To: jewel@smoe.org Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hello everyone! We're back from San Diego and boy are we tired! We had such a great week out on the Left Coast and got to see so many EDA's and old friends. Thanks to everyone who attended the HGH/EDAF talk on Saturday and thanks to everyone who put their efforts into making the Gathering of Angels such a success....Lori, Jason, and Rizoule for organizing, all the great performers and everyone who attended! Some really awesome things came out of our trip which were announced by Lenedra at the Gathering, but have yet to be mentioned on this list. First and foremost, Higher Ground for Humanity has made a most generous donation of $5,000 to the EveryDay Angels Foundation! This will certainly help us increase our activities in the EDA community. We have also discussed partnering on some upcoming projects....details will be announced as they become available. We are very excited about this partnership with Higher Ground for Humanity and the synergy between our two groups. The Acts of EveryDay Kindness scrapbook was also presented to Lenedra on Saturday. She assured us that Jewel would get it that same day. We should have some pictures on our website soon, as well as a digital version of the Scrapbook. Thanks again to everyone! We look forward to seeing more and more of you at upcoming events! Subject: Jewel-News: FINAL PLANS for Houston,TX gathering (7/10) To: "'Jewel list'" --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Listen up TX/Houston area EDA's!!! The time has come for our FIRST TEXAS BIG ASS GATHERING!!! :-) This will be held the day of the Jewel concert, July 10, at the Woodlands Pavilion, just north of Houston, TX. Most of you who plan on going already have some idea of what this is all about (I hope) from the updates that have been coming to the Jewel list the past month or so. This past Saturday a group of 5 EDA's (the unofficial Big Ass Gathering planning committee) all met up in Austin to party...I mean, to make the final plans for this gathering. Read Luna's letter if you want to know what else occurred...the post with the subject of something like "uh oh, Luna's getting excited." Somehow we did manage to come up with a plan for this Saturday! :-) So here it goes....pay close attention. ********************************************************************** As mentioned in the update letters, the plan for having a BBQ at a park WILL happen. The park is NORTHSHORE PARK. This is only about 5 minutes We are asking everyone to bring either a 2-liter bottle of soda water or punch, or a bag of chips (the large size), or some cookies. If you want to bring chips and cookies, or chips and soda water, or soda water and cookies, or all 3, feel free to. We will have BBQ'd hot dogs courtesy of Dennis, Amy, and Luna. We'll supply the mayonnaise, mustard, and hot dog buns, so if you'd like something else, it's up to you to bring it. Those of you who are vegetarians, feel free to bring whatever you like. We're going to have a very informal picnic, just hang out, get to know one another, maybe play some games, and for sure everyone WILL get their chance to rope the one and only "Woody" the plywood cow...who by the way, has his very own JEWEL autograph on his nose. Yes, it's the real thing! Jewel signed this at the VH-1 Storytellers taping. The cow belongs to Dennis, so thank him for bringing it. We all got some practice at it this past Saturday in Austin...I've never roped a plywood cow before and it only took me 3 or 4 trys before I got it...so it's not all that difficult. Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk There are also ducks at this park, so we'll have plenty of bread for those who want to feed the ducks. And there's a playground for those who want to...oh, nevermind. And for those who like to fish, you can bring your fishing poles and fish out of the lake. Parents are welcome to come too!!! This is for everyone, all EDA's and their friends and families. We're going to have a GREAT time! We're not sure exactly how long we'll stay at the park, but it will be at least for a few hours. The concert begins at 8:00pm, and I believe the gates will open at 7:00pm. We will all meet at the gate of the pavilion (the NORTH gate) at approximately 7:00pm. The NORTH gate is the one to the left side of the big hill, looking at the backside of the hill. This is for those EDA's who can't make it to the park earlier...please join us at the pavilion's NORTH gate at 7:00pm! Of course, we all know you WILL make it to the park, right? :-) OK, now the important stuff... **** DIRECTIONS TO GET TO NORTHSHORE PARK: Take I-45 to the Woodlands Parkway exit. If you're coming fom the south, you'll exit onto the feeder road, loop around, then go back over I-45. If you're coming from the north, you'll just exit onto the feeder road and curve to the right onto Woodlands Parkway. Once on Woodlands Parkway, you'll cross a bridge that goes over Grogan's Mill Rd. Then you'll go over another bridge in which you'll see Lake Woodlands off to your right...and some really BIG houses! After that bridge, you'll make a right at the next intersection. This is PANTHER CREEK DR. You'll be taking EAST Panther Creek Dr., which is to the right. There is also a sign that says Northshore Park ---> , so it's pretty easy to find. Drive down Panther Creek till you get to the first stop sign. Again, you'll see another sign that says Northshore Park ---> So take another right onto this road, which is LAKE WOODLANDS DR. Drive to the end of this road (it come to a dead-end), and you'll see a sign that says NORTHSHORE PARK. You're there! :-) You'll make yet another right into the park itself. The parking lot is up front, to your left. Look for all the crazy people trying to rope a plywood cow...that'll be us. Or maybe some of us will have on Jewel shirts, etc. If you can't get there by 2:00pm, that's ok. You'll just starve then...just joking. There should be plenty of food even for late arrivers. But please try to be there at least by 2:00pm if you can...the sooner, the better. :-) We may decide to go our own ways around 4:00 or 5:00, until we all meet up again at the NORTH GATE of the pavilion at 7:00pm. Some of you may want to go shopping at the mall, sleep, or whatever. On to the show itself now! STEVE POLTZ -- 8:00pm till ? JEWEL KILCHER -- Approx. 9:00pm till ??? Yay! What a great show it was!!!! :-) Ok, now the plans for after the show... MORE IMPORTANT STUFF! After the show is over, we plan on going somewhere to grab a bite to eat. No one has to do this, but you'll be missing out if you don't. We haven't quite decided yet where we'll go, but I think we'll just take a vote when we all meet up again after the show...so if you want to have some input in the decision, then be there! :-) We'll meet up again at the NORTH GATE after the show. Who knows when this will be...I'm guessing Jewel will play till at least 10:30pm...maybe later. At this time, we will all go eat...wherever we decide based on the voting. After we eat, I'm sure many of us will go back to the Official EDA Hotel for the gathering...the La Quinta Inn at the corner of I-45 and Research Forest Dr...you can't miss it. If anyone would like to come back to the hotel and hang out, you're welcome to. :-) So that's pretty much the plans. If anyone has any questions, then please write me as soon as possible so I can answer it before the weekend. Below is a list of names of the EDA's who have told me they're coming to the concert. If you're NOT on the list, and know you are going to both the concert AND gathering, then PLEASE WRITE ME SOON! So we'll know how much food to buy. If you're not going to the gathering, but going to the concert, WRITE ME and TELL ME this too. And lastly, those of you who are ON the list, and know you are attending the gathering at the park, WRITE ME! We need to get a count to determine the amount of food we bring. And please remember to bring something to drink, and/or chips, and/or cookies. We'll have a large icechest already there for the ice. And we'll have cups, plates, and paper towels too. This will also be the beginning of many more Houston/TX future EDA gatherings! We know you guys are out there...come to this and prove it to us! If you don't have tickets to the concert, but still would like to attend the gathering at the park, you're certainly welcome to. :-) Hope to see everyone there this Saturday!!!! * For a map of the area, park location, etc., go to this webpage and click on the "Parks" text at the lower left corner, under the MAPS section. I didnt meat any other edas there, i left on monday morning to fly to seattle(my family and i took a big trip to see the area). We had 5TH ROW SEATS!!!! I was like 7 seats from the middle. The stage was setup just like what i read from the fisrt show. Jewel was wearing a blue tshirt and a skirt that looked a little like an apron. Anyways,,, The Setlist NOTE: This is what i could remember. They are not all in perfect order but itried to put themin oorder as best as i could. Near You Always- she sang the first verse a capella Deep Water- I dont remember if this was solo or with the band Whats Simple is True-dont remember if this was solo or with either. Hands- This one was with the band. Somewhere arounf this point she told a story about how she had woken up in a good mood that morning and had decided to go excersise. She realized that she didnt have any tennis shoes so she had to go get some. When she went to the gym there was this woman on the treadmill who looked like the bionic woman or something.it was hilarious. Jupiter- the "new version" Cold Song-solo. after she was done and the crowd was cheering she said that she was glad that theyenjoyed the deeper stuff like she did. She told a story about how she recently was doing an interview in Germany. This is the best i cna remember it: (she did a hilarious imitation of the german guy, unfortunately i cant convey it on the computer) Interviewer: So, Jewel. Is that your real name? Jewel: Yes it is. Interviewer: Jewel, Jewel: Kilcher. Kilcher is my last name. Interviewer: Sounds German,no? Jewel: actually its Swiss. Interviewer: Jewel, May I ask you a question? Jewel: This is an interview. Interviewer: In your song, Innocence Maintained, why do write 'Hitler loved little blue eyed boys and it drove him to hate'? Jewel: Ask your parents or get a book about it. Interviewer: Why do you say in your song, 'Nature has a funny way of breaking what does not bend'? What is funny about it? I donot understand. Jewel: I didnt mean haha funny i meant funny as in"isnt it ironic" So then she plays Innoncence Maintained solo Barcelona- with band YWMFM-with. did a funny thing where she held the strings for steve and he played them. LIfe Uncommon- with band. she got almost the whole crowd on its feet and clapping for this. Foolish Games.-Just with the keyboard Down So Long- with band. the crowd liked this one too. Race Car Driver- with band. this was the first time ive heard this. it rocked Down- with. having no angelfood except for a few import singles, i hadnt heard it Love Me Just Leave Me Alone - with. it took me forever to figure out what it was. i hadnt heard this before WWSYS- VERY long. the bass opening had to have been three min at least. She did the thing where doug has to imitate her voice. Everyone left the stage and they gave the picks to some people in the fornt. My brother GOT THE DRUMSTICK!!! Encore Absence of fear Angel standing by- told how it was a lullaby she wrote herself while living in her van. Chimebells- she yodelled really fast towards the end i didnt realize it was possible to do so so fast. I thought it was a great show. I hope i might can see her when she comes closer (note the er) to me. also, any sc edas out there? or am i the only one? This is a very worthy cause & one hopefully all of you will contribute to, if you can. Thanks! Also, I've updated the 1999 Setlist Guide on Jewel's website. It now has every 1999 Jewel setlist through last week's California shows. I've continued including accurate setlists for all of Steve Poltz's sets & the VH1 Storytellers taping setlist is up as well. If you're into this stuff, stop by www.jeweljk.com & have a look. (From the main navigation page, go to the calendar. At bottom of the calendar screen, you'll find the setlist link.) All these things are viewable on the high end version. The low end version is usually delayed so I encourage anyone who's still using a pre-4.0 browser to upgrade if at all possible. It makes a huge difference on enjoying Jewel's site as well as most of the web these days. Many of the questions I'm recieving about Jewel's next album, the recent Merle Haggard sessions, Jupiter single, Woodstock are all answered on Jewel's site under headline news. You can also find out more about Rusted Root, who will be joining the tour soon, as they're our newest "featured artist". The calendar is totally up to date & a lot of new tour merchandise (including the newset tour t-shirts) are available for viewing & purchase at the webstore. Also, congatulations to the 5 winners on our last contest for free pairs of tickets. I know a few were EDAs. We'll be announcing another different contest soon! Stay tuned! It was my first concert and obviously my first times seeing Jewel perform live, and as everyone says, it is amazing. Steve Poltz came out and introduced himself to the audience. The audience seemed very cold during his first few songs. After three or so the audience had warmed up to him. This is was first time I'd ever seen him sing and I thought he was very good, as did the audience, "One Left Shoe" was sold out by the end of the night. After the 15 minute intermission, Jewel came out. She started out by singing "Near You Always" and followed with "Deep Water" as she has in most of her shows. She than asked if anyone was from Payson, she told the audience she was born there and concieved in a moment of Mormon lust. I won't bore you with the setlist, she sangs songs from spirit like "What Simple Is True", "Hands", "Down So Long" and "Life Uncommon". She also sang the new version of "Jupiter", and asked everyone to request it 15 times. She sang the three singles from "Pieces Of You" and also "Morning Song". She sang "Grey Matter" and "Down". I hope that she will release a live album with that song on it, she really can rock out. Her cd is so mellow compared to her live. She also told stories about the German Interviewer, instead of telling the story of the drugbust, she only mentioned that she had a crush on Steve and they became good friends and wrote the song together. During "YWMFM" Jewel and Steve would stare into each others eyes and sing the chrous together. The second time she said to Steve," I got over my crush on you along time ago", it was very funny. She seems so serious in interviews, I didn't relieze she was so funny. Her encores were "Absence Of Fear", "Angels Standing By" and "Chime Bells". I thought the show was excellent. It surpassed my expectations. My only regret is that the show was only 3/4 full, I hope that Jewel will come back on her next tour. Here we go! In a message dated 7/7/99 10:40:47 PM, poyjk@hotmail.com writes: <> Nedra is not singing backup at Jewel's concerts. Occasionally in 1999, she has joined Jewel for the encore (in New Zealand, for instance) and sang the bonus track on Spirit (This Little Bird). In the past she has often performed duets with Jewel on various songs. For complete & accurate setlists from this year (including notes on where Nedra has joined Jewel), visit the 1999 setlist guide at Jewel's website. I'm not going to personally get into this big controversy about Steve Poltz, but in case reality matters to anyone, there was NO ACTUAL BEER in those gift boxes Steve gave to those daughters of friends onstage in San Diego & Irvine. Regarding the reports of an August album release & July book release: Stores talking about a new album release are simply alluding to the buzz about Jewel's Christmas album scheduled for later this year. Jewel's next book is not coming out this month. It'll be out next year. Many online book stores have it listed already, but again thats just a "temporary place holder" until it is published. If you try to actually order it from these places, you won't be able to, because it has not been published. Now, onto the movie....Although the movie may pop up for review at various film festivals (like recently posted about as premiering at a Toronto film festival in September), the general release date to movie theaters has not been decided yet. As soon as that date is decided, I promise to let everyone know both here and on Jewel's website. And finally....Yes, Jewel herself mentioned on stage in Salt Lake City Tuesday night that she was born in Payson, Utah, when actually she was born at Payson Hospital in St George, Utah. All I can say is that on the day she was born, she was still quite young, so her memory may be a bit hazy, hehehe... ;-) Hope that helps with some of the general confusion & wrong info flying around the internet lately. A little new info for you all - Steve's has apparently raised their price from previous years, but don't fret, it's only another dollar per day - making the campsite $6 per day/person now. Also on Mike's page is the list of items you may wish to bring camping. Don't forget the annual tape grab bag - for anyone not familiar with it - all it entails is making a compilation of your favorite artists that you'd like to introduce to fellow EDA's :-) Also, as I believe was already mentioned by the infamous Dennis Harris, there will also be a Jewel Song parody contest, so don't forget that :-) Directions etc... can also be found on the gathering page. Please refer to Mike's page for this and all other info before emailing me with questions, not that I mind, but time is very limited right now :-) Hope to see lots of new faces :-) Bearsville '99 web page found at http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup/bv/bv99.htm Tammy :-) The Edamommy :-) From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Sat Jul 10 12:59:04 1999 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id MAA17647 for jewel-news-outgoing; Sat, 10 Jul 1999 12:58:57 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <199907101658.MAA17647@smoe.org> Date: Sat, 10 Jul 1999 12:49:34 -0400 To: jewel@smoe.org From: Mike Connell Subject: Jewel-News: Woodstock 99 - rumor of possible cancellation is NOT true Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hi folks :-) I myself heard this "rumor report" on the radio yesterday, and about a half a dozen emails have come in to me and jewel@smoe.org asking "what gives"? I didn't have an answer, until I just found this new information on the www.woodstock.com web site. (text below) The event is safe and sound. Mike :-) Just a silly rumor - Woodstock 99 is in no danger. Erroneous reports of possible cancellation are just plain wrong. By Woodstock.com There have been erroneous, though widespread reports alleging that the Woodstock festival is in danger of being called off because "we have not met certain county deadlines" . It's definitely not true, so don't worry about it. Here's a statement by Producer Michael Lang: "The reality of planning an event as large as Woodstock 99 is that there innumerable details and conditions that must be attended to and addressed at each step of the festival planning process. Nonetheless, our entire staff has consistently worked diligently to meet each and every condition required of them either in advance, on time or as close to the proposed deadline as possible - without jeopardizing the safety, quality, or integrity of the event." "The county has in no way, shape or form threatened the cancellation of the Woodstock 99 festival and any unresolved issues are currently being addressed. We continue to work with Oneida County officials to meet every condition and deadline required of us," Lang concluded. And the county concurs. Oneida County Executive Ralph J. Eannace, Jr. said in an official statement, "We have been talking with Woodstock officials. We expect to resolve all permit issues quickly. We are looking forward to a safe and successful event." You're Invited! To: jewel@smoe.org Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hi to all EDAs that are planning (or considering) attending this years Bearsville Reunion next weekend, I have what I hope will be some exciting news for you! We've been wanting to do an HGH/EDA discussion event on the East Coast & we've decided to do it in Woodstock next weekend so Bearsville Reunionites can easily attend. :-) As many of you know, Nedra (Jewel's mom/manager) stopped by the SoCal EDA Gathering on June 26th & spoke to the EDAs about Higher Ground For Humanity. We would have enjoyed expanding that into a discussion with the EDAs, but didn't because we promised not to interfere with all the wonderful performers already scheduled that day. This time we'd like to do a similar thing but devote the time to direct discussion with the EDAs. So....here's the plan: Next Saturday afternoon , July 17th, we will be holding an HGH workshop/picnic during the Bearsville Reunion. Nedra, Shane (Jewel's older brother) & I are trying to secure The Bearsville Theater lobby (or outside if its nice) to conduct an HGH workshop & picnic that you are invited to attend. Nedra will talk about HGH & then we'll have a discussion with the EDAs on how you can "Be the difference that makes a difference" in your own lives. We have many questions for you, probably far more than you have of us, believe it or not! We'd love for this Bearsville Reunion 99 to be the beginning of that ongoing exchange. We'll supply a bunch of food & we'll make a nice afternoon of it. We'd certainly enjoy having all Bearsville Reunion attendees join us. I'd also like to invite any others who'd like to attend to simply come down for that afternoon, even if you were'nt planning on going to the reunion. Everyone is welcome! We thought doing this next weekend at the original Jewelstock site was too good to pass up, since so many EDAs would already be in the area. So....here's what I'd like you to do if you'd like to attend. Please contact Tammy, who is already co-ordinating the folks attending next weeks reunion, if you'd like to join us. Write to: BRSVL99@aol.com Please let Tammy know if you'd like to attend the Bearsville Reunion, the HGH workshop or both. That will help us determine how much food to buy for the picnic & how many to expect. If you need more information about the reunion, directions, etc, please go to Mike's BEARSVILLE REUNION 99 website at: http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup/bv/bv99.htm We still have not secured the Bearsville Theater, but if worse comes to worse, we'll do it somewhere nearby. I'll certainly keep you all informed as the week progresses. We'll determine exact time & location in the next day or two. We'd love to have you join us & this will be a great opportunity to learn more about HGH, The EDAFoundation & how you can participate. It's a shame this upset some people & I can assure you it was not meant to do this. I'm sure they were simply looking for a quick vote on the t-shirt design & then decided to give away some stickers, too. The point I want to make is that JMerch are real people & extremely nice people & they want to be in an enjoyable business AND make their customers happy. However, I personally am not JMerch, nor are the EDAs, so if & when a problem occurs, even one like this sticker thing, you have a much better recourse than complaining to me or each other. It's called customerservice@jeweljk.com. These are cool people and they can benefit from knowing how you feel about promotions & contests, etc. They also can actually consider what you have to say, if you take the time to write them. We're all learning how best to do things as we go along, so rather than simply complain to people who can't help you, try writing the address above & talk to people who can possibly help & are willing to listen. Sound reasonable? OK. Onto a few questions about the new website contest: << How big is the Jewel print?>> It's fairly big actually. It's printed on 22X30 acid free 100% bamboo pulp. (Almost all fine art lithography is on acid free paper which prevents discoloration over time.) <> Yes, Jewel personally signed these limited edition numbered prints. <> Jewel wrote: "The nights are too long & too dark without you..." <> Everyone with website access on this planet that can fill out the entry form, yes. ;-) Onto other miscellaneous stuff: << Will Jupiter be release as a single in North America?>> It's already been released to radio which is the standard procedure here. In most cases singles are only released commercially (in stores) in other world markets. When that happens, they can be purchased as imports here. <> I don't know, but if I hear anything, you'll be the first to know! <> Now <> Plans are to have it out for the holidays. <> "Pieces Of You" & "Pieces Of Me" are two completely different unrelated songs. I was surprised this question came in! POY was written in 1994 & POM is a rarely played love song from around a year before that. "Down So Long" & "Down" are two completely different songs. "DSL" was written back in 1994 during the Innerchange Coffeehouse era. "Down" was written during the 1997 Tiny Lights Tour. (You can see the lyrics to both these songs at the lyrics page on Jewel's site.) "Do You" & "Do You Want To Play" are two completely different songs. "Do You" is the song on the Spirit CD & "DYWTP" is a pounding new rock song written during rehearsals on the Australian Tour earlier this year. More info about the HGH Workshop on Saturday soon. You're Invited!! To: jewel@smoe.org Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Good Morning All, More good news regarding the HGH Workshop during the 3rd annual Bearsville Reunion (BV99) this weekend! As per our plan, we've secured the Bearsville Theater for Saturday. So we will be conducting the HGH Workshop at the original site of Jewelstock! :-) The workshop will begin at 11:00am this coming Saturday morning (July 17th) at The Bearsville Theater. We'll begin with Nedra (Jewel's mom/manager) & Shane (Jewel's older brother) talking about HGH & then we'll continue the discussion with all EDAs who attend. Following this, we'll provide food so we can all have a nice little picnic & some socializing time with The EDAs. (You are welcome to bring more food & non alchoholic beverages if you like! - We could probably use a few coolers, too.) Please try to be at The Bearsville Theater a little early so we can start on time. Plan accordingly if you are driving in from out of town. This should be a great time for all who participate. Several other HGH people will also be attending as well as several people from the J-Team. Please join us! For those who need previous info, directions, instructions or have no idea what I'm talking about, my original post (now updated) about all this follows. It includes all instructions & everything else you need to know. We look forward to seeing many new & familiar faces! Seeya soon, MrBB Subj: MrBB-HGH Workshop at Bearsville 99! You're Invited! From: MRBB earlier this week (but now updated) Hi to all EDAs that are planning (or considering) attending this years Bearsville Reunion next weekend, I have what I hope will be some exciting news for you! It will be held in The Bearsville Theater lobby (or outside if its nice) beginning at 11:00am. You are invited to attend! Nedra will talk a bit about HGH & then we'll have a discussion with the EDAs on how you can "Be the difference that makes a difference" in your own lives. If you need more information about the reunion, directions to The Bearsville Theater, etc, please go to Mike's BEARSVILLE REUNION 99 website at: http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup/bv/bv99.htm We'd love to have you join us as this will be a great opportunity to learn more about HGH, The EDAFoundation & how you can participate. Nedra, Shane, The EDAF Board, AmyJo & I look forward to spending a nice afternoon with you in Bearsville/Woodstock! Seeya there! Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"; format=flowed Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hi folks :-) This is just a reminder about the Celebrity Deathmatch tonight on MTV. One match features Jewel vs Alanis! For the particulars, below is what Alan posted about this last Friday. (I am not sure when it repeats, but you can check the MTV site at www.mtv.com ) Mike :-) P.S. Go clay-Jewel go! Make Playdoh mush out of Alanis! <> Well, some of you will find this show gruesome, violent, shameless & repulsive and some will find it hilarious, ridiculous, unbelievable & addictive but regardless, Jewel has finally made it to MTV's "Celebrity Deathmatch"! For those unfamiliar with this particular program, it's a completely "over the top" claymation (animated) take on World Wide Wrestling where two (or more) celebrity contestants fight to the gruesome death for domination. Jewel will fight Alanis Morrissette next Thursday night July 15th at 9PM EST on the MTV Network. Just so you get the idea, the other two deathmatch's that particular evening include Tommy Lee (Pamela Anderson Lee's husband & drummer for Motley Crue) vs. Ron Jeremy (most ubiquitous porn movie star) AND The Three Stooges vs. The Three Tenors. - MrBB From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Fri Jul 16 01:04:40 1999 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id BAA12679 for jewel-news-outgoing; Fri, 16 Jul 1999 01:04:01 -0400 (EDT) Received: from imo16.mx.aol.com (imo16.mx.aol.com [198.81.17.6]) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/daemon-mode-relay2) with ESMTP id XAA09467; Thu, 15 Jul 1999 23:07:35 -0400 (EDT) From: ABershaw@aol.com Received: from ABershaw@aol.com by imo16.mx.aol.com (IMOv20.21) id 6EXHa14724 (8019); Thu, 15 Jul 1999 22:57:52 -0400 (EDT) Message-ID: <4e64c998.24bff9a2@aol.com> Date: Thu, 15 Jul 1999 22:57:38 EDT Subject: Jewel-News: MrBB-HGH/EDA Workshop Update! A few HGH & Jewel Management people are also flying in & are also looking forward to meeting & talking with more of you directly. Everything will continue as planned on Saturday at 11AM at The Bearsville Theater in Woodstock,NY. Shane will tell you about HGH, we have some videos to show you & then we'll begin the first of what I hope are many direct idea exchanges with EDAs. Following this will be a picnic there at the original Jewelstock site with food provided. (always an enticement for me, hehe!) For all other details & directions, visit the BV99 site at: http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup/bv/bv99.htm I hope this update doesn't deter anyone from joining us. Everyone is welcome! Anyone interested in learning more about Jewel & Nedra's HGH Foundation, The EDAFoundation & how you can get involved, as well as simply having an enjoyable time with many great EDAs should join us! Many of the most mysterious & interesting people on this list will be there! I hope that means you! BRING FOOD TO THE JEWEL SHOWS! then we found our seats. i have to say, even though they weren't on the floor, i enjoyed the view. i was on the 5th row the night before, so it was nice to see the musicians from above. amber and derrick were on the oppite side of the arena from us, so we sat an looked at each other through our binoculars! waving, peace signs! that was fun! steve's set was short and he cut off the last part of of abc's of love! but hey, i could see the bourbon street signs flickering in his eyes. jewel looked glamorous: shiny crimson leather pants, tight black tank top, kiss me makeup, and big ass clonker shoes. she adjusts her posture according to what persona she is employing. three nights of completely a different jewel. the show was sharp, focused, and slightly eerie. only in new orleans would there be carney-looking men selling cotton candy during the show. and not only selling it, but yelling "COTTON CANDYYYYYY" during the songs! her voice was the clearest and surest i have seen yet. needless to say, just because i was sitting up in the bleechers doesn't mean i wasn't going to dance and act like a maniac. all of the people sitting around us were so blaise! of course i had on my wings, and so whenever they would flash the light we would stand up and jump around and amber jumped up on the other side and we'd wave and scream. now, the best part of the show was fast approaching. she gets to the flexible slot in her set where she has been playing songs like grey matter, sibtw, fly to me angel, etc. and she brings little brother atz out with his "bluesharp." that's when the impossible happened. she said "this is a new song (yadda yadda yadda), it's called CLEVELAND." my heart stopped because i my first thought is, ohhh, noo, she has written a new song named cleveland and she will never sing "you're in cleveland today" again. and then my heart was jump-started by amy BANGING ON ME LIKE A MADWOMAN! and sure enough, it started. and it was so beautiful and amy and i were acting like rapid fairies and all the little sullen new orleans people around us looked at us like we really were trolls or something! [how do they know the words, jewel just said this was a new song] and for the rest of the show i was beaming! in the encore, she played a true new song. it was beautiful with that rawness and ripeness that only just written songs can have. it was very old school jewel, too, sort of like the face of love or something from that period. during the yodelling we ran down to the railing and a security guard laughed at my wings. and then the show was over. and i realized that i wasn't going to see a jewel show the next night :-( i was getting used to being a groupie! so after trying to find lee after the show (and not succeeding) but meeting a couple of EDA's we got back in our plummy van. and see, dennis has this little problem.......he is addicted to popping hoods. yes, it is true, four or five times in a row. he would get in the van, tell us we were leaving, then pop the hood. get out, push it back down, get back in, tell us we were leaving, THEN POP THE HOOD. over and over. it was hysterical! after freshening up, we headed down to bourbon. and well, within three minutes of parking the van, i see this wavering gilligan's hat coming up toward me. IT WAS STEVE AND HE HAD ON AMIAS' HAT! doug was with him too, and so steve gave us hugs and he thought i looked familiar and so i reminded him of hot dog fest a couple of years ago where he donated to my airplane fund. he remembered and asked me if i got home ok.........uhhh he had already been drinking obviously! amias, i told him all about you and how you wanted to make sure steve's head was specially protected and he said, MAN THAT GUY IS SO COOL, I LOVE THESE HATS AND NOW I WILL WEAR IT DURING WWSYS WHENEVER I REMEMBER! so he invited all of us to a private party at the freakin' house of blues! so we went in and hung out with the bank in the house of blues. there was this uhhh "groovy" room upstairs with purdy colors and soft couches. we were just getting comfortable when the bar hopping began. so dennis and steve walk down the street with their arms around one another, past the cops who are busting up a fight, talking about jewel of course (of all things to talk about with steve:-).......and well, ok, i was jealous that dennis was hogging steve! so suddenly steve asks me again if i got home ok from hot dog fest and planted a big kiss on my ear. so i wasn't so jealous anymore. then we went to the dungeon where i couldn't get in because i won't be 21 for a month and a half. but that is where i got tied up by this uhhh, sexy lady (?????) in the torture chamber. i really can't wait to see the pictures. i have this fear that they are tacked to a tree at bearsville as i type. and then we went to the lucky bar, where i got kicked out again and watched everyone have fun from outside. amber and steve were playing video poker and steve kept running into things. it was hilarious. but i felt like the little lost stray outside. this huge homeboy came up to me and asked me if my mommy let me stay out this late! wahhhhhh :-( he ended up being really nice, though and he told me not to walk more that 4 blocks in that direction, even he didn't go there. i asked him how growing up in new orleans was and he showed me his missing tooth and said, well, i grew up in the good part of the city. he kept me company until dennis and derrick came out and we went to deja vu to get po boys and fried cheese. i couldn't even go in there! urrrrg. so we were finally getting tired and the gang was getting loonier as the minutes ticked, so steve came out to bid us farewell. that's when it happened. steve kissed me! yes, genuine drunken kiss on the lips! and then he went on to kiss dennis too, but he wouldn't do it twice. he looked like he genuinely wanted to have breakfast with us, but i would see the hangover demon already springing from his head. he asked me once more if i made it home ok from california and kissed my cheek and amy got a picture of it! so now i can die because steve kissed me and amias can die because steve has two of his hats! :-) seriously, steve is so genuine, and more than worth your time to talk to, even if for a minute or two. he made it very clear that it isn't that jewel is mean or unthankful, she is just tired all the time from working so hard and it makes her nervous to meet fans after the show. he also said that jewel is the most loyal person he knows, and that she would do anything for your friends. at one point dennis suggested maybe she has high standards for her friends. then steve said, no, she doesn't have high standards-- that she is loyal to those who are loyal to her. so, i don't think jewel will be dumping steve to save her reputation from the tremulous bottle. new orleans is beautiful because it is old and dirty. the next day 5 edas walked around the quarter a bit and dined on a delicious chicken salad and took a few last pictures. i bought a long black feather boa, and dennis and amy bought---ooops, maybe i shouldn't say, but it is especially used for SEAN HOOKS! it is sad to split up EDA gatherings and i had seen at least one EDA a day for about a week and a half. but of course, we bit our farewells in the pouring rain. we are always crazy like that :-) bye amy, bye dennis, have fun in the big easy. and then amber, derrick and i hit the road. well not quite. dennis had a plan to make me go to bearsville even though he knows i am already in the hole! he stole my bag. super important stuff in my bag that i wouldn't be human without. and he brought it up to their hotel room! i just happened to notice it wasn't in the van before we left town. so we had to convince the hotel keeper we were everyday angels so he would let us into the room to get my bag. he did let us in and i had to leave dennis a nasty note. that whippersnapper! the drive back was fun, although i thought we were going across the louisiana boundary when we were just an hour outside of new orleans. but that is ok. i was a little bit messed up from all the excitement. derrick and amber are completely kick ass and i wish texas wasn't so damn big so we could hang out more often. at ambe'rs we listened to the tapes and screamed during love me just leave me alone (terrific version), where she said midgets on accident and of course cleveland. i hope we didn't freak her mommy out too bad. then derrick had to leave and we were dwindled down to 2. amber read her beautiful poetry and some journal writings to me and finally we went to sleep. and the next morning the pink tint was gone and i went home and faced my terrible debt. too bad i didn't win the lotto or i would just follow jewel around all summer and meet all of you! and that was the big ass tx-louisiana road trip. love as alway the beer fairy, LUNA From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Tue Jul 20 18:03:52 1999 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id SAA19065 for jewel-news-outgoing; Tue, 20 Jul 1999 18:03:10 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <199907202203.SAA19065@smoe.org> Date: Tue, 20 Jul 1999 15:48:39 EDT From: CloudWingz@aol.com To: jewel-news@smoe.org Subject: Jewel-News: Jewel on Making the Video Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hey Angels! We learned a lot from those who attended the workshop. That was really just a beginning primarily focused on educating Jewel's management & HGH staff on what EDAs value in life. This will help us develop HGH programs & to better work with EDAs in the future. Determining what you personally value in life & being that in your everyday life is what the "Be The Difference That Makes A Difference" HGH program is all about. We thank everyone who spent time discussing this (&/or just hangin out) with us in Woodstock! I'm really writing today to finally announce my retirement as "MrBB-InfoBoy" from the Jewel lists. As I announced back when we first began revamping Jewel's website last year, I planned on eliminating my day to day activities here, so that I can better concentrate on Jewel's vast recording archive work & developement of Jewel & Nedra's fan related projects. This is where my primary interests & responsibilities are and thats what I prefer to do from here on out. Basically, all fun stuff! :-) Providing accurate information to you is still important to me, but we've got Jewel's website rolling now & it's all there. For those who may not know this, I also personally write & update the calendar, headline news, lyric pages, setlist pages and rumor/truth areas on Jewel's website. So you can easily find accurate information from me, right there, 24 hours a day. My content there already covers much of what I was doing here for the past three years. Rather than spending so much time duplicating that content here and then answering the endless email that inevitably generates, I feel my time is better spent on the increased archive related work, development of new fan comunications, related HGH & EDAFoundation projects & enjoying my life. I also want to get back to my Future Folklore series & continue to develop that. I will still occasionally be in direct contact with all of you when the J-Team has future events or activities that include the EDAs or related correspondance. However, starting with the recent "Bits & Baubles" promo CD info, all basic news & all calendar related information will be on Jewel's website exclusively from now on. It's now primarily up to you to check the website & inform each other & answer each other's questions. With so many knowledgable people here, that should be extremely easy to do. The J-Team has many plans to include EDAs in our future activities & I'd prefer to primarily limit my list posts to these enjoyable areas now. For your convenience, when I do post these things from Jewel Management, I will continue to put "MrBB" in the subject line, so its easier to find amongst the mountain of other email many of you recieve every day. We'll also be developing some new "official fan communications" avenues over the next several months, so that we can better work & communicate with both The EDAs & the enormous global fanbase into the millennium. We're not particularly interested in having a "typical fan club" & we'll be exploring alternative approaches that will be more interesting & personally rewarding for all of us. We also have several great new website features, including lots of new multimedia & tour stuff, coming very soon. You'll hopefully find a lot of laughs soon, too! Humor is a significant side of Jewel (& all of us!) that is sorely lacking from almost all Jewel content websites. I also just finished updating the setlist page today. All of Jewel's & Steve's 1999 Tour setlists are up & complete, with the exception of the last two shows, which I haven't gotten to yet. (see setlists link below the calendar.) When major things of interest are added to Jewel's website, I'll try to post a quick note alerting the EDAs, but it's best to simply check it yourself if you want to always be up to date. This list has been an amazing & challenging experience! I've learned an incredible amount from The EDAs over the past four years, not to mention making many friends in the process. There's unlimited potential within this special community & I hope it continues to be an enjoyable experience for everyone. Seeya at Jewel's shows occasionally, future EDA/J-Team events & on the official website at www.jeweljk.com. Say hello if you're at the upcoming NYC, Holmdel, Mansfield or Hartford shows. As the second leg of the US Tour begins, please remember to bring canned food to all Jewel's shows for the "Rock & Wrap It Up" food drive. We have three full cars convoying at this time, and expect to pull into Woodstock (along with Woody, the Plywood Cow) around 2 AM Friday morning... For those who are arriving seperately, here's the best bet for meeting up with our group: At 3 AM Friday morning, we'll pop over to the "camper relations area" (which is between the west stage and the showers on the lower left hand side of the official Woodstock map) and hang around for a while. Just walk up and ask if anyone there is an EDA -- odds are you'll find us soon. If we miss you then, we'll repeat the rendevous plan again at noon and midnight on Friday. We hope to pitch the EDA TENT CITY around the "line" between the map words "THE" and "TREES", so you might stumble across us there, too... Jewel forgot the words to You Were Meant For Me on the second verse in the middle of the concert. Had to sing it to herself about 5 times and then Steve Poltz was helping her out a little. Then she finally got it and barely got through the song dying in laughter. It was awesome! She did a new verson of Jupiter, the one that the video has. She debuet at least 2 new songs, possibly a 3rd, I don't remember. They were the most awseome, hard rocking songs in the world! She screamed louder and jammed harder than Courtney Love! Awesome way to start to close the set. She also did a rock out verson of Love Me, Just Leave Me Alone. She ended her set with the most kick ass verson of Down So Long. She is gonna blow the brains out of Woodstock! She jammed for like 7-10 minutes towards the end. She did this awesome scatting type thing with the electric guitar. She would sing, he would imitate the voice on electric guitar. It was awesome!!!! Jewel then came back on stage and did a song with the keyboard and she finished the night off with a solo on the guitar. This concert was one of the best I've ever been to. I've seen Pearl Jam twice, one time 10 feet away from the stage in 1996 and this ranks up there with that. I knew before what a great singer/songwriter she was, but seeing her live just puts her on a whole new level. I love the way that she can just change her voice so easily. Like she had some bluesy songs, some rock 'n roll, and just some quiet, angelic stuff. She certainly puts on a great show. I just felt bad when people would call things out during the quiet songs like Grey Matter and Absense of Fear. Those songs seem so personal and while Jewel was singing people would scream "I Love You Jewel!". I guess that's to be expected though. We do this because jewel list members provided us with free tapes at one time, and we'd like you to have that same feeling and enjoyment. They aren't absolutely free, since you have to mail off blank tapes and return postage, but you'll never have to send any money. Everything's explained on the site and in an email after you sign up. Your email address will not be used for any evil purposes- only communication concerning your tapes. There is no obligation to do anything once you get your tapes but enjoy them. I know, it's rare to find an exception to the saying "If it's too good to be true, it probably is" but this is one exception. It's possible due to the volunteers who will be making your tapes on the "Credits" page on the site: http://www.angelfoodbank.org Tapes are available anywhere in the world. Just pick the region listed closest to you on the site signup. We've done our best to make it easy to get your tapes. It is common knowledge that the Woodstock organizers are trying to get as many of todays' & the weekends' performers to take part in it, so it is certainly feasable that Jewel MIGHT partake in that. (again, no guarantees, it's just a possibility). The Red Hot Chili Peppers are scheduled from 8:40 to 10:10 pm ET, with the Hendrix tibute TBA (To Be Announced), but I would imagine it would start within 30 minutes after the end of the RHCP set, as most acts followed previous acts within 30 minutes. While some list members have in fact found the new Jewel promo CD (Bits & Baubles) at their local Target store, many have not. The reason is that it appears the original shipment was sent back due to "offensive artwork", and that they do not expect the NEW shipments to arrive at ALL of the stores until mid next week. Some stores have them now, some will get them tomorrow or Friday, some next week. The main point is that ALL 800+ Target stores *are* scheduled to get them, according to Sarah, the girl who has written me that works in Targets' promotional department. So, if you live near a Target store please sit tight and wait it out before going nutso on us and posting to the list asking for others to get one for you. You should most certainly be able to get one by this time next week. I don't expect the stores to sell out quickly, if at all, as it hasn't been a widely announced release, and my local store had at least 20 of them last night. (NOTE - please don't write me asking me to get you one, I have a new situation here to deal with the next few days and will not have the time) Of course, those that do not live near a Target and want one will have to either post to the list asking for one, or perhaps email a friend or two who may have a store near them. (Which would be preferrred right now.....ask some friends first, then if you strike out, feel free to post to the list) Mike - Jewel list owner - * If you are new to the Jewel list and need a helping hand, * or have a burning question about Jewel and/or the list, * The Jewel/EveryDay Angels List Homepage & Guide is at: * http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup * Many basic/common Jewel and list questions can be answered there :-) * * Need some Angelfood? Tickets for the Tampa show will go on sale August 2nd, but you can go for free! Alloy Online is sponsoring a poetry writing contest -- to be judged by Jewel herself -- and the winner and a lucky friend will get see the August 27th show and meet Jewel in person! It's also available online at http://www.usatoday.com/life/enter/music/lemindex.htm with a picture. If that link does not work as the weekend wears on, the full article (with a different picture) is at http://www.usatoday.com/life/music/lmds639.htm For those without web access, I'll post the text later tonight. Mike :-) Jewel arrives on stage without armor By Elysa Gardner, Special for USA TODAY HARTFORD, Conn. - Not long after taking the stage Wednesday at the Meadows Music Theatre, midway through her national tour, Jewel introduced a tune, still untitled, in which she makes a telling confession: "I'm part woman, but still half child." The lyric sums up the persona Jewel projected throughout her two-hour set (2.5 stars out of four). Clad in a sleeveless black top and sequined miniskirt, she was alternately, at times simultaneously, coy ingenue and sultry vamp. One moment she would strut across the stage like some latter-day Mae West, thanking "the boys" in her band. Then, without missing a beat, she would launch into a giggly monologue about how she met ex-boyfriend Steve Poltz - who opened for Jewel and played guitar in her band - and a plaintive version of her hit You Were Meant for Me, which Poltz co-wrote. Clearly, 25-year-old Jewel is an expert at making such seeming contradictions work. In her delicate folk-pop songs, she professes vulnerability and stresses the need for empathy and compassion. Yet she delivered them with the flamboyant, almost swaggering self-assurance of a born diva. Rubbing her hands together, swiveling her hips and flashing her eyes, Jewel demanded and ate up the rapt attention of her fans. Her singing, though technically strong, was often mannered. Veering from throaty low notes to a resonant soprano, she emphasized her slow, deliberate vibrato and waxed melodramatic with her phrasing on ballads such as Foolish Games and Kiss the Flame. But Jewel also proved an appealing and resourceful musician, whether performing alone with her guitar or aided by the crisp precision of her backing group. Though her lyrical, contemplative songs tend to meander a bit - a series of spare acoustic ballads delivered halfway through the set seemed like a long musical recitative - she made up for the lack of structure with nuance. Hands built from a glowing reverie to a buoyant affirmation of faith. Do You was rendered with a winning mix of playfulness and urgency. Though the concert's overall vibe was predictably mellow, Jewel and her cohorts demonstrated that they could rock forcefully, especially toward the end. The set concluded with an overextended version of Who Will Save Your Soul, in which Jewel scatted and emoted relentlessly. She rewarded the fans who stayed for an encore by yodeling and reading a poem from her book, A Night Without Armor, a copy of which was passed to her by an admirer. Jewel aches just like a woman, but she mugs like a little girl. He contacted me since Jewel performed there and that he figured it was likely that some members of this list were there. They have put up a special website with photos of criminal acts in process at Woodstock 99, and are requesting help. Criminal acts they are interested in are larceny, criminal mischief, arson and sexual assault. They are not concerned about drug usuage. They want folks to look at the website to see if they can identify people committing these acts, and are ALSO requesting that if you HAVE photos of people commiting these acts at Woodstock 99, that you provide them with a copy of the photo. Please consider doing this if you were there. It is NOT tattletelling, it is making folks PAY for crimes that in some cases endangered thousands of fellow concert goers. In fact, dozens of people were injured, two in particular with serious back injuries. Just remember this, if incidents like what happened at the end of Woodstock 99 are condoned and/or committed in the future at similar events, the days of such events will be numbered, as insurance will be nearly impossible to obtain. (not to mention such acts are just plain wrong). If you have web access, and either went to Woodstock 99 or know people that did go that are capable of committing these crimes, please visit http://www.troopers.state.ny.us/ to peruse the photos they have there. I'll admit in some of the photos it's nearly impossible to ID anyone. Mike - Jewel list owner : \ / Be an angel.
