Bad songs, that is. I mean, really bad songs. Songs so excruciating, the title alone brings on convulsions. Let's try an experiment: "Mandy,'' "Wildfire,'' "Endless Love,'' "Reunited,'' "If I Were a Carpenter.'' Any palpitations yet? Cold sweat? Hives? OK, let's ratchet it up a notch: "I Honestly Love You,'' "We Are the World,'' "All By Myself,'' "Torn Between Two Lovers,'' "Feelings.'' Hurts, huh? At least one of those songs will stick to you like fungus. Already, folks around the Bay Area are firing up their word processors, preparing to write letters of the "But-I-love-that-song!'' variety. Of course, you do. That's what makes them so insidious: They get to you despite their sheer vapidity. Everyone's been manipulated by a wretched pop song. I've wept along with a few of them myself, especially during one stormy high-school romance. Never mind which songs. (OK, OK: "All Out of Love,'' "Still'' and "Endless Love.'' Satisfied?) Transcendental awfulness In any case, this is not an attack on bad songs, but rather a celebration of those that achieve transcendental awfulness. But there's nothing being concocted today that comes close to the songs listed above. Don't start in with Hanson or the Spice Girls. Bubble-gum pop and novelty songs don't count. They may be annoying in the short run, but they're like hitting your thumb with a hammer: a sudden sharp pain that fades fast. Two of the most reviled songs of the last few years -- "Macarena'' and "Barbie Girl'' -- flamed out quickly. (Granted, a Mattel lawsuit helped show "Barbie'' the door.) "It's when you've got somebody writing something like 'Copacabana' and they really want to touch someone, that's when it comes off as pathetic,'' points out Jim (``The Big Cheese'') Monack of the Cheeseballs, a Bay Area band that re-creates the cheesiest tunes of the '70s and '80s. People won't be dancing to novelty or bubble-gum songs at their weddings 10 years from now. They probably won't even have to endure the Living Strings version when they're shopping for pasta sauce. It's the Serious songs that have a lethal half-life. Even "Copa'' doesn't quite cut it by that criterion. Too razzmatazz. A good bad song needs syrup. As in "All By Myself.'' Or "You Don't Bring Me Flowers.'' Or "Sometimes When We Touch.'' A maudlin story helps, too, as in "Ruby, Don't Take Your Love to Town.'' A vet in a wheelchair. A cheatin' woman. Homicidal jealous rage. Great stuff. Love songs lend themselves to tripe and treacle, but there are lots of other nifty bad-pop sub-genres. There's the strident message song, for instance: "One Tin Soldier (The Legend of Billy Jack)'' "Abraham, Martin and John'' "In the Year 2525'' The '70s soared By the way, guess what the subtitle of that last one was? "Exactitude & Terminus.'' Perfect or what? The Golden Age of bad songs was, of course, the '70s. Need proof? In 1977, "You Light Up My Life'' clung to No. 1 for 10 weeks. That makes it one of the most successful singles ever. The '70s decade was also marked by the story song, from "Delta Dawn'' to "Billy, Don't Be a Hero'' to "Taxi.'" (You know: ``Harry. Keep the change.'') Not to mention "Ode to Billy Joe.'' And the greatest of them all: "Daddy Don't You Walk So Fast.'' Lionel Richie did his best, but over-the-top wretchedness was harder to come by in the '80s. We had entered a more cynical, ironic age, and maudlin songs were on the way out. And forget the '90s so far. The grunge revolution made musicians too depressed even to fall in love, let alone write bad songs about it. But now we've entered cheerier, changeable times. The economy is good and all that, and people are ready for vapidity once more. There must be someone out there up to the challenge. Maybe a guide to the essence of bad songs would help. There seem to be five qualities all truly horrible pop songs share: 1. Mawkishness 2. Grating vocals 3. A catchy but lousy melody 4. Trite and/or tasteless lyrics 5. A vague air of creepiness Mawkishness we've already examined. Horrid melodies are beyond words. As for grating vocals, think Joe Cocker sounding like he's having a nervous breakdown at the end of "You Are So Beautiful.'' Whitney Houston, Celine Dion and Michael Bolton try, but their oral loop-de-loops just can't compare. Vague creepiness? How about Michael Jackson's love song to man-eating rats ("Ben'')? Or Bread's "If,'' which concludes with the Earth coming to a halt and the lovers being flung into space. Or all those death songs. Actually, they're usually dying songs, which is even creepier: the dying lover song ("Last Kiss''), the dying family song ("Alone Again (Naturally)''), the dying singer song ("Seasons in the Sun''). Notice the music to these songs is often upbeat. Or how about "Touch Me in the Morning.'' The title alone is enough to give you the willies. Which brings us to lyrics. Some of the best bad songs have lyrics that sound good until you give them any thought at all. "Three Times a Lady.'' What does that mean? Is that like an amplifier that goes to 11? "Baby Come Back,'' pleaded the short-lived Player in '78. ``There was something in everything about you.'' Huh? "I'm All Out of Love,'' another distraught lover sang. No he's not. He's madly in love. The opening of that song is a classic, even by the standards of Air Supply: ``I'm lying alone/with my head on the phone/thinking of you till it hurts.'' Maybe he'd feel better if he took his head off the phone. So, applying the five rules, what's the worst song of all time? It's gotta be "(You're) Having My Baby.'' It's got it all. The melody is insipid and unforgettable. It oozes maudlin adoration. The singing is downright smug. And the lyrics. Tasteless, sexist, repulsive and creepy: a) She's not having her baby or our baby. She's having my baby. b) The singer gushes over his woman's ballooning belly. c) He reminds her that ``you could have swept it from your life/but you wouldn't do it.'' Bringing up abortion in a love song. Wow. This is a masterpiece. The song was written by Paul Anka, who's also responsible for Sinatra's "My Way'' and Tom Jones' "She's a Lady.'' Anka plays Reno on Friday and Saturday. Tickets may still be available. Can "Baby'' ever be topped? Unlikely. But there is one hope left for the younger generation. Her name is Jewel. So far, most folks have just heard her bouncy little pop numbers. But she's got two songs on her debut with real potential. The first is the title tune, ``Pieces of You.'' It's a message song about intolerance of all kinds. The victims include gays and a ``fat boy.'' The chorus finds her crooning out the insults people hurl at them. When Jewel sang this at Lilith Fair last year, her own fans laughed. The other is "Adrian,'' about a boy who has "an unfortunate accident in a canoe'' that leaves him in a vegetative state. Jewel gets weepy and petulant as she urges him to wake up. I can't wait for her second album. End of article A couple comments from me: I can't wait til he hears Fragile Flame (Fat Boy goes to the pool...) I have heard fans laugh at PoY. I find it a little silly sometimes too. Heck, I may have even met this guy at a show and been one of the ones laughing. The "trendy" topic is singers who act in movies. The article reads: Screen Debut: She'll play a girl who captures the hearts of two men in Universal's Civil War drama _Ride With the Devil_ (due in April). How she got the part: She was pitched by a CAA. "I read cold, and it went terribly," she says of her audition. Director Ang Lee hired her anyway. Why acting?: Maybe she was meant for this, too. And the ANWA mention: It's currently #10 on the charts, a two place drop from last week. :( Is it just me, or is Jewel always in Entertainment Weekly? That's two years in a row- on the same album! =) pretty cool. She was also voted for "who you pretend to be when you sing into your hairbrush." There's a small cute pic of her at the bottom. =) Also, I wanted to say that I was looking at the "Making Faces" book again (this time at the Virgin Megastore) with the *Beautiful* picture of Jewel in it... and next to the book I saw the calendar of it. Jewel is featured in May. It's a '97 calendar, but they're still selling it. The book was always too expensive for me, but the calendar is a little cheaper, and I thought people might like to know that. It is a Gorgeous pic you can't find anywhere else. And while I was there, I checked out the new book "Women Solo Artists in Their Own Words" (or something like that, sorry) and I recommend to anyone to at least read the Jewel chapter. It's very nice. =) Ok, don't forget to watch Steve Poltz' VH1 special tomorrow at 11 p.m. EST. =) Peace, Priscilla. I've seen these ladies play before, and they should deliver a kick*ss show. I expect the usual heavy turnout of EDAs as well, from as far away as Kansas, Ohio and California. Water guns will be checked at the door (NOT). I also seem to have a cache of surplus laser tag weapons in the closet... hmmm. Everyone is welcome, so skip the conventional family Labor Day weekend party and come to the UNconventional Harris LRT! I'll be in and out between now and Sunday, but I'll check email through Friday afternoon and early Sunday if anyone needs details (like how to find the show). Include your phone number so I can call you back in time. Jewel - Pieces Of You (Atlantic, 1994) If there's anything more tiresome than adolescent angst, it's beauiful people wittering on about how difficult life is. Angsty, adolescent Swiss-American beauty Jewel Kilcher went against type, turned in a lengthy album of rare depth and made herself a coffee bar superstar in the process. Her intriguing ennui is that of a middle-aged divorcee : it's everyone's fault but hers. It's her father's fault she wants to rip his throat out; her ex-lover's fault she's off to the cinema alone etc etc. Cumulatively, the effect is akin to being bashed around the temples with an Erica Jong novel. Big thanks to all you weary long distance travelers! What a lucky guy I am! Amyjo, Joy, Lisa, Duff & Liz as my roomates all weekend. Does it get any better than that?!! The Cape Cod LRT was like Summer Camp for ages 5 to 75 (but with no pesky counselors tellin you what to do, yeeha!...) I can't begin to tell you how great the performances were. We had many surprise performers & I think everyone discovered something new to love. ( Hi Liz! ;-) I sure look forward to reading others perceptions of these unbelievably great LRT gigs. OK, onto Jewel content-- I recieved a few questions tonight regarding the new Jewel song shown on that 17 Mag special & someone forwarded me another "new song" related question posted during my absence. So here's those answers: In a message dated 8/30/98 9:17:48 PM, Jennifer Anderson wrote: >....."winter song"..... i was re-watching that rolling stone special last night, and >i REALLY love that song. since it's sort of "winter inspired," think it >might be on the new album?? Many of you will be happy to know that, YES, this is definately on the new album. However, it has undergone a title change & I'm fairly certain it is now officially titled "The More I Live". Speculation on my part, but this studio version could be a likely choice for initial radio airplay & single. I also already recieved several questions about "Kiss The Flame" which was partially shown on tonights 17 Magazine Special. Yes this too will likely be on the album & is quite the beautiful new song. A few also asked me if Jewel has ever performed "Kiss The Flame" live. Jewel has only performed this song live twice. (For you hardcore tapers, it was last October 26th at Muffathalle in Munich, Germany & once again on November 9th at The Paradiso in Amsterdam, Netherlands during her last European Tour.) Basically, I'm just saying hi tonight & I'll fill you in on more soon. Hope all has been well the past few weeks. He also plays regularly with smaller ensembles & duos. His music features many fascinating instruments & sounds. Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-transfer-encoding: 7bit X-Mailer: AOL 3.0 for Mac sub 84 Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hello all, Something I've wanted to do for a long time is to figure out a way to better educate new EDAs, so that they can understand what makes these Jewel mailing lists (& The EDAs) unique amongst the countless other mailing lists out there. An incredible amount of history has gone down since a few guys from San Diego started an Ecto-list discussion about an unsigned singer songwriter named Jewel Kilcher back in 1994. What I've written up certainly only skims the surface but I know it will help many of you who have joined us in the last year or more. Please take a few minutes & read this. I've also included what I consider to be the most important (& informative) websites afterwards. Every EDA should be familiar with these sites if you really want to be a part of it all. I guarantee you that if you read this & check out the sites that follow, you will quickly be as educated as the most seasoned veteran listmembers. And you'll likely have a lot of fun in the process! I must aknowledge the fact that I'm going on my own memories as well as research on the following piece, so others can certainly elaborate on almost everything I'm saying. Theres countless things I've ommitted, but I think its a relatively decent overview. I also admit that I've blatantly stole a significant line or two from "EDA quotes" that have impressed me over the years. I hope this helps many of you & makes these lists an even more enjoyable place for all of us. Enjoy! MrBB ************************************************* Understanding The EDAs/Jewel History (aka "I just subscribed to these Jewel lists, & damn, am I confused!) In early 1994, a small Internet discussion group called "Ecto" featured discussion about the music of Bearsville, NY artist Happy Rhodes(& still does). In addition to this common interest, Ecto members also enjoy educating one another about female musicians that might also be of interest to each other. Several of these subscribers were from San Diego & began a discussion about a local coffehouse singer songwriter named Jewel Kilcher. These same fans circulated to each other several audience recorded cassettes of Jewel's Innerchange performances which increased interest in the young unsigned artist. As Ecto interest grew & Jewel's debut album "Pieces Of You" was released, an offshoot discussion group began which focused primarily on Jewel's work & live performances. The Jewel mailing list/discussion group began officially on Sunday, February 19th, 1995. Like thousands of other Internet discussion groups dedicated to a musician or band, these several friends continued discussing thier common fascination with Jewel's lyric content, music & vocal talent. They also traded live recordings amongst themselves. This gave them a far wider perspective on Jewel's prolific output than the average Jewel fan only familiar with her debut album. Through thier efforts, many more North Americans became interested in Jewel & began an organized effort to promote her small residency tours & began calling radio stations in support of her new album. Interest continued to grow & a handful of websites were created to educate new Jewel fans over the course of the next year or so. Jewel appreciated this particular group of people very much & deemed them her "EveryDay Angels"(aka EDAs). Jewel's management also occasionally monitored the discussion & provided an information flow that helped keep these internet fans informed of Jewel's projects & tour dates, often long before the media cared to notice. Over the course of the following year, many of these Internet fans would meet at Jewel's performances & strong friendships beyond the daily email discussion began. The EDA numbers continued to grow through 1995 & early 1996, but unlike other large Internet groups, (& thanks to the efforts of veteran members,) this discussion group continued to be one of the most intelligent, inspired & friendly places anywhere on the Internet. In mid 1996, a young woman from Lawrence Kansas (Duff Martin) suggested how enjoyable it would be if Jewel were to perform a concert exclusively for this discussion group. Timing was right. Jewel & her management agreed that this would be a fun idea. The subscribers were informed that Jewel would enjoy doing this provided the fans join her in Bearsville NY (where she'd soon be recording) & organize all the details themselves. After much online organizational effort, a free private show was planned for July 18th, 1996 at The Bearsville Theater in Woodstock, NY where Jewel had been rehearsing & conducting band auditions during the month. A second benefit show was also planned for the following night with all proceeds going to help the struggling Bearsville Theater. (Note from MrBB: Your list manager, Mike Connell & fellow listmember Akira aka Richard Chang, were primarily responsible for organizing this, in case you didn't know.) Hundreds of EDAs from all over North America converged in Bearsville & spent three days camping together & experiencing two of the most diverse & engaging performances of Jewel's career. Most importantly, meeting each other for the first time, a bonding occurred amongst all attendees. This event was named "Jewelstock" & the fans created t-shirts, buttons & came bearing gifts of tapes, food & good cheer for thier new friends. This event would soon become legendary & the posted amazement of all the attendees (& the authorized free recordings distributed to all EDAs soon after) allowed many more to experience Jewelstock vicariously. Everyone who attended, left Bearsville significantly changed by the experience of Jewel's kindness as well as by the bonding experience that occurred during the three days & nights spent enjoying each other's company in person. Subscribers to the EDA discussion group were no longer "email adresses" & became real people for the first time in each others perspective. That such a diverse group of people could come together & create something so great, all of them motivated by love & a desire to share, without any monetary pressures or incentives, speaks volumes about what the EDAs are all about. The dynamics of the discussion group were forever changed by this experience. Unlike most Internet discussion groups a true "family" & "caring" atmosphere was born. Jewelstock had a profound effect on all subscribers. The EDAs began taking Jewel's lyrical messages to heart & manifesting them in projects that helped to support each other as well as to promote volunteer work helping to improve thier own individual communities. The EDAs have done some amazing things over the years, many of which have been selfless acts of kindness that have had dramatic impacts on both the recipients of these acts as well as for the EDAs that have participated. A wonderful example of this occured in conjunction with Jewel's 23rd birthday. Rather than give gifts to Jewel, the EDAs encouraged each other to find a way to effect positive change in the world. In doing so, they demonstrated that Jewel's humanitarian messages were understood. In April of 1997, the entire EDA list organized to help a severely injured "hit & run" victim named James P Kalanick, who had no medical insurance. James was in need of a van outfitted with special lift equipment so that he could be mobile, return to work & resume a more enjoyable life. The EDAs were incredible & raised quite a lot of money which was donated to the JPK Fund & helped James accomplish these goals. But beyond that , EDAs spent time with James, gave him favorite tapes, brought him to area shows & took all this to one more important level--friendship. This was a wonderful experience for all involved & demonstrated that the EDAs were taking Jewel's messages to heart & "finding where positive change can be made" & manifesting these ideas into reality. With the EDA numbers rapidly growing to the thousands, several members began organizing a non-profit foundation (EveryDay Angels Foundation aka EDAF) which promoted continued community volunteer work. Many other projects including blood drives, clothing drives, food bank work, childrens hospitals' & battered woman shelters' volunteer work have taken place, amongst other worthy endeavors. Along with these various projects, organizing "EDA Gatherings" nationwide became a major focus, thus spreading the original "Jewelstock" experience to many others. A major offshoot facet of these gatherings is known as "The Living Room Tour"(aka LRT). The LRT is a "virtual continuous tour" that encompasses many artists selected by EDAs as apposed to the standard touring concepts known in the entertainment industry. It's an ongoing project where EDAs book shows (& entire tours) by artists of interest directly into fans homes (or yards). The idea is to eliminate management, promoters, agents, etc., & book shows directly into fans homes & promote the performances cost free via email directly to those interested. This intimate approach has dramatically changed the dynamics between the performers & audience members who've paricipated. The musicians who've participated revel in the fact that everyone is there to really listen & the EDA audiences experience a "one on one" closeness not experienced in a "traditional setting" type performance. This has been enormously successful & has changed & improved the perspective of all artists & fans who've participated. The LRT phenomenon continues to positively change the lives of both musicians & fans. EDAs travel far & wide to attend these very special events. As of this writing, Jewel's Internet fans worldwide are continuing to effect positive change in the world & strive to support & help each other through their caring & sharing ways. Turned out that a pair of albums she made for Rhino 10 years ago got discovered by some rabid Jewel fans, who heard a bit of similarity in their approaches (on those albums, Berryhill could have been Jewel's older, more cynical and bohemian sister). Berryhill linked up with the Everyday Angels, an Internet cadre of Jewel fans, who sponsored a tour of informal living-room shows. She wound up playing three gigs in people's houses -- one in Boston, one in Taunton, and one in Brewster on the Cape. "The last one was like a mini Woodstock," she says from her San Diego home. "We got a hundred people and had to move it onto the porch; people brought their chairs and sprawled out on the lawn. Then they'd go in the water, come back, and we'd play some more. There was so much scuttlebutt on the Net about how successful the first show was that we got treated like queens." She did similar shows in the Midwest, encouraging fans to make DAT and video recordings, which are now being swapped around the Net. And the irony of getting embraced by fans of a next-generation songwriter? "Pretty funny. Guess I just wasn't made for these times." The Brian Wilson line she's just quoted suggests where Berryhill's heading these days: beginning with the Garage Orchestra album (released three years ago on Cargo), she's gone for a textured pop sound that brings out the songwriting quirks that were hinted at on her acoustic albums. "The things I'm writing now have even more harmonies. I discovered this revolutionary new instrument to write on; it's called the piano." After a show at Johnny D's last week, she'll be back at Green Street Grill on the 20th, a week from Sunday. Mike :-) **** A Rare Jewel Of A Poetic Parody **** Imitation isn't always flattery. Sometimes it's mockery. Chinese-American writer Beau Sia, 22, has penned a sly page-by-page response to folk-pop singer Jewel's best seller, a night without armor. He wrote the sendup, a night without armor II: the revenge (Mouth Almighty Books, $10), just after graduating from New York University's film school in June. Hers is flowery and sensitive. His is wry and absurd. "I think Beau did it out of boredom," says Mouth chief Bill Adler. "He saw the book in our office, took it home and rewrote all her poetry to amuse himself." Impressed, Adler offered to publish it as the first title from Mouth's book imprint. Revenge, in stores now, coincides with the debut of Sia's hip-hop/comedy CD, Attack Attack Go! On her book cover, Jewel writes: "We talk slowly, about nothing, about movies, we stick to surface streets and find no meaning in cafe windows. I used to unwrap you! Tender layers unfolding." Sia scribbles on his: "I don't care what you think about the way I write. I die on the page every time. What do you know about push-ups? True love? Pressure? I am the product." Appropriating all 109 of her titles, he wrote new poems in four hours. Why bother? "I was just fascinated by Jewel, because rarely do young people get poetry books published," says Sia, the author of six unpublished poetry volumes. On a scale of 1 to 10, he ranks Jewel's works between 5 and 6. "But who am I to tell a millionaire how to write?" Sia initially resisted Adler's proposal to publish revenge. "It's so silly," he says, "and I worried that people would consider me a prankster riding on Jewel's success rather than a credible writer." Recording wrapped up about two weeks ago & they are doing final touches & mixes as I write this. The recording sessions, with Patrick Leonard in the production chair, went really well. (The studio was located on a large ranch & Jewel was able to take her horse along for horseback riding diversions between sessions.) As you already know, the North American release date is scheduled for Tuesday, November 17th, 1998. Everything is still on target for that release date to be met. The title of Jewel's new album is "SPIRIT". Proceeding the release of her new album "SPIRIT", will be the first single titled "Hands". This single is scheduled to hit the radio stations on October 19th. (Extra cuts/remixes on the single have not yet been determined.) In the next few weeks, Jewel will also shoot a promo video for "Hands" & that should hit MTV & VH1 by late October or early November to coincide with the album release. I realize none of you have ever heard this song since its never been performed live, but I can tell you that "Hands" is really beautiful (& one of the most spiritual songs she's ever written). Some of you noticed that an AOL profile was recently added to Jewel's [JewelJK@aol.com] website email address & it has the quote "In the end, only kindness matters". This quote is a line from "Hands". The finalized tracklist has not yet been determined, but should be confirmed in the next week or so. As usual, Jewel recorded more songs than can possibly fit on the album. The tentative tracklist (still subject to change, of course!) for "SPIRIT" includes the following songs: 1. "Nothing Without Love" -this is a shorter sparsely orchestrated slow acoustic version of "Deep Water" which may or may not be included. 2. "Barcelona" - this is an awesome new one written during last years European tour. EDAs were treated to an earlier version of this at the Java Joe's EDA Thanksgiving Concert last year. This is with full band & has that ominous haunting quality of "Last Dance Rodeo". Its one of those songs where she begins singing in her lowest register & then lets her voice soar on the "Let me fly" chorus. 3."Down So Long"-aka "Been Down So Long". This is an old Innerchange era song resurrected with full band arrangement. This was played almost every gig last year on her "Papillon" Tour. 4. "What's Simple Is True" -aka "Winter Song". Beautiful song, touching lyrics & a sparse arrangement (that has hints of a Rickie Lee Jones "Ghostyhead" album influence, in my opinion.) 5. "Jupiter"- my personal favorite at the moment. Very different approach for Jewel. GREAT lyrics!! Another new one with band. 6. "Songs Of Freedom"- another new one. Partially inspired by a tape I gave Jewel that included Bob Marley's "Redemption Song". (Yo Pete! I know you are doing backflips over this concept!) 7. "Kiss The Flame"- another new one written during last years European tour. One of her most poetic lyrics & very pretty. You may have heard the clip of Jewel playing this on the recent 17 Magazine TV special. 8. "Fat Boy"-aka "Fragile Flame". Solo acoustic version. 9."Stranger(Enter From The East)"- absolutely gorgeous! 10."Innocence Maintained"- full band arrangement(I hear those EDA"Yeeha!'s) 11."Do You?"-another new one with band, written during the movie. 12."Hands" - the first single & video(see above), with band 13."Deep Water"- I know almost everyone wanted this! :-) It's a full band version & a bit different arrangement than live versions. 14. "Absence Of Fear"- stark band arrangement, beautiful vocal, need I say more? That's likely what will be on the new album & the current assembly of song order. As you know from Jewel's website & previous posts, quite a few other songs were also recorded & may or may not wind up on singles as extra cuts, and are not scheduled for the album. Well, that brings you totally up to date. There's a lot to look forward to & I'm quite sure everyone here will find something new to love on this album as well as a few of your "wish-list" songs. The new ones are quite amazing & there's a lot of lyric content that I'm sure will inspire you personally (as well as inspire posts galore upon release!!). Have a wonderful day! (predicting the ol' sophomore jinx for both) Of course they had to do this without hearing a note from her CD, but they make a good point in my opinion, as what they say commonly happens with second CDs from artists with breakthrough first CDs. (kinda makes me wish knockout versions of Carnivore and Satellite were on the CD :-) Mike :-) http://cgi.pathfinder.com/ew/features/980925/fallmusicprev/morijewel.html Morissette & Jewel Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie With Wall Street going bonkers, here's a prediction you can bank on. In November, two pop stars will sell heaps of albums. And days later, the press will accuse them of failure. The stars are Alanis Morissette and Jewel, and their only commercial mistake is success-too much of it. Morissette's Jagged Little Pill and Jewel's Pieces of You shook the record biz by moving 16 million and 8 million copies, respectively. But as Boston, M.C. Hammer, and Hootie & the Blowfish once learned, a record-breaking debut can create impossibly high expectations for that sophomore album. "What if Alanis Morissette and Jewel come out and sell 150,000 the first week?" offers Val Azzoli, cochairman and CEO of the Atlantic Group, Jewel's label. "What happens if Alanis Morissette sells 300,000? I mean, that's fantastic! But people are gonna say, 'I don't know, that's a long way to 15 million.'" There's a catch-22 to market domination. "If Alanis makes her debut album, part two, and Jewel makes her debut album, part two, they're going to catch s--- for making the same album twice," explains RCA exec Bruce Flohr. "But if they take musical chances, people say, ŒWell, it's not as good as the last one.'" So what do the new discs sound like? Handlers are reluctant to reveal much beyond the barest facts. "The album is called Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie," says Morissette's independent publicist. "Here are some song titles: 'Front Row.' 'Baba.' 'Thank U'-and that¹s with the letter U." Gee, thanks. (This we do know: It comes out Nov. 3. Glen Ballard, who concocted much of Jagged Little Pill, coproduced it. "Uninvited," the hit single from City of Angels, is not on it.) "Well, let's go deeper here," the flack goes on. "I did ask the manager if I can describe any of the music, and he said he¹s not ready to go that far yet." Translation: It'll take a subpoena from Ken Starr to get Team Alanis to talk. As for Jewel, her new still-untitled album was produced by erstwhile Madonna collaborator Patrick Leonard, it's due Nov. 17, and it's not an "inspirational" Christmas album, as some wags have speculated. Neither is it a batch of leftover old songs: Atlantic executives vehemently deny published reports that they scrapped a full Jewel album that was ready for release in the spring of '97. "There never was a second record that was trashed," insists Atlantic's executive vice president and general manager Ron Shapiro. "She recorded about 70 percent of an album and abandoned it, so it wasn¹t even finished." Going into a Santa Monica studio over the last several months to cut her new album, Jewel opted to focus primarily on fresher, more recent tunes, instead of those from that lost session. Either way, nobody's expecting to repeat that first round of hysteria. "We went through it with Hootie," says Azzoli, "and I've said the same thing to Jewel: 'Listen, I'm in this for the long haul. You¹re going to sell 7 million the first time, and 2 million the second, and 2 million the third. Now we have a career. Now you¹re a bona fide star.'" Or, as Bob Dylan once put it, "she knows there's no success like failure, and failure's no success at all." Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hi everyone~ Jewel is back in Entertainment Weekly, this time in an article about Beau Sia's parody of A Night Without Armor. He made "Jewel-like" poems with a twist. Here's the article: Jewel embittered a lot of long-suffering poets with the megabucks she snagged for A Night Without Armor, and now Beau Sia's striking back. The 22-year-old NYU graduate recently published A Night Without Armor II: The Revenge, a volume of "Jewel-inspired" blank verse that borrows its jacket design from this summer's HarperCollins best-seller. Sia's deadpan parodies of such Jewel gems as "God Exists Quietly" ("inside my underwear/why don't you come over/and say hello") and "Dionne and I" (I do not/call her psychic line) have quickly won a following: Mouth Almighty Record's new literary imprint is about to triple their 1000-copy initial pressrun. "A lot of her poems are too long. If they were chopped in half they'd be better," opines Sia. "But I'm kind of pleased that there have got to be millions of kids getting into poetry now, because of Jewel. We are currently going through possibilities & I'll let you know when I know (so please refrain from asking in the meantime). The single is now scheduled to hit US radio stations on October 26th, so thats a great time to begin calling your local stations requesting the song. For the benefit of recent subscribers & those who are confused, heres a basic recap on everything of interest presently. October 98: Jewel will be doing a photo shoot for Rolling Stone & Vogue Magazine. She also films the video for her next single “Hands”, this week. This new single will hit radio stations on 10/26 followed by both foriegn & domestic releases shortly thereafter (store release dates have not been announced yet). These single releases will likely contain extra tracks and those tracks will likely be different from each other on the US & European releases. November 98 On November 14th, Jewel will be the featured musical guest on Saturday Night Live. Her long awaited 2nd album “HANDS” will be released three days later on Tuesday, November 17th (& I think the previous day in Europe) in North America. The confirmed final tracklist will be posted shortly & yes, it will also be an "enhanced CD" with multimedia content that you can play on your computer. A brief (few weeks) US Tour is currently being worked on. Dates & venues will be posted as soon as they are confirmed. Please be patient. I will post all that info in plenty of time. Also Jewel will be doing several other TV appearances in November & I'll keep you informed as they become confirmed. The video for "Hands" will also likely begin airing on VH1 & MTV around this time. That's the basic recap of current Jewel-news. Other additional previously posted info is: Jewel's movie "Ride With The Devil" is tentatively scheduled to hit movie theaters nationwide sometime in April of next year. She will also be featured in another film next year (on TV) called "Stand Up and Be Counted". This is a project by David Crosby & Graham Nash & is a film documentary of social activism in popular music. This will also be published in book form. The only other questions I'm getting are all related to various rumors about Jewel's current boyfriend. Sorry, not gonna touch that one. I only question J-team women about boyfriends when they are dating Jean Claude Van Damme. ;-) Best wishes, MrBB From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Mon Sep 28 18:58:23 1998 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id SAA09658 for jewel-news-outgoing; Mon, 28 Sep 1998 18:58:05 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <199809282258.SAA09658@smoe.org> To: Jewel-News@smoe.org From: Sinjin@socal.com Date: Date: 28 Sep 98 15:59:30 -0800 Subject: Jewel-News: Repost of Digital Arena Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk It's been a while since this has been posted. Jewel is the female lead in this Civil War film, which stars Tobey Maguire and Skeet Ulrich. "It was intimidating for her. She was the only girl with 10 guys and making movies was foreign territory to her," says Maguire. He adds once the singer felt comfortable with the technical aspects of film-making, "she was a very different person. She was far more outgoing. To her credit, she held her own." Maguire knows what it's like to be learning on the spot. "I'd never ridden a horse. My first day in the saddle, my riding instructor just shook his head. That's because the sensuous singer of the hit single "You Were Meant for Me" has found somebody meant for her. He's actor Christopher Douglas, who's best known for his 1994-97 role as Dylan Moody on ABC's One Life to Live. They've been friends, I'm told, since they met at a party three years ago. But their relationship took a serious turn earlier this year, when Jewel started recording the follow-up to her smash 1995 debut album, Pieces of You, and after her 18-month romance with French-Canadian model Michel Francoeur fizzled. The new couple seem very much in love. At a Santa Monica gym recently, the two made out before they worked out. Hi all, I've already had several people ask me if Jewel's single of "Hands" is already out. A promotional single for "Hands" with a brief Jewel intro has been sent to selected radio stations apparently. I do not know which stations, so you'll have to rely on each other for that info. Most major stations will have it by October 26th. However, no, the single has not been released. The actual commercial release (in store sales) date for this single has not yet been announced. And as you know, Jewel's album "SPIRIT" will be out November 17th throughout North America & Europe. Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk The Oprah show starring Jewel will be broadcast in the UK on Friday 9th October at 11am. It's on the Cable/Satellite channel Sky One. Also on Wednesday 7th October at 1am (actually early Thursday morning), UK VH1 are broadcasting a programme called Lilith Fair Music Festival which I suspect is what was broadcast last year in the US and had some Jewel content.
