The original transcription was from the very first version of it that Jewel sang during the October 97 Europe Tour. It's developed & is a bit more refined, now. There's a very good chance this will be included on Jewel's new album. Here's the updated lyrics for your enjoyment. MrBB "Winter Song" by Jewel Kilcher (Originally written 10/97. This updated transcription is from the 2/98 version included in the RS documentary) Turn to me with frozen lips Your hands are icy cold Your eyes burn bright Against the frost lit sky You never seemed more lovely than you do tonight Pale on the horizon Like leaves frozen in the snow Two bodies merging seperately Time stands still If its pierced with cold Chorus: The Moonlight hears The Moonlight knows What’s simple is true And I love you Theres a warmth in my heart It haunts me when you're gone Mend me to your side And never let go Time knows nothing We'll never grow cold The Moonlight hears The Moonlight knows What’s simple is true And I love you The twilight descends On our sillouhettes How soon Spring comes How soon Spring forgets I wanna stop time Say "It'll never begin" Old Man Winter be our friend Old Man Winter be our friend The Moonlight hears The Moonlight knows What’s simple is true What’s simple is true And I love you From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Mon Jun 1 21:23:31 1998 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id VAA22462 for jewel-news-outgoing; Mon, 1 Jun 1998 21:23:13 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <199806020123.VAA22462@smoe.org> From: ABershaw@aol.com Date: Mon, 1 Jun 1998 20:38:12 EDT To: jewel@smoe.org Subject: Jewel-News: MrBB-Jewel on CNN Showbiz Today! I can only assume it's also in the printed USA Today newspaper at newsstands across the land. For those that cannot get a newspaper, here's the full article - Mike :-) Poetry shows another facet of Jewel Jewel says she has grown ''bored with music.'' Bored? This is a woman who spent most of her 24 years scraping, suffering and struggling to make it as a musician - growing up in the wilderness of Homer, Alaska; living out of a car; singing in local coffee houses and bars; getting turned down by hospitals when she needed treatment for a chronic kidney problem but didn't have insurance. And then she hit big just three years ago with the album Pieces of You, which has sold more than 6 million copies. ''I exceeded every goal I ever had,'' she says. ''It's like a Datsun pickup winning the Indy 500.'' But for Jewel Kilcher, the fame and the money - even the achievement - are not what's most important, she says. That's how the boredom set in. ''You know how it is,'' she says. ''You need a new challenge. I had been touring a long time. I was good at doing live shows and creatively was being very atrophied.'' So she went through ''the chicken scratch'' in her journals - 15 or so of them from the past eight years - and pulled together a book of poetry. The collection of 109 poems is called a night without armor (HarperCollins, $15), and she will give poetry readings for the next few weeks. ''If you want the most honest glimpse of me,'' she says, ''look at my poetry. I don't exist unless I'm writing. I don't understand daylight or lovers or the world. I need it to deal with hardships in my life. There isn't a day that I can really go without it. Through it, I come to know myself.'' Others may try mind-expanding drugs or they may party wildly, but that has never appealed to Jewel, she says. ''There's a lot of darkness I battle in my own mind. If I were to do drugs or alcohol, it would sink me. I've never been a partier. The idea of distracting myself with a party and losing a year didn't seem attractive to me. . . . I've tortured myself mentally - it doesn't feel good.'' Is she saying she has contemplated suicide? ''Everybody does. There was a time when I was 18 when I was saying 'OK,' . . . but I also had this realization that I didn't want to give up and, damn it, I would figure it out.'' She doesn't want you to think she's to be revered for that. ''I don't think I've gone through anything other people haven't gone through. My feelings are not that original. My expression of them makes them unique. We all have lust, loneliness and insecurity.'' Not all of us use poetry to understand our lives, however. ''It taught me to be human,'' says Jewel, who after high school graduated from an art school in Michigan. ''I'd read a lot of philosophers. I learned to reason . . . but they didn't teach me how to relate or understand love.'' A lot of the poems are love-related. She won't say that they are about particular men, only that there are ''little cryptic notes'' that only they might get. One of her best friends is Flea (Michael Balzary) of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Other than that, she had a French-Canadian model for a boyfriend for a while and she dated Sean Penn. She's ''in between relationships right now.'' Asked what she looks for in a man, she says, ''To tell you honestly, I feel like men come to me.'' Men like Jean-Claude Van Damme, with whom the tabloids had her linked? She laughs. ''God, I've never even met him! My fans are like, 'Please say that's not true!' '' And she says it's not. ''I spent a lot of my life alone, which isn't sad to me. I move emotionally a lot. I outgrow things quickly. I'm more committed to my growth than to staying with friends.'' Her mother is her best friend. ''She has always been my twin,'' says Jewel. Her parents divorced when she was 8; she went with her mom. ''She has encouraged me to be my highest and never stall my growth to fit in.'' Where that growth might lead, say, in 10 years, she has no idea. ''Wherever God places me.'' Married with children? ''I'm still too young to think about that. Men have wanted to marry me and it's just not for me. I'm sure it will be one day.'' She's still dealing with fame. ''I see why it destroys a lot of people. I have incredible people around me who know my goals spiritually. I also knew why I got into music - to help people. I've never had to compromise my integrity. I've never worried about being cool or hip. It's allowed me to remain sane.'' But what about looking the part, dressing the part, to be cool or hip? ''I've always looked at magazines; they make me anxious. As a kid and to this day, everybody's so beautiful and perfect. It made me feel like there's an insurmountable gap between them and me. Now that I'm in them and people are commenting on me, it's very ironic. I think the images and standards we have of beauty are unrealistic. I think the idea that a woman feels flattered when she's complimented on her beauty is archaic.'' So she doesn't worry about her weight? ''Of course I do!'' she says. ''I don't know a girl that doesn't. I'm committed to trying to be healthy. You go through premenstrual munchies and feel bloated as heck and go in front of a camera, and people are cruel. I'm committed to being in front of people and not being perfect.'' She continues, ''It always encouraged me to see Meryl Streep or Bette Midler or Isabella Rossellini, people besides Kate Moss, who are beautiful, to give me some hope. It's so hard to love ourselves. I know so many young women who don't know their worth. I don't want to look back and feel embarrassed knowing I've squandered the opportunity of living on being self-absorbed.'' She also says it's premature to look back and call her one of the Women in Rock, the phrase that became so popular during last summer's Lilith Fair concert tour. ''I feel like a pup,'' she says. ''I feel like Janis Joplin and Joni Mitchell and Ella Fitzgerald were the real deals. I still have to prove myself.'' She adds, ''It's not like we suddenly began to exist when Lilith started. It's been kind of a catch phrase. Personally I don't like being a 'Woman in Rock.' I'm a brain, I'm a mind. I'm a person. I'm a poet.'' And to fans who worry that her boredom remark means she's no longer a musician, don't worry. ''My love of music doesn't change,'' she says. ''I love the immediacy of music and its ability to affect people. I'll be doing another record as soon as I'm done with the film.'' The film is Ride With the Devil, directed by Ang Lee and filming through July. She's also writing - prose - for another book. And she's forming a charity. ''I care deeply for people. I'm inspired by people like Martin Luther King who knew you could not fight the enemy by despair. ''Helping people is such a trite little summary. In my own life, I've felt deeply many things, intense loneliness, intense worries for survival, and there's people that go through worse daily. It's not OK for me to just be breathing. It's not OK for me just to get by. ''I want to do with my life what is worthwhile. I think in the end, kindness matters. People understanding their own beauty and divinity matters. Whatever career I'm in, it has to be toward those goals.'' To: jewel-news@smoe.org Subject: Jewel-News: Jewel in August "Guitar One" Magazine Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk June 2, 1998 I haven't been keeping up with my list postings, so I don't know if this has been reported yet, but Jewel is featured as part of an article entitled "Ascent of the Woman: An Inside Look at 10 Chart-Topping Ladies," a cover story in the August issue of Guitar One Magazine. There's a b&w picture of Jewel on the cover (an old one), and two pictures inside (page 56: alone, in a yellow jacket; and page 58: standing, with Sheryl Crow). In addition, POY is pictured on a "time-line" called "Women in Time: A Chronology of Significant Recordings," which includes 22 recordings starting in 1971 with Janis Joplin's "Pearl" and ending with Natalie Imbruglia's "Left of the Middle." (POY is incorrectly pegged into 1996, and I, for one, would have had a much different list.) The portion about Jewel is brief and has nothing that isn't common knowledge to EDAs. The text: "WHO: Jewel Kilcher took her organic upbringing and masterfully translated it into the ultimate major label debut: Many of the tracks off of "Pieces of You" feature nothing but her finely tuned vocal chops and delicate acoustic guitar work. Jewel grew up in Homer, Alaska in a house that -- among other missing amenities -- had no shower and no TV (the only bathroom was outdoors -- a freezing-cold outhouse). Her parents offset their homestead's lack of modern conveniences by playing music and singing around the house. From the age of six, Jewel performed alongside her singing/songwriting parents on stage and on the road, yodeling up a storm as a featured part of her parents' set. Unfortunately her parents later divorced, but Jewel kept her musical flame burning bright by touring with her father, singing in bars and restaurants over the next seven years. MAKING MUSIC: ‘After my parents got divorced, I started writing poetry a lot because I didn't always know how to express myself. That, to me, is the real beauty of writing: It makes you more intimate with yourself.' TURNING POINT: ‘Despite my surroundings, I felt a lot of social pressure to figure out what I was gonna do with the rest of my life. I had no desire to go to college, but I also felt no peace in traveling or just bumming around. I got a number of dead-end jobs; got fired a couple of times. I was frightened and a little depressed. The idea of spending my life in a nine-to-five job made me feel trapped and hopeless. My two years [at Interlochen Fine Arts Academy] were a turning point. I saw a bigger world. I immersed myself in everything -- drama, dance, sculpture, music.' ON THE ROAD: ‘One of my favorite things to do is sit and watch people walking by. I remember the details of what people look like -- their expressions, their posture, their words. I make up their lives to be tragic or boring or brilliant or normal.' Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hi all, I hope everyone enjoyed THE REAL Jewel chat on AOL tonight. Much better than the "fake chat with Jewel & me" that two AOL members created Saturday night, huh? ;-) Here's some relevant info on how to protect yourself in the future from some of the fraudulant activities that have gone on lately on AOL. As many of you know, on AOL, theres been several people that have victimized EDAs over the past year or more with lies, fraudulent email forwards from Jewel & basic harrassment. Some EDAs have been contacted by one AOL member that "claims to be Jewel's friend". He fraudulently claims that he can forward Jewel messages. He also sends these EDAs fraudulent letters from Jewel in a pathetic attempt to convince them of his friendship with her. It is now known that the same individual was also responsible for the fake AOL Jewel chat last Saturday night, where one person impersonated Jewel & his co-conspirator impersonated me. AOL management, in conjunction with Jewel's management has already taken steps & these offensive situations will soon be history, at least on AOL. A system has also now been set up to help eliminate these "fraudulent situations" in the future, as well. If the above situations are familiar to you, here's what you can do: All EDAs that recieve(d) emails "supposedly" from Jewel are now encouraged to forward them immediately to: FakeJStop@aol.com. This also applies to chatrooms. If you are (or were) in a EDA chatroom & someone claimed to be Jewel or me, please copy the offending chat & email it to FakeJStop@aol.com. This mailbox will be monitored by Jewel's & AOL management & all "AOL TOS violations related to Jewel" will be taken care of immediately. You are still encouraged to fill out TOS reports, but at least take the time to do the above. You'll be helping to prevent others from being the next victim. For those who are in the dark about these things, heres what occurred this weekend. Two people were in aol chat rooms inpersonating both Jewel & myself. They replaced the "W" at the end of my screen name with 2 "V" 's(example: ABershavv), thus making it look similar enough to my name to fool unsuspecting Jewel fans. A similar thing was done with Jewel's name replacing the "W" again with two "v"s (example: JevvelJK). For future reference, I want everyone to be 100% aware that I NEVER go in chat rooms. I've not been in ANY chat room in over a year! Those who know me well, know theres a good reason why I never go in chat rooms & thats because I type with one finger & am completely useless in chat rooms. (I type so damn slooooow, the topic would change 5 times before I could answer anything!) Also, Jewel NEVER, I repeat NEVER logs onto aol to chat. The only exception is during pre-announced officially advertised events such as the AOL Live Arena tonight. There is absolutely no situation where she will ever be online chatting out of the clear blue. Once in a blue moon, BiBi may be online on Jewel's account, but even then she will not be in a chat room. So....Bottom line is that Jewel or myself will NEVER be in a chat room. PERIOD. No exceptions. If someone in a chat room claims to be either one of us, they are FAKES, not to be trusted & you should forward the "chat text" to FakeJStop@aol.com. From time to time, there will be people who fraudulently claim to be Jewel. Expect this & don't fall for thier pathetic attempts to get your attention. Remember this & from now on, if ANYONE claims to be either one of us in an AOL chat room, "supposedly" sends you an email from Jewel or is offensive to you, REPORT IT! If you've already been a victim of these people, you are welcome to send any information to the above address as well. Jewel's management has gotten AOL management to take this situation very seriously & the offending parties will soon be history, at least on AOL. And to the offending parties who I hope are reading this & laughing: Try to retrieve your "fake screennames" & have a nice day! :-) All the best, MrBB From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Thu Jun 4 03:25:46 1998 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id DAA08530 for jewel-news-outgoing; Thu, 4 Jun 1998 03:25:10 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <199806040725.DAA08530@smoe.org> Date: Wed, 3 Jun 1998 23:23:30 EDT From: ABershaw@aol.com To: jewel-news@smoe.org Subject: Jewel-News: MrBB-Chat Text Request/Poetry CD/Final Luecadia Andres Condon gig Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hi all, Can someone please post the entire AOL Live Chat text for non AOL EDAs to read? There was a small note in the British Times yesderday (satarday) about ANWA: Singer has her say Her debut album sold nine million copies, but Jewel seems to crave respectabitilty as a poetess. The singer-songwriter from Alaska, just 24, was praised on the publication of her first book of verse, A Night Without Armour. Her poetry is unlikley to win comparisons with Sylvia Path, but it has poignancy. In Camoflage, she writes: "A gay man is sitting in a hotel lobby smoking on a cigarette/ He stomachs my breasts dutifully like spinich or lima beans or other things that make one sick/ because he fears rednecks at the bar are on to him." Sorry, it's not much. It also came with a small photo of her from the last Grammies. For those confused, although the show is being taped in Chicago today, it will not be broadcast until Monday June 22nd. You'll need to check your local listings for exact times & channels in your area. The plan for this show is to divide it up into three major segments. The first segment will concentrate on Jewel's music & SHE WILL PERFORM. The second segment will concentrate on her poetry & ANWA. Quite likely she'll read a few poems as well as discussing the role writing plays in her life. The 3rd segment will feature both Jewel & Lenedra together discussing thier relationship & various plans for the future. As we all know, plans sometimes change, but thats the basic idea/layout for The Oprah show. Considering the entire hour will be devoted to Jewel, this should be quite a nice show with something for everybody. This will also be the first major TV appearance for Lenedra, who usually stays behind the scenes, but is really Jewel's partner in everything, as well as being her mom & manager. If any EDAs actually attend the taping today, please post & let others know how it went! The format changed somewhat but Jewel did perform & read poetry, etc. Unfortunately the broadcast date has been officially scheduled for JULY 22nd & not June 22nd as previously intended. Everyone involved is trying to get this moved up to an air date in June, but as of right now its JULY 22nd. If this gets moved up (& I hope it will), you'll be the first to know. :-) Also, knowing The EDAs are some of Jewel's most intelligent & thoughtful fans, Jewel's management are interested in the EDAs opinions on how best to improve live Jewel chats in the future. Jewel: Hi! TVGEN: Let's get right to the questions! Pinky_72: What made you decide to write a book of poetry? Jewel: I've always written poetry before I wrote songs. So it just seemed natural. Also, in pop music I began to feel the media portrayed me to the public more than I had a chance to. And so the book allowed me to portray myself. Sillyk0ne: Can you explain the title of your book? Jewel: I think sometimes the strongest you can possibly be is the most open. And that if you protect yourself with armor in certain places emotionally it shows people where you are most vulnerable. So it's a play on words. And also in poetry I'm the most naked, or revealed, as I am in any art form. Giofreddo: Are you going to use your poetry as lyrics for your new songs ?? Jewel: I steal lines here and there. Katie_R98: Where do you usually get your inspiration from? Jewel: Umm, hmmm. I guess the more I live, the better I get at having my inspired moments last longer until they finally run into each other. And hopefully in time, I'll just live inspired. Many things inspire me. PoisonSkittles: Who do you admire? Have any of these people influenced you poetry? Jewel: I admire my mother as a mentor. And she doesn't inspire specific poems as much as she inspires where the poems come from. She invests in me as a human which makes my poetry richer. INSOMNIA0217: When do you write poems? Jewel: All the time. Cbaldrey: Do you have your own favorite poem, published or not? Jewel: I don't know how to pick one. 8itgreat: Which do you prefer as an art: music or poetry? Jewel: They are just different. Luckily I can do both. If I want to express my own private thoughts, poetry is the most immediate. Derrick70: Jewel, why did you decide not to include the last few verses of "As A Child I Walked" in your poetry book? I'm thinking of the version you recited at Jewelstock. Thanks, Derrick Jewel: Derrick, hi. I just felt it ran on too long. And I felt that it said the same thing in the first verse and then kind of ran on. And also so freaks like you would notice and write about it! Ha ha! Weiner42: When is your next album coming out? Jewel: Hopefully November. Ophelia_swims: How is there any one place where you write your poems, or does it not really matter? Jewel: It doesn't really matter. JennM_1234: Are you really judging that on-line poetry contest? Jewel: Yeah, I'll see the final entries. Sillyk0ne: Do you have any plans for releasing future books of poetry? Jewel: Yes, definitely. My next book will include more prose and short stories, I think. Katerina_17: Jewel, I want to become a singer and poet, how do I get started? Jewel: Just be one. I never meant to do what I do, I just did it. I think when you are something, you just are it. Like Bukowski said, "If you are a writer you write." Just get good at your craft. J_mciver: Is there a specific style or scheme that you use in all your poetry Jewel: No. I try to be varied. Tristan_123: Jewel, are you interested in acting?? In movies or anything like that? It would be great to see you in a movie. Jewel: I'm doing a movie called Ride With The Devil. The director is Ang Lee. And I've been shooting for three months. I guess I have the female lead. Starbrite_83: Are your poems written for yourself or are they dedicated to people? Jewel: Umm, I guess both. I use poetry to help me understand my life, my emotions, the world I live in. I understand things better when it's in ink. There are poems that are specifically about or for people. And others are just observations. Rebo87: Jewel, when did you start writing? Jewel: When I was six or so. I didn't really keep track of it until I was 15. Count_Von_Spielberg: Do you read much poetry; and if so, who are your favorite poets? Jewel: Neruda, Rilke, Bukowski, Shakespeare, to name a few. Ral_34: Jewel, you were excellent in "The Wizard of Oz!" Will you being doing any Broadway in the near future? Jewel: I've thought about it. It's very time-consuming. And I fear the repetitiveness of the long runs would find me thoroughly bored after a month. I have more interest in writing one. The_Rusch: Is there anyone you want to collaborate with? Jewel: I'd like to collaborate with other art forms, modern dance and visual arts. I haven't thought about exactly who yet. Mouse6_7: Is there any chance of you writing a poem/song about THIS experience? Jewel: I suppose. Milt0506: When do you write the best poetry? When you're happy or sad? Jewel: Oh, heck! Well, I used to write out of severe need when I was upset. And it's been a challenge to write when I'm happy. It's much more difficult to articulate beauty. And I'm realizing that it is a more deserving challenge, because pain writes itself. Saron11: I've noticed your poetry and music are incredibly personal--you seem to let us into some of your most private moments. Did you have any qualms about allowing that much of yourself to be released the public? Jewel: No. I've never thought that what I feel is that unique. We all feel lust or alone or proud...there's really no topics that are that original here. And I think that the more honest we are, the more we learn how to be human. And as I was putting this book together, I thought about the books that really affected my life and my growth, and they were always the most honest ones that didn't censor themselves, like Anais Nin or Bukowski. Barabbus: Do you like writing more about the present time or about your past? Jewel: Both. I like writing literally and fictionally. It's all good. Good fun. JakeTrout24: Have you ever gone back to complete and finished poem and added something else in? Jewel: Yeah. The poem called Compass was completely different. The opening line was towards the end originally I think. And I like it much better now. DevilishlyCute: What is your favorite hobby? Writing or singing? Jewel: All of these either-or's! I guess all of them. I like surfing and horse riding. I love silence. I like just sitting quietly. Omnicow: Do you ever write on your own to make yourself feel better? Jewel: That's all I do! It's always been very, very personal. I never thought that I was a writer or that people would actually see it. It just helped me through my day. And then people started calling me a writer! But it was an accident. Alleyed: Did any of your songs start out as poems? Jewel: "Foolish Games". Not many. Ace1st_98: Do you plan on doing any book tours for your book? Jewel: It's been hard between the movie and the time pressure that I'm under to get the album out so soon. I might do one or two dates. But it's hard to get the time unless I postpone my album a year. Nicotine_Patches: Do you carry a sketch book/writing book with you wherever you go and just jot down your thoughts as they come to you?! Do you also collect eclectic things as objects to help you remember the place that you visited and the people that you met?! Jewel: The first part, yes. I do carry a journal, or blank writing book with me wherever I go. My writing is my luggage, my photographs and my memorabilia. I can go to it and have a very specific description of what the weather was like and what its effect on me was. But other than that I tend not to pack much stuff around. I like to travel light. Tristan_123: Jewel, do you read a lot of books? Like novels and such?? Jewel: Yes. Avid reader. Sara18_: i have a 2 year old daughter that loves your music so much and won't go to bed without listening to you first. How does it make you feel that through your music and poetry you can have such an effect on people, even the really young ones? Jewel: I think it's the biggest compliment. I do this for people and myself. It's my goal. So to know that it works makes me suffer the record business easier. PeaceBabe98: Do you ever do any sketches or paintings to accompany your poems? Jewel: Yes. I used to study visual art in high school. I did marble carving and worked with pastels a lot. But my ability to do that on the road is very limited. So now I just do sketches in ink. Laprosa: Jewel, do your recent travels inspire your writing? Jewel: Yeah. Poems in the book like "Taipai", "1B", "Las Vegas", all those things are from touring. Jewel: No. I find poetry easier just because I've done it longer, and I still struggle with the guitar to get what I hear in my head out of my hands. My hands aren't very mature. Graham__: Can you suggest any books to us (not necessarily of poems)? Jewel: Let me think for a second. Nabokov's short stories. What else do I really love? A biography on the last Russian Czar, I can't remember the title. And Rilke's love poems to God. That's a good start. Deztiny_98: Are you writing something at the moment? Jewel: All the time. I write like five or ten poems a day usually. Boxergirl_5: For your book, did you ask any people to suggest what poems should be published? Jewel: Just my mom. My boyfriend, my best friend, but other than that, not really. Buffy_The_People_Slayer: Out of the, say, five or ten poems that you write a day, how many are you actually satisfied with? Jewel: It varies. I find that as I get better at writing, the number goes up. Chepechat: What Neruda poems do you like best and why? Jewel: That's an essay question! I like a lot of his political poems, no title specifically, his love poems, like "Your Breath Is Enough", is a very pretty poem. EricaLT: What do you do for fun? Jewel: LOL! My work is fun. It takes up all of my time. I horseride. But I think the best part is that I like my work. I'm not always looking to escape it. Sunkiss737: Who are your role models (alive or dead)? Jewel: My mom. Anybody that lives bravely. Whether it's everyday heroes - people that don't compromise what they know to be true. Twig800: Do you like Shakespeare's plays as well as poetry? Jewel: Oh, yeah. I love all writing. I LOVE Ibsen. I love his plays. Salinter: Will your new album differ from the first stylistically? Jewel: This record is going to be a theme record. I have six weeks to do it. So it's not going to be too complex. I'm putting it out for Christmas. It will be different. But I haven't done it yet. We'll see. Jungle_B0Y: What is an average work day like for you? Jewel: It varies. When I was touring, you get up at 6:00 a.m. Fly somewhere. Do four, five or six interviews, or in-stores. Then do a gig, drive five hours, get up, do it again. Now in a movie, it's much more stable. Snowgold: Is the audio book of A Night Without Armor available on CD? Jewel: Yes. It is. Should be available where the books are available, as well as in record stores, I hope. SKiDaMtS_EDA: What is your part in the movie? Jewel: The part of a 19-year-old Civil War widow. Laughing_in_yellow: Will your write any songs for the soundtrack to Ride With The Devil?? Jewel: Might do one. It's a period piece, so they won't use contemporary music. But I wrote a song for my character and they're thinking about using it. Angel2001_: How do you feel about being such a role model and inspiration? Jewel: I don't mind. I don't know. I don't think about it. I think we all inspire each other. My main concern is in living justly, because I have to face myself daily as well as at the end of my life. And I want it to have been spent bravely, and in service to others. I want to kind of be my own role model, too. Dgallant: Is it easier, harder or indifferent to write poetry or lyrics Jewel: About the same. Poetry has less limits, it doesn't have to rhyme, it doesn't have to be three minutes, so it's easier for me in a way. Cougar5014: What is it that you want to accomplish in the future? Jewel: Creatively, there are a lot of things I'd like to move into. I'd like to work more in classical music. I'd like to dance again. I'd like to be saucier, a cook. Personally, which is what really matters, I want to be able to help more people, to improve the quality of lives. The rest is sort of entertainment. I don't really get to enjoy my success if we're not all successful. I think everybody deserves to make a living, and to enjoy what they do. I'd like to facilitate that if I can. BluEydMermaid: Is it true you studied opera? Jewel: Somewhat informally, yes. I skipped all my voice lessons and showed up for recitals. EDA_rob_d: What is the topic of the Oprah show that is being taped tomorrow going to be? Jewel: Me! I don't know! It airs the June 22. LIST MODERATOR NOTE - this has since been corrected to July 22nd, with a possible change moving the date up. Sheldonclyde: Hi Jewel, Sheldon from Winnipeg. Do you plan on incorporating any of your poetry into your live performances? Jewel: I have occasionally. It depends on how attentive the crowd is. Maybe it'll be incentive! Lion_cobra: Do you think your kind of success can be achieved by anyone? Jewel: Yes. In different areas. You know I really consider my success to be not money or degrees of fame. I feel like I won because I do what I love. To me that's success. And I think that that can be accomplished by everyone. God grants dreams. Not record labels. Bloodcousins: Do you prefer to write political poems or love poems? Jewel: Both. Poetry represents life, and life is not one dimensional. Franckx2000: What singers influenced you? Your sound is unique. Jewel: My critics would probably disagree! Ella Fitzgerald to a large degree. Edith Piaf. Jennifer Warren, Kate Bush. Nancy Griffith. Bob Dylan. Ada3579: What kept you going when times were rough and you were trying to achieve success? Jewel: It was my fight. I had a lot to gain and very little to lose. And I believed that I deserved to at least make my living in the world. I didn't have big designs of being hugely famous. So I felt pretty good about every gig. The biggest rush was when people listened, and that was accomplished usually in clubs. Dreamt98: I write poetry, Jewel. You're an influence. I need to know how I can get my ideas on paper better. It seems I usually have a hard time with that. Any advice?? :) Jewel: Just keep doing it. I was the same way, it would come out awkward, clumsy or trite. Also read a lot, the more you're exposed to great writing, the more it effects you by osmosis. Also don't judge your writing. Just write. Sunny_D_siz69: Are there any singers you would like to work with? Jewel: Steve Earle. Bob Dylan. Nina Simone. Jimmy Scott. Elbryan42: How far back (chronologically) do the poems in A Night Without Armor go??? Jewel: Age 15. Not many years. IamJamie29: What is your favorite color pen to write in? or are you a pencil gal? Jewel: Oh, as is typical of a writer, I cannot keep hold of a pen, so I borrow whatever. I prefer pen to pencil. StarlaWink: Jewel, how did you decide to put "We Talk" on the cover of A Night Without Armor? Jewel: I didn't, the guy that did the cover art design just sort of put it in there as a sort of mock test randomly, and it kind of never got changed. Nicoleguest_398d8022: How was it touring with the Lilith Fair ? Jewel: Very fun. I enjoyed everyone a lot. Kristy_bug: How do you deal with writer's block?? Jewel: The only time I have writers block is if I'm judging my writing. My friend Steve Poltz says it's impossible to have writer's block, because you can write anything. You can write "The dog sits on the chair" and you're over your writers block. It's only if you have standards of what your writing should be that it chokes.... So just have fun. Erikpsychmajorr: Jewel, do you consider yourself a pop artist or folk musician or poet? Jewel: Hopefully I'll break the definition. And be all of them. Thanks everybody for such a great attendance. I hope you like the book!! TVGEN: Thanks for being here tonight, Jewel. Don't forget about the Jewel Poetry Contest. Visit http://www.tvgen.com/jewel/. Also Jewel's just-released collection of poetry, A Night Without Armor. Goodnight everyone! Oprah had her on for 3 segments (almost half the show). During segment one Jewel sang an incredibly passionate version (esp. at 9 am!) of "Who Will Save Your Soul." Segment two consisted of chat about her and the ANWA book. Originally, segment three was going to feature Jewel & Lenedra together, but they decided not to do this. Instead, segment three consisted of Jewel reading 2 poems, Oprah reading a poem, and together, they both read 2 poems (alternating stanzas). There's a growing movement on the Internet to bring artists to people's homes. The idea can be traced to a group of 2,500 rabid Jewel fans known as Everyday Angels (EDAs), who maintain a mailing list on the Net. In April, 1997, the singer Cindy Lee Berryhill--a San Diego contemporary of Jewel's--was stuck in Boston with a yearning to perform. Aware of EDA's legions, she contacted a friend, who got word out that Berryhill was looking for a gig. The next day, the singer was performing in a fan's living room for thirty people. Since then, she has played in about sixteen homes, sometimes drawing more than 100 fans, each of whom donates ten dollars. "I won't ever give up clubs," she says, "but it's a great way to connect with people." The "Living Room Tour" trend has spread, and subsequent shows have been held in cities across the country. While many of these artists are local folk singers, higher-profile acts such as Freedy Johnston, Patty Griffin and Steve Poltz have expressed interest. "We're looking at it as a supplement to regular touring," says Michael Pontecorvo, director of artistic development for Poltz's label, Mercury Records. "It's increasingly difficult to get exposure for new artists, but this is a proven method." Poltz, who played one living room with his former band the Rugburns, hopes to do at least six more when his tour begins in July. "I like playing small venues, anyway," he says. "This is about as intimate as it gets..." Funny, he's never had a problem with the top shelf before. I spoke to them fairly extensively as did Steve Poltz & Cindy Lee Berryhill. Fellow listmembers Larry & Mike also were contacted. The writeup came out & is in the current issue (in the "Grapevine" section). Cindy Lee Berryhill just read it to me over the phone & it seemed to reflect a positive light on the LRT scene. They did condense it into a few paragraphs, but at least we managed to get Steve Poltz, Cindy Lee Berryhill, Patty Griffin & The EDAs some Rolling Stone exposure. :-) I'd post the writeup for you but I don't get Rolling Stone & don't actually have a copy. Perhaps someone who does subscribe to it can post it for others (& so I can have a copy ;-) All the best, MrBB From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Thu Jun 18 09:12:46 1998 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id JAA05785 for jewel-news-outgoing; Thu, 18 Jun 1998 09:12:37 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <199806181312.JAA05785@smoe.org> Date: Tue, 16 Jun 1998 10:16:22 -0400 From: Allan To: jewel@smoe.org Subject: Jewel-News: Jewel Book Contest.... Many more responded over the past few days & a very clear pattern was noted. "What would that pattern be?" you ask. Well... it's pretty obvious that most EDAs enjoyed the chats, but had two items of constructive criticism that were common. Those 2 items were: 1) With so many people online (& the AOL moderator asking far too many questions himself), few EDAs were able to even ask Jewel a question. 2) The questions asked of Jewel, were not that interesting to many EDAs who already knew most of the answers. Better & more interesting questions should have been asked. So.....Jewel would enjoy doing something special for the EDAs to address both of the above concerns. :-) Although, her website does not currently have chat technology, this is something they'll be working on for the future. Hopefully, "Special EDA-Invite only" chats will take place where a password sent out to the EDAs will let you participate sometime in the future. This is still a ways off & like I said, Jewel wants to address your Online Chat "feedback" & do something special for The EDAs NOW. So...Since she'll be wrapping up her movie in a few weeks & then heading back into the studio to record her new album, Jewel wants to take some time the week before the Jewelstock Anniversary (3rd weekend in July) to answer those burning EDA QUESTIONS. This experiment will work like this, for this 1st time around: The EDAs can come up with 20 questions that they, AS A GROUP deem the most important or interesting questions. I will forward the questions to Jewel. She'll pick 10 (or more if she has the time) & she'll answer 2 per day the weekdays prior to the 2nd Bearsville Reunion/Jewelstock Anniversary (July 17th through the 19th). NOW, here's the part all of you must figure out calmly & intelligently-- The EDAs can ask Jewel ANY 20 questions. WHAT ARE those more intelligent, better questions you wished EDAs had been given the opportunity to ask? What is it that the EDAs really want to know? IMPORTANT!! READ ON! PLEASE, DO NOT HIT REPLY! I personally cannot collect these questions & decide what's important to The EDAs (& I'm not comfortable doing so, anyway). So, YOU (as a group) will decide with the help of a selected panel of volunteer EDAs who will deem which ones will become the "Official EDA Question" possibilities. This must be done cooperatively as a list community. Since Mike Connell, your trusty list manager, knows more people on the list than anyone, he is going to pick the six panelists from the group of EDA volunteers. By Monday evening, the panel will be in place & ready for all EDAs to submit their ONE question to the panel. (Instructions will be posted at THAT time where to send your question. So be thinking up a good one in the meantime!) If you can devote a couple of hours or so a day/night to this panel (from next Monday to maybe next Friday) & would enjoy it, please volunteer by sending an email TO Mike (NOT ME!) with "20Q" in the subject line to: Ducksoup@spectra.net You are also welcome to explain why you'd like the job if you like, but it's not necessary. During this project next week, Mike will post some of the best questions each night to the Jewel lists (in one post) so all can see what's going on & read some of those incredibly intelligent questions. :-) The 6 member panel's job will be to take all the submitted questions and narrow them down to 30 to 40 questions, which will then be submitted to the Jewel lists for a vote. Details on this vote will be posted at THAT time, please do not ask questions about it now. (Personally, I think the coolest questions will simply rise to the top on general consensus.) I have every confidence that this CAN be done peacefully & cooperatively if you all calmly work together. That is crucial to the success of this experiment. So here's the 5 steps the EDAs will be accomplishing in the next week or so, hopefully: 1) Those who wish to volunteer for the 6 member panel are to NOW email Mike at ducksoup@spectra.net with "20Q" as the subject. 2) Mike will select the EDA Panel from the volunteers by Monday evening. 3) Sometime Monday the EDAs will get instructions on where/how to submit their questions to Jewel. Only ONE question per person please! :-) 4) This trusted panel will pick the best EDA questions & help to narrow it down to 30 or 40. These will be submitted to all for a vote, hopefully by next Friday. Voting instructions will be posted then & the 20 best questions will be selected. 5) Those 20 questions will be sent to me by July 1st (in approx 2 weeks) & I will give them to Jewel. The 20 questions must be agreed on by the panel & voting done, with all 20 questions submitted to me no later than JULY 1st. I will give them to Jewel & she'll answer 10 (or more) of them when she gets breaks over the following two weeks. The questions & Jewel's answers will be posted all week from July 12th through the 16th (probable dates). If there ever was an issue that deserved total focus of the lists, I would say, this is the one! PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, DO NOT JUST HIT REPLY TO ME. SEND YOUR IDEAS & INPUT TO YOUR FELLOW EDAS at Jewel@smoe.org ONLY!!!!! (Your actual questions to Jewel are to be submitted per instructions that will be posted early next week :-) This is an opportunity for The EDAs to let Jewel know what's most important/interesting to them. If you all come through & make this a cool experience for each other (& Jewel), she'll be more open to doing this again periodically & getting special EDA chats happening in the future. If I may interject one opinion (that you are free to consider or ignore) it would be to think carefully what you ask Jewel. What you ask reflects on all EDAs so I'd use this opportunity to get to know Jewel better & not waste it asking FOR things, such as Jewelstock2 or special favors. Of course, this is totally up to you all & I will forward whatever is deemed best by the EDAs. As most of you know, Jewel does appreciate the EDAs & to prove it, she's trying to give you both things that you asked for regarding the chats: 1) EDAs getting to ask some questions 2) Better/more intelligent questions Now its up to you to deliver on your end. I'll be out of town again & unable to assist you all during most of this. Mike, will be sending on further instructions to the lists periodically. Remember to help him get this together. And above all, keep this FUN for everyone & be thoughtful of others during this project. OK? Cool. Now get to it! Panelists volunteer to the address posted above & the rest of you start figuring out what The EDAs would like to ask her. Jewel will answer. :-) MrBB *************************************** NEW To the Jewel lists? She owned a farm, a youth-hostel and a bed-and-breakfast, she also gave horse rides to tourists. In Homer, I met tons of kids who were just looking for places to pitch their tents for three or four dollars a night. And there were lots of college kids who came to Homer to work for the summer-we called them spit rats, because they lived in a tent city out on a spit of land. I'd ride my horse down there a lot and sort of meet people along the way. You know, when you're sixteen, hanging out with people in their twenties who had already been through college really opens up your mind. They'd turn me on to books to read; we'd talk about traveling. It really keeps you from being prejudiced at a very young age. Homer was filled with travelers. I'd meet people from all over. I had friends from Chile and Guatemala, Puerto Rico, Australia, and New Zealand. Those people turned me on to alot of different languages, religions and different way of thinking. Summer was always a good education. There you go folks. By the way to those of you who knew me as jkfan@yahoo.com this is now my new email address. A NIGHT WITHOUT ARMOR JEWEL Harper Collins/Harper Audio One star out of four (4 stars-Excellent, 3 stars-Worthy, 2 stars-Mixed, 1 star-Poor, Dog symbol-Dog) On this disc (a companion to her 109-poem book), Jewel reads her work like a sixth-grader reciting in front of the class for the first time: stilted. Each letter in every word is emphasized with such exact pronunciation that the delivery lacks any authenticity. The poems are not spoken, they are manufactured from her throat: carefully packaged, consumable, disposable. When in "Wild Horse" she monotones: I'd like to paint my poems with desert tongued clay across your back and ride you savagely as the sweet and southern wind through a green and wild Kentucky There is a dearth of passion and a lack of vocal modulation that is offensive to the listener. To be fair, after 40 poems, Jewel begins a slow roll, and by the 75th poem she actually emotes, but it's too late. Jim Morrison she's not. In the preface to her book, Jewel writes "I've learned that not all poetry lends itself to music...." What she needs to learn is that not all poetry lends itself to publication. ---NOELLE B. Anyway, on to the fun stuff :-) OK folks! :-) As previously announced by MrBB, Jewel has agreed to answer from 10 to 20 questions submitted by members of this list. So, it's now the time to send in your question to Jewel :-) The panel, who will take all the submitted questions and narrow them down so the rest of us can vote for the "best 20" to send to Jewel has been chosen and notified :-) I chose 12 instead of the previously announced intent to choose 6. Now, it's time for you to do your part. Each of you is allowed to submit ONE question you'd like to ask Jewel :-) You MUST send them to ME at my address: ducksoup@spectra.net and please, you MUST have the subject of the email be 20Q All I want you to do is submit the question, and after the question include your first name, last name is not mandatory. (First name isn't mandatory either, but it would be nice if you could include it.) Each day I will submit all of the sent in questions to the panel, who will read them all, and narrow the questions down to 30 or 40 best ones. Those will then be sent to the Jewel lists either late Thursday evening, or sometime Friday, and you all will be able to vote for your favorites so we can send the best 20 on to Jewel, who will then answer 10 to 20 of them in messages which will be sent to this list via MrBB. Instructions on how to vote will be sent then (Friday), so please don't ask me about that now. However I will be able to answer other related questions, if time allows :-) Again, to submit a question for Jewel, send ONE and only one question to ME at ducksoup@spectra.net and PLEASE have only 20Q as the SUBJECT of your question. Please include your name after the question, and please only send a question, please don't add a lot of reasons you want it answered etc, the panel will have enough to read and to do as it is, as I expect up to 200 or more questions to be submitted. Remember, the whole mailing list will be eligible to vote for questions to be asked, so make them good ones!! It is likely the common questions she gets asked a lot and that are easily answered on many web sites won't make it past the panel for a vote. Mike :-) P.S. I will be sending to the loose mail version of the list some of each days' best questions. Feel free to comment on them to the Jewel@smoe.org list. ******** Below are some excerpts from MrBB's post from Friday that announced this project: First, THANK YOU AGAIN to all the EDAs who took the time to reply to Jewel's management with your thoughts on the recent Online Jewel Chats. The EDAs can ask Jewel ANY 20 questions. WHAT ARE those more intelligent, better questions you wished EDAs had been given the opportunity to ask? What is it that the EDAs really want to know? YOU (as a group) will decide with the help of a selected panel of volunteer EDAs who will deem which ones will become the "Official EDA Question" possibilities. This must be done cooperatively as a list community. Since Mike Connell, your trusty list manager, knows more people on the list than anyone, he is going to pick the six panelists from the group of EDA volunteers. By Sunday evening, the panel will be in place & ready for all EDAs to submit their ONE question to the panel. So here's the 5 steps the EDAs will be accomplishing in the next week or so, hopefully. As most of you know, Jewel does appreciate the EDAs & to prove it, she's trying to give you both things that you asked for regarding the chats: 1) EDAs getting to ask some questions 2) Better/more intelligent questions Mike, will be sending on further instructions to the lists periodically. Remember to help him get this together. And above all, keep this FUN for everyone & be thoughtful of others during this project. OK? Jewel will answer. :-) MrBB ******** - * If you are new to the Jewel list and need a helping hand, * The Jewel/EveryDay Angels List Homepage & Guide is at: * http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup * * If you have any list related questions, please feel free * to email me at ducksoup@spectra.net * or you can IM me on either of the AOL names below: * DuckOfPrey or WhyADuck55 on AOL or AOL Instant Messenger From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Mon Jun 22 19:32:07 1998 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id TAA04915 for jewel-news-outgoing; Mon, 22 Jun 1998 19:31:43 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <199806222331.TAA04915@smoe.org> Date: 21 Jun 98 17:31:16 +0100 From: "Chris Groves" To: jewel-news@smoe.org Subject: Jewel-News: ANWA - Billboard review. Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk The following is a short review of A Night Without Armor audio book in the US music newspaper Billboard, dated 20th June 1998... Music stores should do well with this collection of poetry by multi-platinum singer/songwriter Jewel. Audiobooks generally sell about 10% of the volume of their print counterparts, but in this case audio sales are likely to exceed hardcover sales, with Jewel's familiar, vulnerable voice interpreting her words. Predictably for a young star, her poems deal with loneliness on the road with such passages as "I'm told I'm adored by millions/But no one calls" and separation from a paramour. Other themes include love, sex, childhood memories, strangers on the street, and being young and female. They're familiar subjects, but her descriptive power, evocative phrasing, and expressive voice raise the work above mere cliche. Did you ever hesitate in sharing intimacy with other people? JEWEL: At certain times I did, only because since i already am known as a pop singer or song writer, people, I think, will be reading this book looking for clues into my life, which will be disappointing to them and me. A lot of it is just very vivid imagination. And some of it is stories about my childhood or anecdotes, but i think that was the biggest fear on my part, was that people would be very literal with the book. WBR: And is that where you came up with the title, A Night without Armor? J: Yeah. For me poetry is one of the most honest things i can think of doing with myself, it just has no. . .it's never had any pretension with me, it's a very raw emotion. I think if i want to be most articulate and most undiluted and most honest about emotion or any particular situation, I write poetry about it because songs can be clever very easily. WBR: Do you write when you have an idea or do you write as an exercise and ideas come from that? J: It's never really been an exercise. I began to depend on writing at a young age just because my life had gotten hard and it helps me deal with it and I use it as sort of a crutch to lean on. And since then, it's just been a need. I don't exist unless i'm writing. I don't feel comfortable at the end of the day unless i write about what i see. I sort of seem to process the world better that way/ WBR: Do you know then while you're writing if what you're writing is going to be a poem or a song or just maybe some notes in your diary? J: Yeah, it's been always a very naive, almost process for me---the need to get outside of myself, the need to understand what's around me or something. It's a vague thing. I don't know why some are songs and why [some] are poems. They just seem to be very, very different and rarely do they cross over. WBR: How did you choose which poems to include in this book? J: It was sort of. . .all my poetry is handwritten; I haven't yet ventured to the computer, so collecting all this was very archaic. I had to go through books--- about 20 books---that i had handwritten , and pick out poems, and i was doing that between touring. And so there were entire books that were skipped and parts of books got left behind and things like that, so sort of whatever i ended up with and then the best poems out of those. And then the ones i didn't feel like reworking, i just didn't, and it was sort of a nonsensical process. WBR: You're planning a book tour for A Night without Armor. This will be obviously a different kind of touring than you're used to. What do you hope the tour will produce? J: You know, I don't know what to expect from it. I love poetry more than i love music. I just love poetry, and i hope to get a lot of kids into poetry and reading other poets. It should be fun for me. I have no idea; i've never read my poetry to anybody in my life, and now i'm doing a book, which is very odd to me. ** Scott S.** -Big Sexy Angel "LIFE IS A BIG GAME SO YOU GOTTA PLAY IT WITH A BIG VOICE!" http://homepage.usr.com/b/breezemaker ------------------------------ From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Tue Jun 23 19:43:20 1998 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id TAA14703 for jewel-news-outgoing; Tue, 23 Jun 1998 19:43:16 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <199806232343.TAA14703@smoe.org> Date: Mon, 22 Jun 1998 21:20:03 -0400 From: Mike Connell To: jewel-news@smoe.org Subject: Jewel-News: Email list for Lilith Fair '98 on smoe.org - repost :-) Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hi folks :-) Now that Lilith Fair 1998 has started, there's been an increase in the number of posts to Jewel@smoe.org about Lilith Fair. Most have been looking for or selling extra tickets. Jason Gresham had forseen this earlier this year, knowing that many smoe.org lists for the various artists would have similar posts. It seemed these posts needed a home base. Thus was born the Lilith-Fair-Fans@smoe.org list :-) Below is the original post from earlier this spring by Jason. If you are looking for tickets, looking to unload tickets, looking for others to go with and/or discuss any topic about the 1998 Lilith Fair, please join the list per the message below. Mike :-) P.S. Please note that the digest version of this list is set up so that it does not come out very often. They've been averaging about four days to a week between digests, but I feel now that the concerts have started, the list volume may pick up and the digests may come every other day or so. Also, please make the SUBJECT of the email 20Q Many are writing me asking about this summers Living Room Tour news. Yes, things are hapnin' & many gigs will take place. :-) I can't speak for Steve Poltz, because they are co-ordinating their own thing, so more news on that will be forthcoming from them soon, I'm sure. However...... A lot of current planning is being co-ordinated right now for another extensive summer Living Room Tour through the Northeast USA & Canada. As the hundreds who attended any of last years LRT gigs can tell you, it was a wonderful time for all involved. Cindy Lee Berryhill & Elizabeth Hummel really gave special performances that'll never be forgotten. This year, its gonna be another double bill and feature two more incredible woman who will definately mesmerize you live, if youre not hip to them already! The gigs will take place beginning in Chicago (I think), travel East and through Canada & wind up in New England. Dates & locations are still being worked out but it'll take place during August & September. OK, I'll stop toying with you & get to what you really want to know..... I'm extremely happy that this summers LRT will feature both Joy Eden Harrison & Lisa Sanders. I guarantee a great time for all who attend these gigs. Keep an eye out for periodic updates from Duff (TJTalken@aol.com). She's gonna be your one stop LRT INFO Headquarters this summer & will post info periodically, so watch for those & join in if you can. Also, Andres Condon just dropped me a line & he's back in San Diego & will be performing Saturday. If youre in this area & are curious why Jewel & Lenedra like Andres so much, here's another opportunity. I'll simply cut & paste from Andres' message: <> And finally, RUN to the nearest CD store & buy Patty Griffin's new album "Flaming Red" if you haven't already! It's really unbelievable on 1st listen & then just gets better & better & better.... And her version of "Cain" on the Lilith Fair CDs-- Whoa! Below are the 40 questions that the panel of list members came up with to submit to you for a vote (after taking the 117 submitted questions and mulling over them for a few days). Some are sort of common, some were certainly predictable, some are surprising, some are funny, some are thought provoking...a wide variety!!! PLEASE, no complaints about any of the questions, nor if yours did not "make the cut". Let's just go with what we got and pick the 20 out of this lot that 'best' represent the "EDAs questions for Jewel" :-) So, in accordance with Jewel's wishes of the EDAs/list members to send her their "top 20" questions, of which she'll answer at least 10, maybe more (maybe not), I ask of you to please read the 40 questions below, and to then pick TEN that YOU would like for her to answer. What I then need you to do is to send me the numbers of the TEN you like, NOT the questions, just the *numbers* associated with them. I'll tally up the votes, and the top 20 vote getters will be sent on to Jewel :-) Please send your TEN votes to me (in ONE email) at ducksoup@spectra.net with ONLY the word VOTE as the SUBJECT of the email. Do NOT send them to the list please!! :-) Please send them to me :-) I know some will ask this, so I'll answer it here, vote for ten different questions....do NOT vote for any question more than once. DEADLINE TO VOTE!: All votes must be in my email box no later than 4:00 pm Eastern Time USA on Tuesday afternoon, June 30th. To the new folk here, or anyone who has been in the ol' cave the last week, and are lost here....basically, in response to a request from Jewel's management on how to inprove the online chats Jewel partakes in occasionally (two in the last month) many list members wrote the special email address set up for taking replies on this matter. In return, in response to the suggestions that came in, Jewel and her mother/manager Lenedra have given the list the opportunity to come up with a batch of questions for Jewel to answer. Reminder: the deadline to submit your votes for TEN of the below questions is 4:00pm ET USA, Tuesday June 30th :-) Mike The repost: Below are the 40 questions that the panel of list members came up with to submit to you for a vote (after taking the 117 submitted questions and mulling over them for a few days). What I then need you to do is to send me the *numbers* of the TEN you like, NOT the questions, just the *numbers* associated with them. So you have plenty of time :-) I'll post the Top 20 on Wednesday night, along with the vote totals. If you missed it an would like to recieve a copy of the post announcing this "20 questions'" project, just write me and I'll send you a copy. Mike :-) P.S. I know Alan Bershaw has alerted us to Cindy Lee Berryhill's upcoming Living Room Tour performance on July 9 at Venice Beach in Los Angeles. Cindy Lee is appreciative of the support she has received from many of us on this list, and she is offering us (and her fans from her own and a few "select" other email music message lists) a special "command" performance. Her show is in a neat-o loft-like space just steps from the ocean in Venice Beach. She promises a few surprises, and I promise a delightful time. She has asked me to have y'all RSVP to me, for a head count and directions. You can send me an email with your info and location (please put "CLB-RSVP" in the "Subject Line"), or call me at 310/264-8301 during PDT business hours. It would be great to have a healthy and supportive turn-out, as this performance will be a showcase of sorts, as well, for some "industry types." (Please leave all flammable materials at home.) Many are asking me why I've neglected to post anything about it. Well, there's a good reason I've neglected to post anything about it & thats because Jewel never agreed to do it. Once again, its the press jumping the gun, & reporting something with no confirmation from Jewel's management. So...the bottom line is--Jewel will NOT be performing at this gig & I sincerely hope anyone who dished out $40.00 for a ticket without checking on this first, either has interest in the other artists or can get a refund. The various media & websites that have posted info that Jewel will be performing at The Goodwill Games are mistaken. If youre looking for something to do that weekend in the NY area, I suggest checking out The 2nd Annual Bearsville Reunion. This is definately happening & you'll meet a lot of fellow EDAs while experiencing the rush of adrenalin we old-timers commonly refer to as "Dennis Harris". ;-) I won't be able to make it this year, but a good time is guaranteed for you! For more info on this annual EDA event, go to: http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup/bv/bv98.htm Also, here's some miscellaneous other good things coming up around the United States featuring Andres Condon, Cindy Lee Berryhill, Mary Dolan or Steve Poltz.
