I don't have any phone numbers, but you can get tickets through PROTIX. Also, I think the Audionet Jukebox sound quality depends more on the type of computer you have than on the type of connection. My roommate has two computers, both with ethernet, one is a 486/33 and the other is a P5. But I'm using a Pentium 90Mhz with ethernet and a T1 connection, which gives me a data rate of up to 100KBps from a fast server. I think it would be hard to get a much faster connection unless you were sitting in the RealAudio office! Anyway, you can turn on "Show Statistics" from the RA player, and it will show you if your connection is keeping up perfectly with the data stream. Mine is - and I think the sound quality is too poor to listen to music. Don't get me wrong, I think RealAudio is great - I love using it to listen to NPR shows that I missed. I just don't think it is yet a viable way to deliver music over the net. I must say, though, that recently I have also been tempted to leave. It's not the volume of messages that bothers me, but the lack of content in those messages. Especially recently, there have been fewer messages with any content and many with no content at all. I would ask list members before they push whatever keys send their messages to quickly think whether the message might better be sent to an individual, whether they may have quoted too much of a previous message, and whether they are actually adding anything to a discussion. This is especially important as many list members have to pay for access & for the time they use on their service. I think Jewel is one of the most interesting new female artists I've come across in years and I would love to keeping hearing from other people who think so and hear why they think so, but I have a low chatter and banter tolerance. I feel a loyalty to the list since I was one of the first members and gratitude to Jeff Wasilko for creating the list and special thanks to Hiranya, who makes such an effort to keep the list informed about Jewel, so I am staying for now, but if the signal-to-noise ratio stays at what it has been recently, I'll forgo the information and unsubscribe. Please send flames to my email address and don't trouble the list with them. - --Neile neile@u.washington.edu ------------------------------ From: Patrick Brown Date: Fri, 19 Jan 1996 17:08:49 -0500 (EST) Subject: Re: Jewel in D.C. Initial enthusiasm (people introduce themselves, and gush alot about how wonderful it is to find kindred souls). 2. Evangelism (people moan about how few folks are posting to the list, and brainstorm recruitment strategies). 3. Growth (more and more people join, more and more lengthy threads develop, occasional off-topic threads pop up). 4. Community (lots of threads, some more relevant than others; lots of information and advice is exchanged; experts help other experts as well as less experienced colleagues; friendships develop; people tease each other; newcomers are welcomed with generosity and patience; everyone---newbie and expert alike--- feels comfortable asking questions, suggesting answers, and sharing opinions). 5. Discomfort with diversity (the number of messages increases dramatically; not every thread is fascinating to every reader; people start complaining about the signal-to-noise ratio; person 1 threatens to quit if *other* people don't limit discussion to person 1's pet topic; person 2 agrees with person 1; person 3 tells 1 & 2 to lighten up; more bandwidth is wasted complaining about off-topic threads than is used for the threads themselves; everyone gets annoyed). 6a. Smug complacency and stagnation (the purists flame everyone who asks an 'old' question or responds with humor to a serious post; newbies are rebuffed; traffic drops to a doze-producing level of a few minor issues; all interesting discussions happen by private e-mail and are limited to a few participants; the purists spend lots of time self-righteously congratulating each other on keeping off-topic threads off the list). OR 6b. Maturity (a few people quit in a huff; the rest of the participants stay near stage 4, with stage 5 popping up briefly every few weeks; many people wear out their second or third 'delete' key, but the list lives contentedly ever after). --- end forwarded text - ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- There's more to life than Mentos If you really cared about me, you would check out my web page http://www.ece.utexas.edu/~jyu/ ------------------------------ From: stone Date: Fri, 19 Jan 1996 18:16:02 -0600 Subject: Re: Jewel in D.C. & RealAudio quality what you need to get is the RealAudio player version 2.0 has improved sound quality and all the CD's we have on AudioNet are recorded for the new player and only can be heard with the 2.0player and at least a 28.8 connection... .........................................stone >Hmmm....
