Web-challenged instructions are now also included. For those already signed up through the AngelFood Bank Website, please expect a one week delay on receiving your specific branch assignment instructions in your email box. Hundreds of requests are being processed daily & these things take time. Please be patient. It'll be worth the wait. _______________________________________________________ Hello all EDAs, I'm here to instruct you & share my excitement about the "Future Folklore" Volume 3 tape. Instructions are included in this ridiculously long post, but for those that are new, I'm going to repost what this is all about before the instructions. There's NO HURRY, so again, PLEASE READ ALL OF THIS. First, a HUGE THANKS goes to James Judd, who's vision to improve the free tape distributions is responsible for the way "FF3" will be administrated. I also give boundless THANKS to all those generous volunteer members of the Angelfood Bank Taper Army! It's their personal generosity of time & resources that will make this distribution possible at all. It's because of them that's anyone who wants FF3 now AND in the future will have a means to do so. Many Internet lists run tape trees but there's always been one very significant difference in the way its been done on the EDA list. That's the fact that we've always made our tapes available to EVERYONE on the list (at the time of distribution), regardless of equipment or their ability to perpetuate the distribution. Only a blank tape & postage is required to enjoy our projects. If this goes well & a renewed interest in FF1 & 2 becomes apparent, we'll consider making previous volumes available again. Now on to what FF3 is all about & then the instructions. Future Folklore Volume 3 is an incredible recording of two wonderful shows that happened in San Diego during Thanksgiving weekend 1997. Many listmembers from all over North America attended. The shows were in celebration of the EDAFoundation having its paperwork processed through government channels & beginning its infancy for real. Many great musicians performed & Jewel herself made a surprise appearance to a very enthusiastic audience. All the artists personally authorized the material included on Future Folklore Volume 3. Jewel, Cindy Lee Berryhill, Joy Eden Harrison, Gregory Page, Elizabeth Hummel, Tara MacLean, Lisa Sanders & Mary Dolan are all featured on the tape. When I produced "Future Folklore" Volumes 1 & 2, I concentrated on fairly complete performances by Steve Poltz, Cindy Lee Berryhill & Elizabeth Hummel (taken from two EDA events that were documented back in April of 97). For Volume 3, I've selected highlights from both evenings at Java Joe's during the EDA Thanksgiving Weekend of 11/28 & 29/97. There's really a great diversity to the music on this compilation. Powerful & emotional songs from Lisa Sanders, Mary Dolan & Tara Maclean. Updated traditional approaches from Elizabeth Hummel on her dulcimer. Joy Eden Harrison swinging & singing the blues. Sentimentally seasoned songwriting by Gregory Page. Jewel belting out Monteverdi accapella for some culture. And finally my personal favorite, Cindy Lee Berryhill & her Garage Orchestra taking us to "Pop Heaven", when not leading us to some other planet altogether! I think you'll find all of the performances to be enjoyable at the least & mind blowing at the most. For those who enjoyed Cindy Lee & Elizabeth on FF1 & 2, this material is very different than those performances. Elizabeth rocks when playing dulcimer! And Cindy Lee......awesome! On the previous tapes you listened to a unique folksinger, but here those songs are strange & beautiful pop-symphonies that are totally infectious! Although diverse, there's a continuity in listening to these artists together. There's strong friendships between them all & a never ending support of each other that has impressed me from the minute I was taken in by this San Diego scene. It's similar support & friendships that are developing & spreading around the planet now by the EDAs, I think. Both sides of the tape end with the humor (& looseness) that these events so often inspire. There's a feeling in the room during these performances that I can't describe accurately. I have tried to capture it on the recordings & I think I've succeeded to a certain extent. By suspending very high quality microphones out of the loft over the stage, I was able to blend the "room ambience" into a soundboard direct stereo mix which fed directly into the decks. This enables the listener to enjoy the clear definition of vocals & guitars that a direct soundboard feed provides while still having the ambience & dynamics that only a room recording done with excellent microphones can provide. I mixed these sources direct to digital while it happened & after analysing it, I felt no post-production or EQ-ing was needed at all. It really sounds that good! Anyone interested in Jewel's music will certainly welcome a perfect recording of the extremely rare unreleased gems "Jessica" & (the operatic treat of) "Lasciatemi Morrire". But it's really the other artists that I think will amaze many of you. Jewel came out of an incredibly talented "scene" in San Diego, which is still very much alive & well! Jewel & these other musicians & songwriters are all intertwined & connected. (Tara is an exception but has been embraced by The EDA community) I sure hope you take the opportunity to follow these instructions & get this FREE tape while it's being distributed in excellent quality. Any Jewel fan on this list who doesn't bother to pay attention is truly missing the boat! This "tape tree" is going to be different than previous trees done on the EDA list. One major difference, is that thanks to James Judd & the new AngelFood Bank, we plan to keep FF3 available so there's no big hurry! (Of course many are anxiously awaiting it, so go for it as soon as you like!) James Judd & I already circulated 70 copies of FF3 to people around the planet & many of them will be graciously volunteering their time & resources to help all of you. ************************************************ Part One: For EDAs with web access: Here's all you need do. Go to the new Angelfood Bank Website AND FOLLOW THE SIMPLE INSTRUCTIONS. The URL for FF3 signup & instructions is: http://www.angelfoodbank.org/ Once there, you'll find it easy to sign up & be assigned to a generous member of The AngelFood Bank Taper Army, who will graciously make you a copy FREE OF CHARGE. If you are in the USA, you'll simply supply your own 100 minute blank cassette & a self addressed padded mailer with four 32 cent stamps already on it. It's that easy. If you live outside the USA, simply follow the instructions for your country. Part Two: For Web-challenged EDAs: If you are one of the "web-challenged" EDAs, please do not get upset! You can simply send an email request to The Angelfood Bank in the following manner: Send your email to: info@angelfoodbank.org In the subject line, please ONLY write: FF3 Request In the body of the email write: 1. Your email address 2. Your full name 3. Your address including country That's it. It may take several days (up to a week) for you to receive a reply & instructions, so please be patient. ************************************************ Final note to everyone: Many of the goals I had with previous volumes of "Future Folklore" have already been realized, including "The Living Room Tour" & the weekend documented here. I hope this series will continue to inspire many more music related events in the future! This will bring back great memories for those who experienced these shows & I hope it helps to share the experience with those unable to attend. A high quality recording of "Jessica" is probably the most common "dream request" from Jewel tape collectors. This one will certainly fill that need real well! Ah.....& finally, Cindy Lee Berryhill & Garage Orchestra. Truly one of the most wonderful things I've ever listened to! Everyone this week was great, but Cindy Lee is from another planet altogether! Fortunately for me, so am I. Enjoy FF3! :-) MrBB PS. Processing of your branch assignment takes several days, at least, & may take a week before you receive an email with your specific instructions. Please be patient & you will be taken care of. It will be worth the wait. It's just a short blurb, but basically, "You Were Meant For Me" was mentioned as one of the best riffs of 1997. Here's what the article read: "This year's Lilith Fair helped spawn a breakthrough for several female artists, including Sarah McLachlan, Meredith Brooks, and many other festival participants. But perhaps the most prosperous was the Alaskan-raised Jewel, who established herself as today's favorite folk-pop artist with three Top 10 singles, "Who Will Save Your Soul," "Foolish Games," and "You Were Meant for Me." All three cuts feature the singer's subdued acoustic fingerpicking work behind her distinct vocal melodies. The recognizable pattern in "You Were Meant for Me" outlines the harmony of four chords: Cadd2 (C-D-E-G), G6/B (B-G-D-E), Cmaj7(C-E-G-B), and Em7(E-G-B-D). Of course, if you're going to compose a memorable guitar riff, it doesn't hurt to repeat it over and over again. In fact, Jewel carries out this four-measure motif through nearly the entire song." For example, if you are on America Online, you need to put your email address in as you@aol.com not simply "you" since there is no way for me or the computer to know you are on aol and not some other service provider. With the exception of one person using a browser that didn't support forms, this is the only problem we have encountered and uncovered. The next version of my program will check for basic errors in your email address before it will process your request. If you got an email saying you signed up, everything's cool and you will be contacted by your branch soon. If you didn't get a mail soon after signing up (it goes out immediately from here) then feel free to sign up again. Web signups will have priority since they came in first and don't take as much hand processing, but I will post email signup instructions soon. Over 99% (I'm not overstating this) of people have not had any problems signing up, and I'm very happy about it. :-) So everything is fine. If you haven't signed up for a tape, you can at: http://www.angelfoodbank.org If you don't have web access, you will find out how to get your request in via email in a few days. Thanks for your patience! If you have questions, you can ask them to info@angelfoodbank.org, or if you have technical problems signing up on the site, you can address them to webmaster@angelfoodbank.org which will go to me. It appears the paper went to print too early for a review of the whole concert itself. The story was accompanied by a very nice photo of Jewel in her new, black, cowboy hat over the caption: "Jewel Kilcher; dream comes true".) "Jewel of a singer charms fans" By Michael D. Reid, Times Colonist staff "It was a dream come true -- for the artist and audience -- when Jewel performed a hotly anticipated concert at Legends Thursday night for winners of a contest celebrating the second birthday of The Ocean FM 98.5. The 23-year-old, crystal-voiced folk-pop sensation from Alaska says she used to pray that someday she'd be able to support herself by 'living my passion' and to 'touch a crowd and move yourself at the same time.' Judging by the reaction, Jewel Kilcher did exactly that for 450 listeners and Ocean clients. It wasn't the Super Bowl, where Jewel performed the American anthem for millions of TV viewers last month, but there was no less humanity as the poetic, delicately charming songstress sang a selection of songs including hits from her album Pieces of You. 'I work with kids and I've been using Jewel as a positive media image for women,' said Kim Thomas, 30, a program supervisor with Kidzone, James Bay Community School after-school-care program for 9 -12 year olds. 'I admire Jewel, I don't worship her.' Response to the contest was overwhelming, said Michael Forbes, who co-hosts The Ocean's morning program with wife Lisa Marshall. 'The fax machine has been going non-stop,' said Forbes above the steady whir of a machine Thursday morning as it spat out hundreds of entry forms clipped out of ads in the Times Colonist this week. Like last year's intimate Hootie and the Blowfish concert, the Jewel event was staged to thank Ocean listeners, said program director Gorde Edlund. 'It's also our thank you to Victoria for making The Ocean its No. 1 music station." He said more than 6,000 entries had been received for one of 98 pairs of the coveted wristbands worn by concert-goers who started lining up as early as 5:30 p.m. for the 8:30 p.m. show. The demand was so high 'it literally blew out the fax machine' he added. Some fans went to comical lengths to try to score tickets. 'When we go into Starbucks there's a guy who greets us by wearing an Ocean logo on his forehead and singing, 'These foolish games are tearing me apart... Your thoughtless words are breaking my heart,' recalled Edlund, quoting lyrics from Jewel's chart-topping Foolish Games. Marshall had an even more bizarre experience when a listener approached The Ocean cruiser she was driving and offered 'to chop off his little finger' if she could get him into the concert. 'Ahhh. People are selling body parts for wristbands,' laughed the vivacious broadcaster. Parents of Jewel's younger fans also got into the act. 'Make my kid win, will ya?' quipped a middle-aged listener on Thursday as he hastily dropped off an entry. 'He's driving me nuts.' Although Jewel can make upwards of $100,000 for a major concern, Edlund said 'she did this as a favor to The Ocean.' Jewel, who says Victoria reminded her of her native Alaska, is said to have viewed the trip here as a vacation. Since flying into town on a private jet Wednesday with her French-Canadian boyfriend, Michel Francoeur, Jewel turned down offers of bodyguards for a walking and shopping outing to buy a cowboy hat, visited her boyfriend's aunt, noshed on health food at Green Cuisine, had tea at the Empress and went horse-back riding around Thetis Lake. 'They're really down to earth,' said Edlund. 'She's just so... casual is the best way to describe it. It's refreshing.' Marion Siegel said she could have been $500 richer -- the top price she was offered for her wristband -- if she had stayed at home. 'I've had 10 calls from people wanting to buy my ticket today -- people I haven't seen in years." (And don't forget -- this concert was recorded and will be aired on The Ocean, FM 98.5 sometime soon. All those in the range of Victoria, Canada - stay tuned.) It was a special event to mark the 2nd birthday of that city's top radio station, The Ocean FM 98.5 (CIOC) - (BTW, cool name for a radio station, don't you think?). Good news for all EDAs - the Ocean arranged to have top notch recording people there (that'll make Mr. BB happy!) and the concert will be aired sometime soon on the radio. I don't think I get the signal where I live, but EDAs on Vancouver Island - hey, happy birthday Phil Poje in Nanaimo! - can record the show. Jewel's performance was 1 hour 45 minutes long and she did LOTS of talking between songs. The audience loved her (naturally) - here's what Jewel sang: Don't Boy Needs a Bike Cold Song Morning Song Enter From the East WWSYS SIBTW Satellites POY YWMFM Foolish Games (original version) Near You Always Angel Standing By Encore: Amen Fragile Flame (my request!) Nikos Jewel and Michel were both in really good spirits. Gotta give credit to the crew at the Ocean who treated them royally and to the people of Victoria who proved how receptive an audience can be... more in a bit... If you can believe it, Victoria is set to host one of the most popular artists of the '90s, Grammy winner and superstar singer/songwriter Jewel Kilcher. She brings her ubiquitous talents to Legends tonight in honor of The Ocean's second birthday, but good luck in getting tickets; it's a closed-door affair that is only accessible with wristbands previously won on The Ocean's airwaves or through a contest with the Times Colonist. Last year the popular soft-rock station staged a similar stunt by bringing Hootie and the Blowfish to town to celebrate their first year on the air. In speaking with The Ocean's Andrew Lindsay last week, Jewel was brief but big-hearted. She was busy preparing for a sound check for her performance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. 'To me, fame has never been some huge glamorous attraction,' the enthralling folkie said of her widespread popularity. 'When you're raised in a place like Alaska, I think you value what's real.' Brought up by musician parents -- her father was a successful yodeller -- Jewel was groomed to have an appreciation for music. Her music was her life and by the time she had moved to San Diego to play the coffeehouse circuit and live in her Volkswagen van, Jewel was noticing the effects her talents had on people. 'I hoped that just because I got into the music business I wouldn't have to appeal only to 12-year-olds,' she said earnestly, 'because my original shows in San Diego had a real mix in age.' Jewel's star has risen like a comet since her debut album was released three years ago. That album, Pieces of You, started slowly but steadily gained popularity with everyone from kids to adults to alternative rockers to electronic music fans. Judging be her recent performance of the U.S. National Anthem at The Super Bowl, her soon-to-be--released book of poetry, her in-the-works movie and her basic knack for all things adorable, Jewel is proving to be as precious as the gem her name summons forth." Jewel's character, Sue Lee Shelley, should be quite a challenging role. It's an incredibly violent story, but such were the times. It also gives a whole nother perspective on many of the senseless goings-on during the Civil War, that "US History classes" neglect to teach. After all the pain & violence the lead character (Roedel) experiences, Sue Lee brings back hope for the future, renewed strength & changes him for the better spiritually. Not unlike the effect some of Jewel's songs have had on many people here. It's obvious to me what attracted Jewel to this particular part, besides the opportunity to work with such a gifted director as Ang Lee. If only I had known.........oh well, enjoy......Carrie Chatty Angel Jewel films segment for ABC special at Java Joe's By George Varga POP MUSIC CRITIC February 11, 1998 There were nearly as many fans gathered outside Java Joe's Monday night as there were inside the intimate Ocean Beach coffeehouse, where Jewel performed for an invitation-only audience of no more than 75. The desire to hear the top-selling San Diego singer-songwriter was so great that several fans unsuccessfully attempted to gain access to Java Joe's through a side window. And the queue in front grew boisterous enough that a San Diego police officer was called to ensure the crowd remained calm. But at least part of Jewel's Monday performance will be seen and heard by millions across the nation in May, when she'll be featured in the two-hour ABC-TV special "Where It's At: Rolling Stone's State of the Union." A specific air date will be announced soon. The two-hour show will feature interviews with such pop music icons as Courtney Love, Keith Richards, Salt-N-Pepa, Marilyn Manson, Sean "Puffy" Combs and the Beastie Boys, with additional commentary from Walter Cronkite, Tom Wolfe, actors Johnny Depp and Michael Douglas, Rosie Perez and others. But Jewel, whose 1995 debut album recently passed the eight million sales mark, is one of only four artists who will be interviewed and perform in the special. The others are Beck, Fiona Apple and Bruce Springsteen. "We see Jewel as one of the most significant artists of the last couple of years -- someone who's in the position of having come from such a unique background and having skyrocketed to stardom," said Rolling Stone contributing editor Anthony "Andrew" DeCurtis, who is serving as "State of the Union's" editorial and music director. "We're exploring fame and where things are going for young people in this country, and we think Jewel has something to say about that. She and Fiona Apple are certainly the two youngest stars we are featuring." For Jewel, 23, being filmed at Java Joe's was a return to her roots. She got her start five years ago -- first as a waitress, then as a performer -- at the original Java Joe's in Poway. The Inner Change in Pacific Beach, where she was heard and signed by representatives of Atlantic Records in 1993, is defunct. Jewel's Monday performance focused mostly on new or unrecorded material, including the spare yet evocative "Winter Song," the heartfelt lament "Fat Boy" and an untitled country waltz that featured some lovely yodeling. She was joined by frequent musical partner and ex-Rugburns leader Steve Poltz for "Silver Lining," a slyly engaging song the two co-wrote that appears on Poltz's upcoming solo album. "Steve is responsible for discovering me at Java Joe's," said Jewel, who co-wrote her chart-topping hit, "You Were Meant For Me," with Poltz. "I told him, 'Steve, how can I have a following like yours?' Now I've gone platinum, and he's gone double tinfoil." Copyright 1998 Union-Tribune Publishing Co. Between a break in the songs he sang with Jewel, she whispered something to him and then he said to the audience "oh yeah, Jewel will be playing two songs here at Java Joes on Monday around 7, so everyone come and see her".....so me and my friends tried but found out when we got there that it was a "private" recording...there were 2 police officers there and after a while of standing there with about 10 others hoping they would let ANYbody, the officers kindly told us to leave (we were standing under the "no loitering" sign after all, heh)......so monday was kind of disapointing, but its nice to hear that it was the Rolling Stone special, pretty cool. Greenfield" To: jewel-news@jane.smoe.org Subject: Jewel News: Steve Poltz -- The Livingroom Tour Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hi, all! The following article appears in the February 14, 1998 edition of Billboard Magazine (at pages 12, 15): MERCURY WANTS STEVE POLTZ'S NAME AS FAMILIAR AS HIS FACE By Carrie Borzillo Los Angeles -- Most people know who Steve Poltz is . . . they just might not realize it yet. He's the songwriter who co-wrote Jewel's hit "You Were Meant For Me," the handsome man in that song's video, and the leader of one of San Diego's most popular bands, the quirky Rugburns. Now, after writing literally hundreds of songs, the 37-year-old Poltz is adding solo artist to his list of credits. His debut album, "One Left Shoe," coming from Mercury on March 17, is a 15-song collection of confessional straight-from-the-heart love songs. The album was recorded live in the studio with producer Steve Soles and features such guests as Jewel, Van Dyke Parks, Benmont Tench, and the Mighty Mighty Bosstones' horn section. Poltz -- who was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and lives in San Diego -- was actually approached to record a solo album even before the incredible success of "You Were Meant For Me." The A&R executive who signed Jewel to Atlantic, Jenny Price, wanted to sign Poltz to the label at the same time. He passed. Price later moved to Mercury and again approached Poltz; he then said yes. "He is an amazing live performer," says Price, VP of A&R at Mercury. "He brings the record to life live, which is something a lot of artists can't do." Poltz says he wasn't ready to sign with Atlantic at the time he was asked. "I have this wild side in me that wanted to, but I was having too much fun driving around the country in a van [with the Rugburns]," he explains. "It's easy to hide behind humor and the moniker of the Rugburns, but it's scary to lay your heart out on the line. I'm a wuss." It must be pointed out how vastly different the Rugburns' music is from Poltz's solo material. The Rugburns wrote hilarious songs with such silly titles as "Pile On The Hangover" and "My Carphone's On The Pill," and Poltz performed them many times donned in a dress. In contrast, Poltz's solo material is more serious and sentimental. "I think the true Rugburns fans are going to be really into [the new album], because every Rugburns album had a few sensitive songs," says Poltz. "But I'm sure for some it won't be their cup of tea. And to them I say, 'I'll do another Rugburns album, but for now I hope you like this.'" Michael Halloran, PD at XHRM San Diego, says Poltz is "one part Neil Young, one part Loudon Wainwright, three-quarters Randy Newman, and two parts James Taylor, Jonathan Richman, and Bob Dylan. He's that troubadour guy with the guitar who can go out and play any street corner." That's exactly what Poltz did before forming the Rugburns. He set out with his guitar for Europe and played street corners. After his return to the U.S., he formed the Rugburns. They recorded three albums: "Morning Wood" (Bizarre Planet, 1993), "Mommy, I'm Sorry" EP (Bizarre Planet, 1994), and "Taking The World By Donkey" (Priority, 1995). A few years ago, Poltz met Jewel and gave the singer her first break at the Innerchange Coffeehouse in San Diego; that eventually led her to a record deal. She even co-wrote a Rugburns song ("Old Lover's House") and appeared in the band's video for "Hitchhiker Joe." Jewel returned the favor when she signed with Atlantic by co-writing two of her album's songs with Poltz: "You Were Meant For Me" and "Adrian." Poltz also plays guitar on her album. For Poltz's album, Jewel co-wrote "Silver Lining" and "I Thought I Saw You Last Night"; she sings backing vocals on the latter and "Impala." [ed. note: Jewel also sings back-up on "Silver Lining"; and I think Steve said she wrote "One Left Shoe" with him.] With the connections between Jewel and Poltz, it's certainly natural that Mercury will want to tap into Jewel's fan base to help spread the word on "One Left Shoe." [ed. note: It really feels "weird" to be typing this out.] "People certainly know his face because of the 'You Were Meant For Me' video and the VH1 ["Hard Rock Live" Jewel] special," says Ken Weinstein, director of product development at Mercury. "His middle name is 'That Guy In The Video,' but hopefully that'll turn around. We need to connect the dots out there for people." Even if Poltz didn't have the Jewel connection, Bob Bell, new-release buyer for the 225-store, Torrance, Calif.-based Wherehouse Entertainment chain, says his album would still make it. "It's strong enough," he says. "It will happen regardless of who he's worked with before." Weinstein is tentatively planning to have Poltz embark on a "living room tour" at the homes of "Jewel's World Wide Web site fans, who call themselves the Everyday Angels. "We want to get to those people because Steve's all over the Everyday Angels' Web site," he says. "We'd want him to play a coffeehouse at night, and earlier in the day he'd play a living room of one of the Angel's houses. Nothing's been put in motion yet, though." The label also wants to make sure Poltz hits the markets in which the Rugburns opened up for Jewel in early 1997. On Tuesday (2/10), Poltz, who is booked by Creative Artists Agency, heads out for a West Coast and Southwest tour. More dates will follow closer to the album's March release date. "We're going to be very mindful of his hometown San Diego, too," says Weinstein. "We're looking at doing a midnight event there and a big party the week of release, including one or two small theater shows." In addition, a promotional EP will be available to press and radio and as an added-value piece at retail. That CD features three songs on "One Left Shoe" and three bonus tracks (Poltz's acoustic version of "You Were Meant For Me," "Satan's Choir," and "Nice Guys Finish Last"). The Paul Simon-ish first single, "Silver Lining," will officially be serviced to college radio on Monday (2/9) and to triple-A, mainstream rock, and modern rock on Feb. 16. Top 40 will follow. XHRM is already playing "Silver Lining" and receiving a positive response, says Halloran. He says the album has at least five songs that can be worked to radio. Judd" To: Jewel@jane.smoe.org, Jewel-news@jane.smoe.org Subject: Jewel News: What is the AngelFood Bank(AFB)? [LONG] Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hey, This is very long but it addresses all the questions we've run into I thought would be common to more than a few of you. Since the AngelFood Bank(AFB) is well into offering its first tape (Future Folklore v3) it's probably a good time to give everyone some background on how the project came into being and what it's all about, so here goes. Ever since the early days of the jewel list (1995) people have been asking for audience recordings of Jewel. It makes sense considering an appreciation for Ms. Jewel is what initiated interest in the list and acts as the glue which holds it together. But the jewel list is about much more than getting tapes, and the frequent requests to the list (although often generously fulfilled) can be disruptive to its central value- the introduction to and constant evolution of our online community. The community has been evidenced in many EDA gatherings and events, and because of it even greater opportunies such as Jewelstock, the EDA Foundation, etc. have been brought to us. It's rare to find an artist who is as supportive and appreciative of her internet fan base as Jewel has been to us even before most people had heard of email, the web, or chats. What is the purpose of the AngelFood Bank? I started it as an unofficial organization of volunteers who want to give the gift of Jewel's music, but it's turning into much more through the contribution of some great ideas and the charity of a special group of EDAs. Put simply, through a web site people are able get tapes. All they have to do is sign up on the site and eventually (I'm working on program changes that will give assignment to a volunteer taper immediately) they get an email introducing them to a volunteer taper commonly called a branch. They then coordinate with the branch (according to guidelines set by the AFB) for sending in a blank tape in exchange for one containing the recording they desire. Currently only Future Folklore v3 is offered, but plans for more are in the works. What are the benefits of the AFB over tradition list tape requests? Things that come to mind: o more focused mail on the jewel list o high quality second generation recordings for anyone who asks o lightens some of the workload in administering/managing the jewel list o greatly reduces workload in contributing new distributions to the list o partially automated for previously restrictive growing number of fans o a constant, reputable resource with an email address to address problems o vacation from volunteering without effect on steady distribution o pages for description of tapes and tracklists o volunteers get special benefits for their outstanding service (in addition to the huge reward of the opportunity to spread the music and helping starving angels) and excellent quality first generation recordings off the masters Future benefits in the works: o instant assignment to a volunteer taper o more error checking for submitted email address o original color Jcard downloads for tapes o area for photos and stories of events o administration area where volunteers can increase or decrease workload o online signup to become a volunteer o any other great ideas you can come up with (email me!) In closing, I can't thank the charter volunteers enough for sticking with me in the months of development and growth it took to get this project started: Alan Bershaw and Mike Connell for their support and advice Tamera Sawyer, who answers mail at info@angelfoodbank.org and helps administer the project All the wonderful volunteer tapers, in no particular order: Gerry Lipnowski Chris Groves Marian Veselcic Albert Sze-Wei Wang Jay C. Johnson Mary Nguyen Mykle Mariette Tom Miles Karen Boysen Ben Wu Matthew Milner Amy Keegan Sabre Mahaffy Tamera Sawyer Michael Garnett Julie E Graham Tammy Campbell Jon Hamilton Kate Burris Brandi Powell Scott Broughton Lily Ash And finally last but not least I'd like to thank the sometimes forgotten creator of the jewel list and administrator, Jeff Wasilko. Without his efforts (and the efforts of the jewel-news moderators) we wouldn't be reading this. You can sign up for Future Folklore volume 3 at http://www.angelfoodbank.org If you'd like to volunteer to help out as a branch, have good quality recording equipment, and are willing to make time, please email info@angelfoodbank.org There is currently no way for you to support the project by donating money due to legal concerns, but ideas and volunteering your time are most welcome! Everything the volunteers have done has come out of their own pockets from MrBB on down. If you'd like to send little Jewel related gifts for me to distribute to the most active volunteers or have any need for snailmail correspondance, you can use this address: AngelFood Bank P.O. BOX 748 Auburn, AL 36831-0748 Why did I take on this project? A friend of mine introduced me to something called The Forum offered by Landmark Education. It's an inquiry into what it means to be a human being. In their courses I learned how we can become more related to others through contribution to and communication with our communities. The AFB came out of a class I took with them called the Self Expression and Leadership Program. Stuff you should at least check out as most of you would find it rewarding and a surprisingly valuable contribution to your lives. It's not for everyone, but many of you would get alot out of it. 'nuff said. I saw a need for the AngelFood Bank and felt I could contribute my time and talents to you best through the creation and development of this project. By facilitating the distribution of Jewel's and similar artists' music I'm helping spread the enjoyment and philosophy of the artists which in turn communicates my own interests, beliefs, and values. I've gotten very positive feedback- thank you for appreciating our work! :-) Happy Valentine's day. You can still show love even if you don't have that special person right now (I seem to be in that position myself :-) just look at the people around you. It's really a great book with a lot of color photos, some of them I haven't seen before. There's one of her at Interlochen, a picture of her with Sean Penn (not the one on the internet), and one of her with Michel. There's a section that explains the meanings and stories behind each of the songs on POY, all from Jewel's point of view. The EDAs begin to get mentioned on pg. 33. The whole Chapter 7 is all about us. About Jewelstock, the James ?(something...sorry, my memory is bad) foundation, the blood drive, Jewel's official star, the EDAF, etc... Dennis Harris is quoted on pg. 36 talking about the earlier days of the list: "'We became very close friends,' says Dennis Harris. 'Someone once posted to the list that we started out as fans of Jewel, and became fans of each other.' The forty-year-old from Massachusetts explained taht he first saw Jewel in The Wizard of Oz, and then became interested in her music. He liked what Jewel had to say. 'She has a great head on her shoulders, and her message is one of hope and inspiration.'" Pretty cool... :) And then there's a part where Dennis talks about the EDAF: "Harris stresses that the foundation is not a fan club. 'The Everyday Angels Foundation goes beyond Jewel and her music,' he says. The foundation hopes to support worthy causes all over the country through extensive volunteer programs. 'We want to make people aware teh we are indeed each other's everyday angel.'" There's an entire chapter devoted to just Jewel quotes from different press magazines, most of which we've probably all heard already. They're so good and honest that reading them again seems like you're reading it for the first time. Then the book gets more cooler as they start talking about Jewel's atrological signs. On pg. 58, it says that the Gemini's motto (Jewel's sign) is "I Can Do Anything." Well, I can't argue with taht considering her acting goals and her goal to write an autobiography. The very end of the book is a Jewel glossary. :) In the "G" section, it says that Georgia named May 23rd (Jewel's birthday) as Everyday Angel Day. :) Well, that's about it. The bookstore said that this book's publishing date was April of '98. It's very new, and they still didn't have it out on the shelves. I had to ask them to get it from the backroom. So, what's been happening with the EDAF lately? I haven't heard anything from it in a while... One more good news. I got another reply from a different poetry publishing Co. that wants to publish another one of my poems. Whohoo! :) One last month and another this month. :) Again, all Jewel-inspired, of course. :) The Distant Angel :) __________________________________________________________________ (` + + | _ +| Inside my heart there's an empty room. _)|)(||`|<_\ +| It's waiting for lightning; it's waiting for you. + | mark + + | -=Jewel "Absence of Fear"=- __________________________________________________________________ [Its the James Kalanick Foundation - James M. As many of you know, Jewel's favorite album growing up was "Ella Fitzgerald Sings The Cole Porter Songbook". Late last year Ella's label back then, Verve, remastered those recordings for the first time from the actual masters. Now, not only do they sonically blow away any previous versions, but both volume 1 & 2 of "EFSTCPS" is in a nice 2 CD package & includes a few alternate takes previously unissued. It's really a nice little package. I picked it up a few months ago & have been really enjoyiong it. Jewel & Lenedra both picked it up a few days ago. If you're already hip to Ella, you'll love the upgraded versions & if youre simply curious which album most influenced Jewel vocally, this is it. (It also contains the definative version of "Too Darn Hot") Previous inferior versions of these albums are still in stock at a lot of stores, so if you want this, make sure its Verve Records catalogue # 314 537 257-2. (Note: this is a Verve item #, NOT a phone # to order! Any respectible CD store can order it for you) Make sure its the 1997 Master Edition release with that item #. Hope this helps some of you. I just wanted to welcome any feedback, opinions, criticism, reviews or questions as these recordings begin to circulate. I'm also curious if enough interest is there to make FF1 & 2 available again sometime later this year. I hope FF3 turns you on to something new & provides a much needed Jewel fix to those anxiously/patiently awaiting the new album. Feel free to let me know what you think once you get the tape. I also want to publicly thank James Judd who set up the Angelfood Bank & easy EDA online signup program. It's working like a charm! Also, as usual, a big thanks to Dennis (always lurking now) Harris! He personally made every one of those jcards you'll all be recieving! And please remember to thank your volunteer branch once you do recieve your tape! They're workin hard for you. :-) Best wishes, MrBB If you have no idea what I'm talking about, please visit: http://www.angelfoodbank.org/ From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Fri Feb 27 09:00:43 1998 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/jewelq-jane) id IAA01398 for jewel-news-outgoing; Fri, 27 Feb 1998 08:46:16 -0500 (EST) Received: from m2.boston.juno.com (m2.boston.juno.com [205.231.101.199]) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/daemon-mode-relay2) with ESMTP id BAA26764; Fri, 27 Feb 1998 01:14:03 -0500 (EST) Received: (from twh662@juno.com) by m2.boston.juno.com (queuemail) id BUX06530; Fri, 27 Feb 1998 01:07:33 EST To: jewel@smoe.org, jewel-news@smoe.org Date: Fri, 27 Feb 1998 00:57:50 -0500 Subject: Jewel News: E! The three E! hosts were Todd Newton (TN), Melissa Rivers (MR) and David Adelson (DA). Here's the transcript give or take a few words. (DA) did the interview. START OF INTERVIEW: (DA) I'm here with Jewel, a multi-Grammy nominee Jewel, and brother Atz. Nice to meet you sir. (A) You too. (DA) How do you spell your name? (A) A-T-Z (DA) A-T-Z. Atz. Jewel, you once said when you recorded POY you expected it to sell maybe 35,000 copies. Now, it's going, what, almost 10 million internationally and counting. Obviously, you're surprised? (J) I am surprised, especially for a Folk Album. (DA) And it's interesting, also, that the Grammy voters love you. They nominated you twice last year and once this year. What does Grammy mean to you as an award? (J) I don't know really. It's interesting. I have a better feeling for the audience, the fan base, the voting polls.... It's nice to be recognized by your peers... (DA) Now given that this has been such a whirl wind on the last record, have you had time to write songs and to record songs for a new album? (J) I recorded a whole new album a year and a half ago, but POY started doing really well, so it's kind of in the can. I'll have to re-record. But I'm doing a book of poetry of mine own poetry, it's called "A (K)night without Armor", coming out in May, I think. And, I'm also doing the lead in Ang Lee's new film. So it's a lot of work. I don't think the album will happen for a while. (DA) Have you started shooting the film? (J) No, I start on the 1st. (DA) Are you nervous about that? (J) Yeah, it's a very rigorous career, a very rigorous endeavor, it's very emotional and really exciting. (DA) So all eyes will be peeled on you as embark on a film career and obviously there's expectations for a follow-up record too. Are you going to let that impact you at all? (J) That's ok, I feel comfortable. It's been FIVE years since my 1st record. I've written TWO HUNDRED SONGS since then and I've just gotten better. I've matured. (DA) Atz, are you also an artist? (A) Yeah, music, guitar, harmonica, mouthheart(?), a little bit of everything. (DA) That's great. Are you looking at doing a professional career as well? (A) Yeah, it all starts with coming out with her every once in a while and getting out of Alaska and getting a little bit of insight. I definitely benefit from being able to go watch what she's done and just a great example for me to follow. END OF INTERVIEW BACK IN STUDIO: (DA) As a man, I'm not ashamed to admit that that young lady makes me weak in the knees :-) She has quite an acting career ahead of her..... Obviously, a long, long career ahead of her.... (MR) Oh, she's adorable. (TN) She has one of those albums that just will not stop. _____________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail.
