The cover art is a colorful original drawing by Jewel. Each page in the journal book is lined on one side to write your poems, stories, thoughts and dreams. The other side of each page is blank for you draw or doodle on. The book is spiral bound and is 8" x 6.5" It was Jewel's idea to create a journal in order to promote and encourage the freedom of expression through writing. Seattle based Running Rhino & Co has been creating eco-friendly, life positive paper products since 1988. All printing is done using vegetable based inks and acid-free recycled papers. As they state in their company philosophy "By creating expressive paper products, we can be a strand in the worldwide web of communication. By creating we are following our dream." 3% from all sales of the journal will go towards Global Humanity and we thank RR&Co for their contribution. Jewel's participation in the movie is finished & things went extremely well. The film now goes into the editing & production phase with a an expected theatrical release expected in March of 99 & a Cannes Film Festival debut around that time. Everyone involved seems to be very pleased with Jewel's performance & she can now move on to what you've all been VERY patiently waiting for--the new album sessions, which will begin in a few weeks. :-) They still have every intention of having the album out in November to coincide with the holiday season. I'd also like to publicly thank Mike Connell & the 12 member EDA panel for their time & efforts in making the "EDAs Interview Jewel" project run very smoothly on this end. The EDA questions have already been sent on to Jewel & I plan on posting 2 answers per night from the 12th->16th, which is the 5 days leading up to the 2nd Annual Bearsville Reunion Campout that many EDAs will be attending all that weekend. (Go here for more info on that: http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup/bv/bv98.htm) This was a project I'd been discussing doing periodically with Lenedra for some time. I thank all the EDAs who sent in questions, voted or participated in any way. I think Jewel will enjoy this & hopefully we'll make this a periodic occurance on the Jewel lists. I think Mike will be posting your voting results of the top 20 questions tonight, so you all can see which questions Jewel will be dealing with. You'll be happy to know that although some are thought provoking, not all the questions are "over-serious". At first, I said "What the *%#@?!" to question #1, but its actually pretty interesting the more I considered it. Anyway, thanks for everybody's participation! :-) Also here's some interesting news about two of my "other pals", that will be of interest to many of you. Joy Eden Harrison has begun working on her new album & has an incredible batch of new songs. I'm extremely excited about this project because Joy has decided to have Cindy Lee Berryhill produce the album. Anyone who knows me well, is well aware that CLB is one of my favorite musicians so I'm real happy to hear of this decision. One of CLB's major strengths is her skills at arranging & I can't wait to hear what she & Joy cook up together on this project. I know this is gonna be a major step forward for Joy & I anxiously await the results! Also, Elizabeth Hummel called this morning and updated me on whats been going on with her. She recently had a great experience playing the local Lilith Fair date & recieved glowing reviews on her performance. Sarah M watched her set & was really taken by Elizabeth's dulcimer tunes. She even invited Elizabeth up on the big stage to join in on an allstar version of Marvin Gaye's "Whats Going On?" (One of my personal favorite songs :-) Elizabeth invites all San Diego area EDAs to join her at Java Joe's for her "Birthday Concert" this Saturday, July 11th at 9:00PM. Give her a birthday hug for me if you go. Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk =) Hey everyone! =) I spent the last week in the wonderful beach town of San Diego. I was very blessed to see many of our beloved musicians in action. =) Elizabeth Hummel got rave reviews by the press for her performance at the Del Mar Lillith Fair. Sarah M loved the dulcimer! Unfortunately, Elizabeth was destined to play the first set at 3:30 when the gates open only 25 minutes before. This meant the crowd was sparse yet, as people were scrambling to get in and get situatuated. The up side of this was that she had the undivided attention of the networks and press. I was one of the ones who missed the performance, so I won't review what I heard from a distance, although it sounded fantastic. =) Tara MacLean serenaded a much bigger crowd with hubby Bill Bell. Previous to LF, we caught Tara for a short set at a LF promotion at Starbucks in Del Mar. Here, she sang to some dedicated fans and a street full of moving vehichles, all of which slowed to a crawl, mesmerized by this muse with a heart of gold. At Lillith, Tara could be seen in the crowd, talking and listening to her fans. Let me be the first to say that it sure looked like Sarah M took a real big shine to Tara, kinda took her under her wing. Tara got some big solo time during the Indigo Girl's and Sarah's sets, all of which she stepped up to with grace and talent. =) To cap the rest of LF quickly, Sarah and Natalie Merchant were genuine and heart-stopping, as usual. Erica Badu (sp?) was nice until she got up on a soap box and preached about something utterly unintelligible (at least to me, and the general crowd reaction I observed). Kay's choice was cute, and bounced around the venue, friendly and talkative. Ingigo Girls did there usual performance, spotted with musicians and singers from the other bands. Without a doubt, I felt the one who stole the entire show was Billie Meyers. (Catch this artist and her band at your earliest possible convenience!!) Full of energy, sex appeal, and running all over the equipment and stage, Billie captivated with a flawless voice, even signing autographs in the middle of lyrics. Her CD, which is great, does not do her justice. =) I also caught a number of performances at Java Joes and the Ould Sod. Last Thursday was the Summer Songwriters Showcase at Joes featuring Gregory Page, Lisa Sanders, Frank Lee Drennen, Randi Driscol, Carlos Olmeda, John Katchur, Jeff Berkley, and a few more. The last two guys are part of a new band called the Redwoods that shows amazing promise. Lisa let leak something about a tour, but then said she didn't want it to get around the internet yet =). Carlos charmed the crowd with stories and jokes (get this guy on an LRT, actually... get them all!!!!!) and swooned through thoughtful ballads which are destined for a ride on the radio. Gregory played a very clean, beautiful show a few nights later at Joes, with a band featuring Frank Drennen. And Carlos and Frank charmed once again at Open Mike Night at the Ould Sod. =) This was my first time hearing many of the above artists. I have got to stress how impressed I am with wealth of talent that resides in the city of San Diego. Each and every one of these artists has incredible potential. I am encouraged to see some of them collaborating in bands. If they can stick it out, two bands to look for in the future, without a doubt, are the Redwoods and.... well... whatever Gregory Page decides to call his band next. I am only sorry I did not get to see Loam, Frank's band. =) Anyway, my hat off to the musicians of San Diego! =) Mark! Your music does not hint at you being an easily satisfied person nor does it imply that you will ever be content. For to be content is to lose desire, to stop striving, to settle. You have commented often in songs like Deep Water, most notably, on how we should strive to achieve and never give up our hopes and dreams, to never settle or compromise. This is in glaring contradiction to the prevailing beliefs in our society. We live in a world where pity and sacrifice are considered virtues. To me, however, pity is nothing more than active pity for weakness and sacrifice is, by definition, the surrender of a greater value for a lesser one; to concede. Therefore, a person's worth in our altruistic society is gauged by the degree to which he or she surrenders and betrays his or her values. In your climb to success, by refusing to give up your hopes and dreams you are standing proud in the face of a society that strikes down so many who try. However, on the other hand, I am wondering if there are any compromises, sacrifices, or concessions that you now regret making. And in closing, do you feel that you would have achieved the position your art has procured for you today if you were not physically attractive, if you were more average looking, if you were perhaps even unattractive or ugly? The basic question boils down to "How was your experience at Interlochen"? which is unchanged. If you, (David) really meant to use the word "expense", I'll correct Jewel about it. But I'm pretty sure this wasn't a "tuition" question....I specifically changed the last part(Did you perform at a local coffee shop? If so, what one?) because I knew the answer & wrote it privately to Dave. Her gig there was at Ray's Coffeehouse. To help me understand you (as a person) better, could you tell me something I dont know about you or do but didnt really digest? What do you want me to think of when I think of you? Sarah Elizabeth **The Shy angel** Note from MrBB: Just a few commas thrown in appropriately. :-) *************************************************************** I hope these 5 changes make sense to everyone. I did my best to improve while not changing any content. I simply used my best judgement as I was asked to do. All 15 other questions were given to Jewel exactly as sent in & posted previously. I'll begin posting Jewel's 10 answers, 2 per night, beginning on Sunday night, July 12th. Enjoy the weekend! The actual "number of votes info" was not included but I did give them to Jewel in top 20 order from #1 to #20. She'll be selecting 10 (or more) of her choosing to answer. MrBB PS. Also, regarding the two questions that were edited. We did this in an effort to clarify the question for Jewel. We think it gives them a much better chance of being chosen. David was happy with his Interlochen question changes. Sean agreed about his changes plus made a good point about including one more sentence, which I've done & resubmitted. Sean's question now reads as follows. #12 - Sean35RL@aol.com You have commented often in songs like Deep Water, most notably, on how we should strive to achieve and never give up our hopes and dreams, to never settle or compromise. In your climb to success, by refusing to give up your hopes and dreams you are standing proud in the face of a society that strikes down so many who try. However, on the other hand, I am wondering if there are any compromises, sacrifices, or concessions that you now regret making. And do you feel that you would have achieved the position your art has procured for you today if you were not physically attractive, if you were more average looking, if you were perhaps even unattractive or ugly? I'm really embarassed to say this, but I was reading Teen People, and there's an article about Jewel in it. It's the August 1998 issue, w/ the Backstreet Boys on the cover. There's also a small pic of Jewel on the cover as well. There are some great pix of Jewel in the magazine, and it has a bunch of poems from "A Night Without Armor". The article is as follows: POETRY SPECIAL PRICELESS JEWEL Her intimate, confessional songs have touched the hearts of millions and made Jewel a star. In her new book of poetry, A Night Without Armor, the singer bares her soul as powerfully on the page as she does on the stage. Here are our favorite gems. "Long before I wrote my first song, words formed as poems in my journals; and poetry drives my song writing today. I've learned that not all poetry lends itself to music--some thoughts need to be sung only against the silence. Poetry is the most honest and immediate art form that I have found, it is raw and unfiltered. It is a vital, creative expression and deserves to find greater forums, to be more highly valued, understood, and utilized in our culture and in our lives. There is such wonderful poetry in the world that wants to be given voice. My hope is to help inspire an appreciation and expression of that voice."---Jewel (here they printed a few poems from her book -- I'll just list them, rather than type them out) ON LOVE...AND LOSS 'So Just Kiss Me' 'I Keep Expecting You To' 'Cautious' 'I Guess What I Wanted Was' 'After the Divorce' ON GROWING UP 'I Look At Young Girls Now' 'The Slow Migration of Glaciers' ON LIFE 'You Tell Me' 'Miracle' From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Sun Jul 5 13:42:30 1998 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id NAA12826 for jewel-news-outgoing; Sun, 5 Jul 1998 13:42:13 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <199807051742.NAA12826@smoe.org> From: Tlcathome@aol.com Date: Sun, 5 Jul 1998 12:25:25 EDT To: jewel@smoe.org Subject: Jewel-News: NJC: Bearsville, Bearsville, Bearsville!!!! For those of you who have no idea what I am talking about, my name is Phil Kelnhofer and just over two years I somehow ended up in charge of making t- shirts for the original JewelStock. Last summer, after a lot of prodding from the EDA's I made the EDA shirt. Last winter I strayed from the list, moved, went with out a computer for a couple of months, and all-in-all lost track of things. Recently, I have started reading the list again, and I realized that there may be EDA's out there who would like the forty shirts I have remaining. These shirts are leftover from last fall, and unless there is an overwhelming demand, I do not plan on ordering any more. So that being said here is the original EDA shirt post. Any question should be directed to this account. Thanks. The EDA Shirt is here!!! Finally, The T-Shirt Guy (tm) has returned with a new, better than ever "Official" EDA T-Shirt. In 1996, the Everyday Angels wanted to make a shirt so we could easily spot each other at concerts. Designs were submitted, idea were exchanged. I became The T-Shirt Guy (tm) and was in charge of the project. Then the EDA world was turned upside-down with the announcement of JewelStock. The JS shirt satisfied the need and the EDA shirt was put aside. People never forgot, however, and have been asking me when was I going to finish the EDA shirt. Well, now I have my act together and a new design (which has Jewel and Lenedra's blessing) and I am ready to make the shirt available to the list. The shirt can be viewed and ordered over the web at http://www.cybercom.net/~pjk/EDA or if you do not have web access simply email at this address for all the information on the shirt (design, ordering, etc.). For those who don't know me, my name's Eric Montas, and last year on the list, I was in charge of a project called "The EDA Cover Tape," which was a tape of EDAs covering their favorite Jewel song. Since there's been such a renewed interest in the EDA Cover Tape, I have decided to reopen the tape tree for those who missed it the first time around. I figure this will keep everyone in anticipation of "The EDA Cover Tape 2", which is being put together by Mark Oxman (MAXMOUZE@aol.com), and should be out by the end of this year or early next year. If you are interested in getting a copy of the first EDA Cover Tape, e-mail me. I will then assign you a branch, who will then contact you with information of where to send your tape. Please read the original post below which was sent to the list April '97. It should answer any questions you may have regarding the tape. Take care. 'bye! This has been a long time in the making, but the tree for the EDA Cover Tape is officially underway! Huzzah! :) Some of you may be wondering, "What's the EDA Cover Tape?" Well, for you late-comers, the EDA Cover Tape is exactly what it is: EDAs doing cover songs. "Cover songs by whom?" you may ask. Well, Jewel. Duh. *bonk* :) Yes, a bunch of us strange EDAs covering Jewel songs. Oh, the horror! But amazingly enough, this tape is sweet. We have so much talent gathered here among us, it's scary. But enough of that. In no particular order, here is who is on the tape, and what songs they're doing (since I know you're interested): Liz Clark The ABCD Song Katie McCurry Let Them In WWSYS Carnivore Jessica Absence of Fear Angela DiIulio Flower I've Got the Blues More Than You Do Blues Been Down So Long Morning Song Greg Yanito I'm Sensitive Eric Montas Carnivore Foolish Games Angel Standing By William Cheng YWMFM Damon Schmidt Sometimes It Be That Way Rebecca A. Better than the 25 WWSYSs and 18 YWMFMs that some people thought we might get. So sign up for this limited edition re-release before it's too late! For more info on this >annual EDA event, go to: >http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup/bv/bv98.htm Greetings from the "adrenalin rush"! (I have been called far worse, you know.) I am de-lurking for a good reason... As part of the upcoming Bearsville '98 campout, I'd like to announce three SPECIAL EVENTS: First, "Return of the EDA Tape Grab Bag". To participate, make a 90 minute tape of your favorite music, and bring it to Bearsville. At our traditional Saturday night bonfire, participants toss 'em in a hat, grab a tape, and hopefully broaden their musical horizons... Also, if things work out, I'll serve up some of my famous Jewel "C'mon, I Wanna Give Ya S'Mores" (preferred by three outta four EDAs) at the bonfire. Second, the Harris Hospitality Hut will again be open, with plans to display the World's Smallest Drive-In Theatre, featuring unique animated shorts (no, NOT Mike Connell's) that encompass the tastes of well, Harris. (What amuses Harris? What doesn't?) Anyway, drop by and see why drive-ins are all but extinct in North America. (Didn't we make purple fuzzy bears extinct LAST year at Bearsville?) If art appreciation (music, culinary and film) isn't your bag, how's about old fashioned carnage -- err, competition? List historians can confirm many highly competitive events held since JewelStock... the 1996 Jewelympics at Hampton Beach (featuring the world's first exhibition of full contact horseshoes, won by Team Harris). The Paintball Wars of 1997 (won by Team Harris) at the EDA Great Looney Toons Adventure and Search for the Blue Llama Safari. Bocce Mania '97 (Team Harris, a DAMN CLOSE second, third and fourth). The '97 Bearsville Angels in the Outfield Wacked and Wacky Ball Game, won by Team Harris. Lifetime Achievement for most times thrown from tall heights, wild car chases and times set on fire at Living Room Tour shows, Harris. Twisted Twister Challenge '98, won by Harris. Anyone notice a trend here? ;-) So, here's your latest chance to derail the dynasty -- Angel Lazer Warz '98, aka, the BADWILL GAMES! (Hey, lighten up, it's only satire!) The rules are simple: teams of four EDAs enter the field, and compete against each other in a round-robin laser tag tournament. Teams pay a small entry fee to cover equipment and power cells (aka alkaline batteries). By the end of the weekend, one team receives the title, bragging rights, and gets to keep all their equipment (who the heck would be able to take it away from 'em, anyway?)... There will likely be a quick draw contest and other quirky mutations of the sport as well. Team Harris has already thrown their bent halos into the ring. Go ahead, make our day... ;-) Anyone going to Bearsville who is interested in playing, please email harrisbros@aol.com as soon as possible as we need a battery and laser sidearm count. WARNING: Disturbingly loud late night chicken noises will be made outside the tent flaps of any list veteran who fails to answer this challenge! On a down note, two weekend events have been cancelled. Tickets for the Llama Pack Tours of Woodstock are, unfortunately, now unavailable (Amy Neufeld-Harris bought them ALL and gave the llamas the weekend off). Better luck next year! The "Waffle Breakfast with Jewel" raffle has also been canceled, due to her not being anywhere near Bearsville that weekend. Hey, if she isn't doing the Goodwill Games, maybe Jewel could join our Badwill Games? Mr. BB? Hmmm? (Team Harris calls dibs on the cute blond chick with the crooked smile!) So, what's everyone been up to the last year or so while I have been Jewel list AWOL? Dennis Harris, not dead yet... just under REALLY deep cover. In the meantime, I wanted to tell everyone about a very cool project that Duff & Eric(Crashboy) have been working on. It's a new website that is dedicated to helping EDAs know where all the various LRT artists are playing & tour dates in general for these artists. Point your browsers to: http://thespis.com/crashboy/EDArtists/EDArtists.htm According to the site itself, the goal of this site is: "Through the Everyday Angels (EDA) mailing list, we have introduced each other to a plethora of new artists. This page centers on those up and coming artists who have benefitted and are still benefitting from EDA support, those who have made in difference in EDA lives, or both." You'll find LRT info, touring info & link info for (in alphabetical order): Cindy Lee Berryhill, Heidi Boh, Jenny Bruce, Mary Dolan ,Randi Driscoll, Patty Griffin, Emm Gryner, Joy Eden Harrison, Elizabeth Hummel, Tara MacLean, Holly McNarland, Dayna Manning , Gregory Page , Steve Poltz, Lisa Sanders, & Sarah Slean, with more to be added as time goes on. The coolest part of this site, IMO, is that theres a map of North America divided up into regions. You can simply click on your region & it'll tell you all the interesting gigs coming up in your area! :-) Please take advantage of this resource. It'll definately help connect you up to some great shows this summer. Also if you have additional info that should be included, contact Duff at TJtalken@aol.com & she'll get on it. And speaking of Duff, all EDAs within a reasonable distance to the Kanas City area, should attend Duff's LRT this Thursday evening, July 9th, featuring San Diego-ite Mary Dolan. You are guaranteeed a great time! Again, contact Duff at TJtalken@aol.com for directions & RSVP's. Visit this site & support these artists. There's a LOT more going on in EDA-land than Jewel! Also, many are writing me asking "When will Jewel's answers be posted?" For those who missed it somehow, recently The EDAs were allowed to submit 20 questions to Jewel, 10 of which Jewel will choose to answer. A 12 member EDA panel narrowed down all the questions submitted to 40 of the best. Then all the EDAs were given the opportunity to vote on these 40. This narrowed it down to the top 20. I gave these 20 questions to Jewel & she'll be picking 10 of them to answer. I will begin posting 2 of Jewel's answers per night, beginning this Sunday evening. I will then continue to post 2 more of Jewel's answers each night, Monday through Thursday next week for a total of 10 answers during those 5 nights in a row. If she answers more than 10 questions, it'll simply continue longer. It all begins in about 48 hours. Stay tuned! :-) MrBB ***************************************** And you may ask yourself: What cool gigs or LRT's are goin' on in my area?? BUTLER - Movie Editor Date: 07/05/98 00:01 In less than five years, she has gone from waitress to coffee-shop folk singer to multimillion-selling recording artist. She sang the national anthem at this year's Super Bowl. Just last month she hit the best-seller lists with Nights Without Armor, a collection of her poems. And next spring she will make her motion-picture debut in director Ang Lee's Civil War drama, "Ride With the Devil," which last week completed principal photography in the Kansas City area. But the blond, blue-eyed pop icon known as Jewel doesn't want to be remembered for any of that. "Even the arts are secondary in my life," the 24-year-old said recently as she stretched out on the carpeted floor of an office adjacent to "Ride With the Devil's" indoor set in a Central Industrial District warehouse. "It's my profession, sure, but it's not rocket science. In the end, I think of myself as a humanitarian. I hope when it's all over, my fame is as a spokesman for causes." She did in fact found a social-service agency early this year. Is there no end to this woman's ambitions? Of course it may not be ambition that drives Jewel as much as a craving for adventure. Her life reads like a novel: born Jewel Kilcher to hippie parents, raised on an Alaskan homestead without electricity or running water, performing music with her father in taverns. Then, while still a teen-ager, she headed for Southern California, living out of her van and performing her songs in small San Diego clubs. She was discovered and recorded an album ("Pieces of You") that quickly found its way to the budget bin. Undeterred, she went on a one-woman city-to-city tour to promote the CD, organizing fans to call radio stations and request her songs. It worked. Fueled by the single "Who Will Save Your Soul?" and a couple of key TV appearances that allowed people to get a glimpse of Jewel's onstage charisma, "Pieces of You" got a second wind and went on to sell more than 6 million copies. But now, Jewel said, "I've become very bored with music. I've always done lots of things: sculpture, marble carving, dance. I've devoted four years of my life to music, but I reached a point where it was no longer a challenge. I was dying of boredom. "I really need challenges," she said, fiddling with the long, blond hair extensions she wears as Sue Lee, a hard-luck Missouri farm girl during the Civil War. "I don't feel alive unless I'm taking chances." Part of that chance-taking involves inciting passionate responses from the public, both pro and con. To her fans, she's a guitar-strumming folkie prophet. They design adoring Web sites in her honor. To her detractors she is "the world's luckiest waitress" who, thanks to good fortune and her undeniable sexual charisma, has parlayed the musical musings of an introspective teen-ager into an entertainment empire. To them also, her new book of poetry provides an irresistible target: a bunch of youthful musings on aging, love, sex and jealousy. Jewel said that she wrote the poems as a way of getting in touch with her feelings and that until a publisher expressed interest in them, she had no intention of seeing them in print. "I knew I was setting myself up for criticism," she said. "But who cares? Emily Bronte was criticized ... and her work was brilliant. If I'm afraid of failure, then I'm not being sufficiently challenged." Her most recent challenge is movie acting. Although she had little experience and no formal training, director Lee saw something in Jewel that his Civil War film needed. "She had a period upbringing and a period look," he said over a lunch in the production's mess tent. "She's even got period teeth." (Told of this remark about her orthodontically challenged smile, Jewel laughed and said, "Whoever thought my teeth would get me work?") Lee continued: "Also, this is very much a boy's story, and I could see that Jewel had a sexual dominance that would let her hold her own with all these young men. I think people are going to be very happy with her work." Not that it was easy. Jewel may give the impression of supreme self-confidence, but her baptism in movie acting was traumatic. "I was the greenest," she said. "I showed up not knowing what it meant to hit my mark or to play to the camera. I had to relearn how to walk, to talk, to get rid of all my modern mannerisms. I had to realize that my face would be 20 feet tall on the screen and that a little would go a long way." Panic dominated her first couple of days on the set. "I knew I was in real trouble," she said. "I was in tears. But Ang knew how to calm me. He's a really quiet person, and I appreciated that. I don't work well with a tyrant. But Ang and the guys have all been patient. "What I finally realized is that to perform music, I pitch myself up to a real high, then walk out on stage keeping that rocket-booster level up for two hours. Afterward I'm absolutely hollow; there's nothing left. "But in the movies you have to deliver that intensity again and again over an entire day of filming. I had to learn to pace myself. But after the first couple of days, I started getting the hang of it." Then there was the collaborative nature of film. Jewel said that when she tours, she usually travels alone, setting her own schedule. But a movie set is like an army on the move. There's a lot of hurry-up-and-wait while all the elements vital to a scene are put in place. "I'm not used to team sports," she said. "But on this film there are so many young guys running around. It's like being in school again." In retrospect, Jewel said, it might have been easier to do something lighter for her first movie -- perhaps a romantic comedy. "This film is really dramatic, and it puts Sue Lee through the wringer. Lots of crying." "Ride With the Devil" opens with Sue Lee's marriage, attended by local boys Jake (Tobey Maguire) and Jack Bull (Skeet Ulrich). The newly married Sue Lee flirts with Jack Bull. When next we encounter Jewel's character, the Civil War has been raging for a year. Sue Lee is now a widow, living on a farm near Jack Bull and Jake's winter hideout. She initiates an affair with Jack Bull, by whom she has a baby. When that romance ends badly, the unwed mother finds herself being nudged into yet another relationship, this time with the naive Jake, who knows a lot about killing but nothing about women. "Sue Lee is incredibly brazen for her time and place," Jewel said. "She's savvy to the politics of her circumstances. She understands her place as a woman and how she'll have to use her wiles to get what she needs. You know, during that time, widows were considered incredibly intriguing because they actually knew about sex." But Sue Lee is essentially an unhappy figure -- in Jewel's words, "half woman and half child" -- whose dreams collapse as she is reduced to a refugee dependent on the charity of others. Jewel even wrote a song for Sue Lee, one she performs only for herself. "It was an exercise to help me get in character. It's a sad song that really isolated her emotions, her feelings of loss." Next month, her boredom with music apparently behind her, Jewel is scheduled to go into the studio to record her second CD. (Watch for a release in the fall.) And she's keeping her eyes open for more acting gigs, praising director Lee for making her first film experience pleasurable. "Ang's very nurturing," she said. "He really cared about my development as an actress -- I mean beyond this particular movie." And increasingly, she said, she's devoting more time to Higher Ground for Humanity, the advocacy agency she founded earlier this year. "It's an umbrella organization that coordinates programs and provides support for a wide variety of environmental and humanitarian efforts," Jewel said. "You get more done with a united front." Asked how she can juggle so many different careers, Jewel shrugs. "I trust my own rhythm. I've always tended to do more than one thing at a time. And I was taught never to believe my own press." And, we are very fortunate that over 30 happy EDA campers plan to attend -- give me a DOUBLE WOOHOO!!. But now is the time when everybody starts asking, "What should I bring?" More than anything, bring yourself! We take care of each other, so don't worry! Nobody starves, gets stranded behind, or does without when EDA's are around. However, if you want to be prepared, here are some helpful reminders. First, camping at Steve's lives the theme "What's yours is mine, what's mine is yours," so be willing to share what you got and always try to bring a little extra if you can, but of course, respect the belongings of others (like I need to point that out to EDA's :-). The following list will serve as a MAJOR reminder for all those who might forget the little things to bring. 1. Cash is king -- First, you'll need $5 per night that you plan on staying at Steve's, and you'll probably need to buy some food/drinks/etc. when you get there or, better yet, bring some food and drink with you!!!. Plan on extra $$$ if you plan on any extracurricular activities or shopping in Woodstock. Also, there will probably be a good-bye breakfast at Diner Diner Diner =) 2. Toilet Paper -- There are modern (yet slightly rustic) restroom/shower facilities, but Steve's does not supply toilet paper. It has always been in demand the past few years. 3. Flashlight w/extra batteries -- There are NO lights at Steve's Campground except what you bring, so plan on having something to light your way. 4. Your premade tape for the 2nd annual EDA Share-the-music tape grab bag. Just put on artists that you love, especially up and coming acts. 5. A jug or bottles of water -- Water was another "in-demand" item. 6. Snack food -- Most meals are hot dogs, hamburgers and such, which we can always buy when we get up there. But snack food is something you can buy cheaper at home and bring your favorite. Plus, everyone gets hungry at different times and lots of snack food keeps everyone happy until meal time. 7. Folding chairs -- Or plan on sitting on the ground -- a lot (just FYI, K- mart has the folding camping chairs for $9 this week!! 8. Sleeping bag, blanket, a warm throw, or something, just anything to keep warm. If the past two years tell us anything, it is that the Catskills get down right cold at night, even in July. Plan on weather in the 40-50 degree range at night, I'll try to remember to let you all know the weekend forecast for the area Wednesday sometime. 9. A towel, soap, etc. if you plan on showering. Also, toothpaste and other toiletries you just can't (or don't want to) live without. For the extra prepared: ** A tent would be great, but usually there is extra room with other EDAs. In the past being "tent roomies" has been a great way to get to know other people. ** An air mattress or foam pad -- the ground gets hard after the first night. ** A cooler -- even empty is fine, we'll fill it soon enough. ** Good walking shoes/sandals that you don't care a lot about because they'll probably get ruined. Mine did last year :-/ ** A warm sweater/jacket for around the campfire at night. Other notes: Parking -- There is limited space to park in the campground without blocking someone in or occupying prime camp sites. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE think of others before you pull up and block everyone else (EDAs and others) from access to campsites. Late arrivals -- Steve usually puts us all in 2-3 adjoining camp areas. Expect that we'll all be packed together and you may not get the perfect spot under a tree, close to the bubbling brook, with a view of the sunset. If you have any other questions please don't hesitate to e-mail me. Rob, the kids and I are heading up Thursday morning so don't expect return e-mails after that time. See ya there!!!! Many EDAs are concerned that they may never see the light of day - and while we acknowledge that they aren't where you are at right now, many of us feel that they are still very valid pieces in their own right, and wonder what exactly is to become of them. Cheers - Mike Answer from Jewel: Lots of people probably have all these songs on Jewelstock and other tapes. It isn't where I am right now. The quality of it isn't such that I would want to release it. I might use parts of it on a current project I'm working on. *********************************************** Stick around. I think there's some misinformation circulating & this may help those wondering about it. First of all, its called Common Ground, not "Higher Ground" (although I like that Stevie Wonder tune!). This is a common mistake in the press. At present, Common Ground has no interest in "collecting donations" & is more for Jewel to donate money to projects that she supports, but primarily to raise awareness of these projects & causes, a major one being "Community Volunteerism". So if you are serious about getting involved, get involved in your own community. Theres even a group that splintered off this list called EDAFoundation thats dedicated to helping you do this alone or in groups with other EDAs. Go to this address & find out more if you really want to be involved: http://www.theartof.com/edaf OK, now onto this fanclub thing. As I wrote to the EDA that asked me about doing a newsletter, "Great, sure. Go for it." Fan clubs & newsletters start everyday. The only ingredients needed is fans & volunteer workers. Anyone who's motivated to work on it for the sheer enjoyment of working on it, should do so. Fan club administration is rarely a money making scene. It's usually, at best, a "break-even" setup run by dedicated people. And I totally agree with whoever said that theres no reason to even contact Jewel management about it, until you have a successful concrete thing already happening. One thing I will ask is that whoever is organizing this please post to the list with contact info. I'm getting many asking me about it & I know nothing & have nothing to do with it, other than wishing you all good luck with it, of course. :-) MrBB [There were several posts on the regular list about Common Ground, Jewel's Foundation and about a fan club. Lately, an EveryDay Devil has been abusing some list members with some quite nasty anti-Jewel emails. (if you haven't gotten one, trust me, they are vulgar) This person tried to post to the list in the last few days, but of course they did not get thru. Now this person has resorted to emailing list members privately. The reason he/she even has your email address is that they are obviously subscribed via another email address, which makes it easy for them to know folks' email addresses, especially ones who have posted recently. Anyway, I am mainly writing you to let you know that these emails of course are not coming to you through this mailing list and I am also just advising anyone who gets these emails to NOT reply to this dimwit, as that only fuels the person on to continue doing it. Ignore this person and quite likely he/she will eventually get bored and stop. There was one Grand Prize winner and ten runners' up. I checked the grand prize winner and runners' up against the roster of list subscriptions (email addies & some names supplied on the web site) and lo and behold there is a list member/EDA among the winners!!! :-) I didn't have to check her email addy, as I write this person quite often and obviously recognized her name right off the bat :-) Against the normal list policy of posting a poem, lyric or story not written by Jewel herself, I have decided to share this EDA's poem with you all, afterall it was judged by Jewel herself as one of the best submitted! :-) Congratulations to Rachel Katherine Musser, Age 12, MUSSERR@newton.hartwick.edu Of course, some of the other winners could be EDAs who just happen to be subscribed with another address. (some of the other names/addresses actually looked familiar to me, including the Grand Prize winner, Daniel Nester) Anyway, here's Rachel's winning poem: - The Whispering Voice - Streams to the river river to the sea Lantern in her hand she follows after me In the chilling moonlight she looks at the stars that weave a web of colors so bright... I wanted to send this email out to you about my monthly concert series, "Tales From the Living Room" As most of you know, living room concerts are pretty damn special. Unlike your typical venue that just wants to book a singer that will fill up the room and help the venue have a successful business evening, playing in a person's living room is far more, well, how shall I say--humane. While playing in a living room, the siner has the opportunity to look around him or herself and really take notice of the connections being made with the audience--that person who's really listening, the person to whom the song hits home, the other one who can really understand what it's all about... To me, this is what it's all about--that connection. That *realization* of a natural talent and gift in action--in it's truest sense--shared between people and free to fly around. It seems like this is the singular most important thing, what makes it all "worth it." Many of you have been to living room concerts, either at my house or at other people's houses, whether it be at a Longfellow Street Concert with the Snyder family, at Alan's annual Cape Cod picnic with musical entertainment, at a Living RoomTour stop, or elsewhere. And many of you know how special it is--like that most beautiful gift being offered from Pandora's box, hope and faith, that makes all the other ills somehow bearable. The love I feel for hosting these concerts is enormous. To me, it's one of the *funnest* things I can do--sharing music I love with the people who really have become a part of me (by now a good deal of you have received, rather randomly, evidence of this...). I had a brainchild which I feel I must act upon: turning these occasional gigs into an organized, actual, monthly series. I have dubbed this effort "Tales From the Living ROom." How honoured I feel to be able to do this! The next few months have been "scheduled" starting with the official kick-off concert on AUGUST 15, featuring JOY ASKEW and JENNY BRUCE, both from New York City. The fun should begin around 7:30 or so in the evening, and, as usual, there is an admission donation of $10, all of which will be split equally between these two AMAzING women. Those of you who were at my first living room concert on May 2 know how incredible and how *touching* a singer Jenny is. The rest of you have heard about it. The beautiful thing is, it's all true! Jenny is the most soulful, most personal, and most earth-moving singer I have ever come across. Listening to her for even just five minutes always seems to make the worried sighs dissappear. Some of you may know Joy Askew. Last summer Joy toured with The Lillith Fair on the Village Acoustic stage and has had a 13 year long history with the New York (& national) music scene. Her talent is so beautiful and moving that she has toured with Joe Jackson, Laurie Anderson, and Peter Gabriel. Most recently Joy has completed the music for an independent movie called WHEN and has taken this music and made a sort of "soundtrack" of her songs called "When: The Bootleg" For those of you who have neverh eard Joy or who havenever heard *of* Joy, you will not regret letting her sing to you. "Amazing" does not even begin to describe how I feel towards her music. To wrap up/give ou the low-down... August 15 7:30 PM Tales From the Living Room Kick-Off Concert 76 Boston Ave, Medford, MA 02155 (email me for directions) $10 minimum donation Joy Askew & Jenny Bruce just remember one thing...this is an alcohol free & smoke-free event. I mentioed that the next few months have been scheduled. I knew an EDA won, but hadn't had the pleasure of knowing her until tonight, although she's been an EDA for quite some time. I spoke to her for awhile tonight & I can tell you that they made a perfect choice! I also know Jewel was very happy with the show & really enjoyed meeting her. She has decided that she'd enjoy sharing her experience with all of you, but prefers not to be bombarded by replys for now. So, I'm forwarding her message to all of you. Remember though, that the list is shut down until Sunday night when Mike gets back from Bearsville, so no posts will go through until Mike turns it all back on. So you may want to hold off on posting for now. I knew this was something most would definately enjoy, so I'm using this special function to put it through. I hope it formats OK on your system. Usually Mike fixes up my long post formatting & I'm flying solo here. Don't forget to watch our new EDA celebrity Monday night at 11:00PM on MTV FANatic. And without further delay, I turn you over to our guest of honor. Enjoy, MrBB Hi everyone! I'm sorry I have not written anything sooner but I guess I am still in the heaven over the FANatic show. First of all let me say I wish all the EDA's could have gone - it was absolutely amazing and I will never forget it as long as I live. Part of me feels guilty that I was the one picked when I know that there are so many of you guys who are just as deserving. Don't get me wrong I am totally ecstatic that I was picked but I just wish more of you could have had this experience too. Let me tell you a little about what happened. First of all this came as a total shock to me - my door to my office flew open Monday morning and in came my best friend Meg and cameras and lights and Meg was screaming that we were going to see Jewel. I almost fainted (as you will probably see on the video - I then proceeded to go completely nuts!!!!). They got me into a limo and we were on our way to the airport. They filmed us everywhere we went - it was pretty strange at first always having a camera in your face, but I was too excited to notice it that much. Anyway the airport was a huge fiasco because first out tickets were messed up and then we missed our connecting flight. I wasn't complaining though - I mean come on who would? I was still going to meet Jewel so there was no complaining from me! Anyway they ended up chartering a jet to get us there (I was impressed!). We flew out to Montana which was the perfect place to be interviewing Jewel. It was soooo gorgeous with all the beautiful scenery - it took my breath away. Well finally the next day after 1 hour of sleep, no food (because I was so nervous), and much anticipation I finally got to meet and interview Jewel. First of all let me say thank you to all of the EDA's who submitted questions to the list for Jewel to answer over the Internet. I didn't steal your questions, but I did ask some questions that I came up with from all of the questions I have read. I figured that since you guys all couldn't be there the least I could do was to get the answers to the questions that you guys have been wondering instead of the same old questions that we have practically memorized! When I met her I was immediatly put at ease. She is absolutely one of the sweetest people I have ever met - really down to earth. She rode her horse up to meet me. We sat down outside of this cabin on the side of a mountain with more mountains in the background (I'm not that good at giving a mental picture - Sorry). She gave me a hug and it was so cool because the interview really turned into more of a conversation then a strict question and answer session. She even asked me questions about my life which I thought was pretty cool. I was nervous that she would think I was just some obsessed fan, but after she got to know me a little the interview turned into a conversation between friends type of thing. She answered all my questions and as long as MTV doesn't cut out the good questions I think you will like the answers she gives (since most of the questions were inspired by the EDAs). All in all I think I only spent an hour with her but I learned a lot and this experience really inspired me even more. We talked about the EDAs a little and she had lots of good things to say about us. I hope MTV keeps that part in because she talked about Jewelstock and how everyone has banded together to raise money for different charities, etc. It seemed that she really loves the support we give her, but most of all she loves the fact that we take her inspirations and give back to the people around us. I made a Jewel book that I keep the lyrics to a lot of her songs in and I showed it to her. She was so funny because as she started looking through it she would say things like "I forgot that song exsited!" or "Oh yeah" and begin to mumble the lyrics. It was really cute. I don't want to ruin Monday night for you guys and since I am not sure what they will put in the video and what they will cut I think I will watch the show and if they leave out an interesting questions or funny stories that she told I will write another e-mail and fill all of you in. I am still in so much shock about the whole thing. It was the chance of a life time and I will always remember all that happened. Even just an hour with her gave me this great emotional high that I still haven't come down from - I just want to get out there and make a difference. Well I hope this post answered some of the questions you guys have been having. Like I said earlier I'm sorry I didn't get this out sooner and I hope you guys all watch the show. Oh and please be nice - I was so excited that I come across a little ditzy on tape. I just couldn't stop smiling and I was so nervous, so please keep that in mind. I am not always that nuts, but when it comes to meeting Jewel it is hard to keep from being so happy. Regardless of what you see on these various websites, Jewel & Sarah's episode will be on tonight at 11PM. I even called MTV to confirm this earlier today. Oprah is still scheduled for Wednesday & I'd advise setting VCRs for CBS Sunday Morning over the next several weeks. Her segment will turn up on one of these coming Sundays. Also,I know we have several fans of Joy Eden Harrison here & I just spoke to Cindy Lee Berryhill, who's producing Joy's new (2nd) album. Things are going very well & everyone is pretty excited about this project, especially me! For musicians, Joy's primarily using her regular pianist John Erickson & drummer Jeff Dalrymple, but they are augmented by Garage Orchestra bassist Chris Davies & a 3 piece string section including G.O. cellist Renatta Bratt. They mentioned trying to have a small run of "advance CDs" available toward the end of next month, to coincide with a Living Room Tour she'll be embarking on with Lisa Sanders in late August. Enjoy, MrBB ******************************************************** Dear EDA's, So, how fitting that as you have gathered for the Jewelstock Reunion, I am making my second attempt at my second record. I am very excited this time. The producer I'm working with thinks very similarly, musically, to me. I think it will come out good--though as always I am terribly nervous. Right now I'm in Alaska for a period of time that seems to diminish each year. It is so lovely and so beautiful. I find myself not getting the much needed sleep, though. I'm going outside early early until late late. I think to get rest I'll have to check myself in some place where they tie you to the bed and give you sleep intravenously. I hope you are all doing well and taking care of each other. Thanks again for being such a cool and understanding lot. Judd" To: jewel-news@smoe.org Subject: Jewel-News: Rare Angels and Radio Angels Jewel tapes available again Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hey, First let me briefly introduce myself. I'm James Judd, administrator and webmaster of the AngelFood Bank (AFB) project. The AFB is a bunch of EDA volunteers who are willing to make tapes for anyone on the Jewel lists. The AFB was created to address the growing shortage of quality angelfood, and the logistical challenges of treeing new offerings for EDA's to so many people. AFB volunteers tape on a continuing basis, so anytime someone joins a Jewel list they can get an ever increasing number of Jewel tapes through us. Dan Stark has been kind enough to provide masters of Rare Angels and Radio Angels to me, which I've distributed to the volunteers. Now you have the opportunity to get these two tapes on the web in addition to MrBB's Future Folklore volume 3 if you don't have it already. The quality of the tapes is better than the ones I got back in early '96, so if your copy is worn out you should consider getting this fresh low-generation copy. So if you're interested in getting one or all three tapes, all you need to do is visit our web site at: http://www.angelfoodbank.org If you have any questions, you can mail info@angelfoodbank.org, or if you run into problems you can mail me at webmaster@angelfoodbank.org. I just put the site on a new server, so it will perform well for you. We'll be offering these three tapes as well as more in the future on a continuing basis, so don't panic if you don't have web access this week. We plan to be here for a long time :-) Please use the web for signup- if you don't have web access just wait until you can borrow it- you'll only need it once as after the initial signup the rest can be conducted by email. How do I get my tapes? 1) Go to the web site, have a look at the tape descriptions and tracklists. 2) Decide which you want and sign up for them on the site. 3) You'll be given the name of you volunteer immediately on the site. 4) You'll get an automated email from them shortly afterwards. 5) You'll send off blank tapes to your volunteer with return postage, and they'll make tapes for you (detailed instructions are in the automated email) 6) They'll mail your tapes back to you, and you'll be in for a huge treat if you haven't heard these classics before :-) If there's anything missing from the site that would help you sign up easier, just drop me an email and we'll take it into consideration for the next version of the site. I think it explains itself well. Please, no payment for tapes as this could be misunderstood as selling for profit, and we don't do that. All the volunteers have been touched by other eda's making angelfood for us for free, and we want to pass that feeling and the music on to you. Just follow the instructions you'll get after signing up and we'll all be happy... you with your tapes and us with the satisfaction of spreading the music :-) Enjoy the tapes, The AngelFood Bank From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Thu Jul 23 19:37:09 1998 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id TAA10772 for jewel-news-outgoing; Thu, 23 Jul 1998 19:37:08 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <199807232337.TAA10772@smoe.org> Date: Wed, 22 Jul 1998 17:35:55 -0400 To: jewel@smoe.org From: Mike Connell Subject: Jewel-News: Winners of the "Judged by Jewel" Poetry contest! UPDATE!! Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hi folks, I have no firm facts as to what has happened or what is going on, but when I got back from the Bearsville '98 weekend on Sunday night, I had more than a few emails asking me what had happened to the "winners/runnersup" pages of the HarperCollins/TVGen/Jewel poetry contest that were on the TV Gen site last Thursday, when I had posted that they had the winners on the TV Gen Jewel page. The pages that had announced the winner and 10 runnersup (including EDA Rachel Katherine Musser) had disappeared, as if they never existed. Then, this morning (Wednesday) THIS was on that page: Note: Due to circumstances beyond TVGEN's control, the announcement of winners in the Jewel Poetry Contest has been delayed. "Hmmmm, they had them up there Thursday" I thought. D*mn if I wasn't puzzled. :-) I got back from work, re-checked the page and low and behold the Grand Prize Winner, and ten runners up were back up, although there were two major differences. The Grand Prize Winner that WAS up there last Thursday, and at least one other poem from last Thursday are gone! Both that are now gone were over the previously announced limit of "75 words or less". I recall a list upheaval of protest when these long poems were discovered and that some list members said they were gonna write and complain, referring that they too had longer poems they'd have entered had they known the rule would have been ignored. Also, the other main difference from last Thursdays' winner and runnersup pages is that the names and email addresses of all the winners/runnersup are now gone, with the exception of our own EDA runnerup Rachel ( !!! ), however only her name is still up there, they took down her email address too. Last Thursday I had checked all the other winners/runnersup against the subscription rosters of the list, and only Rachel's address matched up then. Since the email addresses of the two "new" winners/runnersup are not posted on the page, I can't tell if either of the two new poems were written by EDAs. Anyway, what I guess this all means is that the sponsors of the contest must have realized their mistake of having 2 winners with long poems (over the limit specified in the rules), and acted accordingly, as all eleven poems up there now have less than 75 words. The new web pages with the winners and runnersup can be found at http://www.tvgen.com/jewel/winner.htm and http://www.tvgen.com/jewel/runnersup1.htm and http://www.tvgen.com/jewel/runnersup2.htm Again, against the normal list policy of posting a poem, lyric or story not written by Jewel herself, I have decided to share Rachel's poem with you all, afterall it was judged by Jewel herself as one of the best submitted! :-) Congratulations to Rachel Katherine Musser of NY MUSSERR@newton.hartwick.edu Here's Rachel's winning poem: - The Whispering Voice - Streams to the river river to the sea Lantern in her hand she follows after me In the chilling moonlight she looks at the stars that weave a web of colors so bright... Singer-songwriter Jewel has selected the winners of a poetry contest held in conjunction with the release of her first book of poems, A NIGHT WITHOUT ARMOR, a New York Times best seller. The Grand Prize Winner is Joe Householder of Houston, Texas, a 33-year-old whose winning entry is entitled, "August Evenings--Age 14." He will receive $500, which Jewel will match with a donation to a charity of the winner's choice. He also receives an autographed copy of the book and a non-signed CD version of the book. Householder reports on politics and public policy for KTRH Newsradio in Houston, and says that while he has written poetry for his own pleasure since the age of 10, he has never attempted to publish it. He finds much of Jewel's writing to be "compelling, with a rich and emotional feel to it." He says that winning the grand prize is "a rather amazing surprise." Ten runners-up come from all over the United States and range in age from 12 to 41. Each will receive an autographed copy of the book and a non-signed CD version of the book. The runner-up poems include: "Reluctantly Released" by Crystal Irene Hunter, Kalamazoo, MI, age 26 "The Golden Mean" by Elmar Mamedov, Rockville, MD, age 25 "The Whispering Voice" by Rachel Katherine Musser, Oneonta, NY, age 12 "Patriotism" by Todd Reynolds, Cheyenne, WY, age 23 "The Ring" by Madelaine Sauk, Philadelphia, PA, age 23 "God Poem" by Rick Schober, Maynard, MA, age 41 "His Parents Ask About My Pedigree" by Christina Springer, Pittsburgh, PA, age 34 "Nineteen Eighty-Six" by Thomas Swiss, Iowa City, IA, age 40 "Letter Writing #1" by Lizzie Wann, San Diego, CA, age 26 "Black Water" by User235688@aol.com The full texts of the winning poems can be found on the TVGEN web site at: http://www.tvgen.com/jewel During the four weeks of the contest, 5,270 entries flooded into the TVGEN web site. Jewel selected the winning poems herself after initial screening by a panel of judges headed by Bob Holman, well-known in the New York City poetry community. Jewel's book of poems, A NIGHT WITHOUT ARMOR, was released by HarperCollins Publishers on May 19, 1998, and is a national best seller. The 24-year-old multi-platinum-selling musician, who spent part of her childhood in Homer, Alaska, has been reading and writing poetry since a very early age. There is just a little bit...... This is what he wrote me: >Hey Mike. It looks like this is a new version of the same >concert. It's just been edited differently. Hope you can tune in. I'm not at all sure what it all means, and neither does MrBB (who I called), but I hope it's not just that all they "edited" was changing the incorrect song titles from the original/first "Jewel: Hard Rock Live" :-) Some speculation is that since the original show was an hour and three minutes, with maybe forty-two minutes of actual Jewel (the original had TONS of commercials) , they MAY have added a track/new song or two from the taping, as they taped a heck of a lot more than 1:03 back in February 1997 when it was done. Again, this will be on at Midnight Eastern Time on Saturday night on VH1, check your local listings for your area :-) Mike :-) From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Sat Jul 25 09:42:52 1998 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id JAA01411 for jewel-news-outgoing; Sat, 25 Jul 1998 09:42:16 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <199807251342.JAA01411@smoe.org> Date: Thu, 23 Jul 1998 08:44:36 -0500 (CDT) From: "James H. I was always told 'if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is' and I still believe that. The AFB is the exception to that rule. Many eda's have offered to make tapes for the list in the past, but with so many members it can be overwhelming. So about 40 of us have gotten together to make tapes for you, and it has snowballed into a real project :-) So even though we might sound businesslike and professional, it's still just a bunch of eda's making tapes for you. There's no profit involved in getting the masters from MrBB and Dan, no profit involved in getting the copies of the masters out to the volunteers, and no profit involved in getting the tapes out to you. All that happens is you send postage and blank tapes to you volunteer, and they send the music back to you. It'll end up costing you about $10 for all three tapes depending on your preferences for mail and blank quality, but we don't see any of that. In fact, we lose money making Jcards, buying equipment, and burning electricity and gas to make these tapes for you. No volunteer will ever ask you to send money, and if they do just let me know and they won't be a volunteer any more :-) But I seriously doubt that'll happen as it takes a special person to volunteer all the effort and time it takes to make tapes. If you have any doubts, you're welcome to mail me at webmaster@angelfoodbank.org. Of course you're welcome not to send in any tapes, but I don't know of one person who hasn't gotten their tapes returned to them. Sometimes due to a family emergency or lost mail it takes longer than they expect, but I know a couple of times we've replaced tapes lost in the mail with ones we've purchased ourselves to avoid people thinking we've cheated them. MTV FANatic with Sarah interviewing Jewel Sarah: I’ve been reading your poetry a lot lately and I was wondering if your poetry was inspired by things you’ve gone in your own life or if it’s experiences things you see other people go through? Jewel: It’s both. I think a lot of them are very personal and specific to my life. (Foolish Games video plays) …and a lot of times are observations. Me in airports watching people, or things like where as in music often I write in first person. Like Daddy but it isn’t about me. Sarah: I heard you were dong a movie, Ride with the Devil, and I was wondering if you would like to tell us about the movie? Jewel: I’ve really wanted a changed. I was getting bored with music. Especially being on the same record for four or five years or however long it was. So I really wanted a new challenge and it was definitely a challenge and it was really hard and I chose a really hard dramatic role instead of a light and funny. Uh, so it was good. I’m ready to go back to music though. Sarah: Since you’ve been doing writing poetry, singing, and the acting, which one do you prefer? Jewel: I’m glad I’m a writer. Being able to express yourself is a very, very valuable tool. It helps me become a better person. Sarah: You’ve written many songs and I was wondering what song is your most auto-biographical song you’ve written to date? Jewel: they all are, in a way. You know what I mean? YWMFM video clip plays Sarah: I was reading your poetry book and I read this poem, Sara Said, and my name is Sarah and I read this poem first just because, I, uhm, at first was kinda at first taken back and I was reading that how a 15 year old girl couldn't say no to a guy and was going through all this turmoil. And I was adopted, my family. And I always kinda resembled her the way my biological parents. So when I read that I was kinda thinking that maybe it just wasn’t they gave me up, maybe it was just the fact there were problems, and there were things, you know , so I was being selfish, thinking, you know, “she just gave me up”. And it gave me a lot of piece of understanding that I should be more opened minded about things and I shouldn’t… Jewel: I know it’s hard as parents,. You always feel they should be like super humans. They’re dealing with your life. They can mess you up or they can create you. We’re so vulnerable to them. At the same time, like, God their humans. You know what I mean. It’s like you can’t help but feel like “Okay, I know how you feel” but it doesn’t make it right. I can understand it a lot better. Sarah: But I was wondering where you got your inspiration for that specific poem of yours? Jewel: When I was doing the book I was afraid about putting the really frank poems in, like Sara Said. I just decided like, what I love a kid was honest writing. Like Anais Nin or what like Burkowsky said, or whatever it was, I like what people are saying are real. I wrote that song about kids, just cause, there were lots of kids having sex, like at 12. And I was like (Jewel stunned) “12?” I was playing barbie dolls. (Sarah agrees by saying right, right). But at the same time, you know, I went to school where sex ed was really common. I’m sure you did too. They teach you how to put condoms on, the whole nine yards. But they didn’t teach me about like valuing myself. And I look at women, ones I grew up in bar rooms, I see a lot of women waitresses and see how women are so flattered for attention, for any attention, even if it’s a sweaty drunk attention. Where as I was taught at a very young age to value myself more, just as myself, not as a religious thing, not as anything but just as yourself, just be careful with yourself. BE careful who you give yourself to, romantically, physically, or even emotionally Sarah: I was wondering, so how do you write your songs? Do you sit down and write them or does it takes weeks and you come back to it? Jewel: You know I always wrote, like when I wrote Pieces of You, really accidentally. It was like a creative adventure. YWMFM clip plays again Jewel: I didn’t think I was a song writer. I wrote WWSYS at your age, when I was 16. And now that I’m touring all the time, picking up my guitar is harder. Sarah: Well you obviously know a lot about the Everyday Angels, the group on the internet. I was kinda wondering do you consider them more than just the fans? Jewel: I was really freaked out about the whole "fan thing ".I remember talking to my mom about it.....my moms my manager....I'm like--"I don't know about this...."--'cause I was never like that. But I get inspired by people, so I decided I'm going to try to inspire people & NOT have them idolize me. Sarah: You stared performing very young with your family. Do you have anytime that you remember great or sticking out? Jewel: I remember the first time I got up on stage, I would wear leader hoes and I had really long hair and it was braided, (laughing), I would get so nervous and would laugh in the middle or just get the hiccups. (yodels with hiccups) Sarah: So how did you career change over the time as a performer? Jewel: I think that if I hadn’t spent all those years bar singing with my dad, I didn’t think I could’ve toured solo like I did. You know opening up for those people, Peter Murphy, The Ramones, or Everclear in front of 20,000 kids, if I hadn’t had all those years singing experience. “You will listen and I will get you damn it!” You know? Sarah: Thank you, really for everything you’ve done for everybody. I mean, really, really it’s cool. You may have not realized it yet but you have really inspired so many people and make a difference, especially in my life. Jewel: No embarrassing the artist. She was placed in front of a white background and she is wearing a brown top. They showed a clip and it was really cool because when she would say certain words they would fade onto screen. The poem reading was very beautiful. It really envokes the essence of the words. Unlike the talk shows she's been on which she looks down at the book in between stanzas. It looked like she memorized it and looks directly to the camera. VH-1 said they will be showing one poem reading a night at 12am. So I guess VH-1 and MTV will be broadcasting it. The news clip also interviewed her on the set of the poem reading and showed the filming of it. I didnt tape it. The bad news is that we haven't a clue what happenned with the MTV spots. For those confused, heres the deal on these spots: On May 19th, Jewel went into MTV studios & recorded 10 "poetry spots" to be broadcast at a later date. One thats popped up more often than most is due to a high school yearbook photo of Jewel thats circulated everywhere. In it her name is spelled Juel Kilcher. The common explanation about this is that she simply was playing around with the spelling as many kids that age do. Today, while cataloguing some Kilcher archive materials, I found a Swiss newspaper article dated from the late 1930's when Jewel's grandfather Yule was scouting out Alaskan land to immigrate to. What jumped out at me was the spelling of his name---yep, Juel Kilcher. So, it may or may not have any bearing on the common answer to that yearbook photo question, but that was the original Swiss spelling of Yule's name. I've since been told that he changed the spelling after founding the Homer Homestead & beginning a new life in Alaska in the 1940's. This reminds me of something that needs to be said. I know we have many new folks subscribing lately & many of you are understandibly confused. There's an excellent enjoyable way to eleviate a lot of "new EDA" confusion.
