It was incredible! I used to live in Toronto and heard WWSYS a lot on the radio, but that's the only song I knew. I had the best time! I got a wicked spot in the crowd too - right in front of her for the entire show, front row! Even better, my friend lent me his tape recorder, so i got the whole show on tape. It's pretty good quality too. The crowd wasn't too bad, but she did tell some people to shut up a couple of times. The only bad part of the evening was that I didn't get a chance to meet her. I stuck around for the Ed McCain show, even though i think they suck, hoping that she would come back after to sign autographs. She didn't show up, so I went outside and waited by the tour bus for 45 minutes. Finally Edwin came out, and I pretended to be a big fan of his, hoping he might be able get me Jewel's autograph in the bus. Unfortunately, he told me that she doesn't travel with them, and that she had left right after her set. Arghhhhhh! Does anyone know if Jewel even likes Ed and the boys? It seemed strange to me that she never mentioned them at all during her set, not even at the end before they came on. Just curious. ------------------------------ From: Dan Stark Date: Tue, 27 Feb 1996 02:58:53 -0500 (EST) Subject: Re: Jewel in Vancouver Isn't it cool to see new people jumping in here after "discovering" her at one of her shows? She was in good form in spite of hectic travel in addition to her touring, and I think she won the hearts of all who attended. Many left after her show, as they were not interested in hearing Edwin McCain. I met Jewel before the show and I assume she met fans after the show as well (I had to leave immediately after her show). For those interested in T-shirts... they are available again... I like the 'cowgirl' shirt best. Did anyone catch Jewel on KTVU-TV (San Fran's Fox affiliate) this morning about 8:35? She was on for about 5 minutes, had a brief interview and performed one song from her CD. It was an excellent close-up of her perfoming style, including her unusual open-tuning left-hand technique. Unfortunately, I did NOT have a blank tape in the VCR, and I was aware of her appearance only because I heard her beautiful voice coming from the next room. By the time I reached the TV and managed to unwrap and insert a blank cassette, her appearance was over (ARGHHH!) If anyone managed to tape this appearance I would be like to arrange for a copy... I can offer lots of taped music in trade (including the DUETS performance), or we can arrange something else to your liking... maybe it can be added to Ken Winchenbach's video tree which he is working on. I will be at SLIM's tonight to see her again... I believe she is the second of two opening acts (though the ticket only lists Jewel as opener), so if you arrive late you may still be able to see her. Got the Mike and Maty appearance, and I tink dat's it. Ooooh...bomb threat. That's some scary stuff. I wonder if the threat was against Jewel or if it was just some random thing. Still, Oooooohhhh. I think I posted this fact some time ago, but I'll do it again since a couple people are interested in Ani DiFranco. She manages her unique guitar sound by attaching press on nails to all of her digits on her strumming hand and reinforcing them with tape (black electrical I believe). For those who have not seen Ani, she is awesome on stage and her serious and angry songs do not reveal her funny and goofy side. I was looking through my Sandman comics and trade paperbacks last night (I'm entering them in a book collecting contest) and noticed that in "A Game of You" (I think that's the story arc) several pictures of Rose Walker look kinda like Jewel. Of course there is almost definitely no connection. just something I saw. Oh...something else I noticed. I am starting to see more of a similarity between Jewel and Tori in singing style. Jewel does something similar to that very audible breath-thing that Tori is oh so infamous for. I could her it especially on "Don't." (lally, lally...no put down those aerosol spray cans and lighters! Stop, you're crisping me!) I guess no one liked the poem, 'cause no one wrote back. 'Sokay, I'll live with rejection, but honest-to-god I liked it especially 'cause I didn't write it. And I still think Jewel would have found it peachy-keen. Let me start from the beginning... Santa Cruz is 1 1/2 hour drive (in my truck) from my house. So I got on the road and took Highway 1 down the coast, watching the sun set over the clouds rolling in and the ebbing tide, listening to Chris Issak (Forever Blue). I'd love to hear them do a duet; I think it would be great with that ocean influence you hear in both of them. So, I arrived in Santa Cruz very early for the show. Thanks to joule for the excellent directions, even though I took a different way, they got me home without a hitch. Unable to eat, I wandered around town..saw the local record shops (all out of Jewel)...saw the local street people...gave change to on nice kid, who didn't really ask for it. I parked my truck in the back behind the venue, where McCain's bus (and I assume Jewel's vehicle) were parked. Went into the venue, with tape recorder (more later) and stuff to be signed. The place was huge and nearly empty... I went into the bar had a Red Hook, to kill the time, and read my book a little. Met Joule (newton-meter) and her friends from UCSC. It was good to see that she had been able to convert her dormmates over to Jewel. Hung out at the tables for a while, when who comes walking through but the woman of the hour/day/year, Jewel. Not wanting to bother her too much, we shook and debated how to approach her. We eventually followed her into the atrium where she was very nice, especially having been presented with white roses by Joule. She talked with us for about 20-30 minutes (it may have been less, but it seemed like a really long time). She signed autographs, took a picture (i'll bring my camera tonight), and chatted. She mentioned her new guitar when I asked her about it...should I tell evryone what she said?...she said she didn't surf in Santa Cruz cause the water was way too cold. I called her 'spoiled' for getting the guitar and not surfing in the cold water here. I hope she didn't take it negatively, cause I didn't mean it that way. She smiled, so I think not. (She also seemed to be nursing a cold, probably from her extended touring and hotel living) Eventually we left her alone, and went back to wait for the show. She was so absolutely radiant! Her charisma and comfort in dealing with fans was truly amazing. She came back through the slowly growing audience and went back stage to prepare for her show. (i'll continue this with set list in another post.) As for what she was wearing, for those who care...silver top(same one as on Week-in rock interview, I think?), black faux-leather boot/pants (they looked like one piece, but it's hard to say without staring oppressively) She had on her suede(?) beige jacket which she took off during her set. She had this cool beltbuckle that I didn't get too good a look at, since it's behind the guitar most of the time..looked like a sun with the american flag but I really couldn't be too sure. The colors are about right though. I get to see her again tonight...hopefully she'll be as friendly. I also finally got to hear her on the radio..I requested her on KFOG(who is on tongiht's show) THe DJ asked me about her show and I said it was brilliant. She, in the next three songs (amazing response time for a request), plugged the show saying that a FOG-head called and said the show at the Catalyst was "spectacular" and that she performed "over the Rainbow" (which she didn't...I thought she was trying to identify Jewel when she asked me about that), and that everyone should see her tonight. Then she played WWSYS. Unbelievably this was only the second time I'd heard JK on the radio. The first was a year ago (april 12) on Stanford's station at 3 am (GGTW, I was immediatelly hooked and bought PoY the next day) Twice in one year..wow..what support (Sarcasm) I'll tell more about the show after I listen to it again, but she played my request (Louisa) and everyone else's, too. WOW!! Sorry for the long post, but there's still more to come. I'll even talk about tonight's show..where I meet more angels. Cool shirts..I'll try to get Kam a cowgirl shirt tonight. Love me, hate me, Tom provent@pls.lib.ca.us For my leaves, I sent the tapes to Ken for my copy so I'll send out my address for copies later this week...with Jewel in town, I have no other focus. MacDonald" Date: Tue, 27 Feb 1996 19:05:55 -0500 Subject: Jewel at Fox Theater - Boulder, CO Hello, Well, I didn't actually attend the show, as I live in Boston, but I bought tickets for my sister who lives in Boulder so her and her boyfriend could attend. I had been telling her about Jewel for the last 9 months or so (Actually, my sister had seen her before I did....I think she played at the Telluride Arts festival last summer...not sure, but she had been really impressed) and was telling her about the show at the Fox on Feb 17th. Anyhow, she said she would attend, but I could tell she wouldn't becasue she's a boob like that. So, wonderful younger brother that I am, I bought the tickets through ticketmaster, only to be told they couldn't do it because the card holder had to be the one to pick up the tickets. But after the ticket person heard my pitiful story and how much I wanted to send my sister to the show they relented and had tickets for her at the door. About the show.....my first question to Laura was "How loud were the Edwin fans?" and she replied, "What Edwin fans?". I said, "You know, the Edwin McCain fans. They're really loud and obnoxious most of the time, and hang near the bar." :) She nonchalantly replied, "Oh, there didn't seem to be many Edwin fans there, everyone came for Jewel." I was elated. She told me the crowd was quiet through the whole set (1 1/2 hours), and that Jewel was psyched she had so many fans there who knew her music. I hear she was pretty amazed, as the Fox is fairly large and was filled. (Again, this is hearsay and my mom was a drama teacher, hence, I can be a drama queen..ah, you get the drift........ just kidding :) She did some encores and came outside after the show and was swamped by starry eyed men. One was shaking so bad she had to calm him down. Anyhow, over half the crowd left after Jewel finished. Isn't that great? :) Finally, my sister, who is a pretty tough music critic (with great taste btw), was floored by Jewel. In fact, some song about a "Fat boy" made her cry. This of course amazed her, as Nanci Griffith is the only musician to ever make her cry. High praise indeed! I first heard Jewel about 9 months ago on Crossroads when WWSYS video first came out and that's what got me hooked. When YWMFM came out, WWSYS (Don't you love all these annoying acronyms) seemed to drop off the scene for awhile but it's reversed again. Sorta odd. Crossroads plays her a ton though. I'd estimate 4 out of 5 shows feature her. Neil *-------------------------------------------------------------------* | | | Neil S.
