The date is June 26th The location is Newbreak on the Beach 1959 Abbott Street Ocean Beach San Diego California 92107 As most of you know the event was originally scheduled for Java Joe's but we just couldn't get together on terms or dates. Newbreak is about 3 blocks from Java Joe's and it is right on the beach with big windows that open out so it's almost like an outdoor event. There is also a huge street fair the same day in Ocean Beach so the roads in town will be closed. I would suggest arriving early if you want to park anywhere near the venue There will be a number of performers including myself ( Rizioule )http://www.homestead.com/rizioule/ and a handful of EDA musicians. We are also working on a performance by a very special guest. I wont say who it is yet until it is final but I will say that you all know who she is . With that I will just leave you guessing . I will post again as soon as I have more info ! To secure your reservations e-mail your intention to attend to rizioule@hotmail.com I hope to see all of you there !!! Talk to you soon Rizioule The Music , Writings and Art Rizioule http://www.hometead.com/rizioule/ If you would like to hear a sample of some of my music go here. It's time to start working on getting people there. For those new to this here's how it works. If you want to come to Bearsville, but you need a ride or if your are coming and have room for people to ride along, you fill out the questionnaire below. Then once or twice a week I post a list of everyone giving/needing rides. If you see someone who can give you a ride you contact him or her and work out the details. Ok here are the questions, I'll give an explanation of why I need some of this info below: Name: Age: Phone #: (optional, but important, see below, I WON'T be posting the #s) Where do you live: State, City Do you need a ride or will you be giving a ride: If your giving a ride how many people can you take (remember camping equipment can take up a lot of space): Please send your answers to: Shallowend@asan.com With ANR in the subject, I'm filtering my mail so that it all will go into one mail box. If you dont have the right subject I may miss it, I get 100's of e-mails a day. Ok that's it, some of you may be wondering why I asked for your phone #. I know people get protective of info they give out over the net. Last year, we had some people run into last minute problems, phone calls had to be made and plans were being juggled around, this was all happening about 2 hours before we were supposed to get picked up. Phone #'s were a big problem no one had all the phone #'s so this year, I thought that it would be a good idea if I had all the #'s. Please read this part it's important. I'm not a matchmaker, I'm simply relaying information and trying to make things easier for people. It's your job to contact the people you decide to travel with. I can not vouch for anyone. Be safe and use common sense. If you feel funny about something follow your instinct. We do our best to make sure this will be a pleasant and safe trip for everyone. If you trade phone numbers, call the person you'll be travelling with get to know them. Ok, one last thing please only write to me if your serious, sending me jokes just wastes my time and takes me away from doing what's important helping people get to Bearsville. If you have questions about what Bearsville is all about visit mike's web sight at http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup/bv/bv99.htm I'm taking time out of my life to help people on the list, please follow my instructions and it will be easier for us all :) Ok everyone have fun, I hope to see a lot of you at Tammy's this weekend and at VH1 next week. There will also be other European dates scheduled in addition to some replacement dates in Zurich, Spain & Italy. It's far too soon to give you any specifics at this point, but I thought you'd appreciate knowing she will be back this year. Check the website calendar for updates as more information becomes confirmed. Also, Congratulations to all the EDAs who have been contacted by VH1! If you submitted an entry, check your email carefully. Most contact is being done via email & the subject line simply says "Jewel" or something to that effect. The contact is coming from a temporary MTV address, so don't be confused by that. They share offices. Get those replies in asap as per the instructions they send you. Everyone who has been invited has been contacted via email or phone already. Two different mailings went out yesterday from MTV/VH1 headquarters. Each contained a partial list of invitees. Thanks to the watchful eye of your moderator Mike, he noticed several email addresses that were incorrectly transcribed. I've crossreferenced the two invitation lists with the original list & personally emailed those people with the needed info. So everyone who made the invitation list has been officially contacted via phone call or correct email address. Also, they have not cancelled the "chat sequence with Jewel" as some have speculated to me privately. This should be another fun experience for The EDAs & I look forward to meeting many more of you! READ CAREFULLY Date: Thu, 3 Jun 1999 20:52:33 -0500 Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hey Everyone, Well as I have said before I have really enjoyed the shirt project so far and I cant wait to start sending these things out to you guys who have waited so patiently for the project to get started. The reason I am emailing today is to make a few things clear and tell you all a little more about what I am doing to get this done. My first point should be about the web page and ordering. If you have not learned about the 1999 EDA T-shirt and would like to know more about it then go to the below web address: http://picket.cc.purdue.edu/~shortdog/Jewel/EDA.html Everything you need to know about the shirts is at this address. Now on to the real reason for my message. Most of you know that the LAST day for me to except orders for the T-shirt is June 15th. If I wake up on the morning of the 16th and have not received your order you will not get one. The reason I have done this is because I want to get shirts out to everyone as soon as possible and the time it take to print up the shirts and then for me to send them out can be up to 4 weeks though I am pushing really hard to get a few shirts out by the beginning of July do to special requests. Next, here is what happens when you order. I get your mail and my computer responds to your mail with and "order received" message. Your order goes to a special folder in my inbox. Now if your order sits in that folder for 2 weeks and I have not received your payment in the mail then your order gets taken out. Then I email you telling you that the order has been cancelled. I do this because I assume that you have decided you do not want a shirt after all. I have no problems with that but I dont want to be emailing everyone telling them their order has been cancelled. I opened up the ordering on May 24th and come Monday evening I will have to email some people telling them their order has been cancelled unless I get their money by then. Now...When I have stopped excepting orders on June 15th that doesn't mean I can except payments for obvious reasons. BUT HERE IS THE CATCH...after the 15th I will except payments until JUNE 20th. There are a few reasons for this, number one is I obviously want to get the shirts printed as soon as possible and the second reason is it can take about 3 days for an out of state check to clear. This brings me to my final point... Finally After I have received your check I will take it to the bank. I opened up a new account at my bank a few days ago so that I could deposit all the checks I have been getting. Now if you want a shirt and do not have the money to get one DO NOT send me a Non Sufficient Funds (NSF) check. It goes without saying that you should not write bad checks, but it does happen sometimes. First of all I GET CHARGED $25 DOLLARS if you write a NSF check. This will not only piss me off to no end it will make it so that you will not get a shirt unless you send me CASH ONLY for the shirt plus the $25 you will owe me. And lest we forget you will owe your bank for bouncing a check. Sounds BAD doesn't it? Of course I am not trying to scare anyone here, It just came as a surprise to me when the bank clerk told me that I would be charged $25 dollars for trying to deposit a bad check that someone wrote me. Apparently It is MY responsibility to call YOUR bank and check to make sure you have the money before I deposit the check..the problem with that is that I work 60 hours a week and I am taking summer college courses so I dont have time to call banks during their business hours. Ok well I am done spurting off now :-) I hope no one took it harshly. So now that all is said and done everyone go get your shirt and send me your money as soon as possible. The sooner you send me your money the sooner you will get your shirt. Subject: Jewel-News: NJC: Houston EDA Gathering Update! (6/4/99) To: Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk These updates will appear at most once a week until the week before the show, on July 10. Some EDA's are also planning to go to the Dallas show which is the day before, and the New Orleans show, which is the day after. These updates will only refer to the Houston show though...as far as whose going, the plans for earlier in the day, after the show, etc. As of right now, there aren't any *definite* plans, however some things have been tossed around, and we are speculating they will occur...once we figure out a time, place, etc. Plans call for an all-day gathering...before the show, and maybe after as well. Once a placed is established, we plan to have a BBQ/picnic/plywood roping contest/beer guzzling contest (j/k) whatever else you can think of that's FUN! Some EDA's will be arriving Friday night very late, coming back from the Dallas show. So no time or place has been established yet as for when this gathering will "start", and where it will be. More than likely, there will be some sort of BBQ either at someone's house, or wherever we can find a good place for that. This will occur around lunch time I'm guessing...but this isn't definite. We'll all hang out till it's time to make our way to the venue, allowing enough time to get there to see Steve take the stage at approx. 8:00pm. I'm predicting he'll play about 45 minutes, then there will be a 15 minute break for stage preparation for Jewel, then I think Jewel will play at least 1 1/2 hours...which I think is really cool since the longest I've ever seen her perform before was 1 hour. So it most likely won't be over till at least 10:30, maybe even closer to 11:00pm. After that some of us may get together and go to a club, or just hang out somewhere. But others maybe not be able to, and yet others may want to get an early start on their road trip to New Orleans the following day. So all this is still really up in there air. But we'll think of something soon enough. As Tessa said, let's play it by ear...us Texans are known for being laid back anyway...ha ha. Right now we're looking at about 15-20 EDA's...unless more get tickets soon. 99% of the covered reserved seating is sold out. Ok, ticketmaster.com is showing *1* seat left for the covered reserved section...so that's really more than 99% sold out. And the non-covered reserved seats are going quickly...they're about half gone already. So don't wait too much longer if you haven't already bought tickets. They are only $36.00, that includes all the taxes too, which to me is cheap based on the prices of other recent shows. Lawn seats are even less of course, if you prefer that. So that's about it for now...here's a list of all the people that have told me they're planning on coming to the show in Houston...if you have any questions, e-mail me, Dennis, Luna, or Tessa...I think we're the ones that are "sort of" getting this all together...or so it seems anyway...ha ha. All the e-mail address appear below. One of us should be able to give you somewhat of an answer...at least to the best of our knowledge at this time. The show is still over a month away, so once it's closer, (within a week or two) I'm sure we'll have more plans ironed out as far as the where's, when's, etc. Till then, I'll just be resubmiting this letter to the list once a week (with maybe a few minor changes), along with the most up-to-date list of EDA's going. If anyone sees any incorrect or missing info in the list, let me know so I can get it corrected ASAP. Thanks, Derrick One more thing...be sure to get your orders in for the new EDA t-shirt so we can all wear them to the show! :-) Did you all see Rich's latest post...if not, go read it! Big news (I think so). I was at my local Virgin Megastore and came across this CD called Modern Day Storytellers that said "Includes rare and never-before-released tracks from JEWEL, Paula Cole, Matthew Sweet, Aimee Mann" so I, of course flipped it over and saw YWMFM and thought "another version?" but decided to get it anyway. I listened to it and it is so cool!!! It starts out with this weird grunge/alternative sounding electric guitar all dark and stuff. Just electric guitar and bongos. Then after the first part, the acoustic guitar and drums kick in and there are some nifty-cool harmonies and strange but good backing vocals. But the chorus is just the "I know you that you love me" part - - no "Dreams last so long. . ." It's really wonderful. The tracks are as follows: *1 Matthew Sweet "Ultrasuede" (Studio Outtake) 2 Chris Mars "Popular Creeps" 3 Marshall Crenshaw "What Do You Dream Of?" 4 Liz Phair "X-Ray Man" 5 Fiona Apple "Shadowboxer" 6 Jeff Buckley (AMAZING singer) "Last Goodbye" 7 Graham Parker "Soul Corruption" *8 JEWEL "YWMFM" (Live) 9 Mary Lou Lord "I'm Talking to You" 10 Ani DiFranco "Buildings and Bridges" *11 Aimee Mann "Jimmy Hoffa Jokes" (Promo Release Only) *12 Paula Cole "Bethlehem" (Original Demo Version) 13 Victoria Williams "Shoes" 14 Lenny Kravitz "I BUild This Garden For Us" Unfortunately, only the songs with asterisks are rare. The rest are just album versions. The CD is by Beloved Recordings and the # on the back is 6 1762-1013-2 6. Also, I was looking on the computer search thingie and it says Jewel is on a CD called Live From the World Cafe with WWSYS. Does anyone know about this? Date: Fri, 11 Jun 1999 00:42:52 -0500 Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hey EDAs This is message is to all the EDAs that have ordered a shirt from me or is planning to do so, this message is very imporant so read it carefully. First, I recieved the sample shirt a few weeks ago and it was less than perfect if I do say so myself. This is not to say that the design was bad by any means. The design has been through a few revisions and I have been fighting with the company that will be printing the shirts to make that design look EXACTLY the way it appeared on my web page. This has not yet happened but, the latest revision does look very good. I have updated my webpage with the new design. go here to see it http://picket.cc.purdue.edu/~shortdog/Jewel/t-shirt.html the first thing you will notice is the lettering font is different. I don't think this is much of a big deal but I can not speak for everyone. Everyone please go to the above site and look for the differences....This is the FINAL design. It is getting too close to ordering time for me to "fight" with the printing company any longer. In light of this unexpected dilemma I have decided to give EVERYONE the opportunity for a total refund for the amount they sent me. If you do not like the final design then tell me as soon as possible so that i can get money back out to you right away. Returned money will be in the form of a check from me or your own check if i have not desposited it yet. I believe the FINAL design is very good and I have the shirt right in front of me and it looks good. I had this actual shirt scanned and put the image on my web page. If you have ANY questions what so ever then email me right away at jewels@purdue.edu and I will do my best to respond quickly. I am sure I will get overwhelmed with email do to this but that is my own fault i guess. Anyway keep smiling everyone and I hope all are happy with the decisions i have made. Subject: Jewel-News: Houston EDA Gathering Update! (6/10/99) To: "'Jewel list'" Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk These updates will appear at most once a week until the week before the show, on July 10. Right now we're looking at about 15-20 EDA's...unless more get tickets soon. 99% of the covered reserved seating is sold out. Ok, ticketmaster.com is showing *1* seat left for the covered reserved section...so that's really more than 99% sold out. And the non-covered reserved seats are going quickly...they're about 70% gone already. The show is still a month away, so once it's closer, (within a week or two) I'm sure we'll have more plans ironed out as far as the where's, when's, etc. Till then, I'll just be resubmiting this letter to the list once a week (with maybe a few minor changes), along with the most up-to-date list of EDA's going. If anyone sees any incorrect or missing info in the list, let me know so I can get it corrected ASAP. How this works simple, if you see someone that's near you or that might be driving past you getting to Bearsville, or if you see someone you can give a ride to just write to them. It's up to you to work out all the details. Don't write to me asking questions, I don't have the answers. If you're scratching your head wondering what this is or how to get on the list read the post that follows this one. People able to give rides: Rebecca Smith missw9@hotmail.com Jacksonville, NC Can take 2 or 3 people. Jay C. It's time to star working on getting people there. Ok here are the questions, I'll give an explanation of why I need some of this info below: Name: Age: Phone #: (optional, but important, see below, I WON'T be posting the #s) Where do you live: State, City Do you need a ride or will you be giving a ride: If your giving a ride how many people can you take (remember camping equipment can take up a lot of space): Please send your answers to: rider24@worldnet.att.net With ANR in the subject, I'm filtering my mail so that it all will go into one mail box. We do our best to make sure this will be a pleasant and safe trip for everyone, but things do happen. Call the person you'll be travelling with get to know them. Ok one last thing please only write to me if your serious, sending me jokes just wastes my time and takes me away from doing what's important helping people get to Bearsville. If you have questions about what Bearsville is all about visit mikes web sight: http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup/bv/bv99.htm I'm taking time out of my life to help people on the list, please follow my instructions. If you upset the people who take the time out to help people on the list, people will be less likely to help you in the future. I'll enjoy the 1st hand accounts that get posted with the rest of you, and just tell you a few related things of interest. Also some news I waited on so Jewel could tell it on the show first. As she revealed last night, a new quite different version of "Jupiter" will be her 3rd single from Spirit. It's got a more hip-hop type rhythm than the album version & a very agressive guitar sound in parts. There will be several international singles forthcoming. Will keep you informed. The soundtrack for "Ride With The Devil" will contain "What's Simple Is True". Looks like "The Sue Lee Song" has been relegated to obscurity for now. Someone asked her to play it last night, but she doesn't remember it any more. (I'll see what I can do about that ;-) Although I forget where (Australia seems right...but I'll confirm that & post later), an enhanced CD version of "Spirit" is being readied for release. This will contain multi-media content like the videos bio, & some other cool stuff you can play on your computer. We also have exciting plans for EDAs looking to get involved with HGH goals and making a positive difference in your own lives. More info on that soon, as well. Also, on the 1st leg of the US dates, prior to Rusted Root AND Steve Poltz supporting, ONLY Steve will be warming up. These rumours about The Coors warming up in CA are wrong. There will also be several webcasts of American tour shows. No details yet, but I'll definitely keep you posted. Lastly, I wanted to let you know that the producer told me The EDAs were the easiest fanbase they'd ever worked with on "VH1 Storytellers". They also said that the questions you guys came up with were far more intelligent than they usually deal with & would have foregone the rehearsal the night before had they known just how intelligent & funny you'd be. (Personally, I thought the Q & A part was particularly good & often hilarious. Especially that last question!!!! THAT was hysterical whoever you were! I bow to you! :-) Thats about it from me today. I already updated the www.jeweljk.com calendar with more accurate info & I'm going to put up EVERY 1999 SETLIST tommorrow. It'll be 100% accurate & complete through last night! I'll also include every Steve Poltz setlist from the tour. Have a look tommorrow if you're into these things. Cheers! Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Just got back from what, by any accounts, was a damn fine show!!! I wanted to post everything while it is still fresh in my mind. Here is quick run down of the night: Storytellers Taping for VH-1, expected air date 08/01/99 Attendance: 150 exactly as VH-1 said Fashion report: Jewel in black pants, black leather sleeveless top and black wrist bands She started accoustic/solo with Cowboy dedicated to her father and saying how much she has enjoyed country lately. She then did a VERY extended Mexico/drug bust/YWMFM story, but because this is national TV, Steve is now a Catholic Choirboy who would never even dream of touching pot (wink, wink). Then she sang YWMFM She then talked about the Europe tour, including how all the announcers and radio interviews basically said, "how's it feel to be popular in the states, but nothing in Europe?" She then discussed being famous and how embarrassing it is to shop for things like toilet paper and being recognized. Then she kicked into Sometimes It Be That Way. VERY COOL!!! She then told a story about having to pee in the San Diego airport and someone recognizing her and wanting an autograph and waiting outside the stall while she went to get it ... HOW RUDE! She then played along with an EDA who asked her to sing Cole Porters "Anything Goes" She then said music could be for good or evil and this song was for evil and revenge and she lit into Grey Matter. Then she moved to a center stage bench to field questions from the audience. Since this is a sore spot with me I'll let those who asked questions tell you all about it. She read one poem from ANWA -- The Strip #1. Quick break backstage while the band came out. She opened with Hands dedicated to her recently deceased grandfather Yule. Steve thanked Jewel because when he's around her the band gets free haircuts. Jewel then said how nice it was to be from Alaska where everything is pure and simple, leading into What's Simple Is True. Jewel then told story about the Rolling Stone cover shoot #1, about feeling inferior to some super model, all the while making fun of her as only Jewel can. She then said the next song is her next single and that it has been recorded from the album and changed from a 3/4 tempo to a 4/4 -- at which she played a slightly faster version of Jupiter (which got mixed reviews from fellow EDAs but I loved it.) She then told the story about her friend and second mom (we know who she's referring to) and said that before she died of cancer she asked Jewel to record her own anthem about what she stands for ... so this was it and Jewel dedicated Life Uncommon to her. And it was Uncommon ... Jewel simply kicked in this song and was simply moving. As we waited for tape to be loaded Jewel jammed around a little bit with the band, and then stopped. And she said something to the effect that she got into this (music) to help people and live a dream and too often when you get famous it becomes about other things (money, hits, pleasing people) and there have been times were she wanted to quit. But then she'd get ENCOURAGEMENT FROM EDAs and her spirits would be lifted. I know this reads really corny and it sounds patronizing, but I don't think we'll ever realize how much we've helped. So take some heart that Jewel in a moment of honesty and gratitude thanked us (I say this because I know it will never make the televised show and it sounds so insincere in a post, but it was very touching.) Then she began to jam solo on an electric guitar and then absolutely just rocked the house with quite simply the best version of Love Me Just Leave Me Alone I personally have ever heard (and yes I was at JewelStock and other shows when this was typically in her set list) It was just awesome, which again, means that it will never make the airing :-) Then thankfully she played Do You Want To Play ... my current fav .. except she just called it Oh EI Oh Ei OH song. She said she wrote it in Toyoko and that she wasn't supposed to do it (meaning again, it won't make the airing) She then did a Bob Dylan story about him sending her CDs of the Blue Yodeler, and asking Mr. BB when it was that she first played with Bob (of course he knew off the top of his head) She dedicated the last song to Dylan -- a very long, very scat version of WWSYS ... it was cool but it will be edited for TV cause it was long .... Anyway that's about it from me ... now some else can fill in the blanks I left! -- Rob From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Sun Jun 13 11:12:45 1999 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id LAA23900 for jewel-news-outgoing; Sun, 13 Jun 1999 11:12:38 -0400 (EDT) Received: from relay03.indigo.ie (relay03.indigo.ie [194.125.133.227]) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/daemon-mode-relay2) with SMTP id HAA20993 for ; Sun, 13 Jun 1999 07:02:55 -0400 (EDT) Received: (qmail 721 messnum 46193 invoked from network[194.125.134.197/ts02-070.dublin.indigo.ie]); 13 Jun 1999 11:02:53 -0000 Received: from ts02-070.dublin.indigo.ie (HELO oemcomputer) (194.125.134.197) by relay03.indigo.ie (qp 721) with SMTP; 13 Jun 1999 11:02:53 -0000 Message-Id: <3.0.6.32.19990613120210.008fcba0@indigo.ie> X-Sender: monster2@indigo.ie X-Mailer: QUALCOMM Windows Eudora Light Version 3.0.6 (32) Date: Sun, 13 Jun 1999 12:02:10 +0100 To: jewel-news@smoe.org From: Andrew Fitzpatrick Subject: Jewel-News: PLANET ROCK PROFILES Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hello everyone, This is just to let you know that we had the pleasure of interviewing Jewel for the new series of PLANET ROCK PROFILES while she was in Dublin recently. It airs at 6:00pm eastern time, please check your listings for other timezones. (please note that during the whole day, Comedy Central shows OTHER episodes of Ssaturday Night Live, and this is the only *scheduled* airing of this particular episode this Friday.....it's episode # 991). For those that may not know, Comedy Central is a cable network in the USA. It was an episode hosted by John Goodman in early May 1997, and she sang Who Will Save Your Soul which featured a sax solo by Joshua Redman (which was very "list controversial....what a surprise) and You Were Meant For Me. I am not sure if the repeat this Friday will have both musical numbers (I doubt it very much), as the airing is only an hour and the original episode was 90 minutes long (as are all Saturday Night Live shows). I will be calling the printing company tomorrow morning and ordering the first batch. So everyone make sure you get your order in tonight or tomorrow morning if you want it accounted for. The first batch order will be made for all the checks I have recieved by tomorrow, otherwise I will be doing a second batch order in about a week. The second batch order will be made for all the checks that I will receive by the 20th of this month. You all should know that the last day I am excepting payments is the 20th of this month. Now onto another related topic... My mailbox has been swamped as you can imagine with emails asking if I can postpone the last day to order...The answer to that is No. BUT there is a possible way around this. Lots of people have been asking for extensions so here is what I MIGHT do. Depending on how high the demand is for the shirt after I close the ordering will depend upon weather I open ordering up again at a later date. the key words here being LATER DATE. I will have no problems with people sending me requests to make more shirts or except more orders...BUT I will not except anymore orders at that time. If I do decide to make more shirts and except more orders you will know because I will do another post like this one. On a final note... I want to thank everyone that helped in this project..even though the list is small I thank you for your "virtual" support. I have certainly enjoyed doing this project and spent the majority of my time organizing it and making the best of everything that came my way over the last few months. I hope everyone has appreciated the work I have done and maybe... just maybe Jewel will hear of my devotion to our friendly little organization called the EveryDay Angels. I would be happy to lead any other projects that the EDAs would like to get going....just no tape trees :-) Thanks Everyone, Rich "The angel, that after 3 years on the list, still can't come up with a good name, guy" Long Project Leader P.S. So please be patient if your region is not represented below. I have one request though, as list jewel@smoe manager. PRETTY PLEASE (yeah, yeah...OK....with a cherry on top) .....please do not post to that list asking when tickets go on sale etc. I know some of you may wonder why, but we have 3,100 subscribers here and I am easily getting nearly a dozen posts some days solely asking about ticket sales. There ARE easy ways of finding this information on your own. Please call the venues, check TicketMaster at http://www.ticketmaster.com, and/or even look for a web site for the venue, or call a local TicketMaster outlet. To aid in finding a web site for a venue, online search engines are very easy to use and can help immensely to find such information....I know (from experience) that more than a few of you have yet to use one, but they can be your best online friend at times :-) My two personal favorites at http://www.hotbot.com and http://www.lycos.com There are many others of course. I'll pop in when I can. Otherwise just check www.jeweljk.com for all currently available accurate information (& enter the FREE TICKETS contest while you're there!) I look forward to seeing many of you in San Diego & Irvine. Should be good shows. Bibi & video crew will be filming & I'll be recording these for more footage for the home video project, which has come a long way & is closing in on completion. The San Diego show will be Jewel's first home town gig since September of 97 & should be a special one! I look forward to seeing many of you that day at the Ocean Beach EDA gathering/concert at Newbreak on the Beach.) First of all--WELCOME! Since the list FAQ is almost 4 years old & extremely out of date, it's understandibly difficult for new subscribers to get a grip on all that goes on in this large community. These lists, as you can probably sense, have facilitated the developement of many personal relationships among listmembers. The EDAs have also gone beyond the boundaries of the NET & have participated in quite a few great outside projects geared toward helping others as well as meeting in larger groups at music & non-music related events around the world. The purpose of this email is to give new folks a hand at finding the best resources to help with understanding this group called The EDAs. I promise any new person who takes the time to visit these sites, that you will enjoy the lists much more, feel right at home & be as knowledgable as most seasoned vets. (And those grumpy old vets will appreciate your effort.) I'm sure many of you new folks want to know more, but may not know how to educate yourself about the goings-on here. So here's helpful suggestions for you. Please take the time to check these out. It's painless, I promise, & actually fun. The EDA List Guide: http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup/ This website is THE BEST resource to learn about these mailing lists, basic Jewel knowledge (so you don't have to wonder about simple things or ask questions that have been answered a thousand times.) Just by knowing the content on this site, you will immediately fit in, feel much more comfortable & enjoy yourself here. REALLY! The Official Jewel Site: http://www.jeweljk.com This is Jewel's official website featuring the latest accurate news, tourdates (& calendar which is updated EVERY DAY), TV appearance info, Jewel Merchandise, Higher Ground For Humanity, Multimedia, photos & more. The best site for current accurate information! Pieces Of Jewel: http://jewel.zoonation.com/ Adam Longfellow's incredible site is the longest running fan site & has the best & most extensive historical content of any Jewel site. (Also, for a list of over 1000 older Jewel Performances check http://jewel.zoonation.com/jchrono.htm. I still keep Jewel's older performance chronology from 1994-1997 here on Adam's site. A very helpful resource for tape collectors needing accurate dates & venues on older performances.) Crashboy's EDA Page: http://thespis.com/crashboy/ This site has photos galore of various EDA gatherings all over North America. See for yourself many of the people responsible for the folklore of this list & get inspired to join in! The EDAFoundation: http://www.EveryDayAngels.org The EveryDay Angels Foundation is a non-profit public benefit corporation whose mission is to promote grassroots volunteerism and community involvement. Inspired, created & managed by fellow listmembers who are devoting time & effort to promote activities that directly effect positive change in the world & to help focus the energy of the EDAs as a force to effect positive change. Watch for their posts, visit their site & find out how you can get involved while having a lot of fun in the process! Gerritt's Jewel Page: http://www.endor.org/jewel/ Another long time fan site with a lot of great content as well as the best source BY FAR for finding links to all the other Jewel sites. Atlantic Records: http://www.atlantic-records.com Jewel's record company's site featuring current industry news, contests & a few complete webcasts of Jewel are also available here. And finally, almost the entire history of this list is archived online at: http://www.smoe.org/lists/jewel/archives/ Here is the day to day history of this list referenced chronilogically in digest form. Not only is this a great resource for historical info, but if you are new or gone for a while, you can go here to read the past few days at any time. There's plenty more of course, but these sites in particular will definitely eleviate most of your confusion & will allow you to have a lot more fun way faster! Help everyone here by helping yourself to these resources. Welcome & enjoy! It airs at 6:00pm eastern time, please check your listings for other timezones. (please note that during the whole day, Comedy Central shows OTHER episodes of Saturday Night Live, and this is the only *scheduled* airing of this particular episode Friday.....it's episode # 991). REwrite Jewel's LAST Hit! To: jewel@smoe.org, Tlcathome@aol.com Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk The Harris Clan (tm) is sponsoring a simple, sweet and to the point activity for this year's July 16-18th annual Bearsville campout in Woodstock, NY. Knowing how hot a topic "JEWEL CHANGING" is nowadays, we want to have you EDAs change Jewel! (Well, her lyrics anyway!) That's right, the First EDA "Jewel Forgot the Lyrics, So We're Gonna Make 'em Up for Her" contest is on! YEP, WE'RE GONNA CHANGE JEWEL'S MUSIC OURSELVES! (I can hear the purists on the list howling in terror already! ;-) Here's how it works: 1) Take your favorite Jewel song (or your LEAST favorite) and rewrite the words, preferrably in a satirical manner. In fact, only funny entries will even be considered! Try to use a song that isn't tough to play (or fake) on the guitar, as your backup band will be the EDAs who think to bring their guitars to the campout! 2) Send your entries to HarrisBros@aol.com. Deadline for entries will be July 12th... (please don't send your original emails as they cannot be returned ;-). 3) Our distinguished panel of judges will read the entries and select a half dozen or so to be performed at the traditional Saturday night bonfire at Bearsville. We'll record the live event and if the resulting tape is worth listening to again, we'll share it amongst the EDAs! 4) A prize will be given to the absolute crowd favorite. All other entries played that night will be immortalized on the tape! 5) If you attend Bearsville and submit an entry, you get first dibs at singing it. Otherwise, you are at the mercy of whoever is capable of still reading lyrics that late at night. I know that Amy already has four versions of "FatBoy" written, so I'd avoid that particular song. Anything else is fair game, I suppose... Dennis (Don't like it? Change it!) Here's other miscellaneous details about the recording: "Jupiter" was re-recorded in London on May 20th & 21st with Jewel's touring band. They mixed it on the 22nd. The recording took place at Olympic Studios in London. (Trivia...Among other classic albums, The Rolling Stones recorded Beggars Banquet at Olympia...& Jewel has been groovin to their "Sticky Fingers" album lately....) The string section on the re-recorded "Jupiter" has the same arranger and string section as on The Verve's "Bittersweet Symphony". It's in 4/4 time as apposed to 3/4 on the album version. A new VH1/MTV video will likely happen too. While I'm traveling, various news is bound to pop up. Just keep each other informed & check the website. I will only have sporadic access to email & will not be answering much, but everything I'm currently aware of is already on the www.jeweljk.com calendar. The following comment is from the official UK chart site at www.dotmusic.com ------------------------------------------------ UK Singles Chart Commentary from James Masterton 38 DOWN SO LONG (Jewel) Despite her superstar status in other territories and her obvious appeal for her blonde bombshell looks, songwriter and poet Jewel hasn't quite made the commercial breakthough that has been predicted for her for the past few years. Down So Long is only her second Top 40 hit and it fares little better than her first - You Were Meant For Me which scraped to Number 32 on its second release in November 1997. Down So Long hasn't done too badly in terms of airplay but she clearly has some way to go before her star shines in this country. ------------------------------------------------- Chris. Thank you channel 1. They understand what we love to see as fans of Jewel. On dutch TV i have been watching just 12 hours ago a lovely taped concert of Jewel in Spain. I guess Spain because she said gracias after the first song :-) Jewel was looking lovely, and the whole new band was also part of this concert on tv. They played 11 songs of the concert. The show was a mixture of bandsongs and one accoustic song by Jewel. This are the songs on tv :-) * Deep water * What simple is true * Hands * Jupiter * Stranger enter from the east (sung by Jewel) * Foolish games * You were meant for me * Do you * Down so long * Who will save your soul I really enjoyed the concert, and it was really cool to see a whole concert on dutch tv . Why didn't Alan tell us this already in advance . I was suprised when i read the tv/radiopaper on wednesday that Jewel was going to be on dutch channel 1 . No complaints of course, it was just terrific. So the concert was cool, the song Do you hasn't Jewel done at any of her European Spirit concerts in may . That was strange, but this version on tv was nice. Jewel started to laugh, and continued singing this song. It was nice to see some old tunes again like Foolish games, You were meant for me and Who will save your soul. Deep water, is still one of my favourite songs. Hands was pretty well also. Have a nice day, in holland we are happy because Jewel gets more attention i start to believe on dutch media. Michiel The dutch fan that saw Jewel 12 hours ago on TV. I did get a call today of interest to all you SoCal EDAs. As you already know, a special EDA gathering is scheduled for next Saturday at noon at a place called Newbreak On The Beach in Ocean Beach, prior to Jewel's hometown gig at the Coors Amphitheater that evening. As I previously mentioned, during the first hour of this gathering, staff from Higher Ground For Humanity & The EDAFoundation will be joining me, so we can chat with EDAs for about an hour, prior to the live musical performances scheduled. I know many of you want to learn more about HGH & The EDAF. This is your opportunity to learn more directly from the people involved. Since I wrote you last time, Lenedra, otherwise known as Jewel's mom, manager & co-founder of HGH, has confirmed that she will be joining us there during that first hour, noon to 1pm. I highly suggest you get there early as space is limited & the OB Street Fair will be going on that day. We look forward to meeting many of you there & seeing many familiar faces. Here's the info below for those who still need it. Seeya there! Back to the beach..... :-) MrBB San Diego "Gathering Of Angels" June 26th at noon Newbreak On The Beach 1959 Abbott Street Ocean Beach, San Diego, CA Noon to one: EDA Chat with HGH & EDAF 1PM: Live music with: Elizabeth Hummel Jason Mraz The Artist Rizioule plus a one hour EDA Spotlight Performance with local EDA musicians. To: jewel-news@smoe.org Subject: Jewel-News: * Houston EDA Gathering Update! (6/21/99) Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk These updates will appear at most once a week until the week before the show, on July 10. The show is still about 3 weeks away, so once it's closer, (within a week) I'm sure we'll have more plans ironed out as far as the where's, when's, etc. Till then, I'll just be resubmiting this letter to the list once a week (with maybe a few minor changes), along with the most up-to-date list of EDA's going. If anyone sees any incorrect or missing info in the list, let me know so I can get it corrected ASAP. Later that evening Jewel will be performing her hometown gig at the Coors Amphitheater. During the first hour of the EDA gathering, staff from Higher Ground For Humanity and The EveryDay Angels Foundation will be on hand to chat with EDAs. Alan suggested folks get there early as space is limited and the Ocean Beach Street Fair will be going on that day. The project was designed to honor acts of everyday kindness commited by EDAs across the world. In addition to being a vehicle to channel the desires of many inspired fans to give something back to their world in Jewel's honor, this project was also an excellent opportunity to see the differences people are currently making, and to help discern possible future project areas for the EDAF to focus on as a group. A digital version of the scrapbook will be made available soon. Thanks to everyone who participated in making it such a success! *** FALL CONCERT FOR ANTI-VIOLENCE *** The EDAF has plans underway to co-sponsor a fall concert in the Connecticut area. This concert would be held as an awareness-builder and fund raiser for both the EDAF and another non-profit whose mission is to promote anti-violence programs, most likely with a concentration on school-age kids. Several popular national acts are being considered, and the concert would also feature local independent musicians. We'll keep you posted as details are worked out! *** EDAF REPS TO BE AT JEWEL SHOWS, BEARSVILLE AND WOODSTOCK *** Amy and Dennis will be traveling down to the Dallas, Houston and New Orleans Jewel shows, so anyone in those areas please make an effort to meet us and say hello. Many EDAF'ers on this list will also be at the Bearsville campout on July 16th. The following week, EDAF'ers Dennis and Albert (our group webmaster), Chris and Eric will be attending the New York MacExpo show, so any Mac tech geeks should join us... That next weekend, many of us are going to Woodstock and staying in EDA Tent City! ;-) All in all, the next month is a whirlwind of activity, from San Diego, to Texas, to the Catskills, to New York City and then on to upstate New York for Woodstock! *** WELCOME TO THE NEWEST EDAF MEMBERS *** The EDAF would like to also welcome our newest supporting members: Chris Moynihan (Massachusetts), Elana Shugar (Canada) and David Trinh (Australia). Log on to AOL Keyword: LIVE at 8 p.m. (ET), and ask Jewel what it's like to be headlining one of the most eagerly anticipated tours in recent memory! Jewel has added a number of dates to the upcoming tour, which will hit major amphitheaters and arenas across the country (check out the Tour Database on the Atlantic site for a complete itinerary). The shows, highlighted by a July 25th performance at Woodstock '99, will mark Jewel's first domestic tour since the summer of 1997. In related news, VH1 has just announced that Jewel will be their Artist Of The Month for August -- a celebration which will kick off with the August 1st premier of Jewel's "Storytellers" performance! You can also count on seeing quite a bit of Jewel's upcoming new video for "Jupiter (Swallow The Moon)", the third single from her smash album "SPIRIT" (Go to the Atlantic site to check out a RealAudio Clip). Also, don't miss Jewel performing an outdoor concert for "The Today Show" on July 23rd. http://www.atlantic-records.com/jewel http://www.jewel-web.com *MB20'S ROB THOMAS AND CARLOS SANTANA ON LENO, TONIGHT, JUNE 24TH* Matchbox20 frontman Rob Thomas will join classic rock legend and bona-fide guitar god Carlos Santana on "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno," tonight, June 24th. They will be performing "Smooth," the Thomas-penned first single from Santana's upcoming album. Matchbox20 are getting set to enter the studio in July to begin recording the follow up to their eight-times-platinum smash debut "YOURSELF OR SOMEONE LIKE YOU." Meanwhile, last Tuesday, June 22nd saw the release of "MATCHBOX20 FROM AUSTRALIA," the Orlando, Florida-based band's first full-length video which follows the band through their sold-out 1998 tour of Oz, and features electrifying performances of their hit singles "Push," "3am," "Real World," and the current smash, "Back 2 Good." In addition to the never-before-seen backstage footage, other highlights include exclusive Matchbox20 renditions of Sinead O'Connor's "Nothing Compares 2 U," Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time," and the Beatles' "Don't Let Me Down," as well as! the band's new "u & i & i." http://www.atlantic-records.com/matchbox_20 *UBL "BAND OF THE WEEK" EDWIN MCCAIN HOSTS VH1'S "BACK2BACK VIDEOS" JUNE 28TH* Edwin McCain is The Ultimate Band List's "Band of the Week" -- log on at www.ubl.com and check it out! While you're there you can enter to win an Edwin McCain guitar or an autographed copy of his new album, "MESSENGER"! Don't miss Edwin hosting VH1's "Back 2 Back Videos" this Monday, June 28th. The hour-long program will air at 9 a.m. (ET), and again at 3 p.m. (ET). Meanwhile, you can see Edwin's new video for "I Could Not Ask For More" back to back as many times as you want (or at least until you develop some pointing-and-clicking-induced carpal tunnel syndrome), it's available in it's entirety on INSTAVID now! Penned by Diane Warren, "I Could Not Ask For More" was the #1 most added song at radio the week of its release -- Edwin couldn't ask for much more than that! Finally, tune into "Politically Incorrect With Bill Maher" on July 13th, and find out where Edwin stands on today's hottest issues. http://www.atlantic-records.com/edwin_mccain http://www.ubl.com *BUY THE NEW SOUTH PARK SOUNDTRACK AND GET A FREE POSTER* The most-eagerly anticipated film of the summer, paramount Pictures' full-length "South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut" is unquestionably the cinematic event of the year, if not the whole #$%@ing millennium. For this epic animated saga, series creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone have composed a batch of all-new tunes in the tradition of such previous classics as Chef's "Chocolate Salty Balls" (from last year's RIAA platinum-plus CHEF AID), which are certain to make the "MUSIC FROM AND INSPIRED BY: SOUTH PARK: BIGGER, LONGER AND UNCUT" the musical event of the epoch. Featuring Kid Rock and Joe C., Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson from Rush, Trick Daddy, and more, this hysterical new album includes the current single "What Would Brian Boitano Do." The companion video to this song is currently available in INSTAVID, check it out! "MUSIC FROM AND INSPIRED BY: SOUTH PARK: BIGGER, LONGER AND UNCUT" is the album to have this summer, and it's out now! If you order it from the Atlantic S! tore on the Atlantic site, we'll throw in a free "South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut" poster. Hurry, the offer is good only while supplies last! http://www.atlantic-records.com/south_park *KID ROCK GETS HOT WITDA DOGS AT KROQ'S "WEENIE ROAST"* Kid Rock has officially roasted weenies now on two coasts. The legendary rocker, rapper, and mis-behaver performed at KROQ's 7th Annual "Weenie Roast" in Irvine, California last Saturday, June 19th, along with Metallica, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Limp Bizkit, and more -- just a week and a day after causing a ruckus at the K-Rock "Dysfunctional Family Picnic" in New York. The self proclaimed "DEVIL WITHOUT A CAUSE" brought his Twisted Brown Trucker Band and half-pint-but-200-proof-sour-mash side-kick Joe C. for a rawkin' hellbilly hip-hop work-out which featured "Bawitdaba," his smash new single, as well as some classics and new sh*tz! The crowd was duly blown away, as was The Los Angeles Times, who proclaimed that Kid Rock's "solid, pounding and thoroughly integrated mix of styles was pretty much irresistible"! Kid Rock is set to kick out the jams all over again when his summer tour with Limp Bizkit kicks off tomorrow night, June 22nd, in Seattle. Check out the Tour Database! for a complete listing of dates, and get ready to have your weenie roasted! In other "Pimp of the Nation" news, Kid Rock was in Valencia, California last week shooting the new video for "Cowboy," the third single from the platinum "DEVIL WITHOUT A CAUSE." The video will find Kid Rock -- along with side-dick Joe C. and the Twisted Brown Trucker Band -- paying homage to Burt Reynolds with a sendoff of the 1977 burn-rubber classic, "Smokey and the Bandit." Unfortunately, the new clip will not feature Courtney Love, whom Kid Rock propositioned backstage at The MTV Movie Awards. Log on to the Atlantic site and enter the Kid Rock/Alternative Press sweepstakes! Answer a trivia question about The Kid (clue: the answer appears in the Kid Rock cover story in Alternative Press), and you could win a platinum plaque with your name on it, or an autographed guitar. http://www.atlantic-records.com/kid_rock *HEDWIG HITS 500 AS L.A. OPENING NEARS* The Off-Broadway show "Hedwig And The Angry Inch" -- which celebrates the musical travails of an East German "girly boy" who endures a botched sex-change operation, moves to a Kansas trailer park, and ultimately triumphs as an "internationally ignored song stylist" -- celebrated its 500th performance on June 4th! Sound like a lot of Hedwig? Well, hold on to your wigs, people, because there's a whole lot more Hedwig to come. A Los Angeles production of the show opens in the fall, to be followed by a national tour, and the film version will arrive at your local multi-plex sometime next year. For those of you who can't get enough of the show's songs -- which Time magazine called "the most exciting hard-rock score written for the theatre since, oh, maybe ever" -- the "HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH: ORIGINAL CAST RECORDING" is available at your local record store and at the Atlantic Store. http://www.atlantic-records.com/hedwig_and_the_angry_inch. *SUGAR RAY ON VH1'S "HARD ROCK LIVE," AUGUST 14TH* Sugar Ray wrapped up the latest leg of their on-going tour in support of "14:59" with a searing set at KROQ's "Weenie Roast" in Los Angeles. Mark, Murphy, Stan, Rodney, and DJ Homicide won't be off the road that long, however. Look for them to hit it again with The Goo Goo Dolls for a major tour starting July 16th in Phoenix. Check out the Tour Database on the Atlantic site for a complete listing. Sugar Ray will also be featured on VH1's "Hard Rock Live" on August 14th at midnight -- don't miss it! "Someday," the new single from Sugar Ray's smash album "14:59" is fast becoming the song of summer '99. If you haven't heard it yet, or just can't hear it enough, go to the Atlantic site to hear it in RealAudio, or better yet, check out the video in INSTAVID! http://www.atlantic-records.com/sugar_ray http://www.sugar-ray.com *P.O.D. SET TO UNLEASH THEIR HIGHLY ANTICIPATED DEBUT, "THE FUNDAMENTAL ELEMENTS OF SOUTHTOWN"* For Payable On Death, the four fundamental elements of an explosive and utterly turn-of-the-century rock groove are Sonny on mic, Wuv on drums, Traa on bass, and Marcos on guitar. Hailing from the palm-lined mean streets of San Diego's southern-most section, P.O.D. brings their heart, soul, and sense of truth to bear on their debut album, "THE FUNDAMENTAL ELEMENTS OF SOUTHTOWN," which hits the streets in August. Produced by Howard Benson (Less Than Jake, Sepultura, Motorhead, Body Count, TSOL) and mixed by Chris Lord-Alge (Hole, Green Day, Suicide Machines, Rob Zombie), the multi-faceted album reflects the culturally diverse backgrounds of its members and the rich musical soundtrack of their SoCal hometown. P.O.D. continue to increase their reputation as a ferocious live act -- check them out when they come to a town near you! http://www.atlantic-records.com/p.o.d *NEW AMERICAN SHAME PREPARE TO PUT SEATTLE BACK ON THE MAP WITH UPCOMING DEBUT* Straight from the Pacific Northwest comes the 100% pure hard rock of New American Shame. On their eponymous debut album, the Seattle quintet -- Johnny: vocals; Jimmy Paulson: lead guitars; Terry Bratsch: guitar; Kelly Wheeler: bass; Geoff Reading: drums -- take the metallic KO of such inspirations as AC/DC, classic killer Queen, and the first four Van Halen LPs and filter it through an extreme modern sensibility. The result? Some of the most full-on, in-yer-face power rock 'n' roll in eons. "NEW AMERICAN SHAME" compiles the band's acclaimed eight-song indie EP with four newly-cut tracks. With such ax-driven tunes as the sonic headbutt of the first single, "Under It All," the bloozy "What's It To You," or the ferocious "Broken Bones," "NEW AMERICAN SHAME" plainly packs more sharp-edged hooks than a Hellraiser flick. New American Shame have already shared the stage with such current hard rock luminaries as Kid Rock and Buckcherry, and are now getting set to take their raging riffs, butt-shakin' songs and boundless energy on the road with The Cult starting in July. Brace yourself. http://www.atlantic-records.com *KID LOCO RETURNS WITH "PRELUDE TO A GRAND LOVE STORY"* Born from the same Parisian underground as the very stylish Dimitri From Paris, Kid Loco pioneered the emergent leftfield hybrid of ambient, lounge, and hip-hop which continues to dominate turntables around the world. Now, Kid Loco -- aka Jean-Yves Prieuer -- is back with one of the most breathtaking albums of 1999, "PRELUDE TO A GRAND LOVE STORY." Featuring remixes by St. Etienne and Dimitri From Paris, "PRELUDE TO A GRAND LOVE STORY" is sure to keep the underground overcrowded with bodies! http://www.atlantic-records.com/kid_loco *NEW VIDEOS FROM SOUTH PARK, SUGAR RAY, AND KID ROCK ON INSTAVID* Tune into INSTAVID this weekend and check out some new videos! Recent additions to the online video channel include "What Would Brian Boitano Do," the new single from "SOUTH PARK: BIGGER, LONGER AND UNCUT," "Someday," the second single from Sugar Rays's new album "14:59," and "Bawitdaba," from Kid Rock's "DEVIL WITHOUT A CAUSE." Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hey Everyone, Well everything has gone according to plan and the shirts are being made in LARGE quantities as we speak. When i made the order and got a bill for over $1000 dollars i was surprised to see just how much it would all cost, that was an awful lot of money but i certainly had it all. :O I will be picking up the shirts from the company on the 2nd of July which is 2 days later than i would have liked to pick them up...but everyone is going to just have to deal with that (hehehe). Ok so I will start packaging them up the day i get them and start sending them out the next day using US Priority Mail. Those of you that got your payments in early are sure to get a shirt soon after the 4th of july weekend. I do however have over 90 shirts to send out if not more so those of you that got your payments to me around the last days may not be get your shirt till the later part of July. I will be trying VERY hard to make it so that i have mailed all the shirts by the second week of July. Ok so that is about it for now except one more small thing.... Not very many people ordered the XXX-Large shirts but those of you that did i have some news for you. All the other size shirts are "Navy Blue" in color but that color was not available in the XXXL. So for JUST the XXXL size the color of the shirt is more of a "Royal Blue" color, which in my opinion almost looks better than the darker color but i hope you all can deal with that since the order has already been made and there isnt a thing i can do about it now :-) Thanks Rich Long Project Leader From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Sat Jun 26 09:28:49 1999 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id JAA28112 for jewel-news-outgoing; Sat, 26 Jun 1999 09:27:02 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <199906261327.JAA28112@smoe.org> Date: Thu, 24 Jun 1999 15:58:41 +0200 From: "michiel" To: jewel-news@smoe.org Subject: Jewel-News: * Jewel Dutch EDA tape offer still open for fans Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk hello Every day angel Jewelfans, You can still obtain your copy of my first dutch every day angels tape.. Just got back from the Bakersfield Jewel concert, first stop of the US tour. I guess this was the wrong year to move out of SoCal and away from two Jewel shows this weekend, including one in my hometown of Irvine. Anyway, arrived home at 2:30am (!) after driving 290 miles back to Sacramento. Here's the setlist, including some random notes and taping glitches, for tonight's (6/25) show.... Steve Poltz opened.... setlist for Jewel should be correct :) Near You Always Deep Water What's Simple is True Hands Jupiter (new version) - -announced the single is out tomorrow (6/26) and to call radio stations to get airplay- You Were Meant For Me Enter From the East - -Jewel asked the crowd to be quiet for this song, but the usual jerks just didn't shut up, Jewel had to wait for an extra minute or so before starting again- Morning Song Cold Song - -jokingly introed as a "very deep, very philosophical song.... to the tune of a polka"- Barcelona Life Uncommon Foolish Games Down So Long Do You - -doh!! I had to stop taping for most of this song cause the ushers actually looked at everyone's ticket in my row. Someone got displaced from their real seat and was none too happy about it. Anyone with this song and the next on tape, drop me a line.- I Will Take You There - -is this still the title?- Love Me Just Leave Me Alone Who Will Save Your Soul - -with a HUGE extended riff and banter between Jewel and guitarist Doug Pettibone, with Doug mimicing variations of Jewel's scat beats. This is by far the longest I have ever heard WWSYS played.- +Encore+ I believe this is Jewel solo Absence of Fear Angel Standing By - -again the wait for the audience to quiet down leads to the few hecklers to continue yelling and delay the start of this song for a minute or so.- Enjoy the shows this weekend, for all those attending!!! :) - -Steve (the DAT angel) Email: or Cafe Jewel: http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/Studios/6262/ From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Sat Jun 26 11:15:50 1999 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id LAA29505 for jewel-news-outgoing; Sat, 26 Jun 1999 11:12:01 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <199906261512.LAA29505@smoe.org> Date: Sat, 26 Jun 1999 02:40:52 -0700 From: sinjin@nexgate.net (sinjin) To: jewel-news@smoe.org Subject: Jewel-News: * Review: Bakersfield, CA 06-25-99 Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Here is the set list for the first US concert of Steve Poltz's "Distilled Spirits" tour. "10 Chances" "I'm Just a Chair" "Everything About You" "ABC's" "Silver Lining" "Centennial Arena in Bakerfield" "Waterfalls" "I Love You, I Adore You, What Will It Take For an Encore?" "Impala" "Star Wars Song" Before Steve came out the stage was decorated with a purple velvet backdrop, a wooden stool, and a crate covered with a blanket. The crate was adorned with a hand-fan, what looked to be a small teddy bear, two wine glasses, and the centerpiece was a Barbie-like doll with a blue dress. Steve came out in a blue jacket and blue pants with a red shirt underneath and a black undershirt and black boots. For most of his set Steve was on stage alone, however he was accompanied by one or two instruments (a guitar and what I guess was a slide guitar). In addition a lucky, lovely lady from the crowd named Brandy joined Steve on stage for "ILYIAYWWITFAN". That's when he let the audience know the reason for the two wine glasses. Steve filled the glasses with a red wine and asked for one female member of the audience to join him on stage. Brandy made it on stage and quickly downed one of the glasses of wine and gave Steve a few kisses in exchange. So if you see some wine glasses on stage at his next show (and you're of legal drinking age, of course) then be prepared to quickly run on stage when Steve asks for a girl. "IJAC" was dedicated to all the chairs in the world, how sweet. "CAIB" was a little diddy he made up on the spot, as he is legendary for. The highlight of Poltz's set was "Waterfalls". He talked about how he was in love with Lisa "Left Eye" Lopez and how she burned down her boyfriend's house. The crowd was screaming when he burst into the rap part of the song. His set lasted about 40 minutes, and Steve closed with "Star Wars Song" and he got much of the audience to growl like Chewbacca during the chorus. Now on to the set list for the first US concert of Jewel's "Spirit" tour. "Near You Always" (green) "Deep Water"* (blue) "What's Simple is True"* (orange) "Hands"* (white) "Jupiter"* (orange, yellow) "You Were Meant For Me"* (red) "Enter From The East" (green, purple) "Morning Song" (yellow, purple, orange) "Cold Song" (red, purple) "Barcelona"* (fire, red, white) "Life Uncommon"* (blue) "Foolish Games" (white) "Down So Long"* (yellow, purple) "Do You"* (purple, peach) "Down"* (rainbow) "Love Me Just Leave Me Alone"* (aqua) "Who Will Save Your Soul"* (red, blue) ENCORE: "Absence of Fear" (green) "Angel Standing By" (white) END SET *with band Before Jewel came out, the purple backdrop parted to reveal a movie screen with www.jeweljk.com being promoted. Gone was Poltz's stool and crate with toys on top. Three cameras were focused on Jewel. One stage front in the center, another stage left, and the third was in front of the sound table. Her show started with a picture of Jewel as a child on the screen as Jewel began singing "NYA" a capella in the dark. As soon as the music started the lights came on and the crowd erupted. Throughout her performance each song was punctuated by a color scheme that matched the mood of the song. The colors are listed above next to each song. In addition, the three cameras were used to project a larger than life picture of Jewel on the screen behind her. Before "Jupiter", Jewel told the audience that she's remaking it and asked them to request it when the single is released. Jewel and Steve Poltz shared a mic during "YWMFM" and were almost as close as in the video. Before she sang "EFTE" Jewel requested that the audience be quite. After a few idiots stopped shouting (I guess they wanted everyone in the arena to know where the stupid people were) the arena stayed very quiet throughout most of the song. Kinda made me wish we had Dr. Evil on stage to say, "WWW dot zipp-it dot com...dot org." "Barcelona" was again one of the highlights of the show. The song started out with just a massive blast of bass from the drums. You could feel the boom throughout the song. The lighting was excellent throughout this song as it matched the mood perfectly. During the sullen parts, it looked like a fire with the red lights hitting the smoke, but during the chorus the white lights drowned out the dispair and brightened up the stage. Of course, Jewel's voice was amazing as well! And so were the musicians, especially the synth/piano solo. After "Life Uncommmon" which I really payed much attention to on the CD until hearing it live tonight, Jewel told the crowd that this was her first time in Bakersfield and got a loud crowd reaction. "Down so Long" was another great moment in the show. During the sad parts, Jewel's sullen movements coupled with the purple color created a somber feeling that contrasted with the more upbeat chorus of the song where Jewel became more animated and the lighting changed to a bright yellow. Jewel began to rock out to "Do You", shouting several of the lines. But she really hit full stride during "Down". I can't say how much I love this song! During much of the show the movie screen maintained a horse theme with overexposed pictures of horses running down cliffs, etc. But during "Down" images of a steel horse were shown. I'm talking motorcycles...Harley Davidson! Put this song on her next CD and anyone who ever said Jewel can't rock will have to smoke her tailpipe! By now the audience had already rushed the stage and people began dancing on their seats! This continued as Jewel and the band rocked through "LMJLMA". Jewel grabbed an electric guitar and jammed. The synth player keyed out an awesome 'harmonica' solo that got even Steve Poltz into it as Poltz played with the crowd by pointing to the musician. Jewel seemed to really be enjoying herself and had fun with the song screaming out, "You ain't nothing but a TURTLE NECK!" Once again the light show captured the feel perfectly. "WWSYS" was a full on scat-fest! Jewel said only about half of the actual words, the rest was scat, scat, scat. Reminiscent of the HGH show, Jewel battled the guitar with her scatting a line and the guitar matching it; then the tables were turned as Jewel had to match the notes the guitar made. It was amazing! Jewel served up an ample supply of "If the kitty gets hungry/wants milk, needs sleep/etc...it goes 'meow, meow, meow.'" This is something you have to see live! Jewel finished off by introducing the band and Steve jumped the song to a close. That ended the scheduled set. But the crowd wanted more and after some pleading she came out for an encore. A cute picture of Jewel as a child sitting at her desk was shown as she began singing "AoF". Again Jewel got the crowd silent before singing "ASB." That concluded the first stop in the American leg of the "Spirit Tour". Overall it was a great performance! Jewel's talent really showed through in "WWSYS". I've heard that song so many times and still she continues to impress me with a new variation. I think she could easily release a CD with only "WWSYS" in its many variations. One improvement I would like to see though is for Jewel to spice up the stage a little like Poltz did with his crate and toys. Just add something to make it more personal, like she did with the flowers in tours of old. Another disappointment for me was that I only met one other EDA, I hope to see more of you in San Diego. On a sad note, I did talk to two locals and they both told me that a young boy was buried today who drowned in the fountain outside the Centennial Arena. I said a prayer for the family of the boy while waiting by the fountain. Just the lifeguard in me I guess, I hate to hear about senseless drownings. This was the second one in a week for me. ------------------------------ From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Sat Jun 26 19:37:52 1999 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id TAA08262 for jewel-news-outgoing; Sat, 26 Jun 1999 19:37:36 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <199906262337.TAA08262@smoe.org> Date: Sat, 26 Jun 1999 10:32:28 -0700 From: "Jason Grovert" To: jewel-news@smoe.org Subject: Jewel-News: 1999 US Tour Talk Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk I have setup a discussion board with EVERY scheduled Tour stop for Jewel for her US Tour.
