I went to one of Jewel's shows about 2 weeks ago and she said the same things after her imitation of Delores O'Riordan....about her having a daydream she was playing at her wedding, and Keanu Reeves being there with a date to prove he's not gay, and even the part about her wearing a bare midriff wedding dress with no naval piercing because she was "too cool for that"....although she did add that instead of D having her naval pierced, she had a purple marshmallow (I think she said the horseshoe) from Lucky Charms in her naval? I've just acquired a bunch of Jewel promotional CDs. Along with the well-known: "Save The Linoleum" [PRCD 5999-2] "Who Will Save Your Soul" [PRCD 6496] "You Were Meant For Me" (aka "Phyllis Barnabee...") [PRCD 6412-2] I also got two other interesting ones: "Who Will Save Your Soul" [PRCD 6585] (album version) ---> this was rereleased to radio stations with the cover sticker: As Seen On: "The Conan O'Brien Show" & "CBS This Morning" Other TV Appearances Include: TNT's "The Wizard Of Oz" & VH-1's "Duets With Melissa Etheridge" "You Were Meant For Me" [PRCD 6605] Track listing: 1. Remix - 3:13 (Juan Patino version) 2. Album Version - 4:13 3. Acoustic Version - 3:38 #3 is apparently from a radio show (which one I don't know) -- It's a duet with Steve Poltz (of the Rugburns) -- this is a great version! ---> this was released with a cover sticker: See Jewel on TV!! 11/22 on TNT as Dorothy in "The Wizard of Oz" 11/22 with Melissa Etheridge on VH-1's "Duets" show 11/28 performing "You Were Meant For Me" on NBC's "Late Show with Conan O'Brien" T.B.S. "Entertainment Tonight" I don't know if the acoustic version of "You Were Meant For Me" is going to be on the next "Rare Angels", but I'd be glad to *donate* this song to that tape. Those involved in that project can e-mail me privately on that (so not to clutter this list). Hope this helps. - -Ken kenmlee@ix.netcom.com ------------------------------ From: Dan Stark Date: Thu, 8 Feb 1996 03:22:51 -0500 (EST) Subject: Ann Arbor Review Hi Everyone, I just got back from The Blind Pig in Ann Arbor, where Jewel played on the Edwin McCain tour tonight in their "Detroit" stop.I thought I'd post the setlist and a brief review for whoever is interested. This is the first time I've seen Jewel in a few months, and I thought she looked a bit different since I last saw her. In fact, she looks like she's really taking good care of herself - I noticed a darker, dirty blonde hair color, and she wore a very striking, low-cut black top tonight. She played for about an hour and twenty minutes, and tended to play one song straight into the next more than I've seen before, and kept the between-song stories fairly brief. I expect that's because she had limited time onstage before Edwin McCain's set, and wanted to get as much in as possible. It wasn't the quietest crowd I've been in, but they weren't too bad compared to the Innocence Mission show I saw there last month...plus I was camped out 3 feet in front of the monitor tower so the noise wasn't too distracting. The Blind Pig is a fairly small bar room, and the show was sold out for some time, so it was jammed. Jewel was in good voice, missed a few notes here and there on the guitar, but it was a decent bar room performance. She played 3 songs that were new to me, and 2 others that I'd never seen her do live, so I walked away happy. The highlight for me tonight was her performance of Tiny Love Spaces, a song that had never come across on tape for me like it did live tonight. She also pulled off a wonderfully long vocal sustain during Who Will Save Your Soooooouuuuuuuuuul, which drew a great response from the crowd. She played Painters at someone's request, something she doesn't usually do in the bars. And she played Foolish Games, which I think is new to her live repertoire. In the past she's always claimed that she's "forgotten" how to play it when people called for it, which I think was a cover-up for the fact that she never played it on guitar to begin with. She did tonight though, but with the disclaimer that "It doesn't translate well to guitar"...I thought it sounded just fine. Notable in its absence was You Were Meant For Me, the current single! Despite that song getting some decent airplay here, she got far more requests for I'm Sensitive. Here's the setlist from tonight. (I'm guessing at the titles of the new songs): Pieces Of You Little Sister Sometimes It Be That Way No Love Song Left In Me (new to me) The Cold Song Morning Song Race Car Driver Kiss Your Ass (new to me, co-written with Steve Poltz) Foolish Games You're So Small (new to me) Daddy Angel Standing By Tiny Love Spaces God's Gift To Women Deep Water Who Will Save Your Soul Chime Bells Are Ringing --- ENCORE --- I'm Sensitive Painters Near You Always I stayed for about half an hour of Edwin McCain's set, but while I like some of his songs, I found his performance pretty flat following Jewel's. Bye for now... Dan PS- I met someone at the show who wanted to join this list, but I've been on here so long I can't remember how to subscribe. Can someone please repost the details? I was quite surprised (and pleased) to hear the album version the first time. A copy of the guitar version from one of the Innerchange shows in on the Innerchange tapes currently being treed--the song also features a verse that didn't make it onto the album version. Remix - 3:13 (Juan Patino version) Wow, this is exciting. I didn't know Juan Patino ever worked with Jewel. He co-produced Lisa Loeb's awesome debut "Tails", and made it (IMO) the best cd of last year. Now he's working with Jewel? That's neat. He's also Lisa Loeb's boyfriend. Also, regarding the Jewel piece in Entertainment Weekly: It's my favorite magazine, but the little blurb about her (the first time I've seen the magazine mention her) just made me mad. It called Sean Penn her boyfriend, which I think has been established only as a rumor, and had a rather derogatory comment about the song. It was a review of the video for YWMFM, and it said something to the effect that Penn focused so much on Jewel in the video that you didn't even notice the song "wasn't much". The video got a B, but the song was criticized. - -- Mark Miazga Michigan State University miazgama@pilot.msu.edu East Lansing, MI USA ------------------------------ From: PAUL KYUSAM KIM Date: Thu, 08 Feb 1996 14:15:00 -0500 (EST) Subject: Re: Jewel Promos/ Jewel in "EW" On Thu, 8 Feb 1996, Mark Anthony Miazga wrote: > > > > "You Were Meant For Me" [PRCD 6605] > > Track listing: > > 1. A fiend of mine who lives across the hall in my dorm is the niece of Juan Patino. She got a signed version of Lisa Loeb's cd before it came out last fall. I just asked her about the remix and she said that he did do it and that he is working on Jewel's latest album (producing? I forget already what she said. I was so happy I danced and hit my head on the door) She said that they've already recorded it but that they have to do all that post-recording stuff. Which I'm a bit skeptical about since someone (Hiryana?) said that she was going to record stuff after her current tour ends in March. But still. WOW! > Also, regarding the Jewel piece in Entertainment Weekly: It's my favorite > magazine, but the little blurb about her (the first time I've seen the > magazine mention her) just made me mad. The video got a B, but the song was > criticized. I read the review too. I picked up the mag Tuesday because of the Gillian Anderson cover, like the person who first wrote about this I forget the name, and was surprised by the Jewel blurb. They said it was a "revealing study of director/boyfriend Sean Penn's particular obsession with the artist" namely Jewel. ARGH! stop the rumors dammit. They did write a nice bit describing (I just got stuck on that word and thought "is that like un-scribing something" you know how words do that. they just don't seem right, even though they are. Especially when you're in a weird mood and the letters just don't seem to spell anything with meaning) "Jewel's singular combination of innocent beauty and pulp sexuality" I agree with that description of Jewel. But they finish the bit with "And since the song isn't much, it's best to focus on the star." stupid stupid rat creatures. gonna make them squeal like a pig. The accompanying pic from the video (a little larger than a one dollar stamp) is nice, but it doesn't really look like Jewel. The Gillian Anderson story seemed unnecessary and gratuitous, but it was nice and had nice photos. The accompanying bit on the co-stars was cool. > Mark Miazga Michigan State University > miazgama@pilot.msu.edu East Lansing, MI USA > Lansing Michigan. I read that and I think of the Capitals of the United States song from the Animaniacs. Anybody have a listing of magazine appearances by Jewel? There's a small list on one of the web pages, but I haven't seen a comprehensive one. Oh and to tie the threads of appearances and tv together, anyone know if jewel's music has been used on tv shows. I think many of her songs could be used effectively on tv, as Homicide: Life on the Streets, Due South, Party of Five, and X-Files have shown with other non-soundtrack music such as Sarah McLachlan, Tori Amos, Morphine, Lisa Germano, blahblahblah. That's it for now. First I kept calling Shank Hall {WI} to make sure they had tickets and the girl said yes so yesterday I went downtown and back in Bumper to bumper traffic and when I got there the box office wasnt open so I waited and waited so finally I left and that made me late to pick up my 10 year old sister at dance class so she was out side freezing in the Wisconsin cold in tights and a To-To. Then I got home and called up the box-office to yell and the jerk made some lame excuse for not being there so I was about to hang-up and he mentioned it was a 21 and over show and I am not 21 so that really bummed me out. So then my brother then got pissed off at me for not double checking and he was then bumbed because he likes Edwin. So today I thought I was semi-over it so I turn on the radio to sooth my bad mood and I hear a acoustic Jewel so i turn it up and and it ended out to be that Jewel was at my local radio station New Rock 102.1 doing a interview and a personal concert so that made my mood worse and to top it off I forgot to tape the show.
