I'm going to refrain from a review at this time because it'll be available to everyone soon & I don't want to give too much away. As many longtime Jewel "scholars" know, her poetry has one major difference from her songwriting. That being that her poetry is far more autobiographical & personal than her songwriting. That is definately the case here. By reading "A Night Without Armour", you'll gain a lot of insight into Jewel's thought process, her history, her relationships with her family as well as her thoughts of growing up (& now missing) Alaska. The dust cover on the book itself says it much better than I can, so I'll quote: "Writing poems and keeping journals since childhood, Jewel has been searching for truth and meaning, turning her words to record, to discover, and to reflect. In A NIGHT WITHOUT ARMOUR, her first collection of poetry, Jewel explores the fire of first love, the fading of passion, the giving of trust, the lessons of betrayal, and the healing of intimacy. She delves into matters of the home, the comfort of family, the beauty of Alaska, and the dislocation of divorce. And then there are the images of the road, the people, the bars, the planes, places exotic and mundane, loneliness and friendship. Frank and honest, serious and suddenly playful, A NIGHT WITHOUT ARMOUR is a talented artist's intimate portrait of what makes us uniquely human." Here's an excerpt from the books preface. Jewel says: "I've learned that not all poetry lends itself to music--- some thoughts need to be sung only against the silence. There are softer and less tangible parts of ourselves that are so essential to peace, to openheartedness, to unfolding the vision and spiritual realm of our lives, to exposing our souls. " The book contains 109 poems total, some of which EDAs will recognize, including the Jewelstock poetry. The CD & cassette contains 87 tracks of Jewel reciting these poems, with brief solo acoustic guitar interludes dividing various sections. Here's the ISBN #'s for ordering in advance: Book- Harper-Collins ISBN 0-06-019198-8 CD- Harper Audio CD 10162-2 Cassette- Harper Audio CPN 10162 Jewel dedicates A NIGHT WITHOUT ARMOUR to: The One in Whom we live and move and have or being to my parents, Nedra Carroll and Atz Kilcher to my brothers Shane, Atz and Nikos and to the land which inspires my heart to sing, Alaska For those interested in Jewel's thought process & background, her perceptions of the world around her & especially all of you who collect lyrics & quotes, this will become a treasured resource. All three formats will be available in bookstores May 19th. Talk to ya'all soon. But ya gotta donate to the Smoe drive! :-) Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hey folks :-) Did I say autographed by Jewel door prizes? Yeah.....I did, I'll get to that later. In the mean time, consider yourself cyper-tied to your chair and being forced to read this speil :-) Well, it's been nearly three weeks since I bugged ya about donating to the fund raiser to replace the existing hardware that houses smoe.org with new stuff. For those of you who are new to this particular list and likely don't know me, or didn't read my previous email on this fund raiser, the gist of my first post follows below this second pitch of mine :-) I'll give ya a full report on what we've collected so far. While the amount may sound impressive at first thought, it's really not. Especially when I throw all the figures at you. So far, we've raised nearly half of my/our immediate goal of $3,000 (although I'd be ecstatic at $4,000). We've gotten $1,470.68 However, that total has been contributed by only 67 people, and over half ($865) of it has been contributed by 11 people who gave 40, 50, 100 or 125 dollars. That means the other 56 people have totaled $605, which isn't bad at all for 56 people :-) It's the 67 total donors that is below our expectations, especially when you consider that there are over 9,600 subscriptions to the 44 (yes! 44!) mailing lists hosted at smoe.org, which represents about 7500 separate email addresses/people. I think we can do better than 67 out of 7,500+. I know we can :-) So please, send what you can, whether it be 5, 10 or more....I want to reach that goal of at least $3,000 and would LOVE to see us get $4,000. Remember, Jeff Wasilko, the generous dude that provides these lists free of charge, bought the now 7 year old equipment with his own moola, not to mention he pays the $150+ monthly operating costs (a dedicated ISDN line). The least we can do is pay a major chunk of the cost of the new Sun Sparc station(s) he plans on replacing the present smoe with, before it dies and this all ends for a while. ************************************************************************** DOOR PRIZES DOOR PRIZES DOOR PRIZES DOOR PRIZES ************************************************************************** While it's not many, I did manage to acquire 7 autographed Jewel items, plus a couple of dozen trinkets for door prizes. They will all be *randomly* awarded to people who donate to this cause, no matter what list you belong to. The seven autographed items are (each individualy awarded): a) Two twenty-page, full of pictures, full color Jewel lyric books autographed in gold ink on the front cover. These are the same books that were being sold at last summers' Lilith Fair and Jewel's 1998 Fall Tour. b) Two sets of five 5x7 semi-glossy color photo packs, with the first picture autographed in gold ink. c) Two of Jewel's ten times platinum CD Pieces Of You, with the insert autographed in gold ink. d) This is the top prize, especially to the collectors out there! A brand spanking new autographed in gold ink, RARE promotional CD, commonly known as "Phyllis Barnaby Finally Gets A Bra". It's a 4 track "You Were Meant For Me" promo CD that is pretty much impossible to find now a days. In fact, I myself consider it harder to find than her other promo CD "Save The Linoleum". The 4 tracks are an unreleased version of You Were Meant For Me (known as the Juan Patino version), and three other unreleased tracks Cold Song, Rocker Girl and Emily (although all three have subsequently been released on the vinyl version of Pieces Of You) Again, all seven (plus the trinkets.....Jewel guitar key chains and Jewel guitar pins), will be randomly given away to people who have already donated or donate in the future :-) See below on where/how to donate to help get a new smoe.org and keep these lists running & problem free for a long time to come :-) Thanx, Mike Connell (still ringing that bell) THE GIST OF MY FIRST POST (what the he** is a gist anyway? ;-): Posted in early April: Most of you know me, some don't I'm sure. My name is Mike Connell and I manage the Jewel and Patty Griffin mailing lists at smoe.org. I'm writing you today is to ask for your help in a fund raiser to help keep smoe.org up and running for many more years to come. A gentle bloke by the name of Jeff Wasilko owns smoe.org and has always paid the monthly operating costs (NOT a small penny) and of course had paid for the expensive equipment it presently runs on. He has always offered this service for free since day one....no user fees....no list owner fees...totally free :-) Many rising artists and their fans have benefited from this service, as smoe.org hosts lists for such artists as Happy Rhodes, Paula Cole, Jewel, Patty Griffin, Tori Amos, Thomas Dolby, Poe, Susan Werner, Leah Andreone, Luscious Jackson, Ben Folds Five, the Indigo Girls, Shawn Colvin and many, many more. Some of these once unknown artists, and more to come I'm sure, had their internet presence begin right here at smoe.org :-) For a complete list of which artists have mailing lists hosted at smoe.org, you can go to http://www.smoe.org/lists Jeff is looking into replacing the hardware smoe.org operates on with more modern equipment, as the present units are a pair of seven year old SUN Sparc stations. This is necessary to get newer and better equipment in place before the present system falls down and goes boom permanently, leaving the lists at smoe.org temporarily without a home :-) This would be bad....very bad. This replacement is going to cost a pretty penny. On other list servers this would be no problem, as money would be used from the user fees. However since such fees don't exist here at smoe.org, we are asking for your help in the form of donations. We are not asking for major dollars here, just whatever you can give, whether it be $2, $5, $10, more ....whatever. You can send a check, a money order, or if a buck or two or three if you wish to send cash. If you can't afford anything, don't sweat it, this is NOT mandatory to stay on your list. We are just asking for you to help out if you can. Money orders are a piece of cake. (At least in the USA) They don't have a large fee at all, generally less than a buck, sometimes as low as 35 cents....although money orders from banks usually carry a larger fee (go figure ;-) Your best bet for a money order (in the USA) would be from the US Post Office....all money orders there have an 85 cent fee no matter what the dollar amount of the money order is. *** All checks or money orders should be made out to Jeff Wasilko :-) PLEASE DO NOT MAKE THEM OUT TO ME (Mike Connell) :-) ********************** HOW TO DONATE: ********************** Simple :-) Just send what you want (no Monopoly money please) to me at Mike Connell PO Box 1206 Binghamton NY 13902-1206 and I'll tally up all the figures etc and send it all on to Jeff :-) Remember, please make out all checks or money orders to Jeff Wasilko !!! :-) Please don't make them out to me :-) In your envelope, please include a note that contains your full name, the list(s) you belong to, and your email address you use here at smoe.org (I need to contact you if you win a door prize, and this acknowleges that I received your donation, as I contact you when I get your donation) Please help in this mission to give smoe.org a new home :-) If you have any questions, please feel free to write me and ask. Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hi peeps! :-) Just today I received a major shipment from Dennis Harris of original laser printed J-cards on the original colored paper for the two oustanding Jewel tape sets treed on this list in the past, JewelStock (3 tapes) and Jewel Rocks The Paradise :-) I intend to give them out to anyone who asks, as long as you send a self-addressed STAMPED envelope with your request. (and a note stating what you want) I know many of you have received copies of the tapes these J-cards are for, and/or would like another set of J-cards if you already have originals from the tape tree, so here's your chance and all it's gonna cost you is 64 cents if you live in the USA, more of course if you don't. (just postage both ways, plus envelopes of course) Please note, these J-cards were designed for the normal sized cassette cases, they don't fit those "environment saving" (yeah right!) slim cases that those Sony CD-IT and the newer TDK tapes come in. So if your JewelStock and/or Jewel Rocks The Paradise tapes have slim cases, all you have to do is swap them with the cases you may have that are the normal width. Now, I know (from experience) some of you may not know what the term "J-card" means. A J-card is the paper/cardboard thingy in a cassette case that lists the songs etc. They're called J-card's as they look like the letter J when viewed from the side. So, to get some professional looking ORIGINAL J-cards for these tapes, just send me a self-addressed STAMPED envelope (that means include a stamp/postage on the envelope :) to: Mike Connell PO Box 1206 Binghamton NY 13902-1206 Not knowing what kind of response I'm going to get, for now I'm limiting each request to one of each J-card set. (You can get J-cards for JewelStock AND/OR Jewel Rocks The Paradise but not two of either) If I have a lot left after a few weeks, I'll repeat the offer for anyone who wants a another set. PLEASE include a note stating which J-card(s) you want, and your email address in case I need to contact you, and for (skinny?) pete's sake please remember to include the stamp/postage. I know of more than a few cases in the past on this list where people forgot to send postage. You won't get the J-cards if you don't supply me with a return envelope already filled out with your address and a stamp/postage for the return. This webstore has quite a bit of enjoyable & interesting Kilcher Family info. In the future, it'll also have several other facets including links for connecting to info about homesteading, birds & other areas of interest to Stellavera & various family members. It's important to know that this website is still in the construction stages, but should be more finalized in about a week. The family tree page is being completely redone in the next day or so. You can still visit it now, but you may have some loading problems, etc. It is a secure site, for those ordering via credit card. At present, they can only accept credit card ordering. I spoke to Stellavera about accepting personal checks & they may try to set something up for that later on. Right now, you can only purchase via credit cards. Available for purchase are various family made crafts, jams & jellies as well as Atz(J's dad)Kilcher's 1994 solo album, Yule (J's grandfather) Kilcher's 1977 film "A Pioneer Family in Alaska" , Ruth Marriot (J's grandmother)Kilcher's poetry book & Mossy Davidson Kilcher's 1977 double album. (limited supplies of the original vinyl double album are available as well as a newly remastered single CD version--digitally remastered by yours truly--MrBB. And the single CD does contain all the tracks on both albums. :-) Jewel & Lenedra are not involved in any way with this site, for those who've written me asking. This is strictly a project done independantly by Stellavera Kilcher to promote family projects & other projects that she enjoys and is proud of, as well as helping worthy causes that she & the Kilcher Family supports. 100% of her profits will be donated. All Jewel recordings are the commercial releases, including a few of the soundtracks & POY songbook. That said, I'm very familiar with the recordings, etc, by the various Kilcher Family members. Talent is abundant in the family! As I became friends with Atz & Mossy over the past two years, I became more & more fascinated with the entire Kilcher Family's creative & music-related projects. I thoroughly enjoyed remastering Mossy's albums & found a lot of sweet charm in the material. Yule's film will amaze anyone who enjoys American history or is interested in the homesteading life of previous (to Jewel) Kilcher generations. It's a fascinating portrait of the early pioneer life that Yule & Jewel's grandmother Ruth, blazed in Homer in the 1940's. It includes lots of beautiful homestead & "homestead working" footage & is narrated primarily by Yule himself. Atz's album is his 1994 cassette release, now also newly available on CD. This has been available regionally since 1994 but difficult to find outside Alaska. I know Atz is currently working on another CD for release later this year. Will keep you updated on progress. There's always been a lot of creativity going on within The Kilcher Family & here's the place for those interested to explore it further: http://www.kilcheralaskastore.com/ Direct any further questions regarding the website to the "Feedback" email link on the site itself, please. That's the scoop on the new Kilcher Alaska Webstore. It's EASY! Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hi all, Jennie has been diligently collecting your messages for the birthday card being sent to Jewel from The EDAs. If you have yet to contribute, please read on! It couldn't be easier. You can simply send your BRIEF birthday message to Jennie (instructions below). It can be as simple as "Happy Birthday Jewel" & your name. Do it right now, but: PLEASE DO NOT SIMPLY HIT REPLY TO THIS MESSAGE OR YOUR BIRHDAY MESSAGE WILL GO TO THE WRONG ADDRESS. Here's Jennie with the instructions. Please join in! :-) MrBB Hey guys! Jewel's birthday and the deadline for her birthday card are quickly approaching! Since there isn't much time left, it would probably be a good idea for you to send your birthday wishes for Jewel to me, Jennie via e-mail at: jenniea@expert.cc.purdue.edu I am more than willing to print out your messages and put them onto the card...it will only take you at the most 5 minutes! I am trying my best to vary the fonts of each message so that they all won't just blend together on the card. Please try to keep your messages fairly brief...as in if it doesn't fit on 1 or 1 1/2 screens when you type it up to send to her...it is probably too big! Also, if you are wanting to send your picture to Jewel or your actual signature, please scan them and either post them on your web page and send me the URL or send it to me as an attachment. If you do send a picture or a signature, please try to keep these semi-small, also. I just finished my last final, so I have a little more time to work on this now. But since I am moving back home Saturday morning, I need all e-mail messages by tonight (Friday!). once I am at home I won't be checking my e-mail nearly as often as I do now. We are up to 90 messages as of now (Friday, 2PM), but we still need more! Thanks and please send her your messages ASAP! Again, the email address to have your brief message included in Jewel's EDA Birthday card is: jenniea@expert.cc.purdue.edu Jennie (EDA Birthday Card Co-ordinator) From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Fri May 8 18:05:25 1998 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id RAA12534 for jewel-news-outgoing; Fri, 8 May 1998 17:59:32 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <199805082159.RAA12534@smoe.org> Date: Fri, 08 May 1998 17:55:04 -0700 From: Joanne To: Jewel Mailing List Subject: Jewel-News: Canadian EDAs - Wizard of Oz on YTV! :) Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Yup :) I just saw the commercial on YTV. So I decided to look into it and I called the Charlie Rose show. They confirmed the show and that it's NOT a repeat, it's a new show scheduled for Monday the 18th! :-) For those of you that do not know, the Charlie Rose Show is on PBS (the Public Broadcasting System) in the USA, and it one of the best, if not THE best plain ol' interview shows on the air. When Jewel was on this show about a year ago, it was one of the best interviews I had seen her have/give (IMO). The show is an hour long, and Charlie usually has 2 or 3 guests, so Jewel could be on anytime during the show. It's syndicated on PBS, meaning not all PBS stations carry it, and it can be on any time of the day, and perhaps in some viewing markets it could be on the next day. So check your local listings. You don't wanna miss this show! (Please note, the Charlie Rose show is VERY NOTORIOUS for last minute bumpings and rescheduling of air dates....just letting you know....last year her airing WAS bumped the scheduled night due to the late breaking sheep cloning story....making Jewel the first ever star to be bumped from an airing by a clone, for you trivia buffs) Also, while poking around the Rock On TV site on AOL, Lesley was also there and pointed out that Jewel will be on TV next Tuesday (the 19th) on an ABC show called "The View", which in my market is on at 11:00am ET, but you obviously should check your local listings too. By checking the web site of "The View" at http://www.abc.com/theview/index.html it appears to be a show co-hosted by five ladies, the only one I recognize is Barbara Walters. Of course, there's also the previously announced Thursday May 21st show, "Where It's At: Rolling Stone's State of the Union" which is on at 9:00pm ET on ABC. The Jewel related excerpt from the Rock On TV web site blurb for this show says: Rolling Stone celebrates it's 30th anniversary with this two hour special scheduled to air on ABC on May 21st (9:00 pm ET); the award winning film making team of Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky, and Rolling Stone contributing editor Anthony DeCurtis spent time with a selection of today's hottest artists and noted opinion-makers {snip} show features exclusive and intimate performances from a number of today's most significant artists, including Jewel's first live performance of previously unreleased material, "Winter Song" and "Fragile Flame"...... Seeing how some stars run the gamut of talk shows and radio shows when in New York City promoting a new film, album or book, I would not at all be surprised to see her pop up on some other shows next Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday....so keep them eyes and ears peeled for any news on this stuff and of course post if you read or hear anything new :-) Mike :-) * If you are new to the Jewel list and need a helping hand * The Jewel EveryDay Angels List Homepage & Guide is at: * http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup * * If you have list related questions, feel free to email me * at Ducksoup@spectra.net * * DuckofPrey@aol.com WhyADuck55 on AOL Instant Messenger From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Mon May 11 23:47:18 1998 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id XAA11160 for jewel-news-outgoing; Mon, 11 May 1998 23:44:02 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <199805120344.XAA11160@smoe.org> From: ABershaw Date: Mon, 11 May 1998 22:56:12 EDT To: Jewel-news@smoe.org, jewel@smoe.org Subject: Jewel-News: MrBB-HOW TO ATTEND THE POETRY READING BY JEWEL Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hi all, Major update just in: Here's the crucial info for all who want to attend Jewel's Virgin Megastore reading in Times Square, NYC next Tuesday night at 7:00PM: For the Virgin Poetry reading on May 19th, here is what you have to do to attend...at 9am THIS Friday May 15th, Virgin will sell 250 special book certificates. These certificates do two very important things: 1) They get you in to the event. 2) You get a pre-signed book. The event is being held just outside the book store and the cafe on the lower level of the Virgin Megastore on Times Square. It is possible to look down on the lower level. For those lucky enough to get these special book certificates, there's an important thing to know. There is absolutely no audio recording, no video taping or cameras allowed in to the event. Do not bring these items with you or you will not be allowed in without getting rid of the equipment somehow. No-one so far knows about these instructions but you EDAs & Ecto people. They will be announced all over fairly soon though, so I wish all good luck who give it a try! MrBB LIST MODERATOR NOTE: many of you will have received more than one copy of this post, perhaps even three. It is because I sent it via two different methods, one (Jewel-announce@smoe) which bypasses the digest and sends the digest subscribers individual copies. If this caused any inconvenience, I am sorry. Please direct any complaints to me at ducksoup@spectra.net, and not to MRBB, he had nothing to do with it. - Mike :-) From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Mon May 11 23:50:57 1998 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id XAA10994 for jewel-news-outgoing; Mon, 11 May 1998 23:37:28 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <199805120337.XAA10994@smoe.org> From: ABershaw Date: Mon, 11 May 1998 20:09:52 EDT To: Jewel-news@smoe.org Subject: Jewel-News: MrBB-MAJOR JEWEL UPDATES-All you've been wondering & more! Also, every report I've seen posted about this show has mistakenly said: <<..including Jewel's first live performance of previously unreleased material, "Winter Song" and "Fragile Flame">> These are definitely not Jewel's FIRST live performances of these songs, but they are both excellent solo acoustic versions that I'm sure you'll enjoy. :-) Hope everyone is doing well & that this momentarily reduces my mailbox flow! ;-) MrBB From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Wed May 13 13:37:40 1998 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id NAA15097 for jewel-news-outgoing; Wed, 13 May 1998 13:33:43 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <199805131733.NAA15097@smoe.org> To: Jewel-News@smoe.org From: GrOOvEChK3@aol.com Date: 11 May 98 03:59:02 -0800 Subject: Jewel-News: Re HeY<3 Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hey angels i got some free aol magazine in mail ..It has a tiny article on jewel and a little pic...You no the one from the van.. :-) Hope everyone is doing well & that this momentarily reduces my mailbox flow! ;-) MrBB From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Wed May 13 13:52:32 1998 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id NAA15670 for jewel-news-outgoing; Wed, 13 May 1998 13:49:24 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <199805131749.NAA15670@smoe.org> To: Jewel-News@smoe.org From: ABershaw@aol.com Date: 11 May 98 19:53:48 -0800 Subject: Jewel-News: MrBB-HOW TO ATTEND THE POETRY READING BY JEWEL Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk >From owner-jewel-news Mon May 11 22:59:52 1998 Received: from imo25.mx.aol.com (imo25.mx.aol.com [198.81.17.69]) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/daemon-mode-relay2) with ESMTP id WAA10194; Mon, 11 May 1998 22:59:51 -0400 (EDT) Received: from ABershaw@aol.com by imo25.mx.aol.com (IMOv14.1) id FVQWa03031; Mon, 11 May 1998 22:56:12 +2000 (EDT) From: ABershaw Message-ID: Date: Mon, 11 May 1998 22:56:12 EDT To: Jewel-news@smoe.org, jewel@smoe.org, Ecto@smoe.org, DuckOfPrey@aol.com Mime-Version: 1.0 Subject: MrBB-HOW TO ATTEND THE POETRY READING BY JEWEL Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-transfer-encoding: 7bit X-Mailer: AOL 3.0 for Mac sub 84 Hi all, Major update just in: Here's the crucial info for all who want to attend Jewel's Virgin Megastore reading in Times Square, NYC next Tuesday night at 7:00PM: For the Virgin Poetry reading on May 19th, here is what you have to do to attend...at 9am THIS Friday May 15th, Virgin will sell 250 special book certificates. It'll help you immensely when you get the CD next week or in the near future. (It will be released along with her book next Tuesday May 19th & should be available from any bookstore selling the book.) In March, Jewel took a a few days off from filming her movie in Kansas City & went into a local studio to record herself reciting all the poetry featured in her upcoming book. Over the course of the next month, these recordings where arranged & edited to fill a CDs worth of time. Because of the "time crunch", Harper-Collins was unable to include this finalized tracklisting on the graphics on this 1st pressing of the" A Night Without Armour" CD. I'm told this will be corrected on future pressings, but for now, you'll have a CD with 87(!) tracks & no way to identify what tracks they are. This could drive you nuts should you enjoy programming or listening to any individual track. Since the tracks are not in the same order as the book & not all of the poems in the book are included, this tracklist may come in very handy to you. OK, here's the official tracklist on Jewel's spoken word CD version of "A Night Without Armour". It's a cut & paste from my database, so I hope it formats readably on your various email systems. I sent this list to Bibi & she may include a permanent link to it on Jewel's website. Perhaps Adam & Mike can also keep a link on the POJ & EDA Websites as well, for helping others in the future. I was told there is a limit of ONE certificate per person. (which costs 15$....you won't have to pay more later for the book or anything...15$ gets you the certificate, which gets you in the event and which you trade in for a pre-signed book at the store on Tuesday, which has the poetry reading and Question & Answer session by Jewel from 7:00pm to 8:30pm) I've been getting flooded with many more posts from people asking for others to buy them one (or more) certificate(s) etc. These posts hadn't been sent through because I wanted to call the Megastore and get some facts. Because of this limit of one per person, I am not going to send on any more posts asking for people to pick up a certificate for them. So please don't send any more in. Mike - Jewel list owner/manager/whatever :-) P.S. For those of you who don't know, the EDAF (EveryDay Angels Foundation) is a nonprofit organization set up to primarily promote volunteerism in the communities. It is a separate entity from the Jewel list, but was inspired by Jewel and the list. For more info on the EDAF, visit the page at http://web.edaf.org/edaff/ or e-mail me at Tlcathome@aol.com with EDAF in the subject.. We will be volunteering at the FoodBank of New Jersey's warehouse on Saturday May 30th from 10am to 2pm. We are opening our home to wayward EDA's who plan to attend the event. However, space is limited and we expect a big turnout! Plan to bring pillows and sleeping bags and/or blankets. You must attend the FoodBank activity in order to take part in the rest of the weekend's events! If you can't attend the event, please volunteer at a food bank or soup kitchen in your own area - and e-mail me and let me know you're doing it!!!!. If you need help locating a food bank in your area, check out this site's food bank locator: http://www.secondharvest.org/websecha/f_getouc.htm - if you don't have web access, just let me know and I'll see if I can find one for you!!!! We will also be doing a mini food drive, so please plan to bring at least a little something to donate. They are in need of high protein canned foods in particular, such as canned meats, etc... I will keep everyone posted as to their donation needs as I contact them again. We will also be delivering the food obtained from the food drive my brownie troop will be doing in their school. Sometime after that on Saturday, the plan is to go to FunTime America and be juvenile and play video games, lazertag, ride bumper cars - whatever everyone wants to do there :-) There MAY even be a show by an EDA in the living room at some point during the weekend. Then back to the Campbell Inn for the night. So far nothing is planned for Sunday (unless we do the LR show then), but that could always change..... If you are interested or have questions, please respond to Tlcathome@aol.com with EDAF weekend in the subject. Not surprisingly, in "Where It's At: The Rolling Stone State of the Union, (ABC, May 21, 9 P.M./ET), the fresh faces of rock--including Beck, Fiona Apple, Sean "Puffy" Combs and Jewel (pictured)--pipe in the loudest. The 23-year-old Alaska-born Jewel, a self described "student of music and student of life," has kept busy since the release of her 1996 chart-topping album, Pieces of You. For the special, she performs two unreleased songs from the "tons" the prolific songwriter has stockpiled. Since her participation in last year's Lilith Fair tour, she has given her vocal chords a rest to focus on "a whole new frontier in my life." The singer, it seems, is a budding actress and a poet; she's currently filming Ang Lee's Civil War drama, "Ride With the Devil," and has just released her first book of poetry, "A Night Without Armor" (HarperCollins). "I would never take my music forgranted," she says. "But I do have a lot to do, and I just get bored if I'm not sufficiently challenged. There's always a bigger risk of failure when you branch out, but I'd rather risk it. It keeps me from falling asleep." -Stef McDonald Regarding the Charlie Rose thing, it doesn't mention any of the guests, it just says: 11PM -- Ch 13 -- Charlie Rose---Discussion 1:00 Also no mention of any guests on "The View," so make sure you watch for her. Also, on Thursday, "Where It's At..." is listed as an Editor's Choice. WHERE IT'S AT: THE ROLLING STONE STATE OF THE UNION (CC) TV-14DL Thurs. 9 PM ABC The magazine celebrates its 30th anniverasary with a free-form exploration of youth and popular culture. Fiona Apple, Beck, Sean "Puffy" Combs,Jewel, Marilyn Manson, and Bruce Springsteen perform and comment on the emphasis on personal appearance, fame, religion, and the power of music. Public figure, including Walter Cronkite, Johnny Depp, Michael Douglass, Rolling Stone founder Jann S. Wenner and Tom Wolfe, also share their thoughts, as do youths from across America. More than a few folks have been sending in posts stating that they think that Jewel's "Wish You Were Here" may be a cover of the Pink Floyd song with the same title, so I asked MrBB, who ought to know, being her audio and video archivist. His reply is below (permission given to quote him). - Mike :-) His reply: Jewel has never (to my knowledge or on any archived recording) performed The Pink Floyd song "Wish You Were Here". Whatever song being spoken of must be a completely different original Jewel song that someone listed with an incorrect title on a tape. I remember a song called "I Don't Feel That Bad" that has a line "I don't wish you were here". Maybe thats it?? If someone tells me what show its on, I can easily look up that show & get the correct title confirmed when I get back.. And to clear up any other "Pink Floyd" speculation, Jewel has another totally original song called "Comfortably Numb" that is also NOT a Pink Floyd song. When I called the shows' execs last week, they said "Jewel is scheduled to be on Monday", which made it likely THEN that she would be on todays' aired show. However, the Charlie Rose show *quite often* changes its' airing schedule and since last Fridays' scheduled airing was bumped for a special Frank Sinatra tribute, lord only knows if they will bump Jewels' airing tonight in favor of what was supposed to air last Friday, or keep her show scheduled. (in either case, it SHOULD air within the next three days) The Charlie Rose show updates their web site each mid-morning eastern time, so I'll check it from work and post if I see anything that clarifies the situation. The show airs on PBS, and is syndicated on PBS stations, meaning it could be on any time of the day, or even regularly shown the next day on YOUR PBS station. So check your local listings. It's an hour long show, and it is not known when Jewel will be on during the show....Charlie usually has two or three guests, and usually gives equal time to his guests. (One more thing.....I don't know the exact time that the show will be TAPED, but I DO recall that one list member posted that in their area that the show aired at 4pm ET the laast time Jewel was on this show, so check your listings carefully, it may be on a lot earlier in the day where you are) Try not to miss this show...Charlie is one of the best interviewers there is on TV, in my opinion, as he really *interviews* his guests...it's not like your Leno/letterman appearances. Jewel the singer. Jewel the guitarist. Jewel the actress... Now, meet Jewel the poet. She already has conquered the music world with her seven-times platinum debut, Pieces of You, and segued into an acting career with the role of Dorothy in a production of "The Wizard of Oz" and a movie development deal. Now, singer/songwriter Jewel has decided to follow in the footsteps of such trailblazing singers/poets as the late Jim Morrison of the Doors and Patti Smith with the release of a book of poetry, "A Night Without Armor," which hits shelves Tuesday. The 23-year-old singer writes in the book's preface that she has learned that "not all poetry lends itself to music." As proof, she has put together a 160-page book of poems and journal entries that she's kept since childhood. But what do published poets and experts in the field think of her work? "The relationship of music to poetry is one that is long, honorable and complicated," according to Don Share, published poet and poetry editor of the literary journal Partisan Review. "Anyone can imagine how a musical impulse grows into words, while setting highly esteemed verses to music has always been a natural tribute." Share, 41, a winner of the P.E.N./New England Discovery Award, said the history of rock and poetry has been a difficult one, with such renowned musicians as late Beatles leader John Lennon, Bob Dylan, Lou Reed and Henry Rollins attempting to make the crossover with "mixed results." Few, if any, of their poems have ended up in poetry anthologies of note. Despite his assertion that people often turn to poetry and music for different reasons, Share said he was able to find a kinship between Jewel's poems and the work of established poets such as Ntozake Shange ("for colored girls who have considered suicide/ when the rainbow is enuf"). "Both [Ntozake Shange's] and Jewel's [poems] resonate with the need for and need to maintain distance from men," Share said. In the manner of her songs such as "Who Will Save Your Soul?" (RealAudio excerpt), Jewel's poems paint the singer as an artist whose thoughts and lyrics are full of wide-eyed wonder and youthful, heart-on-sleeve sentiment. That's one of the reasons that Stephen Young, senior editor of Chicago-based Poetry magazine, said he was unimpressed with her poems. "Like most efforts of their kind," Young said, "these have a clumsy, but heartfelt honesty, so it would be cruel to dismiss them entirely. Yet without the force of Jewel's singing voice, the sentiments offered here lose all of their immediate power." Young added that the only reason he might be interested in the "routine, journal-entry expressions of adolescent angst and teen insecurity" found in a sampling of the poems was precisely because he was a fan of Jewel's music. Couplets such as "As a child I walked/ with noisy fingers/ along the hemline/ of so many meadows/ back home" (from "As A Child I Walked") "remind me of one reason that personal diaries are often sold with a lock and key," Young said. A representative for the volume's publisher, HarperCollins, said the company saw the book of Jewel's poetry as a way to inspire reading and writing in fans. "What I've learned from working here and surveying the many unofficial Jewel websites is that one way Jewel communicates with her fans is through poetry," said Sherri Rifkin, associate director of online marketing for HarperCollins. Rifkin cited the inclusion of the singer's poetry in her album's liner notes as being a natural bridge to a volume of unpublished poetry. Fans read Jewel's poems online and they are inspired to write their own, Rifkin explained. "Any way poetry and literature can be promoted, especially to young people, we're all for [that]." Rifkin added that HarperCollins is promoting an online poetry contest -- to be judged by published poets -- featuring a $500 first prize that will be matched by Jewel with a donation to the singer's charity of choice. Calling Jewel's poems less technically proficient than the contemporary verse of Jorie Graham and less political than that of Carolyn Forche, Share said that the singer's work "reads mostly like internal monologue worked up from diary entries." "It also is less questioning," Share said, citing such lines as "I miss your touch/ all taciturn/ like the slow migration of birds/ nesting momentarily/ upon my breast/ then lifting" from "I Miss Your Touch" as being beautiful in their own right. "Perhaps it's refreshing that Jewel doesn't bother to imitate [famous poets Emily] Dickinson and/or [Sylvia] Plath," Share said, "as frequently occurs among some budding poets. Remember, it's on PBS and can air anytime at all, as it's not nationally broadcasted....your local PBS station can air it when they please. Also, MrBB was told that today Jewel did tape those 5 off-air poem readings that will air on MTV at or about midnight on 5 consecutive evenings. We weren't told what night this will start. He and I are betting Monday....as five readings will fill the week....but it certainly could begin tonight or tomorrow. If taping, we recommend taping from 10 of to 10 after midnight. Also Part II, on Wednesday Jewel will be taping a CNN "Shobiz Today" segment, and no one at this time has any idea when it will air. (Could be Wednesday, could be Thursday) Not bad huh? News about three Jewel TV items and not at all sure when any of them will air? That's showbiz!! ;-) Of course the ONE thing we know for sure is Jewel singing two songs on the Rolling Stone special on ABC TV on Thursday night. :-) That's all folks :-) Mike From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Wed May 20 08:54:42 1998 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id IAA24035 for jewel-news-outgoing; Wed, 20 May 1998 08:52:18 -0400 (EDT) Received: from spectra.net (root@blue.spectra.net [204.177.130.1]) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/daemon-mode-relay2) with ESMTP id AAA18247; Wed, 20 May 1998 00:17:55 -0400 (EDT) Received: from default (pm3188.spectra.net [204.177.130.188]) by spectra.net (8.8.3/8.8.3) with SMTP id AAA25049; Wed, 20 May 1998 00:15:13 -0400 Message-Id: <199805200415.AAA25049@spectra.net> X-Sender: ducksoup@spectra.net X-Mailer: QUALCOMM Windows Eudora Pro Version 4.0 Date: Wed, 20 May 1998 00:14:35 -0400 To: jewel@smoe.org, jewel-news@smoe.org From: Mike Connell Subject: Jewel-News: Jewel poetry CD tacklist liner is NOW available for download!! :-) Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hi folks :-) Those of you who have gotten the CD version of A Night Without Armor and/or who remember MrBBs' post that the track-listing of the 87 poems is NOT with the released CD, will be very pleased to know that one has been designed so you can download it and size it accordingly so you can print it out to fit inside your CDs' case :-) It's available on Adam Longfellow's Pieces of Jewel website. Just go to the site at http://jewel.zoonation.com and either click on the "Poetry" area on the menu at the top of the page, or click on the link that says "Exclusive! Get the missing tracklist". MrBB Go to: http://www.tvgen.com/jewel/contest.htm THE OFFICIAL JEWEL ONLINE POETRY CONTEST Now that you've read Jewel's poems, here's a chance to let her read one of your own creations. Enter the Official Jewel Online Poetry Contest! All you have to do is submit to us an original, previously unpublished poem in the space below. Jewel will choose one grand-prize winner and 10 runners-up after our judges — led by poet Bob Holman, dean of the spoken-word scene and co-owner of Mouth Almighty/Mercury Records and his panel of Po Masters — select the top 30 entries. Entries will be judged on originality, vision, how well they evoke their subject matter, creative use of language and degree of imagination. No submissions may be fewer than 10 words or more than 75 words in length. Entries must be received no later than 11:59 pm/ET on June 16, 1998, when the contest officially closes. One grand prize of $500 will be awarded; Jewel will match that amount and donate it to the charity of the grand-prize winner's choice. The grand-prize winner and the 10 runners-up will receive a signed copy of Jewel's book A Night Without Armor and a copy of the CD audio version of A Night Without Armor. In addition, the winning poems will be published here on the TVGEN site in July. Please read the rules carefully before entering. First, here's the "official announcement" from Harper Collins about the Poetry Contest, followed by details on the LIVE CHATS WITH JEWEL that I previously mentioned & other miscellaneous info. MrBB ******************************** >From Harper Collins: We're marking the publication of Jewel's first book of poetry, A NIGHT WITHOUT ARMOR, with some special online event! ONLINE POETRY CONTEST: MAY 19 to JUNE 16, 1998 Sharpen your pencils and keep your notebooks handy because we're holding a poetry contest with a Grand Prize of $500. Not only that, Jewel will match the prize with a $500 donation to the winner's favorite charity. Ten runners-up will receive a CD version of A NIGHT WITHOUT ARMOR and an autographed copy of the book. The contest is hosted by the TV Guide Entertainment Network, so visit their web site (http://www.tvgen.com/jewel/) to enter. Preliminary judging will be by Poet Bob Holman, Dean of the Spoken Word Scene, co-owner of Mouth Almighty/Mercury Records, joined by his panel of Po Masters. Jewel will pick the final winners herself. Good luck! ********************************************* Now onto more info on various things: LIVE CHATS Jewel will chat live online twice in early June. On June 3 at 8:00 pm EST, she will appear on the VH-1 area of America Online, an event co-sponsored by BarnesandNoble.com. Then on June 8, she'll hold a chat in the TVGEN/Yahoo! Auditorium at 10:00 pm EST. Log on and you'll have a chance to chat with Jewel. TV INFO: Remember, Thursday (tommorrow) night at 9:00EST, ABC Network broadcasts the Rolling Stone Mag special featuring Jewel performing live at Java Joe's earlier this year. Jewel will also be on CNN Showbiz Today on one of the next few days. MTV should start showing 1 minute spots of Jewel reading Poetry at Midnight. This may begin next Monday night but could be starting any night now. Set VCRs to be sure not to miss it, if you are interested. On 6/28/98, Jewel is scheduled to do another Letterman Show. This is tentative & may change. The following night, 6/29/98, Jewel will be the first featured guest on the premiere of a new MTV interview program called "Fanatic". Miscellaneous: Periodically check Atlantic Records Website for info on a webcast of the entire Poetry Reading from Times Square last night. They do plan to webcast this at a later date (soon). To those writing me about The EDA Birthday Card: I have it & YES, I'll personally make sure Jewel gets the card in time for her birthday. :-) For the many asking me.....I do not know if you got your "Jewel message" to Jennie, the b-day card co-ordinator, in time. If you are worried about this, I suggest you send your message via Jewel's website email link or via regular mail to the PO Box listed in the POY CD. Bibi will forward all that stuff to Jewel at a later date. And finally, a last reminder that Cal EDAs interested in checking out Jewel & Lenedra's friend Andres Condon, can see him at an intimate coffeehouse gig at Bistro 101 in Leucadia, California THIS FRIDAY, May 22. The venue has great food & is open to all ages. The address is 1650 N. HWY 101 in Leucadia. You can phone Bistro 101 at 760-753-6440. Area EDAs may enjoy checkin this gig out. The 23-year-old "You Were Meant for Me" singer was taking a break from her movie Ride With the Devil (formerly To Live On) and was in town to promote A Night Without Armor: Poems, her new book. Decked out in a semisheer pink shirt, a knee-length beige skirt and really cool silver sandals, Jewel read a handful of compositions from A Night Without Armor (a collection of more than a hundred of her poems) including "As a Child I Walked," "Wild Horse" and "You Tell Me." She also answered questions from the audience (the store was packed with fans, many of them male) -- and even chatted with callers at Virgin's stores in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Orlando and Montreal, where the reading was being simulcast on television screens. When asked why she was releasing a book of poetry, Jewel said, "Writing, to me, is just how I breathe." She revealed that she'd been writing poetry long before she began her career as a singer-songwriter -- and that for her, poetry is the form of self-expression that's closest to her heart (she says she writes poems in her journal every day). But rest assured that Jewel won't be ditching her music career for the literary life any time soon (whew!) -- when one concerned fan asked if she'd be able to balance her writing with her music, she insisted that she'd be doing both for years to come. "I have this overwhelming desire to communicate with people," she explained. Good news for us. The 4 tracks are an unreleased version of You Were Meant For Me (known as the Juan Patino version), and three other unreleased tracks Cold Song, Rocker Girl and Emily (although all three have subsequently been released on the vinyl version of Pieces Of You) * If you are new to the Jewel list and need a helping hand * The Jewel EveryDay Angels List Homepage & Guide is at: * http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup * * If you have list related questions, feel free to email me * at Ducksoup@spectra.net * * DuckofPrey@aol.com WhyADuck55 on AOL Instant Messenger From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Sun May 24 23:39:33 1998 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id XAA03621 for jewel-news-outgoing; Sun, 24 May 1998 23:32:15 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <199805250332.XAA03621@smoe.org> From: PENNY16161 Date: Sun, 24 May 1998 17:39:53 EDT To: Jewel@smoe.org Subject: Jewel-News: Jewel on MTV's "Most Influential Artists of the 90's" list Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk MTV is doing the most influential artists of the '90s. (stars always seen to do more than one media event a day) The Conan web site ( http://www.nbc.com/conan ) doesn't go ahead that far in the upcoming guests /"who's next" section of his site, so I guess we'll have to wait until we hear from MrBB (who's out of town right now) or until mention of it shows up on the official Jewel web site. Mike :-) P.S. For those that don't know, The Conan O'Brien Show is a late night show on NBC TV, and it airs right after the Tonight Show With Jay Leno in most areas. * If you are new to the Jewel list and need a helping hand * The Jewel EveryDay Angels List Homepage & Guide is at: * http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup * * If you have list related questions, feel free to email me * at Ducksoup@spectra.net * * DuckofPrey@aol.com WhyADuck55 on AOL Instant Messenger From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Tue May 26 15:19:24 1998 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id PAA27156 for jewel-news-outgoing; Tue, 26 May 1998 15:19:12 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <199805261919.PAA27156@smoe.org> From: Tlcathome Date: Tue, 26 May 1998 15:12:12 EDT To: jewel@smoe.org Subject: Jewel-News: NJC: EDAF gathering THIS WEEKEND!!!!!! It's not too late to attend, so if you plan to make the event, just e-mail me. Any NYC EDA's who wish to attend, you can take the train from Penn Station to Matawan, NJ and we'll get you a ride to our home and back to the station on Sunday In case you missed it in the last post, we'll be doing a pot-luck bbq saturday afternoon between the food bank and FunTime America (or maybe FunMania....) So, plan to bring a dish to pass (or plan to make a run to the grocery store on the corner.......) And don't forget the food drive, so bring canned goods for that too!!!!! Hope to see many of you this weekend, ready to help the foodbank help those less fortunate!!!!! Below are the previous 2 posts about the event - feel free to e-mail me with questions or to RSVP!!!! Tammy :-) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ OK folks, in case you missed the last announcement, there is a copy of it at the end :-) I thought I'd post the attendees of the gathering so far - it's gonna be a fun weekend and an opportunity to help others in the process :-) Just ask last year's Great EDAdventure attendees how much fun we had :-) It's a great opportunity to meet some fellow EDA's and possibly make new friends - we've made so many :-) If you're planning to attend and your name is not here, e-mail me - and of course, if your name is here and you are no longer attending, please let me know :-) (Please excuse any spelling mistakes :-) Dennis Harris Tom Proven Amy Neufeld Mark Nissley (Crunch) Tom and Vicki Miles (and maybe friend Marissa) Eric Montas (Crashboy) Bill Bartholemew Chris Moynihan Tom O'Brien and Rachel Martin Ali Fraser Kelly Galagher Rich Chang (Akira) Abel Rosario Laura Marion Joshua Baummer Erica Cavallo (Puddini) and of course - Rob and Tammy Campbell If you need a ride and/or need picked up at the train station, airport, etc... let me know and I'll see what I can do for you :-) I think after the foodbank and before we go to FunTime America, we'll do a pot luck BBQ here - that's worked well for us in the past. Then for Dinner everyone can just get Pizza or something at FunTime America's little restaurant :-) Tammy :-) original post.......................................................................... .............................. Once again the Campbell Inn will be open for business to accommodate those interested in attending the East Coast EDAF kickoff event!!! Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hi again, I hardly ever get to post pleasant ramblings anymore, and its way overdue! I've had a lot of cool emails from various EDAs lately & not enough time to reply individually, so here goes with all kinds of miscellaneous stuff.... First, many have asked me about the European CD single of "Morning Song". It includes 3 versions of MS, one being the album version. The "radio mix" which is the version hitting radio in Europe is a completely different version from the album featuring full rythym tracks (drums & bass) as well as some orchestration. It's nice & is very different from the album version. Additional guitar tracks are also provided by David Roth (He sounds familiar... isn't Patty Griffin's guitar player a David Roth? Hmmmm.) The "reggae mix" is similar to the "radio mix" but has a slightly different arrangement. Most EDAs will likely enjoy these alternate versions. This will not be released in North or South America, but is commonly available here as an import now. This coming summer is lookin to be a great time for more of us to meet each other & old friends to hang out again enjoying great live music from the San Diego scene (even without Jewel touring). I still haven't heard dates yet, but the Steve Poltz LRT (Living Room Tour) is apparently going to happen & confirmed dates should be announced sometime soon. In addition, we are in the process of putting together another "Midwest & Northeast" LRT which is going to feature two of my favorites (& Jewel's good pals); Joy Eden Harrison (from Chicago, transplanted from San Diego) & Lisa Sanders (from San Diego) TOGETHER! This will happen around the end of August into early September. We'll finally get these gals out East....& damn, it's about time, too! :-) An anouncement will be forthcoming to apply as a host for one of these LRTs in a month or so. I highly recommend both of these artists to all EDAs. Both have a great album out & are even more wonderful live. I know all who've participated in last years LRTs will certainly be there & I hope a lot of new faces take the chance to scope out this "LRT Phenomenon" in 1998! Somethin is definately GOIN ON here! This whole LRT concept is THE BEST THING to ever emerge from this community, in my opinion. It's certainly one of the coolest things I've ever been involved in & am determined to see it continue. More "Future Folklore" in the making, I'm sure. A lot of people (including many industry people) are watching the EDAs these days, because its such an incredible community doing amazing things. You are really changing the dynamics of the artist/audience relationship with these LRT gigs. Rolling Stone Magazine was in touch with me today & didn't bring up Jewel (Yeeha!). They were fascinated by the "LRT Scene" & will likely be the next in line to do a story on it soon. I also want to thank several EDAs who wrote me privately about enjoying Mossy Kilcher's CD (Jewel's Aunt). I had fun remastering it & hope many new & other archival Kilcher Family releases will become available in the future. (Jewel's Grandmother Ruth performed around Alaska with her two youngest daughters as "The 3 Kilcher Cabbage Heads". Now if we can only find those recordings.......) Many of you will also enjoy the booklet & artwork that comes with Mossy's CD. There are many vintage Homer homestead photos of Jewel's family. Some include Atz' & his sisters Mossy, Stellavera, Wurtila & Catkin singing, Jewel's grandparents Yule & Ruth, as well as more recent pictures. One of the color photos is of Mossy, her son Arlyn & Jewel on horseback when she was 11 or 12 years old. (Its now available at The Kilcher Alaska Webstore at http://www.kilcheralaskastore.com/) Also, I heard back from Andres Condon who said he very much enjoyed meeting & hanging out with the EDAs that went to his gig last Friday night. I know the EDA feelin was mutual because one (Paul) wrote me saying so! :-) I want to let you know that Andres will be there again this coming Friday night. Why do Jewel & Lenedra like Andres so much? Find out for yourself & check out this intimate gig! The info again, is: Bistro 101 in Leucadia, California THIS FRIDAY, May 29th. The venue has great food & is open to all ages. The address is 1650 N. HWY 101 in Leucadia. You can phone Bistro 101 at 760-753-6440. Say hi to Andres for me if you go. I also enjoyed seeing Tom & Nancy Morales in the Jewel footage of "Winter Song" on the Rolling Stone Special! And wasn't that Ric Kaestner, vocalist with Cindy Lee Berryhill's Garage Orchestra looking mesmerized on the floor? :-) It was great seeing many of you along the Cindy Lee Berryhill tour. Keep expanding your music boundaries! Jewel is just the tip of the San Diego iceberg! That is official as of today. If this changes or Jewel decides to do some LF dates outside North America (which is possible) later on this year, that info will be posted both here & on the calendar at Jewel's website. Speaking of the website, BiBi has been busy creating some new features, more of which will be revealed soon. One new thing that's already up is a "rumor/truth" link that will hopefully handle (ridiculous) rumors that seem to pop up more often lately. There's two entries up already (guess which ones ;-) & I'd expect this "Wish You Were Here" song rumor will be the next entry up soon, hehehe. ;-) You'll find this as another link off the FAQ link on the site. For those who still don't know where Jewel's site is, go to: http://www.jeweljk.com/ (It's down at the moment, but should be up again soon) Also, as I said recently, BiBi plans to have audio & video clips of Jewel's upcoming recording sessions on the site for your viewing & listening pleasure. Several great longtime projects & new merchandise will soon be announced (in about a week) as well as prices dropping on the ANWA Book & CD when buying it through the website store. Check it periodically for updated info. A lot of great new stuff is coming! Also, in related San Diego Scene news, Jewel's friend Lisa Sanders debuts her awesome new band tonight at Java Joes. Lisa's good friend (& sometimes partner) Mary Dolan is currently on tour around the US & she's in the process of trying to put together a few LRT stops along the way in June. Stick around for info on that. I know most EDAs would really enjoy Mary's music & I recommend her highly. For current info on Mary, go to: http://v-music.com/artists/mary.dolan/mryhm.htm Finally, I'd like to say I'm really enjoying the thoughtful "new album" discussion provoked by Sean Hooks. Several people have written me (privately) who are very upset at Sean & others agree with him & wanted me to know it! Although I often disagree with Sean, he is almost always very thought provoking. I hope he stays on the list forever because he always seems to get intelligent discussion going. That's one of the primary reasons we're all here, isn't it? I thought you might enjoy this. Somebody sent it to me, so I don't know where it came from. (LIST MODERATOR NOTE: it's the article/interview from The New York Post that someone posted about earlier today - Mike ) JEWEL TAKES A STANZA By LISA ROBINSON - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ - -- FOR those who thought of Time magazine cover girl Jewel as just another pretty pop superstar, her first release since her 10 million-selling debut album may come as a surprise. It's a book of poems. In her just-published "A Night Without Armor" (HarperCollins. $15), the 24-year-old singer/songwriter (born Jewel Kilcher) isn't afraid to tackle the big themes: love, sex, courage, betrayal, family, lies, revenge, passion. (Jewel reads selections from her book on HarperAudio cassette and CD.) Jewel, born in Alaska and raised in Michigan, rose to fame after her 1995 album, "Pieces of You." These days, she's feeling uncomfortable as a pop phenomenon, is currently filming her first movie (with director Ang Lee) and says she writes poetry every day. Lisa Robinson: Why did you start to write poems? Jewel: My ability to articulate verbally has never been that strong. I've always been a bit shy. For me, poetry was the way I became intimate with myself. To tell you the truth, I've felt uncomfortable being in pop music, especially because I really made a folk album. It was just me singing with acoustic guitar. I don't think it gets much more folk than that. The ^radio_ singles were re-mixed, but the album was basically the three chords I knew when I was 19, and I became afraid that the world would come to know me just the way the media portrayed me: as this Alaskan, raised by wolves in an igloo. (Laughs). LR: Were you? J: No (laughs), but that's how I seemed to be portrayed and I feared that people would consume me without ever knowing what I taste like. Even though I knew that I'd be scrutinized for going from music to poetry, this book was an opportunity for me to be known in the world for who I am. As a child, when I read poets like Anais Nin, (Charles) Bukowski or (Pablo) Neruda, it taught me to live bravely and passionately; without that I'd really feel half alive. LR: In one of your poems you write that you're told "you're adored by millions but no one calls." Was that true? J: Well, it goes through phases. People think that once you get signed to a record deal or sell a million records, every insecurity you have - about your body, your place in the world - disappears. Suddenly you have a lobotomy and everything changes. But to tell you the truth, I've never found satisfaction in parties or bars or getting compliments from people who didn't know me. I need substance and I need truth, and I find that kids are very hungry for sincerity. So I have to live my life honestly, try and keep struggling with real issues, do it in front of people and let people take whatever they can from it. LR: Did you really say something on "Jay Leno" about your music being "redundant"? J: What I meant was that I'd been touring for five years behind one record that I made when I was 19. After three years, I finally broke some ground ^in the U.S._, then I went to Europe and started from scratch and had to get asked all about Alaska again. I was just ready for something creatively different. LR: Were you concerned about revealing the sexuality in some of your poems? J: When I put the book together, I made a book for myself that the world wouldn't see. Then, I thought about what I wanted the world to see. But I decided to stick with the first one because it's most honest. To me, love poems are just natural. Everybody makes love, and it's very beautiful. I also write about the phases before that, when you're too young to know what sex is or what you're worth. A lot of the poems in there deal with insecurities: like there's a pretty girl on the face of a magazine and all I see are my dirty hands turning the page. I felt that my whole life. All the models ^in the fashion magazines_ are so emaciatingly beautiful and perfect. And I grew up on a f---ing homestead with dirt under my nails driving tractors. You never get over that. LR: You don't think you're pretty? J: I think I'm OK, but you know, I have days where I just don't want to go on television because I ate Ben & Jerry's last night and I can't face the world. I'm not one of those girls who starves herself, but 60 percent of my school was either anorexic or bulimic, and all that damaged me as a kid. LR: Is there a man in your life at the moment? J: No, the last one took a lot out of me, and besides, I'm too busy making a movie these days. LR: What's that like? J: Whoooh, it was tough in the beginning, especially since I came from zero acting experience. Instead of taking a role like a romantic comedy that I could have done with my eyes shut, I went to something serious (tentatively titled "Ride With the Devil") with director Ang Lee. I kind of courageously jumped out there and then realized that it could be a public execution. LR: What happened at the Super Bowl? The tape ^of Jewel singing the national anthem_ began before you started "singing?" J: That was bizarre. ^The NFL_ insisted on a tape, and the reason I agreed to do that was because once, I sang the national anthem live at another baseball game ^in a stadium_ and you couldn't hear yourself sing. The delay was so bad that you heard what's coming back at you five seconds later. LR: At the Super Bowl, you just smiled and kept lip synching. J: What else can you do? I kind of half wanted to just stop, and yawn or something, be really obvious. (Laughs). Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Good Morning, I would appreciate it if EVERYONE reads this & remember it for the future. Apparently, last night two people were in AOL chat rooms inpersonating both Jewel & myself. They replaced the "W" at the end of my screen name with 2 "V" 's, thus making it look similar enough to my name to fool unsuspecting Jewel fans. A similar thing was done with Jewel's name replacing the "W" again or replacing the "L" in JewelJK with a capital "i". I want everyone to be 100% aware that I NEVER go in chat rooms. I've not been in ANY chat room in over a year! Those who know me well, know there's a good reason why I never go in chat rooms & thats because I type with one finger & am completely useless in chat rooms. (I type so damn slooooow, the topic would change 5 times before I could answer anything!) Also, Jewel NEVER, I repeat NEVER logs onto AOL to chat. The only exception is during pre-announced official things like whats being done next Wednesday night through the AOL Live Arena. And even then she's NEVER on under her screen name. There is absolutely no situation where she has ever or will ever be online chatting out of the clear blue. Once in a blue moon, BiBi may be online on Jewel's account, but even then she will NEVER be in a chat room. So....Bottom line is that Jewel or myself will NEVER be in a chat room. PERIOD. No exceptions. If someone in a chat room claims to be either one of us, they are FAKES and not to be trusted. This also applies to IRC chats, in which case neither of us even has a clue on how to IRC chat. Remember this & from now on, if ANYONE claims to be either one of us in a chat room, do not be a victim of these people! We'd also appreciate you reporting these people to AOL T.O.S. violation service. This may help us & have those people removed from the service & prevent others from being victimized. To report a T.O.S. (Terms Of Service) violation on AOL go to keyword TOS and follow the instructions. Maybe you thought- "hmm..i wonder how one gets to host a LRT show?" or "I'd sure like to host a LRT show some day!". Well, here's your chance to apply for the bandwagon. Just send your name and location *to me* at: TjtaLken@aoL.com You will recieve an e-mail back with instructions, information and questions within a few days. I am sorry but I'm only accepting United States and Canada applicants (sorry no hawaii or alaska either) at this time. I have been working with Lisa Sanders' and Joy Eden Harrison's Manager, also with Mary Dolan for upcoming tour dates. So for clarification right now I *am not* involved in Steve Poltz's touring plans. ------------------------------------------------------- And be sure to check out an upcoming LRT on June 14th near Boston, Massachuttes with two local musicians- Liz Stahler and Adrianne Gonzalez.
