I'm making more! Date: Mon, 2 Aug 1999 16:22:32 -0500 Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hey EDAs, Did you get your '99 EDA T-Shirt? Well I have been getting lots of requests for more shirts. Emails just about every day asking me if I still have any shirts left or if I will be making any more. I have decided that I just might make more given enough of you want one. There will be a few changes though. I obviously won't be getting near the response that I got when I did the first order...I can see about 30 people tops ordering a shirt rather than 120 like last time. Since it has been so long since I had shirts printed I will have to pay the set up fee again which is $25 dollars. The bad news however is that since I will not be ordering as many the cost does go up. The more shirts I order the lower the cost is. I dont have the exact details worked out but I can see the total cost being up to 3 dollars more per shirt. Although I am pretty sure the shirt will still be less than $20. So the question hear is do you want a shirt and will you send me the money?? Last time I got over 200 orders but I only got money from like half those people. So only tell me you want a shirt only if you REALLY want one. When I find out how many people want one I will work out a price and put it on my web page and make a post about it. And lastly...lets get this done quickly. I will be going back up to school in less than a month and I dont want to be wrapping shirts and working on this a month after school has started. I will need to be concentrating on my grades instead. If you are new and want to see a picture of the shirt's graphic, go to this here page http://picket.cc.purdue.edu/~shortdog/Jewel/t-shirt.html If you want a shirt, message me ASAP. You can also find all the new tour merchandise at the website store. I'll also soon be introducing you to Wendy, who will be working directly with EDAs & online fans to include YOU in some new areas of Jewel's website, soon to be unveiled. Stay tuned. I'm helping Jewel resurrect some more old ones. "Carnivore" seemed like an obvious place to start & more will surface soon. That newest song that many are asking about has no official title, but for now, its being catalogued as "Does Anyone Still Believe In Love". I hope you enjoyed Storytellers. You guys rock. *applause* Rusted Root was a lot different than I thought they would be. Lots of cool instruments, but I couldn't understand much more than "The Cat is Blue" on their songs. Steve Poltz had a lot shorter set than I thought he'd have, but I loved it. He look great in his cowboy shirt and boots. The crowd was on and off with him for some reason, but he dealt with it great and earned a lot of cheers for the Star Wars Song. And he has WAY too much energy, bouncing around the stage all night. I Love You Why Are You Going Out with that Gold's Gym Guy Just a Chair Everything About You ABC's of Love Silver Lining I Love You, I Adore You, What do you want for an Encore Star Wars Song Waterfalls Jewel - Everytime the lights dimmed for a moment, cheers went up in the crowd. When she finally cam on stage, it was all dark and she started out singing "Near You Always" a cappella. The lights came on during the chorus, and it was beautiful. She wore a black tank top that showed a bit of belly and a knee length back skirt. She was full of energy and really busted the house with an acoustic version of "Carnivore." She and Steve also told the story of when they met, which was apparently when he worked in a donut shop and got fired for giving her a free donut. And though I'm sure her voice killed, she still yodeled a much slower version of "Chime Bells" a cappella as her last encore. For a concert that is for an album of inspirational songs, it rocked the house down. Near You Always - done a cappella Deep Water - acoustic then joined by band What's Simple is True - with band - on this song, it sounded like she was always late with the lyrics, starting them about 2-3 seconds after it started on the album version. But she made it work. Hands - with band Jupitor - with band - The rockin' new version You Were Meant For Me - with band - Steve and her looking at each other while singing the chorus Morning Song - acoustic Carnivore - acoustic - BEAUTIFUL!!! Her voice just soared throughout the chorus. *happy sigh* New song - fast - with Pettibone- first words were "Take my hand" - Barcelona - with band - still love how her voice flies on "Let Me Fly" Life Uncommon - with band - sounds much more rock when in concert Foolish Games - with keyboardist - Greg? Been Down So Long - with band - was starting to get into a bit of a scat throughout the song. This is also when she started scream singing some and the lights started flashing and blinding everyone. Very cool. Even if I still see bits of purple flying around. Do You Want to Play - with band - I liked it much better when I could see it live than the real audio I got. Down - with band- This is what I was most looking forward to hearing played really loud and great - I wasn't disappointed. More funky lights. Love Me Just Leave Me Alone - with band - More rockin' and light shows and scream singing. Who Will Save Your Soul - with band - they should release a version of this called the 'scat' remix. Her voice being repeated by Pettibone on guitar is just amazing. No kitty cats this time though. *more happy sighs* Encores: Abscence of Fear - acoustic - very etheral and pretty. Appreciated it even more after all the rock. Chime Bells - a cappella - Her voice sounded tired, and it was a different tune than I 'm used to hearing her sing (much slower) but she did a great job when it came to yodeling fast, even if it was a bit of a different yodel as well. My sister said the concert was worth it just to see Jewel yodel (of course, since I paid for her, that doesn't make complete sense. :) I am SO glad I went. Though I didn't have the chance to meet anyone in person, it was great being able to say I was in the same room as Jewel and Steve Poltz, and see them perform after three years of waiting to get a chance. Wish I could of met some of you, but I didn't see any other EDAs there (I was wearing my shirt and everything!) Hopefully I'll be able to get down to the Virginia Beach show later. ~Kristy From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Thu Aug 5 21:13:38 1999 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id VAA06177 for jewel-news-outgoing; Thu, 5 Aug 1999 21:12:58 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <199908060112.VAA06177@smoe.org> To: Jewel-News@smoe.org From: ducksoup@spectra.net Date: 1 Aug 99 18:40:28 -0800 Subject: Jewel-News: * Jewel Storytellers repeat schedule - repost Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hi everyone :-) I'm already getting posts sent in asking about the repeat schedule of Jewel's Storytellers on VH1 (seems lots of ya are out on Sunday nights). JEWEL: No, my poetry has always been very separate from my songwriting. I need them for different reasons. My songwriting is something I do for fun. Poetry is something that I needed to get past the confused and lonely periods of my life. CARSON: When you go to put these thoughts on paper how do you distinguish them from the poetry and the song pile? JEWEL: They're just separate for some reason. I find that my poetry is autobiographical whereas my songwriting is about social situations. CARSON: Is this something you would have pursued even with no background in music? How linked are these two areas? JEWEL: Yes, I care a lotabout poetry. It's when I'm the most honest and I'm able to express myself. Poetry is an evolution of your soul rather than an evolution of your intellect. CARSON: Are you going to be touring with the book, doing readings and signings? I mean their lyrics are real strong." #33 K.D. Lang- "I've always loved K.D. Lang's voice. I like seeing women that make it on the sheer strength of their talent." #13 Ella Fitzgerald- "I love Ella Fitzgerald. Her voice is very versatile and very playful. I mean, she was very very good with the band. Instead of just being a singer in front of the band, she really was in the band. There were also some remarks/notes made of Jewel: When they were showing the different faces of music played by women, she was shown among a group '90's women, and right at the end, when women were asked to name their favorite music stars of tomorrow, PAT BENATAR said of Jewel: "Jewel's great! She's incredible!" Even though Jewel did not make VH-1's official list(although Ani Difranco came in at #90), she did make the voters at #34- tied with Courtney Love. I've been lucky enough to see two jewel shows in one week. I was also at the Jones Beach show in New York last Saturday. I have to say that I preferred the Toronto Show for a couple of reasons... first of all - her acoustic set was MUCH better at the Toronto Show. She started with a song I've never heard before. part of the chorus is "Down Down Down" (it's not the rocky song "Down" BTW).. she said it was new.. she played it at woodstock I think. She then started to sing a song I recognised but couldn't put a name on.. and suddenly when she got to the chorus I realised.. it was CARNIVORE!! Now I really thought this one had been put to rest forever but I'm SOOO glad that it hasn't been.. it's a WONDERFUL song.. one of my faves. then she sang Sometimes it be that way - which was fantastic also. She rounded off the acoustic set with Enter From the East.. which was beautiful. the second thing i liked about this show was the fact that the audience was SOOO lively.. much more so than the Jones Beach Show. when Down So Long played a few people started getting up and dancing and then as soon as she started singing Down everybody just RUSHED down to the front of the stage - she didn't ask us to or anything. I got RIGHT up close! everyone was dancing and clapping and you could see she was having a good time. Who Will Save Your Soul was fabulous also. and the last great thing was the fact that I got to see the encore. at jones beach i had to rush off after WWSYS because i needed to get a bus but this time i got to hear Absence of Fear, a poem (miracle - dedicated to Elaine.. or Elaina) and Chime Bells. Anyway.. overall it was a great show here's the full set list: Near You Always Deep Water What's Simple is True Hands Jupiter You Were Meant for Me [unknown acoustic song] Carnivore Sometime it be that way enter from the east barcelona life uncommon foolish games down so long down love me just leave me alone who will save your soul Absence of Fear [poem - miracle] Chime Bells cya later steve From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Thu Aug 5 21:16:58 1999 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id VAA06243 for jewel-news-outgoing; Thu, 5 Aug 1999 21:13:58 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <199908060113.VAA06243@smoe.org> To: Jewel-News@smoe.org From: jewelseda@mindspring.com Date: 2 Aug 99 18:34:16 -0800 Subject: Jewel-News: * Did you miss the 99 EDA shirt?? I'm making more! Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hey EDAs, Did you get your '99 EDA T-Shirt? (The link is below the calendar screen at www.jeweljk.com) There's also a lot of new information on the calendar & headline news areas including the general theatrical release day for Ride With The Devil, Jewel's next album info, her Grand Ole Opry appearance with Merle Haggard and of course all TV related info. These diversions helped combat the snooze factor, but an aura of mellow sameness enveloped the concert - despite the 25-year-old's immense vocal talents. Interplay between Jewel and guitarist/ex-beau Steve Poltz provided the evening's liveliest moments. Jewel co-wrote the smash hit I Was Meant for You with Poltz, who was given a chance to sing more masculine lyrics during the tune's opening segment. The pair followed I Was Meant for You with a cheek-to-cheek, tight-harmony duet of I Thought I Saw You Last Night. Earlier, Jewel grouped the first three songs of current album Spirit to nice effect. Deep Water, What's Simple Is True and Hands include optimistic truisms such as "It's nothing without love" and "In the end, only kindness matters." Hit single Hands rocked the hardest, with Jewel's band stepping beyond its New Age arrangements for a stab at Neil Young territory. Call it "Crazy Horse lite." Dressed in black pants and navel-exposing dress shirt, Jewel expertly preened and pouted for cameras projecting close-ups on a large video screen at the back of the stage. During a 30-minute performance as solo supporting act, Poltz (3 stars) did a fine job of transforming big-league venue Deer Creek into a cozy coffee-house setting. As boy with acoustic guitar, Poltz applies a brave wit to tunes equally influenced by Elvis Costello and Tom Waits. He had the crowd with him when he sang about the ABC's of love, Krispy Kreme and losing a girl to "that Gold's Gym guy." As jam-oriented opening act, underappreciated Rusted Root (3-1/2 stars) packed an array of sonic textures into its hourlong global hoe-down. Closely cropped vocalist Michael Glabicki guided his Pittsburgh sextet through fiery, melodic and dance-friendly material that's always well-received in Indianapolis. Near the end of Rusted Root's set, five band members participated in a storming, freestyle percussion interlude powerful enough to bring rain. In some alternate universe, Rusted Root sells out 20,000-seat venues while the Dave Matthews Band struggles to find work. ===================================== SETLIST: Near You Always Deep Water What's Simple Is True Hands Jupiter some italian opera song (she said the title, but I don't know what it is) You Were Meant For Me (Poltz got to sing his masculine line) I Thought I Saw You Last Night Don't Everything Breaks Sometimes Too Darn Hot Barcelona Life Uncommon Foolish Games Down So Long Down Love Me Just Leave Me Alone Who Will Save Your Soul ENCORE: Absence of Fear (wanted to read poetry, but no one had a book handy) Summertime ============================================== My extremely short review: I loved it. The audience was an intriguing mix of neo-hippie Root fans, teeny-bopper Jewel followers and red-blooded men attracted to Jewel's dreamy music and sensuous looks. The show opened with Rusted Root, the Pittsburgh-based band that has built a Grateful-Dead-style following based on its extended, eloquent jam feel. The audience was unaware that this tour may be the band's swan song: According to reports from Pittsburgh, the group has decided to break up after the tour. If there was any friction in the band, however, it wasn't apparent. Rusted Root played a solid set hindered only by the usual jam-band problem of not knowing when to end a song. If there was a star of the night, it was Steve Poltz, who played an acoustic set after Rusted Root. The San Diego singer-songwriter lived with Jewel for two years before she became famous, and the two co-wrote her biggest hits - ''Who Will Save Your Soul?'' and ''You Were Meant for Me.'' Poltz, who also plays guitar in Jewel's band, provided the night's comic relief with a clever set of inventive, fun songs that included such tunes as ''Why Are You Going Out With the Guy From Gold's Gym?'' and a goofy tribute song to the ''Star Wars'' movies. Then Jewel took the stage with her powerful, if girlish, voice. She has practically assumed the role of the Linda Ronstadt of the '90s, with a vocal style that both rocks and drips with intimacy. Jewel's empathic, sensitive singing was refreshing and poignant as she went through such hits as ''Pieces of You,'' ''Who Will Save Your Soul?'' and ''Hands'' (from her new album, ''Spirit''). The 25-year-old's tender singing and light pop fare are almost too sweet for a rock show, however. Jewel's biggest problem is translating her folk-based pop sounds to an arena crowd of this size. As tasty as her set was, it still seemed a show meant for a smaller club. Her stage style is to wink, nod and toss her hair, and she stayed in her '90s Earth mother role by reading the crowd a poem from her book ''A Night Without Armor.'' Through it all, the huge video screen almost saved the show, picking up her subtle nuances. While she closed the set wailing and rocking out on several songs, Jewel still seems a few years away from being a rock 'n' roll diva who can truly captivate the big crowds. I just thought I'd keep you all up to date on Jewel's UK TV appearances. At 1.35a.m this morning, a 15 minute programme entitled 'Pieces of Jewel' was shown. The bulk of the programme was made up of clips culled from various sources, to highlight the phenomenal change and growth of Jewel's career. The programme began with clips from the 'Introduction to Jewel' video. We got to see a young, giggly and excited Jewel talking about how her dreams had become reality beyond her wildest expectations, as well as clips of the WWSYS video. A highlight for me was seeing Jewel surf and then go up to an apartment to see a certain Mr Steve Poltz sprawled out in bed with a red dress on and a bottle of beer in his hand! We got a tour of the Denny's bathroom as Jewel talked about how great it was to wash the suds off the back of her head in the low faucets. Then, the phenomenal rise in her career was highlighted with clips from her 'Vatican' performance of Hands and a clip of poetry reading (The Slow Migration of Glaciers) from Virgin Megastore. The programme ended with a clip of live performance of 'Jupiter' suggesting the programme was edited together fairly recently (with it being her next single and all). Overall, I thought the programme was great. Anyone with th 'Introduction...' video probably didn't miss much and the various 98/99 clips have probably already been seen by most U.S e.d.a's. Still I think it was great for us Brits!!! Hope I didn't bore you all Rach xxxxxx From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Thu Aug 12 12:23:47 1999 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id MAA15111 for jewel-news-outgoing; Thu, 12 Aug 1999 12:23:36 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <199908121623.MAA15111@smoe.org> To: Jewel-News@smoe.org From: twh662@juno.com Date: 9 Aug 99 19:22:20 -0800 Subject: Jewel-News: Indianapolis (Deer Creek) review and Setlist (8/7/99) Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Jewel's yodels, preens to spice bland show By David Lindquist, Star/News Staff Writer 8/8/99 JEWEL (THREE STARS out of FOUR) (Star ratings: 4 excellent, 3 good, 2 fair, 1 poor) As girl with acoustic guitar, Jewel doesn't have it easy when she takes her introspective ballads to large outdoor amphitheaters such as Deer Creek Music Center. The only thing the article says about her is; "Jewel, or as the Twelve Tribes probably call her, Yewel, is a funfest by comparision, shaking her demurely clothed body just barely enough to keep us awake." - by Rob Sheffield. This issue also has a chart called the "Summer-Concert Scorecard". Jewel's tour is lisited as one of the "13 Top Tours". Here what it says; "Tour: Jewel, Dates: Through August 28th, Venue: Amphitheaters 4,250-20,000, Tickets Available: In all markets, Ticket Prices: $15-$35, Length of Set: Two hours, Encore: 'Absence of Fear,' 'Angel Standing By' and 'Chime Bells' (only the yodeling part), Gross: $165,340, Sponsor: Tommy Hilfiger, Special Features: Childhood photos of the starlet projected on three screens" This issue won't be out in stores for a couple of weeks yet, and probably won't be worth the $3.00 for it's Jewel content alone. RIDE WITH THE DEVIL - STARRING Tobey Maguire, Skeet Ulrich, Jewel, Jeffrey Wright - DIRECTED BY Ang Lee BUZZ-O-METER: 5 (out of 10.. Actually pretty good compared to a lot of the other movies..) WHAT'S THE BIG DEAL? Lee's follow-up to The Ice Storm, his critically acclaimed...wait! Is JEWEL in this?! Oscar winner Matt Damon was approached to star in this $35 million Civil War drama, about childhood friends fighting on opposing sides of the Kansas-Missouri border. When Damon opted to make The Talented Mr. Ripley instead, Lee picked Ulrich as his replacement, adding him to to a crew of Ice Storm alums that includes Maguire and screenwriter James Schamus. But if Ulrich felt like the new kid in school, imagine what it must have been like for multiplatinum pop singer Jewel, whose acting experience had hitherto been confined to emoting in her videos and being mistaked for Renee Zellweger. "We didn't just let her come in with no problem," says Maguire. "We bumped [her] around a little." Jewel may have been too busy learning the ropes to even notice: "I was just clueless," she says. "It took me a day to figure out what stand-in means. But you learn." It's this cluelessness, Lee argues, that made her so right for hr role as a shy war widow. "There's something virignal about Jewel," Lee says. "There's an authenticity to her performance because she's being watched for the first time." Or, as Maguire puts it, "I definitely have respect for Jewel as somebody who works hard, you know, and does the best she can, and I think that she ends up like...coming off good." Claiming worldly maturity by the age of 18 may sound a teensy bit bratty, but as Jewel points out, she'd already 'lived quite a lot of life' - growing up without electricity, waitressing to rednecks - before she set up home...in her car. 'I'd been goofing around writing poems, just for fun. It wasn't something that I'd meant for the world to hear,' she explains sweetly of the naive little ditties on Pieces Of You (her first album, it just happened to sell 10 million). Now she's 24, there's another album, Spirit, and even a role in Ang Lee's new movie To Live On. 'It's a hard business if you do it for the wrong reasons. But if you do it because you have to and because you love music, then passion will carry you through.' Let us now wave lighters and give thanks. --------------------------------------- The other five "divas" in the article were Skin (Skunk Anansie), Chrissie Hynde, Sheryl Crow, Dolores O'Riordan and Charlotte Hatherley (Ash). You can read my comments at the bottom. I: So you were at Woodstock. First of all, I have to ask you, what did you think of the Red Hot Chili Peppers wardrobe? J: Oh… You gotta love em. (laughs) I: Oh man… How was that experience for you? J: Woodstock was a lot of fun actually. I mean I was pretty surprised they were all really… you know you never know how they are really gonna react until you walk out there. Everyone was really great actually. I: Right. Let’s just say for the record that I was not the guy that knocked that tower down. J: (laughs) I: Uh… You’re gonna be in Minneapolis tomorrow night… J: Yes I: …at the Roy Wilkims Auditorium. How do you like playing in Minneapolis? J: Oh, I like it a lot, I've had a lot of fun shows there. I: So after writing the uh… Pieces of You album, since that was a lot of success, was there any pressure at all in writing the follow up, Spirit? J: Hmm, not really. I just sorta feel like my job is to try and write songs that are honest. Wether… you know… that’s sorta of my job, the rest takes care of itself. So, I don't think I'll always be… Cheerleader of the Year every year you know? (laughs) I: (laughs) Well, you’re the cheerleader of the year in my book. You know, I loved you on the Storytellers episode on VH1, how did you like… you looked like you were having fun with the concept of the performance. Taking breaks in-between songs, and telling the stories about the song, is that your general approach when you do put on a show? J: Yeah, generally. You know like when I'm like doing shows, I'm always telling stories, or uh… I love performing. I love having people in front of me and talking with them. It was nice to be able to… You know it was a great show because it let’s you do that kind of format. I: So you did a film now, about the Civil War, tell me a little bit about that. J: It’s called ride with the devil. It’s directed by Ang Lee, who’s a brilliant director. He did uh… The Ice Storm, and Sense and Sensibility and… I play uh, a civil war widow. I: Do you want to do more films? J: Yeah, I'll definitely do more films. It sure means a lot of fun, just because I get to keep learning. It’s a bigger learning career for me because you know (I have) less experience in it. Whereas in singing… I've been doing it my whole life. It gets a little easier that way. I: What do you think of this Blair Witch Project? Did you see that? J: I am not a scary movie fan, I get too scared. (laughs) I: (laughs) Oh man. Do you have a favorite movie of all time? J: Not particularly, I don't know if I could really pick one. I: Your Night Without Armor is absolutely terrific. J: Thank you. I: And you are going to be reciting some poetry from Borders books tomorrow? J: Yup I: Ok, well we’re looking forward to that. Are you going to write more poetry books? J: I'm writing a book right now, but it’s not of poetry, (it’s) a bit of short stories and prose. I: And what is one of your favorite poets? J: I'd have to say Bukowski and Pablo Neruda (sp?) I: Very nice. Can I ask you some really really important questions now? J: uh-uh I: What other professions would you like to try other then music or writing? J: hmmmm…. I: If you had to pick another profession. J: I guess team roping. I: Wow. J: That would be a lot of fun. I: What style of music do you least like to listen to? In your own spare time? J: I think heavy metal. I: So you’re not a big Kiss or Impaler fan I take it. J: Well Kiss is kinda different. I like Kiss alright. (laughs) I: (laughs) But you’re not into Mega-Death and all of that stuff. J: Yeah, Mega Death isn't quite me. I: Yeah, that’s not a real… I don't think Mega Death will be writing poetry books of there own, do you? J: I have no idea, probably they will. I: (laughs) What is your favorite take out food? J: Take out food? Chicken Wings. I: Wow, you’re not a White Castle fan are you? J: I love White Castle actually. I: (laughs) Late night drive-through at White Castle after a concert maybe? (I can't understand what she said here) I: Last but not least, this is gonna be a cliché. Are you single? J: I am not single. I: You are not single? J: No. I: Ohh! No! My feelings and many other male listeners will be very disappointed. J: Yeah, I'm sure. I: So what can we expect tomorrow night at the Roy Wilkims Auditorium? J: Um… just music I guess you know. A show. I: Well, I can't wait to see it. And, uh, as always, it’s a pleasure talking to you. Good luck with the poetry, you’re an excellent writer, and we look forward to the show tomorrow night. J: Thank you very much for your time. I: Alright, thanks a lot Jewel. J: Alright, talk to you later. I: Have a good day. J: Bye. Here are my comments. THE INTERVIEWER IS SOOO STUPID! First of all, Roy Wilkims Auditorium is in St. Paul not Minneapolis! Second of all, Barnes and Noble is doing the poetry reading thing, not Borders. He was fake laughing through the whole thing! Now about Jewel. I think she was really tired, because she kind of fake laughed too. And I think I heard her yawn a couple times. I think I will make some .wav files too, just for the fun of it. Hehe. So, I will tell you all when I have those made. Oh yeah, there was some stuff, in the beginning that I didn't get taped, but it was mostly just welcome stuff. How great was Jewel's answer to the What can we expect at the concert question! I mean how is she supposed to answer that?! Ok, I think that's it. bye! Jewel Holiday Album (title TBA) The 25-year old Jewel has been acclaimed as one of the most gifted and accomplished artists in popular music today. Recently certified nine-times platinum by the RIAA, the album includes hit singles "You Were Meant For Me," "Who Will Save Your Soul," and "Foolish Games." SPIRIT, Jewel's second album, was released by Atlantic in November 1998 and amde its debut at #3 on the Billboard 200 chart. The album, which features the hit singles "Hands," and "Down So Long," has been certified RIAA triple-platinum and is about to hit the four million mark in U.S. sales. Jewel brings even a little more joy to the world with her all-new Christmas collection. Produced by the legendary Arif Mardin (Aretha Franklin, Barbra Streisand, Bette Midler, & Chaka Khan) the holiday set features the singer performing such seasonal favorites as "Silent Night," "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" and "Winter Wonderland," as well as a new Christmas-themed version of her recent hit, "Hands." In addition, it includes an inspirational rendition of "Ave Maria" along with a stunning "Gospel Medley," which encompasses the spiritual standard "Go Tell It On The Mountain," the singer's own "Life Uncommon," and the Bette Midler staple, "From a Distance." (for new folks, that is the official Jewel Store) I called him to relate to him the number of Instant Messages and emails I've recently received either personally or through the list which were about defective merchandise either purchased online from JMerch or at a Jewel concert. Most were about the Spirit Tour book, which is a problem they know about. (It seems there have been many defective ones, including the one I received a few days ago...some "environmentally safe glues" just ain't doing the trick) Basically, he said that if you purchased something defective either through them online, mail order, or official Jewel merchandise at a Jewel concert, to please call them at their toll free number 877-295-3935 and they will make ammends (or you can email them at customerservice@jeweljk.com ). Johnson Post-Dispatch Pop Music Critic Jewel made one wish during the encore of her Riverport Amphitheatre concert Wednesday night - that the thousands of young fans in attendance continue dragging their butts out to see her when she's old and wrinkled. The 25-year-old said she has seen many people come and go in the music business and she wants to continue doing this for 40 or 50 years. Considering the disposable way singers are treated, it's unlikely Jewel will be so fortunate. But for now, she'll do just fine, judging from her near two-hour performance that was a noticeable departure from the tour she embarked on to promote her 1994 (yes it has been that long) debut CD "Pieces of You." Mostly regarded as (and sometimes dismissed as) the pretty pop-folkie with that funny tooth, Jewel wasn't opposed to occasionally ditching her acoustic guitar and strapping on an electric one during the charged second half of her set and rocking out with an edge. She's no Courtney Love, but she held her own and probably surprised some fans in the process. At the same time, she probably disappointed others who like their Jewel sparkling more subtly. The seats were less full by this point, as some fans decided not to stick around. Opening song "Near You Always" showed Jewel shrouded in nearly complete darkness, bringing a quick bit of mystique to her presence. "Hands," the wonderful first single from "Spirit," opened with new lyrics that wildly departed from the song's original words, with Jewel revealing everything from her favorite show being "Baywatch" to her announcing this was her third visit to St. Louis. She used her best/worst baby voice here. "Deep Water," another "Spirit" song, included some improvisational bits hinting Jewel may have been listening to some old school soul divas. Others songs best showcasing her quieter side included "Innocence Maintained" and "Foolish Games," treated reverentially by the crowd, which suddenly stood in rapt attention as soon as the song began. Jewel yodeled and scatted less than before, though when she did digress in that direction, she went all out. The scatting on "Who Will Save Your Soul" was actually a case of overload. Jewel shared a story of how she met her guitarist Steve Poltz while working as a waitress in a coffee shop where he performed. She said she practically stalked him for a year until he let her sing for him. She credited him with everything she knows about songwriting, and together they wrote "You Were Meant For Me," one of Jewel's biggest hits. After Poltz sang a brief, early version of "You Were Meant For Me" told from the male perspective, the more popular version followed. Through it all, Jewel seems to have come into her own as a performer, appearing more comfortable on stage than before and quickly able to switch up from girl to vamp. She even showed a sense of humor when she spoke of an interview with a German reporter. Much of this probably stems from the fact she has gotten the acting bug in how, having shot a movie. Rusted Root, meanwhile, seem condemned to a life opening for acts they're at least as talented as. It's a shame more people outside of their core audience aren't hip to their act. Rusted Root, whose latest self-titled CD was released last year, do something along of the lines of what the Dave Matthews Band does - only better and to much less acclaim. Rusted Root unleashed a slew of intoxicating, free-flowing jams. It barely took a moment before the young crowd was on its feet doing its best hippie dance imitation. Many are asking me these two questions: Q#1) Will Jewel perform regardless of the weather in West Palm Beach? A#1) I hear hurricane reports just like you, in which case I doubt the show will go on. Can't control the weather... Will she do a makeup date if its cancelled? I don't know... Lets wait & see what happens first. Q#2) Why isn't the Labor Day Jerry Lewis Telethon on Jewel's website calendar? A#2) The reason is because contrary to list & media rumors, Jewel is definitely NOT performing at this. I added more setlists to Jewel's website today. All shows listed & complete through St. Paul now (a new rocker with the band surfaced there). I saw the setlists posted to the list & most had a few mistakes. These are 100% accurate for all you tape traders & those simply interested in this minutia, like me. (The setlist link is below the "high end version" calender screen for any first time visitors.) I also put up the Christmas album title & more movie updates last night in headline news & the calendar. Also, drummer extraordinaire Brady Blade answers many EDA questions this week at our "On The Road" department. Next week bassist Tony takes the plunge. Keep sending in your concert reviews & tour experiences. Wendy has added many more of your reviews to Jewel's site & wants EDA reviews for all the current shows. Keep em coming! If I'm not too jetlagged, I'll see a bunch of you at Jason & Sonja's Living Room Concert in the San Diego area saturday night. To: jewel@smoe.org Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Well I JUST walked in the door from the concert. Traffic was terrible. It only took me 30 minutes 2 get up there and it took an hour and a half 2 get back home! N-E-Wayz, I woulda drove farther if i had 2. Great concert! And all that hype about hurricane dennis, the weather was great except 4 the heat. OK I didnt like Rusted Root and i coulnt understand a word he was saying so i just skipped his set. BUT Steve Poltz was really good. Ive never heard him b4, but hes really talented, i dont know n e 1 who can actually do things and make it look good while drinking, and drinking, and drinking..... This is his set-list: 1. Kiss My Ass 2. Dont know the title of this 1 but it was about a chair.... 3. Golds Gym Guy Song 4. Everything About You 5. Silver Lining 6. Dont know the name of this 1 either but it was about hockey 7. ABC's song 8. Little Red Corvette w/ the girl from Rusted Root 9. Star Wars song He didnt play 4 nearly long enough though, He only played about 30-45 minutes and Rusted Root (which i didnt like at all) got like an hour, i think they shouldve reversed or something. Oh-well, then came Jewel.......... What can i say, she was fantastic, i think she sounds much better in person than she does on her CD. Im just at a loss 4 words, i sang every song but 2 and the people sitting next 2 me were like wow u must really like jewel, it was kinda funny. OK well i cant really think of n e thing else 2 say about jewel except that she was great and i loved seeing her so ill give u the set-list: 1. Near You Always 2. Deep Water 3. Whats Simple Is True 4. Hands, on this song she sang the intro like 4 different ways, 1st was "if i could tell the world just 1 thing it would b that i have a little belly", then she sang "if i could tell the world just 1 thing it would b that steve poltz doesnt have a belly" and he showed us his stomach. then of course since we were the last show she sang, "if i could tell the world just 1 thing it would b that this is the last show of my tour" by this time it was getting old and she finally sang it the way it was supposed 2 b 5. Jupiter 6. YWMFM-of course steve had 2 sing his version 2 (stab the yolk w/ my god damn fork, cant believe ur taking me 2 court) then sfter he sang his version jewel sang it the right way and when it came 2 the chorus her and steve were singing cheek 2 cheek. 7. I dont know what the name of this song is. 8. Cold song-which i think is like the cutest song 9. Carnivore 10. Barcelona 11. Life Uncommon-this 1 sounded kinda gospely the way she sang it, but i liked it kinda cute and different 12. Foolish Games 13. Down So Long 14. Down 15. She said this 1 was a new song that she had just written the chorus 2, so she made up the versus as she went along 16. LMJLMA 17. WWSYS-this was THE BEST SONG of her entire performance, she did a little dance and scatted, and then at the end she did the guitar mimicking, which was pretty cool. ENCORE 18. Absence of Fear 19. Chime Bells-never heard her yodel b4 except on tape and i couldnt really hear the tape so this was a real treat. Well I'm really tired so im gonna go 2 bed now Luv-ya, Buh-Bye Heather From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Sun Aug 29 02:34:36 1999 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id CAA09933 for jewel-news-outgoing; Sun, 29 Aug 1999 02:34:08 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <199908290634.CAA09933@smoe.org> Date: Sat, 28 Aug 1999 22:50:20 -0700 (PDT) From: Elana Subject: Jewel-News: "Ride With The Devil" info for Toronto Film Fest... To: jewel@smoe.org Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hi everyone, especially those in the New York/New Jersey/CT area, Here we go again on an EDA Studio Audience!. Pay attention closely! And read this COMPLETE post before replying or you are destined to be disqualified for not following the instructions carefully. Here we go! We're inviting 50 EDAs to be our guests for Jewel's filming of "Sessions at West 54th" in NYC on Tuesday, September 14th. (The tickets are FREE & will cost these 50 EDAs nothing.) For those unfamiliar with this program, it is what I consider one of the best non-commercial music programs in the industry. It airs on PBS stations across North America. This particular program will be unique as Jewel will be performing much of the new holiday album material accompanied by her band AND a string section & chorus. For this particular event, you will need to be available by phone and/or email the next week or so to be contacted by the "Sessions" production staff. You will not be able to just "show up" & get a ticket. I realize many of you will only be able to attend if accompanied by a parent, guardian or friend. If that's the case, the person accompanying you will not be able to participate & will have to wait for you outside. Please be totally aware of this BEFORE replying. What I'm going to do is this: I'm going to put the first 100 names of EDAs who reply by tomorrow (Monday)evening on a list with their information. The names of these people will be forwarded to "Sessions" staff. THEY will personally contact the 50 EDAs (NOT ME!!) & THEY will select the 50 invitees. They will instruct you personally on anything else you'll need to know when they contact you. If they choose you, they will of course inform you what time & where to be in NYC on September 14th for the taping. I realize this isn't accommodating for everyone but that's how it is & time is limited. I'm simply doing the best I can with the parameters given. Understand that & refrain from complaining about it (to me, at least. Complain to others all you like... ;-) To be one of the 50 EDAs to join us, you must first determine 2 things now & then proceed with the instructions. They are simple yes/no answers ONLY. (Do not elaborate with any extenuating circumstances): 1.) Can I DEFINITELY be in New York City on Tuesday, September 14th? 2.) Can I be available for contact via email and phone for the next week or so? Send your 2 answers along with the following information. They need ALL THIS INFORMATION if you want to be considered!!! 1)your full name 2) age & sex 3) phone number (with area code!) 4) best email address to contact you 5) full postal mailing address Send this information to me ASAP at the following address ONLY! MrBBReply@aol.com I am the only one who will have your info & I will not share it for any purpose outside this project. If you forget to include any of the information or you reply to any of my other addresses, you will not be considered for participation, so reply only if you follow ALL the instructions above. Also, I am not at home. I'm in San Diego & I do not have time to answer questions or discuss this further. Its simple. Just follow the instructions. Both previous times we did this in NYC, many people forgot to include all the requested information in their excitement & were deleted unfortunately. So please, DO NOT FORGET ANY OF THE ABOVE INFORMATION!! If you'd enjoy attending the filming & can follow the instructions, we'd love to have you on our guest list! Over the next 48 hours, please realize this is far more insane for me than you, so don't send me questions & just read & follow the instructions carefully now. When the guest list is full, I'll contact your list manager Mike to let all EDAs know. Once you have written in, DO NOT write me again to check status. The 50 people will be contacted by the producers assistants to confirm that they can attend. Once you are confirmed, you'll then be given instructions on where to be & what time to be there. OK. Send the required info to MrBBReply@aol.com now & good luck! I hope many who want to join us can & the rest of you will watch this show on PBS. So we have to try to get fans phone, email, call concertorganizers, tvbobos, mediapress and more warner music labels in the countries to get behind Jewel. It would be proud if we can set up in each european country a couple of fans who want to be a kind of organization who want to promote Jewel. You can also try your local import record store (read: heavy metal shop). You EDAs out in the boonies who don't have import record stores near you either, can always try the mail order route. There are several companies that specialize, like Impulse Music (www.impulse-music.com). Pick up a rock magazine (esp. Metal Edge) for a nice list of import record dealers. They might even have those import CD singles you've been looking for. Happy Hunting Kiddies!!! Pete the Import CD Angel
