Jewel is a wonderful person and tremendous performer and songwriter. I hope her fan base keeps growing as she provides wonderful music and songs and they should be shared. If you missed it, you didn't miss much. They flubbed the audio just when they started talking about her, and thus only had sound for a few seconds of the video clip (which was "Who WIll Save Your Soul?"). They also did her a bit of injustice by labeling her a folk singer and comparing her to other folk singers -- this is unfair because lots of people (like me) who don't listen to folk music in general might love Jewel's music. But he was nothing but gushing over her and hopefully still generated some interest. ------------------------------ From: Hiranya@aol.com Date: Mon, 29 Jan 1996 10:15:31 -0500 Subject: Re: Q: Jewel's brothers... Jewel has two brothers. Shane is the oldest. He is 24 and has three little babies (so Jewel is an Auntie!), married, lives in Alaska. He's a very talented artist and poet, a quiet easy going guy who works with developmentally challenged adults. Shane has an excellent singing voice and writes songs sometimes. Shane is snowed in up in Anchorage Alaska where he is planning a series of art works when the ground thaws. He'll expose the roots of trees, weave a basket with the live roots put some cool items in the basket and then cover it all up again. He sounds like a pretty esoteric guy! Her younger brother is Atz (rhyms with lots). He's 19. Really good looking. Just got back from roaming around Europe for three months. Works at a ski resort. Likes to snowboard. He's really neat. And Lenedra says he writes and sings as well as Jewel (very different style) but hasnt decided if he has any interest in doing the sort of thing shes doing. He wants to take a bit more time deciding whats next. He plays a mean harp. (harmonica). May be on her next CD. But he commercial fishes during the summers and he may be out on a boat during the recording. Of course you are familiar with Nikkos from the song. Hes Jewels half brother and im getting more info on him. They showed a bit of her video, introduced her and she came out wearing her light colored suede arizona jacket (I forget what they're called). They interviewed her and she told about her upbringing and had some funny things to say. The audience loved her. She said she has a nose fetish. When Mike told the audience Jewel can do something only 5% of all people can do, she(Jewel) said "Cook?" It was hillarious. She did a bit of yodelling. First time I heard her yodel. She was great(fast too). She sang YWMFM and ended the show with WWSYS. Does anyone know why she doesn't sing the line "I know you love me and soon you will see" anymore? Well it was good to see her actually talk and joke with the audience and stuff(first time for me). I find you often have to sit through a lot of crap in between the good stuff. (BTW, at the risk of annoying some, Tori Amos is appearing in the studio today at 3:30... my VCR is set and ready!) Jewel showed up in the studio the day of her third C'est What show in Toronto back in March, and played a really good version of "You Were Meant for Me." I taped it, but to my everlasting chagrin, I accidentally taped over it, something I didn't realize happened until I went to show the video to Dan S. How embarrassing! Anyway, they also played her video for WWSYS, and have been playing it ever since. She's also appeared in a segment on a show called "The New Music." The US branch has also featured her in a show called "Break This." I'm sorry, I don't know if these will be aired again. Hiranya kindly informed us: >I think the Oz stuff might be available now cuz Lenedra just >got a CD. Its the whole show on the CD. The sound of the Interestingly enough, when I first heard the CD version of this song, I thought it had a definite Liz Phair feel to it (not that Liz is indie anymore). I must qualify this by saying I'm only familiar with Liz's stuff from "Exile in Guyville." I don't think I ever mentioned that on this list, and somehow, I'd totally forgotten about it until just now. BTW, I do like Liz quite a bit, although it took me a while to warm up to her. Strangely though I *didn't* get this feeling *before* I heard the StL version. Live, I didn't get a "Liz Phair" impression at all from GGtW. >One of the features that impresses me the most about Jewel is her ability >to use different vocal styles. The diversity is amazing and, I think (in >my limited experience and scope of listening), >quite rare among the world of recording artists. I still can't get over I agree. I think what blew me away most was when she did "A Very Big Girl" in Toronto... you folks with Rare Angels know what I mean. Anyway, this is a really exciting time to be a fan of Jewel, because she is still experimenting with different styles, which is partly why she uses so many right now. You don't get much of a sense of that versatility in PoY, but her live performances really showcase this multifaceted nature of Jewel's talents. I think that as time goes on and Jewel matures in her songwriting, she will develop a more cohesive and unmistakable style of her own. Hopefully she won't restrict her repertoire, though!
