Alan Repost part 1: MrBB-"Jewel: A Life Uncommon" Home Video-It's almost here! Hi all, As almost everyone here knows, Jewel's long awaited home video project was officially completed several weeks ago after almost a year of constant work & production by Bibi, West, Frank & their extremely talented video team. Let me assure you, it'll be well worth the wait! Here's the information everyone has been waiting for: The video, titled "Jewel: A Life Uncommon", features an hour of vintage archival footage of Jewel's life both on & off the road as well as four complete song performances filmed earlier this year in Los Angeles at a private benefit concert for Higher Ground For Humanity. Interviews with those closest to Jewel & exclusive never before seen footage reveals what her life is like "behind the scenes" & all fans are sure to enjoy this. I received the "final cut" of the video a few days ago & although I've watched this project progress from the beginning & was directly involved recording the live performance audio tracks on it, I'd only seen miscellaneous sequences up until now. I've watched it in its entirety now several times. BiBi, West, Frank & their video team have achieved something truly incredible with this project. I found it insightful, educational, extremely fun & captivating from beginning to end! Jewel: A Life Uncommon primarily focuses on Jewel's life both on & off the road since mid 1995 & features plenty of never before seen footage from various stages of her career. There's home movies from her solo performances at Java Joe's, her first band tour in 1996 & classic clips from the struggle of her first European Tour. There's also plenty of "behind the scenes" footage at home, on the bus, in hotel rooms, in rehearsals, at video shoots & of course, on stage during this years Spirit Tour. Of particular note, is the incredible concert footage from the HGH Benefit in Los Angeles earlier this year. Included are complete performances of unreleased favorites "Down" & "Love Me Just Leave Me Alone" in highly electrified form with the 1999 band. Also included is the most phenomenal performance of "Barcelona"; a version which truly captures a real peak moment of this years tour. This sequence is absolutely mesmerizing! The incredible footage & editing is completely captivating! Also of big interest are brief interview segments with Nedra, Shane, Atz Lee, Steve Poltz, Keith Anderson & Ron Shapiro explaining how various key events in Jewel's life & career REALLY happened. I guarantee everyone will gain new insight & achieve new levels of understanding of Jewel's work by watching this video & have a very enjoyable time in the process. Much of the "behind the scenes" footage will surely amaze even the most hardcore knowledgable fans. Things the public never sees, such as the offstage comradarie of Jewel & her band, songwriting with Steve Poltz & Jewel's relationship with Atlantic Records are all explored. Footage of the incredibly difficult 1997 European Tour will surely astound American fans. A sequence of Jewel creating the song "Last Dance Rodeo" in an unheated hotel room in Norway truly captures "the muse" as its spark hits & the chorus of this unreleased fan favorite reveals itself to Jewel for the first time. A priceless moment captured for posterity. But enough on giving away content. On to what you really want to know - When will "Jewel: A Life Uncommon" be released?! You won't have to wait much longer! We're releasing it a week from next Tuesday, November 2nd, to coincide with the release of her Christmas album. You'll be able to order "Jewel: A Life Uncommon" right here direct from JMerch (at www.jeweljk.com) beginning at Midnight (Pacific Standard Time) on Monday evening November 1st/2nd at Jewel's website. It'll also be available in stores beginning Tuesday November 23rd. I thank everyone who has been patient throughout the past year as work progressed on this long awaited project! And I breathe a huge sigh of relief that all of you who haven't been so patient (& have been writing me relentlessly!) will finally be very happy campers! ;-) I knew "Jewel: A Life Uncommon" was going to be a wonderful project, but the results have far exceeded my wildest expectations. Now I anxiously await your reactions! Repost part 2: MrBB- Jewel Home Video Q & A Hi again all, As always, any informational post leads to email bombardment of questions. My post about the "Jewel: A Life Uncommon" home video release is certainly no exception. Here we go! <> Suggested retail is $19.95 US dollars. <> I don't know what the exact equivalent to $19.95 is in Canadian dollars. Approximately whatever that is. <> Atlantic plans to initially distribute it to North American markets. <> Atlantic will be initially distributing the video in North American markets so it will be available in NTSC format, which is the format utilized for North American VCRs. If you feel the video should be distributed in PAL or SECAM formats, you should take a moment & write Atlantic Records to express your wishes directly to them, since they are the distributer. If enough people request this, they may consider distributing it internationally. I'd also suggest that those who want other formats please refrain from wasting your energy complaining to those who can't help you (namely me, the EDA list or Jewel at her website) & concentrate your efforts toward convincing Atlantic Records to consider your requests. Of course anyone anywhere can easily purchase the video direct from JMerch at Jewel's website beginning at midnight on November 1st/2nd. Like all JMerch, they can ship it almost anywhere worldwide. <> No, it will only be available in Hi Fi Stereo VHS format. DVD was considered, but the much higher production costs could not be justified by the relatively small DVD demand at this time. A Jewel DVD is something being considered for the future, but not for this particular project. <> Yes, it's being distributed by Atlantic & it will be available in stores (that sell CDs &/or videotapes) beginning Tuesday November 23rd. <> I can't give you a list of specific stores, but any CD or video store should be able to at least order it for you if they don't already have it, once its released. If you are having any difficulty purchasing it locally, JMerch at Jewel's website will have it on release day & they will be most happy to help you. Remember, they can easily be contacted when you have any JMerch related question at customerservice@jeweljk.com. <> Yes, I think I saw you in one of the audiences! ;-) I think that answers all home video related questions. That would be alot of money, >and perhaps also the encouragment Jewel might be needing. She >has given us so much, maybe we should give back. Just a thought, >E-mail me or put up a message saying what you think and if you >would be a part of it... I support this idea & your list-owner Mike tells me that many are writing in support of Louise's idea. If there is general interest in getting behind another major list project for the holidays, I think I can help everyone who'd like to participate. I had a good discussion about this idea with Shane Kilcher (Jewel's brother & HGH/Clearwater management) & of course HGH would love to have EDA support like this & we all agree that Jewel would be thrilled by such a gift! So here's a few suggestions that may help get this idea off the ground. I see 2 major areas that would need attention. They are: 1) Collection & tallying of all EDA contributions to HGH 2) Creating a LARGE Christmas card to Jewel from all the EDAs that participate & writing a message to her explaining this "giving back" idea. Then getting this card to her on Christmas. As most of you hopefully know, anyone can make a donation to HGH at their website, but since I think most see this as a great potential "list project", it would be nice to keep track of EDA contribution totals. Mike mentioned that several people have already volunteered to collect the contributions, but I think we can be directly helpful with that. Here's what Shane & I discussed a bit. We thought that maybe we could begin an HGH/EDA project together. A major current focus of HGH is the Clearwater Project. Although they are currently working at improving living conditions at two locations in Mexico & one in Bangla Desh, they want to add a fourth location, possibly in rural Alaska or one of several locations within the U.S. I thought perhaps the EDAs would like to "adopt" this next location. Does this seem like an idea that could fly on the list? I think so & I think it can easily extend past the initial idea of "Jewel's holiday gift", yet begin as that, since it's perfect timing. What we could do to facilitate the ease of contributing would be to set up a mailing address specifically for the HGH/EDA project. Then everyone who wishes to contribute can mail the contribution to HGH/EDA Project, etc & the HGH Staff could keep those contributions seperate for this project & keep a tally on current EDA totals. I can keep an ongoing list of all the names contributing & all those names could be added to Jewel's Christmas Card. We would highly suggest that ONE big card be designed as apposed to doing yet another "book of EDA messages". We'd prefer to see the EDAs designate an EDA team to create the card & write up a thoughtful message to Jewel explaining how you wanted to "give something back" to her in this manner. I'm not trying to trample anyone writing Jewel messages, but thats not the focus of this project, & I think its important to keep such a potentially huge project logistically simple. I can certainly get the list of all EDA contributer names from HGH & get them to the "EDA card design team". So in that way, everyone's name can be included on the card. I'm sure Jewel would be extremely happy to get a gift like this from the EDAs for Christmas & I can make sure she does recieve the EDA card, message & list of names personally. So....what do ya think? Please let me know if this project is indeed what The EDAs would like to pursue. As Louise said, "What if every single EDA send $5(or more) to HGH in a christmas card addressed to Jewel?". I can answer that! If that actually happened, the EDAs would be well on the way to setting up a clean water system that would dramatically improve living conditions for an entire community in thier adopted location. If the EDAs want to pursue this, I'll do whatever I can to help & we'll make it procedurally workable on our end. I'll be watching the list so no need to reply just to me. I'll be chatting with Shane & HGH staff again on Wednesday & would appreciate if a general consensus on this idea could be relayed to them by then. Is that possible? Please discuss ON THE LIST. When I see things like this, it reminds me once again, that the EDAs are amazing! Alan PS. Please visit the HGH & Clearwater websites to educate yourself more about their projects. First of all I'm writing to let you guys know that I think this idea about us sending Jewel some cash and a card is WONDERFUL..and I am all for it..I just need the info :) Anyways now for my good news...WE FOUND A DONOR FOR ROMAN!! :) They did the transplant over last week...he's still at this point in the hospital because his potasssium level is increasing which can lead to a heart attack. So we just need to keep praying. I want to again thank ALL OF YOU who helped and ALL OF YOU who let me know they were praying for him. I truly believe it helped. Just out of curiosity ..were any of you there yesterday at the Hilton? Even though they found a donor for Roman their are still tons of little kids just like him that need transplants so thats what we were doing yesterday there. Anyways ok I am done :) Thanks again for all your help. To: jewel@smoe.org Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hi all, It's pretty obvious many of you support Louise's idea of EDA contributions to HGH as a thanks to Jewel during the holidays. As far as exact procedure on how to send your contribution to HGH, just sit tight. As I mentioned, I'll be discussing next step logistics with Shane & HGH staff for you this Wednesday. I should have the best HGH procedural information for you shortly thereafter. There's no need for any EDAs to collect donations. If the EDAs really want to do this, then HGH will relay easy reliable procedures for you to follow. That way, you'll be contributing directly to HGH/Clearwater & be included on the card & counted toward the EDA contribution total. If The EDAs are going to support this idea, what you can concentrate on NOW is finding amongst yourselves: 1) talented EDAs to design & create the card 2) eloquent EDAs to write the "card message" to Jewel I'd also suggest finding a manager of the card project to be my contact (& to keep track of EDA names for the card, getting them to the designers, etc). And of course actually getting the finished card to us by the "to be determined" deadline, so Jewel can actually recieve it on Christmas. Keeping the EDA momentum going is also going to be a challenge. But first I'd suggest getting a reliable EDA "creative team" together. I can help by communicating between the EDAs & HGH, but I'm honestly too busy to oversee the card aspects (& I wouldn't feel comfortable doing so.). If the EDAs really want to do this project, you must figure out how to cooperate together to accomplish these goals over the next month. So... GO FOR IT! I am known as Mike. Many of you will get more than one copy of this announcement. It is because of a special method I am using to send it, which sends individual emails to digest subscribers. Sorry for any inconvenience. (Soon I hope to have this changed so you get just one email, two at the most) I just wanted to let you know that I am moving the Jewel/Christmas card portion of this discussion to the EDA-Project list, at least for the time being (subscribing information is below). That is why you have seen very few posts on this project since last night. I have held them up in anticipation of this change. (I won't be sending the held up posts on to this or the EDA-Project list, you'll have to re-post, if desired, on the EDA-Project list) I just got off the phone with Alan/MrBB and we discussed this project for quite a while. He and I are both EXTREMELY busy right now, which is THE major reason you have not seen us chime in as usual offering advice and steering things in the right path when they go mildly astray. We just will not be able to take any true leadership role this time, although we have taken some necessary guidance steps now and will help out to a degree in the future when it is deemed necessary. Hopefully, it won't be necessary often, especially if you read our posts carefully AND work with each other to get the job done. :-) Most likely, sometime tomorrow (Thursday) Alan will be posting on this, the Jewel list, what he and the HGH director (Jewel's brother Shane) figure is the best way to handle the donations aspect of this project. I have heard the basics, and I am quite certain it will all work out fine. Please read his post carefully, it may contain some instructions on how to ensure your donations get credited to the EDA/Jewel/HGH/Clearwater Christmas Project. Discussion of THAT aspect (donations) can certainly still continue on the Jewel list. Now, the main reason I am moving the discussion/planning of the Christmas card to Jewel portion of this to the EDA-Project list is two-fold. 1) that list is unmoderated, so you can post to it and your emails will be delivered to the other subscribers of EDA-Project right then and there. This will help immensely in speeding up this project, as the posts won't have to wait for me to get my butt home to screen and approve posts. You will be able to interact with greater efficiency. 2) those on the Jewel list who are not partaking or cannot partake in the planning will not have to have the emails about it filling up their email-boxes. Also, in Alan/MrBB's forthcoming post about the donations, he will give a strong recommendation concerning this Christmas card project. Please read his post carefully and understand what he is conveying. He works for Jewel and knows what is best here. OK....how to subscribe to this EDA-Project list...... it is offered in two versions.....regular (you get ALL the posts individually), and a digest version (you get about 20 posts all rolled into one large post). I recommend you subscribe to both if you plan on being active in this. The digest will serve as an easy way to archive this discussion, as you just have to save those digests for reference, rather than all the individual emails. ** To subscribe to the regular version, send the following two-line command in the body of an email to majordomo@smoe.org subscribe eda-project end ** To subscribe to the digest version, send the following two-line command in the body of an email to majordomo@smoe.org subscribe eda-project-digest end ** To subscribe to the BOTH versions, either send both emails above or send the following three-line command in the body of an email to majordomo@smoe.org subscribe eda-project subscribe eda-project-digest end Please note, this list will NOT be active for discussion until sometime on Friday. This is to give folks time to read THIS email and subscribe if they wish. This project will get off on the right foot best if most of the folks interested in partaking are already subscribed before the discussion begins. I will post to the EDA-Project list when I activate it, so you will know when it is alright to start posting/discussing etc. Gosh.....I hope I didn't forget anything....I have that "I left the stove on when I left the house" kind of feeling........ So much so that the Alaskan singer is all excited about her first Christmas album, Joy: A Holiday Collection which was released last Tuesday. The album is packed with all-time favourites like Joy to the World, Silent Night and Winter Wonderland. "Christmas has always been a beautiful holiday," said the 25-year-old singer-songwriter in a telephone interview with Life! from New York where she is touring this week. "To me, it's all about the spirit of giving, joy and happiness. And as a singer, I've always wanted to do a Christmas album." She recorded the album within three days in July. "I picked out all the carols in the album myself. They are actually my personal favourites. That's why I enjoyed doing the album. It was fun and there was no pressure at all." Although it was only about 8.30 pm in New York, she sounded exhausted. "I've been having interviews for the past four hours," she explained, her voice soft and high-pitched. Still, she managed to remain cheery throughout the 10-minute interview, sharing with Life! the tidbits about her past Christmases. "As a kid, it had always been about presents. But it's more than that when you grow up. Now I'm just grateful that I get to spend the holiday with my friends and family." Born Jewel Kilcher, the talented chanteuse grew up in Homer, Alaska on a 323-ha homestead where her family led a simple life. They had no TV or running water and as a child, Jewel often helped to tend to the horses they raised. Singing has always been part of her life. By the tender age of six, she was already performing with her parents who were a singer-songwriter duo. And when her folks divorced when she was eight, she continued to sing with her father in various pubs in their hometown. After high school, she left for San Diego where she honed her singing skills and made slowly a name for herself by doing the pub circuit there. In 1994, her big break finally came with a contract offer from Atlantic Records. But even with two albums -POY (1995) and Spirit (1998) - which sold more than 17 million copies, she has not forgotten her humble roots. "I grew up in a poor family and I've always been taught to make gifts rather than buy them." This explains why Jewel who was here in April for a gig at the Harbour Pavilion, still creates Christmas gifts for her close friends and family. "These gifts cane be anything," she quipped. "Sometimes, I'll write a book or just make little CDs of my own songs to give away as gifts. This way, the presents are more personal and meaningful as there'd be more of me in them." Last year, she was invited to celebrate Christmas in the Vatican City. "The experience was great and I felt honoured to sing for the Pope.: And where will she celebrate Christmas this year? "I don't know yet. I guess wherever I am, or at home with my family." ----------------------- Meanwhile, a little gripe... I saw Alex Oudshoorn's post today, and realized "Hey, Jewel will be on TV in less than an hour!!" :-) I wanted to tape it, but Dad hadn't fixed the video recorder's remote yet (he's going to hear from me tonight....). Anyway, the guy from Talking Movies (Tony somebody?? Can't remember...) had the interview with Jewel, which was longer than I thought it would be. He asked questions like what it was like for her to see herself on the silver screen, why she decided to act (it's something she always wanted to do), if she'll act again (definitely! It's a tremendous learning experience). Actually intelligent questions, unlike some talk show hosts I know....:-þ I liked the way Jewel answered the questions. The last time I saw her on TV was during "10 of the Best" on VH1, and she really looked as if she didn't want to be there....(when I saw the "10 best" videos they played I understood why she didn't want to be there....:-þ). This interview was quite in contrast with that. At the end they played a short extract from WSIT, which looked really nice. And I didn't see a single bit of BLUE!! Wow...:o) Just before the interview they showed small clip from "Jupiter" and also showed a clip from RWTD (naturally). Anyway, I'm glad I could catch that bit! To: jewel@smoe.org Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Greetings all, I have a lot of info here in regards to the current EDA Project, so please read it all carefully so this huge project can flow relatively smoothly & accomplish something great within the next month. :-) Shane (HGH management & Jewel's brother) Kilcher & I have discussed the EDA "Giving Back To Jewel" idea & we're here to help you in a number of ways with this, as well as make a few suggestions. After you've read this post, I think you'll be ready to make this great idea fly! First, I just want to briefly give you some advice regarding the "card idea" aspects of this project. Then I'll explain exactly how best to make your HGH/Clearwater donations & how we're going to keep track of EVERY EDA donation (both names & totals). I know your list owner is in the process of setting up a EDA-Project list so a "card design team" can take charge of that work-intensive aspect of this project. (You should already have his instructions to join the project list if you want to participate in that.) Before that's underway, I have a few suggestions regarding the card. I highly recommend that ONE big card with ONE eloquent message be designed as opposed to doing another "book of EDA messages", sending many cards, etc. HGH or I cannot deliver piles of EDA messages/cards to Jewel. It's preferred that EDAs designate an EDA team to create ONE card & write an eloquent message to Jewel explaining how you wanted to "give something back" to her in this manner. I'm not trying to discourage anyone writing Jewel messages, (& of course anyone can do that at the PO Box & website) but that's not the focus of this generous project, & I think its important to keep such a huge project logistically simple. If individual cards is the preferred method, EDAs will have to use the PO Box listed in Jewel's CDs. This is totally up to you, but in my opinion, ONE big card with a well written message to Jewel from the EDAs (hand delivered by Lenedra) will have a much bigger impact than hundreds of cards through regular channels. You can always do what you want in addition to the "EDA Card", so please try to work together on that. You'll have about a month to have the card in my hands if you want Lenedra to give it to Jewel on Christmas. If the EDAs would like us to deliver the card, it must be in my hands no later than Saturday, December 18th. If you decide to do it this way, I'll make arrangements with the card team on getting it to me. That's my last words on the card. That aspect is now completely in the hands of the EDAs who join the project list. OK. On to the actual procedure to follow, if you'd like to participate in the EDA "Giving Back To Jewel" HGH project AND have your name listed on the "EDA Donation List" to be included with (or on) the EDA card given to Jewel. First, I want to stress that anyone can donate ANY amount they feel comfortable with. It needn't be five dollars. If you prefer to send more, of course your donation will be welcome. Likewise, if you want to send less, that is very welcome! You'll be able to contribute directly to HGH/Clearwater either by mail or through the HGH website. You can determine what is most convenient for you. Here are the exact procedures to follow to be counted in the ongoing EDA total. PLEASE, follow these instructions carefully. If you do, we'll be able to periodically update you on how much the EDAs have contributed & provide the "card team" with an accurate list of all EDAs who participated. #1-For those who prefer mailing their contribution: You can send a check or money order. (Cash being sent through the mail is not recommended, but you can do it.) Please make any checks or money orders payable to: Higher Ground/Clearwater (Please DO NOT make them out to HGH, EDA Project, Jewel, or anything else!) Please write "EDA" in the memo line & in the mailing address as follows. Mail it directly to HGH at: Higher Ground For Humanity Attention: EDA PMB #302 300 CVD #108A Carlsbad, CA 92008 USA #2 For those who prefer the ease of using a credit card for their contribution: Go to the HGH Website at: http://www.highergroundhumanity.org. At the site is a very simple form so that you can donate with a credit card very easily. Increments of $1, $5, $10, etc are already in a pop-up menu for your convenience. This is also the recommended procedure for all international EDAs wishing to participate. The cool thing about international EDAs using a credit card is that once you choose your amount, it automatically converts your withdrawal at the current exchange rate! Great, huh? If you don't have a credit card, perhaps an EDA (with a credit card) in your country can help you. IMPORTANT: The one thing to remember if you choose to use a credit card on the website form, is to please write "EDA" in addition to your name in the "name" field of the form. Please don't forget this one little thing! The HGH staff processing credit card donations know to look for "EDA" in the name field. If you follow these instructions, your donation will be added to the EDA total & to the list of names we forward to the card design team. We'd love to see this become an ongoing project & to eventually have EDAs contributing real "hands on" help with new Clearwater Project locations. For now, we'll continue to keep an ongoing total running for all EDAs who follow the above procedures & depending on how much money is raised, perhaps the EDAs can adopt a specific location. We'll keep all that open for later discussion & let you concentrate on this particular project for now. Needless to say, everyone on the J-Team, at HGH & Clearwater thank you for being such thoughtful fans. You are amazing! Also, again a big thanks to Louise Tamblyn for suggesting this idea. This project shows, once again, that the EDAs really get Jewel's message of helping others. That is unquestionably the gift she cherishes most! Cheers! Alan PS. I was reading the December issue of Seventeen magazine and they have their review of Ride With The Devil! Very short.... Rating: "Take it or Leave it" In this bloody but beautifully rendered war drama, the battlefield is the Kansas--Missouri border during the Civil War. Childhoood friends Jake Roedel (Tobey Maguire) and Jack Bull Chiles (Skeet Ulrich) join in a local guerrilla group making raids on Unioin soldiers. As winter approaches, they hide in a hillside dugout, attended by beauitiful widow, Sue Lee Shelley (Jewel, in her movie debut), but come spring, their lives change forever. Although director Ang Lee (The Ice Storm) briliantly captures a little-known side to this war, the slow-paced story is anticlimactic. Even Jewel's game attempt at acting can't keep the white flag from being raised. That's it! Hope you errr...liked it! I don't particularly but it's another's opinion! Jewel appears on the cover of the latest BMG Music Service magazine. Unfortunately this is one of those things you can only get if you are a current BMG member and your music type is Pop/Rock, but if you aren't a member, you should find a friend who will give you their cover. There's a very nice black and white picture of Jewel similar to the one on the "We are loved beyond our capacity to comprehend" poster, only she's looking at the camera, not to the left of it. There's also a nice little review, which I've included below. *No Author is mentioned* Jewel- Spirit "An extraordinary vocalist....captures moments big and small, from a soaring falsetto to a hushed whisper.... Warm, dense and graceful, this is pop music at its most organic....a rewarding bit of creative expance." -MTV By now, the extraordinary story of Jewel Kilcher's ascension from living-out-of-her-van California troubadour, to multi-platinum industry icon has entered the realm of myth. What's often lost in the threads of her inspiring tale of perseverance is the fact that the Utah-born, Alaska-bred, singer/guitar/slinger has evolved into one of today's finest songwriters, a truth that's evident on her most recent outing, "Spirit." A lesson in folk-rock savvy from beginning to end, Jewel's sophmore set exhibits musical growth while affirming her command of the contemporary pop dialect. Throughout "Spirit," Jewel adroitly plays her strengths, namely her cooing, multi-octave voice, her boundless compassion, and her whimsical outlook. Self-reflective numbers like "Jupiter," "Kiss the Flame," and "Enter From the East" are delivered with the sort of irresistible, pie-eyed capriciousness as her breakout 1995 hit, "You Were Meant For Me." On the other hand, the solo-acoustic "Fat Boy," the uplifting "Life Uncommon," and the "hidden" track "This Little Bird" (with vocals from Jewel's mother Nedra Carroll) are broader in scope, less introspective and more globally reflective. Sweetness and light aside, Jewel proves that when the occasion is called for -as on the hit "Hands"- she can rock solely for the sake of rocking. On the almost surly "Innocence Maintained," the typically sweet chanteuse plays a tougher, more gritty role, a pleasantly sharp contrast to the bulk of her songbook. Delivered with a throaty growl that would likely put a smile on Melissa Etheridge's face, "Down So Long" is probably Jewel's meatiest three-plus minutes to date. On her debut, "Pieces of You," Jewel introduced herself to the world as a wholesome yet sexy gamine; hard to resist, impossible not to love. On "Spirit," those traits still remain, but she had added to the picture with the kind of qualities- diversity, fire, smarts- that are the earmarks of long-term superstardom. That's the end of the review. BMG also now has "A Night Without Armor" for sale. Rachel :P "That's when suddenly everything fades or falls away. 'Cause the chains that once held us are only the chains which we've made." -"Deep Water" by Jewel From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Mon Nov 15 19:45:51 1999 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id TAA16000 for jewel-news-outgoing; Mon, 15 Nov 1999 19:45:17 -0500 (EST) Message-Id: <199911160045.TAA16000@smoe.org> Date: Sun, 14 Nov 1999 21:02:44 -0500 From: Mike Connell To: jewel-news@smoe.org Subject: Jewel-News: * NEW official Ride WIth The Devil web site Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hi folks :-) Many of you likely knew of the Ride With The Devil website at http://www.universalpictures.com/ridewiththedevil/ which hasn't changed in ages. If you DO type in the address for the site instead of clicking on the link or cut & pasting, whatever you do PLEASE don't forget the hyphens. Its about the movie. There was part in the magazine and part on-line this is the part online.... There is more in the magazine. The issue with Christina Aquilera on the cover In the spring of '98, 16-year-old Katie Hosack's diary got very interesting. That's when her family's Black River Ranch in La Cygne, Kansas, played host to Ride with the Devil, a Civil War epic starring Tobey Maguire, Skeet Ulrich and Jewel. Here are excerpts from her diary. Wednesday, May 27, 1998: Dad, Nick (my 11-year-old brother) and I went to our farm, Black River Ranch, to see the sites today. There were a few men there working. They are building wooden platforms to put tents on because "Hollywood doesn't like to rough it." I met several equipment coordinators.... We showed them all where the big lake is located, [and] they're all excited about going fishing. They told us they don't get to fish much in California. I was pretty amused by the whole thing (imagine being thrilled over a lake!). Friday, June 5, 1998: Skeet Ulrich came over and stood by me. I felt myself turn red, and I felt really hot. If he only knew how many posters I have of him in my room. He started putting on a different jacket. He had his arms outstretched and he accidentally hit me. As he looked at me and said, "Excuse me, I'm really sorry about that," all I could say was, "That's okay." Wednesday, June 10, 1998: Dad decided to ride Tequila [one of our horses] down to the set. When I got there, the actor who plays Pitt Mackeson came over and grabbed my hand and said, "I saw you riding earlier today, you were excellent. I'm Johnny." Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, an actor out of Ireland, I later found out. When I told him that I was Katie Hosack, he hugged me and said, "This is your land?!?!" Such a nice guy. And *swoon* I've been hugged by a movie star! Friday, June 12, 1998: Today was the best day yet on the ranch!!! Almost a dozen of my friends and family joined us for lunch. We got to pick between Cornish game hen and steak. Soon the actors started coming in. When Jonathan Brandis came, [my friend] Will went crazy. Jonathan had been like his role model or something ever since he did SeaQuest DSV. So I said, "Jonathan, I've got some friends I'd like you to meet." He said, "Hey Katie, how are we today?" and put his arm around me. Then we spotted Jewel. When I first saw her, I thought she was her double. She told us that people come up to her all the time and say, "Wow, you look just like Jewel." She said she just responds, "Yeah, I've been told that." Wednesday, June 17, 1998: Johnny came over and wanted to ride Dakota [one of our horses], so I let him. He took him around a couple of times in a canter and then gave him back to me. As he handed me the reins, he kissed my hand. I was shocked, but tried really hard not to let it show. Then he said, "Thank you very much," and kissed me on the cheek. I told him that he should come riding on the ranch sometime, to which he responded that he would love that, and would I give him my number? I said that I would and he kissed me on the lips and left. It wasn't a big kiss or anything, and I have forced myself to put it off as an "Irish tradition." Yes, that's what I had to tell Dad that it was, just a common ritual that the Irish perform when they are extremely grateful. The price of these collector ornaments is $24.95 and they come with a very cool bonus! For every ornament purchased, we will include a FREE "Joy" VIDEO of Jewel performing her new album LIVE at "Sessions At West 54th Street" in NYC with Arif Marden conducting. Thats right, the same "Sessions" show that the EDAs attended back in September. This video will NOT be sold in stores & the only place you can get it is from us FREE with any ornament purchase or from PBS during their holiday pledge drives. Thats the only way to get the official released version of the video in master pre-broadcast Hi Fi Stereo quality. The video will not be sold seperately & should not be confused with Jewel's new home video "Jewel: A Life Uncommon". It's totally different & is the complete one hour "Sessions At West 54th Street" PBS Christmas Special featuring Jewel, choir, small orchestra & an EDA audience. Visit Jewel's website store. For your suggestions to the message please send them to Phillip Jacques at mastapj@pacbell.net For the actual design of the card and graphics please send them to Chris Lang at, mastapj@pacbell.net. Hello all angles out there. Right now we are starting to get things together and have a few points that we are going to decide on they are: 1. Do we want the card on normal or recycled paper? 2. Do we want the card in the shape of angel wings? 3. Do we want a picture of Jewel on the front? 4. Do we want glitter and/or feathers on the front, or just a picture? 5. Do we want a quote on the front? 6. Do we want the card handmade, or made on a computer? 7. Do we want to use organic inks, or normal materials? 8. How big do we want the card to be? Those are the Ideas we have so far. Also we have had one drawing submitted so far and it is available to view at this website: http://members.limitless.org/~taan/pics/cardidea.jpg We all really like that and are still searching for others as well. I got a smile out of it, and I hope you do, too! ----- Screen Gem: Jewel shines in her movie debut First-time actress Jewel was at a bit of a disadvantage while filming this month's Civil War drama "Ride With the Devil," in which she plays a Southern widow who finds love again. "Ang [Lee, the director] kept saying, 'Hit your mark,'" she says. "I didn't know what he meant. I thought it was some emotional thing. He finally explained that it was an actual mark on the ground. I was like, '*Ohhhh*.'" But co-stars Tobey Maguire and Skeet Ulrich didn't hold it against the singer. They were too busy trying to stay on their horses, while Jewel, who practically grew up on a horse, was stuck riding a mule. "I can't show my face around my father now," she says. ----- Also, if you're interested in the picture, it should be up at http://members.limitless.org/~taan/photos/US-1299.jpg -- provided my server's working, that is... :) Have a wonderful Thursday, everyone! - --Jess From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Fri Nov 19 17:02:17 1999 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id RAA26643 for jewel-news-outgoing; Fri, 19 Nov 1999 17:01:20 -0500 (EST) Message-Id: <199911192201.RAA26643@smoe.org> From: alan@jeweljk.com Date: Wed, 17 Nov 1999 18:37:16 EST Subject: Jewel-News: MrBB-Radio Station Concerts/1999 Ornament status To: jewel@smoe.org Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hi all, Many have written me lately about the "multi-artist holiday concerts" that Jewel will be performing at, in conjunction with various radio stations, next month. Thursday, Dec 16: THE BEAT 107.5 FM Christmas Concert, Schnitzer Auditorium, Portland, OR (Barenaked Ladies & Jude are on this bill in addition to Steve Poltz) Friday, Dec 17: STAR 100.7 FM Jingle Ball Cox Arena, San Diego State University, San Diego, CA (Mellissa Etheridge & Lou Bega are on this bill in addition to Steve Poltz) Thats all I know about these holiday gigs. Check locally & on Jewel's website calendar as more info becomes available. Now, onto the status of the JMerch "Jewel Ornament/Live Joy Album Video" website special. These are flying! You'll need Shockwave Flash to view it (they'll have a link if you don't have it).. It takes a while to load, but it looks really good.. There's production notes, cast & crew bios (with a fairly outdated, pre-Joy Jewel write-up, the Quicktime trailer, postcards, registration (not sure what for.. maybe they'll give out free stuff.. i'll see.. i signed up..), and more.. a few of the links don't work yet (movie stills, music, desktop themes, etc.), but i guess you can get the majority of the content.. Rolling Stone has a review of the article in the lastest issue with Christina Ricci on the cover.. It says: "RIDE WITH THE DEVIL gives pop star Jewel, 25, a chance to show her stuff as an actress, in a Civil War film directed by Ang Lee (The Ice Storm, Sense And Sensibility). Wisely, she takes a supporting role--no Joan of Arc histrionics **referring to the previous review of The Messenger** for her--and acquits herself creditably as Sue Lee Shelley, a pregnant war widow who falls in love with two pro-South bushwackers, Jack Bull Chiles (Skeet Ulrich) and Jake Roedel (Tobey Maguire). Set in 1862 on the Kansas-Missouri border, the film concern young Americans on the fringe of the war who must decide whether to side with the rebels or the Union. Jeffrey Wright delivers the film's most powerful performance as Daniel Holt, a black man who finds himself allied with the pro-slavery forces. Lee, born in Taiwan, has always been concerned with social upheaval, be it on a small or grand scale. And working with screenwriter James Schamus, he transfers Daniel Woodrell's book Woe To Live On into a meditation on the racial and class conflicts at the heart of the American character. Despite the ravage sequence depicting the Lawrence massacre, led by Quantrill (John Ales), at the abolitionist stronghold in Kansas, Lee's film--stunningly shot by the great Frederick Elmes--may prove too thoughtful for the action crowd. Still, don't discount Lee's keen eye for the telling detail. My hunch is his film, lapses and all, will endure. It also has a small still from the film with Jewel sitting down. She is exploring playing Alaska next Spring and regrets disappointing her fans and friends. Ticket holders can receive a refund at the place of purchase. The same applies to Fairbanks, however tickets never went on sale for that show. Now, onto some good news. "Ride With The Devil" opens next Wednesday in Los Angeles & NYC. Check local listings for theaters. The soundtrack CD includes the WSIT remix & is out Tuesday. There's also a nice full page photo of Jewel (as Sue Lee Shelly) in the CD booklet. Jewel will be on David Letterman next Thursday night & does an outdoor miniconcert for The Today Show on Friday morning, where she'll perform 3 or 4 songs from her new album. Following her performance at The Today Show next Friday, (Nov 26th,) Jewel will be doing an In-Store CD signing at Coconuts in New York City (at 51st St. & 6th Ave). I'll let you know what time early next week. The "Sessions At 54th Street" special will begin airing on many PBS stations around the country NEXT weekend. Check your local PBS listings or call your state's PBS station for accurate scheduling. I know in some areas, this is being put on hold for PBS pledge drives & in some areas it'll be shown on Christmas night instead (that applies to WGBY in Massachusetts which we carry here.) It will be on PBS stations Friday the 26th & Saturday the 27th in some areas, though. Also, a NEW version of the official Jewel Website in coming soon. We have a lot of new ideas & a great team working away on it. In the meantime, a lot of the "basic content" has been recently updated. We recently revamped the main bio (which will soon be expanded into a new feature) & all the Headlines & Rumor sections have been updated. The Jewel Store is also dramatically improved for much easier navigation. If you haven't been to these features in a while, its a good way to catch up on everything going on. I also updated the calendar minutes ago. Have a look at www.jeweljk.com. Also, thanks for all your "HGH EDA Project" donations! I'll try to post status on EDA contributions early next week. I think that about covers it. A very busy week next week..... so I'm off to enjoy the weekend! Have a great weekend yourself! Apparently Jewel's had even more reason to smile lately -- she's finally taking some long overdue time off with her boyfriend, Ty Murray. so, there you go...sorry if you guys new about this already. The articles really gave me a new depth of respect for her, and I learned a lot (a rarity in magazine articles), so I decided to type them up for y'all. In the first (for the Women Of The Year), the text is on top of a full-page new picture of her playing acoustic guitar on stage with a miniskirt on. Here's what it says: Jewel Musical Missionary "She's funneling 40 percent of her total income to help the needy." Singer. Songwriter. Actress. It's hard to imagine a multi-faceted creative force (at all of age 25) finding energy for more. Jewel does--flush from the success of her four million-selling sophomore CD, Spirit, and fresh off her acting debut as a Civil War bride in Ang Lee's Ride With the Devil. Last January, Jewel and her mother, Nedra, launched Higher Ground For Humanity (HGH) to fund health clinics and safe drinking water projects in Third World countries. "To have something to work for...that's a great thing," says Jewel, who donates 30 percent of her income to HGH. Her generosity may spring from her hardscrabble youth. Raised on an 800-acre Alaskan homestead, she struggled with kidney problems, dyslexia and her parents' divorce. At 18, Jewel lived in a VW bus in San Diego, subsisting on peanut butter and songwriting, when Atlantic Records scouts caught her gig at a local coffeehouse. By 1995, she had a debut CD (Pieces of You), which has sold 11 million copies. Then in 1998 came her first book (remarkably, it became a best-seller), revealing yet another facet: Jewel as poet. The second article is for Jewel, about the cover story. It has a full page close close-up of her similar to the cover (which is awesome. you can see it at www.glamour.com.) She's got new wheels: Jewel no longer drives her cherished VW van--her mom bought her a red Jeep Cherokee for her birthday. All strummed out: Jewel took opera classes in high school, but didn't discover her true passion--playing guitar--until 1989. At peace with teeth: "As a kid I desperately wanted my teeth done, but we just never had the money. Then you grow up and get used to it. And the idea of wearing braces now is absurd. I don't care if my teeth are straight or fixed or whatever." (Main Article) At the Four Season Hotel in Toronto on a gorgeous early autumn day, the Jewel star-making machinery is cranking. Publicists, reporters, photographers, makeup artists, hairdressers and camera crews mill about, all needing a piece of Jewel. The 25-year-old Alaskan folk rocked has come to the glitzy Toronto International Film Festival for the North American premiere of Ride With the Devil, the Civil War saga directed by Ang Lee (The Ice Storm), in which she makes her big-screen debut (the film opens nationwide this December). And today, three floors of the hotel have been turned into Jewel central. Escaping the commotion, Jewel sits cross-legged on the floor in a corner, softly strumming her guitar. Her wispy blond hair framing her serene face, she looks more like a college freshman hanging out in her dorm hallway than a movie/rock star. "If I can get five minutes by myself in between interviews, well, you know, I have to take it," she says. Time is a precious commodity for Jewel these days. Her Christmas album, Joy: A Holiday Collection, has just been released, and she's also finishing a book of essays and sketches (she received a huge $2 million advance to write the follow-up to her best-selling book of poetry, A Night Without Armor). And when she's not touring in support of her quadruple-platinum album, Spirit, or helping to run her charitable foundation, Higher Ground for Humanity (HGH), she's sneaking off to her boyfriend's ranch in Texas to practice roping and branding cattle (more on the cowboy later). Hectic as her life is, she's accustomed to the pace (although, she admits, she'd like to spend more time at her new home in Rancho Santa Fe, just north of San Diego). After all, it's been this fast since 1995, when Atlantic Records put out her first album, Pieces of You. Jewel toured "mercilessly" (her word) nationwide to support the record, doing nearly 500 shows in the year after its release. Just as her singing success was peaking, she was linked romantically to Hollywood bad boy Sean Penn, which solidified her celebrity while Pieces of You was on its way to becoming a record-industry phenomenon: It sold 11 million copies. Jewel sat down with Glamour in Toronto to take stock of her success, discuss her budding acting career and talk (just a little) about the new man in her life. Right now, she's sipping tea at a table in an empty ballroom in the hotel, wearing a rumpled, inside-out blue T-shirt and gray sweatpants. "People always ask me, 'Why do you work so hard?'" she says. "Well, after Pieces of You came out, I knew I had one shot, and it was up to me, period, to break myself [into the business]. It was up to me to get fans. I mean, I HAD to work this hard." She knew from the start of her career, at age 18, that she wanted to make more than music, so she wisely signed with a talent agency that also had film and literary departments. "Why wouldn't you want to do more than one thing?" she asks, pouring more tea. "Creativity is creativity. It's just a matter of which arm you want to use, your singing arm or your acting arm or your writing arm, whatever." After her music career took off, Jewel branched out, following the plan she'd set years before. "When Ang's movie came up, it was perfect timing for me," she says. Lee knew little about Jewel ("I'm too old," joked the 42-year-old director), but when his casting director suggested her, he immediately saw her in the role of Sue Lee, a young widow whose life is shattered by the Civil War. "She had a period upbringing and a period look. She's even got period teeth," Lee says, referring to Jewel's famously crooked smile. It was this small imperfection, in part, that made her perfect for the role. Also contributing to her allure, says Lee, was her earthy toughness--a side of Jewel that not many people are familiar with. "My dad's a cowboy," explains the singer. "I go with him to rodeos when I'm off the road, and it's like I'm not famous. It's really nice." In fact, Jewel appears to have a thing for cowboys. Last year she went out with soap-star-turned-rodeo-star Chris Douglas, 30. And it was at a Colorado rodeo earlier this year that Jewel met her current beau, 30-year-old Ty Murray, a seven-time World Champion All-Around Cowboy (he's skilled at many rodeo events, especially bareback and bull riding--hence the term "all-around") and the youngest cowboy millionaire ever. While both are super-busy with their careers, they travel with each other when possible. "The day before I got to this film festival, we were blacklegging, castrating, dehorning, eartagging, and I got to rope for the first time," she says, laughing. "It was a lot of fun." Her wrangling experience also gave her an edge that Lee found irresistible. "The first time I say her," Lee says, "I saw the power of a woman, that feminine sexual power and strength that she has. She is not saccharin--she can hold her own as the only woman in a war movie. And she has a sincerity that comes across on the screen." Rugged Beginnings The story of Jewel's rural Alaskan childhood has been told so often that it sounds like folklore--as if she were "raised by wolves," Jewel jokes. Actually, she was raised by hippie/artist/musicians who saw themselves as the last pioneers. Not long after Jewel was born in Utah, on May 23, 1974, ranch owners Atz Kilter and Nedra Carroll moved their family to an 800-acre homestead near Anchorage in Homer, Alaska. There, they brought up Jewel and her two brothers, Atz Jr. and Shane (she's the middle child), in a cabin without electricity or running water. When Jewel was eight, her parent divorced and her mom moved to Anchorage; all three kids stayed in Homer with their father. When Atz--also a folk musician in addition to his other talents--played in local bars, Jewel tagged along. As a high school sophomore, she won a scholarship to the prestigious Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan, where she spent two years studying opera, music, drama and sculpture, and modeled for a sculpture class to make money. Her voluptuous beauty may have made the sculptors happy, but it made her feel like an outsider at the school. "Even though I was raised on a homestead, I was aware of weight [issues]," she says. "But I was lucky to have another type of role model--real earthy, hippie, round women. Then I went to Interlochen, where a lot of the girls were dance majors and everybody was bulimic. I mean, after lunch, you'd hear all the toilets flush!" After graduating, she moved to San Diego to be with her mother. She worked as a waitress, and when money got tight, she and her mom moved into their vans, often parking side-by-side at night. Jewel's unencumbered van existence allowed her to concentrate on what she really wanted in life, and she decided she would make two things: music and a difference in people's lives. The music part was easy. She got a Thursday-night gig at San Diego's Innerchange coffeehouse, and by late 1993, she was playing her songs to packed houses and adoring fans. The record industry got wind of a fresh young talent in San Diego and made the trip to check her out. Atlantic Records signed her and she was on her way, with her mother, Nedra, by her side as her comanager and, since 1998, her sole manager. The fulfill the second part of her dream, Jewel is giving 40 percent of her income to Higher Ground for Humanity, the nonprofit foundation she started one year ago with her mother, which focuses on education, alternative health and healing, and placing water filter systems in underdeveloped areas. If not for the foundation, Jewel says, "I think I would have quit [working] this year. I had too hard a time, I was too tired, and I find the constant beauty-queen-pageant, running-for-cheerleader-captain stuff about pop and rock exhausting. You're always competing to be The Girl. It's like dragging high school out for the rest of your life. God, it's absurd." But her obligations to HGH stopped her from quitting, she says. "My mom and I are partners--I have my job and she has her job. She's a brilliant businesswoman, she's amazing at setting up all that. And my job is to tour, gain capital, be creative and be happy." These days, Jewel finds happiness at her eclectically styled home in San Diego, which she shares with Nedra. "I am literally home maybe two weeks a year," explains Jewel, who, following the film festival, flew to her home to do more work on her book. "So if you want to know where my favorite place to vacation is, it wouldn't be Tahiti or the Caribbean. It would be in my own bed." Scott Evans AOL, Yahoo! Superstar folksinger Jewel makes her film debut in the Civil War epic Ride With The Devil on the back of a mule. She is the same folkie singer-songwriter and backwoods poet who grew up calf-roping and herding animals from horseback on an 800-acre cattle ranch in the Alaskan hinterland. More than anyone else in the movie -- including co-stars Skeet Ulrich, Tobey Maguire and Jeffrey Wright -- Jewel Kilcher is at home on a horse. Especially when it's some magnificent steed thundering across a grassy meadow, kicking up dirt from its hooves, defying gravity. But the first glimpse you get of her in Ride With The Devil is a long shot in a bleak, early-winter scene. Playing a Southern belle on a mission of mercy to guerrilla fighters hiding out in the woods, Jewel is a blonde apparition in petticoats. Astride her plodding mule, she moves toward us with glacial speed. By the time she gets close enough to recognize as Jewel -- the Jewel -- all the romance is gone. But the men in the movie have stallions that catch the wind. "I can't show my face to my father," Jewel has joked about the indignity of her debut on the mule. Her father is Atz Kilcher, a former social worker and folksinger who runs the ranch near Homer in south Alaska. Her mother is Nedra Carroll, another singer, who performed as a duo with Atz and now serves as Jewel's manager. Jewel, of course, will get over it. So will her horse-crazy father. Her acting debut was too important to her to worry about image. "This was a dream," she says in an interview about Ride With The Devil. Nothing in her voice or eyes evokes even a droplet of cynicism. "It doesn't get any better. It's the perfect beginning." The dream is a decade old. "When I was in school, I had to take drama, but I had to drop out because I had too many majors." When she made her debut in music and shopped for a talent agency in Hollywood, she insisted on finding someone who also would look after her interests in acting. So, when Ride made its world premiere at Toronto's filmfest in September, Jewel had her day. On Friday, the stakes go higher. The film is being released in Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal and selected U.S. cities with visions of Oscar nominations dancing in distributors' heads -- especially for the film and for the male leads. In the case of Jewel, the surprise is that she makes the transition from music to acting look so effortless on screen. The truth is that she was scared, even "horrified" and "terrified" by how much she did not know, despite tutoring from director Ang Lee, the Taiwanese filmmaker who has scored two artistic triumphs (The Ice Storm and Sense And Sensibility). She threw herself at his mercy. "It's not that I had a lot of faith in myself," Jewel concedes, "but I had a lot of faith in him." At another point in the conversation, Jewel picks up on the same 'love-thy-director' mantra: "I always trusted Ang Lee. He's a brilliant artist. He's very insightful. He's very smart. And, if he thought I could do it, then ..." Jewel was on set for three months. "It did get easier," she says. "The first two weeks were the hardest. But it took at least the first month to start feeling like I was getting my grounding, like I was pulling my own weight. "But it's not like I watched the film and went: 'I sure did that right!' I never reached a point where I went: 'Yeah, I'm confident.' It was never like that." Jewel fears failure as an actress. The pressure is on, especially after her meteoric rise in music. Her debut album, Pieces Of You, which she recorded at age 19, sold an astonishing 10 million copies. Her follow up, Spirit, did not sell as well, yet still made the charts. Jewel has a third release ready, Joy: A Holiday Collection of Christmas songs, spirituals and a new version of her own Hands. In acting, she still feels incredibly vulnerable. "It's funny," she says. "In music, if I fail, it's just me. I fail. It's my life. It's my job. If I give a bad performance, it's on me. I take the risk and, if I fail, I take the responsibility. "In film, it's a whole family of people you not only respect but you really want to please. The most terrifying thing for me (on Ride With The Devil) was: 'What if I could not hold my own?' And it's a lot to hold your own with these guys (she is referring especially to Ulrich, Maguire and Wright) because they're the best. It definitely inspires you. You just keep your head down and try as hard as you can." What Jewel did not need coaching on is her character's earthy sexuality. Her Southern belle is a woman who gets caught up in a torrid affair, first with Ulrich's dashing guerrilla fighter Jack Bull Chiles, the son of a plantation owner, then with Maguire's more cerebral, sensitive character, Jake Roedel, a German immigrant farmer's son. "Jack Bull was a passionate, romantic thing for her," Jewel says, grinning and flirting her way through the interview dressed in baggy pants and sweat shirt, looking every bit the anti-star who still knows she has the charisma. Even Lee told Jewel that "I had brought a strong womanhood to the film." She exudes passion. "I was raised in the country in Alaska. The women I was raised around were womanly. They weren't men. "I was raised in a real voluptuous environment and I definitely think this was part of this script, a different kind of femininity, a more earthy, strong, feminine presence without it being a maleness, you know what I mean? I think when you're raised on the land, you're given a certain awareness of your sexuality -- a real fertile, real earthy kind of thing." Jewel facts INTERESTS: Music, poetry, dance, writing and acting. CREDITS: Three albums: Pieces Of You, Spirit and her new Christmas release. A book of naive poetry, the much-lampooned A Night Without Armor. HER ACTING DEBUT: "I wanted to do a film desperately and I wanted to break from music." Mike :-) Spirit, Jewel's first new album since 1995's Atlantic debut, Pieces of You, reverberates with passion and poignancy. Throughout the record, the strength of her lyrics and the confidence of her music reflect Jewel's growth and development as a songwriter. "This album represents the movement toward spirit in my life and in the world," she says. "My first album is a time capsule of where I was at nineteen. After performing those early songs for the past five years, I'm excited to share more recent work." The album features thirteen new songs, some tender acoustic folk ballads, others richly textured pop. All, however, give life to the theme of spirit via Jewel's singular, magical voice. "Spirit," she says, "is the force within and around us that moves us to the highest expression of our nature as human beings." Spirit also opens new windows into our shared humanity. Songs such as "Hands," "Deep Water," and "Life Uncommon" reveal the songwriter's faith in each individual's ability to make a difference, as well as the need for spirit to enrich our lives. "Barcelona" chronicles Jewel's own struggle toward self-love, while "Kiss The Flame" and "Innocence Maintained" reflect the songwriter's belief in our intrinsic need to come together. "We're all basically the same - we all yearn for love," Jewel says. And the more I've traveled in the world, the more I've seen how lonely everybody feels and what tremendous longing everybody has to be loved." Early 1998 found Jewel ready to return to the studio, and by the Spring, she began to seriously prepare for recording. When she met with longtime Madonna collaborator Patrick Leonard, Jewel knew she had found the right producer for the project. "I knew all along that the theme of this record would be Spirit," Jewel says, "and Patrick embraced that. It was also important to me that he was a musician and a songwriter. I wanted someone who understood producing from the artist's perspective. For similar reasons, we used a number of musicians that were solo artists - like Jude Cole and Josh Clayton - people that do their own music. They really understood the songwriting." Jewel and Leonard have fused elements of pop, folk, and rock into an evocative, finely woven musical tapestry. In addition to Jewel's guitar and Leonard's piano and keyboards, the backing group includes Jude Cole on acoustic guitar, Ednaswap bassist Paul Bushnell (Meredith Brooks, Celine Dion), electric guitarist Josh Clayton (ex-School of Fish), veteran Afro-Cuban jazz percussionist Luis Conte (Phil Collins, Madonna, Lyle Lovett), and drummer Brian Macleod (Sheryl Crow). Also appearing on Spirit are pedal steel guitarist Marty Rifkin (Tom Petty, Dwight Yoakum), drummer Vinnie Colaiuta, and guitarist James Harrah (John Prine, Wilson Phillips), as well as Red Hot Chili Peppers bassman Flea, who performs on the potent "Barcelona." "Flea is one of the most beautiful, heartfelt people on the planet," Jewel enthuses. "He was one of the first people I ever played my songs for. We've been friends for a long time." The majority of Spirit was recorded at Groove Masters in Santa Monica. Many of the album's songs, including "Enter From The East" and "Fat Boy," were written over the past two years and have been featured occasionally in Jewel's live performances. Others - such as "What's Simple Is True," "Jupiter," "Barcelona," "Life Uncommon," and "Kiss The Flame" - are more recent, while both "Do You" and "Hands" were written in the midst of the recording sessions. "I wrote 'Hands' because I think a lot about my own hands," Jewel says. "I look at the world and see such big problems, and my hands feel so small. Sometimes I have to remind myself that one person can make all the difference. People's hands burn churches. People's hands hold their children. We make choices every day, and we can use our hands to make the world a better, safer place." The songs on Spirit are remarkably evocative, like the anthemic, organ-fueled "Life Uncommon." Throughout the record, the arrangements and melodies match the lyrical suggestion of vulnerability leavened with inner strength. "Jupiter" and the tongue-in-cheek "Do You" provide an up-tempo sense of fun, as does "Down So Long" with its infectious groove. That said, not every song on Spirit required an intricate backdrop to express its sentiment. The plaintive "Fat Boy" and "Enter From The East" are pure unfettered Jewel, just singer, song and acoustic guitar. Overall, the record asserts Jewel's distinctly personal sensibility of reaching out to others. If there is any lesson to be found on the record, it is that of self-determination and maintaining one's faith. "I'm not telling people to become a specific anything," Jewel says. "I'm encouraging them to know themselves, keep their faith and follow whichever path is right for them. It's what I've encouraged in myself." * * * * * Of course, there is far more to Jewel's creativity than her music. Her first collection of poems, A Night Without Armor, displayed another side of her diverse talent. The book (published in May, 1998 by HarperCollins) went into a remarkable 15 printings as it became a mainstay of The New York Times best-seller list. As she gathered together the collection, Jewel was struck by the raw power of her early poems. "The poems that I wrote when I was 15 or 16 were pretty bold," she says. "There's something really great about that, and it reminded me not to sacrifice boldness for the sake of craft." Another new artistic frontier was crossed earlier in '98 as Jewel made her film acting debut. Her lead role as an 18-year-old bride in the Civil War drama, Ride With The Devil, found her co-starring with Tobey Maguire (The Ice Storm, Pleasantville) and Skeet Ulrich (As Good As It Gets) under the direction of Ang Lee (The Wedding Banquet, Sense And Sensibility, The Ice Storm). "He is so gifted," she says of her director. "To be guided by him was very comforting. "My writing and my music are a study of emotion and evolution," Jewel continues. "Acting is the study of the subconscious and trying to portray things that I didn't even understand or know about. I had to be very open and vulnerable to do that. It was difficult, because there were times when I was way out of my comfort zone - confused, uncertain, fearful. But I like getting to the core, my own included." Jewel credits her clear-eyed introspective nature to the influence of her mother, manager Nedra Carroll. She beams with love when discussing her mom, who, among her many contributions, sings backing vocals on "Hands" and a duet with her daughter on the album's additional track, "This Little Bird." This year Nedra formed Higher Ground For Humanity (HGH), their long-planned non-profit foundation with a mission to "support, inspire and empower new possibilities for humankind." "I would not be able to create as I do if not for her vision, her management, and her attention to my personal growth," Jewel says of her mom. "Nedra and I are committed to using our success as a platform for positive change." Higher Ground represents Nedra and Jewel's commitment to "being the difference that makes the difference." HGH fosters the positive spiritual evolution of human awareness and action, with a focus on programs geared towards youth, education, music and alternative health and healing. HGH develops and endorses individuals and organizations that integrate spiritual humanitarian principles into their work. Among the organizations currently supported by HGH are: Friends of the Institute of Noetic Sciences, a non-profit group founded to explore human consciousness; the Center for the Study of Consciousness, an organization of University of Washington research scientists studying the relationship between conscious thought and disease; Families Helping Families, a non-profit program providing support and education for families whose children have died; and the Jenna Druck Foundation's Young Women's Leadership Program, which provides training for high-school-age women. In addition, HGH is currently supporting the development of an alternative health and healing clinic in New Delhi, India. "As you can see, this isn't all about music," Jewel says. "Music is a wonderful expression and I love it, but the larger responsibility is to use the blessings of our lives to benefit humanity. Higher Ground For Humanity is an important step towards that goal." * * * * * Note from Mike: The paragraphs below (mentioning "taking to the road") were written last January. (i.e. a tour is not in the offing) Jewel soon plans to take to the road to allow her ever-growing audience the opportunity to get to feel the power of "Spirit." Though it was her live solo acoustic performances first caught the attention of many, Jewel is now looking forward to expanding the scope of her on-stage presentation. "I'm really glad this record supports a band," she says. "One of the hardest things about Pieces of You was playing this little folk record in stadiums." That knack for underdog achievement has followed Jewel since the release of Pieces of You more than three-and-a-half years ago. She happily admits to being the last person to foresee her own future: an American Music Award for "Best New Artist" (among many other accolades); gracing the cover of Time, Rolling Stone, Interview and other national magazines; hit singles with "Who Will Save Your Soul" and the RIAA-platinum "You Were Meant For Me/Foolish Games"; and a Billboard top 5-charting, RIAA 8x-platinum certified debut album. "Pieces of You just wasn't suppose to happen," Jewel laughs. "I simply hoped to make an honest record about where I was at the time. I've tried to do the same with Spirit." Spirit displays a depth of creative vision in its themes of faith, love, and human experience. The album's versatility and creative spark present Jewel as one of our most promising young singer/songwriters. "Every time you make a choice that supports your creativity - instead of trying to uphold a vision the world has of you - the better off you are," says Jewel. "I've made a record that I feel good about musically, and that I feel is true to myself. That is the most I can do." Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk This officially is like the 750th review of RWTD posted on the list lately ;-) It's from the USA Today website at http://www.usatoday.com/life/enter/movies/movie116.htm with no pictures, but there's an online video of Jewel talking about making the film (I presume it's about the film, I haven't watched the video). The article is also in the printed newspaper (Wednesday's issue), but there's no video (snicker snicker) and the only picture is of Tobey & Skeet. War buffs will go along for 'Ride' By Mike Clark, USA TODAY Ken Burns and Scarlett O'Hara notwithstanding, there haven't been as many Civil War movies as one might think - at least in proportion to the lasting historical significance of the tragedy. Director Ang Lee's long and lumpy Ride With the Devil (2.5 stars out of four) is redeemed some by unromanticized authenticity, but it's likely to be appreciated most (and perhaps exclusively) by subject enthusiasts just happy to see the film exist. Headlined by the not-always-dynamic acting mix of Skeet Ulrich, Tobey Maguire and pop singer Jewel, the film takes a Confederate viewpoint in its portrayal of the makeshift Bushwhackers - a band of guerrillas who burned out and murdered Union sympathizers, just as their Northern Jayhawker opposites did in the reverse. In the course of this 2¼-hour epic, these ragtag causists don't accomplish very much - and they know it. This is one of the movie's key points but also one of its dramatic liabilities. Jake (Maguire) has a German-emigre and pro-Union father who is killed by Yankees well aware of his son's sentiments. Jack (Ulrich) is the son of a plantation owner, George (Simon Baker), a young edition of a Southern gentleman, and - in the movie's most interesting role, though belatedly so - Holt (Jeffrey Wright) is an ex-slave loyal to the Bushwhackers' cause because George purchased and freed him. There are several peripheral characters, but those four and a war widow (Jewel) are the principals upon which the movie depends. Lee's direction seems colder and more impersonal than in any of his previous pictures, which include three charming Taiwanese comedies (Pushing Hands, The Wedding Banquet, Eat Drink Man Woman) as well as Sense and Sensibility and The Ice Storm. Despite some capable action scenes (including an elaborately staged attack on Lawrence, Kan.) and the overall scope of Frederick (Blue Velvet) Elmes' cinematography, the movie starts to engage only in the later going when Wright's role takes on prominence and Maguire begins to amuse when he gets trapped in a relationship with the widowed Jewel. Their courtship (if that's what it is) isn't all that compelling, but it does relieve some of the frequent monotony (which, in fairness, probably reflects how the Bushwhackers' lives probably were). Jewel is more like an acting zircon because she just can't project, but at least she looks the part, and her novelty value isn't unwelcome. Though Elvis got to sing in his Civil War movie (screen debut Love Me Tender), Lee has wisely resisted shoehorning in any Jewel vocals until the end credits - though a song break would have been a given four decades ago. End of article. You can put away them dictionaries....I looked up "zircon". According to AOL's online dictionary, it means: a tetragonal mineral consisting of a silicate of zirconium and occurring usually in brown or grayish square prisms of adamantine luster or sometimes in transparent forms which are used as gems. Wow! Talk about uncanny! I too always thought of Jewel as a transparent tetragonal mineral! ;-) Anyone have a good idea what the author meant by that? (I mean, I know what he meant, but why the heck did he choose "zircon"?) The issue of NOW came out TODAY (Thursday) and will be gone very soon. It's a free paper and can be found in newspapers boxes all around Toronto (mostly at subway stops). It's from Jewel's brother Shane, who helps manage Higher Ground For Humanity & The Clearwater Project, which you all have been so generously supporting in your current "Giving Back To Jewel" Christmas present project. I think you'll be quite happy to hear how things are going with your wonderful project, so without further ado, I hand you over to Shane: From: Shane Kilcher To: The EDAs November 25th, 1999 Hello EDA's! My wife and her friends are all down in the kitchen cooking away, the kids are all trying their best to demolish the recently cleaned house, and I just came in from cleaning up the yard. I don't know if its some innate holiday spirit thing, the smell of some really good food cooking, or having friends and family gathered under one roof, but I'm positively infected with good cheer. I sat down to start calling friends and family who live far away, but first I wanted to write a note to all of you. I just got back from a trip to Chile, where a wonderful organization is working with the local government to start including community, the rainforest, and an environment based program (such as a tree planting campaign, etc) in public schools, particularly the ones in the poorer areas of Chile. I returned happy, but tired from the 15+ hour plane ride, to find the most wonderful "work" waiting on my desk. A pile of donations for the EDA/ClearWater project! And even though I had only intended to stop by the office quickly on my way home I sat down and started listing all your names and adding up the donations so far. So far you have already raised over $1,200 and the mail-in donations are only starting to trickle in! I'm positively and absolutely impressed, what an amazing group of people! I know Jewel is absolutely going to love your gift to her, and your gift to one lucky community that needs clean drinking water. I've decided that once she gets the card, I will help her type up all the names of the participants so she can post an email to the list thanking everyone by name who contributed to this project. You guys absolutely amaze me! I doubt there is another group of Angels like you in all the world. I know Jewel will be touched. Keep up the good work, and have a very happy Thanksgiving! Shane Kilcher ---------------------------------------------------------------- So there you have it. The EDA have already contributed over $1200 toward HGH/Clearwater as of today! :-) For those of you who would enjoy participating in this EDA project, I'll repost the donation instructions below. Thanks so much to all who have already contributed & thanks to all who will soon contribute, helping to make the EDA total grow & in turn helping so many others less fortunate. Individually everyone can make a difference, but together we can achieve incredible things! Have a very Happy Thanksgiving & a wonderful weekend! Alan If you'd like to participate in the EDA "Giving Back To Jewel" HGH/Clearwater Project AND have your name listed on the "EDA Donation List" to be included with the EDA card we'll be giving to Jewel on Christmas, please follow the most convenient instructions for you: You can contribute directly to HGH/Clearwater either by mail or through the HGH website. You can determine what is most convenient. (Cash being sent through the mail is not recommended, but you can do it.) Please make any checks or money orders payable to: Higher Ground/Clearwater (Please DO NOT make them out to HGH, EDA Project, Jewel, or anything else!) Please write "EDA" in the memo line or in the mailing address as follows. Mail it directly to HGH at: Higher Ground For Humanity Attention: EDA (<-don't forget this line!) PMB #302 300 CVD #108A Carlsbad, CA 92008 USA #2 For those who prefer the ease of using a credit card for their contribution: Go to the HGH Website at: http://www.highergroundhumanity.org. That is unquestionably the fan gift Jewel cherishes most! Cheers! Alan PS. But for all its clumsy dialogue and loose plotting, this is historical filmmaking of a high order, both visually and thematically ambitious. Although it's laden with youthful star power, "Ride With the Devil" is no exuberant joyride. Rather, it's a dark and sober fable of lost innocence, demonstrating how easily juvenile enthusiasm can be perverted or destroyed. Maybe this view of war isn't revolutionary, but it's presented with severe elegance by Taiwan-born director Ang Lee, who brings his dispassionate but sympathetic outsider's eye to another peculiar corner of American society. (His previous film was "The Ice Storm.") Even if this isn't the best Civil War film ever made, it's one of the most interesting and least dogmatic, perhaps because Lee has no vested interest in the internecine conflict that continues to echo through our culture almost 140 years later. At first, the story of Jake Roedel (Tobey Maguire) and Jack Bull Chiles (Skeet Ulrich), best friends in 1860 rural Missouri who join a gang of pro-Southern marauders known as "bushwhackers," seems an awfully long way from the 1970s Long Island anomie of "The Ice Storm." But there are threads that connect the two pictures: Both are studies of human beings in harsh weather, certainly a common issue in most of North America, and both find a sere and memorable beauty in landscapes not conventionally considered lovely. In fact, Lee and cinematographer Frederick Elmes (whose impressive résumé includes "Blue Velvet" and "Wild at Heart" as well as "The Ice Storm") shot "Ride With the Devil" in an impressive wide-screen format; see it at the biggest megaplex you can find. (It was mostly filmed on location in the hill country along the Kansas-Missouri border, where much of the terrain looks no different than it did a century ago.) Furthermore, both "The Ice Storm" and "Ride With the Devil" examine American society at moments of epoch-making turmoil. In the press notes to this film, Lee writes that he sees the Civil War as the point when the values of Yankee Protestant capitalism -- in particular, the notion of society as a group of free and equal individuals in economic competition -- began its inexorable triumph over tradition-bound, communitarian cultures from Missouri to China. If the Northern victory was both necessary and inevitable in historical terms, its long-term global legacy is considerably more ambiguous. Lee and screenwriter James Schamus (who adapted Daniel Woodrell's novel "Woe to Live On") are certainly not endorsing the Confederate cause by focusing on the bushwhackers. Part of the point of "Ride With the Devil," in fact, is that the dirty war in Kansas and Missouri was something like an ugly neighborhood feud, where men fought for their friends, families and hometowns rather than over some abstract concept of nationhood. In fact, by any logical assessment, Jake, the son of a German immigrant who passionately supports Lincoln and the Union, doesn't belong on the Southern side at all. But after his best friend, dashing babe-magnet Jack Bull, sees his father killed and his house burned by pro-Northern Kansas raiders known as "Jayhawkers," Jake never questions his loyalties. Maguire's introverted, half-mumbled acting style, employed with such emotional power in both "The Ice Storm" and "Pleasantville," might seem an odd choice for a 19th century character. But Jake is a perennial outsider, a merchant's son trying to conform to the ideals of Southern masculinity, and Maguire's halting, self-conscious manner suits him perfectly. Ulrich, on the other hand, was surely born to play a member of the decaying rural aristocracy. With his elegant sweep of hair, glittering eyes and supercilious bearing, he makes Jack Bull into a commanding, pseudo-noble figure, almost eager to throw away his life in misguided heroism. "Ride With the Devil" gets off to a fumbling start, with lots of labored picnic chitchat about the impending war and "that black Republican Abe Lincoln." Perhaps the epitome of unlikely exposition is reached when someone says, "Lawrence, Kan., and its abolitionists are a long way from here," as if it were something others in the conversation didn't know. But after Jake and Jack Bull take to horse and join the band of daredevil bushwhackers led by Black John (James Caviezel), the leisurely pace and florid period dialogue begin to pay dividends. As the only slave state to remain in the Union, Missouri was torn apart by bloody, small-scale guerrilla warfare -- Woodrell has said his novel was partly inspired by present-day events in the Balkans. Lee's skirmish scenes, although undeniably exciting, emphasize the random brutality of the carnage as small bands of bushwhackers and Jayhawkers shoot it out at close range from farmhouse to farmhouse. Schamus' dialogue is a little off-putting at first -- it presumes that 19th century Americans actually talked in the stilted, piss-elegant phrases they used to write letters. So we have Jake, after losing a finger in a shootout, announcing, "It makes me notable by the loss," and a fellow bushwhacker calling out, "We shall to the Evans farm, boys!" or telling a visiting widow, "I believe we can essay some hospitality." I can't judge the veracity of this device, but like the rest of the movie it finally becomes convincing; the details in "Ride With the Devil" are so carefully managed you feel as if you can taste the wood smoke and smell the unwashed boots. Black John's band also includes the blond rake George Clyde (Australian actor Simon Baker) and his constant companion, Daniel Holt (Jeffrey Wright), a freed slave who feels he owes Clyde his life for liberating him. So Lee not only focuses on the little-known Kansas-Missouri front of the war, but on the undisputed if historically uncomfortable fact that some black men fought for the Confederacy, against their own evident best interests. Convincing a contemporary audience that a black character feels a debt of honor to the slave-owners' regime might seem an impossible task. Wright, an extraordinarily talented actor who played the title role in "Basquiat" and the drag queen Belize in "Angels in America" on Broadway, pretty nearly pulls it off. As the film progresses and the war in the Missouri Valley descends into anarchy, the focus gradually shifts to the three outsiders attached to the bushwhacker cause: Jake, Holt and the farm widow Sue Lee (Jewel). In her feature-film debut, Jewel turns out to be a robust performer with an easy, unforced manner; there's no hint of pop-star glibness to her acting. When the bushwhackers hole up on her farm for the winter, she and Jack Bull strike up a plausible romance with implausible speed. After the fighting resumes and fate interrupts Jack Bull and Sue Lee's idyll, the single woman, the former slave and the German have no one to turn to except each other. There is tenderness, humor and even some optimism in Lee and Schamus' lengthy (perhaps too lengthy) denouement, as this trio strives to heal their emotional and physical wounds, but almost no sentimentality. Jake and Holt, after all, have participated in the Lawrence massacre, an infamous bushwhacker raid into Kansas during which 180 civilians were slaughtered. Both have also acquired a nemesis in fellow bushwhacker Pitt Mackeson (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), an almost spectral figure of swishy, early-Jagger bigotry and hatred. As Mackeson's chilling final encounter with Jake, Holt and Sue Lee suggests, neither the war's survivors nor their nation will ever be the same.
