Once at www.jeweljk.com, click "galaxy" & onto "headline news". We included some HGH information, an accurate setlist as well as the exact lyrical changes to "Hands" that had everyone laughing at the show. ;-) There's also new additions & corrections to the website calendar & several new items available at the Jewel Webstore including the 1999 Tour Books so many have asked me about. We also have plans to add a "tour date information" service to the website that even those of you without web access can utilize. It'll be a new "@jeweljk.com" email address with auto-responder that will send you the current schedule 24 hours a day. We should have this functioning shortly & I'll post the correct address asap. This should permanently eliminate all the tour date inquiries, even from those without web access. :-) Also, I wanted to pass on an idea that is timely once again. When Jewel's first album was released, it was THE EDAs that made a very appreciated difference by calling radio stations & requesting they play Jewel's singles. Surprisingly, "Down So Long" seems to be kinda slow on catching on to radio programmers. I'm still seeing posts from people hearing it on the radio for the first time & several have written me saying they have never heard it on the radio. I'd encourage EDAs to call your local stations & request it! I remember when the EDAs enthusiasticly called radio stations across the country & it definitely made a difference. Go for it! :-) Also keep watching for EDAFoundation posts. They're doing great things these days & would sure appreciate your participation. They'll also keep you updated on the "1999 Jewel Birthday Project", which I'm told many EDAs are participating in. Of course all volunteer work is wonderful whether you talk/write about it or not, but for those who would like to share your experiences with Jewel & each other, watch for the EDAF posts & join in! Otherwise, contact them at EDAFinfo@aol.com. They'd enjoy hearing from you. Not much else is new that hasn't been posted. I look forward to continued reports from European fans. Please send in reviews of the shows. We'd still enjoy including some of the most informative reviews on Jewel's website as the tour progresses. I'll continue including all the setlists on the site for your enjoyment. I'm going to try to finish up the New Zealand, Malaysia, Singapore & Japan setlists this weekend & I'll try to get them up on the site early next week. I'll also try to get you Nedra's Wellington New Zealand story that I promised earlier this week. Likely this weekend or early next week. I think we'll call it "Attack of The Psycho Fan?!". Sounds intriguing, huh? This interview will air in two parts. The first part will probably air next Friday night May 7th following Conan O'Brien on NBC's "Friday Night Videos". It so happens the truly incredible Patty Griffin is the musical guest on Conan that night, so check her out as well! This is her "major network performance debut" after years of powerful music. Patty was Jewel's warm-up at Jewelstock three years ago & kicked all our asses! Go Patty Go! :-) OK, back to the two part Jewel interview: The second part of the interview will be broadcast sometime during the first two weeks of May on NBC's "Later Show". We don't know exactly when on part two, but if I hear more, I'll let ya know. Please do the same. I came back to New England & plantlife everywhere woke up during the week I was gone. Dublin rocks once again for the May Bank Holiday Weekend, as the Heineken Green Energy Festival brings bands, DJs and music industry bigwigs together for a four-day music and tippling extravaganza. Dublin Castle is the outdoor venue for headlining acts UB40, The Beautiful South, Catatonia and The Cardigans. Meanwhile, the Olympia hosts gigs by Mercury Rev, Reef, Jewel and Faithless, and the SFX Centre welcomes the return of The Happy Mondays. There's a free pub trail in Temple Bar and a Band Challenge Final in the Temple Bar Music Centre for a grand prize worth £15,000. If guys with guitars don't spin your decks, then The Globe and Pravda will provide beats from DJs Mani, Jim Carroll, Scottie McNaughton and the Skint Under 5s of Big Beat Boutique fame. adrian. the irsh 'green with envy' eda in exile From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Sat May 1 09:36:20 1999 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id JAA28379 for jewel-news-outgoing; Sat, 1 May 1999 09:35:54 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <199905011335.JAA28379@smoe.org> Date: Fri, 30 Apr 1999 09:29:05 EDT From: NeOblCar@aol.com To: jewel-news@smoe.org Subject: Jewel-News: Re: Jewel tour and some basic information! Big cheers and props to the J-team and Jewel for keeping prices low for fans!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! << Unfortunately, I'm working all day Saturday and I can't find this out for myself. I'd really like to go, but I feel that quite possibly the only left over seats might not be too great. >> I am still confident that there will be good seats left after Saturday morning's sales. Standing in line for wristbands yesterday convinced me even more that Jewel is not a main draw in this year's line-up. Which means that while people are gobbling up Brandy tickets, Jewel's show will remain quietly sitting there for us angels. Since she has a "one-price" for all seats, then your right that getting Orchestra level is probably out of the question. My advice for the best seats is buy one ticket at a time. You'll always get a better seat filling up the holes and you'll get the chance to meet new people. NOTE TO ALL PNC BUYERS ON SAT: This will be the first year that TicketMaster outlets are accepting credit cards for the PNC Shows. Plan for the lines to take an extra long time!!! Which means: (1) web/phone based buying might be the way to go if you don't have a wristband, and (2) that I really believe there will still be good tickets left late. Call me an optimist ... but if you believe it will happen, it will. << Thirdly, I'm also interested in getting some Angelfood, but I just don't know where to turn If anyone can help me in any way, I'd be greatful, so please write me back!>> Just write to tlcathome@aol.com, she'll set you up :-) Now, all we need to know is how do we get Steve out to our house for a little warm-up set before the show???? :-) -- Rob From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Sat May 1 09:37:20 1999 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id JAA28410 for jewel-news-outgoing; Sat, 1 May 1999 09:36:36 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <199905011336.JAA28410@smoe.org> Date: Fri, 30 Apr 1999 09:54:02 EDT From: Tlcathome@aol.com To: jewel-news@smoe.org Subject: Jewel-News: PNC show tix on sale tomorrow - reminder Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Just wanted to remind everyone in the central NJ area that aren't heading up to Woodstock that the PNC tix for Jewel's July 23 show go on sale tomorrow - along with the majority of their program. I hope I can tell it with half of Nedra's flair, at least. I think so. Time for something different for a change. Here goes. Attack Of The Psycho Fan?! (A true story) Part 1 (The set up) Recently, while Jewel's 1999 Tour took a swing through New Zealand, Jewel's mom & manager Nedra joined the tour for a few weeks. One of those days, while they were in Wellington New Zealand, Jewel was relaxing in her hotel room, Nedra was in another part of the hotel in her room & various staff were in their respective rooms. Jewel's room phone rings & she picks up the phone to say "Hello?", but gets no immediate response on the line. Just some stange noises so she hangs up. Her room phone rings again & once again she says "Hello?". This time she hears muffled noises & the sounds of someone breathing erratically while gasping & making weird & scary sounds into the phone! "Damn, some psycho fan somehow got my room number", she thinks to herself. "What to do?" Jewel calls the front desk & reports the disturbing calls to the front desk manager & asks that hotel security trace the call they put through to her room. The hotel checks the phone call register & informs Jewel that no outside phone calls have been put through to her room at all. Hmmmmm. This is getting wierder & Jewel assures them that disturbing calls were put through!! Hotel security tells Jewel the only calls they see to her room recently were "room to room" calls from within the hotel! Feeling more anxiety, Jewel thinks to herself, "The psycho fan is IN THE HOTEL & knows where I am!" She asks that the front desk immediately determine which room the disturbing phone call came from. As tension increases, Jewel waits for the hotel to check into this & she has Lee, one of her assistants sit with her while the hotel is checking things out. Then the hotel informs Jewel that the "room to room calls" in question came from Nedra's room!! Shaken & knowing Nedra hasn't called, Jewel & Lee freak out & realize "OH MY GOD, THE PSYCHO FAN IS IN NEDRA'S ROOM & THEY GOT NEDRA!!!!" Jewel & Lee jump up, dart out of her room & down the hallway to rescue Nedra! They pound on the door, find it unlocked, open the door to discover....... (To be continued, hehehe....) Part 2 (The Punch Line) will be sent as soon as Part 1 hits the list. Do I have your attention? ;-) MrBB From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Sun May 2 18:17:27 1999 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id SAA04782 for jewel-news-outgoing; Sun, 2 May 1999 18:17:14 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <199905022217.SAA04782@smoe.org> Date: Sun, 02 May 1999 18:11:41 -0400 To: jewel@smoe.org From: Mike Connell Subject: Jewel-News: OK, so I lied - Re: Jewel in todays' USA Weekend Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk I wrote: >This is just a reminder that according to last weekends' edition of USA >Weekend, in todays' edition of the USA Weekend Sunday supplement there is >supposed to be a "Mothers and daughters" article that talks about four >celebrities and their daughters or mothers, including Jewel and Lenedra. OK...maybe not then :-( Friggin newspapers! :-( Of course (and I should not be suprised) there was no such article/interview in today's USA Weekend. The website for this publications says "next week", which is exactly what LAST WEEKS' paper said. I've got to admit though, when I read it in last weeks paper that the "Mothers And Daughters" article woul be in "next weeks' " edition, I thought it was strange, since it would have been a week before Mothers' Day. So, it seems obvious now that last weeks edition was in error, and the article will be in many USA Sunday papers next Sunday, May 9th :-) Guess I should wait to see it in print before I post about it, eh? :-) Mike - the angel with egg on his face From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Sun May 2 19:03:28 1999 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id TAA05814 for jewel-news-outgoing; Sun, 2 May 1999 19:02:42 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <199905022302.TAA05814@smoe.org> From: ABershaw@aol.com Date: Sun, 2 May 1999 18:57:44 EDT Subject: Jewel-News: MrBB-Attack Of The Psycho Fan?!- Conclusion To: jewel@smoe.org Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hi again, As promised, here's the conclusion to Nedra's charming little true story, hehehe... Part 2 (The Punch Line) ...Nedra is on the floor in a dazed state, laughing, barely able to talk, but otherwise OK. She explains to Jewel & Lee what happened & all collapse in hysterical laughter. The End WHAT HAPPENNED?? Oh yeah, THAT's a reasonable question, hehe.... It turns out, Nedra had slipped in the bathroom, banged her head on the doorknob & knocked herself out! Reaching consciousness, she crawled to the phone & called Jewel for help, but in her dazed & disoriented state COULDN'T TALK when Jewel answered the phone! It'll save me a lot of headaches & I know thats important to you! ;-) In order to help EDAs, I post most of the tour dates to you & include them on Jewel's website BEFORE most venues release ticket information to the public. I've let EDAs know tour dates early for a few years now & I want to continue doing it, but I need you to do your own followup work. Every day now, I get anywhere from 25 to 50 emails asking me when tickets go on sale to a specific venue & prices on tickets (& even quite a few asking me how good the seats are in section C row G seats 18 & 19 at a specific venue! LOL!). Many EDAs are on the right track but then write me for the venue phone number, too. I cannot possibly keep track of these kinds of details for shows all over the world & cannot answer these specific questions. These emails will go unanswered, so please, rather than write me, call the venue or your local ticket agency for specifics. Many venues in North America have websites now. Check it out. For venue phone numbers, simply call directory information in the venue's city. That easy. If the venue doesn't have the information you want, then you must be patient until they do. Such is the price of knowing first. Beginning later this week, Jewel's website calendar will be updated every day. Current information will be posted accurately. Any information not yet posted will be when its confirmed. Bookmark the calendar for your convenience. We'll also soon have an email address set up with "tour date" auto-responder. For those without web access, this will keep you updated whenever you like. I'm trying my best to get you the tour dates well in advance for most shows, but you have to take it from there. Post what you learn. It'll help others. Thanks for your understanding on this issue, MrBB From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Wed May 5 12:11:43 1999 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id MAA08937 for jewel-news-outgoing; Wed, 5 May 1999 12:11:26 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <199905051611.MAA08937@smoe.org> From: ABershaw@aol.com Date: Tue, 4 May 1999 16:30:07 EDT To: jewel-news@smoe.org Subject: Jewel-News: MrBB-Canadian Dates & Upcoming TV updates/Radio Requests for DSL Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hi all, Jewel's website calendar will now be updated on a daily basis, usually 7 days a week. If you have any confirmed concert date questions or upcoming TV questions, have a look at www.jeweljk.com for accurate scheduling. I corrected several dates today, added some more TV broadcast info & the upcoming Canadian venues & dates. More will be forthcoming. Bookmark it & check it for daily updates & changes. :-) Also, I wanted to pass on an idea again. I remember when the EDAs enthusiasticly called radio stations everywhere & it definitely made a difference. Go for it! Thanks! Mike :-) www.observer.co.uk Jewel in the rough She's a guitar-playing, million-selling, denim-wearing, honest to goodness trailer-trash icon. She went from dirt poor to superstar in one effortless jump. Now she's turned to poetry... Sunday May 2, 1999 'Why are you smiling like that? Why is that interesting? How am I supposed to answer a question like that? Is my tone of voice disappointing you? Am I not being generous enough? Why did you choose that particular word? Where is the question coming from?' It is normal practice in interviews for the journalist to ask the questions and for the celebrity to respond with answers. But, as in many other respects, Jewel Kilcher does not conform to normal practice. The 24-year-old Alaskan singer/songwriter is semi-famous in this country. Most people have heard of her, but few could name any of her songs, let alone hum one. People are vaguely aware that she grew up in extreme poverty, with no electricity or running water; that she used to sing with her dad in biker bars, and at one point lived in a caravan in California; that she dated Sean Penn; that her first album sold 10 million copies (fewer than 100,000 of them in Britain); that she often yodels at the end of her concerts. Now there is another piece of amusing news to add to Jewel's half-fame: her first volume of poetry, A Night Without Armor, has sold two million copies in the United States, making it the biggest-selling poetry book in American history. Sitting in an 'English-style' tea room in a hotel in Japan – where she is midway through a world tour that visits Britain next week – Jewel says she was surprised by the book's success, but no more so than she was by the success of her debut album, Pieces of You, which she dismissively refers to as 'student artwork'. 'I find it freakish that my first album was so big, don't you? I mean, a record like that should never have sold 10 million.' She's right. Pieces of You is a collection of 14 mostly acoustic songs with barely three choruses between them – and a lot of overwrought lyrics. Its main appeal, as Jewel recognises, was its 'sincerity'. Released in 1995, it initially sold few copies, but months spent touring (Jewel famously played 500 shows in a year) sent it slowly up the charts. By 1997, Jewel was a fully fledged star, appearing on the covers of Rolling Stone and Time. Last year's follow-up, 'Spirit', was a much stronger album, but has sold a 'mere' five million copies so far. Jewel seems unfazed by this. 'What happened to me was kinda like being Homecoming Queen for a year,' she says. 'If I want to have a career that lasts 30 or 40 years, it's bound to have ebbs and valleys and dips.' Her role model, she claims, is Neil Young. But Young never wrote a best-selling poetry book. Nor did he star in a Hollywood movie – unlike Jewel, who was cast in Ang Lee's forthcoming film, Ride With the Devil, despite having no acting experience at all. 'I didn't know anything,' she admits. 'I didn't even know they shot scenes more than once.' So why was she chosen? 'My character grew up lower-class, working the earth with oxen, ploughing, stuff like that. So I guess my background…' she trails off self-consciously (she is sick to death of talking about her Alaskan childhood). 'But the main reason Ang wanted me was my teeth.' Jewel has crooked teeth. This may seem unremarkable, but among American celebrities, it is a bit like having three legs. Jewel's teeth have become a kind of symbol – of her 'unspoiled' upbringing, of her naturalness. Her teeth, and her undemonstrative taste in clothing. For our interview, she wears a baggy black sweatshirt, old blue jeans and a black wool hat that she pulls down over her eyes whenever she doesn't like a question (which is quite often). In the song 'Barcelona', Jewel describes herself as 'super-paranoid'. It turns out she's not kidding. She seems to detect a hidden agenda in almost every inquiry. After an hour or so, her responses become so ludicrously wary that I can't help laughing. You seem very analytical, I say. 'Am I analytical? Yeah.' She pauses. 'I feel very uncomfortable,' she says finally, and blushes. Why do you feel uncomfortable? 'I don't know… interviews are tough. You begin to feel so incredibly retarded, talking about yourself as if you're important. I'm a pretty natural person – I create pretty effortlessly. So when I turn a magnifying glass on myself, everything becomes disjointed. It's an odd experience.' After this mini-crisis, Jewel relaxes a bit and talks less self-consciously about her early days, playing in coffee bars in San Diego. On her first tour, she supported Peter Murphy, former singer with the goth band Bauhaus. How was that? 'Well, it was a challenge. A lot of kids with fangs.' We laugh. And then I ruin it by asking her what she thinks of Phoebe from Friends… Five hours later, backstage at the 1,000-capacity venue in downtown Osaka where she will play tonight's concert, Jewel is taking part in a meet-and-greet with a shy bunch of Japanese fans. She looks awkward, but grins her way through it. Afterwards, she comes up and fixes me with a cold, unwavering gaze. 'So. Phoebe, huh? I asked someone about her [Jewel claimed to have seen only one episode of Friends] and they said she was a real ditz. I feel insulted. Is that what you think of me? Do you think I'm a ditz?' The PR, sensing an ugly scene, intervenes to explain that Phoebe is by far the nicest and most natural of the six friends. 'The others are all like cartoon characters. She's the one people really respond to.' And she's really creative and spiritual, I add. 'Yeah,' says Jewel sarcastically, 'and she sits in a bar and sings about a smelly dog.' A smelly cat, I correct her. 'Whatever.' Jewel is not really like Phoebe at all – she's too grounded, too sensible, too hard-working – but for some reason, the comparison bugs her. Brady, the drummer in Jewel's band, walks past, and I ask him what he thinks of Phoebe. 'Hey, man, I'm not getting involved in that shit!' he says, looking petrified. For the first time in her career, Jewel is touring with a band – two guitarists, a keyboard player, a drummer and a bassist, all of them men. She is flirty with all five – asking one guitarist to kiss her neck, massaging the shoulders of the other, stroking the drummer's hand – but each responds with a kind of paternal reverence: the way the Scarecrow, the Lion and the Tin Man treated Dorothy. I imagined she had known them for years, but it turns out they had only met six weeks before. The other person who always accompanies Jewel on tour, apart from her English manager, is Lee, a friend from Alaska whom she has known since she was 16. Lee is tall, camp and funny. I ask him what his role is on tour, and he says: 'I do things for Jewel.' These things include keeping her healthy (he carries around B12 vitamin pills and homeopathic eye drops) and well-fed. Japan, apparently, is a nightmare for food. 'I mean, if you're into dried fish heads and icky, gooey things that look like eyeballs, then I guess it's good,' says Lee. Backstage in Osaka, Jewel tucks into a big box of fried chicken. >From where I'm sitting, the gig seems fine. As with most Japanese concerts, the fans are completely silent during the songs, and then applaud wildly when each one is over. Jewel starts out quiet and intense, and becomes looser and rockier as the night wears on. Her voice is wonderful – clear and emotive, with a depth not even hinted at on her debut album. She wears black leather trousers and a top that airs her Monroe-like decolletage. Despite reviews to the contrary, however, she doesn't really dance and looks ill at ease without a guitar in her hands. She does not yodel at the end. It is only 9.30pm when the concert ends, but Jewel looks shattered. 'That was weird,' she says. 'Right from the start, I could tell there was a bad vibe. Plus I was tired. I was not in a good head-space before I went on.' Jewel goes off to have a shower, then arrives at the hotel bar looking refreshed. As the gin and tonics are lined up on the bar, she gets gradually more sociable and giggly – despite the fact that she doesn't touch a drop. 'Look at me, I'm really hyper,' she says after half an hour. 'Imagine what I'd be like if I did start boozing.' Finally, she starts to talk freely, without dissecting every other word. She tells me about rubbing Bob Dylan's nose ('He just presented it to me – it's a great nose!'); about the surreal exploits of her maternal grandfather ('He invented the first snowmobile'); about her childhood experience of slaughtering cows ('You had to shoot them in the head – it was never easy'). She talks about her mum, with whom she has set up a scary-sounding charity organisation called Higher Ground for Humanity (motto: 'Be the difference that makes a difference'), and about her dad (a 'musical entertainer'), who used to call her 'my little Emmylou' because Emmylou Harris was his heroine. Jewel invited him to play on stage with her and Emmylou one night, and he wept. We even talk about her love life. She's been single for 'about a month', she says, after a relationship that lasted 'about a year'. How does it feel to be single? 'It's a huge relief, to be honest. It was getting really heavy towards the end. He's a great guy, but… this is not a job that's conducive to romantic relationships. I've only had two relationships, post-fame – if that makes any sense – and both those guys had trouble with the fact that I was the one with the career, getting all the attention, making all the money. I think that's hard for men.' Were either of them celebrities? 'No. Maybe that's the problem. I always thought it was a bit odd that celebrities chose to go out with each other, but maybe they're the only ones who can understand. It's funny: people always look at this job and think it's so glamorous. They think I'm always out on the town with all these handsome men. But it's so not like that. I never meet men.' By 1am, Jewel is lounging next to Brady, singing Public Enemy lyrics in a breathy, girly voice, and blaming me for her lousy gig. 'I was standing there, playing my guitar, and all I could think was: "Is this art or entertainment?" God damn it, I'm still not sure – you really screwed me up!' Someone offers her a choice of sandwiches, and Jewel wrinkles her nose with indecision. 'Now, let me think,' she says. 'What would Phoebe do in this situation?' * Jewel plays Southampton Guildhall, 4 May; London Albert Hall, 5 May; Cambridge Corn Exchange, 6 May; Glasgow City Hall, 8 May; Manchester Academy, 9 May; Warwick Arts Centre, 10 May; Bristol Colston Hall, 11 May. Once upon a time, Jewel released her second single "You Were Meant For Me" and made a new video for the song starring Steve Poltz. However, neither MTV nor the radio stations would take the initiative to play YWMFM in heavy rotation. Jewel was caught in a Catch-22: The radio stations were waiting for the video to be played on MTV and MTV was waiting for the song to gain popularity on the radio. To overcome this roadblock, Hiranya came to the EDA's asking for a favor. Her request was simple, call your local radio stations and request YWMFM! As you all are aware, YWMFM proceeded to climb the charts on both radio and TV. All it needed was a little push from the EDA's to get it started, and it went on to become the #1 song for 1997 on two prominent national charts! I believe that the phone calls made by the EDA's contributed to the early success of YWMFM, and I also believe that our efforts can also help Jewel's latest single "Down So Long" gain airplay. Mr. BB has requested that we call our local radio stations and request DSL so I have decided to spearhead this initiative. The well-known EDA Jared compiled a list of radio stations across the country that play Jewel's music which I have posted below. This list was last updated in November of 1996, so some of the phone numbers may by inaccurate. Please email me (not the list) with: 1. Any new radio stations (that have played Jewel in the past) 2. Corrected phone numbers 3. Radio stations you hear DSL being played on! My email address is Sinjin@nexgate.net please include DSL in the subject so I can filter the messages better. Please call your local radio station and request DSL! "Down So Long" came on, so I watched, and then waited for Jewel's next video to come on, since they show two of an artists' video consecutively on the show. Well, the next video started, and I figured I had tuned in after Jewel's first video and they were moving to another artist, since I didn't recognize it. Well, when they put the video credits up, I soon realized that what I was seeing was the original 1995 Sean-Penn-directed version of "You Were Meant for Me." Needless to say, I was very excited, since I had only seen a clip of the original video before now. I wish I had been taping it. Anyway, it had a very different motif than the 1996 version, and it was creative, although not as creative as the more recent version, IMO. It was a good change of pace from the more well-known one, however, and it was interesting to see some early Jewel. I don't know if they replay the same episode of "Back 2 Back," but check your TV Guides, all. -Salinger99, The Philosopher Angel From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Thu May 6 23:49:52 1999 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id XAA28807 for jewel-news-outgoing; Thu, 6 May 1999 23:48:55 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <199905070348.XAA28807@smoe.org> From: ABershaw@aol.com Date: Thu, 6 May 1999 11:27:39 EDT To: jewel-news@smoe.org Subject: Jewel-News: MrBB-Jewel's Website News Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hi all, A bunch of good information for you today: The photo gallery on Jewel's website was totally redesigned yesterday & I know you'll find it much easier to navigate now. We'll also be adding all the New Zealand, Malaysia, Singapore & Japan setlists (for both Jewel & Steve Poltz's sets) by early next week. All the Australian setlists are available now. The Jewel Store was also recently redesigned for much easier navigation & you'll find several NEW items available including the 1999 Spirit World Tour Books. These are available only from the website store & at the concerts. If you visit the website store & still have a question related to ordering or JMerch, you can recieve personal attention to your question by writing JMerch at customerservice@jeweljk.com. ...And finally, from some of the email I'm recieving, apparently some of you don't believe Mike, but its true. Those recordings, as good as they are, are only a glimpse of Joy a few years ago. The music she's writing & performing now far surpasses those earlier recordings. Here's Jewel and Nedra's feature article from the cover story, entitled "Mothers & Daughters": "Trade poems on voice mail" It's hard to believe that just seven years ago Jewel Kilcher, now 24, was living out of a van while she tried to make it as a folk singer on the coffeehouse scene. In a truly amazing act of motherly love, Jewel's mother, Nedra Carroll, now 49, moved into her own van. Now, Nedra is Jewel's manager. Not only are they business partners; they share a house--not on wheels. Daughter: Jewel "She knew that for me to go for my dream I needed to have no overhead and just sing. To show her support, [she moved into her own van] to show her solidarity. I found the Christmas card from before I got signed [to a record deal]. It'll sound really silly. I mean, we were really poor. The letter was just saying, 'I'll always take care of you.' When I got signed to the label, the most exciting part for me is that we are partners, 50-50. Everything gets split equally because she's as much a part of my career as I am." Mother: Nedra "Given the nature of our lives, the thing Jewel and I do most regularly is talk on the phone. We enjoy it. Occasionally, we can't so we leave each other voice mails. We share: If I've written a new poem or she's written a new poem, we leave the poem on voice mail. We do quite a bit of that. Phone contact is our most regular and important way we stay in touch. Even when she's at home--we live together--and she's on her side of the house, she'll call me and we'll talk for hours. And then we'll laugh and we'll say, 'Why are we talking on the phone?'" Cheers all, J.E. Of course, there are some new ones as MrBB mentioned Friday. PLEASE NOTE, there are MORE North American dates to be announced for late August through September and perhaps into October (just a hunch on my part), so PLEASE sit tight if your general area (like the southern USA states) has not been announced/scheduled yet. It seems to me that this is shaping up to be a quite extensive tour. There ARE more dates to come! :-) I have one request though, as list manager. PRETTY PLEASE (yeah, yeah...OK....with a cherry on top) .....please do not post to the list asking when tickets go on sale etc. I know some of you may wonder why, but we have 1,900 subscribers here and I am easily getting a dozen to two dozen posts some days solely asking about ticket sales. There ARE easy ways of finding this information on your own. Please call the venues, check TicketMaster at http://www.ticketmaster.com, and/or even look for a web site for the venue, or call a local TicketMaster outlet. To aid in finding a web site for a venue, online search engines are very easy to use and can help immensely to find such information....I know (from experience) that more than a few of you have yet to use one, but they can be your best online friend at times :-) My two personal favorites at http://www.hotbot.com and http://www.lycos.com There are many others of course. Give it a try :-) On the other hand, when/if you DO find information on when tickets got on sale for a particular Jewel show, of course please share that info with the list!!! :-) Mike :-) ****** Venue, City, Country/State/Province May 8 City Hall, Glasgow, Scotland 9 The Academy, Manchester, UK 10 Warwick Arts Center, Coventry, UK 11 Colston Hall, Bristol, UK 14 Falconer Theatre, Copenhagen, Denmark 15 Kampnagel-fabrik , Hamburg, Germany 16 HBK, Berlin, Germany 24 Pink Pop Festival, Landgraaf, The Netherlands 26 L'Olympia Theatre, Paris, France 27 Capital, Offenbach, Germany 28 Liedehalle, Stuttgart, Germany 29 Philharmonie, Munich, Germany 31 Kongresshaus, Zurich, Switzerland June 1 Teatro Carcano, Milan, Italy 2 Teatro Colossea, Turin, Italy 3 Fonderie, Modena, Italy 5 Teatro Arriaga, Bilbao, Spain 6 Winterthur Auditorium, Barcelona, Spain NORTH AMERICA TOUR BEGINS! Subject: Jewel-News: ***Houston area EDA gathering!!!*** To: "'Jewel list'" Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk As most of you know by now, Jewel will be in concert at the Woodlands Pavillion just north of Houston on July 10, 1999 @ 8:00pm. The last time she came there was for the Lilith Fair in 1997. We got a small group together and had a mini EDA gathering, I think about 15 EDA's were present. This time around, another gathering is being organized. Nothing very formal, just a little get together of some of the local EDA's who can make it to the show. I believe the gates will open about 7:00pm, maybe a little sooner, so a good time to meet would be at about 7:30pm. A good place is by the statue (figure/sculpture), on the right side of the pavillion. There are two main entrances looking at it from behind the big hill, I'm referring to the right entrance here. So far I've had 6 EDA's tell me they're going, and a couple others who might if they can get tickets. As of this morning, I know there are still some good seats available. As in, the covered reserved section...about half way up, which isn't that far really. So if you want to go, I'd get tickets as soon as possible before they start getting into the uncovered reserved area's....in the event of rain. Then of course there's always the hill, but who wants to sit way up there? Ticket prices are $31.50 for reserved (covered and non-convered), and $24.00 for the lawn, plus all the service charges and taxes. For anyone whose never been to this venue, this is a good place to see Jewel perform. It's not as big as some other outdoor pavillion's, and the acoustic's are fairly good. As opposed to some indoor venue's where you have echo's, etc. If anyone needs help with locating ticket's, directions, a seating chart, etc. go to the ticketmaster web page...all that info is on there. WWW.TICKETMASTER.COM I'll have a full car, but some other's may not, so if you need a ride, it wouldn't hurt to e-mail someone you know is going that's somewhat close to your area. I'll include a list of the names and e-mail addresses I have so far of the EDA's I know are going. Granted this is only 3 days after they've been on sale, so this list will grow alot I'm sure in the weeks to come, being that we still have 2 months before the show. I think we could easily have 20+ EDA's for this. So if anyone has any questions, just write me back and I'll try to help answer them. Here's the list I have so far: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------- Derrick Karacostas dkaracos@utmb.edu Hitchcock, TX Sean Charlston playaboy1@juno.com LaMarque, TX Nicole (no lastname) Qteblond16@aol.com Texas City, TX Amber Reed Amber@pernet.net Bridge City, TX (Beaumont/Port Arthur) Mandy Reed Mandy@pernet.net Bridge City, TX Kim (no lastname) Kkosatka@aol.com Spring, TX Lesley (no lastname) DkookyBaka@aol.com Corpus Christi, TX Maybe's... Anyone interested in attending, let me know so I can add you to the list. Once the date gets closer, we can all start to organize things a little better, and think of other things to do after the show, etc. Thanks, Derrick From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Mon May 10 13:33:10 1999 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id NAA14647 for jewel-news-outgoing; Mon, 10 May 1999 13:32:58 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <199905101732.NAA14647@smoe.org> To: Jewel-News@smoe.org From: riasands@yahoo.com Date: 9 May 99 07:36:02 -0800 Subject: Jewel-News: Jewel Southampton setlist, jewel and cindylee berr Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk and articles To: jewel@smoe.org Sender: owner-jewel@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Sorry this is a bit slow getting on here but I had tro unsubscribe for a bit and had some trouble posting messages so I’m putting all the things I posted over the last week into one big post. Setlist for Southampton Guildhall concert 4th May Steves set: Ten chances Paint the town (I think this was the title) Maybe I’m going to give you up for lent Silver lining The great mystery Star wars song (not too sure of the proper title) Jewel’s set: Near you always Deep water With band: Whats simple is true Hands Jupiter YWMFM (With steve) On own Enter from the east POY story POY Sometimes it be that way Grey Matter With band: Barcelona Life Uncommon Foolish Games Down so long Down Love me just leave me alone Who will save your soul Encore: Absence of fear Angel standing by What a night  …The concert started with Steve’s set obviously and I was really looking forward to seeing him as I’d heard so much about him but other than Silver Lining, I’d never heard anything of his. I was really impressed though and I think everyone else was too judging by the rounds of applause he got at the end of each song. Incidentally I think the concert was sold out but I’m not sure of the capacity of the place. Steve wasn’t too pleased with his bottle of wine that had been left on the stand next to him so he offered it to the first member of the audience who could in 3 words, describe southampton …. I think the winner (but only participant) was ‘piece of shit’ so this guy went up on stage to collect the bottle. Then during his intro story to ‘maybe I’ll give you up for lent’ someone walked up to the front of the stage and stood there waiting for steve to notice him and give him an autograph. I think everyone was pretty surprised by this …as was steve who said ‘my god I’m in the middle of a show for crying out loud’ or something similar, it was really funny and everyone started cheering. Unfortunately I don’t think the show was taped, I met another EDA Chris Groves who I thought was taping the show so I didn’t bother…did anyone else who went manage to tape it? Jewels set was magic right from the off, the lighting was wonderful and the whole thing was so different from when I saw her 18ish months ago in Birmingham, I was surpirsed how little Jewel actually played the guitar herself. She wasn’t too chatty on the whole but she did tell the modelling convention story for pieces of you asked for requests ….First of all I called for race car driver and someone else for little sister but she said she couldn’t remember them anymore so than I shouted for sometimes it be that way which she played…I was pretty ecstatic about that  I thought there was a lot of chemistry between jewel and steve, they seemed to get on really well, during YWMFM Jewel went over to steve and took over the frets of the guitar while steve did the strumming which was really nice. After down so long Jewel called the crowd to come and stand up closer to the front and I managed to get right to the front row, leaning against the stage right in front of Jewel so I managed fingers crossed to get some cracking photos of her, Steve seemed to be enjoying himself doing little dances throughout the last part of the set. It was nice seeing Jewel on electric guitar too, I think it suited her  Overall I think Jewel seemed to be enjoying herself, the crowd really enjoyed themselves I heard people saying it was the best concert they’d been to and they’d not realised how good Jewel actually was. I did manage to grab an autograph from Jewel on my programme as she walked to her tour bus, she signed I think maybe 4 or 5 peoples things, carrying on walking as she did them…that moment all went by pretty quick, I was hoping to catch Steve but they all walked by so fast, hopefully I’ll catch them in Bristol is anyone else going there? I know this post is a bit rambly and I’ve probably missed out loads of stuff which I could write about but I’m a little spaced out at the moment …I’m all drugged up on painkillers cause on my way home from the concert I ran for my train (always make sure your shoelaces are tied) and manage to go flying and do something horrible to my knee and had to go to casualty hehe. Ok well that’s it I think …anyone else off to see Jewel, you’re in for a treat  There is a small Jewel concert review in this months Q magazine I’ve been off the mailing list for a few days so I’m sorry if this is repeated Jewel Alaska-born folk-pop diva (and sometime poet) Jewel arrives in England with a full band, as opposed to her early one-woman-and-her-guitar approach to live performance. Although her set contains a brief acoustic interllude, including requests from the audience, the majority is made up from tracks from her second album, Spirit. Feisty and confident live, Jewel indulges in plenty of onstage vamping and builds up a strong rapport with her predominantly femaie audience through lengthy song introductions and anecdotes. Altogether a more rocking experience than her faintly precious records would suggest It was awarded 2 stars out of 5 I also noticed in the same magazine, an album review for Cindy Lee Berryhill for Living Room 16 Potent acoustic tour de force from left field San Diego singer songwriter. Kick started by a bunch of Internet using Jewel fanatics, the concept of the living room concert, whereby the artist turns up at someones house and does the show right there, has taken off big time among a sub-set of the American indie folk punk fraternity. The sixteenth such performance from Cindy LeeBerryhill took place in San Francisco in front of an invited audience of just 20 select souls. The joshing between song banter heightens the sense of cliquey intimacy , but does threaten to stray the wrong side of rambling over-indulgence. The songs themselves strap jagged and witty observational couplets on top of engagingly hook-laden melodies and winningly explore the space between Berryhill’s acoustic guitar, harmonica and keyboard and Renata Bratts cello. Overall the best of these songs Diane, Damn I wish I was a man, This way up, look at that grin invite strange visions of a counter-cultural Carole Bayer Sager swapping wisecracks with Randy Newman. Best plump up those cushions in readiness for the upcoming UK tour. And this one got 3 stars. Also there was a concert preview in this weeks Bristol evening post prior to Jewels concert next Tuesday Shining Star Alaskan singer songwrite Jewel completes her frist British tour (don’t know how they worked that one out…isn’t this her third set of shows here now?) with a show at the Colston Hall next Tuesday. Jewel Kilcher started her career playing gigs in local coffee-houses in San Diego and this resulted in her being signed by Atlantic Records. Her 1995 debut album Pieces of You went on to sell nearly 10 million copies and this success has been matched by her critically acclimed second album, Spirit. Spirit was produced by Madonna collaborator Patrick Leonard and her backing musicians include Sheryl Crow drummer Brian Mcleod and veteran Afro-Cuban jazz percussionist Luis Conte who has also worked with Madonna. Okie dokes that’s it for now Hi everyone, theres a review in todays newspaper ‘The Times’ on I think page 24 of section 2. Theres no picture or anything but it’s a really good reivew of the albert hall gig, I’ll try type it up if I get the time. Also a preview of Tuesdays show in my local newspaper The Mercury. Its just a small town free paper so its not the most amazing thing in the world so I laughed so hard when I read this cause it’s just so badly written although pretty complimentary…. Theres also a nice quite big pic of Jewel in b/w This ones a gem Music lovers have a chance to see a very special singer on Tuesday May 11th at the Colston Hall Bristol. Jewel is the best thing to come out of Alaska since Northern Exposure and she has rescued folk music for young people. Her mainly acoustic first album Pieces Of You was released when she was only 19 years old and it demonstrated an almost creepy talent. She is currently promoting her new album Spirit, a strong pop record with full band arrangements produced by Madonna collaborator Patrick Leonard. It still has all the usual Jewel trademarks (her vocal gymnastics and delicate guitar playing) and one track features the distinctive and nimble bass playing of Flea from the ‘chilli Peppers. On both albums her lyrixcs and subject matter have an uncompromising naivity which is engaging but not always comfortable (lines like ‘ I’m sensitive and I’d like to stay that way’ are enough to make most male listeners feel a little bit ashamed) She is a feminine feminist whose compassion is not just reserved for sisterhood She also sympathises with fat people, gay people and drug addicts. Her first album won an elite worldwide following and it remains to be seen if Spirit will elevate her to the status she deserves. Her name and spiritual aspirations suggest she may be stuck in an overly optimistic hippy time-warp But her music is more enjoyable, passionate and sincere than the bland songs which made Alanis Morrisette super famous for a short time. Ok that’s it…. Plus a queue of film-makers & photographers desperate to capture her good looks. Jewels star quality blazes among the brightest celebrity firmament. All of which is some acheivement for a girl brought up on the edge of the Artic tundra in a log cabin with no running water. ' A lot of my childhood was simply about getting by in a semi-rural community on a day to day level ' Jewel recalls ' For a long time we didnt even have electricity. It was a struggle; we had to work hard to survive. I still feel like im getting up everyday to do my job, only now it's singing & songwriting ' Born to swiss-american entertainer parents in Homer, 200 miles west of Anchorage & just a days drive from the Artic Ocean, Jewel had a peripatetic childhood. ' From age 8-16, I lived in 14 different houses; from 16-20 I lived in 14 other houses, & from 20 to now i've been touring all over the world, so I havent had the good old fashioned American Homestead for the majority of my life. ' After her parents divorced, such defiance of domestic normality even led to a stint living in an estate car parked in a vacant Californian lot-a penny pinching subsistence which helped fund the teenagers seemingly remorseless quest for salvation through a career in music. Typically, just to spike any illusions of a romantic loner existence, Jewel is quick to point out that bivouacked in the car next door was her ever supportive mother, Nedra. Nedra is more like a sister to Jewel & her own life story is straight out of a Tammy Wynette song. having endured an alcoholic husband, a protracted divorce, poverty afflicted single motherhood & the demise of her own singing career, she is one of life's survivors. And its those implacable genes that her daughter has so obviously inherited. ' The thing that Nedra does ' Jewel explains ' is to make sure that everythings progressing in the right direction without over doing the tour or promotion side. She looks out for me in a way very few ever really do. ' The eccentric folklore surrounding Jewel- tales of her silencing menacing hecklers with a display of Alpine yodelling & going nowhere without a good luck Tupperware box of Alaskan soil-sits oddly with the profesional young woman currently circumnavigating the globe in support of her second album Spirit. Her upcoming British dates will not be Jewels first visit to these shores; ' I toured Europe after my first album as a solo act-mostly playing small venues-so im looking forward to coming back with my band. Theres something open minded about audiences in Britain. I mean in the States they just don't undestand someone who comes from a working rural Alaskan background-they assume im the product of a weird hippie upbringing. They're a little less prejudiced in the UK. ' Its funny all this stuff that gets said about me ' she says ' I was pn stage one night & took a sip of the guitarists beer & this girl shreiks,' I thought you didnt drink!'-which is just not true. I don't know where it all comes from. ' But Jewels rise to prominance has been based on just such a word of mouth. Her 1994 debut albim Pieces Of You- an old fashioned accoustic guitar underpinning lyrics apparently torn from any literate teenagers diary-eventually racked up 8 million sales in the States alone-without any hype. As if all this werent enough, Jewel recently published a slim volume of her own poetry, A Night Without Armour, which spent 3 months on the New York Times best seller list (its due out in the UK later this year). A second collection of 'journal entries, poems, essays & stories' is on the way, according to publishers, Harper Collins. And then theres the acting. A former drama student at Michigans Interlochen Arts Accademy, Jewel recently completed a major part in Ang (eat drink, man, woman)Lees forthcoming civil war drama, Ride with the Devil, where she plays a feisty confederate farm widow, courted by Skeet Ulkrich & Tobey Maguire. ' I love acting ' Jewel grins ' I like not having to make every creative decision. It makes a nice change to let a director order me about. ' Shes been linked with more than one actor as well. ' Before I was completley self reliant, but the more well known i've become, the more men seem to be interested in me.' (funny that) Such thoughts are a world away form her impoverished Alaskan youth-not that shes forgotten her chilly homeland; ' Alaskas a funny place, the rest of the states don't get it. I've been on the road for five years;thats my world now, but I miss the wide open spaces.' She proabably dosent miss the lack of warmth & water;these days Jewel has all the plumbing & heating shewants in the house in sunny San Diego to which she bolts when she wants to escape the limelight. In the meantime, her simple confessional songwriting continues to gather accolades & awards from every corner. ' My life has been about over coming obstacles to some extent, ' she says ' Of course, the biggest challenge comes when there are no challenges left. What then? AMBITION IS A GIRL'S BEST FRIEND JEWEL London Royal Albert Hall, Wednesday May 5 1999. "The more I live, the more I know", breathes Jewel from the plush folds of one of her bespoke range of voices, namely the lip-swollen, bedroom-eyelidded, boy-flattening Susannah Hoffs one; "What's simple is true." And while we're on the topic of eternal verities, what's blatantly obvious can be pretty damned effective, too. Just ask one of the rather stricken-looking thirtysomething blokes in the Albert Hall, as soon as any of them look capable of speech again, which will be sometime around next Wednesday. Because, of course, the one thing Jewel Kilcher isn't is another wistful, fair-haired Lilith with an acoustic guitar. And if no-one's actually tried the Mariah Carey more-is-more scenery-chewing and neckline-plunging approach to the folk-girl schtick until now, well, no-one's sold a squillion Yankee records in this field in quite some time either. Her hands might be famously small, as she helpfully points out with a touch of ear-shredding vibrato in the obligingly titled 'Hands', but from thirty rows back where the sharp and hungry alertness on her face disappears in a haze of blonde hair, Jewel's grip looks utterly relentless. And two hours' worth of particularly bad and breathless poetry later, all you can really do is applaud the determination. Not to mention the rather novel interpretation of sisterhood that comes with it: for a woman who gives the distinct impression of not liking women very much, Kilcher bestows everything - from the plungingly epic 'Deep Water' to the coffeehouse whimsy of 'Cold Song' - with a flawlessly steely rota of, oh, take your pick: Rickie Lee Jones, Sheryl Crow, Emmylou Harris, Tori Amos, Alannah Myles, Odetta, 'Live To Tell'-era Madonna, Lucinda Williams and Michelle Shocked. Like she hasn't so much studied their catalogues as launched a corporate raid on their vocal chords. And won, (small) hands down. The hilariously heavy-breathing 'Morning Song' is perhaps a quintessentially Jewel-like moment, all finger-suckingly poutful "let's go back to bed" invitations and toe-curling "you be Henry Miller and I'll be Anais Nin" proclamations that suggest her, erm, literary sources. By the time we get there this, too, becomes simple, true, and blindingly obvious: what sane woman wouldn't want to be Jewel Kilcher on demand? Master fifteen minutes' worth of this kind of seduction, and folk music, beatitudes, or nebulous notions of sisterhood will look as irrelevant as rhinestones in a window full of Tiffany ice. Behind me, there's a row of whooping fifteen-year-old American girls with no interest whatsoever in Joni Mitchell, staring hard and taking copious mental notes. Some came privately & some came from list posts & all seemed of interest to many of you. I think I cover most current questions that are not already answered specificly on Jewel's website. Q-When is Jewel's home video project coming out? A- This is currently in production but will be coming out sometime this summer. The results so far even fascinated me & I've seen my share of Jewel. There's plenty of great live footage including performances both vintage & new. Also, quite a bit of "behind the scenes" footage on the bus (or the van in 1995-96), backstage & at home. Q- Is Jewel doing a VH1 Storytellers? If so, when? A-YES, this is currently being figured out. No taping has been scheduled yet, though. When details are available, I'll definitely make sure the EDAs are the first to know. Q- Is Jewel's movie "Ride With The Devil" playing at Cannes Film Festival this month? A-Not that we know of. Q-What do you think of the EODA list, MrBB? A-Can't say I know what its really all about because there's too many lists for me already! Some described it to me as rude & insulting. Someone else forwarded me a few posts awhile ago that were kinda funny in a mean way. That can be entertaining sometimes. (See Mr. Mike O'Donoghue on vintage Saturday Night Live episodes for the king of "mean humour"! Or rent his notorious "Mr Mike's Mondo Video" for shock & laughs simultaneously!) I guess its totally unmoderated. I don't think I'd personally enjoy that as a steady diet, but if the EODA list brings people pleasure, then I'm all for it, especially if its funny. Since all mailing list subscribing is voluntary & if its fun for it's subscribers, then its cool by me. Q- In North America, are The Coors opening for Jewel now, instead of Steve Poltz? A- No. But here's whats happening. They're currently determining who would be cool additional support acts for Jewel's upcoming (mostly outdoor) summer tour of North America. It's possible that The Coors are being considered for Irvine as someone posted, but I've heard no confirmation of that. I have heard, however, that Rusted Root are possibilities as support. Regardless of who joins the tour, Steve Poltz will still be doing his set, as well. The summer shows will be a nice long experience. I'll let you know "who else will be where" when I know. Q-Where can I get the lyrics to unreleased Jewel songs? A-There are MANY fan sites that contain lyric archives for Jewel, I forget specific URL's but I'm sure those of you with sites that have em, will post in response to this. (Please?) That's the places to find older lyrics. Jewel's site will soon help you with "newer song" lyrics. For those of you interested in some of the new songs surfacing on the tour, we're going to start putting up new song lyrics as part of the "Lyrics Page" soon. I still have a lot of transcribing to do first... But in the meantime, I'm going to put up NEW ACCURATE lyrics to the non-album songs Jewel is currently playing on the tour. I started with "Grey Matter", "Down", & "Love Me Just Leave Me Alone". On the latter two, these are probably the first accurate lyrics ever posted. Both of those songs were "works in progress" for several years, but have now settled into final versions lyricly. Since I have no desire to compete with all the great lyric archives already out there on fan sites, I'm not going to bother with the hundreds of older songs. I'll stick to new songs & songs currently performed that are not on the albums. That should keep me plenty busy. Anyway, those 1st three accurate transcriptions will be up soon with more to come. I'll stop mentioning it after today, but I have been updating Jewel's website calendar every day for almost a week now & will continue to do so rather than answer EDA mail regarding calendar questions. Please check the website calendar BEFORE sending any calendar related questions (www.jeweljk.com) & check locally for all ticket information. I guess thats about it for today. Keep those UK reports coming in! :-) MrBB From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Tue May 11 01:49:17 1999 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id BAA04017 for jewel-news-outgoing; Tue, 11 May 1999 01:48:48 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <199905110548.BAA04017@smoe.org> To: Jewel-News@smoe.org From: ABershaw@aol.com Date: 10 May 99 21:50:40 -0800 Subject: Jewel-News: MrBB-Tour Cities Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hi all, I've corrected almost a dozen of the tour cities on Jewel's website calendar. Jewel was in high spirits last night she was very happy, giggly and shatted a lot with steve, the highlight of the show had to be her intro tyou were meant for me lasted more or less 20 minutes and she told us a big long story about her and steve in mexico going on a drugs bust they got causght up in with mexican police and how steve was give pot by the police…. Also she kept making jokes about the film 12 monkeys which she’d been watching on the tour bus… or as Jewel called it, 15 minus 3 monkeys or 3 times 5 minus 3 monkeys. I have my theories on her good mood, as did other people who were with me. But I couldn’t possibly cast dispersions on our Jewel :) Another nice moment was when someone requested I’m sensitive she asked if anyone had the pieces of you cd so she could read the words, she made comments about how dumb she looked on the front of the cd cover :) then she played the song with the word resting on the body of the guitar, leaning backwards and looking under her arm to read the words… The country song she sang was she said to be from her fathers perspective so it was sort of about him, Whether that halps anyone know what the title of it is. They played a particularly good rendition of down so long , and who will save your sould went on for absolutely ages …not that I’m complaining, while Jewel had fun trying to catch out doug pettibone (was that his name, mym inds blanked now I’m writing this) when he was matching her singing on the guitar. The new song do you want to play, was really good. I definitely like this rockier version of Jewel :) That’s about it really, My only disappointment was Jewel only played one song in the encore, I was hoping maybe she’d do angel standing by or chime bells. But again, I’m not going to complain cause it was still an excellent concert. The audience really got into it too, Steves set was wonderful as before, dare I say another very happy singer on stage that night :) Ta-ra then Ria From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Sun May 16 00:14:49 1999 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id AAA25001 for jewel-news-outgoing; Sun, 16 May 1999 00:14:32 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <199905160414.AAA25001@smoe.org> To: Jewel-News@smoe.org From: keschlesinger@hotmail.com Date: 12 May 99 14:50:16 -0800 Subject: Jewel-News: Jewel in Glamour Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hi Angels, In the June issue of Glamour magazine, Jewel is mentioned twice. On page 64 there are pictures of actors who are singing, and singers who are acting. There is a small picture of Jewel from RWTD. It says that it is coming out in October. Also, on page 172, they talk about this summer's "female-friendly" concerts. They put all the assumed info into stupid little categories. They also seem to think that all guys who like Jewel just like her because she's attractive. For Jewel it says: Type of music~ Feel-good,chicken-soup-for-the-soul folk, plus some yodeling. Scene at a Glance~ Cheering young girls, all but oblivious to the hordes of guys who drool for Jewel. Who To Bring~ Your old college roommate, the one who knows all your secrets and still hasn't spilled them. What to Wear~ Your ice blue T-shirt, cargo skirt and mukluks. Groupies~ Guys who claim they bought Jewel's poetry book but really just like to ogle her while she sings. Other female concerts talked about are Lilith Fair, Faith Hill, Meshell Ndegeocello, Ani DiFranco, Luscious Jackson, and Alanis Morissette. That's it from me for now ;) -Kirsten "the freckled angel" _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web. I know the concert was last sunday but I could'nt post my review before. So here it goes : I came at the Academy at 4 p.m., a bus was just arriving and there was about 10 people looking for Jewel but she wasn't there : I saw all the musicians getting off the tour bus, but at that time I didn't know their names, I saw Steve and I hardly recognized him (he is so different from the video of YWMFM), I took a picture of him, and he had forgot his guitar so he get back in the bus and when he came back, I asked him to sign my CD, I couldn't find One Left Shoe in England the days before so he signed my POY booklet. he was so nice and so cut. then I talked with this guy, I don't know his name but he told me that he was a friend of Jewel travelling with her, he told me that he didn't know where she was, she wanted to go for a walk. later on, I was reading ANWA and I heard the soundcheck, Jewel was in there but I didn't know where she entered, she sang Little Sister, Memoirs of a Housewife and a really great song I never heard, she performed that song during the concert (just before Down) and she said she wrote that song a long time ago. at 7 p.m., the door opened and I was in the front row. Steve was so great and funny, here is the setlist (not sure about it) : Ten Chances Beautiful Day Joining the circus Broken Hearts and Painted Nails (w/ Doug) Silver Lining (w/ Doug &Steve) ABC Song The Star Wars Song during the break, a lot of people were buying his CD, meaning they really enjoyed him :-))))) then Jewel appeared, in the dark, singing Near You Always. I don't put the setlist 'cos Mike already did and he remembered better than I did. she seemed very close to Steve when they sang YWMFM, she began punching him and he punched her back and she laughed while singing. she sang a new song she wrote the night before. I really liked her version of Life Uncommon, and the audience was really great for this song. just before the great song I don't know the name, she asked the crowd to stand up. she was really rockish that night, with songs like DSL and Love me just leave me alone. she did an amazing WWSYS (you know with Doug at the end) at the end, Steve and Doug threw their plectrums and those of Jewel in the crowd and I got one, and I think it's the Jewel's one because it is a yellow one and I got a picture when Jewel hold a yellow plectrum. it's so cool, I bought my guitar 2 weeks ago and now I play with Jewel's plectrum (or Steve's or Doug's). after the gig, it was raining a lot so I didn't wait for Jewel and the band but I think it was Jewel who I saw running into a car. it was the first time I saw Jewel live and it was totally different. I bought Steve's CD and the tour book which is really nice. Take Care Angels. Here is the article: This barely retouched debut contains the songs responsible for the mighty Jewel dynasty. "Who Will Save Your Soul" is a coffeehouse sing-along on which her voice gorgeously liquefies and scats at the drop of a hat; "You Were Meant for Me," the melodic marvel she wrote with Steve Poltz, lets loose her spiritualized romanticism in the pop-culture mainstream -- alongside movies and toothpaste. But Jewel's extraordinary "Foolish Games" clinches it: the heart, the soul, the all-American Edith Piaf strivings, the irresistible feeling of a pop hit as literary lingerie. First of all--WELCOME! Since the list FAQ is almost 4 years old & extremely out of date , it's understandibly difficult for new subscribers to get a grip on all that goes on in this large community. These lists, as you can probably sense, have facilitated the developement of many personal relationships among listmembers. The EDAs have also gone beyond the boundaries of the NET & have participated in quite a few great outside projects geared toward helping others as well as meeting in larger groups at music & non-music related events around the world. The purpose of this email is to give new folks a hand at finding the best resources to help with understanding this group called The EDAs. That "Spirit" song is definitely NOT the song she wrote for the movie. She wrote "What's Simple Is True" long before the movie. It was written during her 2nd 1997 European tour & you tape collectors will remember that she began performing it during that tour. (It was known as "Winter Song" or "Song For The Winter" back then...remember? ;-) During the time she spent on location for the movie in 1998, she wrote another song specifically from the perspective of her charachter in the movie. This song is tentatively called "The Sue Lee Song" & she's only performed it once. That was at her final concert of the recent Japan dates at Geiso Center in Nagoya. It's a really beautiful song, with haunting lyrics & is, in my opinion, the best new acoustic song unvieled so far on the tour. I don't think any EDAs posted about this show, so I don't think it was ever mentioned before. And speaking of selists, those of you interested in that kind of stuff, will be very happy to discover that I've massively updated the "1999 Setlists" page on Jewel's website. Now, in addition to every Australia show, I have added every setlist from the swings through New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, Ireland, Scotland & the first 4 England dates. Every 1999 Tour concert is now listed up through the Manchester gig last week. Every setlist is complete & 100% accurate & again, I've also included every Steve Poltz setlist as well. So for those of you interested in these things, please take a look & enjoy! (Note: On www.jeweljk.com, go to the calendar & you'll find the setlist link at the bottom of the calendar window) Also as promised, on the lyrics page, you'll now find the accurate lyric transcriptions to the 3 "Spirit Tour" songs I mentioned last week. There will be more, but now we have up "Grey Matter", "Down" & "Love Me Just Leave Me Alone". On the latter two, these are the first accurate lyric transcriptions ever posted. I'd also like to thank all those who are getting in the habit of checking Jewel's website calendar instead of writing me with scheduling questions. I'm making a very conscious effort to update it every single day & it seems to be making a big difference in my email deluge. I was getting over 75 emails a day with scheduling questions & now its down to under 10 a day. I consider that a dramatic improvement! So, thank you for using this resource. I appreciate it! I hope you enjoy all this new website content! Subject: Jewel-News: !!! Houston EDA gathering update #1 !!! To: "'Jewel list'" ------------------------------------------------------------------------ These updates will appear at most once a week until the week before the show, on July 10. Some EDA's are also planning to go to the Dallas show which is the day before, and the New Orleans show, which is the day after. These updates will only refer to the Houston show though...as far as whose going, the plans for earlier in the day, after the show, etc. As of right now, there aren't any definite plans, however some things have been tossed around, and we are speculating they will occur...once we figure out a time, place, etc. Plans call for an all-day gathering...before the show, and after. Once a placed is established, we plan to have a BBQ/picnic/plywood roping contest/beer guzzling contest (j/k)/whatever else you can think of that's FUN! Some EDA's will be arriving Friday night very late, coming back from the Dallas show. So no time or place has been established yet as for when this gathering will "start", and where it will be. More than likely, something a little more "planned" will take place just before the show...something like a dinner maybe, at one of the restaurants close to the venue. A good time would be 5:00pm-6:00pm. To give everyone plenty of time to eat, and still make it to the show on time to see Steve take the stage at approx. 8:00pm. I'm predicting he'll play about 45 minutes, then there will be a 15 minute break for stage preparation for Jewel, then I think Jewel will play at least 1 1/2 hours...which I think is really cool since the longest I've ever seen her perform before was 1 hour. So it most likely won't be over till at least 10:30, maybe even closer to 11:00pm. After that some of us may get together and go to a club, or just hang out somewhere. But others maybe not be able to, and yet others may want to get an early start on their road trip to New Orleans the following day. So all this is still really up in there air. But we'll think of something soon enough. Right now we're looking at about 15-20 EDA's...unless more get tickets soon. Almost all of the covered reserved seating is sold out...BUT there are still some seats left...good ones! I said ALMOST sold out. And there are plenty of very good non-covered reserved seating still available. So there's plenty of time to get tickets still, and to get rather good seats. No need to be thinking about bringing a blanket for the lawn yet. Tickets are only $36.00, that includes all the taxes too, which to me is cheap based on the prices of other recent shows. Lawn seats are even less of course, if you prefer that. So that's about it for now...here's a list of all the people that have told me, or have told someone else that they're planning on coming to the show in Houston...if you have any questions, e-mail me or Luna Taylor...see her addy below. One of us should be able to give you somewhat of an answer...at least to the best of our knowledge at this time. The show is still almost 2 months away, once it's closer, within a week or two, I'm sure we'll have more plans ironed out as far as the where's, when's, etc. Till then, unless something changes, I'll just be resubmiting this letter to the list once a week, along with the most up-to-date list of EDA's going. If anyone sees any incorrect or missing info in the list, let me know so I can get it corrected. Most of you probably remember the T-shirt project that was started a while back (about 3 months ago). Well I was the organizational leader of the project and we had figured out everything for the shirt and everything to be done...we just needed to print them up!! Well I am VERY sorry that I didn't start it back then when the discussion took place about making one. I was in school at the time and it was just too tough to concentrate on college and still do this on the side...BUT now school is out!!!!! So I am happy to say I can print the shirts now, I can do this project and can't wait to do it. We might still be able to get these shirts on your backs before the U.S. tour starts. Everyone that remembers this project well and would like a shirt can view and order it at this address: http://picket.cc.purdue.edu/~shortdog/Jewel/EDA.html there you will find a picture of the design and lots of details about ordering....MAKE SURE YOU READ EVERYTHING BEFORE PLACING AN ORDER. If you DO NOT have access to web pages then send me an email and I will send you details and all the information you need to order. If you need to see the picture of the shirt and do not have web access then I would suggest maybe talking to a friend that can view web pages. If you have ANY questions do not hesitate to email me at jewels@purdue.edu because I want there to be as little confusion as possible. THE DEADLINE TO GET YOUR ORDER TO ME IS JUNE 15TH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This deadline CAN NOT be changed due to order restrictions and time frames so that people can get shirts by the beginning of July. I hope I can still do this for everyone because it is something I have wanted to do for a long time. That's the Pinkpop festival in Landgraaf (The Netherlands). This year it was the thirtieth anniversary with some big names on stage :-) Names like Jewel, Heather Nova, Alanis Morissette, Manic Street Preachers, Robbie Williams, Skunk Anansie, Faithless and some more .... The most important was (ofcourse) Jewel .... The performance was VERY cool!! Her "show" would start at 4pm. We (Jesse, his sister, a sister's friend and I) entered the tent at 3.25pm and there already were LOTS of people in there, so it was pretty difficult to get a nice place to enjoy Jewel ... But when Jewel entered the stage, we had a pretty good place ... I don't know the exact order of the songs (maybe one of my fellow Dutch Jewelfans can help me out), but in any case she played, Hands (the first song), Down So Long, Down (VERY nice!), Jupiter (the new rocky version), Foolish Games (which was almost entirely sung by both Jewel AND the crowd :-)), Love me Just Leave Me Alone, What's Simple Is True, You Were Meant For Me and WWSYS (indeed, the long version, like she played them during the UK and Germany concerts). The last song of the performance was Chime Bells ... (that surprised some people who were near me in the public). And what was pretty amazing, was that jewel did one song with her brother ... (can't remember the name of the song now ...). The beginning of the performance (Hands) was not that well ... I think that was because of the lack of a good soundcheck .... Steve Poltz's guitar didn't work and there were some other (small) problems. But overall, her performance was VERY cool, including some fantastic light effects)! The crowd was very enthusiastic and the tent was too small to let all people watch Jewel ... Well, in total the performance took about one hour ... Will this be the break-through for Jewel here in Holland .... ???? In a cd store on the festival ground we found the exclusive tour edition of SPIRIT ... A bonus cd is included with five songs from the acoustic performance in Madrid (Spain) earlier this year. Track listing is: Down S Lng, What's Smple I Tue, Foolish Games, Do You, Who Will Save Your Sou. I dunno whether this special edition will be released somewhere else here in Europe or even the rest of the world ... Maybe you can contact your local Jewel record company to get some information on that. We hoped Jewel wanted to do a sign session after her performance (like other artists did), but she didn't want to :-(( So we didn't have a chance to congratulate her on her birthday .... We (Michiel, who I found again ..., and I) walked around the tent and saw Doug Pettibone walking ... We talked with him for a minute about the concert, but he was looking for Steve George ... A few minutes later we saw Jewel walking backstage ... But that was the last time we saw her ... I think they left to the hotel or so ... As you know, tomorrow she will perform in Paris (France). It was no problem taking pictures during the show. I hope I made some nice one's (I took 32 pictures of her .... hehehe) ... If so, I'll put many of them on my site ... So check that out regurlarly ... A final request .... You can vote for Jewel in the Best of Pinkpop chart ... I'm sure she deserves to be the number one, so all of you have to go to (copy and paste if it's not viewed correctly) and vote three times a day ... She is already on #1 for a long time .... She has to stay on the first position till the end of this chart .... *lol* Thanx for reading and talk to you soon :-)) Roel, The Other Everyday Angel. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ICQ# 16784628 "Lost is a puzzle of stars that breathes like water and chews like stone" ~~ Jewel, The Everyday Angel http://www.r-cobben.demon.nl http://EveryDayAngels.net/RoelJewel From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Wed May 26 17:03:52 1999 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id RAA07025 for jewel-news-outgoing; Wed, 26 May 1999 17:03:38 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <199905262103.RAA07025@smoe.org> From: "Lucy Bennett" To: Subject: Jewel-News: 'Exclusive' programme in the UK to feature Jewel Date: Tue, 25 May 1999 06:29:10 -0000 Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hey EDA's, To all you Jewel fans in the UK, Jewel will be featured on the Channel 5 show 'Exclusive' on Sunday 30 May at 2.20pm. Subject: Jewel-News: Houston EDA Gathering Update! (5/26/99) To: "'Jewel list'" Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk These updates will appear at most once a week until the week before the show, on July 10. Once a placed is established, we plan to have a BBQ/picnic/plywood roping contest/beer guzzling contest (j/k) whatever else you can think of that's FUN! 99% of the covered reserved seating is sold out. However, there is plenty of very good non-covered reserved seating still available. So that's about it for now...here's a list of all the people that have told me they're planning on coming to the show in Houston...if you have any questions, e-mail me or Luna Taylor...see her addy below. One of us should be able to give you somewhat of an answer...at least to the best of our knowledge at this time. The show is still about 1 1/2 months away, so once it's closer, (within a week or two) I'm sure we'll have more plans ironed out as far as the where's, when's, etc. Till then, I'll just be resubmiting this letter to the list once a week (with maybe a few minor changes), along with the most up-to-date list of EDA's going. If anyone sees any incorrect or missing info in the list, let me know so I can get it corrected asap. Thanks, Derrick One more thing...be sure to get your orders in for the new EDA t-shirt so we can all wear them to the show! :-) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- *** Houston JEWEL concert EDA list *** ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Becca - funk.girl@chickmail.com - Houston, TX Robert Byrne - rob_in_vero@angelfire.com - Vero Beach, FL Sean Charlston - playaboy1@juno.com - LaMarque, TX Tien Dang - tdang2@bayou.uh.edu - Houston, TX Heather Dover - Jewelh383@aol.com - Houston, TX Kay Frye - kkfrye@aol.com - Houston, TX Tessa "Harris" - asset.moo@mail.utexas.edu - Austin, TX Dennis Harris - Harrisbros@aol.com - Taunton, MA (native Austinite!) I update the website calendar every single day at least once, sometimes several times a day. I have added NEW information almost every day, as well. It's usually new TV information & media appearances, since the tour dates rarely change. If you see no changes to the calendar, its likely because you need to refresh your browser or empty your browser cache, which may be preventing you from loading the most recent page. We've also added a Ticketmaster hyper-link at the top of the calendar for your online ticket ordering convenience. Not all dates are available yet, but many are on sale already. Please use this resource or call your local venue box office for all ticket information. The email "tour dates" auto-responder should also be up & running very soon. This will help those of you who are limited to email only & cannot access the site. It'll auto-respond the current confirmed tour dates list when you send an email there. I'll let you know the address as soon as its ready. Several important announcements will be forthcoming over the course of the next week or so. Consider this a "heads up" to watch for them. This was a private concert on February 11th earlier this year. The five live tracks are: Down So Long What's Simple Is True Foolish Games Do You Who Will Save Your Soul This special edition is only available in European markets. Everywhere else, its an import. Also very good news for the UK EDAs. On Monday, the 21st of June, BBC Radio 2 will broadcast the recording they made at the recent May 6th Cambridge England show. The BBC professionally recorded this with their mobile unit & the recording is quite nice. Not sure of transmission time, but I'm sure you UK folks can help each other find out. VH1 will determine that after evaluating the responses. What I'm going to do is this: I'm going to put the names of all EDAs who reply between now & Monday evening on a list with their information. The names of these people will be forwarded to VH1 on Tuesday. They (VH1) will personally contact the 75 EDAs (NOT ME!!) & they will select the 75 invitees. They will instruct you personally on anything else you'll need to know when they contact you. And if they choose you, they will of course inform you what time & where to be in NYC on June 9th for the taping. I realize its a holiday weekend & not the best time to do this, but time is limited. I'm simply doing the best I can with the parameters given. Understand that & refrain from complaining about it (to me, at least ;-) To be one of the 75 EDAs to join us, you must first determine 2 things now & then proceed with the instructions. They are simple yes/no answers ONLY. (Do not elaborate with any extenuating circumstances): 1.) Can I DEFINITELY be in New York City on June 9th? 2.) Can I be available for contact next week (June 1st->4th)? Send your 2 answers along with the following information. VH1 needs ALL THIS INFORMATION if you want to be considered!!! 1)your full name 2) age & sex 3) phone number (with area code!) 4) best email address to contact you 5) full postal mailing address (they will likely FEDEX you the tickets!) 6) will you need a parent, guardian or friend to accompany you to NYC? If so, their name. **********And very important!************* 7) Three questions you would ask Jewel if given the opportunity Send this information to me ASAP at the following address ONLY! MrBBReply@aol.com I am the only one who will have your info & I will not share it for any purpose outside this project. If you forget to include any of the information or you reply to any of my other addresses, you will not be considered for participation, so reply only if you follow ALL the instructions above. Last time we did this in NYC, many people forgot to include all the requested information in their excitement & were deleted unfortunately. So please, do not forget to include all the requested information!! This particular "Storytellers" is going to be unique because not only will Jewel perform & tell stories to the intimate studio audience, but VH1 will select 20 of you to participate in a cozy sit-down chat with Jewel. This will also be part of the program. Thus the reason for your 3 questions. If you'd enjoy attending the "Storytellers" filming in NYC & can follow the instructions, we'd love to have you there! Over the next few days, please realize this is far more insane for me than you, so please don't send me questions & just read & follow the instructions carefully now. Once you have replied, please do not write in again & do not write me to check status. The 75 people will be contacted by VH1 personally to confirm that they can attend. I will not be able to give you personal status reports, so please don't ask. OK. Send the required info to MrBBreply@aol.com now. I hope many who want to participate can & all the rest of you will watch Jewel & your fellow EDAs on VH1. I look forward to seeing you there! First off, I have decided to hold a contest to name this year's event. The winner will receive a set of 3 Steve Poltz cd's recently traded on the poltz list!!! There should be only one entry per person, so make it a good one. All entries must be sent to EdaMommy@aol.com - Good luck to everyone :-) Judges decisions are final (it's a panel). Now, if you have no idea what I'm talking about and are asking yourself as you read this what in the h*** is Bearsville '99 - then please go to http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup/bv/bv99.htm and check out the page Mike Connell put together for us :-) (the pages for the past two years are also still available for viewing - just change the 99 to 98 or 97 :-) OK, so you're dying to attend - or you have questions and want more info, the next step is to write to me at BRSVL99@aol.com and let me know - The list of attendees will also be available for viewing at the Bearsville '99 web page :-) Hope to hear from you soon!!!! Here we go! As you know, Jewel has plans to film a VH1 "Storytellers". We're inviting 75 of you to participate as the audience for this program, which will take place at an undisclosed (for now) location in NYC a little over a week from now on Wednesday, June 9th. ONLY 75 EDAs can participate in this. Those 75 "invitees" will be put on the guest list, will receive FREE tickets & will require identification to get in. The tickets will cost you nothing. :-) For this particular event, you will need to be available by phone and/or email all next week to be contacted by the VH1 production staff. Stressful at times sure but fun non the less. I have been recieving tons of "thank yous'" in both email and with just about every check that i recieve in the mail. It really is me that should be thanking all of you for this opportunity and sticking with me through it all. And well most of all, trusting me to do it. That tells me alot about the Angels out there...it tells me that you all can trust someone you don't really know. You can put faith in someone that you have no reason to put faith into. To me that is what life is about. It isn't that you are even taking a risk at all when it comes to sending me the money, it is just about the trust. I have a few people to thank for this, even though the whole project isn't over with yet, I am sure I will thank more when it is over and done with and I sure would like to do it again some time. So here is the special thanks. Scott Evans: This person comes to mind first because I had lost faith in the fact that I would get to do the project and I thought that everyone had forgotten about it but then Scott started the 1999 Jewel Web Awards and my Site was nominated for 3 of the 5 categories. This told me that you all pretty much really like my site. It gave me the motivation to really want to see the project get started. I hope I win at least one of the categories :-) Mike Connell: Well of course Mike has to be included... I couldn't have started it without his advice, or consent for that matter. He checks all of our posts ya know and he wouldn't let me post till i was considered a trust-worthy guy. We have talked on the phone quite a bit and we have learned alot about each other. So Mike, thanks for all the advice and guidance so far. Jennie Anderson: Jennie and I go to Purdue University together and we havent even met yet but she gave a good recommendation about me to Mike so that I could start the project. Jennie and i will meet each other eventually and maybe we will get to know each other pretty well but for now we talk through email often and I just want to thank her for the support (even though she doesn't want to buy a t-shirt, hehehe) All the EDAs that joined the project list: Back in Feburary when the t-shirt project started and everyone took me on as the "leader" of the project right from the start. I know i kinda just grabbed the postion but that is the kind of person I am..if I see much isn't getting done then I jump right in and make it my business to help out in everyway I can. i am just happy everyone welcomed me to the group rather than getting pissed that I wanted to see things get done. I know I have so many more to thank for the support in the project but it is about midnight at my house right now and well I am just plain tired :-) so just a few more things: Dont forget that June 15th is the last day I am excepting orders for the EDA T-shirt '99 and I need at least 80% of the checks by that day as well. On the 16th I am going to the company where the shirts are being made and i am paying for a large order of 70 shirts or more which obviously means I have to have all the money deposited and cleared before I go to the company. So everyone get in those orders and get the money off to me as quickly as possible. The MrBBreply@aol.com account has been terminated & no more entries can be accepted. I took the time & effort to write back to all who didn't follow the instructions, but unfortunately, a few dozen entries were deleted that didn't resubmit their entry correctly. The only exception I made was for people who submitted more than 3 questions, in which case only the first 3 questions were submitted as per the instructions. Approximately 250 entries followed the instructions in time & all were added to the "potential" list. Almost half were from EDAs not even remotely near NYC & I question whether many really can even get there. Many seem to be in a dream sequence where this is an "all expense paid trip offer". It's not. That's why I specifically had everyone first answer the major question asking "Can you definitely be in NYC on June 9th?". Regardless of that, those people were still added to the list. I estimate approximately 150 of the entries are really capable of getting themselves to NYC, so that makes the odds about 50/50 for all other entries. Pretty good odds! :-) I'm not sure how VH1 will handle that "I want a guest" aspect. That's totally up to them. I tend to think no guests will be allowed which will accommodate more EDAs rather than less. VH1 staff will likely begin calling people tomorrow & they will personally inform the "75 EDA invitees" on procedure. Please understand that its out of my hands completely now & I will not be able to give anyone status reports. It's totally up to VH1 staff which 75 EDAs will be contacted and/or invited. That's the entire summary of this project as it now stands. I wish everyone who followed the instructions good luck & I look forward to meeting many new EDA faces there. I hope your weekend was much more relaxing than mine! ;-) MrBB
