Jewel didn't get any awards or finish in the top 3 of any of the Critic's polls. Two upcoming TV shows featuring Jewel (albeit repeats) may be of interest to EDAs ringing in the New Year, both on the US cable channel VH1. First of all is the documentary series called "Behind The Music", which later today (Thursday) will feature the "behind the scenes" show on last summer's Lilith Fair tour. Jewel is interviewed several times during that hour-long show, which airs tonight at 6:00pm Eastern/Pacific, and again at 3:00am Thursday night(Friday morning), again Eastern & Pacific times. If you haven't seen it, it's a good look at last summer's Lilith Fair tour, which as we all know was probably the most successful event in the music business last year. Also, VH1 will be airing the performance of "The Wizard Of Oz" that Jewel starred in back in 1995. That will air tomorrow (Friday) at 9:00pm Eastern/Pacific and again on Saturday at 4:00pm, East./Pac., and its length is two hours. As Mike Connell, our hardworking list manager without whom we would not have our list & who deserves a special "Happy New Year" from one and all, posted the other day--this "Wizard Of Oz" Jewel show seems to be aired by VH1 on and around holidays, so if you haven't seen/taped it yet you may want to do it this weekend, 'cause it may not be on again for a while. (I have more info about "The Wizard Of Oz" that I'd like to share [*not* about the one that Jewel was in], but I'll save that for another post). --------------------------------------------------------------- JEWEL ON VH1-- "Behind The Music" documentary about Lilith Fair, Thurs. 6pm & 3am; "The Wizard Of Oz", Friday 9pm and Saturday 4pm. (all above info from http://www.rockontv.com) ---------------------------------------------------------------- Once again, A VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ONE AND ALL !!!!!! As you know, Jewel's New Years Eve show was pretty miserable. Not the type of place conducive to Jewel's music..... In happier news, we're getting the "Future Folklore Volume 3" distribution plans together. James Judd & his Taping Army will assist the EDAs this time administrating the FF3 Tree. Huge thanks to James for taking the plunge on this monumental volunteer job! We'll be making instructional announcements soon, so everyone can experience the magic of the Java Joe's EDA Thanksgiving gigs. (If you don't know what I'm talking about, the original post about FF3 follows this short message). I've been trying to figure out ways to improve the "tape tree scene" on the Jewel list & one thing that will be very different this time is that the FF3 tape will remain available indefinately. This means as new people sign on, they'll still be able to get the FF3 tape from various dubbing sites. We also plan to simply post when signup is available. No leaf/ branch requests or any of that involved in signing up. If you want the tape, you'll simply contact the administrator, who will assign you to a branch/dubbing site. That easy. :-) Expect those instructions in the next two weeks or so. Finally, Wendy (the soundman & "house personality" at Java Joe's in Ocean Beach) is visiting us here in New England & says hi! Hope everyone is having a wonderful start to 1998! Talk to ya all soon, MrBB Previously sent FF3 Info: Hello all EDAs, This post is going to be long & hopefully an enjoyable read. (I hope this formats OK on various email systems.) I just want to thoroughly update you & share my excitement about the soon to be FREELY distributed "Future Folklore" Volume 3. The master is finished & I LOVE IT! The music is all incredible & the tape flows real nice & captures the atmosphere during the EDAF Thanksgiving gigs pretty well. You'll be happy to know that ALL the artists authorized material for this, so Jewel, Cindy Lee Berryhill, Joy Eden Harrison, Gregory Page, Elizabeth Hummel, Tara MacLean, Lisa Sanders & Mary Dolan are all featured on the tape. Anyone interested in Jewel's music will certainly welcome a perfect recording of the extremely rare unreleased gems "Jessica" & (the rare operatic treat of) "Lasciatemi Morrire". But it's really the other artists that I think will amaze many of you. Jewel came out of an incredibly talented "scene" in San Diego, which is still very much alive & well! Jewel & these other musicians & songwriters (with the exception of Tara) are all intertwined & connected. I hope you take the opportunity to follow the forthcoming instructions & get this FREE tape while it's being treed in excellent quality. Any Jewel fan on this list who doesn't bother to pay attention is truly missing the boat! I hope to have an admistrator in place in the next few weeks. (and have the finished jcards.) Then we'll get this free distribution off the ground. As always, the tape will be available by sending a blank cassette & return postage & mailer to a person who you'll be assigned to, by the administrator. **IMPORTANT!!! PLEASE WAIT UNTIL INSTRUCTIONS ARE POSTED IN MID JANUARY BEFORE EMAILING ME TO REQUEST THIS TAPE!! What follows are my notes about "FF3", including official finished tracklistings, credits, thank you's & technical info, etc. I think it will answer any questions about the tape you may have. Read on & I'll update you on "tree progress" ASAP. *************************************************** "Future Folklore" Volume 3- NOTES FROM MrBB When I put together "Future Folklore" Volumes 1 & 2, I concentrated on fairly complete performances by Steve Poltz, Cindy Lee Berryhill & Elizabeth Hummel (taken from two EDA events that were documented back in April of 97). For Volume 3, I've selected highlights from both evenings at Java Joe's during the EDA Thanksgiving Weekend of 11/28 & 29/97. There's really a great diversity to the music on this compilation. Powerful & emotional songs from Lisa Sanders, Mary Dolan & Tara Maclean. Updated traditional approaches from Elizabeth Hummel on her dulcimer. Joy Eden Harrison swinging & singing the blues. The sentimentally seasoned songwriting of Gregory Page. Jewel belting out Monteverdi accapella for some culture. And finally my personal favorite, Cindy Lee Berryhill & her Garage Orchestra taking us to "Pop Heaven", when not leading us to some other planet altogether! I think you'll find all of the performances to be enjoyable at the least & mind blowing at the most. For those who enjoyed Cindy Lee & Elizabeth on FF1 & 2, this material is very different than those performances. Elizabeth rocks when playing dulcimer! And Cindy Lee......awesome! On the previous tapes you listened to a unique folksinger, but here those songs are strange & beautiful pop-symphonys that are totally infectious! Although diverse, theres a continuity in listening to these artists together. There1s strong friendships between them all & a never ending support of each other that has impressed me from the minute I was taken in by this San Diego scene. It1s similar support & friendships that are developing & spreading around the planet now by the EDAs, I think. Both sides of the tape end with the humor (& looseness) that these events so often inspire. There's a feeling in the room during these performances that I can't describe accurately. I have tried to capture it on the recordings & I think I've succeeded to a certain extent. By suspending very high quality microphones out of the loft over the stage, I was able to blend the "room ambience" into a soundboard direct stereo mix which fed directly into the decks. This enables the listener to enjoy the clear definition of vocals & guitars that a direct soundboard feed provides while still having the ambience & dynamics that only a room recording done with excellent microphones can provide. I mixed these sources direct to digital while it happenned & after analysing it, I felt no post-production or EQing was needed at all. It really sounds that good! I hope you all enjoy the recordings on Future Folklore Volume 3. It was an unforgettable week of good friends, hilarious parties & great music! What else is there, anyway? Future Folklore Volume 3 is dedicated IN LOVING MEMORY OF KENDRICK For "Future Folklore" Volume 3, very special thanks go to: *Neil Sturtevant for his generous help with recording gear in San Diego. *Wendy & Joe at Java Joes for accomodating the EDAs & my "special needs". *The Morales Family for dedication in planning & hosting these events. *John Walker for being our friend & chauffer-extraordinaire. *The EDAs who made these events unforgettable *The musicians for such inspiring performances! *AmyJo for putting up with my continued insanity. *Lenedra & Jewel, Cindy Lee & Paul and Elizabeth All recordings mixed & mastered live direct to 2 track digital by MrBB. All of the artists represented here have authorized the use of their recordings for this non-profit project. "Future Folklore" Volume 3 SIDE A: "Welcome To Java Joes"-Wendy "Truly Divine"- Lisa Sanders & Mary Dolan "Where Melancholy Goes"-Mary Dolan "Rainbow"- Lisa Sanders & Mary Dolan "Let Her Feel The Rain"- Tara MacLean "Silence- Tara MacLean" "Jessica"- Jewel "Lasciatemi Morirre"-Jewel "Love Lies Broken"-Elizabeth Hummel "Are We Gonna Get Naked"-Elizabeth Hummel "Goodwill Store"-Elizabeth Hummel w/Jewel & G. I hope this series will continue to inspire many more music related events in the future! This will bring back great memories for those who experienced these shows & I hope it helps to share the experience with those unable to attend. A high quality recording of "Jessica" is probably the most common "dream request" from Jewel tape collectors. This one will certainly fill that need real well! Ah.....& finally, Cindy Lee Berryhill & Garage Orchestra. Truly one of the most wonderful things I've ever listened to! Everyone this week was great, but Cindy Lee is from another planet altogether! Fortunately for me, so am I. ;-) MrBB *********************************** New to the Jewel mailing list? Eventually I will set a deadline for you all to send tapes to me, because I'd like to start doing another tape, but that won't be for awhile. To anyone who has already received instructions: Please don't forget to send me a return mailer! I need a padded envelope to send it back to you. Also, some of you have been sending me money instead of stamps. PLEASE don't do that! If you do, I have to go to the post office to mail your tape, and I don't have time to go that often. If you send me stamps, I can just put your tape in the mailbox and you'll get it within a week of when I receive your tape. This is pretty simple for you to do, and it saves me the hassle. According to the Dave Letterman/CBS website a repeat airing of the 6/2/97 show with Jewel, Elle MacPherson and Vince Vaughn will be on this Monday the 19th. All I remember from this show is she sang an emotional Foolish Games with a small band/orchestra (I kinda remember a cello?) and she seemed tired as she had just gotten back from her May '97 European tour the very day before. If recording, set your VCRs to record extra time, as Letterman at times runs a few minutes late and Jewel is always the last guest....on right at the end of the show. (I can't remember what happened this time for sure, but she has always been on at/near the end of the show in past appearances....it's usually an ongoing list-joke that to tape Jewel on Letterman, all you had to do was record the last 6 minutes of the show ;) Mike :) * If you are new to the Jewel list and need a helping hand * The Jewel EveryDay Angels List Homepage & Guide is at: * http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup * * If you have list related questions, feel free to email me * at Ducksoup@spectra.net * * DuckofPrey@aol.com WhyADuck55 on AOL Instant Messenger From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Tue Jan 20 03:29:37 1998 Return-Path: Received: by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4-jewelq-jane) id DAA05254; Tue, 20 Jan 1998 03:22:52 -0500 From: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Message-Id: <199801200822.DAA05254@jane.smoe.org> To: Jewel-News@smoe.org Date: 19 Jan 98 18:36:46 -0800 Subject: Jewel News: MrBB-Update on Jewel tracks on Steve Poltz album Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk content-length: 658 Hi all, Here's some info that should make all Jewel fans quite happy, since there has been some concern as to which songs (if any) might feature Jewel on Steve Poltz's solo album. I've been told that all three of the tracks that Jewel recorded with Steve have made the final cut & will be included on the CD tracklist. They are "Impalla", "I Thought I Saw You Last Night" & "Silver Lining". In addition, the title track, "One Left Shoe" is also a Poltz/Kilcher collaboration (although Jewel does not participate on the studio recording). Steve's CD "One Left Shoe" will be released by Mercury Records on March 3rd, 1997. Jewel will be doing several high profile TV appearances over the next two months & here's some details. First, regardless of rumors to the contrary, Jewel is still singing The National Anthem at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego during The Superbowl! This takes place on January 25th. She'll be singing the opening accapella. Then piano, cello, guitar and muted trumpet will back her as they build the song up to the fireworks and pomp that's during the pre-game show. The rehearsals take place on January 23rd & she'll be doing some national press on that day, so look for her on many news & informational shows. Jewel will be taping a NEW Rosie O'Donnell show on February 1st. This will air the following day on February 2nd. She'll also be performing on a NEW Tonight Show soon, but I haven't the exact date available yet. Will let you all know ASAP. Other things that I haven't yet officially announced are: January 26th- The 25th Annual American Music Awards, Los Angeles,CA February 25- The 40th Grammy Awards, NYC I'm not certain yet whether Jewel will perform at either of these major awards shows, but she will definately be attending. They have been about list members possibly meeting up in New York City to try to get in via the standby line, or just meeting for the heck of it, and about methods of getting regular tickets. The truth of the matter is, Jewel will be on the first show Rosie is having on in her visit to Los Angeles (for two weeks starting Monday February 2nd). Also, according to the Rosie web site on the internet (not the AOL site), ticket requests for the Los Angeles shows had to be in by December 26th. So, it looks like the only way to get in to see the show is to show up very early at NBC Studios in Burbank California on Sunday February 1st (Jewel's appearance is being taped that day) and beg or bribe someone with tickets or be lucky in a stand-by line, if they have one out there. Lenedra told me there is a possibilty that it may be switched to January 28th or 29th, though. I'll have confirmation on the date early next week. Jewel will not be performing at the AMA Awards, but will be attending. The performance slots for the Grammies have not been totally assigned yet, but a performance by Jewel is very unlikely since those slots primarily go to artists with multiple nominations. Definate info as I know it, but a performance is doubtful. Steve Poltz's solo album "One Left Shoe" which contains 3 songs featuring Jewel & a 4th written with Jewel will be released on March 10th on Mercury Records. Jewel also recorded "You Make Lovin Fun" for an upcoming "Rumors" Fleetwood Mac Tribute Album. This album was offered to Reprise who turned it down. Lava/Atlantic picked it up & will now release it on March 3rd. Two other things are of interest that are tentively scheduled for mid March. One is the highly anticipated "Lilith Fair Live" double CD. This could very likely get delayed though. More info & Jewel track info is unavailable at this time. More info as I know it. The second thing is a major celebration concert in honor of Atlantic Records 50th Anniversary. Jewel will likely perform at this although details are unknown at this time. I'm guessing this will happen at Madison Square Garden in NYC. It will feature many of the most memorable artists on Atlantics vast roster including several high profile reunions, I'm sure. I would expect this to be broadcast live in some form, but don't know any details at this time. And A Jewel Interview! Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk content-length: 2161 Hi Everybody! This is my first post! I found a two paragraph story about Jewel on pg. 88 of the February issue of Seventeen Magazine, the one with Sarah Michelle Gellar on the cover. It is titled Hollywood's Shinning New Jewel, And it is about her new movie To Live On. Here it is: Jewel is about to put down her guitar and pick up a movie script. Next month the singer-songwriter will start filming To Live On, a Civil War drama directed by Ang Lee (The Ice Storm) that's due out at the end of the year. Jewel makes her acting debut as Sue Lee Shelley, a fearless frontier woman and the love interest of both Toby Maguire and Skeet Ulrich. No, she won't be serenading either heartthrob-hers is a nonsinging role. "I've grown tired of just performing (music," Jewel told us over the phone from Europe recently, where she was finishing her two-year world tour. "I've always welcomed new challenges." As if living out of a car, selling seven million records and starring in a movie weren't enough, Jewel is also adding writing to her list of accomplishments. A volume of poetry will most likely be published this spring. A tour diary-scrapbook-set to coincide with the release of her still untitled second album this fall-is also in the works. Does this mean we'll get to analyze the superstar's handwriting? "I'll write bits in the scrapbook," says Jewel, "but the poetry will be typed." No doubt she bought a laptop for Christmas. Well, that's the article. I also found something on a homepage. I don't remember which one but I remember the address of the clip. It is a clip from a interview with Jewel done before last years Grammies. It is very nice and it starts will her singing, goes into the interview, and has clips from the first version of the video YWMFM. I'd never seen the first version before. It doesn't take to long to download and it is worth it. The address is: http://hugse1.harvard.edu/~wangal/jewelretro2.mov I'm sorry, I really don't remember the title of the page. That's it for now! The cover has a picture of Calista Flockhart of Ally McBeal fame, and the page numbers are 32 and 33. The article is about the best of 1997 in music. There isn't really much in the article about Jewel, but there is a picture of her next to a tree on 32 and on 33 there is a chart. On the top of the chart it says: "Several of 1997's top 10 sellers- including Pieces of You-were actually 1996 releases. Conversely, Flaming Pie crashed just weeks after its late May release. Proving that sometimes slow and steady wins the race- or that Jewel has legs and Sir Paul doesn't." Then in the chart under top 10 sellers Jewel is number 2 with Pieces of You with 4.3 million units sold in 1997. At number one, the Spice Girls sold 5.3 million units in 1997 with Spice. "Performance" is a strong word, because there was absolutely no doubt the stars and bars were being lip-synched. In fact, the recording kicked in a moment before Jewel was prepared to sing. And while the version she had pre-recorded was filled with passion, her stand-still performance did not. There were players featured on the tube who were belting it out with more gusto. Halftime, on the other hand, was a different story.... There's a picture of her with the following caption: Jewel's lip-synched National Anthem was less than inspired. MY PERSONAL COMMENT: I think she sang the Anthem beautifully. I just think it would be hard to be as inspired when you have to lip-synch it. Also, many past Anthems at the Super Bowl have been done this way (and last year's halftime show), so I wonder if Jewel even had the option of doing it live or this way. Anyway, if you just listen to it, it's awesome. _____________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. Instructions are included in this ridiculously long post, but for those that are new, I'm going to repost what this is all about before the instructions. There's NO HURRY, so again, PLEASE READ ALL OF THIS. First, a HUGE THANKS goes to James Judd, who's vision to improve the free tape distributions is responsible for the way "FF3" will be administrated. I also give boundless THANKS to all those generous volunteer members of the Angelfood Bank Taper Army! It's thier personal generosity of time & resources that will make this distribution possible at all. It's because of them that anyone who wants FF3 now AND in the future will have a means to do so. Many internet lists run tape trees but theres always been one very significant difference in the way its been done on the EDA list. That's the fact that we've always made our tapes available to EVERYONE on the list (at the time of distribution), regardless of equipment or their abilty to perpetuate the distribution. Only a blank tape & postage is required to enjoy our projects. If this goes well & a renewed interest in FF1 & 2 becomes apparent, we'll consider making previous volumes available again. Now on to what FF3 is all about & then the instructions. Future Folklore Volume 3 is an incredible recording of two wonderful shows that happened in San Diego during Thanksgiving weekend 1997. Many listmembers from all over North America attended. The shows were in celebration of the EDAFoundation having its paperwork processed through government channels & beginning its infancy for real. Many great musicians performed & Jewel herself made a surprise appearance to a very enthusiastic audience. All the artists personally authorized the material included on Future Folklore Volume 3. Jewel, Cindy Lee Berryhill, Joy Eden Harrison, Gregory Page, Elizabeth Hummel, Tara MacLean, Lisa Sanders & Mary Dolan are all featured on the tape. When I produced "Future Folklore" Volumes 1 & 2, I concentrated on fairly complete performances by Steve Poltz, Cindy Lee Berryhill & Elizabeth Hummel (taken from two EDA events that were documented back in April of 97). Sentimentally seasoned songwriting by Gregory Page. On the previous tapes you listened to a unique folksinger, but here those songs are strange & beautiful pop-symphonies that are totally infectious! Although diverse, theres a continuity in listening to these artists together. There's strong friendships between them all & a never ending support of each other that has impressed me from the minute I was taken in by this San Diego scene. It's similar support & friendships that are developing & spreading around the planet now by the EDAs, I think. Anyone interested in Jewel's music will certainly welcome a perfect recording of the extremely rare unreleased gems "Jessica" & (the operatic treat of) "Lasciatemi Morrire". But it's really the other artists that I think will amaze many of you. Jewel came out of an incredibly talented "scene" in San Diego, which is still very much alive & well! Jewel & these other musicians & songwriters are all intertwined & connected. (Tara is an exception but has been embraced by The EDA community) I sure hope you take the opportunity to follow these instructions & get this FREE tape while it's being distributed in excellent quality. Any Jewel fan on this list who doesn't bother to pay attention is truly missing the boat! This "tape tree" is going to be different than previous trees done on the EDA list. One major difference, is that thanks to James Judd & the new AngelFood Bank, we plan to keep FF3 available so there's no big hurry! (Of course many are anxiously awaiting it, so go for it as soon as you like!) James Judd & I already circulated 70 copies of FF3 to people around the planet & many of them will be graciously volunteering their time & resources to help all of you. ************************************************ Here's all you need do. Go to the new Angelfood Bank Website AND FOLLOW THE SIMPLE INSTRUCTIONS. The URL for FF3 signup & instructions is: http://www.angelfoodbank.org/ Once there, you'll find it easy to sign up & be assigned to a generous member of The AngelFood Bank Taper Army, who will graciously make you a copy FREE OF CHARGE. If you are in the USA, you'll simply supply your own 100 minute blank cassette & a self adressed padded mailer with four 32 cent stamps already on it. It's that easy. If you live outside the USA, simply follow the instructions for your country. NOTE: If you are one of the "web-challenged" EDAs, please do not get upset! We'll be posting instructions for you in a few days. ************************************************ Final note to everyone: Many of the goals I had with previous volumes of "Future Folklore" have already been realized, including "The Living Room Tour" & the weekend documented here. Enjoy FF3! :-) MrBB PS. Did top-selling San Diego singer-songwriter Jewel sing the national anthem live at Sunday's Super Bowl game? Or did she lip-sync it, as a number of TV viewers and Pop Beat readers maintain? The answer to that question depends on whom you ask. At a news conference at Qualcomm Stadium last Friday, Jewel said she would be singing live-to-track, which is standard procedure at many professional sporting events. It's also common practice at dance-pop concerts, which often feature vocally challenged young artists who can only dream of matching Jewel's soaring singing style in general, let alone her dignified reading of the anthem. By one definition, live-to-track means a singer is performing live over a prerecorded instrumental backing track. By another, it means the entire track -- including the vocal -- is recorded live, and the singer is lip-syncing. For TV viewers, Jewel's vocal began a split second before her mouth opened at the beginning of the anthem Sunday. Therefore, it would seem, Jewel was lip-syncing. Pop Beat, which covered the anthem live on the field from an obstructed corner of the end zone, did not have the same vantage point as TV viewers. So we called NBC-TV, which broadcast the Super Bowl, for clarification. "NBC is not in the position to do that," Ed Markey, NBC's vice president of sports communications, said Monday. "You'll have to talk to the NFL." Come on down, Steve Brenner! A veteran NFL spokesman, Brenner emphatically stated that Jewel sang live-to-track, and that indeed meant live. "She sang over a track," he said. "It was a live microphone, and she sang along with her own voice. I've been involved with the last 12 Super Bowls, and it's always been that way, where they have it on track and the artist sings along, the same way as Whitney Houston" (who did the anthem at the 1991 Super Bowl). But what about the gap between the start of Jewel's vocal being heard on TV and the start of her stadium performance just after. "There was a (technical) miscue," Jim Steeg, the NFL's director of special events, said Monday. "In fact, the whole anthem thing started about 20 seconds earlier than it was supposed to, because NBC was supposed to come back to us (the NFL producer) and they went straight to her." Moreover, Steeg said, there were actually two different audio tracks. One was completely prerecorded, Jewel's vocal included, for TV broadcast only. The other was for those in the stadium and enabled Jewel to sing live as soon as she caught up with the prematurely cued TV audio track. "One is going to the stadium, and one to TV," Steeg said. "What we were trying to do was have them be in sync. We didn't (succeed)." So TV viewers heard a lip-synced anthem by Jewel, while those at Qualcomm Stadium heard the real thing. Case settled. Right? Wrong. "Actually, it wasn't live at all," said Jewel's mother and co-manager, Nedra Carroll, who was with Jewel at the Super Bowl. She said that Jewel's microphone was a prop. "I just spoke with the NFL, and told them we would answer this question frankly." (Jewel, who was attending the American Music Awards in Los Angeles, was unavailable for comment.) "Jewel requested she be able to sing the anthem live, a cappella," Carroll continued. "They (the NFL) said they were now discouraging artists from doing it live. They thought it worked much better for artists to do it on tape." As for Jewel's comments at the news conference Friday about singing "live-to-track," Carroll said, "that was the way it was talked about, and Jewel answered that way automatically and later thought it was kind of misleading, which she didn't intend it to be." But what about the insistence by NFL spokesmen Jim Steeg and Steve Brenner that Jewel sang live? "I would anticipate both Steve and Jim were of the impression it was live-to-track, (although) I will not, and can't, speak for them," said Rob Heller, a talent consultant to Super Bowl entertainment coordinator Bob Best, who was unavailable for comment. "The fact is it (Jewel's vocals were on) a prerecorded track," Heller continued. " . . . If it was up to Jewel, she would have enjoyed doing it a cappella." While acknowledging Jewel's performance was completely on tape, Heller maintained this "certainly doesn't violate the integrity of the performance, because Jewel did an incredible job." Reached later, Brenner said, "I stand on what I said before," then added: "Basically, the NFL allows the artist to sing live-to-track, so it's up to the artist." Absolutely not so, said Carroll. "Jewel wanted to sing it live, and they (the NFL) said no. We asked them a couple of times." In a post-anthem interview Sunday, Pop Beat asked Jewel if she considered taping her vocal. She responded: "I hadn't, um, I was, I don't know; I just didn't do it." Asked to clarify, Carroll said: "All I can do is go back to what happened. She wanted to sing it live, and the NFL said no. So I guess she was thinking, 'I won't go into all of that.' I know there was no intention to mislead; it's hard to be precise in every word." The San Diego singer-songwriter -- whose debut album, "Pieces of You," has yielded three top-10 singles and sold more than 7 million copies -- performed the anthem at Qualcomm Stadium for a sold-out crowd of more than 68,000 and a worldwide TV audience of 1 billion. Her supple, soaring voice rang out strong and clear, and was free of the showboating that has marred too many previous Super Bowl anthem performances by other artists. The Grammy Award-nominated singer was accompanied by a spare yet effective prerecorded backing track of acoustic guitar, cello and muted trumpet, which she arranged herself. The audience gave the 23-year-old star a loud ovation both before and after her performance. "I just went for simplicity," said Jewel, in a post-anthem interview in her dressing room. "I would have felt silly if I'd done too many loop-de-loops, because it's not my show. And I wanted it to be elegant." While even veteran singers like Tony Bennett have commented on the technical challenges of singing the anthem, Jewel did not encounter any difficulties. "Maybe it's harder for a guy's voice," she said. "I actually enjoyed it. I like what my voice did with the high notes, and I think it's also sexy -- the low notes." Jewel's anthem performance marked her first local appearance of the year. In March she will begin filming in Missouri as the female lead in a Civil War drama with acclaimed director Ang Lee. "It's nice to be here in San Diego," said Jewel, whose mother, father and two brothers accompanied her to the game. "It's funny. I hadn't thought about singing the anthem, in terms of representing our country, and it is an honor. The Super Bowl is something you grow up with, and it's exciting to be here. When I got up to the microphone, I thought 'What's wrong with my heart?' Because it was really beating" From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Sat Jan 31 12:14:47 1998 Return-Path: Received: by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4-jewelq-jane) id MAA26055; Sat, 31 Jan 1998 12:06:07 -0500 Received: from imo17.mx.aol.com (imo17.mx.aol.com [198.81.19.174]) by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4-daemon-mode-relay2) with SMTP id QAA11480; Fri, 30 Jan 1998 16:50:12 -0500 From: ABershaw@aol.com Received: from ABershaw@aol.com by imo17.mx.aol.com (IMOv12/Dec1997) id FFYDa12122; Fri, 30 Jan 1998 16:41:54 -0500 (EST) Message-ID: <79232ab4.34d24924@aol.com> Date: Fri, 30 Jan 1998 16:41:54 EST To: jewel@smoe.org, jewel-news@smoe.org Mime-Version: 1.0 Subject: Jewel News: To Los Angeles EDAs- CLB Los Angeles gigs in February Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-transfer-encoding: 7bit X-Mailer: AOL 3.0 for Mac sub 84 Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk content-length: 668 Hi Los Angeles area EDAs, Cindy Lee Berryhill & Garage Orchestra have two upcoming gigs at Genghis Cohen this coming Thursday night (2/5/98) & again on Friday 2/20/98.
