The show was great; it started 5 minutes after 7:30 with Jewel coming out and exclaiming that it ws "fuckin' freezing" (which it was). She started with Pieces of You, telling a few stories along the way, doing The Cranberries impression. She asked for requests after POY, and I yelled out "Adrian!" as loud as I could, but she never played it. She told lots of stories; the drug bust story, the gay bar..and she sang most of the album, and a lot of songs that are going around the tapes here; Nikkos, God's Gift To Women (with the story), Nicotine Love. Before she came out, she was standing in a doorway to the right of the stage ..I recognized her and was staring, and I swear that she looked straight at me (although I can't be too sure, she was in shadows). Oh, hehe, she asked for a guitar pick (preferably medium)..jokingly told us how "professional" she was. I'll never ever ever ever forget this..even though I missed her after the show because I had to leave about half-way through Edwin's set (which wasn't too bad, I might add, from what I saw). Jewel closed her set with Chime Bells Ring (amazing!), and came back and sang two encores (last one was Nikkos). I can't way to get my Innerchange Tapes and I'm going to send out a tape to get Rare Angels. I'm very very very very happy about tonight; yesterday I saw Phantom of the Opera at the Paramount Theatre (which is a more worthy venue for Jewel). The only regret I have is that I didn't stick around to meet her and get her autograph; I wanted to ask her if she ever actually got my email that I wrote long ago. Cheers, Phong - -- Hello. Phong was right--it was a wonderful show last night, but the theatre was FREEZING! Jewel wore her coat throughout the show. She was in fine voice, but whenever her playing or voice were quiet the sound system cut out entirely. I'm also wondering if she's a little tired of touring. She seemed to be enjoying herself, but weary. The crowd was really responsive to her, though, and certainly it was quiet while she was playing--the theatre setting worked well for that--and lots of appreciative applause. Whenever I hear her live I'm amazed at the power and purity of her voice--and how she can belt it out when she wants to. Phong says: > Jewel). The only regret I have is that I didn't stick around to meet her > and get her autograph; I wanted to ask her if she ever actually got my > email that I wrote long ago. Actually, Jewel left shortly after her show and before Edwin McCain came on. I was hanging around trying to get to say hi and give her a book. I eventually asked someone to take it backstage for me, and he said he would (I have this feeling it was someone from Edwin McCain's band, as he thanked me for coming--and I was about to leave before they went on. I wonder if he will manage to get it to her?). Anyway, when we went outside to head to the car, there was Jewel heading to her van. We talked as we walked (they were parked right in front of us). She said she'd thought of me while playing "Nicotine Love" and I said, "Yeah, I know, I could tell." Which seems weird, but she was looking at me a lot, and I'm pretty sure she heard me call for it when she asked for requests. She did say right after she'd played it that she always worries about the people who request that one. Heh. Anyway, it was good to say hi to her, and funny because I'd given up the idea of being able to talk to her. She says she's still planning on going into the studio next month. She sure is magnificent live. - --Neile neile@u.washington.edu ------------------------------ From: Aaron Andrew Cooke Date: Fri, 23 Feb 1996 13:35:41 -0500 Subject: Jewel Tapes Hi there. They are quite a good band, it seems like they love having fun and it sure comes across on stage. They played a club here in Tempe and will also play there next thursday. But I am writing this because they played a song that he announced he cowrote with Jewel. I think it was called, ugh.. i can't think of it, i think it had something to do with father or goddess or both.. I'm sorry!! But the highlight was when he said he wrote it "with a gal named Jewel" there was scattered applause, including me! And he said, "oh cool, some of you have heard of her, she is the kindest, caring girl you will ever meet." It was pretty neat the way he was talkign about her. Anyway, if any of u are in arizona and want to see the rugburns next thursday let me know. Anyone out there going?? > Take care! > Candra Hi I too have been a lurker for quite a while and thought I might as well say hi and say that I am going to be at the concert as well. I was wondering if anyone knows if there are going to be any T-shirts on sale at the show or if they have been available at the last few. I know that they have been basically hit and miss, but I really want one. Also as Mark said it does say Jewel in small letters on the tickets. Anyway, I guess that is about all. Oh yeah I will be coming from Berkeley and so if any one person needs a ride I can probably squeeze you in (just email me directly). Also if anyone wants to meet up at the show I am about 6'1", have small gold rimmed glasses, black, kind of long hair and will probably be wearing a dark T-shirt (depends on what is clean), also I think I will be with two women with brown hair down to the middle of the backs who are both about 5'6", anyway so now that everyone out there knows, come say Hi, I promise not to bite and might even let you in front of me since I can normally see over most people.
