Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk eda's, i haven't been really keeping up with the list because i've been super busy lately, so i don't know if what i'm about to relate to you guys is new or if i'm the millionth one. anyway, i knew all of you would be greatly excited to hear that in dallas there is a radio station that has already played "hands" like 4 times! they made a big huge deal about "world-premiering" it last night at about 6pm cst, and they've played it a few times since then, including twice today on their number one rated morning show (translation: a lot of people heard it). they also got a cease and desist (spelling?) order this morning from atlantic records, so they'll have to wait until the official release date to play it again. what i thought was great about it was that everybody is excited to hear her new stuff, and they talked really nicely about it afterwards. i couldn't catch all the lyrics, and i don't know if they're already out, but the chorus i'm sure about: my hands are small i know but they're not yours they are my own but they're not yours they are my own and i've (are?) never broken the beginning is strings with piano, and is kind of reminiscient of "foolish games", but then a great drum line kicks in, and the guitars and i think a bass line, and it's very lush and layered. there are also some great background vocals with some beautiful harmonies, and they bring an almost tori amos-like quality to a few bars of the melody. this is purely my own opinion of it, of course! she starts off saying: if i could tell the world just one thing it would be that we're all ok again, i'm not sure about all the lyrics, but she goes on to say some things along the lines of: worrying is wasteful and useless, and she's not going to be rendered useless. also that in the end only kindness matters. it's a great song, definitely in my jewel top 5 list!!! sorry again if this is old news, but i'm so excited!!! email me privately if you want some more info, and i'll tell you what i can! later... sam From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Fri Oct 2 20:22:58 1998 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id UAA00078 for jewel-news-outgoing; Fri, 2 Oct 1998 20:22:44 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <199810030022.UAA00078@smoe.org> Date: Fri, 2 Oct 1998 10:51:47 -0600 (MDT) From: Charlie Watkins To: Everyday Angels Subject: Jewel-News: SJC: Woodrell book signing, "Woe to Live On" author Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Author Daniel Woodrell, whose 1987 novel Woe to Live On was filmed as "Ride With the Devil" in the Kansas City area last spring by director Ang Lee, will discuss the novel and sign copies of his books at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Johnson County Library's Antioch branch, 8700 Shawnee Mission Parkway. Also, to all who are anxiously awaiting hearing Jewel's new single "Hands", most major radio stations should have the promo single by the 19th now. This game is broadcast on the Fox Network at 7:30PM EST tonight on the East Coast. Check local listings for broadcasts elsewhere. And heres my answer to this: Nubbay@aol.com asked: Does Anyone Know Why Jewel Hates "Free Bird" ?????? Jewel doesn't actually "hate" this famous Lynyrd Skynyrd song. For those folks who don't understand this question, let me elaborate. In the United States, beginning in the late 1970's, probably the most common "joke request" heard from audiences for any musician or band was for "Free Bird". It became such a common joke request as to become cliche'. In the early 70's, & prior to "Free Bird" being written, the same thing would happen to almost every performer with people yelling for "Stairway To Heaven" (by Led Zeppelin). It's really nothing more than people yelling for a song they know is a ridiculous (& funny?) request. So....Jewel doesn't actually hate the song "Free Bird". Her negative reaction is to people constantly yelling out such a cliche' & overused joke. Joy has a limited supply of these limited edition tapes left over from the LRT & you can mail order directly from her while they last. The tapes are $12 including shipping & handling. For those unfamiliar with all the hoo-hah surrounding this album, its a major leap forward from her critically acclaimed first album "Angel Town" while staying true to her jazz roots. The songs are more engaging than that first album, in my opinion, & the musicians on it all put on great performances. Cindy Lee Berryhill sat in the producers chair & arranged the incredible string parts played by Garage Orchestra cellist Rennatta Bratt & a small string section. I highly recommend this album to all who have enjoyed Joy's music in the past & I think many more will become enamored with her soon. First of all, it's a >Civil War Drama that stars Tobry Maguire (I never heard of him until >this), Jeffrey Wright, Skeet Ulrich, and Jewel (the singer) of all >people. Directed by Ang Lee, this movie takes sort of the "opposite" >viewpoint of the Civil War--through a Southerner's viewpoint. We sort >of, I explain later. > > The film centers around Maguire, who plays an American born German >Southerner. It's on the brink of war and like most of his southern >friends he feels very patriotic to the South and wants to fight for >them. Flash one year into the war--We see Maguire and Ulrich, best >friends BTW, fighting for the south. Except, they're not in any kind >of army, they're mercenary "rider" types who go around the South >dressed as confederate citizens but killing any unsuspecting union >troops along the way. Along they way Maguire and Ulrich meet Jeffrey >Wright, a black man loyal to the confederate cause and willing to fight >along side them. As I said before, it sort of is through >the Southerner's viewpoint, but not really. Many wrong assumptions. A "seasonal CD" was part of the idea at the starting point, but that's about it. "Spirit" is Jewel's 2nd (followup to POY) album. It simply has a focus of love, caring & spirituality running through it. To quote Jewel's website: >There's a quote from "Hands" that Jewel has been saying for years: "In >The End Only Kindness Matters". That sentiment eminates as the theme >throughout the rest of the CD. "Spirit" is beautiful and lyrical. The CD >is an antidote - it encourages thought and inspires goodness. This should clearly explain why you're not going to get songs like "Carnivore", "Nicotine Love", "Fading Away", "Tough Girl", "Love Me Leave Me Alone", "Satellite" (& others often mentioned) this time around. These are all angry and/or cynical songs & they totally do NOT fit what Jewel is doing with "Spirit". She's focused on finding a musical antidote to anger & cynicism with this album. It doesn't mean she doesn't like these songs or anything at all regarding them. It simply means they don't fit this project. I suggest everyone at least have the patience to listen to it before passing judgement on how successfully she achieves her goals. I think you'll be most pleasantly surprised. There was such good response yesterday that Joy may consider another small run made if requests warrant it. Ok here's all the info: I know we have several Joy Eden Harrison fans here, especially after so many East Coast people caught her on the 98 Living Room Tour. For those interested in purchasing the pre-release cassette of her new album (to be released early next year & as yet still untitled), drop me an email & I'll forward you details. Joy has a limited supply of these limited edition tapes left over from the LRT & you can mail order directly from her while they last. The tapes are $12 including shipping & handling. The tapes are proffessional advance production cassettes with photographic jcards, credits, etc. For those unfamiliar with all the hoo-hah surrounding this album, its a major leap forward from her critically acclaimed first album "Angel Town" while staying true to her jazz roots. The songs are more engaging than that first album, in my opinion, & the musicians on it all put on great performances. (I absolutely love it, if you can't tell!) Cindy Lee Berryhill sat in the producers chair & arranged the incredible string parts played by Garage Orchestra cellist Renatta Bratt & a small string section. I highly recommend this album to all who have enjoyed Joy's music in the past & I know many more will become enamored with her soon. Drop me a line if interested & I'll send you the direct ordering info. PLEASE INCLUDE YOUR FULL NAME IN YOUR REPLY. I will forward all requests to Joy, who is setting a tape aside for each person interested. This way she can stop taking requests when all the tapes are spoken for. Also, please follow through quickly if you do want the tape as there is a limited quantity & someone else can enjoy it if you decide not to follow through. The official release of this album will be early next year, so get it now while you can, if interested, directly from Joy. Tracklisting & musician info follows. Of course, there's some of the usual date errors in there. ("Hands" already out to radio etc.) Mike :-) Jewel Refines Her Musical 'Spirit' BY CHUCK TAYLOR NEW YORK -- When Jewel's "Pieces Of You" was quietly released by Atlantic Records four years ago, both the label and the artist regarded it as a "little" project to support her endless stream of promotional touring. That was 10 million albums ago. And for Jewel, a seeming lifetime past. With the Nov. 17 release of her sophomore set "Spirit," the 24-year-old singer/songwriter at last has the chance to show it off the way she wants, after a string of achievements that at times made it seem like "Pieces" might just go on forever. The album spawned three tenacious hits, "Who Will Save Your Soul," "You Were Meant For Me," and "Foolish Games." By the time the latter two singles were released, Jewel was so displeased with the girlish vocals she'd first recorded that she insisted -- tearfully, it's been suggested -- on re-singing them for the radio versions. It was like that for nearly two years, as if Jewel felt she had to cover her tracks to prove that she'd grown as a musician and singer who had walked far down the road since recording "Pieces" when she was just 19. " 'Pieces Of You' I wrote accidentally. I didn't think it was anything," she says. "I wasn't comfortable with myself as a writer or as a musician. Now, after I've been out for four or five years, I've sort of mellowed out. I'm not as scared as I used to be." With her second effort, the singer/songwriter teamed with Madonna production maestro Patrick Leonard, the only one of 15 proposed producers whom Jewel green-lighted. His mission was to protect her folk/rock roots while incorporating the right blend of instrumentation to make her music more melodically ample and better suited to the demands of playing large live venues. The 13-track result is a divine marriage of smart, enterprising sounds that cradle Jewel's impressionable emotional base while broadening her modern-tinged pop savvy. Lyrically, the album demonstrates the difference between a girl and a woman. There's a unity not found on "Pieces," and while the artist remains fraught with vulnerability and sometimes dissatisfaction, this time she's not content to wallow in it. "I knew exactly what I wanted to do with this record and what I wanted it to do to people," says the artist, who is managed by Nedra Carroll (her mother). "I've felt tremendously lonely and afraid and all the things we feel, rational or irrational. There's no use for it. I wanted to write a record that was an antidote to all the things that made me worry in the world, so that it's comforting somehow." The first single, "Hands," demonstrates a will to empathize. The midtempo, piano-driven track offers a call for hope in seemingly desperate times: "If I could tell the world just one thing/It would be that we're all OK/And not to worry 'cause worry is wasteful/And useless in times like these/I won't be made useless/I won't be idle with despair/I will gather myself around my faith/For light does the darkness most fear." A video, directed by Nick Brandt, is being shot for the song Oct. 11-12 in Los Angeles. The song arrives at radio Oct. 16. There are no current plans for a commercial single. Aside from the track, Atlantic is already pointing toward several other potential singles, including "Jupiter," an organic tome to steadfast love ("You make me so crazy, baby/Could swallow the moon"); "Innocence Maintained," on protecting purity in a harsh world; and "What's Simple Is True," a beautiful back-porch yarn of true love. To up the ante, the label is blanketing the nation with Jewel, including cover stories in Rolling Stone and Vogue and appearances on "Saturday Night Live" Nov. 14, "The Rosie O'Donnell Show" Nov. 16, "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno" Nov. 19, and "Late Show With David Letterman" by early December. She'll also perform at the lighting of the Christmas tree at New York's Rockefeller Center, which NBC airs live across the country Dec. 2. In addition, her schedule includes European promotion in January, Australia and New Zealand in February, then a short U.S. tour that leads up to the release of her first film role, in the Ang Lee-directed "Absence Of Fear." Jewel plays an 18-year-old Civil War hero, very much of the earth, she says. The otherwise all-male cast includes Tobey Maguire and Skeet Ulrich. Jewel had already sidestepped music with "A Night Without Armor," a book of poetry published this past summer by HarperCollins, which rocketed to the top 10 of The New York Times nonfiction best seller list after she appeared on "The Oprah Winfrey Show." In its 15th printing, it has shipped nearly 311,000 units. "With the album, I felt that what people perceived of me was very limited," she says. "With the book, I got to talk about where I grew up and how my mind perceives things and people. " And as for living the risks of leaving the cocoon of music, she adds, "I figure if I'm not on the edge of failure, I'm not being sufficiently challenged." PLEASE, from years of experience here, I know a lot of this will simply raise more obvious questions, but rest assured, as the answers become available, I will post them. I'm simply relaying some of this info to you "way in advance", because I'm being inundated with the same questions & so you can stay on top of things accurately. Be patient & all additional info will get to you with time to spare! :-) I'll also address various specific EDA questions throughout this longwinded post, including a lot of stuff that International EDAs want to know. OK, in no logical order, here we go.... For all the Asian & Australian EDAs, you'll be happy to know the release date for Jewel's 2nd album "Spirit" is the same as everywhere. The release date is also Tuesday, November 17th. It may be in stores a day or two either way, but that is the release date WORLDWIDE. The commercial release date for the single of "Hands" has not been announced, but there will definitely be a European release & they may get a single (in stores) before the United States. I'm not sure about North America, Australia or Asian countries, but I'll keep you informed as more info becomes available. If they do release "Hands" singles in various International markets, they may have extra live cuts exclusive to the country of release. I also found out that a limited edition 2 record vinyl set of "Spirit" is planned. I do not know if it will contain anything extra & I have no other release info other than it is definitely planned. Jewel Merchandise questions.....Many have asked if a 1999 Jewel calendar will be available soon. This coming year, they've decided not to do a calendar. However, while I'm on merchandising issues, they do have a lot of great plans on that which will be revealed soon, including various things EDAs have requested over the past few years. Check the website periodically for updates on that. Also, in case you felt ho-hum about the Mugs & Jewel Journal after seeing them on the website, let me tell you I felt the same way. However, I finally saw the actual mugs & journal and they are unbelievably MUCH NICER than the website photos led me to believe. I really couldn't believe the difference! Honestly, the mugs are the best mugs we've ever had. Nice, big & very well designed. The colors are also much nicer in reality & Jewel's artwork looks real nice. What really surprised me was the journal. The website definitely doesn't do it justice! Its quite large, beautiful materials, foil embossed Jewel artwork on the cover, threaded place marker & very nicely designed. It is definitely nothing like a little spiral notepad, which is what I previously thought. So.....I don't wanna sound like Mr Marketing, but these items are way nicer than I expected & might be something many of you would enjoy more than you initially thought. I wouldn't say it if I wasn't honestly impressed & I was! So if you're stuck on holiday gift ideas for Jewel fans, check out the Jewel store at the website (http://www.jeweljk.com/). OK. Onto the big EDA issue-Touring.....Although things could definitely change on this, here's a rough (NOT set in stone!) idea of when Jewel's touring will commence. Its doubtful any fullfledged touring will happen this year. Some dates are not impossible but there are no current plans for 1998 tour dates anywhere. Jewel's next tour will likely begin sometime in February of next year. She will likely begin this with a tour of Australia (next February). They are currently discussing logistics of Jewel's next major North American Tour which will likely be next summer sometime. She may do a few US dates next April as well. May through June of 1999 is expected to be in Japan & Europe. So you International fans definitely will soon get Jewel again & so will North Americans, but perhaps not as soon as you would like. Also many of you have written asking who are the musicians playing on "Hands"?. They are: Vocals: Jewel Piano & keyboard: Patrick Leonard Drums: Brian Macleod Percussion: Luis Conte Bass: Paul Bushnell Acoustic Guitar: Jude Cole Electric Guitar: James Harrah Backing Vocals: Jewel & Lenedra Also, for those of you criticizing Patrick Leonard because of his production work with Madonna, I suggest you hold judgement until you get a chance to hear EVERYTHING on the album. He is a diverse producer who has worked with MANY people. His work with Madonna, although very successful, certainly doesn't begin to cover the guy's resume. He's also produced Robbie Robertson, who is very rootsy & totally unlike Madonna. He's also worked with Roger Waters (Pink Floyd) & I'm sure you'll agree thats totally different, too. So my point being, that expecting his production to taint Jewel's vision is completely off base. She chose him specifically because he was empathetic to her vision. So stop worrying about that. In fact "Fat Boy" has almost zero production & is very stark solo acoustic very much like her early live performances. (And Jewel DOES PLAY GUITAR on most of the album cuts. "Hands" is a rare exception.) And finally-- TV stuff. There will likely be others scheduled, but as of now, Jewel is confirmed for appearances on Saturday Night Live on Saturday, November 14th & another Tonight Show with Jay Leno on Thursday November 19th. Thats all I can think of right now. Will update you as I can. All thirteen songs on the album were written by Jewel with the exception of the first single, 'Hands,' which was co-written with producer Patrick Leonard (best known for his work with Madonna). In my new Rolling Stone (Oct. 29 issue, Wyclef Jean on cover), on page 22 there is a little aricle about a new 3-CD set that will be coming out. They call it The "Rolling Stone" Women in Rock Collection and it is supposed to include Big Mama Thornton, Etta James, Janis Joplin, Sheryl Crow, Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight, Donna Summer, and (everyone's favorite) Jewel. There is no release date mentioned and I'm sure it will just be a P.O.Y. album song on the CD, but I'm sure a lot of us will be getting it anyway. Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hi everyone. I found this article in Pop Star: The Hottest Guys In Music. (Steve and Jewel stuff starts in the end of the Liam and Noel Gallagher article) Both Gallaghers quieted down when a Jewel video came on MTV. The thought she was a "tasty bird". She's okay. But i'm more interested in the hot, shirtless guy in her video"You Were Meant For Me". That's Steve Poltz, her ex-boyfriend and the leader of the San Diego-based Rugburns. He's got his own solo album out now called One Left Shoe. And he's also the subject of many of the romantic poems in Jewel's book A Night Without Armor. The day I meet him, I noticed that the sholder- length hair I remembered so well from the video has been cut short! I'm dissapointed, but he still looks good. He is tall and slender and very boyish. Sadly, he has his shirt on through the entire interview. But a girl can dream, can't she? "We shot that video shortly after Jewel Sean Penn broke up," Steve says in an accent that screams : Surfer! Dude! Sean, who dated Jewel before he married actress Robin Wright, had directed the first video for the song. But it wasn't as good as the one featuring Steve. "It was very emotional for her, but I think she did a great job in it. She's still one of my best friends. We surf and write songs together." In fact, Steve cowrote "You Were Meant For Me" and plays guitar on her record. Lovely Jewel returned tha favor by cowrit- ing some new songs for his album and singing backup on his solo record. Written By : Henna Christian That's it. I hoped you liked it. There is also a picture of Steve from his album, One Left Shoe. The two singers have never met and only know each other's music through the dubbed CDs which I have given to them...it will be a truly amazing afternoon. Jane, as I said, is from NYC and is one of the sweetest, most down to earth people, and has one of the gentlest, most beautiful voices I have ever heard. Her 1995 album _Tapping the Wheel_ is pretty amazing, with songs of introspection, questioning, prayer, and realization...in addition to songs which show her influence from the poet Rumi. I first discovered Jane's music at the beginning of my freshman year in college...my first assignment for my school's paper was to review her album. I was excited for the assignment, but when the first second of the first song began, the assignment no longer meant anything--only her music meant something to me. I had the pleasure of meeting her just a couple months later--a truly blessed evening. This marked a pretty momentous evening for me, as it was the first time I had access of any sort to a singer who I had come to cherish and admire. Meeting Jane was a humbling experience. Hearing her perform live blew me away--the power of her voice, the energy of her sincerity, and the love she has for each note she sings or each chord she strums on her guitar is amazing. I left the concert with tears of joy and beauty flooding my eyes. Joel Cage is one of my Boston favourites. (The Boston scene is so blessed to have such great talents...many of whom will be visiting my living room...) I first heard him perform at Passim's Motown Night. I first heard his song on the "This is Boston Not Austin Vol. 2" compilation. And then I saw him again at my good friend Chris Snyder's house concert in June. Joel is one of the most passionate singers I have ever seen. When he sings, he sings purely out of his love for this gift bestowed unto him...and when he speaks, his voice is one of gentility and wonder. He is one of those people who you never get tired of speaking to or listening to...one of those people who shares so much of himself that he seems quite a miracle in our society. One of those people who you can speak to just once or twice but feel comforted in calling him a friend. His songs are pretty amazing...lyrically they are honest and blow me away. Musically, the intensity is so high and so amazing that you are captivated through and through from the first song. This guy's been around, and he'll be going around for far longer. Both Joel and Jane playing together is one of the most symbolic concerts I could ever be honoured with. Jane is the first singer I had access to...in that simple evening of meeting her and listening to her, I learned so much about the connections that can be formed when beauty is realized. Joel is the most recent of these...the newest singer to my collection of Bostonians and folk-types. So it is, for me, seeing my sense of appreciation and love of such beauty come full circle...with the first meeting the most recent for an afternoon of celebration, love, appreciation, and joy. Please come and share this special afternoon with me...and let me share this special music with *you*! RSVP, please, as soon as possible so I can get an idea of how many people to expect. There is always plenty of room for you...and I would love to welcome all of you into my home... Thank you for reading this far... all my love, Stephanie * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Stephanie Maria Kartalopoulos * The Greek Poet Chyck kartalst@hugse1.harvard.edu This is my prayer for you: May the moon protect you with honesty, caring, and gentility. The answer is yes, they will. :-) In various International markets, Jewel's new album "Spirit" will also contain a special lyric insert of the song "Hands", translated into French, Spanish, Italian and German. This will be a simple sheet of black text on white. The translations will be done by the respective labels in France, Spain, Italy and Germany. This is being done because the lyrics of that song are so powerful, that the labels want to make sure people in their markets have access to the message that these lyrics convey. Hi again, I checked on this & Kristen is correct. Borders books do have copies of this & so does Barnes & Noble now. They probably do not stock it with other music books or biographies since it doesn't fit in those categories, so ask a salesperson to assist you if needed. In the case that they don't have it in stock, either of these mega-book chains can probably order a copy for you locally. CLB's next album will be an independantly released CD recorded at the San Francisco LRT performance earlier this year. Recorded on 1/9/98, this particular show was unique among all the LRT gigs that Cindy Lee has participated in. On this particular show, she was accompanied by the extraordinary ex-Garage Orchestra cellist Renatta Bratt. It was a reunion of sorts because CLB & Renatta hadn't performed together in almost two years. I can testify there was a great spontaneous energy hapnin that night & these performances will definately delight all CLB fans. The CD will include several stripped down versions of Garage Orchestra favorites, vintage songs from her anti-folk days,as well as brand new material. And of course a healthy dose of LRT hilarity. The tracklist will be: 1. Diane 2. She Had Everything 3. Family Tree 4. Damn, I Wish I Was a Man 5. This Way Up 6. UFO Suite 7. Witness 8. I Wonder Why 9. Look at That Grin 10. Gary Handeman 11. Every SomeoneTonight The title of this CD will simply be "Living Room 16" as this was the 16th LRT gig (out of almost 50 LRT gigs featuring many other artists too) since we began all this, two summers ago. This CD will be available through direct mail order in North America & although I don't have the info yet, a European distributer will release it over there as well. The CD itself is mastered & the artwork is really all thats left to do at this point. All Cindy Lee Berryhill fans will love these performances & it'll provide many more people with a taste of the Living Room Tour. I'll keep you updated as release day approaches. It should be fairly soon. Look for it in the "gift section" of these stores (with other blank books) as apposed to with ANWA, music biographies, etc. Thanks Sabra & I hope that helps a few more of you who've been unable to find its location in the stores. For identification purposes, this is the "Jewel Edition of the Rhino Journal" made by Running Rhino & Co. And of course its always available at the Jewel Store at her website (http://www.jeweljk.com/). I hope thats helpful. This co-produced song of Jewel and Patrick Leonard is heading for a good succes in Holland. We hear the song more and more on the radio, and i will think this song will make Jewel even more populair in Holland. The Dutch Teletext is reporting the following about Spirit , Jewel's second album in Holland . The dutch relaesedate is be set for 13th of November 1998 (that's a friday). It's the succesfull followup of her first cd Pieces Of You. As we all know the cd will have 13 to 14 tracks. They are all written by Jewel with exception of the song Hands, which i love by the way tremendously. We all do, i guess and know for sure. As a remarkable fact they announce teh co-operation of Jewel and Flea , The Red Hot Chili Peper bassist. who is playing along with Jewel on the lovely track Barcelona. This is all i can report from a dutch/european point of view according to the long awaited new album of my most loved artist Jewel. So it;s definitely good news, to know that i just have 29 days to count to collect this record together with all my records i own of Jewel. greetings, michiel the dutch angel ,who rates Spirit to be more succesfull than Pieces of You of lovely Jewel. http://members.xoom.com/Jewelimpala/index.html From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Wed Oct 14 17:38:10 1998 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id RAA16155 for jewel-news-outgoing; Wed, 14 Oct 1998 17:38:08 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <199810142138.RAA16155@smoe.org> Date: Wed, 14 Oct 1998 12:35:08 -0700 From: Michael Carmona To: Jewel List Subject: Jewel-News: Jewel Compilation Video #5 is ready! Her album, "The Cauldron" is an EDA favorite & she was also featured on all 3 volumes of Future Folklore. Here's your chance to host an LRT gig with Elizabeth if you live on the West Coast of the US or Canada. For all you west coast folks that are itching for a focus for some EDA Gatherings in your area, heres a prime opportunity! Live music always makes it more fun! Dates will be available between November 15th through November 28th. If you feel confident that you can get at least 20 EDAs &/or friends to attend at your home, then you are qualified. If you'd like to volunteer as a host, please contact your LRT co-ordinator Duff (NOT ME!) at Justduff@aol.com. She will be most happy to help you & will iron out all details with perspective hosts. Do area EDAs, friends & yourself a favor & experience what so many of us already know--LRT gigs are definitely where its at! Tobey Maguire, Jewel's co-star in "Ride" (along with Skeet Ulrich and eight fellow frat-packers) tells EW Online that it must have been frightening for Jewel to be the main female on the set. "She came into a situation with 10 guys who've been acting for a while and who act for a living, and meanwhile it's her second (or third) profession," he says. "I think she was really scared, but she handled it." It's just the same lovely girl from alaska when she started her career . It's really the principle of things that's important; and when one EDA insists "You people keep missing the point" in their absolute self-importance they are not recognizing that others here have valid opinions and knowledge -- but are falsely stating that these others are wrong or are "missing the point" for not bowing to such wisdom as they hold. Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hi, You all should check out Atlantic's site, if you haven't lately. Theres some very nice black & white photography of Jewel you haven't seen before. I'm assuming some of these shots may be used in the new album graphics, but since I've not seen the final graphics yet, I really don't know. Have a look at: http://www.atlanticrecords.com I tell ya, its a weird thing reading all these fears & expectations many EDAs have about "Spirit". I'm gonna do this last ramble & then I'm gonna try to stay silent opinion wise, until release. I'm doing this because I think a lot of needless worry is going on. There's a few things I can say without any doubt in my mind. Number one is that I love the album. I also know that ANYONE who's loved Jewel's previous work, is gonna AT LEAST find parts of "Spirit" that they like even better. This is regardless of what your preferences are about production. Since there are solo acoustic tracks, even the people who love ZERO production can't complain too much. As far as lyric content goes, It hasn't really changed. She's always been writing about love, thoughtfulness & the search for inspiration & spirituality. Other than her amazing voice (which has gotten even BETTER), isn't that primarily what drew many of you (not all, of course) to her songs in the first place? I'll end my thoughts by saying there are a few things on this album that are gonna blow away EVERYONE who happens to have ears. So there! ;-) OK, back to bizness. Several have been writing me about the official website lately & even asking if BiBi is OK! YES, Bibi is just fine! She's just extremely busy working on graphics for various Jewel projects, continuing her work on video projects & of course involved in the album prep work among other things. So....the website is a bit behind. But worry not! Lots of very cool things will be happening soon at the official site too, so stick around! And while I'm on the subject, I hope Bibi's busy tonight having nothing but fun! Heres a toast to BiBi. May she have a very Happy Birthday today! I've highlighted the paragraphs which were missing from the online version, by surrounding them with '---->'. ---------------------------------------- Jewel Refines Her Musical `Spirit' International Is Key Part Of Atlantic's Plans For Follow-Up BY CHUCK TAYLOR NEW YORK -- When Jewel's "Pieces Of You" was quietly released by Atlantic Records four years ago, both the label and the artist regarded it as a "little" project to support her endless stream of promotional touring. I'm not as scared as I used to be." ----> Adds Val Azzoli, co-chairman/co-CEO of the Atlantic Group, "The first album was one of those `Let's make an album and capture the essence of Jewel.' It wasn't so much about sales." And all the while, it just kept selling. <---- With her second effort, the singer/songwriter teamed with Madonna production maestro Patrick Leonard, the only one of 15 proposed producers whom Jewel green-lighted. I wanted to write a record that was an antidote to all the things that made me worry in the world, so that it's comforting somehow." ----> Atlantic executive VP/GM Ron Shapiro says the album demonstrates monumental growth in terms of artistic achievement and Jewel's perception of where she belongs in the world. "First, her voice is a human wonder. The songwriting is provocative and inspirational, and her collaboration with Pat Leonard shows that she absolutely wants an album that is sonically sound and pleasing," he says. "The second part is that on the last record, she spoke to your heart with hints of spirituality. On this record, that comes out so much stronger. We get a sense that this is an artist who wants to use art to make the world a better place." <---- The first single, "Hands," demonstrates a will to empathize. ----> "We've been waiting for this for so long," says J.R. Ammons, music director of mainstream top 40 WSTR (Star 94) Atlanta. "I'm sure it's going to get a bunch of airplay quick. We have yet to play anything from Jewel that didn't end up being an `A' for us. This is going to be an enormous release." <---- Aside from the track, Atlantic is already pointing toward several other potential singles, including "Jupiter," an organic tome to steadfast love ("You make me so crazy, baby/Could swallow the moon"); "Innocence Maintained," on protecting purity in a harsh world; and "What's Simple Is True," a beautiful back-porch yarn of true love. ----> With saturation certain across the board at top 40, adult top 40, AC, and modern rock radio, retailers are practically dancing hand in hand over the potential of their fourth-quarter Jewel. "Obviously, her first album was terrific, and we think this will be huge, too" say Jim Litwak, executive VP of merchandising for Trans World Entertainment. "We're looking at Alanis Morissette, Celine Dion, R Kelly, Garth Brooks, and Jewel as being our top five through the year end." <---- To up the ante, the label is blanketing the nation with Jewel, including cover stories in Rolling Stone and Vogue and appearances on "Saturday Night Live" Nov. " And as for living the risks of leaving the cocoon of music, she adds, "I figure if I'm not on the edge of failure, I'm not being sufficiently challenged." ----> Not surprisingly, Atlantic was at first guarded about its artist diversifying so soon after establishing her musical base. "We were all a bit hesitant initially," says Azzoli, "but then we decided we've broken the rules all along with Jewel, and she seems to have an innate ability to know what her fans want. "Kids are much more open to multitalented artists nowadays," he adds. "It made her more accessible, more worldly, and probably a better songwriter." Being more worldly is also a priority for the Atlantic camp with "Spirit." While Jewel sold 1.5 million copies of "Pieces Of You" outside of the U.S., gaining ground in Australia, Canada, Japan, and pockets of Europe, she hasn't become a global presence a la Morissette or Dion. "It's a major priority," Shapiro says. "The feedback on the single `Hands' from every territory and affiliate has been extraordinary. This is the one that's going to do it." There's also talk of a worldwide tour beginning in mid-1999, which would be handled by Rick Roskin at Creative Artists Agency. For his part, Azzoli sees an uncomplicated mission in the months ahead. "My hopes are that this album establishes Jewel as truly one of the great artists of our time. I want her to get the recognition that she so justifiably deserves." <---- ------------------------- Also in this edition of Billboard in the 'Hot 100 Singles Spotlight' on page 103 was the following... ------------------------ JEWEL LEAKS: It's hard to believe that more than a year has passed since "Foolish Games," Jewel's last single, was released to radio, especially since the song is still getting airplay to the tune of 8.2 million audience impressions. Her latest effort "Hands," wasn't supposed to hit the airwaves until Oct. 19, but KHKS Dallas somehow got a copy of the song early, started playing it, and shared the song with other stations owned by Chancellor Media Group. Airplay then spread like wildfire to 118 Hot 100-monitored stations. "Hands" has received enough early airplay to land at No.67 on Hot 100 Airplay with 13.4 million audience impressions. Among the stations that have "Hands" in significant rotation are KYSR and KIIS Los Angeles, KRBE Houston, KDWB Minneapolis, KKRZ Portland, Ore., and WFLZ Tampa, Fla. In response to the leak, Atlantic serviced the song to stations digitally via DG systems and rush-released CDs Oct. 7. ------------------------ Chris Jewel, Pieces Of UK - http://easyweb.easynet.co.uk/~cmgroves/Jewel From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Mon Oct 19 10:21:38 1998 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id KAA10809 for jewel-news-outgoing; Mon, 19 Oct 1998 10:21:36 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <199810191421.KAA10809@smoe.org> Date: Sun, 18 Oct 1998 23:37:54 EDT From: ABershaw@aol.com To: jewel-news@smoe.org Subject: Jewel-News: MrBB-European Update & TV mystery in Holland solved (I think) Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hi all, but especially our European friends, Here's a bunch of NEW info for you. First, I think I can now clear up the confusion over this: In a message dated 10/17/98 5:33:56 PM, michielvangorkum@wxs.nl wrote: >..tonight a girl performed a Jewel song on 'The Soundmix Show' where young >talents can sing their favorite song of their artist. >The presenter Henny Huisman told us that the next concert of Jewel >will be in Muziekcentrum Vredenburg in Ultrecht Holland and that >Jewel invited the Jewel imitator/performer of Foolish Games. So Alan, is >there something of news in your surroundings who can confirm this news ? >So do you happen to know any date, the presenter didn't told the public? I'm almost positive that all of you who saw this show were watching a repeat broadcast from LAST YEAR. Jewel was scheduled to play in Ultrecht last year & this is what the announcer gave away tickets to. I know nothing about this TV program but I do know that Jewel is definately not scheduled to play any concert in Holland for the remainder of 1998. She will be there in 1999 sometime. However, Jewel will be doing some European promotional work very soon! She will appear on several European TV shows toward the end of this month. The only ones I currently know about right now are these: In the UK, look for Jewel on the "This Morning" program on Thursday morning, October 29th. Jewel will also be doing several TV shows in Madrid, Spain on October 26th & 27th, but I don't know the name of the programs. (If you live in Spain, please contact me privately & post to the list anything you discover about this.) More European TV will be happening, but many things get scheduled last minute, so please post when you see other listings. I'll try to keep you updated, but its very difficult, because I'm extremely busy the next few weeks. So International EDAs will need to help each other on these things. The above things are all I currently know about in Europe. There are no public concerts planned on this promotional swing through Europe. Its strictly TV & radio, etc. I also realize MANY American EDAs are concerned about all the upcoming US TV. I have not posted any more dates (other than SNL) because many of those other shows (Rosie, Letterman, Tonight, etc) are not 100% confirmed. I'm sure you've all seen various dates posted in various places & this is leading to confusion (& way too many emails to me.....). DON'T WORRY. I will post ALL of those EXACT show dates when they are confirmed. Its senseless to post "speculative" dates. Rest assurred, the accurate dates will be posted in plenty of time to watch & set those VCRs. Many of them have had doubts about their talents, fears of performing and problems with repression and addiction, yet at some point they decided to stake it all on their passion for music. For example, Cash and Sarah McLachlan describe the struggle to go beyond previous achievements and delve deeper into their own experiences for new material. Ani DiFranco and Cassandra Wilson talk about the strength required to break through sexual and racial stereotypes, while Jonatha Brooke and Lucinda Williams discuss their commitment to more literary lyrics, even when that has limited their commercial success. Other topics discussed include religion, society's expectations of women (obsessions with body weight and trying to be the good daughter come up frequently) and the need for solitude in order to write, even when that means feeling lonely and isolated. These women's candid views shed light on issues confronting artists of every sort and will encourage any one who has been discouraged along the way. 170 original b&w photos by Emma Dodge Hanson. Review and Commentary from Publisher's Weekly: Narrator Jake Roedel is in his mid-teens when he joins the First Kansas Irregulars in 1861. During the next few years he sees, and commits, more than his share of Civil War atrocities. Most of the action takes place in Kansas and Missouri between the rebel Irregulars (bushwhackers) and the Union Jayhawkers, with some civilians caught in the crossfire. The studiedly cool Jake experiences loss (the deaths of his best friend, father and comrades) and love (the best friend's ``widow''); he also learns about tolerance from his contact with a nobly reserved black Irregular. There's plenty of hard riding, drinking and shooting, most of it leading to bloodshed. Jake's loyalty to the ``secesh'' cause is unquestioning and doesn't quite gibe with his growing unease amid the gore, or with his departure in the midst of the war for Texas with wife and child. The prose is occasionally rather pretentious, but this is a generally enjoyable coming-of-age novel by the author of Under the Bright Lights. It'll be interesting to see how high it goes....I think it'll certainly hit Top10, but I've got no idea if it can do Top 5. Casey's Top 40 can be seen online at http://charter.simplenet.com/kclatest.htm Conversely, "Hands" has yet to his the other major national radio show countdown Top 40, Rick Dee's Top 40. (It'll be there next week, I'm sure :-) Ricks' Top 40 can be found at http://www.rick.com As for Billboards "Hot 100" singles....the online version only shows the top 50 positions, and "Hands" hasn't hit that chart yet. The Billboard Hot 100 can be found at http://www.billboard.com/charts/hot100.html To follow the progress of "Hands" on these and other charts, and "Spirit" once it's released, go to Adam Longfellows' amazing and award winning "Pieces Of Jewel" site and head to the "News" page. Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk This is from the latest issue (October 24, 1998) of Billboard (the US music trade newspaper). ----------------------------- JEWEL Hands (3:47) PRODUCER: Patrick Leonard WRITERS: Jewel, P. Leonard PUBLISHERS: WB/Wiggly Tooth, ASCAP Atlantic 8703 (CD Promo) The question here is not whether Jewel's sophomore endeavor is worthy of her previous efforts, but rather how many weeks it will take the folk popster to reach No. 1. Cast aside any preconceptions; it's time to embrace one hell of a new single. Since she's been away, Jewel's vocals have become less affected and less girlish; they're at once creamier and more robust. Protective of her all-important folk roots, this piano-driven number coaxes the world to hold onto faith: "In the end, only kindness matters." The indispensable production chops of Patrick Leonard, a longtime right hand for Madonna, add a smart, edgy backdrop that is finely suited to this midtempo swayer. This will be saturating the airwaves at top 40, hot AC, AC, and adult top 40, and "Hands" could reignite the artist's presence on modern rock, too. >From the stunning "Spirit," due Nov. 17. ------------------------------ Also in this issue, Hands is at number 22 on the Adult Top 40 airplay chart and at number 30 on the Hot 100 Airplay chart. Unfortunately there's no sign of Hands in the UK airplay charts. Barring any unforeseen delays, it is supposed to begin airing on both VH1 & MTV the day after tomorrow, Wednesday, October 28th. I don't know the exact "World Premiere" time. I'm sure it'll be in heavy rotation in no time so it'll soon be easy to catch it. Maybe one of you can check MTV/VH1 schedules & see if theres shows on Wednesday most likely to feature a new video. I don't watch much TV so I'm not knowledgable about that. If you are, fill us in. ...And related news of possible interest-- "Hands"is already in the Top Ten (radio play) & is the fastest climbing song in the country (USA) right now. Since we met on the list, I thought it might be of interest to all of you. Tom & I originally met at JewelStock, when I ran up to him yelling "Elmo ! I love Elmo!" and he gave a me a weird look. We met up again at other events, including the Party Van to LizStock. However, we didn't become interested in each other until June 1997, at ChelsStock. So, we've been together now for almost a year and a half. Last night we went to a Moxy Fruvous show in Northampton. When Moxy came out, they began telling a story about BJ (a lonely character in one of their songs) and his quest for his long lost love, Rachel. By the end of the first act, BJ was on the moon, happy with a Russian dog and no longer looking for Rachel. About 1/2way into their second set, they started saying things like "We didn't tell the whole story. Don't you want to know what happened with Rachel?" They asked if there were any Rachel's in the audience, then if there were any in the balcony. They brought us up on stage and asked if we had boyfriends. The other girl said no, and I said yes. They asked what his name was, then brought him up on stage. They then told me they knew I had a boyfriend named Tom and that he asked them to ask me something. Then Tom got down on his knee, and pulled out a ring box, and the band sang "Will you marry me?" and put a microphone in my face :). I said "yeah" (very eloquent). They then asked us to stay on stage, and they sang our song (which is a rare song they almost never play in public). They congratulated us and we left the stage. It was a beautiful night, and a gorgeous ring :). Turns out Tom had been talking with the band and planning it all out since July ! My family, his family, a lot of people at the concert-everyone knew, and they still managed to keep it a secret. So, I'm not sure if we're the first EDA couple that met through the list to get engaged, but we must be close :). I thought everyone should know !
