But it was a big money saver for me... being a young Well, you're asking in the right place! Having been a contributor of live songs to both projects (probably the only contributor to both) I can say that Rare Angels was put together far better than Under the Covers was, so a BIG tip of the hat to Neile and our anonymous compiler. Despite the fact that I had contributed 3 songs to the Under the Covers project, I never did get a copy of one of the tapes from the trunk, as I was supposed to. (Nor did I ever get my contribution tapes back). I ended up having to get a copy from Greg Burrell, like everyone else. (Mind you, Greg, being a longtime friend, sent me a copy for free). I'm glad Greg took over distribution, or nobody would ever have gotten their tapes. In contrast, I sent my *master* tapes to the compiler of the Rare Angels project. I got my tapes back, *plus* the finished product, personally delivered, about a week or two after I sent them! And the quality of the tape is infinitely better than the UtC tapes. That said, the Rare Angels project was a less ambitious one than Under the Covers. The intent of Under the Covers was to have a comprehensive collection of recordings of every cover song Tori performed (and later this was expanded to include rarely-performed Tori-penned b-sides). And RDT, even then was gigantic compared to the Jewel list (especially at the time Rare Angels was put together). Rare Angels was never meant to be comprehensive. In fact I will venture to say that it is impossible for any Jewel tape project to be comprehensive! Luckily though, a really good, and quite extensive, collection of Jewel songs taped in her Innerchange days already existed at that point. That collection comes to us courtesy of two of our own, whom you should all be able to guess by now. Rare Angels is sort of a continuation of that collection. It had two main goals: One was to share the songs from the _Save the Linoleum_ and the "official bootleg" tape, (which we thought was long sold out at that time) with members of the list who didn't have access to these items. The other was to fill in the gaps of the original Innerchange collection with an old song that the original taper could never get Jewel to perform (hence, "Nicotine Love") and songs written after the Innerchange days that a lot of the oldtimers never got to hear. So now a lot of you should be burning with curiosity about these Innerchange tapes! Basically, they are a collection of Jewel songs from many many Innerchange shows that Neal and Jeff H. put together. I assume they are the ones that Jeff is going to make available to the list via tape tree. Am I right, Jeff? Because "Rare Angels" was meant to fill in the gaps of the Innerchange tapes, you will find they complement each other quite nicely, with very little overlap (except for the live tracks "Shiva" and StL, of course). So when these tapes become available, snap them up! They're really quite excellent. With Rare Angels already available, Radio Angels and the Innerchange tapes coming soon, the Jewel list will have a series of tapes available to its members that are the envy of Jewel fans everywhere. I've seen many posts lately about people meeting Jewel at concerts on the recent co-tour with Edwyn... I've only seen Jewel once, at the Edge, in Palo Alto (N. California), and had some questions about how people were meeting her.... 1. I understand it is a co-billing concert, but Jewel plays first...and that's really all I'm interested in... When I saw her open for Belly at the Edge, she got 20 minutes, and I couldn't go outside the club to meet her because there were no re-admits...If you left, you couldn't come back. As great as Jewel was, I had traveled 2 hours to see her and Belly and couldn't just go outside on a chance 20 minutes into the evening... 2. Have you been meeting her after her set (i.e. during Edwyn)? If so, have you just left the club, and looked out back? 3. Or have you met her after the whole thing, after Edwyn? 4. Have you met her out back, or inside? I'm curious because I would only be going to the show for her, so would hate to listen to the whole Edwyn set and then find out later on this list that while that was going on, Jewel was out back chatting with people and feeling their noses.... I'm going to hopefully go to both the Feb 26 and Feb 27 shows in Sacramento and San Francisco, respectively, if college and work permit. I'd love to meet any "Everyday Angels", and so let me know if there are some of you going as it gets closer. I ask these questions because I'd love to say hello to her and was thinking of making her a teapot or some other art work to give to her...I don't want to miss the opportunity to give it to her, and would rather do this in person, than trying to get it on stage during her set. Thanks everyone...I love this list...and the recently posted letter from Jewel... We will also need a couple more tape dubbing site volunteers since the list has grown so much. Anyway, requests for the Rare Angels tape should now be sent to colins@cs.mun.ca, who will assign you a dubbing site. Dubbing volunteers for Radio Angels should contact me at neile@u.washington.edu Also, looking ahead a little, we will sometime want to start collecting songs for the next compilation. In this case we will be looking for anything that's not on _Pieces of You_, the two Innerchange tapes (the listings for those should be available shortly as that tape tree goes into action), or _Rare Angels_, and we'll need everyone who has been taping Jewel's shows to help us put that together. I think we'll probably wait until the end of this current tour for that--round about when Jewel goes back into the studio this spring and we start going crazy for new songs while she's not touring and we're waiting for the new album. ;) FYI, _Phyllis Barnabee Finally Gets a Bra_ (the "You Were Meant For Me" promo single) will be available on the upcoming Radio Angels tape. - --Neile neile@u.washington.edu ------------------------------ From: Autumn Marie Deatherage Date: Thu, 1 Feb 1996 14:28:14 -0500 (EST) Subject: Re: I'm psyched! I just wa nted to write and say that Jewel was incredible last Tuesday at Tuxedo Junction in Danbury. There was nothing but the stage between me and Jewel and the enti re show I just stared at her. She really is beautiful, isn't she? Although I know her inspiration to people go way beyond her looks. Her music is incredibl e, everything about her is incredible...but you guys already know that. :) She spoke to me twice during the show...when she asked if there were any requests, I asked for "Dance Between Two Women" and she said, "How do you know that song ? Did I go to highschool with you or something?" or something like that. :) h ehehe...She tuned her guitar and asked me again how I knew the song. I was spe echless and finally she said..."You've heard of it somewhere?" I nodded. Afte r the show, a bunch of people camped outside her tour bus. She came out like w e knew she would and spent quite a bit of time with us, signing autographs and just talking with people in the cold. She signed my poster and my tennis ball keychain and asked what song it was that I wanted to hear again....SHE REMEMBER ED!!! I can't believe that! I told her I drove for forever to get to the show and she thanked me and hugged me. I got hugged by my idol!!! They cut off the intro-hosting with Jewel to start the new Tori video (I thought the video was cool, but why did they have to cut Jewel talking?) and the beginning of Foolish Games was cut off, too. Nothing truly enlightening was asked of Jewel. And they only broadcast one of the three songs that she recorded for them! They did do that little song-credit-title thingy that they do for all videos when they showed Foolish Games, so I hope they play all three songs as vidoes soon. The piano trio that played with her was ok, but the piano was a bit annoying in the rushing of tempos that classical artists are prone to do. During the whole performance, I kept thinking "that could be me, my brother, and my sister instead of those dinks playing those instruments." My sister (21.5 yrs) plays the piano; my brother (20.3) plays the violin, and I (18.3) play the cello.
