Does anyone know the name of the other two artists who also played that night? The one girl with the "Angeltown" record and the guy who supported her musically and had the cool song about throwing up on the ferris wheel. 2. How come there are not more songs on POY? It seems to me that since Jewel is a proficient songwriter (about 75% of the songs Thur. were new) they could but many more songs on a CD than the industry standard of 12-14. 3. Did anyone hear Howard Stern talking about Jewel? Some girl at the show told Jewel this after the show, but I could not hear what the girl said. Jewel seemed somewhat excited/shocked/confused that HS was talking about her though. 4. Did ANYODY record the show? Audio or video? I saw one person with a video camera and one with a audio, but could not get to them after the show. If you are on this list, please e-mail me privately and maybe we could get something arranged. I wont release you address to the mailing list so you dont get flooded with requests, but I WILL make a copy myself that could be available to the list, if that is OK with you. About the show: It was really nice to see her for only my second time live. She played for about 2 hours worth of music. And she even played my request which was "The Cold Song". Some of the new songs which she played were: Excuse (a song about ahting B-day's, Easter, and Chain Letters) , Fragile Heart, Fading (a song about her experience in a Mass. kmart bathroom), and..... shoot.... I'm forgetting the others already. Oh well if anybody else would like to report on Java Joe's go ahead. - -Christian p.s. for those who care, RACE CAR DRIVER is capoed on the third fret. ------------------------------ From: Patrick Brown Date: Sun, 14 Jan 1996 14:25:39 -0500 (EST) Subject: Re: Jewel@javajoes.coffee.house Christian Sinclair was only joking when they said... # # 2. She has a cd called Angel Town that is really quite good. She is on Bizarre Planet label. John Katchur, another friend of Jewel's and an excellent singer/songwriter and one of Jewel's absolutely most favorite guitarists. He was the person who really "discovered" Jewel in California and took her to java joes' (which was then in Poway--a little northeast of San Diego) and got her up with him on one of his sets. He was incredibly supportive and encouraging of her. He has a tape aavailable which he sells at his local performances. He's a Java Joe's and other venues in SD quite frequently. It was so > intimate and personal then. I guess those days are at an end! This is always a danger when our favorite local artists gain national attention. So it was nice to see Jewel playing at a local coffeehouse last Thursday here in San Diego. It was the night before she left for her tour. She announced "Tomorrow I'm leaving for a six-week tour, so I'm boycotting my album tonight" and she proceeded to play for at least two hours, with only one song from the album. I didn't know she had written so many songs (though now I do because I read the FAQ). It was nice to see her in an intimate setting again after fearing that I would be forever doomed to hear her play football stadiums. ------------------------------ From: bpugh@accesscom.net Date: Sun, 14 Jan 1996 14:56:06 -0800 Subject: Jewel in New Orleans? And POY is one of the >longest albums I've ever heard (When I first heard it all the way through it >sounded like it would go on forever -- and I certainly wished it would >have). You *really* need to get out more. _Pieces of You_ is on the longish side of average length for a mid-90's album, weighing in, as I recall, at approximately 55 minutes. Compare, for instance, to Tracy Chapman's first album, which was a mere 35 minutes, back in '87. The idea that it couldn't have been longer because "they couldn't fit any more" is absurd. Likewise absurd is the idea that the album *should* have contained more songs simply because it (a) wasn't full and (b) didn't contain all of Jewel's tunes is equally absurd. I'm *really* glad, for instance that not all of Tori Amos' b-sides make it on to her albums -- not necessarily because they're not fine songs, but because I like the albums as they are. Why should my greed for more material infringe on an artist's vision? (note: the Tori Amos example is completely spurious. She and Jewel have virtually NOTHING in common, and those who insist on comparing the two really ought to broaden their horizons) Jeff ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V1 #14 **************************
