It was quite a surprise. This was the song, plus Chime Bells, that totally bowled me over the first time I saw Jewel. (Oddly enough, she was opening for Iris Dement in San Diego, who I tried and tried to like, but eventually had to walk out on.) Jewel, on the other hand, was amazing. She's basically been playing a very similar concert a phenomenal number of times a month, for about a year now. Granted, all shows have their little twists, but not more than a few songs change from show to show, and the versions peformed are pretty similar. Still, they seem invariably better than on the album to me. I'd be curious how many shows she did in 1995. She toured non-stop. > 4) I met an Atlantic rep there named Josh, and gave him > info about how to join this list, so he'll be here in a > few days. Oh boy... I'm really impressed with the stylization of it. The use of color (the yellows, blues, and reds) is what I find really interesting. Jewel looks so wee with the little blue spotlight on her face in the beginning. :) I also like the angles (sp?--it's too early) used. Neat-o, I say. It was also amusing when I thought to myself, "wow, I met this woman...she touched my nose...this is so neat!" She is such a nice person. I hope that you all will be able to meet her one day (if you haven't already, and I'm sure that you will). She is very laid back and tres cool--from what I gathered in that 5 minute experience. She also kept returning to the spot where I was (at Trax in Charlottesville, VA) to continue her conversation with this one guy. He looked pretty happy. Ok, I'm rambling. Anyway, I was wondering, is the version of this song available anywhere. I'm sure that you folks have talked about it before, but I was just wondering. She's just adorable. A really sweet person, at least on stage. I don't know her personally so I can't say. But her voice is something, she really has something on Joan Osborne. There were a lot of people there just to see her, and they left before EMB's set. There were still plenty of people left though. - ------------- who are these people who leave after Jewel's set? As if being there to see Edwin McCain would be some sort of bane to their musical existence? Too cool for AWARE bands? I can't figure it out... Oh, I don't know if this has ever been brought up on this mailing list (i've only been here a couple of weeks), but anyone who is looking for some great home-grown music should pick up any of the three AWARE compilation CDs. AWARE II has a pair of songs by Edwin McCain on it, and it features another amazing female singer/songwriter with a stellar voice...her name is Shannon Worrell and she's from Charlottesville, VA, (the next Seattle, right...don't believe the hype) and I think anybody who enjoys Jewel (such as anyone who would be reading this right now) would probably find her interesting as well...she's formed a group called Monsoon and it will have a CD out this spring, but she has an independently released CD that came out in '94 that I highly recommend. If anyone has a chance to listen to AWARE II or Shannon's CD "Three Wishes", don't pass it up...if you are interested in Shannon Worrell, email me and I'll drop some info on how to pick it up. I've got short audio clips online on the web page which technically could (in theory) get me into trouble. I use a university account since I am a student, and the web page is located on their machines - any sign of trouble and I'll be forced to remove it. Not to fear however, I do have other sites that I could move the page to if it ever can down to it. In any event, I wouldn't be surprised if some current memeber was connected to Atlantic. I've received email before from a nice fellow at Atlantic who was kind enough to send me some Jewel material for the web page - whether or not he joined the mailing list I don't know, but the possibility has been there since day 1. Hey! Woah! I like Tori too, that wasnt at all an angry thing I put on there about Jewel writing the song in the style of Tori. Its not a Tori rip-off. It was about an experience Jewel had, but she wanted to try writing a little bit in the 'style' of Tori. Artists do this sometimes. Jewel thinks Tori is an awesome song writer and singer so she was playing with some of Tori's phrasing etc. People often comment on GGtW as being a little like Tori Amos. My source was Jewel's mom. I just thought people would be interested in a little more info on what was behind the song. Its still diffinetely recognizably a Jewel song! Once in a while if someone is really desparate for info I reply but mostly I dont cuz I just dont want to become a Jewel expert or famous for knowing Jewel. I do this as part of my volunteering for Jewel's mom, Lenedra, cuz she and Jewel wanted to make a contribution to the list without being overbearing presences. Tone of opinion makes all the diff doesnt it? When something is stuffed down someones throat (through judgment, or holler- ing or name calling and stuff) the gag reflex usually takes over. It would be great to have guidlines for this list specifically. Sort of a statement of being dedicated to developing a sense of community and support while enjoying the great diversity of human thought. Maybe it already exists for the list. Great discussion about a hard topic. Lenedra, (Js mom) said that she thinks that it is one of our most urgent evolutionary questions: Can humankind evolve to resovle and allow differences with tolerence, compassion, appreciation, even enjoyment, or will be stay with the old acusitive ways and flame ourselves right off the face of the planet? She puts her money on the creative ability of the human to change for the better. Me to, and I think this discussion is an example of the process.
