Well, on the anniversary of JS in '97, Mark Nissley (otherwise known as Crunch :-) asked who was interested in communing at the original campsite used by many who attended the original JewelStock. So that those who did not attend the original JS did not feel excluded, we decided to simply call it Bearsville '00 (insert year ;-), rather than a JS reunion. So, for the last two years a good 30 to 40 of us have been trekking it to the Bearsville area to celebrate the anniversary of JS and just bask in the company of our fellow EDA's - and if any EDA should happen to get shot, so be it ;-) (Don't worry, we only had laser guns - heh). Anyway, any and all EDA's are welcome to attend - as the event comes closer, I will certainly post more info, but since I know some of you may need to give work, family, or whomever advance notice, I thought I'd send out a reminder of the event. If you really need more info or something, you can e-mail me about this event at BRSVL99@aol.com - please do not respond to this address as the e-mail would very likely be overlooked! We had a great time the last couple years and I hope to see all the same old tired faces ;-) and lots of new ones!!!! Both an Angelheart necklace & a set of pierced earings will be available in sterling silver with an Amethyst setting. Also, when the guests on this program are musicians and play any of their songs they usually do it acoustically in a small stage. Maybe we will be able to see Jewel sing a song from Spirit playing guitar herself and without a supporting band. For these reasons I think this a show not to miss. I will tape the show, so if there are non-Spanish EDAs interested in it maybe we can arrange some trade. Take care, Dani. There's more new content up on almost every part of Jewel's site in the past 48 hours. If you haven't stopped by lately, visit us again at www.jeweljk.com. There's new HGH info & multimedia, more news items (Go Australia Go!), more rumors addressed, journal entries, artwork, calendar info & photos! There's basically new content everywhere including the exit page! Here's other specific info related to the Jewel Store: As some of you requested, you can now simply order a JMerch catalogue online. Several people have asked about the stickers that disappeared from the site awhile back. Here's info on that. Both the HGH & Jewel stickers are once again available via the site (they're $1.50 each although that info is only on the order form.) They are high quality vinyl-type stickers, NOT paper, so they make good window decals or bumper stickers. You can view them on the JewelStore pages. Also as promised, the EDA Jewelry is now on the site. Both an Angelheart necklace & a set of pierced earings are available in sterling silver with an Amethyst setting. The new Italian sterling necklace features an Amethyst setting in a beautiful angel design. The matching set of pierced earrings, also in sterling silver, features an Amethyst stone. Both come gift boxed. A portion of the proceeds from every sale will be donated to the Jenna Druck Foundation to assist families who have experienced the loss of a child. You can view it online at the Jewel Store on the site. Over the past few years, many of you expressed interest in EDA Jewelry & that inspired the creation & design of these pieces. So for those interested in EDA jewelry as well as supporting a cause worthy of your support, I invite you to take a look at the EDA Jewelry designed with YOU in mind. I'm leaving for San Diego later this weekend & will be out of touch for awhile. I'll still be updating content on the website as I can. I'm looking forward to seeing some of you westcoasters while I'm around. I hope some of you are going to see Cindy Lee Berryhill at Twiggs in San Diego next Wednesday night. If so, say hi! I'll be that disoriented guy that looks suspiciously "East Coast". ;-) MrBB From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Sat Feb 13 12:06:39 1999 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id MAA04202 for jewel-news-outgoing; Sat, 13 Feb 1999 12:06:16 -0500 (EST) Message-Id: <199902131706.MAA04202@smoe.org> From: "Fernando Monteverde C" Date: Sat, 13 Feb 1999 02:35:13 -0000 To: jewel-news@smoe.org Subject: Jewel-News: Jewel on Spanish TV. Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk hi there, Jewel was here in Spain (I don't know if she is still here). Today, Friday she was on an hour tv-show. She was interviewed and she sang JUPITER live and only with her guitar. The interview was in Spanish, so there were a simultaneous translation that failed in the first part of the show. They introduce her showing part of here interpretation of the National Anthem for the SuperBowl. They put the last part of What's Simple Is True live in a concert the night before in Madrid. She was playing with a five members band with Steve Poltz (It looks him) on Acoustic guitar, 2 synthesisers a bass player and the drummer. It looks like a small theatre, they said that it was in the Medicine college and it was a "private concert". When they ask her if they were all doctors, she said no, they were fans. So what is a private concert? They talked about -Barcelona (the song). Patience, disillusions and failure. -That the last time that she was in Spain she ride a pregnant horse (=mare?). The interviewers ask her if she know that the small horse that born was called Jewel in her honour. But she think that the story is that the just born horses are like a Jewel, so it is a word game. They show a picture of her lie in a horse. -They ask her is she takes with her a small box with some ground from her homeland, but she answered before the interviewer said what there were into the box, and said that it is just absolute false, that it's just a rumour. She sometime has carried with her things but not this. I think that she was thinking in something from the An EveryDay Angel book by Tracey West were you could read that she revealed in an interview with Alaska Center that: "I carry a Tupperware of dirt from the farm and when it starts getting too thick, I just open it and smell the earth". -Alaska - Yodelling -She has a Spiritual father that tell her that she have to learn to talk with her heart and that's because she started to write. Break -Living in a van for 1 year. Surf. She have a shower in the beach. -Innerchange. Small piece of Hands, the video. -She try to use a yo-yo that someone from the show gave her some minutes before. -Night Without Armour. 300000 books sold. -If a poem comes with a melody, it's a song but if it come without music it for a book. -She'll have a book out in 2 month. She's still writing it, usually she write at night. -Cine. She likes how the song that she wrote for the Crossing Guard was into the film. A short clip from the Ride With The Devil film. -It'll be out at cinemas in USA in June, and in September in Spain. -She says that La Vida Es Bella (nominated for best film and for best film in foreigner language for the Oscars) is a Very Beautiful film. by Bellini. -And finally she sang JUPITER along with her guitar. Gracias was her last word. MrBB, as the last time, please, as soon as you know if she recorded more things for Spanish TV, Let as know please!!. It was my first time to see Jewel perform with a complete band... and it sure gives the songs another dimension. One of the bandmembers was Steve Poltz himself... no need to say it rocked!... To give it some extra Jewel was announced by the big boss of Atlantic Records. Here's the complete setlist: * Deep water (with band) * What Simple Is True (with band) * Hands (with band) * Hey Jupiter (with band) * Enter From The East (solo accoustic) * Foolish Games (guided by piano) * Who Will Save Your Soul ? (funny reggae version with band) * Do You (with band) * Down So Long (very heavy version with band) * You Were Meant For Me (new version with band) -- Encores * Passing Time (new song solo accoustic) * Absence Of Fear * Chime Bells * Angel Standing By (complete silence in the audience---awesome) Afterwards Jewel took a lot of time giving out autographs and talking with the fans, proving that she is still one of the few stars that appreciate their fans. I'm already looking forward to her european tour to see the full show... None of the views expressed here are my own. :) Sunday, February 7, 1999 The Domino Man looks at RIDE WITH THE DEVIL Well the Domino Man is back, this time to review Ang Lee's latest. A while back I believe I read a negative review over at Garth's site, but this time out it gets a better nod. But from the sounds of things from Mr Man here, it looks like Ang is using the ol test screening process the way you are supposed to.... honing your film to a sharp edge.... and with the amount of time between now and when this movie hits screens in the fall... you better believe he has all the time in the world to nail it. Or at least we hope..... Though I've never known Ang to make a bad film yet... The DOMINO MAN has once again sneeked his way into an impressive new film in the test screening phase called Ride With the Devil. It is directed by Ang Lee of Sense and Sensibility and The Ice Storm fame with a great ensemble cast headed by Tobey Maguire(Pleasantville), Skeet Ulrich(The Newton Boys), Jeffrey Wright(Basquiat) and Jewel. This is the second time I had the opportunity to see this film. The first time I witnessed a cut close to 3 hours, and if you remember a while back on the site- a spy had confessesd to many black folk walking out of the screening due to the ratial overtones that run through the film. On 2nd viewing the cut was down to just under 150 minutes and the overtones seem to have been notched down a level, but not by much. It is essentially a drama set during the civil war and follows a group of young bushwackers-Southern guerilla fighters who roam the countryside. As the war progresses, two of the fighters-a former black slave(Wright) and the son of a German immigrant worker(Maguire) find they have more in common with each other than their fellow guerillas, who begin to suspect them of treason. Although a period peice, this is a different type of Ang Lee film. There are many bloody battle scenes. He handles them with a gritty, balls to the wall reality- not unlike SPR though a little less frenetic. The performances are solid across the board. Tobey Maguire along with Ed Norton are slowly becoming the actors of their generation. Maguire portrays Jakob Brodel who early on gets his pinky finger blown off. This pays off hansomely toward the end when he uses this stubby finger to put Jewel's baby to sleep. Skeet Ulrich is surprisingly rather damn good considering the lack of emotion in his previous films. He dies halfway through the film though!..Oops-sprang that spoiler on you. Geoffrey Wright as the black slave is near perfect and balances his growing relationship with Brodel effortlessly. Jewel, I'll have you know, may have found a new career outlet in acting-better than poetry I assure you. Plus you get to see her breasts-be it for a few seconds-which I should think is worthy for the price of admission alone. Jonathon Rhys Meyer also shows up in a supporting role. I hated his character-in fact I literally wanted to leap into the screen and beat him senseless. However, this was the nature of his character-so all is forgiven. Tom Wilkinson has a 5 minute came.Surely he should be getting better opportunities to star in bigger roles since his comedic performance in the Full Monty(Rush Hour anyone?). Apart from great dialogue and plot, there is also some gorgeous scenic shots of the forrest and brush-dominated with vivid shades of green and brown. Looks like Universal are finally pulling some rabbits out of their collective hats-what with this, American Pie, and The Mummy. Now all they need to do is market them. Deja-vu perhaps? Thanks to my friend and accomplished musician Mark Chaplin for his professional translation. The story of Jewel could begin with a showing of Chaplin's film The Gold Rush. The Klondike and Alaska were the last territories after the American West to be colonised. What's more, gold attracted a lot of people there. Jewel's grandfather didn't go there to find gold, but to take part in the drawing up of the map uniting this glacier-infested region inhabited by Eskimos to the other American states. He had even come from afar - from Switzerland, and was called Yule (as in Brynner). His son Atz Kilchner, who had returned from the Vietnam war, fell into the country-folk scene, touring the restaurants and singing with his own nugget of gold - Jewel - who was six years old. Jewel was nearly eight when things turned sour. Her parents divorced, and her mother cleared off for the West Coast. One can understand why, because Anchorage is a strange old dump of a place. There's one good thing about it, though - it has one of the most impressive hydroplane airports. Everyone has their own little plane (an authentic Beaver..!), and goes flying over the lakes and stretches of smooth water. That's not what is missing. Even the last owners of the little mines come by helicopter to pick up a few little nuggets to live quietly and comfortably in the town. But people still get a little bored there. To the point that the government gave bonuses and tax exemptions to volunteers who would willingly freeze their balls off to work in the Valdez petrol factory. Young Jewel was nearly 16 when she left for Michigan to study at the Interlochen Arts Academy, where she learned singing, sculpture and drawing. Surrounded by men, her father and two brothers - not to mention the course fur traders with beards and checked shirts - it was time to split. Later on, she joined her mother in California, where she discovered surf, sun and tanned people. She bummed around all over the place, singing her folk repertoire, and took menial jobs which she didn't hold down for long. This was her darkest period, without a roof or any law to govern her, and with health problems to boot. She had no insurance, so the hospital wouldn't take her. However, she managed to avoid serious kidney trouble thanks to a friend, John Katchur, who taught her guitar and paid her hospital fees. After this misadventure, she left her small apartment and lived in a van, a camping car (like her mother), and began travelling the length and breadth of the region, singing in coffee houses. Through meeting local musicians, she won her first contract with the Innercharge Cafe. Atlantic Records subsequently noticed her and signed her up for her first album, Pieces of You. A very natural piece of work - a snapshot of her then 19 years - the album is not a major piece of gold bursting into a million flights of genius, but has still sold 10 million copies. It was therefore time to reflect and get to work immediately on a second album. The result is Spirit, which is clearly a work more connected - surprise, surprise - with spiritual matters and faith. It makes one think of alter egos like Sheryl Crow with its folk-pop-rock leanings, and especially Alanis Morissette or Lauryn Hill (???? - never heard this comparison before - A), who themselves tend towards mystical folk-singer status. Perfect version. - WWSYS. - Down So Long. With a long and really great different end for the song. 6 songs in 28 minutes, as you could imagine she didn't talk between song, maybe because she didn't know if the audience understand what she say, I don't know, just a thought. All the way, less talk = more songs. I would like if she... ,well I'm gonna have to get off of here. Well, thanks Jewel for record that for us. Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hi All, Where to start? There's some great things in progress (other than the tour of course) & this post will catch you up on news sure to be of interest to everyone here, including calendar stuff clarification. Lets get the calendar stuff out of the way first. We'll have Jewel's website calendar updated accordingly but had little time this past week so here's the missing stuff & a few corrections in a somewhat chronological order. After today, keep checking www.jeweljk.com for more info & future updates. There will be more new appearances on Australian TV during this month but I'm relying on you Aussie EDAs to help me out by posting when you learn about these things. We often don't know info until the day of the tapings. This Saturday Jewel will appear on "Hey Hey Its Saturday" & on March 7th, Australian MTV will be having a "Jewel Day". They'll be broadcasting several Jewel features beginning at 10:00AM. Programs include MTV "FANatic", "Collections"(featuring all of Jewel's videos), a rebroadcast of "JewelTV" & others. See the website calendar for the complete concert schedule. No new info on North American TV appearances other than MTV's BIORhythm has been moved up a day to March 2nd at 10:30PM EST. The other important one is the VH1 "Jewel Rocks The Rockies" special on March 6th. This is the concert that launched "Higher Ground For Humanity" & was recorded at the beautiful Wheeler Opera House in Aspen Colorado this past January 22nd. Moving on, these NEW concert dates have been added in S.E. Asia: March 29 & 30 SINGAPORE TV Promo tapings (check local listings & post info!) Wednesday, March 31 - Harbour Pavilion, SINGAPORE Thursday, April 1 - Putra World Trade Center, Kuala Lumpur, MALAYSIA Other than the public concerts in Japan during the 1st weeks of April, Jewel will be doing quite a bit of Japan TV promo so please post if you know what they are. I'll post what I can on the website calendar but I'm sure to miss a few. Oh & the March 4th previously listed Tokyo show is on March 10th now. All the May UK Concert dates are already on the website, but more Promo TV will surely happen there, as well. Many are writing me about future Europe & especially North American tour dates. PLEASE be patient. I will definitely let the EDAs know in plenty of time! All those "web reports" of the US tour beginning at The Gorge in WA on July 2nd are wrong. The long awaited US tour begins on June 25th & will run all the way through mid August. There's extensive coverage & you long neglected EDAs down south WILL have tour stops this time! :-) Canadian dates too. The 30th Anniversary "Woodstock 99" Festival this summer is also possible. Could that be the biggest Bearsville Reunion or what!? ;-) Also while we're talking tour, I'd just like to address the International EDAs. I have an invitation for you. We'd like to feature your Jewel concert reviews (& setlists if possible) on Jewel's website. I'd like to put the most interesting & informative EDA reviews on Jewel's website on the appropriate calendar dates. Then you'll have a handy resource on the site for setlists, reviews, etc & can easily keep up with the tour as it progresses. We'll continue doing this all year if you'll help. Sound like a good idea? Please contribute & let all online fans enjoy your experiences! OK. Onto lots of NEWS (You still with me?): Last Thursday night Jewel was honored by the United Nations group Time For Peace. TFP's Founders Award was presented to Jewel recognizing her work on the album "Pieces Of You" & poetry book "A Night Without Armor". Jewel shared the award with her mother Nedra Carroll & stated that her inspiration for peace came from Nedra. On Saturday, Jewel & her new band completed the final footage of the new "Down So Long" video in Culver City, CA (at the same studio where "Gone With The Wind" was filmed). Once again, Lawrence Carroll ("Foolish Games" video) directed. Surrounded by friends, road crew & management team, Jewel & the band had a good time getting the final footage completed. It was a reunion & a farewell simultaneously as Jewel, Band & Crew flew off to Australia to begin her World Tour later that night. The video will soon premiere on MTV & VH1 & I'll keep you informed when the exact date is scheduled. The JTeam video crew (BiBi, West & Michael) captured a lot of "behind the scenes" action including some hilarious stuff that may surface in clips on the website & in the "JEWEL HOME VIDEO PROJECT" which is progressing with amazing results! YES, thats right. There will be a major Jewel home video release later this year. I know you've all been patiently waiting for this for a long time & I can assure you it will definitely be worth the wait! Bibi screened some of it for me this past week & I was blown away by the style & how absorbing it was. It captures Jewel's adventures from the days of those early 1995 residency tours traveling around the country in a van through the present. It will feature lots of great never seen performances. It also reveals glimpses of the muse that inspires those working with Jewel. I think all EDAs are gonna flip over this & we hope to have it available to coincide with the US Tour. At the video shoot, I met the talented guitar designer Danny Ferrington (Jewel's blue guitar designer/builder) & he has other talents, hehehe... He built that foldable plywood cow featured on Jewel's Roseanne Show appearance awhile back. He gave me "team roping 101" lessons out on the studio loading dock. Yep, I was lassoing up a storm...NOT! Needless to say, I need a LOT of practice! Out of approx 40 tries, I managed to hit the cow a few times though... (And yes, I'm building my own & will practice, practice, practice! It's kind of addicting.) Other news of interest: There's a beautifully designed new 50+ page Spirit Tour Book that will be available at shows as well as new Tour shirts. All the photos in the book are recent ones taken at the pre-tour rehearsals in LA & the Aspen Concert. We may also make these items available on the website Jewelstore & I'll keep you informed on that. Also many have written asking about the new Joy Eden Harrison album "Unspoken" & the new Cindy Lee Berryhill "Living Room 16" CD. YES, they are out & I'll post specificaly on that. I want to write that up seperately so I can post it to other lists. Look for those posts soon. :-) And finally, here's something you'll find interesting. Sometime in April, Jewel's mom/manager Nedra would enjoy having a PRIVATE CHAT with the EDAs. Since neither of us are terribly functional in chat rooms, we're thinking about something like this the first time around: We'd like 5 EDAs who are on AOL to participate in a live private chat with Nedra. We both think it could be fun. We realize many are not on AOL & are not elligible, but since we're both on AOL, it's the only way to go this time. I'm sure you'll agree that having AOL EDAs participate directly is better than not doing it at all. You can figure out between now & then who will represent the EDAs & who could moderate. Afterwards I'll post the entire chat transcript so all can enjoy the communication. I will suggest that only respectful, knowledgable & curious EDAs should be chosen to make the best of this idea. If this works well, we'll do it again. It's up to The EDAs to work out details with your list manager Mike & then I'll have Nedra join the 5 EDAs sometime in April. :-) I also want you all to know that we're still in the infancy of www.jeweljk.com. We have many plans which include the EDAs & we'll be improving things continuously. Keep checking in with us. We also have digital cameras on the road now & will be adding a lot of tour content so you can ride along with us! Thanks for reading such a long post. My one typing finger is worn out now... I enjoyed seeing a few of you in CA last week. I'm off to the basement to build that plywood cow. Gotta practice my roping! Yeeha! Best wishes! Many seem to be under the impression that Jewel is doing the Lilith Fair this year & are writing Mike & I about it. I've no idea where this report is coming from but no, Jewel is NOT scheduled for any Lilith Fair dates. If that changes for any reason, I'll let you know, but she'll be busy on her own tour of North America all summer & that will not change. :-) Now, the Joy Eden Harrison info I promised earlier! What's new with Joy Eden Harrison? Everything! I know many of you loved Joy's "Living Room Tour 98" gigs. Many other EDAs are familiar with her from her first album "Angel Town" & the EDA list tapes "Innerchange Days 2" and "Future Folklore 3". 'Unspoken' is Joy's long awaited second CD released on Astarte Records. Building on her first album, Joy's orginal take on vintage '30's jazz, "Unspoken" features a far greater range of musical expression and texture. Staying true to her Jazz roots but blending some pop overtones into the mix has really allowed Joy to take a giant leap forward in my opinion. These new recordings have captivated my attention for months now & continue to fascinate me after many repeated listenings. It's by far my favorite release so far this year & has the kind of depth that I know I'll still enjoy many years from now. But don't take my word for it. Go to www.joyedenharrison.com & listen to some of it for yourself! How you ask? The new album can be found, sampled, and advance purchased off her website at www.joyedenharrison.com. Joy is also touring the country with CD Release concerts throughout the year so keep checking back at her website for new tour dates. She's now on the west coast & will be performing quite a bit. The current tour scedule includes several California shows with the studio band in March & a Living Room gig is scheduled for Phoenix. On March 13th, Java Joe's in San Diego will host Joy's "official release day" concert. Joy's current schedule follows below. Check out these shows! You can thank me later. ;-) Also, you can join a news-only list for Joy at NewsJEH@aol.com. This list sends out updates every two weeks including new tour dates, radio shows interviews, and articles. There's also a "new nieghbor list" on the smoe server for discussion about Joy & her music. To join it e-mail Candle- request@smoe.org with only the word "subscribe" in the body of the e-mail. It's not begun yet but is functioning now. When her new album gets heard, this list will surely grow. OK. Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-transfer-encoding: 7bit X-Mailer: AOL 4.0.i for Mac sub 189 Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hi all, As many of you are already well aware, the past two years of Living Room Tour "house concerts" have been quite an experience featuring an ever growing list of talent. Thankfully, other lists such as Ecto are also "LRT active" now and hosting intimate concerts at subscribers homes. It's a GREAT THING & I hope the LRT concept spreads everywhere eventually. Several EDAs wrote me recently asking if anything is planned for summer 1999 regarding the LRT. At the moment nothing is in progress but I'd sure like to see it happen again. We have a nice little NorthEastern USA EDA host network now, so thats handy. While I was in San Diego last week, I mentioned the LRT to local favorites Gregory Page & Frank Lee Drennen (aka The Hatchet Brothers). They seemed open to the idea so thats a possibility. Now onto the reason I'm actually writing. A wonderful piece of the Living Room Tour has just been officially released on CD by Griffith Park Records in the form of Cindy Lee Berryhill's new album titled "Living Room 16". Titled as such as it was the 16th gig on the now legendary LRT recorded in San Francisco on January 17th, 1998. This particular gig was notable as it was a one off duo gig where CLB was augmented by the incredible "Garage Orchestra" album cellist Renata Bratt. The CD features 11 live tracks including several new CLB tunes along with extended spontaneous versions of older material including an almost 11 minute long "UFO Suite"! The music is inspired & the recording captures the living room ambience. It was recorded by strategically placing microphones around the room as well as on the musicians direct to ADAT (8 track digital) & remixed to stereo. I should also mention that the liner notes recognize the Jewel, Ecto & Audities lists as the inspiration behind this touring concept & album. The CD will soon be available in some US stores & will also have European distribution in stores, but why wait? There are currently 500 autographed & numbered limited edition copies available directly from the following webpage on CLB's website: http://www.twomp.com/livingroom16/ There's online ordering information (& more info in general) there. Also check out CLB's Tearaway Page at: http://www.mwpsoft.com/clb/index.htm If you're a CLB fan already, you'll love this CD & if you're curious what the LRT's were like, here's a wonderful opportunity to experience it vicariously through the music & hilarity digitally captured on "Living Room 16". This and Joy Eden Harrison's new CD "Unspoken" (which CLB produced by the way) are on heavy rotation here! My next post will be about Joy's CD ordering info & current tour of the SouthWest USA. I highly recommend checking into both these artists if youre not already hip to them. Both are creating wonderfully unique totally infectious music & are well worth your attention.
