But (not to bring up a for some reason sore topic) I do have some rare tori stuff. The people on rdt compiled a tape, actually two called Unnder the covers. It's and under the pink reference. I sure someone else has already responded to this plea, so let me open up what I have to offer to the whole list. I'd be interested in dubbing some of the television appearances that I have for trade with other list members. I work at my campus tv station and have access to some decent editing equipment. VHS transfer is relatively poor to begin with, but I think doing it on a couple prosumer SVHS decks provides a little better quality that two cheap VCRs hooked up together. However, two caveats: One. Truth be told, I'm not really interested in trading for other tv appearances. I'm more envious of the people in San Diego who have those 91X calendars free for the taking in their local Subway shop or the people who've been able to buy the tape bootlegs for something like five bucks. So, basically, if you've got something like those calendars or some other Jewel-related "trinket" to offer, let's talk. If what you're offering is worth more than what I'm offering, then I'm perfectly willing to make up the difference (monetarily, if necessary), but that's where I'd rather start. Two. I know I kinda started the video tree thread a few months ago, and nothing really came of it. But I'm *not* willing to take on anything of that scope right now. For now, let's just go with the Mike & Maty appearance (a dreadful interview, if you ask me. And I'm talking about the hosts, not Jewel) and maybe the CBS This Morning segment...if I can find it. I've got them on SP VHS and I'm offering the same, one generation removed, with commercials removed, clean editing cuts, a few seconds of added black screen before the first fade-in and after the last fade-out, etc. Summary: I'm offering the Mike & Maty and maybe the CBS This Morning television appearances. If you've come upon some inexpensive Jewel- related item because of where you happen to live (lucky dogs! :)), and you're willing to deal, I'm in a trading mood. Exceptions: Hiranya, Jewel, her mom, and Neile (who I'm about to send a Rare Angels request package) get any tv appearances I have for free on principle. All they have to do is ask. We've already seen that Jewel works great with a band on Pieces Of You, and on some of her television appearances also. But she tours alone (question: has she ever toured with a band?). She has talked about working with the Counting Crows, and Rugburns in the future, which would imply that she will be playing or writing with bands in the future. I think it would be great if Jewel developed this way. I also love her solo acoustic stuff, and nothing says that they have to be exclusive. (e-mail neile@u.washington.edu for info on getting it, at least for now.) It is only available to members of the list. Radio Angels is probably a reference to a future tape, not yet completed. What do you think the music would be like? This is very close to the question I sent to Hiranya for Jewel to answer. Personally I would love to see her branch out. She would be wasting her talent, in a sense, by being labeled purely as a "folk" musician, because of its limited popularity. The problem, though, is I don't think any of us want her to sell out, in the name of selling records, by being too mainstream. In other words there is something of a compromise between being mainstream and really popular, or being true to yourself and being less popular (with people really missing out). You can look back at bands like Genesis, for example. They've become more mainstream, which has made them really BIG, but most prog fans really feel that Genesis has lost its soul in doing so, and that they have really lost something in that Genesis isn't interested in writing the same kind of music that their oldest fans still love. Back to Jewel, the main thing I think is missing from POY is a full, rich musical background to the lyrics in the foreground. I tend to like music with a lot going on instrumentally. But that's purely a personal preference. ------------------------------ From: "jeffrey hanson" Date: Wed, 31 Jan 96 15:33:46 cdt Subject: Re[2]: JEWEL: The future of Jewel Personally I'd like to see Jewel do a Big Band album, with a real live Big Band, ala Glenn Miller. Maybe not for her next album, but sometime in the future. But then I'd also like to see her do a blues album, a punk album, etc. Having seen her perform live with the Rugburns backing her up, the girl can really rock when performing with a band. Also, as much as I like her guitar playing, when she's not playing herself she can open up her voice and really sing (not that she doesn't sing well while she's playing, but her voice is even more spectacular when she's not). Plus she can dance and/or stomp around more. I'd also like to see her release some of the poetry songs she used to perform back in the early days. She had a couple of incredible spoken word pieces that would then flow into an incredible song. I've included them in the Inner Change tapes that will soon be made available to the list via tape tree. It's happened after the three times I saw Sarah McLachlan, after I saw Ani DiFranco, after Susan Werner, after Velocity Girl, but usually I feel the effects right after the concert and into the next day where all I do is listen to the artist's music. It usually dissipates after a while. This is weird, though. I saw Jewel on Monday. I experienced a bit of restless longing for more right after the concert, but I was concentrating more on finding a ride back to my dorm so the feelings weren't that strong. Tuesday the feeling was stronger and I listened to her music most of the day and even spent three hours listening to PoY and StL with the Karaoke feature on on my sound system, figuring out the chord progressions, the tunings and the fingerings of the songs on a guitar (not my guitar, my friend's. I'm not a guitarist. I can play a handful of chords. It was a long trip (almost seven hours through Connecticut's Gauntlet of Construction) from Wilmington, DE, but well worth it. It was my unreasonable thing to do this month, as Jewel canceled her June 20th show in Philly and I had this interview I had to do with her. It's late, and I'm babbling, but suffice to say I spent a long time doing the interview, watching the show, taking digital pictures (which I'll send to the unofficial Jewel WWW page) and hanging out with Jewel. She has a lot of things she wanted me to pass on to us on the mailing list, and I'll type them all in as she wrote them. Jewel Kilcher to the "Jewel" mailing-list My fellow music lovers- I can't begin to portray to you the feeling of a dream coming true- I know it sounds corny, but it's so true. And useful. I was just a girl who was tired of waitressing and people believed in me and fed me by coming to my shows. Without my friends in San Diego, and now this incredible new group of people across the country I would still be hungry in my van. Now I'm just hungry in a rent-a-car in 48 states in 40 days- but my heart loves it! 24 hours of this a day is better than three hours of waitressing. Sometimes record labels think they sell albums- but they don't- they help, but it's you guys who help me. So often our dreams become our hobbies and it deadens our passions. I love my life and want to thank you al. I know our lives are separate and that none of you have to care about my happiness, but that you do things like taking the time to call radio stations means a lot to me. I hope I can give back as much as I'm given. I wrote a song I'd like to dedicate to you all. It's called "Deep Water." I hope you can all hear it one day. Jewel Kilcher Then she scribbled out a copy of a poem from her journal. It's amazing- the thing is stuffed full of poetry and it's like only the last two months worth! She said she has many many journals of poetry. Also, she never titles her poems- so..... "poem written at the airport cafeteria 6/12/95 after reading a bad press review" I think of the scrutiny and shrink beneath its million eyes has she gained weight? does blue become her? is she losing her light? Never "My I believe her intent is growing, if not her skill" Never noticing deaths Misfigured face in perfection or beauty in the awkward struggle of a new direction We've become fascinated With the fixed We possess all the curiosity of a cul-de-sac as though the honor lied in the mastering of the menial It can not be the end for which we live That is death, But for the struggle that keeps us young Daring to make mistakes Knowing there are none. I'd like to babble on about the show, setlist, etc., but I'm falling asleep. Suffice to say it was amazing, she played about 90 minutes and then was forced to play another 45 of encores. There were around 100 people. She played one amazing song about her helf-brother called "Nikos"- more personal than her normal material. She also broke into a hilarious impression of Dolores O'Riordin (Cranberries) in the middle of "My Own Private God's Gift to Women." She just seems to be getting better and better. All for now. BTW, Jewel said she thinks the list should be called "Everyday Angels". I have complete summer tour info that is a bit different from that at the Unofficial WWW page, and I'll post it when I get back.
