing > site? I know I'm always sending the address to people. I know we wrote that into the original FAQ. I'm not sure if it got updated after Neile asked to stop being the contact and ?? took over. Was that done Jeff? I think most of the people asking just didn't read it carefully. We could address that by making it more prominant. I was thinking it would be a good idea to include info on the Innerchange Days tape too. I don't know if this tree structure lends itself to continued existance after all the current tapes have been made. Maybe we could have a contact for that tape too (Ken?), and they could collect names and put together a node once 5 more people have joined. Or something along those lines. I probably shouldn't pose so many questions right now, since I'm going to be traveling for 3 weeks starging tomorrow, and will probably unsubscribe during that time. Well, I'm sure someone can give me a summary when I get back. First off, here's the setlist (in order; stuff in quotes I'm guessing at the titles): Pieces of You Little Sister The Cold Song (Catch a Cold With Me) Morning Song Race Car Driver (yes!) You Were Meant For Me "I Hate Valentine's Day" Sometimes It Be That Way Flower (double yes!) "I've-Got-the-Blues-More-Than-You-Do Blues" Near You Always Tiny Little Spaces Daddy Angel Standing By "Nothing Without Love" or "Deep Water" "Fragile Heart" Who Will Save Your Soul Chime Bells I'm Sensitive My Own Private God's Gift To Women a Swedish lullaby? This was by far the best Jewel performance I've been to if only because it was the *longest* performance of hers I've ever been to. (Of course, she was still seen checking her watch several times during the set. I can only hope that one day she does a tour where she's it and doesn't have to worry about another act coming out on time.) Before the show, some guy was handing out free Jewel stuff from his car. I managed to snag a Pieces of You album promo card as well as the album cover in a bigger poster size. Of the three shirts, two were kind of disappointing, but the cowgirl one, of which I'm now a proud owner, was defintely cool. I would have picked a few extras for listies, but they weren't taking credit cards and I was low on cash. No problems last night with Jewel having to quiet any talky fans. Everyone in the front floor area was there for her. People at the bar were talking during the songs, but it was far enough away from the stage that it didn't interfere with the show. She asked for requests several times and did a good job, I think, of accomodating them (especially those from the people right in front of her). The only one she outright turned down was "Adrian," as she claimed not to know that one anymore. I've also reworded it, so its a little more prominent, though I'm curious. For those people who recently subscribed--did you read the FAQ you're sent? Did you then delete it? That's what I imagine happens. People read it, they're not ready to really go through the process of requesting tapes, but when they realize they want them, they've already deleted the FAQ. What we need is someone (preferably one designated person) to respond to requests for tapes by telling them what's available (currently Rare Angels and the Innerchange Days tapes). She was very beautiful (in music and appearance) and humorous. Seems that many people were there just for Jewel, as everyone who was standing in rapture during her performance sat down for Edwin's. To the latter bands credit, people did get up after a while and start dancing, as their music was quite catchy (granted I was studying for my 8AM lab). => Yes, I did manage to give her white roses. (It's a habit, I figure she could use a bit of beauty on the road, and it's giving back the beauty I derive from her.) She signed my shirt, drawing an angel, as well! She was absolutely swamped with fans, and seemed to be handling them well... though I wonder if she'll stop coming out to mingle as she gets more popular. It looked really wearying. I would like to praise Tom Proven, a listmember. He was so very nice, and gave me a copy of Rare Angels, which I hadn't even had time to mail off for (even though I've known of it for half a year). I never mentioned this on the list, so I guess a lot of people just thought the requests were going without any reponse. I can assure you this is not the case - in fact, I don't know how Neile can possibly keep up with the dubs much longer.
