If you ever want to remove yourself from this mailing list, you can send mail to "Majordomo@oasis.novia.net" with the following command in the body of your email message: unsubscribe rdt name@address Here's the general information for the list you've subscribed to, in case you don't already have it: ************************************************************************** Really Deep Thoughts Mailing List Information ************************************************************************** Hello and welcome to Really-Deep-Thoughts --- the Tori Amos mailing list! Please read at least the first two sections of this message before using the list. Also Please check section 4 (Frequently Asked Questions) before posting any questions to the list. 1. THE LIST: The purpose of this mailing list is to discuss and disseminate information about Tori Amos and her music, or anything else you might happen to consider relevant or of interest to other Tori fans. The list is not moderated so it's up to you to decide whether something is appropriate to post. The owner reserves the right to refuse service to anyone for any reason. The list is distributed as a 24-hour digest. This means that every 24 hours a single message is sent out which is a concatenation of the day's messages. Note that this means you may have to wait up to 24 hours before getting replies to you your mail. 2. THE ADDRESSES: The address for posting things to the list is: rdt@novia.net Requests to subscribe to the list or transfer to the digest version of the list should be sent to: rdt-request@novia.net Please DON'T SEND UNSUBSRIBE MESSAGES TO THE LIST since I can't stop them before they get forwarded to everyone on the list, and they're annoying for other subscribers. Thanks. Other messages concerning the list can be sent to cmeyers@novia.net 3. ARCHIVES AND DISCOGRAPHY: Archives and a discography are available via anonymous ftp. To get at them ftp to ftp.uwp.edu and use the "anonymous: as a login. Then change to the directory /pub/music/lists/rdt. Since there may be a delay in moving files from the incoming directory to this directory, it's also worth looking in /pub/incoming/lists/rdt for recent archives or the latest copy of the discography. Also there are a number of interesting interviews stored separately in the same directorys, for easier access. Archives automatically compressed and saved at the beginning of each month. Each month's archive is saved under the file name rdt.arc.mm.yy.Z, where mm and yy are the month and year respectively. The discography is saved under the file name "discography" (surprise!) and is updated whenever I get something to add to it. If you have or know of anything which isn't included in the discography please let me know. 4. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS: Q: Where is Tori Amos from? A: North Carolina, though she now lives in London, England. Q: When was Tori born? A: 22 August, 1963 Q: Is Tori going to be playing at such-and-such any time soon? A: The recent tour, to support Under The Pink, has finished, and it's unlikely that there will be any more concerts before Tori produces a new album. Any new tour info should be posted on rdt as soon as it becomes available, and you can get a copy of the most recently posted tour schedule by sending me email at rdt-owner@gradient.cis.upenn.edu. Please don't post requests for tour dates to the list. Q: Where can I find a discography? A: There's one stored at together with the archives (see section 3). If you can't get it via ftp then ask me and I'll mail it to you. Q: What is Y Kant Tori Read? A: Before making Little Earthquakes, Tori was in an LA-based rock band called Y Kant Tori Read. They produced a self-titled album in 1988 which was a critical and commercial failure. Opinions on this album are divided: some of people consider it to be just a mediocre radio-orientated rock album, while others think that there is still some very good music there, though it is partly obscured by the heavy rock production. Tori herself dislikes this album, partly because it holds bad memories for her, and has described it as like "Madonna and Kate Bush in a head-on collision after eating bad mushrooms". Q: How can I get Y Kant Tori Read? A: Interest in this album has been revitalized since Little Earthquakes. Since it's been deleted for some time now, and very unlikely to be re-released, it is now very difficult to come by. Jason Bilsky (fuzzbox@world.std.com) has been making tapes of it for rdt subscribers for a while now, and has recently found it necessary to start charging $5 per tape to cover wear and tear on his equipment ($10 without a tape and SASE). You can send him a C60 tape, with a postage paid return envelope, to: Jason Bilsky 349 Crescent Street Apartment 1 Waltham, MA 02154 U.S.A. Also send him your email address so he can send you confirmation and let you know of any delays. Also Steve Cohn (Steven.Cohn@ICD-PO.SMHEARST.LANGATE.sprint.com has offered to make tapes of YKTR for rdt subscribers. His address is: Steve Cohn 35 Apache Drive Manalapan, NJ 07726 Q: Who's Neil? A: Neil, as in "Neil says Hi by the way" and "where's Neil when you need him?", is Neil Gaiman, most notable as author of the Sandman series of comics from DC/Vertigo. He's also written a number of other things including the novel Good Omens (together with Terry Prachet), and a collection of short stories and miscellanea called Angels and Visitations published by Dreamhaven Press (which I'd recommend very highly). Neil is mentioned in two of Tori's songs, and wrote the introduction from the tour brochure for her current tour. Tori in turn wrote the introduction for book version of Neil Gaiman's Death: The High Cost Of Living and her lyrics appeared in an episode of the Sandman: Brief Lives series. The Sandman character Delirium was first created before Neil met Tori, but the development of the character seems to have been influenced in part by Tori, so that resemblance is probably not coincidental. Currently Tori is working on the music for a BBC radio adaption of Neil's Sandman: Worlds End series. Q: Where else can I get info on Tori? A: There are currently three different fanzines about Tori being produced. There is fanzine, also called Really Deep Thoughts, being produced by Melissa and Richard Caldwell. Though they share our name, the fanzine is independent of this list, and it has the support of Tori and her management. Subscriptions are $15 per annum ($20 overseas). For details write to: Really Deep Thoughts, P.O.Box 328606, Columbus, OH 43232 USA or send email to info@bsbbs.columbus.oh.us for more information. There is also a Tori Amos Fan Club, run by Tom Richards, which has it's own fanzine called Upside Down. Membership of the fan club is $15 for the USA, $18 Mexico/Canada, and $25 for the rest of the world. To join write to Tori Amos Fan Club PO Box 8456 Clearwater, Florida 34618. FAX: 813 461 2922 or you can contact the Fan Club electronically at ToriFans@aol.com. Finally there is a British fanzine, called Take To The Sky, which is run by Steve Jenkins. Contact Steve Jenkins, 25 Rydall Drive, Bexleyheath, Kent DA7 3EF. England. Also, if you have access to world-wide-web, check out the Tori home-page at http://www.mit.edu:8001/people/nocturne/tori.html Q: How can I write to Tori? A: Tori has said that she gets huge amounts of mail and just doesn't have time to answer it all, though she does read everything she gets. So if you write to her, don't be dissapointed if you don't get a reply. You can write to her, care of her management Spivak Entertainment. The address is: Tori Amos c/o Spivak Entertainment, 11845 West Olympic Blvd. Suite 1125, Los Angeles, CA 90064. Q: What is Tori's natural hair color? A: um, I don't know if I should reveal this one??? If you want to find out more background on Tori and her music, I'd recommend starting with the interviews which are available by anonymous ftp, or by www. Post soon and enjoy the list! Well, I must admit that being both a Tori fan and a Jewel fan, I could never really understand comparisons between the two artists either, although at times in the CD version of WWSYS there are hints of Tori in her voice. However, having seen Jewel live before her CD was released in Canada, I will always think of her in terms of her live shows rather than her CD (which BTW I don't think captures the energy and power of her live performances at all). So really I don't think Jewel is much like Tori at all. That said, it does seem as if a lot of people who like Tori also like Jewel, and vice-versa. I think you really should check Tori out, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. ...he continued... > Well... I think what I'm getting at is the Jewel CAN'T be compared >to anyone, her sound and style is completely *new*. And that's why we love >her, right?!?!? Here is where I would have to differ. No artist exists in a vaccuum, and Jewel is no exception. And while I think that her sound and style are vital and fresh, she is influenced and shaped by the music that came before her, as she herself has said. I myself compare her most often to early Joni Mitchell, who Jewel does *not* list among her influences, since she didn't even know who she was until last year! Both are wonderfully articulate, poetic, and prolific songwriters with beautiful voices adept with an acoustic guitar in a sort of folky vein. (I know Jewel hates to be labelled like that, but I think it fits). Both pulled up northern small-town roots (Homer, Alaska, and Somewhereville, Saskatchewan) to move to sunny California, where they blossomed musically (actually, I'm not sure about this with Joni, but it sure sounded good, didn't it? She did write a cool song about California though). - ---------------------------------------------------------- About the Mike and Maddy? To me, the song sounds a lot like Edie Brickell, esp. the vocal style and arrangement. One of the things I really like about the album is Jewel's vocal and songwriting breadth. Unlike a lot of musicians, the songs do NOT sound all alike, nor does her voice. Contrast the "little girl" voice in "Im Sensitive," the verse on "Save Your Soul," "Adrian" with the deep, soulful alto on "Painters" and "Foolish Games" (my personal favorite on the album.)
