Part 1 (long) Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk OK angels here it is... sorry this is so long, but I wanted to cover everything that might cause some confusion or irregularities... remember this is just part one... the final and decisive one comes December 15th, but it's just as important to participate here to push your favorite music ahead! Last year I decided to try with a slightly bigger poll than usual... and the responce was great... it totally went beyond expectations... people thought it was a great idea and votes kept coming in and the result can be seen on my totally outdated homepage: www.geocities.com/Paris/Metro/2009/edas.html but that will come in part 2... Now this year I decided to totally expand this "poll"... and turn it into the EDA Music Awards... and if this goes at least as well as last year's Best Album Of The Year I will definitely make this an Annual thing and EDA Music Awards 2000 will turn into the 1st Annual EDA Music Awards... I've present this to some of you out there and asked you for your thoughts, ideas, suggestions etc and there were no complaints so some new categories were born and the way to vote has changed for some! So here's how ALL OF YOU can participate: ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ THE RULES AND GUIDE TO PARTICIPATING IN PART 1 OF EDA MUSIC AWARDS 2000 1. Send me an e-mail with the maximum of 5 nominations for each category below. 2. Here it is not important to send the list in the order of your preference... nominations are equal and it makes no difference if you list them in the 1st or 5th slot!!! 3. And remember ONLY albums released in 1998 and 1999 and songs off those albums that were not released or any other song that was on the charts THIS YEAR are eligible for this!!! So you CAN'T nominate albums like: - Surfacing - Sarah McLachlan - Pieces Of You - Jewel - Jagged Little Pill - Alanis Morissette - The Wallflowers - Bringing Down The Horse etc... However if there are some resonable circumstances I'm willing to make exceptions, you just have to write the reason along with the vote... for example... My Own Prison by Creed was released throughout Europe in 1999 so of course it's acceptable to nominate this album. 4. You can vote for any category you wish, you don't have to give nominations for all of them... and if you wish to give only one, it's OK, just no more than 5. If you send more I will only consider first 5 and if you can't think of 5 titles you can always write what you can think of now and send me the rest later. If you can't think of the album or a song title or something don't worry just send a brief description... like: the latest album by ??? I'm not saying I know everything - but I'm pretty much into this and last year it was easy to resolve the "riddles" :)) 5. Of course you can send your nominations 'til December 15th!!! 6. --> The address to send them to is: k4fr0010@kiss.uni-lj.si ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 7. When sending me your nominations... PLEASE use the format following- these rules!!! - ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 8. There's also a question of what album or song fits in what category! Sometimes it can fit in more than one... and I'm just gonna let you decide how you feel about it. If you wanna nominate Metallica's S&M as the best Country Album Of The Year... go ahead I will accept your vote, and if other people agree hell it can even win for all I care. It reflects your (and mine) opinion and taste, if that makes us silly, stupid or whatever... well so be it! Furthermore if you want to nominate an album that doesn't fit in any of those categories... like a Funk/Jazz/Classical album... you are welcome to create your own category and send nominations, if I receive more such nominations I will do my best to find a category or more most suitable for those other albums. 9. From all the nominations, 5 with most votes will join the 4 major categories and be there for you in part 2, to directly vote for. 10. No e-mail address or voter's name will be passed along to the SPAM-O-MANIA or CHAIN-ME-HAPPY mailing lists. For the best in spam and chain letters you have to be good and work hard throughout the year and who knows I might mention your name to Santa! 11. Only residents of the "3rd rock from the sun" are eligible to enter this poll, and it must be sent from a terminal on this planet. Last year somebody voted from the satellite orbitting around Earth and I just had to accept that as well... so yeah you can vote from Earth's satellites as well, but only the artificial ones... we don't want any votes from the Moon (cause Martians have supposedly taken it over)... there's only so many nominations for Tom Jones one can handle... and 12. If you don't vote you have no right to send me hate mail!!! +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ HERE'S THE FORMAT FOR SENDING IN YOUR NOMINATIONS: (please use it, to make my life easier:) ) First write the name of the category the following nominations are for! The cathegories are: Best Folk Album Best Folk Song Best Rock/Alternative/Metal Album Best Rock/Alternative/Metal Song Best R&B/Soul Album Best R&B/Soul Song Best Rap/Hip Hop Album Best Rap/Hip Hop Song Best Pop/Dance Album Best Pop/Dance Song Best Country Album Best Country Song Best Soundtrack Best Song From A Soundtrack Then write in 1 to 5 nominations in format [#] [Song/Album Title] [Artist] Here's an example for a person who'd only want to send 3 nominations for Best Rock Album and 1 nomination for Best R&B/Soul Song: -------------------------------------------------------------------- Best Rock Album [1] [This Desert Life] [Counting Crows] [2] [The Distance To Here] [Live] [3] [Hey! Album] [Marvelous 3] Best R&B/Soul Song [1] [Bills, Bills, Bills] [Destiny's Child] -------------------------------------------------------------------- OK... again sorry this is so long... and I hope I didn't forget something!! Send your nominations now and make your music taste matter! They were originally scheduled to be released (only to PBS and Jmerch) on 11/17, but didn't come in until yesterday, 11/30. So, although there was an initial shortage of ornaments, that was never an issue because the videos weren't in yet. Now they have plenty of ornaments, and the videos have arrived, so the orders will start going out today....and everyone whose already placed an order (within the last 2 weeks) should get their's sometime next week. Whether you placed an order on 11/13, or just yesterday, won't matter. You'll still get everything next week. Hope this helps out anyone whose been wondering (like me) where these items are. Lets go sentence by sentence: Derrick writes: >I just got off the phone with the people at JMERCH and was told that *none* >of the ornaments have been shipped out yet because there was a delay in >getting the Sessions videotapes. As all the folks who already have their ornaments & Sessions videos know, MANY of these orders were shipped last week & many people already have them, so to say *none* have been shipped is mistaken. >They were originally scheduled to be released (only to PBS and Jmerch) >on 11/17, but didn't come in until yesterday, 11/30. Again, not true. The first batch of Sessions videos came in, sold out & it was the second batch of Sessions video inventory that came in yesterday. > So, although there was an initial shortage of ornaments, > that was never an issue because the videos weren't in yet Needless to say, this is wrong. It was the second batch of videos & ornament orders that were slightly delayed. These orders will go out this week. > Now they have plenty of ornaments and the videos have arrived, > so the orders will start going out today.... This too is wrong as there are not plenty of ornaments. In fact there are none. Another small batch is coming in tomorrow & when they're gone, they're gone. After that, we'll offer the Sessions video as part of some other special package until they run out. > and everyone whose already placed an order (within the > last 2 weeks) should get their's sometime next week. Whether you placed an > order on 11/13, or just yesterday, won't matter. You'll still get > everything next week. Derrick is correct that those who ordered recently will have their orders shipped this week & will get them soon. Basically, there was a slight delay on SOME orders as we were waiting for more inventory, but all is well & theres nothing to worry about. If you have JMerch-related questions, you can get answers very conveniently, by writing them at cutomerservice@jeweljk.com. They'll be happy to answer merchandise questions for you. And those who haven't received their orders yet, can expect them soon. Enjoy! Hope Thanksgiving was wonderful for all of you and hope you are taking the time to enjoy all this season has to offer. This is a reminder about the gift we are putting together for Jewel. As a thank you for all she has inspired in us, instead of buying a Christmas gift, we have decided to make donations to HGH/Clearwater Project. We hope this will become an ongoing EDA project, possibly even adopting a location to sponsor. So if you don't have the money now, there will be other opportunities to make a donation to this project. Many EDAS have already donated to this project. We are currently creating a card that will be presented to Jewel, by Nedra, on Christmas morning. Alan/Mr. BB has been giving us some helpful suggestions, but this project is solely the work of a group of EDAS. You still have time to donate. For your name to be on the card itself, we ask that online donations be made no later than Dec. 9th and mail in donations sent no later than Dec. 6th. This will give us time to actually put the names on the card, but Alan has assured us that all donations made before Christmas will be given to Jewel along with the EDA total. Don't feel obligated to donate, this is not meant to make anyone feel bad. But it doesn't matter how little or how much you can donate. Jewel will be given the total, but she won't know each individual donation amount. OK, now to the actual info 1. If you are mailing the donation, send a check or money order. (Cash isn't the best option, but you can send it. Just make sure you can't see it through the envelope) Make checks/money orders payable to: Higher Ground/Clearwater (absolutely nothing else!!!!) If you want to contribute toward this EDA "Giving Back To Jewel" Project, here's the instructions (below)for your convenience. Your contribution will be added to the ongoing EDA total if you follow these instructions to help us identify EDA donations. Thank you to all who have contributed already! Also, I'll be hangin around San Diego next week & plan on hitting Java Joe's next Thursday (12/9) for Cindy Lee Berryhill's gig & possibly Saturday the 11th for Elizabeth Hummel's gig there. If you're in that area, stop by for some good tunes & to keep me company. ;-) Alan _______________________________ If you'd like to participate in the EDA "Giving Back To Jewel" HGH project, you may contribute directly to HGH/Clearwater either by mail or through the HGH website. You can determine what is most convenient for you. Here are the exact procedures to follow to be counted in the ongoing EDA total. PLEASE, follow these instructions carefully. If you do, we'll be able to periodically update you on how much the EDAs have contributed & provide the "card team" with an accurate list of EDAs who participate. #1-For those who prefer mailing their contribution: You can send a check or money order. (Cash being sent through the mail is not recommended, but you can do it.) Please make any checks or money orders payable to: Higher Ground/Clearwater (Please DO NOT make them out to HGH, EDA Project, Jewel, or anything else!) Please write "EDA" in the memo line & in the mailing address as follows. Mail it directly to HGH at: Higher Ground For Humanity Attention: EDA PMB #302 300 CVD #108A Carlsbad, CA 92008 USA #2 For those who prefer the ease of using a credit card for their contribution: Go to the HGH Website at: http://www.highergroundhumanity.org. At the site is a very simple form so that you can donate with a credit card very easily. Increments of $5, $10, $15 etc are already in a pop-up menu for your convenience. This is also the recommended procedure for all international EDAs wishing to participate. The cool thing about international EDAs using a credit card is that once you choose your amount, it automatically converts your withdrawal at the current exchange rate! Great, huh? If you don't have a credit card, perhaps an EDA (with a credit card) in your country can help you. IMPORTANT: The one thing to remember if you choose to use a credit card on the website form, is to please write "EDA" in addition to your name in the "name" field of the form. Please don't forget this one little thing! The HGH staff processing credit card donations know to look for "EDA" in the name field. If you follow these instructions, your donation will be added to the EDA total & to the list of names we forward to the card design team. Needless to say, everyone on the J-Team, at HGH & Clearwater thank you for being such thoughtful fans. You are amazing! Cheers! Alan PS. It explores many thing, including Jewel's early life and her thoughts on fame and being a celebrity. Here is an interesting paragraph on how Jewel became know as just Jewel, and not Jewel Kilcher. "I wanted the almbum to say Jewel Kilcher on the cover, but they misunderstood and thought I wanted it to just say Jewel. They told me it was too late to change the cover but that I shouldn't be too upset. They said they expected the album to sell only about 300 000 copies. They said nobody would notice and they'd fix the name on the second album. Of course, when an album sells 11 million copies, you become Jewel" It also mentions Jewel's change in attitude when she was about 18. "I like to call it my rewiring phase...finally, I told myself 'Jewel, nobody's going to come in and save you. You'r going to have to get over this by yourself. Your going to have to start to do something for yourself" Just some interesting stuff, and it was nice to see her in Australian papers! :-) Jeremy **The Scorpion, Peace Loving, and Kind & Gentle Angel!** My ICQ number is 42872979. Jewel has a starring role in the new film "Ride With the Devil" Web posted on: Wednesday, November 24, 1999 3:15:05 PM EST By Jamie Allen CNN Interactive Senior Writer (CNN) -- No one can accuse Jewel of shying away from her dreams. The folk singer who has sold more than 14 million albums added "author" to her resumé in 1998 with the publication of her book of highly personal poetry, "A Night Without Armor." And now, Jewel has another job title: actress. In her feature-film introduction -- one of the most conspicuous acting debuts in recent years -- Jewel stars opposite Tobey Maguire, Skeet Ulrich and Jeffrey Wright in director Ang Lee's U.S. Civil War epic "Ride With the Devil." It's based on the Daniel Woodrell novel "Woe To Live On" and goes into limited release over the Thanksgiving weekend. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ "I was aware that I was going to be open to a lot of criticism. I was aware that ... I would look bad at some point in my career. And knowing that, I went ahead and did it." -- Jewel ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Jewel plays Sue Lee Shelley, a widow who provides feminine balance and allure to a band of bushwhackers fighting for the Confederacy in the Kansas-Missouri border wars. The film, a sort of anti-"Gone With the Wind," deals with a montage of themes -- slavery and loyalty, growing up and dying, murder and revenge. In her supporting role, under Lee's direction, Jewel comes of age, moving from young object of desire to mother, to wife. As she does when singing on MTV and VH1, Jewel the actress receives the camera well. Her Nordic countenance -- prominent cheekbones and silky hair -- augments her character's 19th-century provincial manner. So, can she act? Lee, the acclaimed director of "Sense and Sensibility" (1995) and "The Ice Storm (1997), may be the best person to ask. "She's just very right for the part," says Lee, who hadn't heard of Jewel prior to a suggestion from his casting director, Avy Kaufman. "I didn't know her (as a singer)," Lee says, but she was right for the part, with her personality, intelligence -- because this is the only female part among the boys. You need that center of attention, that feminine dominance and sexuality and intelligence and she had all that. "I spent about three months observing, participating in her acting lessons, then we did a screen test," says Lee. "After meeting with all the others actors, I said, 'She's the risk I want to take.' "She was quite good and she was very devoted to her part," says Lee. Tai chi? The transformation of singer to actress wasn't effortless. Lee took Jewel under his wing, teaching her drama-school basics like the meaning of "hitting her mark," while resorting to unconventional methods of bringing out the actor within. For instance, Lee taught Jewel the art of tai chi, a physical and spiritual regimen of slow-motion movements that originated in China. "My character had to be really earthy, really grounded, feminine and strong and confident," Jewel says. "She had to be so confident and womanly that she made these strong, murderous men feel like children. And that isn't acting, that's getting a person that's real grounded. I wasn't real grounded at that time in my life. I grew up that way, but all of a sudden I was famous, I had a stalker at the time, and I was working with the best director. "I was really intimidated. I was really timid. And so a lot of what Ang did with me was trying to get me grounded and I think that's why he had me do tai chi, just trying to get me settled." While she was seeking help from Lee, Jewel was getting little advice from the actors on the set -- at least, not at first. "We bumped her around the first couple of weeks," says Maguire. "But she was there to work and she was serious, so she earned her stripes." "She was pretty raw and technically she didn't know what was going on and that's understandable," says Ulrich. "So we sat back and laughed. We had all been there, we had all been the ones who didn't know what to do. I remember my first film was terrifying, so it was nice to sit back like I was Jack Lemmon or something." Even at this interview at the Toronto Film Festival earlier this year, Jewel still seemed a little out of place. Wearing sweats, a faded blue T-shirt and a jeans jacket, she looked over at Ulrich, standing nearby wearing a hip brown dress shirt and black pants, and said, "I didn't know we were supposed to dress up." Jewel's roots It turns out that Jewel has similarities to her character. Lee says that's one reason he took his chances with her. Raised in Alaska by a family that centered its activities on performance, Jewel -- full name Jewel Kilcher -- thrived on singing, songwriting and local theater. Music became her main outlet as her parents split and she spent time living with her mother, then her father. She eventually made her way to California, living in a Volkswagen bus in San Diego before being discovered at a local coffeehouse playing the tunes that would later be heard on her first album, "Pieces of You" (1995). This young blonde had snidely remarked in her hit single "Who Will Save Your Soul," from that album: "People living their lives for you on TV / They say they're better than you and you agree." Soon Jewel was on TV, herself, her music rising up the charts. "Pieces" has sold over 10 million copies to date. Her much-anticipated follow-up, "Spirit" (1998), has sold 4 million copies. The same year it was released, "A Night Without Armor" spent weeks on best-seller lists. But Jewel describes herself as "really ambitious" -- and she says it as if she's making an excuse for wanting to accomplish more. Her next mountain was acting. The trouble with fame "I was horrified," Jewel, 25, says now of her "Ride With the Devil" experience. While she says she always had plans to act, Jewel believes her fame in the music industry worked against her plans to fulfill that goal. "Fame is an odd creature," she says. "It has a life of its own and it has an influence on you, which is a force to be reckoned with. Things change when you're famous. My own person has always been most concerned with growing, above anything else, with no fear of failure. Failure is secondary to growth. You're going to fail, you're going to look bad sometimes if you're pushing beyond what you're comfortable with. To have that kind of courage pre-fame is real easy because if you fall on your ass, who cares? "When you're famous, it's in front of the whole world and the world does not value growth over perfection," she says. "The world values perfection and product over growth and they're very unforgiving. That can really override the creative process. It causes self-censorship. It makes you go, 'I've got to be safe. I'm going to stick with what I know.' "So I was aware of that when I went into the book-writing and when I went into film. I was aware that I was going to be open to a lot of criticism. I was aware that I was going to be starting two professions that I didn't have completely wired and that I would look bad at some point in my career. And knowing that, I went ahead and did it, because otherwise you die creatively and to die at that young age would be really torturous." Her attitude earned the respect of her acting peers. "I thought it was really courageous that she chose to do this thing in the first place," says Maguire, "especially with her high profile and the idea that people would be watching her, and their expectations of her." Ultimately, Ulrich says Jewel was perfect for the part of Sue Lee, perhaps more than she realized at first. Her roots in rural Alaska provided the foundation. "I think she was much closer to the character than she thought," says Ulrich. "I think it was a relief to her to realize that there was a reason Ang cast her and it wasn't a fluke and there wasn't some other thing behind it. It was that she could do it, so it was good to see her really relax. "The thing that impresses me is that she doesn't stand apart from the film," says Ulrich. "It all works as a whole." Despite the praise, Jewel says she has no plans to stop making music. She has a song, "What's Simple Is True," on the "Ride With the Devil" soundtrack, and her third album, a Christmas-themed CD -- "Joy: a Holiday Collection" -- was released November 2. Music is the art form she remains true to. But she says she'll never stop chasing new dreams -- and failures. "I like jumping into the deep end of the pool," she says. "This movie, to pick such a hard dramatic role for your first role was horrifying. It took years off my life. "But at the same time, I loved doing it. I don't know if it's a perversity. There's a lot at stake and if you pull it off it's good and if you don't, you're screwed. You don't gain a lot by not risking a lot." Well we are working hard on the card and we are coming up with various ideas for the message right now. Since the last date for giving the card to Alan(Mr. BB) is the 18th and we want to have everybody's name on it earlier then that. We suggest DONATING AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. Just to ensure your name will be on there. Here is how you donate from alan's email: If you'd like to participate in the EDA "Giving Back To Jewel" HGH/Clearwater Project AND have your name listed on the "EDA Donation List" to be included with the EDA card we'll be giving to Jewel on Christmas, please follow the most convenient instructions for you: You can contribute directly to HGH/Clearwater either by mail or through the HGH website. You can determine what is most convenient. Here are the exact procedures to follow to be counted in the ongoing EDA total. PLEASE, follow these instructions carefully. If you do, we'll be able to periodically update you on how much the EDAs have contributed & provide the "card team" with an accurate list of all EDAs who participated. #1-For those who prefer mailing their contribution: You can send a check or money order. (Cash being sent through the mail is not recommended, but you can do it.) Please make any checks or money orders payable to: Higher Ground/Clearwater (Please DO NOT make them out to HGH, EDA Project, Jewel, or anything else!) Please write "EDA" in the memo line or in the mailing address as follows. Mail it directly to HGH at: Higher Ground For Humanity Attention: EDA (<-don't forget this line!) PMB #302 300 CVD #108A Carlsbad, CA 92008 USA #2 For those who prefer the ease of using a credit card for their contribution: Go to the HGH Website at: http://www.highergroundhumanity.org. At the site is a very simple form so that you can donate with a credit card very easily. Increments of $1, $5, $10, etc are already in a pop-up menu for your convenience. We'd love to see this become an ongoing project & to eventually have EDAs contributing real "hands on" help with new Clearwater Project locations. For now, we'll continue to keep an ongoing total running for all EDAs who follow the above procedures & depending on how much money is raised, perhaps the EDAs can adopt a specific location. We'll keep all that open for later discussion & let you concentrate on this particular project for now. If you guys have any suggestions or questions about the card or message please feel free to email me. Also try not to weigh down Alan with so many emails, because in the end he forwards them to me to answer anyway. So happy Jewel Loving, Chandini V. This is how Jewel begins to answer a question about how she stayed focused acting in her film debut as a Civil War era Southern maiden in RIDE WITH THE DEVIL. What she’s really doing is fabricating for the media more legends about her upbringing "I come from where there’s a code of how you get to know people. You don’t assume to know people. You have to learn their respect and likewise." By now most everyone knows that the current pop-folk music darling Jewel was raised on a ranch in Alaska without the benefits of plumbing or television. It’s also well known that in order to save money and concentrate on her goals of becoming a successful singer while living in San Diego, she camped out in a van for a few months subsisting on carrots and peanut butter. What may not be known is that she left Alaska as a sophomore in High School and attended The Michigan Arts Academy to pursue art, acting, music and dance. And now at 25 she is pursuing one of those other artistic endeavors by co-starring -- along with other young up-and-coming stars Skeet Ulrich, Tobey Maguire and Jeffrey Wright -- in Ang Lee’s Civil War period drama RIDE WITH THE DEVIL. Jewel has a candid freshness about her that is part and parcel to her stage presence as singer and while talking with her it’s easy to believe that the role of the earnest, hard working character was written for her. She plays Sue Lee, a single, progressive woman who runs a ranch house in the Kansas / Missouri area in the 1860’s who falls in love with Maguire and Ulrich's characters. When asked about the similarities with Sue Lee she agrees that she could relate. She explains that Sue Lee is; "very earthy [with] an earthy sensuality and she lives on the land, works the land. I grew up working the fields, with a lot of physical labor." No matter what legends abound on Jewel’s life she faces a lot of cynicism in taking the leap from platinum music star to the big screen movie actress. She is conscious of this attitude saying defiantly, "I come from the music world and everyone wants to hate you when you make the transition to another art." It may be because of this that she has chosen a pretty respectable first role. On her choice she comments; "You can’t control how people respond to you but you can control what you do and what kind of role you take." When asked why she chose this role as opposed to an easier role like a romantic comedy she smiles and comments; "If I took BODYGUARD 2 it would have been a certain kind of movie and I would have been regarded in a certain kind of way. But, if you want to be taken seriously do a real role." BORED WITH SINGING The truth is Jewel was getting bored with her singing and she wanted a break from touring. So an opportunity to pursue a different artistic direction seemed necessary. On this point Jewel sounds a bit like an old sage saying, "Every field needs to be left fallow for it to bear fruit again." Then she concedes, "I can’t just sing and tour constantly and act like it’s still inspiring me to do it. Plus, I was raised by a family where I was taught to basket weave, to sculpt, to sing, to dance." When asked if she will take anything from the movie experience into her singing career she comments; "I won’t be writing songs about sitting in my movie trailer or anything." But she adds that while the rhythm of acting is different the mental process is similar to writing songs; "Getting into character is the same thing when I write, as it is when I’m performing. Acting helped me go into a more subconscious level where you [usually] record people’s emotional lives as a writer." FAILURE IS NOT AN OPTION Jewel admits that she was unsure of herself and a bit intimidated in her new field. "You talk about going from zero to a hundred. When I’m on stage I’m comfortable, I’m competent, all these things…but you get me acting", she makes a grimacing face and laughs, “It’s not like I surrounded myself with actors who would make me look better. It seemed like the guys could do this in their sleep. I had to spend every free second on how the fuck I was going to get myself doing it. I was stressing out while the guys were like, ‘Whoo-hoo this is going to be a great movie.’ I was like ‘Oh nooo!’" "I came in with zero experience and I could have compromised the entire film,” she says matter of factly. But despite her occasional trepidations Jewel says she enjoys taking on new challenges; "I’d rather drown in the deep end of the pool. If I’m not on the edge of failure I’m not challenged and that’s embarrassing when you’re only 25." The most difficult part of the role was adapting to the necessary physical skills needed for film acting as well as slowing down to fit into a 19th century pace; "For this period piece I had to drop all modern mannerisms, habits and speech patterns. I couldn’t use my hands or my feet." She also notes the amusing adversity she had with the tight fitting period clothing she had to wear; "At first I was so into the corset. I thought ‘Oh you’ll never get me out of this. This is an addiction.’ Then you get bruised kidneys and you start going ’Uggghh It hurts’." MY DIRECTOR MY GURU Jewel credits her performance to director Ang Lee; "My performance you see is him. He told me everything: ‘Don’t use you’re hands. Don’t move your eyes. Up on screen your face is that big, you can’t move around quickly’." She adds; " I just had so much faith in Ang. I felt like he wouldn’t let me do a bad job and he didn’t." One technique Ang used was to have her practice Tai Chi. "He wanted me to be really balanced in meditation." Although she adds with a smile that she was still a bit frustrated; "It wasn’t a real acting lesson. I was like "Is this helping me act now? You sure this is going to work? Will I act good now?" When asked about directors exploiting her beauty and her name for monetary value she emphatically defends Ang’s motives for casting her in the role as Sue Lee; "You can never accuse Ang of putting me in his movie to be sensational. Other directors would put me in a movie simply because my name would draw ticket sales and it would do nothing for my career. Ang put me in the position because he believed I was the right person for the job." All the actors had to attend a boot camp for a few weeks to learn how to ride a horse, shoot a gun and immerse themselves in 19th century customs, literature and attitudes. Jewel laughs that her boot camp was different than the guy’s camp because while they were learning to handle all the activities of life on the ranch she had to learn how to act. Although she notes that it was nice to have a few givens in the boot camp like practicing for one scene where she has to lead a team of oxen. SEX SCENES And what about her appearing nude in a scene? She shows one breast and it is used to feed a baby, she states firmly. There is also one darkly lit restrained sex scene between Jewel and Maguire. Jewel laughs and makes funny faces about the difficulty of shooting the scene; "It’s kind of one of those things where if the water is cold you just have to jump. You can’t think about it because it’s not going to make the water any warmer." She also notes how humbling and silly it can get; "You’re sitting there kissing someone and [the director] says; ‘Make more noises. More wet noises. And could you moan a little?’ And you’re like ‘Gawd!’ There is no hope of it being romantic. It’s not a romantic ordeal." CAREER PHYSICS Jewel’s performance is understated but she certainly doesn’t embarrass herself. She doesn’t think she could have achieved greatness the first time. She laughs about this, "It got to where I wasn’t having a heart attack every time. Which was a nice phase." But then adds, " I never got to the point where I thought, ‘Oh my god I’m good.’" And what book did Jewel just put down? Jewel answers "A book on quantum physics called ‘Schrodinger’s Kittens’. It’s a great book." She continues; " Quantum physics is, for me, the most exciting branch of science and physics right now." Then playing the part of the wise sage again she expands on this; "Quantum physics is dealing with such a particle quantum level of the universe that you have to start meeting the maker. It’s looking like in quantum physics, science and religion are going to start having to come together to some degree." Will Jewel’s next role be a Sci-Fi thriller? Will she write a song about this? Does quantum physics have something to do with the cowboy code? Or maybe this is more media fodder that Jewel is composing to add to her already renowned career. But there's romance underneath all the bloodshed. The young widow played by pop songstress Jewel in her feature film debut, falls for (sigh) Bushwacker Toby Maguire. Despite impressive turns by Maguire and Jeffrey Wright (who plays a former slave) and several ripsnorting battle scenes, too many things make Ride With The Devil unintentionally humorous. Just try not to giggle at the horrendously fake wigs and cornpone dialogue. When Jewel asks Maguire, "Have you ever bedded with a woman?" he responds, "Girl, I've killed 15 men." Good enough for her! Jewel, dressed in her best peasant duds, remains credible, even when she has to plow a field, breast-feed her baby (shown twice) and say things like "I brung you some supper." Now it is Jewel's turn to test whether the magic that has catapulted her to fame in the music world translates to the silver screen. The trick is to disappear into a character so audiences forget they are watching a popular singer. Sinatra pulled this off some of the time; Madonna has yet to. In "Ride With the Devil," Jewel is surprisingly effective at turning herself into a Civil War widow who is part Scarlett O'Hara, part Melanie Wilkes. One reason Jewel is believable on film may be the period costumes, which are a far cry from the low-cut T-shirts, jean jackets and leather trousers her fans are used to seeing her wear. Jewel, 25, studied acting in boarding school and had an inkling she'd be able to finesse a movie role. Still, it was no sure thing. "I definitely like a challenge, but picking such a hard dramatic role for my first movie was like jumping into the deep end of the pool," she says, sipping tea late one morning. "It was horrifying. Oh f--, I was worried. It took years off my life. At the same time, I loved the perversity of knowing there is a lot at stake and if you pull it off, it's good, and if you don't, you're screwed." Her speaking voice has the same lilting, honey tone heard on her best-selling albums, "Pieces of You" and "Spirit," and on her new release, "Joy: A Holiday Collection." With her oval face and long, straight blond hair, she resembles Helen Hunt, if Hunt ate three square meals a day. Jewel has that rare ability, especially for a celebrity, of being right there, thoughtfully answering each question with no apparent desire to be somewhere else. Or maybe she really is a good actress. Pushing herself to do something outside her field would have been a lot easier if her CDs weren't all over record stores, she says. "That kind of courage pre-fame is real easy, because if you fall on your ass, who cares? But fame is an odd creature. It has a life of its own and an influence on you, which is a force to be reckoned with. "When you're famous and you fail, it's in front of the whole world. The world does not value growth over perfection. People are very unforgiving, and that causes self-censorship. It makes you go, 'Ooh, I've got to be safe and stick with what I know.' I knew I might look bad, and knowing that, I went ahead and did it because otherwise you die creatively." Jewel had been looking to make a movie, but the timing had to be right so it wouldn't interfere with her recording or touring schedule. Just as a window of opportunity opened, her agents were approached by Avy Kaufman, casting director for "Ride With the Devil." "I'm way over 40, so I didn't know who Jewel was," says Ang Lee, the film's director, who is best known for "Sense and Sensibility." Kaufman sent him Jewel's music videos as well as a tape of her playing Dorothy in "The Wizard of Oz" as a teenager. Meeting with Jewel, Lee made it clear she would have to take acting lessons for three months before any casting decision was made. "I was very frank with her. She was so devoted to the possibility of acting in this movie, she agreed to the lessons." This proved to be more stressful than she thought. "I was touring and taking acting lessons in between," Jewel recalls. "I had some days where I went, 'I'm going to be all right' and other days where it was like 'Uh, I can't get out of bed.' " Lee suggested she take up tai chi as a way to relax and get into the role. "He could see I wasn't real grounded at that time of my life. All of a sudden I was famous and I had a stalker during that time and I was working with this brilliant director, who really intimidated me. The tai chi was just to get me settled." Even with all that going on, Lee's instincts told him Jewel was up to the role. "Her part doesn't require her to carry the movie, so I didn't think it was such a big risk," he says. It could be a risk with a payoff if her legion of fans, most of them young women, rush to see her in "Ride With the Devil." The film stars Tobey Maguire and Skeet Ulrich, who are not hot enough yet to get people into theaters on the strength of their names. However, as the film's screenwriter, James Schamus, points out: "Being a star in one area is no guarantee of ticket sales in another." He admires Jewel for her willingness to "completely erase her rock-star personality on the set. She worked like a maniac on this movie. You don't see people work like that too often." The first few weeks on the set, "Jewel was pretty raw," Ulrich says. "She didn't know what was going on when it came to technique. She didn't even know what a mark was," he adds, referring to where actors are supposed to stand. But she caught on quickly. Ulrich thinks it helped that she seems in some ways like her character, Sue Lee, a shy Southern woman who comes into her own when she has to fend for herself during the grueling war years. "Civil War widows became quite notorious by 1862-63," Schamus explains. "Because they were sexually aware, they realized that in order to survive and get through the battle, they really had to go out there and attract husbands. There was a kind of sexuality and assertiveness these women had going after their next guy. They began to address men in public and introduce themselves -- all things that were quite shocking at the time." Jewel nails her character's sexuality, and there were other ways in which she could relate to Sue Lee. "I was raised on the land. I was raised to be feminine, but not in the kind of contrived way where you are playing a game of seducing men," she says. "But I have never lost a husband; I have never slept with a man who ended up dying right afterward." She also never wore a corset before she had to squeeze into one for her role. Like all self-respecting 19th century women, Sue Lee wouldn't have gone out without one. "That was a hard part about the movie for me. The corset was so tight, I couldn't breathe when I bent over. I wanted to die," Jewel recalls. Everything else about making a movie appealed to her, however, and she would like to do it again, although writing songs and singing take precedence. "Music allows you to talk directly to people. No other art medium does that. I can actually tell people what I think. I can get in front of kids and say, 'Don't lose hope' or 'Gee, I feel like s--.' " Next time, she would like to be in a contemporary film. But she isn't rushing into anything. "One of the nice things about the position I'm in is that I don't have to be an actress," Jewel says. "I don't need the money, so I don't have to take parts I don't want. It's a purely creative endeavor. That's a luxury most actors don't have. I can wait and be real picky." Brooks (garth) debuted at #13 on this week's Billboard 200 albums chart, while Jewel's album sits at #43 in its fourth week on the chart. The folk-pop singer/actress' disc features religious songs backed by choral and orchestral arrangements as well as originals, including a song she wrote in Latin, "Gloria" (RealAudio excerpt), and a Christmas version of her hit single "Hands" (RealAudio excerpt). "The Jewel album seems to be far and away the most popular holiday release," said Howard Krumholtz, rock buyer at Tower Records on the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles. another article on the same topic said that her album would likely be the best selling of the season. thought you'd be interested. cya steve From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Mon Dec 6 15:50:05 1999 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id PAA01178 for jewel-news-outgoing; Mon, 6 Dec 1999 15:49:10 -0500 (EST) Message-Id: <199912062049.PAA01178@smoe.org> Date: Mon, 6 Dec 1999 04:49:01 -0800 (PST) From: Jeremy Hodgins To: jewel-news@smoe.org Subject: Jewel-News: * New Wallpaper. To: jewel@smoe.org Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hi all, Having a great time here in San Diego. I want to quickly update you on a few things & since I have limited time & type slooooooow, I'm going to mix various info together here. First, Jewel's website calendar has been significantly updated with many more TV broadcasts (& repeats of older broadcasts) listed. Please check it for the latest accurate info. I'm getting a few questions repeatedly, so here's the answers to those: > Is it too late to have my name with the card being given to Jewel > from the EDAs?>> No, in fact you have until December 23rd, which is the day we all break for the holidays. It's been suggested (& we agree) that all the EDAs who are so generously donating to HGH/Clearwater will be listed on a seperate sheet that will be included with Jewel's card. This serves two excellent puposes. One, it allows the card design team to concentrate on creating a beautiful card & message without being bogged down trying to cram hundreds of names on it. And two, it allows many more EDAs who participated to have their names included with the card AND to have their contribution added to the total by Christmas. So YES, there's still time to have your name included. > I'm getting an Error message when trying to donate. What can I do? For people visiting the HGH site to donate, we're aware a few international EDAs have had difficulty donating online. It seems Australia has had the most problems & we're not sure why. Here's a solution for people outside the US that get error messages. Try again first, but if that doesn't work fill out the form as you would normally, but change the country field to USA. Since you aren't ordering anything, this should solve the problem & not effect your end. HGH will still have all the correct info needed for this project & your donation should work just fine. > Is the Jewel 1999 Christmas ornament still available? No, they are sold out. Gone. New one next year. > Where is the "Joy" VIDEO available? The official Joy video (aka Sessions at West 54th St) is only available for purchase from Jewel's website store & is not going to be in stores. You can also get it from some PBS stations for a $100 donation. At the moment, we do have it available SEPERATELY for $19.95 for phone or FAX ordering ONLY. Phone JMerch at 1-877-295-3935. If you have any questions, simply write them at customerservice@jeweljk.com. That's about it today. For those in the San Diego area, come on by Java Joe's in OB tomorrow night (Thursday) for Cindy Lee Berryhill. I'd enjoy your company! I'll also be there Saturday night for Elizabeth Hummel. She was unable to perform because her throat was noticeable soar. Because of this, there is a possibility that she will be unable to perform on the Tonight Show this evening. She finished her apearance on STAR at 5:15 and according to the Tonight Show website taping begins at 5:00. Since musical guests usually take the last ten minutes of the 1.5 hour show, that means Jewel has a little over 1 hour to recover if she is to sing on the Tonight Show. I'm sure that if she is able to give a quality performance that Jewel will fight through this. The reason she gave for being sick was she caught her boyfriend and Poltz's hangovers (she was being sarcastic). They were in Las Vegas over the weekend for the rodeo championships and the two guys stayed up late smashing bottles in their hotel room. According to Jewel, Poltz also stripped down in the middle of the casino (while still playing blackjack) because he thought he lost his necklace and he was trying to find it in his clothes. Instead of singing live, Jewel was interviewed on the radio show and they played the following recorded songs: "Hands (Christmas Version)" "WWSYS (from the STAR lounge)" "What's Simple is True" "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" I hope she recovers enough to perform tonight! I have been replying to these privately. While the PBS network (the United States' Public Broadcasting System) did air it a couple of weekends or so ago, and DOES plan a re-airing on Christmas weekend, it is up to each and every affiliate station throughout the USA as to when THEY will actually air it. They have the right to and DO deviate from the "national" schedule often, especially on weekends when there really is no set national schedule anyway. (for instance, It has not aired in my area yet, it airs on the 18th here). This is how you can best find out when this show will air in your area, either for the first time or a repeat airing or two....... 1) get out your phone book and call your local PBS station. Nothing works better than to talk to the people who know best. I called mine and found out when it airs here in minutes :-) or, if you can't find the stations' listing and you have web access....... 2) Head to http://www.pbs.org and then spot the "Station Finder" field in the top right corner of the screen. Fill in your zip code, click "go" and then you will be taken to a page that shows all of the PBS stations that serve your zip code, their address, phone number, an individual web site for THAT station (if it has one), and in that case, a link to their online TV Schedule. If for some reason you don't know your zip code, or want to find the station/info for an area other than your own (like if you will be in another city for the holidays and want to see when it airs there, like me), just fill in any five digits for the zip code (11111 works fine), click "go" and then at the bottom of the next page you go to you will see a station finder for any state. Choose the state you want, click "show stations" and you are on your way. :-) By utilizing this information, you should be able to find out when the show airs or re-airs in your area. Good luck and enjoy the show :-) Mike :-) P.S. For those that are new here and have no idea what "Sessions At West 54th" is, it is a weekly show on PBS where a musical guest or two struts their stuff. Jewel's was taped in September (over 100 list members and/or guests attended!) and it initially aired two weeks ago on many of the PBS stations. On the show Jewel sings many of the songs on her recently released holiday CD "Joy: A Holiday Collection" and a couple of her hits. * If you are new to the Jewel list and need a helping hand, * or have a burning question about Jewel and/or the list, * The Jewel/EveryDay Angels List Homepage & Guide is at: * http://www.quackquack.net/jewel * Many basic/common Jewel and list questions can be answered there :-) * * If you can't find the answer on the page have any list related * questions, please feel free to email me at ducksoup@quackquack.net * or you can IM me on either of the AOL names below: * DuckOfPrey or WhyADuck55 and/on AOL or AOL Instant Messenger From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Thu Dec 9 04:02:22 1999 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id EAA29071 for jewel-news-outgoing; Thu, 9 Dec 1999 04:02:13 -0500 (EST) Message-Id: <199912090902.EAA29071@smoe.org> Date: Wed, 08 Dec 1999 11:18:16 -0500 To: jewel@smoe.org From: Mike Connell Subject: Jewel-News: Jewel's VH1 Storytellers to re-air next week! She's never won a Grammy. (should have though! Lee Ann Rimes stole it) TSO: The Ghosts of Christmas Eve Atlantic recording artists Trans-Siberian Orchestra (TSO), Grammy Award winner and pop music sensation Jewel and Tony Award winner Michael Crawford headline an hour-long television spectacular. Hosted and narrated by veteran stage actor Ossie Davis, the fairytale epic underscores the power of love during the holidays and brings together some of the most extraordinary musical talent ever to share the stage. The award-winning Trans-Siberian Orchestra performs symphonic rock works blending the theatricality of Andrew Lloyd Webber, the poetic storytelling of Harry Chapin, the thematic drive of Yes and the raw edge of Aerosmith. Filmed entirely on location at the highly ornate, historic Loews Jersey Theatre in Jersey City, NJ, the special tells the story of a 14-year-old runaway who yearns to return home and be with her family for the holidays. Seeking a refuge from the cold weather, she breaks into an abandoned theater and instead of merely providing temporary shelter, the experience changes her life forever. Through loose pages that fall out of the young girl's diary, viewers learn of her desire to return home to her family. But, without a bus ticket or a dime to her name, the youngster takes solace in the quiet theater and falls asleep. The caretaker, portrayed by Davis, takes stage right of the ornate theater and with the flip of a switch sets the performances in motion. The runaway awakens to find a bus ticket and some money slipped inside her diary and leaves the theater with happy memories and her chance to return home for the holidays. Holiday selections performed include: TSO's "Come All Ye Faithful," "Good King Joy" and "Christmas Canon;" Jewel performing "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" (from her new album, "Joy: A Holiday Collection") and Tony Award winner Michael Crawford's unforgettable rendition of "O Holy Night" (from "Michael Crawford: A Christmas Album"). Since I was at the taping, I thought I'd let you all know what it was really like. Well, because Jewel failed to sing for her radio interview an hour earlier, we were really worried that she wasn't going to appear. But when Jay came out he told the audience that although Jewel was ill she was a trooper and would still be appaering. Anyway, when Jewel's time came along she sang her Christmas song and did the interview as planned. It was obvious during her singing that she was ill because she turned around twice in between her lines just to hide her coughing. And as she told Jay during the interview, the doctor said she was on the verge of pneumonia. Well, when the show ended the host informed the audience that because of some technical problems (Jewel's audible weezing while breathing during her song) they would need to do Jewel's song again. Well that's when Jewel started entertaining. The crew had to reset some of the instruments and stuff like that so Jewel starts getting a little chatty to the audience. She apologized for being off pitch and asked, "Don't I walk so graciously in these shoes?" Jewel is obviously not a high-heel kind of girl. Then when some guy gave her a cup of water she said, "I know what you're trying to do...give me some whiskey to get me going, right?" The two yuppies sitting next to me actually commented on how down to earth she was and said they thought she was the highlight of the show. So, she starts the song again, with obvious difficulty and when it gets to the part where she goes real high she just makes this funny noise and turns to the producer and says, "Can't you just like, cut that or something...no..alright." Again, she started to sing and when she nailed the high part you can see the smirk of relief on her face. She got through it on the third try with no wheezing and only minimal coughing. The whole audience cheered, she waved and escaped back stage, probably to throw on sweatpants and rush home to bed. It was pretty cool. The other actress that appeared didn't seem too cool about Jewel getting so much attention. She as rather snotty and awfully flaky, but my sources say she's a true Beverly Hills girl. Course, this whole episode still doesn't beat what happened at the Craig Kilborne show the last time she appeared. Now, this is funny. First of all, the Kilborne show was awesome to go to because the audience is so small and the interview so long. Jewel was about ten feet from me and when I saw her roadie bring out the blue guitar I was so psyched!! Seeing her sing "What's Simple is True" with just the guitar really makes me believe she should ditch her band for her next tour. Anyway, during the commercial her roadie was messing with her equipment and Jewel was chatting with Craig. Meanwhile, the audience-host guy that stands out there with everyone and talks to them was striking up a conversation between an old lady in the back row and a young kid in the front row, who both happened to be from Arkansas. Well, the old lady yelled down to the kid in the front row, "Are you a guy or a girl?" Jewel thought the lady was talking about her long-haired roadie who was down there fixing her equipment, not an audience member from Arkansas, and she snapped back, "I think you need to get some glasses, lady!!" Well, for the rest of the show the audience-host had some not-so-kind remarks to make about Jewel that had the audience laughing. Jerk. Anyway, what was really cool was that they needed to record some promo for a commercial and they had Jewel sing just the end of "You Were Meant for Me" with Craig's arm around her. Then when she got to the end, Craig finished and sang the last "me." Well, after the first take the producer asked her if she could sing a couple more lines and she says, "I could do the whole song if you want." That's when me and my friend start screaming, "Do it!! Yeah!! The whole song!!" Jewel looks over at us, and politely says, "Now, behave!" Maybe she recognized us as the only two chicks to give a standing, screaming ovation two days before when she sang, "What's Simple is True" on the Tonight Show. (She flashed us the peace sign when we did it). Anyway, we shut our mouths and they finished the promo of "You Were Meant for Me" and it was really cool. The audience-host guy was still cracking jokes about Jewel being a bitch, but we just ignored him. Jerk. Overall, both tapings were awesome. Last night Jewel was obviously being a trooper and we felt for her. If you ever have the chance to go to a taping, I recommend you go, because behind the scenes is where the cool stuff goes on. TSO: The Ghosts of Christmas Eve Atlantic recording artists Trans-Siberian Orchestra (TSO), Grammy Award winner and pop music sensation Jewel and Tony Award winner Michael Crawford headline an hour-long television spectacular. Susana The Azorean Angel ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ December=A013, 1999 Jewel sparkles in yule CD Album review Kathy Bula - East Valley It was brought to my attention that Christmas is just around the corner. I'm usually the one who doesn't start worrying about Christmas until sometime around Dec. 22, but this year I decided to get a head start on it. As I strung tinsel and colored lights around my room, I popped in Jewel's new Christmas CD and tried to feel merry. I soon found that, listening to the CD, I couldn't help but get into the holiday spirit. The differences between this album and her previous ones are immeasurable. Not one track sounds anything like anything she's recorded before, and it's great. >From the authentically operatic rendition of "Ave Maria" to the jazzy "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" to an incredible gospel medley, this is a solid album that explores several musical styles Jewel has never recorded before. There's even a Christmas version of "Hands," which has the same lyrics as the original but is rearranged to accommodate a choir, orchestra and Christmas bells. While calling this a Christmas song is definitely pushing it, it's so beautifully done that it's hard to complain. The string and choral arrangements on the entire album are astounding, and Jewel's vocals are by far her best to date. All in all, this is a very traditional-sounding album. Quite a few of the classic Christmas tunes are here, done in a style that walks the fine line between old-fashioned and timeless. I expected something a lot less traditional from Jewel, but after all, Christmas wouldn't be Christmas without traditions. I'd recommend lovers of Christmas music make this CD one of their holiday traditions. It got a 74, which is pretty good, since Wall Of Sound is always harsh in their reviews.. Here's what it says: Jewel Joy: A Holiday Collection Label: Atlantic Genre: Rock, Pop File Under: A Jewel Yule Rating: 74 Alaskan songbird Jewel takes on the holiday season with a selection of classics mixed with a few of her own compositions. She tackles the standards with restrained but skilled enthusiasm, walking down the snowy path of her own interpretations only on a couple of occasions. In Jewel's world, "Winter Wonderland" goes honky-tonk to good effect, with a steel pedal guitar and some of her own trademark yodeling. "Rudolph," on the other hand, becomes a mainly acoustic scatting duet with her mother, Nedra Carroll, that doesn't work nearly as well. Otherwise, she offers pretty straightforward renditions of favorites such as "Silent Night," "O Little Town of Bethlehem," and "Joy to the World," most enhanced by the participation of a choir. "O Holy Night" and "Ave Maria" especially show off Jewel's range, where she hits and holds high notes with ease. Her own contributions are hit and miss with regard to capturing the holiday spirit, but most misplaced is the Christmas version of "Hands"; don't look for the carolers to sing that one any time soon. — Kathy Mar From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Thu Dec 16 14:04:13 1999 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id OAA12552 for jewel-news-outgoing; Thu, 16 Dec 1999 14:03:47 -0500 (EST) Message-Id: <199912161903.OAA12552@smoe.org> Date: Thu, 16 Dec 1999 11:11:11 -0500 (EST) From: Mike Connell Subject: Jewel-News: Jewel feature/"chat" to be in FRIDAYS' USA Today To: Jewel@smoe.org Hi folks :-) Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk On the front page of Today's USA today there's a small blurb giving notice of a feature/"chat" with Jewel in Friday's edition. The text is below.... Mike :-) ********** Jewel spreads her collection of 'Joy' By Edna Gundersen, USA TODAY On Joy: A Holiday Collection, her first batch of holiday tunes, Jewel gravitates to classics, but not because she found inspiration in definitive recordings by such yuletide masters as Bing Crosby or Nat "King" Cole. Aside from 1997's We Three Kings by The Roches, the singer has ignored the standard seasonal discs. "I've never been a real fan of Christmas records, to tell you the truth," she says. "They're usually kind of kitschy. You get sick of listening to them." Though Jewel inserted original Face of Love and a Christmas version of pop hit Hands on the new album, she largely focused on traditional fare, including a playful Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, graceful Joy to the World and solemn Silent Night. They're not personal favorites. "I had a friend who died recently, and I picked a lot of her favorites, like O Little Town of Bethlehem and O Holy Night," she says. "I was trying for a certain tone -- celebratory, but not too centered on any one religion." Last year's Spirit (originally planned as a holiday record) and 1995's Pieces of You have sold a combined 17 million copies worldwide. Joy, at No. 34 in its sixth week, is selling modestly but could evolve into a perennial gold mine, despite a comparatively meager investment of time and labor. Between touring and writing a book of short stories and prose, Jewel recorded Joy in three days with producer Arif Mardin. "It was expedient," she says. "I'd been waiting a long time to do a record that wasn't about anything except having fun singing. It's nice to not listen to my own songwriting and to not think in terms of singles and radio." Jewel, 25, plans to spend Christmas with her boyfriend in Texas, light-years south of the frosty holidays she experienced in Alaska. "Winter was full of sleigh rides and toboggans and lots of snow," she says. "It's pretty idyllic if you like the cold, which I didn't. We were never too gift-oriented. Being poor and having a creative family meant we made a lot of arts-and-craftsy gifts for each other. We cut down our own tree. It was fun in the country. In the city, it got harder and sadder." At 16, Jewel didn't have the money to travel home for the holidays from her boarding school in Michigan. She spent Christmas alone, housesitting for a teacher. "But I enjoyed it!" she says. "I spent the time by the lake, drawing." These days, Jewel relishes her ability to lavish presents on friends and relatives, particularly her mother. What's on her own wish list? "I can't think of anything," she says after a long pause. "I hope my friends are more creative than I am." I'm happy to read that she plans on performing past her 60's. ;) Enjoy, Susana ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Jewel is a gem with many facets, including acting by Terry Lawson Knight Ridder Newspapers =A0TORONTO - Jewel views her talent like her body. "There's no favorite part," says Jewel, who has draped Jewel's body over a couch in a Toronto hotel suite, where she's doing promo interviews for her feature film debut, "Ride with the Devil." "This part is singing," she says, grabbing her forearm, "and this part is writing," she says patting a thigh. "This is acting," she, says, pointing to a stomach not quite covered by a farm-girl blouse, "and this is visual arts," she says, placing her hands on her eyes. And your best feature? "No best features," she says. "Just some not developed as much as others." By her own admission, Jewel, who doesn't use her last name of Kilcher and doesn't have a middle one, is taking "a good-sized risk" with one of those less-developed parts by taking an acting role in "Ride with the Devil," a complex but intimate look at the Civil War through the eyes of Confederate sympathizers. "Ride with the Devil," directed by Ang Lee ("The Ice Storm," "Sense and Sensibility"), is not positioned as a box-office blockbuster, but neither is it the sort of low-profile, independent project most pop stars prefer for a first, cautious step out of their comfort zone. "Ride with the Devil" stars Skeet Ulrich and Tobey Maguire, two of their generation's most lauded actors, playing bushwhackers - guerrillas who launch surprise raids on Unionists who have strayed too far from the battlefield along the Kansas-Missouri border. Jewel is a young Confederate widow who offers comfort when the harsh winter literally forces them underground, in a hidden dugout near the farm where she lives. Jewel claims to be prepared for the loupe-level appraisal her first screen appearance is certain to invite. Though her first album, "Pieces of You," was well-received critically as well as commercially, she endured derision when a book of her poetry was published in 1997 ("a schoolgirl's notebook," sniffed one critic). And her second album, "Spirit," which sold a mere 4 million, was ripe for sophomore revisionism. Her decision to do a little yodeling in her Woodstock set last summer gave Leno and Letterman monologue fodder and drew hoots from the rockist, revved-up crowd. Still, Jewel maintained a low profile at last fall's Toronto International Film Festival, where "Devil" had its North American premiere. "I'm not into making myself a target," says Jewel. "But I know it can't really be avoided. I went through it already with the book. But you know, I don't think everything I do is brilliant anyway. If I were brilliant at 23" - she is, according to most sources, 25 - "people should be studying me, but I'm not. There are plenty of valid things to criticize about me." And what did she think of her performance when she saw "Ride with the Devil?" "Well, I didn't throw up," she says, laughing. "So that's a good thing." Director Lee says he met with Jewel at the suggestion of his casting director and the film's producers. But, he said, he was perfectly willing to walk away from a project in which he had already invested nearly two years if someone he thought was wrong for the role was pushed upon him. Fortunately, he was enthusiastic about Jewel. "I liked the idea of casting someone fresh," says the soft-spoken Lee. "But she brought an honesty and a lack of pretension that was really in keeping with the character. I think those years growing up in Alaska and struggling to succeed have given her character a seasoned actor couldn't recreate." Jewel says she never asked Lee why he chose her over more experienced actors, but says she heard he told someone it was because of her teeth; they're famously crooked, and there were few visits to orthodontists during the Civil War. But she says her initial enthusiasm over winning the part gave way to self-doubt and second thoughts. Reading her fear, Lee forbade her to attend dailies, in which the day's filming is looked over. It's something Jewel says she wouldn't have done anyway, because "it would have terrified me." "She impressed me," says co-star Maguire. "I think she can have an acting career if she wants it. Plus, she just looked like someone who would have survived the Civil War. She's like, a hardy girl, you know? She's tough." Jewel said she respected the opinions of Lee and Maguire, believing they "were not going to tell me I was doing great if I wasn't." "To me, there are two secrets to survival in any endeavor. First, believe in your ability to overcome the obstacles that will always be there. Second, surround yourself with people smarter than you are, who will tell you the truth. That's your reality, that's your world. Everything else is just high school, with three girls who hate you, and three girls who love you." Jewel says she is determined to succeed in three careers, but that she can juggle just two; while she toured this summer and fall, she worked on a book of short stories that may be published next year. Then, she says, she'll concentrate on choosing another movie role, regardless of how her performance in "Ride with the Devil" is received. But while she says she hopes her acting skills will someday "be as good as, or exceed" her singing, she can easily see herself as a female Bob Dylan, on the road at 61. "I love performing. Music is the most immediate art form there is. I can write a song that night, and sing it, and whether it's to 20,000 people or two, it's just me and them, nothing in between. My thoughts on politics, religion, love, anything at all, and [I can] get it right out there. There's nothing else like it. I could give up nearly anything, but that, I can't imagine. --WebTV-Mail-28933-4505 X-URL-Title: Jewel is a gem with many facets, including acting Content-Disposition: Inline Content-Type: Text/Plain; Charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7Bit http://www.phillynews.com:80/daily_news/99/Dec/17/features/FJEW17.htm --WebTV-Mail-28933-4505-- From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Sat Dec 18 08:16:25 1999 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id IAA11425 for jewel-news-outgoing; Sat, 18 Dec 1999 08:15:59 -0500 (EST) Message-Id: <199912181315.IAA11425@smoe.org> Date: Fri, 17 Dec 1999 20:28:49 EST From: Jwlfan112@aol.com To: jewel-news@smoe.org Subject: Jewel-News: * Jewel In Digital Spew Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Jewel's in the new Digital Spew from Atlantic.. Jewel came on after Duran Duran... in her usual black leather pants and like 5 inch heals (I don't know how the hell she can walk in those things). Anyway, she opened (by herself) with Near you Always. Then she sang her usual version of WWSYS. Then she asked Steve Poltz to join her - they both sang YWMFM, I Thought I Saw You Last Night, and a killer version of Silver Lining (the crowd got into this one). Then Jewel walked off to the side of the stage and Poltzie sang Everything about You with Doug Pettibone playing the Steel guitar. He then said he had a gift for a 17 year old girl who just got straight As on her report card (remeniscent of the famous lucky lager incidents from last summer). But this time it was a bottle of milk. When the girl came to receive her gift, Poltz jumped her and totally made out with her, it was pretty funny. Closer examination with my binoculars ( I was in the last row) revealed that the so-called 17 year old was Anya Marina, Steve's girlfriend. Steve then sang Star Wars Song, which the crowd really loved. Jewel returned to the stage with Anya following. Anya threw the bottle of milk on the ground near Steve and jumped him and they macked out again. Jewel then asked if there was any good school boys that got As, and Steve's manager runs out on stage and tries to plant a kiss on Jewel, who cleverly dodges it. It was a pretty humorous scene. Jewel and Poltz ended their set with a cool duet of Love is a Rose, with each of them yodeling and improving (as in improvisations) verses. (By the way Steve mentioned during this song he's playing Java Joes Dec 22 and 23) It was a pretty cool, laid back set. Jewel looked like she was feeling much better, and in a good mood. The rest of the show was pretty cool - Big Bad Voodoo Daddy got the crowd dancing in the aisles. Melissa Etheridge, backed on drums by the animated Kenny Aronoff, rocked the place.... she really puts on a good show. Anyway, just thought I'd share.
