(Jewel List) Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Great news! The EveryDay Angels Foundation (EDAF) is officially accepting applications for membership. As subscribers to the Jewel mailing list and possibly someone interested in the concept of being an everyday angel, we'd like to extend membership to you. First, a little history on the EDAF: In 1996, members of the Jewel list were encouraged by Jewel to direct their energies toward helping others. Many responded with charitable acts, including helping a young man severely injured in a San Diego automobile accident. Friendships were made, and the power of positive thought and action were proven in a real world situation. In order to keep this aspect of the list moving forward, many of us laid the framework for building a legal entity to facilitate more acts of everyday kindness -- The EveryDay Angels Foundation. The EDAF was registered in California as a legal non-profit 501 (c) 3 public benefit corporation. The group was officially "born" in Los Angeles (the "City of Angels") on November 24, 1997. That same week, the legendary Java Joe's "Pajama Jam" was held in the group's honor. Many EDA-related San Diego artists participated, including an unannounced visit by Jewel herself. (The event is available as the AngelFood tape "Future Folklore Volume 3"). Since then, we have established our business practices, obtained tax exemption from the IRS and forged partnerships with several well known volunteer organizations, such as the Second Harvest Food Bank Network and the Center for Marine Conservation. Our initial "pilot" projects have included volunteering at food bank warehouses, beach cleanups and erosion-prevention projects, collection of clothing for the indigent and encouraging blood and tissue donation. Future direction for the EDAF will depend heavily on the interests and actions of our members. New possibilities include working with youth groups, assisting in the recording of books for the sight impaired and literacy programs. The EDAF is now comprised of four critical elements -- our members, friends of the Foundation, sponsors and partners. Partners provide us direction and goals to achieve, while sponsors enable us to bring it all together. Most important are our members and friends. Members build the organization, and friends lend a hand to our efforts. While we hope everyone joins as a member, active friends are also highly valued. The whole point of the EDAF is to make folks aware and get them active in their own communities. Whether we have 2 members and 98 friends accomplishing something, or 98 members and 2 friends accomplishing something, it STILL GETS DONE. You don't have to "buy" into any individual programs we promote, just the concept and activity of truly BEING an "everyday angel". So, how is this going to work? Well, if you are interested in joining, you need to fill out a simple one page membership application and return it to us. The form is available in portable document format (PDF is readable by the freely distributed Adobe Acrobat Reader) via our web site ( www.edaf.org/membrshp.pdf ) or by direct email (contact EDAFinfo@aol.com with requests). If you prefer, we will happily "snail mail" you a paper copy application. You'll need to return the completed form by mail regardless. We will collect membership fees to offset some of the costs we will be incurring. These costs include publishing a print newsletter beginning this summer, which will be mailed to members automatically. You'll also receive a membership card and some future promotional items. To simplify accounting, and avoid annual dues notices, the initial membership fee is set at a nominal $15, with a special $10 rate for students and senior citizens (60+). We anticipate this being a lifetime membership fee, with future member expenses being covered by grants and other funding sources. Please understand that no one is required to join as a member to participate with Foundation activities! However, increased membership will help build the organization quicker. The membership fee is also tax-deductible (in the United States) as a charitable donation. A moderated EDAF mailing list is also available, with relevant non-member email submissions encouraged. The digest will be sent to members of the Foundation, and used for discussing the types of things the members want to see done as future projects. As activities and interest picks up, we will explore utilizing a weekly AOL chat room, too. We look to expand our programs and areas of involvement this summer. This expansion will be largely driven by what interests membership. The EDAF is soliciting the support of several sponsors and partners, and we hope to be able to make announcements soon. We look forward to our membership growing and doing great things for our communites and for the world, but it won't be complete until YOU get involved! Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk *** Sheila (the angel with a cold on medication on spring break whose finally clumsily strumming a guitar) asked about EDA picks: >Hi everyone, yet again! I just got a guitar :) So I was wondering where I >could find any EDA/Jewel guitar picks? If you have any links or info, please >email me. Well, there have been EDA guitar picks available on the list before, and there are again! :-) In 1997, list members printed a supply of special EDA picks, and gave Jewel several hundred as a birthday present. The remainder were offered to the list at a reasonable price, to cover the production costs of the entire run (meaning that the project paid for itself). The project sold out of 700 picks or so in less than 36 hours. A second run was planned, but never happened. Well, around the time Jewel taped her MTV special in New York City last November to debut her CD "Spirit", the EveryDay Angels Foundation designed and produced another EDA pick. Again, several hundred of these picks were given to Jewel, in hopes that she would use them and help promote the EDAF. Many more were distributed to the EDAs who were in the MTV audience that day. The design on these picks includes a web site address on one side that says: www. EveryDay Angels .org The "EveryDay Angels" is VERY bold and stands out, while the "www" and "org" are downplayed. The opposite side has the EDAF logo printed on it. This logo is a variation on the wonderful watercolor birthday card that Amy Neufeld painted for the list when we presented Jewel with news of the star that was named after her. The purpose of these picks is to promote the EDAF by advertising our web site, and to expose folks to the phrase and concept of "EveryDay Angels" as often as possible! As the person who did the production artwork for both picks (my silly "schmoo" angel was on the first ones), I have to admit that I like the new picks MUCH better. A gif graphic showing the designs of both sides is available for viewing at: www.edaf.org/edapicks.gif Technical specs: the picks are yellow .73mm medium guage with black ink imprinted by the folks at D'Addario (again, the same type we used for the first run). However, the ink used on these has a special epoxy mixture, which makes the printing EXTREMELY DURABLE. I have been using one almost daily for two months, and it still looks brand new. This is the pick guage and size Jewel has used in the past, and seems to be a good bet for those who actually play guitar... Anyway, we will occasionally distribute these picks as a promotional item, but if you want to snag a few of them (and support the Foundation while you're at it), we will offer them as an incentive to generous supporters. Here's how it works: Send a business sized self addressed, stamped envelope (SASE) with cash, check, or money order made payable to "EDAF" to: EDAF Picks c/o Dennis Harris PO Box 305 East Taunton, MA 02718 For every $2 donation to the EDAF, we'll send you a free thank-you gift of three (3) EveryDay Angel guitar picks. (The more you donate, the more picks we'll send you!) You'll also receive a receipt for your charitable donation. Please note that any order made with a check will take up to an additional ten days to process. Cash and money order requests will be sent out within 48 hours. We currently have a limited number of picks available, but will certainly supply whatever demand there is! And This One... She's got herself a band and she's beginning to blossom. Jewel The Palais, Melbourne, Australia March 4, 1999 Alone on a scarlet-lit stage the tiny woman in the over-sized Stetson is wiggling her be-denimed posterior in time to the bump-and-grind of her low-slung guitar riffing. On and on she goes, quivering booty aimed resolutely stalls-wards, hammering out primitive ZZ Top chops with the remorseless swagger of the small-town show-off let loose in a local music store. Slowly the hip-swivelling rocker is joined by an ambling retinue of dark-clad figures who mass around the various instruments that litter the stage; and, as she notices their arrival, the petite hat act reluctantly halts her voracious twanging. But there is no respite. For even as her final clanging chord fades away, another cacophonous din commences, the apocalyptic screeching only Formula One racing cars can make. Jewel and her six-piece band kick in to reduce even the over-revving endeavours of Schumacher, Irvine and co to a background buzz. Melbourne, right now, is a very noisy place to be. For 24-year-old multi-million-selling, 20-gallon-hat-wearing troubadour Jewel Kilcher being a big noise is all in a day's work. And while she and her band soundcheck at this Ocean-side Victorian music hall, the eyes, not to mention ears, of the sporting world are concentrated on nearby Albert Park and practice sessions for the Australian Grand Prix. The town is buzzing with anticipation and though local taxi drivers are better informed about Damon Hill and Jacques Villeneuve than about visiting Swiss-American folk pop divas, the city's bookshops are full of Jewel's two-million-selling poetry volume A Night Without Armour and Spirit, while the follow-up to her all-conquering debut Pieces Of You, remains a fixture in the upper echelons of the Australian charts. Soundcheck over, cars garaged, Jewel, shakes her blonde mane free from the headgear, nestles in a front row seat alongside Q to chew the fat about touring ensemble after five years spent emoting to the world with just an acoustic guitar and an ambitious streak as wide as Alaska for company. "This is a breeze compared to the solo years," she confides, flashing that wonky-toothed smile (she prefers not to have it fixed, perhaps fearing crown-in-the-Jewel puns). "It's so much less lonely now. We get along and have a lot of fun together, which makes a change from doing a show, getting straight back in the car and heading off." But surely for someone with time-consuming passions for sculpture, poetry and acting (a part in Ang Lee's forthcoming Ride With The Devil), the mega-tour must seem a mite stifling? "All my heroes - Bob Dylan, Neil Young, the Stones - toured constantly. It's the intimate contact that counts. The strict promotional bit is a drag sometimes, but a necessary evil. Basically I love doing shows. Touring is like being an astronaut though: essentially it's about where you are in your head. It's a unique privilege to be able to get up there and say something to people every night." Three months into the Spirit world tour, tonight's show at the Palais - a crumbling mirage on the palm-strewn St. Kilda beach for which the term "faded grandeur" might have been coined - confirms Jewel's penchant for chat. Interspersed with consummate readings of her oeuvre, the 3,000-strong, mainly female audience are treated to extended monologues essayed with the élan and timing of a seasoned raconteuse. One particularly engaging yarn concerns a jaunt to Mexico with guitarist Steve Poltz that begins as a whale-watching holiday and closes with the duo entangled in a police drug bust. It's hilarious, partly because its urbane, streetwise delivery seems so incongruous coming from a woman notorious for the preciousness of her lyrics, a good deal of which make Alanis Morissette's sound like Lemmy by comparison. And it's those lyrics that most have turned out for tonight. Right from the songstrel's discreet entrance - or as discreet as it's possible for anyone to be wearing leather trousers and a vest - the Melbournites sing along to practically every syllable with a restrained reverence that evolves into football chant accompaniment on the hits. They're also keener to clap along in rhythm than any audience since the demise of The Good Old Days. After the practically a cappella opening, Near You Always, the band slink on and launch into the country-ish Deep Water with Doug Pettibone's spiralling electric guitar freeing a mic-wielding Jewel to prowl the stage-front and throw kittenish shapes that involve catching her navel in the spotlight glare. It's the full rock-chic shtick. Spirited folk-rock workings of the homily-laden What's Simple Is True and melodious paean to self-improvement Hands follow, highlighting Jewel's coruscating vocal arsenal, capable of swinging from helium-like soprano to feisty Patsy Cline baritone in the space of a bar. The emotive force of those vocal chords would melt even the hardest antipodean heart, not that there are many of those tonight. In fact, as many gravelish male voices as votive female ones repeat the "we love you Jewel" mantra that punctuates proceedings. Even the odd old-school wolf whistle gets chucked in, notably after a vamping Jewel purrs the puckish, "I could spend my life travelling the length of your body," line that distinguishes the downright steamy Jupiter. After a short solo interlude, during which she takes and plays requests from the crowd, the singer who's worked them like a circus barker all night, invites the throng to vacate their seats. They dutifully respond by stampeding to the front for a scorching Down So Long - Steven George's florid electric piano to the fore - followed by a new song, Love Me Just Leave Me Alone. It's as immediately familiar as the ersatz Texan boogie number Jewel was banging out at the soundcheck and it unfurls into blistering bluesiness that fans of her stark early work would barely recognise. Likewise the jovial reggaefied makeover of Who Will Save Your Soul? but not the signature jaw-dropping, heckler confounding speed-yodelling that rounds off the set to tumultuous applause. Australia seems to have taken to Jewel. "I really like it here, it's like the best bits of England and the States. People are unaffected. It reminds me of Alaska too, all the wide open spaces." And what of the world tour, is it playing catch-up with a 10-million-selling debut? "My goal is not to sell so many million records every time. When you get too concerned with sales it starts making you write backwards. You can't be cheerleader every year." With a straightforward live show is she trying to shake the mythology of tortured sub-Arctic melancholia that surrounds her? "All that raised by wolves, yodelling at the moon stuff is funny. It's not so bad in Europe but in the States I still get the whole freak thing attached to me. Alaska's an odd place, the rest of the States doesn't really get it: they can't understand someone coming from a working rural background, they assume you have hippy parents. They have no concept of farmers or where their food comes from." Touring so much are her boyfriends destined to be road-widowers? "It's funny, the better known I've become, the more men seem to want to take care of me. Before, I was just so self-sufficient. Who knows, maybe one day I'll want to have kids and slow down, but at the moment I'm enjoying the pace of my life." **** David Sheppard ---------------------------------------------- Chris. Mike :-) *********** >From http://straitstimes.asia1.com.sg/lif/life17_0402.html Marry me, men shouted Alaskan Gem Singer Jewel was that charming, with her touching ballads and intimate chats with the crowd MUSIC JEWEL SPIRIT TOUR '99 WTC Harbour Pavilion Wednesday By REBECCA LIM JEWEL sang about her Hands being small. But she did not have any problems holding her audience captive in her first Singapore concert on Wednesday night. Part of the enthusiasm, one suspects, was sparked off by her radiant looks. When she walked quietly onto the darkened stage at 9.10 pm with the opening number, Near You Always, her hair was clipped back in a fashionably messy bunch. She was togged in a sleeveless, V-necked leather top and stretch, blue slacks, looking clean-cut and alluring. As the night wore on, she unclipped her hair, only to fasten it back again in a more loosely-secured bundle. Her cherubic face glistened with perspiration, and contorted into a series of pained, emotional expressions as she sang. But she always finished with a wide grin for her crowd. For two hours, the singer-songwriter from Alaska kept the crowd of more than 3,500 at the Harbour Pavilion enchanted. She shared pieces of herself in the mellow, folksy tunes from her debut album Pieces Of You and current release Spirit. Her gig of mostly ballads may not have had the audience jumpin' and jivin' but the spirit was soaring all the same. The crowd cheered each time they recognised the opening bars of her hits: Hands, Foolish Games, You Were Meant For Me and Who Will Save Your Soul. They loved her. Especially, the men. Throughout, the concert was peppered with shouts from wistful males: "Marry me!" or "Be my wife". Proclamations of "I love you, Jewel!" came from the women too. For five songs and half an hour, it almost seemed as if she was just going to sing. Then, she offered a sugary "hi" that was met with a warm chorus returning the greeting. She went on to talk about how she had met her "best friend" -- Steve Poltz, who opened her show with a half-hour set and played acoustic guitar in her backup band -- six years ago, when she was 18. She was a waitress in a cafe and he came in to play gigs. "Just like Friends, who's the girl?" "Phoebe," the auditorium answered. >From that moment, her rapport with the crowd was rock-solid. She was a standup comic act with a guitar. She tickled the audience silly with a tale of a songwriting trip with Poltz -- who co-wrote You Were Meant For Me -- that ended up with them joining in a drug bust. Earlier on, Poltz -- who has a solo album on the Polygram label that is not released in Asia -- had already prepped the crowd for laughs in his opening routine, singing quirky, self-penned tunes on the feelings of a chair and Star Wars. The crowd liked him obviously, for they obliged when he asked them to yell "huuuhhhh" like the Chewbacca character in the movie. He and other band members -- Doug Pettibone (guitar), Steve George (keyboards), Brady Blade (drums) and Tony Hall (bass) -- also scored points when they appeared in Chinese suits bought from Chinatown. But what really pleased the crowd was Jewel coming to the edge of the stage, close to them. At one point, she even stepped off and balanced precariously on a speaker. "Danger girl, huh?" she asked, pleased with the squeals she evoked. More than an hour into her gig, she invited members of the audience to leave their seats and flock forward. "I have a couple of new songs and I want you to tell me what you think," she said. The two middle-of-the-road rock tunes she belted out sounded like a paler version of Sheryl Crow. She closed the show at 11.15 pm with the yodelling song her live act is famed for. As she spit out "yo-de-le-yi" faster and faster, the claps and cheers just got louder and louder. Jewel left Singapore wanting more, and with no doubt that she was the "angel standing by" whom she was singing about. "Fat Boy" & "I'm Sensitive" for b-sides... now, seeing as these are live versions ya woulda thought she'd have put the Edward story thing before "Fat Boy"... that would've just made it so much better and it would've added the emotion missing from the album version to the song, but no, it's just the song on its own... :-( also she cut off the intro for "I'm Sensitive" - it's the same one that's on "Save The Linoleum" so that would've been really neat if she left in that intro too but she didn't... other than that, it's basically just an out-take of the album version, which I guess was recorded at the Innerchange at the same time... oh, and you know that "boop-boop-be-doo, yeah" bit at the start of "Down So Long"... it's always intrigued me how they decided to leave it in for the single version whereas late last year some radio station played it without that bit so I guessed when it came out as a single it would be missing... I'm glad they left it in (although it would've been great to have 2 different versions of the song), it's just strange they did a version of it without it... I guess it was one of those test audience things but they preferred it being left in... hmmmmmm... I posted this information weeks ago but apparently many don't remember it... YES, Jewel will be participating in Woodstock 99. I've heard nothing "official" about this yet, but I remember when Woodtock 94 happenned, the entire 3 days was available as a worldwide Pay-Per-View cable TV event. It's probably likely that something like that will happen again, so EDAs should have ways of catching this set regardless of where you are. We had a 3 day BBQ/Party here during the Woodstock 94 Pay-Per-View & it was MUCH MORE FUN than being there. Plenty of food & drink, available bathrooms & comfortable indoor & outdoor listening/viewing/videotaping 24 hours a day, hehehe. This review appeared in a local S'pore magazine called 8 Days and has 3 nice pics of Jewel and one of Steve's. Jeanette Precious Jewel (By Andy Chen) If Jewel's recent performance in Singapore is anything to go by, the Alaskan singer-songwriter is through with folk music. Pictures usually speak a thousand words. But not the photos here. Herded to the front of the stage for only the first three songs, photographers couldn't capture a booty shaking Jewel, a whooping Jewel, a jazz-vocalising Jewel, and on yes - how can we forget her calling card to fame - a yodelling Jewel. Indeed, by the end of the two-hour show at the Harbour Pavilion last week, Jewel Kilcher had pulled out from her bag of tricks every last show stopping vocal gymnastic stunt. Determined, perhaps to lay to rest Vogue magazine's suggestion that she's the Mariah Carey of Folk. When asked at a press conference the day before the concert when she thought of the dubious epithet - which most likely referred to Mariah's popularity and showboating melismatic vocals - she had expressed objection to the "simplistic label". Her protestation's at least two-pronged: that she's only a strum-and-sing folk musician, and all that she's all smiles. flowers-in-the-hair and angelic sweetness. Ever since she catapulted into the pop scene with her multiple platinum debut, "Pieces of You", Jewel's had to contend with her Polyanna image. She told * DAYS recently, "[The press] are constantly looking for ways I'm not, and there're lots of 'em!" Well, what're the media and fans to think when she's given to such magnanimous sentiments as - "When I'm lying on my deathbed, my success will be determined by the number of people I've been able to help." Surely then we can't be blamed for expecting a little warmth and sincerity in her interaction with the audience. It took about five songs into the concert before Jewel acknowledged her adoring fans, the majority of who were girls from eight to 28 (there was even a grandma), relating to the lengthy anecdote - complete with well-rehearse comic touches and timing - about the origin of the smash single, "YWMFM". The crowd lapped up every word about how she met Steve Poltz (her best friend, guitarist and also her charming opening act) on a songwriting expedition to Mexico, and ended up trailing the police on a drug bust. What personal insight! Then, nothing for the next 44 minutes. No 'How are you feeling, Singapore?', no 'I'm feeling wonderful today', not even 'Is everybody enjoying themselves?'. She delivered song after song mostly from her very- folkish second album, Spirit. "What's Simple is True', 'Jupiter', 'Kiss the Flame', and 'Barcelona'/ Jewel amply demonstrated her magnificent vocal range a la Mariah (a few off-key notes notwithstanding); where she was accompanied only by a piano and a single shaft of spotlight. This was the Alaskan folk princess, as journos have dubbed. Say bye bye to her. For Jewel spent the second half of the concert burying this image with a handful of new numbers. With an electric guitar, she rocked and strutted. With her curvy booty, she grooved, jumped and jiggled. With her elastic vocals, she scatted and yodelled. Why stop at Mariah, when she can be the Sheryl Crow, Tina Turner, Aretha Franklin and Julie Andrews of Folk? The fans previously ensconced in their seats barely twitching an muscle except to applaud, were now thronging the aisles and standing on chairs. Exactly the way Jewel had urged them to do so earlier. "My friends who have performed here told me, [the Singapore audience] are very quiet," she said. She must have missed the part where largely-unknown singer-songwriter Poltz won over the 1,500-strong audience in the short space of 30 minutes. By Poltz's second song, one written from the point of view of an abused chair, everyone was cheering and clapping appreciatively. Without prompting too. I posted this a few weeks ago, but since its handy & we'll be getting many more new people this year (with the tour & all), I'm gonna repost this again every few weeks. Just delete it if you don't need it & let it help those that can benefit from it. Thanks, Alan Hi everyone & especially new Jewel list subscribers! Here's some helpful advice to relatively new subscribers who are usually a bit confused & by no fault of thier own, not knowledgable of the history of the EDAs or these Jewel mailing lists. First of all--WELCOME! Since the list FAQ is almost 4 years old & extremely out of date , it's understandibly difficult for new subscribers to get a grip on all that goes on in this large community. These lists, as you can probably sense, have facilitated the developement of many personal relationships among listmembers. The EDAs have also gone beyond the boundaries of the NET & have participated in quite a few great outside projects geared toward helping others as well as meeting in larger groups at music & non-music related events. The purpose of this email is to give new folks a hand at finding the best resources to help with understanding this group called The EDAs. I promise any new person who takes the time to visit these sites, that you will enjoy the lists much more, feel right at home & be as knowledgable as most seasoned vets. (And those grumpy old vets will appreciate your effort.) I'm sure many of you new folks want to know more, but may not know how to educate yourself about the goings-on here. So here's some helpful suggestions for you. Please take the time to check these out. It's painless, I promise & actually fun. The EDA List Guide: http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup/ This website is THE BEST resource to learn about these mailing lists, basic Jewel knowledge (so you don't have to wonder about simple things or ask questions that have been answered a thousand times.) Just by knowing the content on this site, you will immediately fit in, feel much more comfortable & enjoy yourself here. REALLY! The Official Jewel Site: http://www.jeweljk.com This is Jewel's official site featuring the latest accurate news, tourdates, TV appearance info, Jewel Merchandise, Higher Ground For Humanity, Multimedia, photos & more. The best site for current information! The EDAFoundation: http://www.EveryDayAngels.org The EveryDay Angels Foundation is a non-profit public benefit corporation whose mission is to promote grassroots volunteerism and community involvement. Inspired, created & managed by fellow listmembers who are devoting time & effort to promote activities that directly effect positive change in the world & to help focus the energy of the EDAs as a force to effect positive change. Watch for their posts & find out how you can get involved while having a lot of fun in the process! Gerritt's Jewel Page: http://www.endor.org/jewel/ Another long time site with a lot of great content as well as the best source BY FAR for finding links to all other Jewel sites. Atlantic Records: http://www.atlantic-records.com Jewel's record company's site featuring current industry news, contests & a few complete webcasts of Jewel are also available. And finally, almost the entire history of this list is archived online at: http://www.smoe.org/lists/jewel/archives/ Here is the entire day to day history of this list referenced chronilogically. Not only is this a great resource for historical info, but if you are new or gone for a while, you can go here to read the past few days at any time. There's plenty more of course, but these sites in particular will definitely eleviate most of your confusion & will allow you to have a lot more fun way faster! Help everyone here by helping yourself to these resources. Welcome & enjoy! In a message dated 4/12/99 3:26:55 PM, michielvangorkum@wxs.nl writes: <> Yes, the "Jewel home video" project is rolling along nicely. Bibi, West & video team have been working away editing it for months now. A lot of it is finished & a bit more filming will still take place this month. The final shoot will be at the upcoming Los Angeles HGH Benefit mentioned on Jewel's website. We're hoping to make the video available by the time the US Tour starts or shortly thereafter. <> Yes, it will be available from a wide variety of sources including the website, Jewel's shows & retail (stores). <> Not that I know of. Write Atlantic & request it. That's there territory. <> While I have no idea what goes on at Warner Benelux, I will say that they cannot be responsible for allowing fans to personally give gifts to Jewel or arranging "surprises" at that very large European festival. Jewel prefers that fans NOT give her gifts & everyone who works with her is well aware of that, so they cannot help fans who want to personally give her gifts anyway. There's no excuse if they were rude to you, but you cannot expect the them to accomodate fans who would enjoy "surprising" Jewel with birthday gifts at that festival. <> I cannot "arrange" Jewel concerts. The 25th of May is a travel day to Paris & she's booked for promo work on the 22nd. Now, onto this birthday thing we go through every year... While I understand that everyone has good intentions about wanting to wish Jewel a very happy birthday & some want to give gifts, I highly suggest you read your EDAFoundation mail & participate in THAT birthday project. Jewel will be thrilled if EDAs go out & help others instead of focusing energy on sending messages or giving gifts to her. This can be done by any EDA anywhere! Rather than get all preachy on this, here's a message sent to the EDAs back in 1996 regarding this issue. Keep in mind that its 1999 now & Jewel recieves far more gifts & messages than she did then: >From Nedra: <> end Nedra message There you have it... So.....I encourage anyone who wants to do something nice for Jewel on her birthday, do something nice for someone in need & write the EDAF to tell Jewel (& each other) about it! The EDAF is providing a focus to help anyone who'd like to participate in exactly this. They will be compiling info & messages that are about how EDAs helped others, did volunteer work or anything else directly geared toward humanitarian goals. Watch for their posts & instructions so that they can include your experiences in the book they'll soon be compiling. (You can write them at EDAF@smoe.org) It's important to make the distinction that this book is not for birthday messages. It's to let Jewel enjoy how her work has inspired people to help others & let her know that many EDAs are making a REAL difference. You are welcome, of course, to still send Jewel a birthday message or gift using the email link at her website or the PO box. That's what they're there for. But I encourage you to take part in the EDAF effort & be included in that book. Jewel will recieve that as her 1999 birthday gift from the EDAs. Do your part to make it great! This song is a cover & was written by Cole Porter in 1934. One of Jewel's favorite albums is "Ella Fitzgerald Sings The Cole Porter Songbook". This is where she learned it. And yes, it's the same song well known from the great Broadway musical (but lousy movie) of the same name. Jewel sings it accapella. That's the night they'll help Jay Leno and NBC usher in a new era of high-definition TV as "The Tonight Show" becomes the first regularly scheduled network show to be filmed in the new sharp technology. The show will be on hiatus next week as Jay's studio gets outfitted with seven new HDTV cameras and a new "high-def" control room. The stars better take extra care with their wardrobes and makeup because the high-definition technology will put every one of their features into much sharper focus. Enhancements need to be made to Jay's set too, says Gary Considine, executive producer at NBC's Burbank studios. "We're like the guinea pigs," he said. "We're experimenting with the makeup, the lighting, the camera angles and the backdrop." Although very few people actually own expensive high-definition TV sets, those of us with ordinary sets will see a difference, Considine insists. The goal, he said, "is the prettiest picture you've ever seen on television." Please read carefully! I want to answer a few important questions & update you on some more things before I take off for a few days. I may not be posting again or answering email until all this is over, so please save this info if you need it. First, I'll address two important questions & then on to the new info. I'm getting many emails asking if we can do an all EDA audience again at MTV Total Request Live next week. We did that last time because it was the day MTV celebrated Spirit's release & wanted to include EDAs in the "Jewel TV" special. It wasn't for TRL. TRL was happenning simultaneously, so EDA's experienced both. If you are in NYC & want to attend TRL next week, then I suggest you contact MTV. They get those audiences somewhere & they must have some standard daily procedure for that show. I'm also getting many inquiries about the HGH Benefit Sunday night at the Henry Ford Theater in Los Angeles. This is an intimate private performance with proceeds funding HGH projects. I do have good news for you on this! Here's what's going on. This HGH benefit is being put on by Vogue Magazine, so we had little control on who was invited & making tickets available to you. However approximately 100 tickets were made available to Jewel. Jewel decided that she would like to make all these tickets available to EDAs that would like to attend. Consider this post your personal invitation. :-) Before I give you the instructions, please understand that if you repost this information all over the Internet, then you are basically screwing this up for other EDAs. Scalpers will buy these up immediately if they learn about it, so PLEASE DO NOT repost this info elsewhere. When the tickets are gone they are gone. I cannot do anything & will not reply to any inquiries about this once this is posted. Please just follow the instructions & pass this info on only to friends who will appreciate it. Here's what to do. Call this special ticketmaster #: 213-480-3232. Ask to purchase tickets to the VOGUE HGH BENEFIT in LA on Sunday night. DO NOT ask for the Jewel Concert or they will not know what youre asking for. There is no listing for this other than the VOGUE HGH BENEFIT. (This is also in an effort to avert scalping & allow YOU to get tickets.) If the line is busy, keep trying. All tickets to this intimate HGH benefit are $60 plus service charges. That's it. If you can't afford it & live in LA, she'll be back in LA for a tour stop soon so don't be too upset. You'll also be happy to know that Bibi, West & film crew will be proffessionally filming this concert & I'll be audio recording it for use in Jewel's forthcoming home video project. So you'll all be able to experience some of this concert when the home video is released in several months. Now onto other various other info. Included below is NEW information on the NYC FM interview broadcasting times for next week followed by a recap of all the upcoming US & UK TV. The other new info is that Jewel is taping an interview with BBC Radio 2 for future broadcast today. UK EDAs may want to research air-date & post it. She's also doing an extensive interview with London's Sunday Express Newspaper. I would guess this will be published soon to coincide with the UK Tour. I forget if I told you the release date on the UK "Down So Long" single. That will be released May 24th. This is the version with "Fat Boy" & "Amen" as the live bonus tracks. These two songs were part of the encore recorded on the final night of her last 1997 Europe tour in London. This version of "Amen" is truly remarkable. I guess thats it for now. There's a little article about the album on page 63: Jewel Pieces of You ATLANTIC, FEBRUARY 1995 This barely retouched debut contains the songs responsible for the mighty Jewel dynasty. "Who Will Save Your Soul" is a coffeehouse sing-along on which her voice gorgeously liquefies and scats at the drop of a hat; "You Were Meant for Me," the melodic marvel she wrote with Steve Poltz, lets loose her spiritualized romanticism in the pop-culture mainstream---alongside movies and toothpaste. But Jewel's extraordinary "Foolish Games" clinches it: the heart, the soul, the all-American Edith Piaf strivings, the irresistible feeling of a pop hit as literary lingerire. Ben S. We are going to put it up on the website if tickets are still unsold tonight, so I'd advise making your move if you haven't yet done so & want to attend. Oh...& for those wondering about dress. I heard its casual, but thats in "Vogue terms" which is a world beyond my comprehension. I'm sure there will be a lot of fashion industry people there. Here are the latest plans for EDAs to get together this weekend in Southern California before Sunday night's HGH benefit concert in Hollywood: On Saturday night at Java Joe's in Ocean Beach (San Diego), Gregory Page and his band are playing, and Anya is opening. Gregory, a former "Rugburn," is one of Jewel's favorite musicians. Anya is Steve Poltz's new girlfriend. Joe's is a great place and a terrific spot for EDAs to gather, so that's Saturday night. On Sunday, people will meet at noon at Pink's Hot Dog Stand in West Hollywood, located on La Brea Ave., just north of Melrose Ave. (Pink's is Steve Poltz's favorite place in L.A., BTW.) Afterwards, an early excursion to the Theater to check out who has checked in, and an excursion to a wonderful herbarium where an EDA is apprenticing, are on the agenda. I hope to meet a bunch of new people, and I look forward to seeing old EDA friends, as well. This show is gonna be great! Woo Hoo!! (absolutely great timing there Alan! :-) Anyway, I just found this information on the Atlantic Records website at http://www.atlantic-records.com (I can only hope it is accurate), but I *know* it is just a PARTIAL listing of Jewel's North American tour dates. This listing has only 13 dates and only goes up until late July/Woodstock 99-ish, and I know she has shows in August (maybe into September?). So there is obviously much, much more to come :-) PLEASE....I nor MrBB has any specific information on any particular show, so please do not email us asking for more information, as we do not have any to give. We do not know ticket prices, venue phone numbers, when tickets go on sale etc. So please just call the places below for more information. If you do not know a phone number, call information, please do not post to the list asking for phone numbers. If you get reliable information from a venue, of course feel free to post such things as when tickets go on sale etc. Also....again....I am *100% sure* there are more dates to come, as some large cities/areas are not listed below, including areas that MrBB posted that would be hit this summer, so please just sit tight if your general area is not listed below. "Everybody thinks of me as a Pollyanna hippie type who never loses her temper and is nice all the time, which is utter bullshit. I'm as moody as anybody," says the 24-year-old. "The way preople are always categorising me, it's like being back in school. I find it kind of laughable. Most of the hippie labels stem from Jewel's childhood in Alaska - tales of the family's log cabin and lack of running water have been used to paint a picture of a Swiss Family Robinson situation, but Jewel is far from laid-back about the love-child image. "Nobody has ever really understood about my upbringing," she says, happy to set the record straight. "People have a hard time understanding what living on the land is all about. They have some notion of my parents being barefoot hippies, when they were really just farmers from Europe. Just because of their simple lifestyle they are labelled as hippie freaks." But despite what she says, Jewel's Alaskan upbringing was a little odd. Rather than watching television, Jewel developed a penchant for yodelling, and the local fishermen would place bets on who would be the first to seduce the feisty young blonde. None managed to win the bet as her parents split up and she moved to San Diego with her mother. Sadly for Alpine music enthusiasts, Jewel's Spirit album doesn't contain any of her famous yodelling. What it does offer, however, are soul-searching lyrics and beautiful melodies, along with the odd quote from an ancient philosopher. But mention performers like Madonna and Alanis Morissette and the whole spiritual bandwagon, and Jewel bares her teeth to reveal her true spirit. "God, that's so insulting - to talk of my music as part of a phenomenon. It's an insult to me and an insult to all of us who have worked our arses off." After an apology Jewel calms down and continues. "My music is simply lyric-driven stuff. I don't think I'm very spiritual, all I do is try to be honest. You don't have to stand on one leg and lick your finger and hope to be struck by spirituality like lightning. It's just honesty. Not that you can accuse Jewel of wasting her time - two albums, endless concerts, a book of poetry, a leading role in the movie Ride With The Devil, charity work and a forthcoming book of short stories pack out her CV. Does she ever rest? "Last time I was in New Zealand I only managed to get to visit a vineyard," she says. "This time I have a couple of days off and I hope to go surfing." With so much going on, it's good to see Jewel still manages to get board once in a while. Now she's over here and trying to convince us Brits that deep is meaningful. Catherine McDonnell was open to persuasion Singer songwriter Jewel Kilcher is only 24 but she's already accomplished a lot. Her debut album Pieces Of You sold eight million copies in the US, while Spirit, her second album, has already sold four million copies. Her book of poems entitled A Night Without Armor has sold two million copies and this autumn she makes her acting debut in Ang Lee's Ride With The Devil. Despite such vast achievements, Jewel insists she hasn't found her feet yet. "I see people around me who inspire me," she explains, "And I realise I'm still quite young and unaccomplished for my age." This obviously, is a big fib. No one is "unaccomplished" after achieving so much before they're 25. For Jewel it's not enough though. She's worried about her inner self. She published her book of poetry, she says, so "People could see my vanities as well as my aspirations for goodness." And Jewel's aspirations for goodness are huge, having set up a charity, Higher Ground For Humanity, with her mum Nedra. "We're working on world events as well as local," she says. Jewel is the kind of person who makes you feel guilty for talking about Eastenders when you could be out saving the planet. Peering over her cup, slurping tea through a teaspoon, she talks about trying to understand herself and other people. I tell her in a moment of British-not-searching-for-myself-ness that after 27 years, I know myself pretty well. She looks puzzled. You think you know?" she queries. "I'm nowhere near knowing myself. All the time I'm growing and evolving." "Yeah, Jewel. Me too," I backtrack. Jewel is what can only be described as 'very intense'. You can't ever imagine her dancing to Steps. What could she gain from that experience? Instead of disco dancing to relax, Jewel writes. "If I'm getting uptight, my friends are like: 'Will you just go and write,' because they can tell I haven't written." And Jewel works - all the time, "I haven't had a day off in five years," she states. Mainly, however, Jewel is sorting her head out. "I write because I have thoughts," she explains. Jewel grew up on an Alaskan farm which had no electricity or running water. Aha, is this the root of Jewel's deep thinking? She thinks not. "Everybody feels they were having a hard time," she muses. "Whether people are rich or poor, everybody thinks, 'What's wrong with me? Why aren't I getting along?'." After life on an 800-acre homestead you'd have thought Jewel had had enough hardship for one lifetime. She hadn't, though and aged six, she earned money by travelling with her father and singing to a host of unsavoury characters. "I saw a lot of cultures," she explains. "From bikers to American veterans with missing limbs. It taught me compassion for people. It made me try and be as thoughtful as I could in my own life so at least my life can be my own choice instead of a thoughtless thing." Thankfully, Jewel isn't always a complete goody-goody. Sighing as she goes through the list of places she is soon to tour - Europe, Australia, Asia, the US - she says she's suffering from tour fatigue. "I get tired of travelling, even though I look forward to doing the shows. And I find promotion hard. You don't get gratification for doing it." I smile at Jewel in this, her hour of need. "You sometimes get a bit jaded I expect," I sympathise. "Jaded?" she asks, her voice rising for the first time. "Do I sound jaded to you?" There's a dramatic pause. "You do a bit..." I mumble. "Well, if you listen to your tape you'll find I don't sound jaded," she snaps. I listen to the tape when I get home. Talking about her tour, Jewel sounds jaded. Jewel, is a star who is adamant she didn't work to be a star. She wants to make it clear success fell into her lap and her massive album sales and huge popularity just happened. "I never wrote thinking people were going to hear my songs," Jewel explains, so sincerely it's hard not to believe her. "I wrote because I wanted to write songs. It was something I did in private. It just turned out bigger." And how it did. At 18 Jewel left her dad, moved into a van and sang in coffee shops to earn money. A record deal arrived. Fame, success, money were hers. But for Jewel, living in the car was "more free and lovely." In a way it's almost too easy to knock Jewel. We're British. Our feet are firmly on the ground. We'd rather dance to hits like Cleopatra's Theme than hum along to folksy deep stuff. "I'm inspired by the Dalai Lama, Martin Luther King, Buddha, Jesus, my mom..." says Jewel, and the urge to pat her gently on the head and say, "But of course you are," is almost too great. Despite all this, some of her songs ain't half bad. ------------------------------ Chris. Jewel was put in there for pieces of you, they have a nice little segment, and a picture of her album cover, but its sweet that Jewel was concidered one of the best. Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hi, all you aspiring guitar players out there! Seriously, I have spotted a couple of requests for Jewel tabs. Rather than reply to individuals, I thought I may as well post what I've found over the past couple of months. Check out these sites:- Planet Jewel http://www.tanweb.com/jewel On Line Gutar Archive http://www.harmony-central.com/ Online Guitar College http://www.eskimo.com/~ogre/library.html Jewel Shrine http://users.wantree.com.au/~awatson/jewel.htm Obviously not all tracks are there (yet). Try to get a couple of versions of each song - they may well have different authors so you may find one easier than another. Please note that some of the tabs are scarily accurate!! Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hi all, Just rolled in from San Diego & I'm exhausted so I'll ramble incoherantly before I crash out for at least 12 hours! We updated Jewel's website calendar while I was out there so check it for the most current info. MANY MORE North American dates will be posted so keep checking it for updates & corrections. (Some dates & venues are still being switched around, so expect a change here & there.) There's also some changes to the European Tour Calendar. This is also now updated & accurate on Jewel's website. Also, we now have Jewel's 1999 Spirit Tour Books available exclusively from the website store. So for anyone who was unable to purchase one in Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia or Singapore, you can purchase them through the website store. Ditto for anyone who'd prefer not waiting for the shows. They are quite nice & blow away all previous tour books. Have a look if interested at the www.jeweljk.com store. (They will be available at all shows in Europe & North America, as well.) It was nice seeing a bunch of you at the HGH Benefit. I hope everyone enjoyed themselves. Sorry, I wasn't able to spend more time with ya, but we were all focused on the audio & video recording, which came out wonderful. You can look forward to some of the results in the Jewel home video we'll be releasing later this year. Bibi, West & the video team are already editing footage as I write this. :-) I have several emails asking me if various celebs were REALLY there Sunday night sitting amongst you. While I didn't see all the people you folks have written me about, Elle McPherson, Dianne Cannon & Michael Keaton were there hanging out. And yes, the extraordinarily talented guitar designer Danny "Plywood Cow" Ferrington was also wandering around. (I hear his "cows" are now as popular as his guitars! ;-) I also caught a great show at Java Joe's Saturday night. Anya Marina (who happens to be Steve Poltz's girlfriend) performed a very enjoyable & often hilarious set of original material. She was quite good & Steve joined her for a few tunes. Anya was followed by a wonderful set by Gregory Page & The Troubled Sleepers. I highly recommend checking out Gregory. This band really kicked ass & put on a great show! Lenedra & I had a cozy dinner last night at The Chart House at the marina in Oceanside, CA (delicious!) & she told me a hilarious story that happenned to them in New Zealand which I'll try to paraphrase & post about this weekend. I need to restore my weary jetlagged brain cells first, so I can accurately tell it. I'll fill you in on progress about various things & hopefully capture the above mentioned story this weekend sometime. One of the things she recorded was a concert that will be aired next month. It's scheduled for Saturday May 22nd at 5:28 p.m. and will last 45 min. It will air on Canal +, a paying Spanish TV channel. Hope all the Spanish EDAs will watch it. If you like the sight of grown men dissolving into gooey puddles then get ye down to the Gore. Time Out - April 28 Still yet to emulate her mega success Stateside, this is Kilcher's first London show with a full band. Alaskan raised Kilcher is possessed of a wonderful talent, only let down by a tendency for worthy self-celebration. Following up her ten million selling debut, her second album, 'Spirit' (Atlantic), more than consolidated her earlier promise. It is a work of rare depth and spiritual assurance, infusing the melodic grace of early Joni Mitchell with the spunky ire of Liz Phair. What's On In London - April 28 They say that beauty is exemplified by slight imperfection. This is quite true. Take Jewel, an absolutely ravishing American beauty with teeth that have clearly never visited a dentist. Okay, so she's not quite Shane MacGowan in the dental department, but her crooked pearly whites offset her otherwise faultless face to the extent that everyone notices. Perhaps it's contributed to her fortune? Jewel has sold over ten million albums of insipid acoustic poetry, and, after something resembling a backwards brainwave, she's also published a book of insipid poetry, without the acoustics, which has now sold two million. She is, therefore, America's First Lady of letters, but she's hardly a communicator in the way Tori Amos is, and neither is she zeitgeisty like Alanis is - or at least was. No, essentially Jewel sings vaguely pretty songs in a very pretty way. So of course there's an audience for her. (See you there, then. Front row.) - -------------------------------------- Chris.
