It's finally here! (Well, it's gonna be in two days :) An excited Bibi Bielat, Jewels' close friend & Creative Director has asked me to announce the imminent unveiling of the Official Jewel web site! This web site is perrrrrty slick too! Bibi has been working on it for quite some time now and she's done an excellent job! :) Based on a prototype web page I've been able to preview, I can tell you it's got all kinds of interesting and fun sections including: 1) "HerStory" - a Jewel biography section. 2) "What, When, Where" - events (tour info) etc. There's a "clickable" link for every show/event she has scheduled. After the event occurs, the link will contain tidbits of info & news about the event. :) 3) "Lynx" - well, there be links here. Likely to other Jewel related web pages. It will also include an information blurb about the Jewel@smoe.org mailing list. 4) "FAQ" - Frequently Asked Questions & basic Jewel information. 5) "Email" - an "Email/feedback" section....not sure if it's also an "email TO Jewel" section, but it certainly is a forum to give feedback to someone on "the Jewel team" (it says "feedback") and the best three! (saved for last): 6) "Centerstage" - a newsletter/"what's happening now"/"what's happened recently" section, including pictures from backstage at concerts (Lilith Fair!!) It will also have a Lyrics section, a Jewel Poetry section and a Review section (containing published(?) reviews of Jewel shows) etc. 7) "Scrapbook" - LOTS of pictures, notes and quips from Jewel past & present. Including all three video shoots, the recording sessions for Pieces Of You and also the Woodstock/Bearsville sessions in 1996, the Innerchange coffehouse, growing up in Alaska and more to come! There is no doubt in my mind this will be a popular section :) 8) "THE JEWEL STORE"!!! - with: a) The Jewel Lyric book: the same one sold at the Lillith Fair and Papillion Tours shows. It's quite slick! 40 pages of glossy NEW pictures, lyrics and graphics! (Some live pictures are by list member Ted Berberian!!) [$18] b) Three Jewel posters - Pretty kewel too! [$8 & $10] c) Jewel Picture 5-pack - has five 9x7 pics of Jewel. On the back are drawings and poems by Jewel! [$12] d) 1998 Jewel Calender - using one of Chelsfaces words, it's real "spiiffery". This calender looks sharp! (It also uses some of Ted Berberians' photos) [$12] e) Seven different T-shirts. Some from the Tiny Lights Tour, some from the Papillion Tour, some new :) [18$ & 20$] You be able to order online (credit card only for online orders) or print out an order form & order via FAX (credit card) or print out the form & order via regular ol' mail (can use credit card, check or money order here...US funds only on checks/money orders) PLEASE NOTE FOR THOSE THAT CANNOT ACCESS WEB SITES!!! There WILL be a printed catalog available with all the merchandise shown/listed, it is not known exactly when it will be out though. Bibi told me that once the web site is launched, she will begin designing a catalog. As soon as it is available, I'll post on how/where to get one. About the catalog, in her own words, she said: "I haven't thought of how we will distribute it or how people can even send an email or letter asking for one. The web site is, for right now, the only way people can access Jewel merchandise." She also has no firm idea as to when some merchandise will hit stores. About the web site in general, Bibi says (on the prototype web site): "We are as excited as you are to finally have the Official Jewel Website. This will be your foremost source of up-to-date tour schedules, release dates and special appearances. For all the merchandise you've always wanted though it never existed, here it is!" "We hope you enjoy this site. We plan on updating this site on a daily basis to keep you informed of all that is happening with Jewel. We plan on adding new sections, like Jewel in the studio, which will include live audio clips. And Jewel on tour that will have live video clips and pictures form backstage and on the bus and anywhere that Jewel goes, we will be there. We want this site to be as fun and exciting for you as it is for us." Well, that's about it. Oooops! Oh yeah, the address of the web site...guess that would help :) It's at http://www.jeweljk.com but remember, it won't be online until Monday, November 3rd! Here's the set list.... Don't Morning Song Stranger Enter From The East Song For The Winter (New Song) Pieces Of You/w super model story Little Sister Sometimes It Be That Way Here When Gone Who Will Save Your Soul A Very Big Girl Carnivore I'm Sensitive Just Passing Time Near You Always Foolish Games You Were Meant For Me Angel Standing By Encore: Latin Song ???? Amen Chime Bells It was a great concert. For me the second best on her tour. She started at 9pm at the 'Kleine Musikhalle' (Little Music hall) with about 350 people present wearing black and brown again but different clothes. Unfortunately we weren' t allowed to take pictures during the show and security was very strict this time. They searched every bag and so I had to leave the camera at the door. But I was able to record that show, too :-) During the first three songs there were a lot of official press photographers in front of the stage who took pictures of her. It was a little bit disturbing but they were thrown out after 'Stranger...'. Good time for Jewel to make some remarks about taking pictures :-) It seemed to me that she was in a very good mood. She talked a lot at the beginning of the show but I think a lot of the people in the audience couldn't understand english and only gave little reactions so she stopped talking that much during the second half. The sound in the hall was really great. It's usually used for classical concerts and so it was specially build. I especially liked 'Carnivore' and 'Morning Song' this time. Great to hear so many different versions of these songs. But all songs were great. The audience was silent during all songs and so you could listen, well just listen.... If anyone knows something about the latin song please email me. The only words I could make out were 'in cosigrande morire' or something like this. And it sounded like taken from an opera or a church song. After the show I got outside to get an autograph but Jewel went straight to her car without signing. During the time I waited outside I met another German EDA. Hi Mathias :-) So we had a small gathering in Germany. Nothing compared to the big gatherings in the US but it's a start.... It's me the Quiet Angel opening his big mouth once again, to honor his vow as a member of this list, by reporting a media sighting of our omnipresent angel. I just recieved the latest Entertainment Weekly magazine (November 7th issue) and as I turned the pages, lo and behold, a drawing of our beloved one in Southern Belle drag revealed itself to me. She can be found, holding her lil' umbreller on page 84 where you'll also find a blurb on Jewel's new movie career that is led into with a report on Steven Tyler's (Aerosmith) new movie role. This report is written by one, Chris Willman (whom, as Mike Connell pointed out to me, has written other articles that show she/he doesn't like Jewel much), who uses Steven Tyler's movie role to damage Jewel's. Here's the reporting on Jewel plus a snippit from the Tyler piece: "Tyler, at least, had the sense to stick with a cameo for his first role not as himself...*snip*...But some musicians never learn. Jewel is reportedly set as the female lead in her first movie, a $35 million Civil War drama called To Live On, which starts shooting under Ang Lee's (The Ice Storm) direction in March. No word on whether they'll work a little yodeling into the script, as was done for Elvis' Confederate-set movie debut, Love Me Tender." Ok that's that, my lips will be ceremoniously sealed again tomorrow morning, and will remain that way for the duration of this quarter. Speak to me now or... scratch that, please speak to me! It can be found at: http://www.addict.com/MNOTW/lofi/971105/971105_1738.shtml News Flash: Indigo Girls Make Lilith Preview Lineup Also performing at Palm Beach, Fla. show will be Sheryl Crow, rapper Missy 'Misdemeanor' Elliott and festival organizer Sarah McLachlan. The lineup for the Dec. 16 preview of Sarah McLachlan's annual Lilith tour, the most popular of last summer's traveling music festivals, will feature sets from McLachlan, the Indigo Girls, rapper Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott and Sheryl Crow. The preview for the second annual show is expected to include artists already recruited for next year's festival tour. The Lilith Fair, which was the first summer festival tour to promote female musical artists only, while supporting various women's causes via information booths set up at the festivals, will take place at the Coral Sky Amphitheater in W. Palm Beach, Fla. "Basically, Sarah wanted to both put together a show and preview some of the artists that will be on the tour next year," Arista Records publicist Cathryn Swan said. "They wanted to do the show in Florida because it was one of the places they weren't able to hit last time." The Florida preview will feature more main stage artists to be announced soon, as well as second stage sets from K's Choice and Chantel Kreviazuk and a still- unannounced lineup on the acoustic Village stage. More performers for both those stages will be announced at a later date. In addition, a two-CD set of live Lilith material will be released in March of 1998 and a two-hour pay-per-view special chronicling the Aug. 15-16, 1997 dates of the tour's stop at Toronto's Molson Amphitheater will air on Nov. 28 (check local listings for time and price). The special will feature footage of the tour's stop in McLachlan's hometown, with performances from Sheryl Crow, Shawn Colvin, the Indigo Girls, Meredith Brooks and others (Jewel :)!) . The special will also feature interviews and backstage footage. Additionally, on Nov. 16, VH-1 will air a one hour "Behind the Music" documentary on the tour. In its first full year, Lilith handily outpaced such summer package veterans as Lollapalooza and H.O.R.D.E. (Horizons Of Rock Developing Everywhere) to capture the undisputed crown for most successful multi-artist summer tour of 1997. -- Gil Kaufman [Wed., Nov. 5, 1997, 9:00 a.m. PST] Peace, Jeff :) From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Thu Nov 6 09:59:47 1997 Return-Path: Received: by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4-jewelq-jane) id JAA04291; Thu, 6 Nov 1997 09:41:18 -0500 Message-Id: <199711061441.JAA04291@jane.smoe.org> Date: Wed, 05 Nov 1997 01:28:10 -0700 From: Tom Morales To: Gerrit Kruidhof Cc: jewel@smoe.org, jewel-news@smoe.org Subject: Jewel News: Itinerary for EDAF Thanksgiving (Please read carefully) Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk content-length: 5200 Hi everyone. Plans keep growing and evolving. So it is time to set everything in stone. In this post you will find everything you need to attend all the events or whatever parts you can make. All I ask is that you send me an email letting me know which part you will be going to; as it will make it easier to make things run smoother. As some of you might know we now have Tara MacLean flying in to participate in the EDAF launching. So with that in mind this holiday will be one incredible event after another. Below is an itinerary of the events tentatively planned (almost completely confirmed). Wednesday-November 26-Living Room Concert (at the Morales- Boos house)-Scheduled to play: Tara MacLean, Gregory Page, Frank Drennen (of Loam), and possibly Elizabeth Hummel. Starting time around 7:00 P.M. Those of you flying in or driving a long distance, plan on spending the night. So bring a sleeping bag and toiletries; especially a towel for showers as we don=92t have too many after our fire. If you are not making any of the other events, this would be a good time to bring those used clothes for the =93Jamaican Family Clothes Drive=94. Ther= e is no set fee to attend but donations will be accepted to cover refreshments and gas money for the artists. =20 Now for directions: Take the 5 freeway (from San Diego go north, from Los Angeles go south) to Capistrano Beach. From the north, Capistrano Beach is just south of San Juan Capistrano. From the south, Capistrano Beach is just north of San Clemente. Exit on Camino De Estrella. From the north, turn left over the freeway bridge and go to the second light right in front of the Unocal Station. From the south exit on Camino De Estrella and turn right to the first light right by the Unocal. You will need to immediately turn left at the light on to El Molino.=20 Continue on the residential street to the second stop sign where you will turn left on to Calle Juanita. You will then come to another stop sign and to your right you will see a park called Sunset Park. Go straight through this stop sign and then make your first left on to Calle Carmelita. It will be difficult to see the street sign but if you just veer left you=92ll make it. The house is a blue Cape Cod, address 34445 Calle Carmelita, three or four houses down on your right. If you have any trouble call us at 714 443-3623. Thursday-November 27-Thanksgiving Get Together With Rachel=92s House at 2:00 P.M. This is a women=92s shelter and the purpose of the visit is not to feed them, as they will be having their meal at the Hard Rock Cafe earlier that day. Our sole purpose is to socialize and visit with them and just give them a little of our time. If you=92d like to bring books or magazines, flowers, or an instrument to play I=92m sure it would be appreciated. Or if you=92re a hairstylist or know how to give a good manicure feel free to bring the tools of your trade. To get there take the 5 south to downtown San Diego. Exit on Broadway or G Street. Turn right and head west 10 blocks or so to 8th Street.=20 If you were on G Street turn right and if you were on Broadway turn left on to 8th Ave. The shelter is at 759 8th Ave., San Diego, CA 92101. If you are in our caravan you won=92t have a problem finding it, but if you plan on meeting us there and have a difficult time finding it; here is the phone number-619 696-0873 (ask for Yolanda Dodd). Friday-November 28-EDAF Thanksgiving Brunch at the Morales-Boos Houshold. Meal time will be somewhere between 11:00 A.M. and 12:00 P.M. Since we will want to get an early start down to Java Joe=92s for the big concert.= =20 We will be cooking or catering this so any donations will be greatly appreciated. Dennis will be our main chef and if you have ever tasted Dennis=92 epicurean delights this is something not to be missed. For directions see the above directions for the Living Room Concert. Both are being held at our home. Friday-November 28-Pajama Jam EDAF Concert at Java Joe=92s-4994 Newport Ave., Ocean Beach, San Diego. 619 523-0356 The concert will be featuring Elizabeth Hummel, Lisa Sanders, and Gregory Page. Quite possibly Tara MacLean will be making a guest appearance. She will be definitely in attendance. Tickets are $10 and those planning to attend will be asked to bring used clothing for the =93Jamaican Clothes Drive=94. This concert is the hard work of all EDA=92s and will be the culmination of The EDAF launching. We are contacting as many newspapers, tv and radio to publicize all the events taking place; especially this one. So tell all your friends and aquaintances and invite them along. I=92d like to thank Karen Richardson, Larry Greenfield, Dennis Harris, Alan Bershaw, and my lovely wife Nancy for all the time and effort they have put into the Launching of the EveryDay Angel Foundation. I=92d also like to thank Igor, where ever he may be, for setting a lot of the ground work with the James Kalanick foundation. Without him taking that bull by the horns none of this may have been possible. And if you need more information than this you can contact us at milagro4@primenet.com or 714 443-3623. The story follows: "Music to Her Ears" Jewel Kilcher, the 23-year-old singer-songwriter better known as Jewel, who grew up on an Alaskan homestead without television or running water, has just made a $2 million, two-book deal with Harper-Collins. In keeping witht the wholesome tenor of Jewel's multiplatinum-selling debut, Pieces of You, the first book, due in June '98, will be an as yet untitled volume of poetry. "They're typical girl stuff," an editor at a rival house says of the poems. "Falling in love. Wanting to ride a horse. That kind of thing." The second book, timed to conincide with her second album next fall, will be a memoir/scrapbook. --by Matthew Flamm Why is EW always looking for a negative slant when it comes to Jewel? -- Best Wishes, Frank Clark Simply Jewel http://www.geocities.com/~simply_jewel From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Fri Nov 7 18:39:53 1997 Return-Path: Received: by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4-jewelq-jane) id SAA24970; Fri, 7 Nov 1997 18:38:05 -0500 Message-Id: <199711072338.SAA24970@jane.smoe.org> Date: Fri, 7 Nov 1997 15:25:51 -0600 (CST) From: Thomas A Baas To: jewel@smoe.org Cc: jewel-digest@smoe.org Subject: Jewel News: PRINT MEDIA: Jewel in Shephard Express Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk content-length: 285 There's a really nice one page article on Jewel called "Utopia in My Van" in the Shephard Express, a Milwaukee newspaper-like music scene publication. Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk content-length: 1596 You Were Meant For Me was released for the third time today (10th November 1997) in the UK. It's the European version containing the bonus tracks Cold Song and Rocker Girl. The first time it was released it managed a lowly 53 in the official UK charts. The second time it didn't make the charts. This is certainly Jewel's most visible release in the UK, with some record shops displaying the single in the their windows. With Jewel performing live this Wednesday on BBC1 I'm pretty sure this will see Jewel's best single performance to date, although it only has to enter the charts higher than 52 which is what Who Will Save Your Soul achieved. However she is still getting very little radio play. Here's a bit more information on Jewel's TV appearance on Wednesday 12th November on BBC1 at 8:30 PM. According to the official Jewel web page, Jewel is 'to appear on Englands most popular TV variety show, "The Lottery Show".' A bit of an exaggeration I think. The lottery show is a 15 minute programme broadcast twice a week, it's main purpose to draw six numbers for the UK's official lottery. Each show has one music act singing one song. The show broadcast on Saturdays receives the largest audience of about 10 million viewers. The Wednesday show usual gets about 5 million viewers. However Jewel has been rather fortunate since nobody won the Jackpot on Saturday (quite a rare occurence), the money (8 million pounds) is carried over to Wednesday's draw and so she can expect a much larger TV audience. If you've never read it or are simply curious about what happenned prior to the POY album being released, please take a look at: http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup/jhistory.htm From what I hear, Kris Kane has been diligently working on an "official" bio of Jewel that will soon be available on Jewel's site. With his writing talent, I'm certain his will be far more stylish, comprehensive & entertaining than mine could ever hope to be. I look forward to reading it. A bunch of people have asked me why the Jewel Performance Chronology has been taken down from the Pieces Of Jewel site. At the moment, Adam is working on enhancing the features on it. We've also come to a point where I needed it to be copyrighted & registered & that is being taken care of now, as well. I now have info on almost 1000 Jewel performances & we hope to include setlist buttons for all you tapers & "AngelFood" collectors out there. Stay tuned..... The UNICEF Benefit in NYC is still on Jewel's schedule for December 10th & it will (as far as I know) be televised live on the TNT Network. BiBi is probably holding off on putting this up on the website until more details are known. I'm still waiting to hear whether the New Years Eve gig at Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas will be simulcast live or not. I'm sure VH1 & MTV will be there, but haven't any more info at present. The Rugburns will be joining Jewel for this. I'll be talking to Lenedra soon about the books & album session plans, but haven't any new info to pass on at present. Thats about it for today. A brief overview of new releases, dates, etc follows this message. Hope everyone is doing well & we'll see many of you in San Diego over Thanksgiving very soon! Lisa Sanders is also possible as are other surprises. Quite the cast of EDA characters will be on hand & a night of great music & EDA hilarity is assured. Thursday-Nov 27th-"Thanksgiving Get Together With Rachel's House" at 2:00 P.M. This is a women's shelter and the purpose of the visit is not to feed them, as they will be having their meal at the Hard Rock Cafe earlier that day. Our sole purpose is to socialize and visit with them and just give them a little of our time. If you'd like to bring books or magazines, flowers, or an instrument to play I'm sure it would be appreciated. Or if you're a hair stylist or know how to give a good manicure feel free to bring the tools of your trade. To get there take the 5 south to downtown San Diego. Exit on Broadway or G Street. Turn right and head west 10 blocks or so to 8th Street. If you were on G Street turn right and if you were on Broadway turn left on to 8th Ave. The shelter is at 759 8th Ave., San Diego, CA 92101. If you are in the caravan you won't have a problem finding it, but if you plan on meeting us there and have a difficult time finding it; here is the phone number-619 696-0873 (ask for Yolanda Dodd). Friday-November 28-EDA Thanksgiving Brunch at the Morales-Boos Household. Meal time will be somewhere between 11:00 A.M. and 12:00 P.M. The Morales' will be cooking or catering this so any donations will be greatly appreciated. Dennis Harris will be the main chef and if you have ever tasted Dennis' epicurean delights this is something not to be missed. Friday evening- Nov 28th- Java Joe's EDAF Pajama Party, Ocean Beach, CA This will be the official public unveiling of the EDA Foundation. Confirmed performers include: Gregory Page, Elizabeth Hummel, Lisa Sanders & special guest Tara Maclean. Other great San Diego talent will be on hand, so other performers are likely. This is open to the public during regular hours & will become a private all night EDA party after "closing time". This is guaranteed to be an unforgettable night! Saturday- Nov 29th- Java Joe's, Ocean Beach, CA Cindy Lee Berryhill & Friends. Joy Eden Harrison is flying in from Chicago & will be the 1st performer that night with her combo. Cindy Lee will be performing with former members of her incredible Garage Orchestra & resurrecting some amazing material. This will also be a VERY memorable night. Sunday- Nov 30th- EDA Concert I'm still very vague on this, but I'm told several EDAs will be performing in an afternoon concert. Perhaps the organizers of this can re-post details on location, time, schedule, etc.... EDAs from all over North America will be on hand for many of these events & its sure to be another legendary week in the history of this list. I plan on elaborately recording all the performances on Wednesday, Friday & Saturday & if authorization is given, the next volume(s) of "Future Folklore" will hopefully contain the highlights of this week. I'm sure there'll be many! Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk content-length: 2256 Hi there, I just got back from Ghent where Jewel played the belgian part of her european tour. It's probably no real news to you when I tell you she played an awesome set. I'm sure she got a lot of belgians interested in her music now. I wasn't the only EDA at the show. A lot of Dutch EDA's came to Ghent as well. I got to meet them before as I also went to the concert in Amsterdam (Marcel will tell you more about this part of the tour). So now maybe in future we can have our own european EDA-gathering !?! Europeans let me know when you wanna... I'm glad to see it's starting to go well for Jewel in Europe (at last). Here in Belgium they re-released POY last week. I work in a CD store in Antwerp and last week POY was among the top 15 best selling-albums !!!! :-) I also just checked the Dutch charts... and FG is climbing 32!!! spots in the national chart... bringing FG to the number 50 position. As it is the most added song on one of the major stations there this week she'll probably go top 10 within the next two weeks. Back to the concert... Jewel played the first part of the show wearing a kind of cap. As soon as the pictures are developped I'll make sure to scan them so that you can see what I mean. As to our suprise she did not open with "Don't"... the set was as follows: - Stranger (Enter from the east) - (We're gonna try to figure out this song when we hear the tape... A videotape has been made of the four (five ?) first songs--then the battery went flat) - Don't - Pieces of you - Everything breaks sometime - Race car driver - Cold song - Morning song - My fish family (I'm not sure 'bout this title, because I didn't hear it before) - Little sister - I'm sensitive - 1000 miles away - Who will save your soul - Jessica !!! - Daddy - Let it fly - Last dance rodeo - Near you always - Foolish games (accompanied by piano) - You were meant for me - Angel standing by **--ENCORES--** - Latin song (written by Andrew Lloyd Weber--don't know the title yet) - Amen - Chime bells Tomorrow there will be an accoustic performance on the belgian radio... I will let you know what that was like and I will also inform you on how the belgian press reacts on the Jewel concert. I'm on my work now so I'm still in shock what happened last night. *** AMSTERDAM (Netherlands) 11-09-1997*** I will start with Amsterdam last sunday the 9th. Paradiso is a beautiful place for a Jewel-concert and she mentioned it also. I had second row seats and my friends were on the first row. Only seats this time. Her voice was great. She wore a black T with a bit of purple-brown trousers. Not very special but she looked like Jewel :-) Allright, The setlist now: Don't (no surprise here but one day later ....... !!) New Song (was it "Kiss The Flame" or something like this???) Emily (An request of a friend of mine :-)) Pieces of You Little Sister Everything breaks sometime Sometimes it be that way Morning Song Cold Song Satellite Innonance Maintained (YES YES YES --> MY REQUEST !!!!!!) Who will save your soul Enter from the east Daddy Fragile Flame Passing Time Near You always Foolish Games Carnivore (It was good to hear it again. Very nice song!) You were meant for me Angel standing by (Dedicated to Mother Theresa !!!!) 1st encore: _________ Italian song Amen 2nd encore: __________ Too Darn Hot Chime Bells (Still there are lots of people who haven't heard it before...) 25 songs and a lot happened. During the third song we had some nice flickering candles and she loved it. In Gent we did light the same but they stink this time more. Jewel had comments on that and we felt sorry for it. It was a nice look but you can't use it in every room we experienced. (Note to jewel:If you read this: We are really sorry the candles did stink. Thanks for not letting your evening be ruined by this thing.) Foolish Games was really emotional, great, loving, and more. The stories were before POY about the supermodelconvention and about Pittsburgh and her dad. I didn't heard that Pittsburgh story before.... After Chime Bells she signed several things and she signed my album-cover. It was a rememorable night. My friends met Jewel at the Hotel in Amsterdam. They knew also that she would be travelling by train to Gent and at what time. They took the same train and spoke a few words to her again at the trainstation....... (she travels first class and is carrying her two guitars herself. (BTW: Nice hat Jewel !!!!) ***GENT (Belgium) 11-10-1997*** She played very different songs over there. She started with Enter from the east !!! A real surprise because we had bets on Don't :-)) Jorgen Van Geffen will write the setlist on this list so I just pick some songs out of it: Jessica !!! She played that on request for a guy that travels with her. Was this her boyfriend? The guy enjoyed and Jewel had troubles reminding the words :-) It was cute because she laughed she didn't get is right on time. Another song (I don't remember which one) she had made up the last words also. She is so honoust to tell us but a real EDA will hear it anyway :-) Doesn't mind....... She played I'm sensitive, Last dance Rodeo, and more extraordinary songs. The Belgium audience was going mad. Afterwards they stormed to the stage. Signing records and stuff was not planned. Jewel got scared and what happened was foolish ! It was like Michael Jackson was playing Gent or something like that. This is not Jewel-like. Hope this won't happen again on a new tour. It was disgusting. She was brought to her car supported by 5 very big guys. A blinded van drove to the hotel. We were guesing which hotel and we were right. We were standing with six people at the front of the hotel and there was the bus........ But she didn't got out of the car. Her manager and her pianoplayer got out to see howmany people are standing over there. She drove away and we were feeling sad. At the time we would like to went home we saw at 500 m. distance a car standing with the alarm-lights on. At it was THE VAN !!!! We ran and Jewel was having a burger at a restaurant..... Nobody recognized her there (but we did :-))) The people in the restaurant were lookin with a face that says... "what is going on her and who is that woman over there" :-))) She was friendly, and I asked her if she had a reason for playing two complete different setlists in two days. She said: "No (smiling), It had just fun doing it, I was not thinking about it" . After the signature on my album last night, I let her sign my Jewel Poster I got in a recordstore before the concert. I said to Jewel that the show was perfect. Jewel was kind, and seemed to be surprised we did all this to see her. Jewels guitar-tecnician (and manager if Alan isn't available???) was very good to us. After the show I got an EDA pick from him and I would like to say thank you if you are reading this !!!! Summary: -two fantastic concerts in two days -I got an EDA-pick - I got a signed poster (print is the new cover of the cd...) - I got a signature on my white albumcover!!! AND I HAD A SMALL TALK WITH JEWEL !!!!! What a rememorable days those were !! Thank you for your time. I have asked some friends to write something down also. I will write it here in an integral way later. About tape-news in the next mail. Th= ere is no set fee to attend but donations will be accepted to cover refreshments and gas money for the artists. Or if you=92re a hairstylist or know how to give a good manicure feel fre= e to bring the tools of your trade. Friday-November 28-Pajama Jam EDAF Concert at Java Joe=92s, 8:00 P.M. 4994 Newport Ave., Ocean Beach, San Diego. I first found out about it on my birthday back in August and since then, I've been counting the days. I managed to secure tickets through Way Ahead on the web. They were the cheapest around. They sold me seats in the stalls but couldn't tell me where. In retrospect, this was a mistake as they ended up giving me row P which turned out to be the very last row. I still had a perfect view but was envious of Chris Groves who managed to get 3rd row seats. So, the day finally arrived. Some one told me that Jewel had been on Channel 4's Big Breakfast program teaching the presenters how to yodel. I think I'll have to see the video before passing final judgement on that one. My day in college finally ended and I went home, dumped my stuff, picked up the tickets and went off to meet the rest of my group, there were 8 of us in all. On arrival at the Empire, we made our way to the front door. All bags were being searched on the entrance for whatever reasons. Once inside, I could quickly establish the mood of the venue. Now the history of the place is actually quite interesting. It used to be owned by the BBC and was used as a television show theatre (BBC television centre is about half a mile up the road). It's last job before closing down was hosting Terry Wogan's chat show back in the 80's. It was then refurbished and reopened as a music venue. The usual Rock venue design decisions are all in place. The stage level (stalls) has 3 separate bars and is usually standing or dancing. Luckily tonight, the temporary seats had been brought out of storage. Although initially disappointed with our seats, we were reassured once we realised the view wasn't actually that bad. However, the seats were very close to the rear bar and the noise from there plagued the entire show (more about this later). I found Chris Groves sitting in his prime view seat and he introduced me to another EDA (sorry I've forgotten your name). The show was stated as starting at 7.30pm but only at 8.20pm did Simon Warner finally appear on stage and perform. Now those of you who read my Bloomsbury Theatre review last month may remember what I thought of this man but those newbies out there may not have heard of him. He is a British singer who has opened for Jewel at every one of her European shows and to be honest, I really can't see why. His music varies from mediocre to down right annoying and pointless. Just his song titles are enough to make you want to cry: 'Passionate Ticket Collector', 'Kitchen Tango' and 'Dead Beat Inside' to name but a few. Luckily, he finished after about 35 minutes and left the technicians to set up for the great lady herself. Heeeeeerrrrreee's Jewel - ----------------------- At about 9.15pm, The lights finally went out and the applause began in anticipation. After a moment, Jewel walked out onto the stage and picked up one of her guitars. She was wearing a black sleeveless vest and black slacks. Without saying a word, she started singing 'Enter >From The East'. It seemed to me that she was taking the vocal leaps with caution but it didn't spoil the beauty of this wonderful piece. 'Everything Breaks Sometime' was next without a break followed by 'Don't'. The reaction from the crowd was healthy and encouraging. Early on in the show I was aware of the amount of movement amongst the crowd. People got up and down casually and security guards linked by radios were darting everywhere, reacting to every camera flash. They kept the rear bar open throughout the entire show and the noise coming from this and the surrounding people was almost intolerable. Jewel introduced 'Satellite' with her story about the fascination with power in Hollywood. After that had finished she started to play the opening to 'Pieces Of You' when the stage lighting suddenly changed. It was enough for her to turn to the lighting guy and say, "Your getting a little carried away aren't you.". Anyway, 'Pieces Of You' was the first song that got some recognition from the audience. Afterwards a guy came up to the stage and handed Jewel some red roses. They were still there on the stage after she finished. The next song was quite new to me even though I have a RealAudio recording of it. She introduced it with a story about hitch hiking and serial killers but only when she mentioned the name of the song did I realise what it was. It was, of course, 'Nicotine Love'. The opening guitar phrase on this song is probably it's best feature and gives the song a retro avant-garde feel. I certainly hope I hear this song again in a better form than RealAudio. Jewel started to play 'Daddy' when the stage lights suddenly started strobing. Obviously, the wrong control was pushed somewhere. Jewel didn't stop playing but turned around and gave the guy such an evil look. It was also around this point that the noise around the bar was getting to an apex and some people were obviously getting on edge because of it. The odd "Shut Up" was audible amongst the sound. 'Who Will Save Your Soul' was next with a wide recognition from the entire audience. It seemed as though the appreciation of the song gave Jewel a little more confidence and enthusiasm for the piece as she gave it her best for the ending. I clocked the final 'your' at over 15 seconds and as the crowd went wild, she climaxed with a great vocal and power guitar coda. 'Sometimes It Be That Way' came next followed by a slightly slower and slightly raunchy version of 'Race Car Driver'. I don't know if I've asked this one before but near the end of the song when she performs in America, does she ever compare her vocals to Right Said Fred's 'I'm Too Sexy'? Every time she's played it here in the UK, she's made the comparison with quite a good response. 'Morning Song' was next on the list, sung with it's usual kookiness and abstract innocence. Jewel then gave us an enjoyable rendition of 'Cold Song', even if she did have to slow down and concentrate on the doyoudoyouwannawanna bits. A passionate rendition of 'Last Dance Rodeo' was next followed swiftly by 'Near You Always'. As at the Bloomsbury gig, Simon Warner's pianist then came on the stage to accompany Jewel to 'Foolish Games'. She managed to put quite a bit of emotion into the last chorus, which was enough to put a chill down my spine. The performance was even enough to bring silence to the bar as people became captivated by the moving vocals. Jewel then took a quick break to tell us about her time in the UK over the past couple of days. She had recorded 'You Were Meant For Me' for BBC's Top Of The Pops program. The single for 'You Were Meant For Me' had been released this Monday and should hopefully appear in the Chart this weekend. By her own admission, she pointed out that she wasn't TOTP material yet (currently dominated by the likes of the Backstreet Boys and Spice Girls). She said that the performance would most likely be kept on hold until she achieves some real success in the charts (a bit of a chicken and egg problem. How can she get into the charts without as much PR as possible?). She explained how most of the people there had no idea who she was even pointing out how Moby thought she was a tea girl or something. In the process of trying to get to the stage, she explained, many of the 'cute people in cute clothing' wouldn't let her through because they thought she was just someone trying to push in. She also said how she managed to get chocolate (Kit Kat - her favourite she claimed) down her trousers before the recording and without a change of clothes, was forced to perform with the stain. I hope the BBC show the performance just to see if this was true. She also talked about getting up early for her appearance on the Big Breakfast and how thrilling(!) it was to be interviewed by puppets (Zig & Zag for the MTV Europe fans amongst you). From what I hear, most of the presenters including the puppets got to talk to her during the show but I haven't actually seen it yet to confirm this. All of this lead to her asserting her only desire after all these events is to chart (godamnit) to make worth it. As expected, she finally gave a good performance of 'You Were Meant For Me' to the audience. Her final song of the set was 'Angel Standing By'. It wasn't long before she came back for her first encore due to the enormous applause. I was expecting her to sing a little Cole Porter but she sung an operatic aria instead. It was quite remarkable to hear Jewel sing with an almost operatic vocal mode and the choice of aria was perfect. I think the words were either French or Latin and I THINK the title may be 'Ma Chantee Libre' (Mr.BB can you verify this?). Many of my friends thought that this piece was her defining piece, separating her from other female artists by demonstrating her incredible vocal and dynamic range. 'Fragile Flame' was next. She then started to play the opening to 'Amen' and was about to start singing when someone shouted something from the audience. She had to stop and scold the man for interrupting her when she was trying to sing. She started again and this time managed to give a full and moving rendition of the song. Again she left the stage, this time to a standing ovation. The audience was still up when she returned for her second encore. Someone shouted for the yodelling song to which she replied, "Alright, just because you asked for it". Before starting, she told us about her appearance on another Channel 4 show today called 'Light Lunch' (Not exactly prime time or a ratings grabber). Someone shouted out that she needed better PR to which she retorted, "Shut up, they're good people." Anyway, she said how they asked her to teach yodelling to their chef (they actually cook and serve a light lunch to their guests on live national TV. Thrilling huh?) while the chef was cooking a Baked Alaska (!!). She gave a good rendition of 'Chime Bells', which got the crowd clapping along, and it ended with a great high-speed yodel. The standing ovation was instant and she seemed honestly flattered by it. She curtsied and left the stage for the final time. This performance brought Jewel's European Tour to a close. As usual, there are many things that could have been done differently that might have helped promote her even more. One thing that my friends and I discussed was her need for a British contact that knows which places are best to get at the right target audience. For example, if she did a live session on Virgin Radio or BBC Radio 1 it would have been great. Chris Evan's TFI Friday could have been the perfect vehicle for her on TV. As for the Top Of The Pops recording, that should have gone out tonight to make sure that the single gets as many sales in it's first week as possible. As always, Radio airplay was heavily lacking during this tour. Especially this week, I haven't heard any Jewel at all on the Radio to promote the single. In conclusion, Jewel delivered the goods with the immense style and grace we have come to expect. The experience was only slightly marred by the strange operations of the venue: Heavy security reacting to every camera flash, the bar being kept open during the performance keeping the noise above an acceptable level, people moving about during the performance often blocking the aisle and my view! And not forgetting the lighting guy who just seemed to get too carried away sometimes. A definite 9/10 experience. I can't wait to see what 1998 has to offer. He did not have a broadcast time nor info on possible VH1 repeats, (nor is this info available at this time) but he said that knowing VH1, and the fact that "Jewel is very ratings-friendly which is why they love broadcasting her specials", it will likely get some additional airings. Of course, VH1 will be announcing air times on air soon :) This is a very rare and prime opportunity for many Jewel fans to finally get a tape of this show, as it has not had a *national* airing in nearly two years. The show is officially called "The Wizard Of Oz In Concert - Dreams Come True". Taped at the Avery Fisher Hall (Lincoln Center) in New York City on November 5th 1995, it had its' premiere television airing on TNT on November 22nd 1995 (also Thanksgiving) with a handful of repeat airings on TNT over the next month. While sporadically seen on various PBS stations over the course of the last two years, it has been a hard find indeed. Released on CD (Rhino Records - R2 72405) and VHS video about a year ago, while the CD is relatively easy to find, locating the video is a near impossibility anymore. (It's out of print) The show itself was a charity fund raiser, benefiting the Children's Defense Fund, as are the sales of the video and CD. (from the CD...."100% of the net proceeds from the sale of this CD benefits the Children's Defense Fund") With Jewel as Dorothy (the witches' Dorothy?), the show features some interesting names in other starring roles. Nathan Lane: pretty much stole the show as the cowardly lion. Lane IS Bert Lahr in this....you may know him from the film "The Bird cage" with Robin Williams. In that film Nathan played....well....he wore a dress most of the time) Roger Daltry: the lead singer of The Who is the Tin Man. His version of "If I Only Had A Heart" was produced as a "Who" number...really kewel!! Crank the stereo when this number comes on :) Jackson Browne plays the Scarecrow (no comment, except I think this role was miscast) Joel Grey, a veteran Broadway (Cabaret) & film actor plays the Wizard. For the younger list members, Joel is Jennifer Grey's father (Jennifer played Ferris' sis Jeannie....ain't I just full of trivia tonight? :) Natalie Cole is the Good Witch (small role if I remember correctly) The Boys Choir Of Harlem play various Munchkin roles (and Toto too!!) and a few other "names" make brief appearances in minor roles. Then there was Jewel. Ahhh Jewel! :) Fond memories indeed :) This show was the first I had ever seen or heard of her. I was intrigued from the first moment. The previous days' preview of the show in the USA Today hooked me initially (I've been a huge Wizard Of Oz fan for ages...still a kid at heart) and their mention of "The sultry Jewel starring as Dorothy" piqued my interest too. Watching the show for the first time, I was mesmerized by her. Infatuated. "Sultry" indeed, of course I was impressed by her singing, but her peculiar voice inflection when she spoke her roles hooked more and I saw (I HAD to) nearly every repeat of the show over the next month to "get more of this Jewel". (My VCR was in the shop) Thing is, I had ZERO idea she was a singer by trade, I just thought she was some new Broadway musical star on the way up. I took her to be about 26 to 28 too (she was 21). After the airings ended, as I thought she was "Broadway" and I'd likely never see her again, I rather quickly forgot about her. Forgot about her that is, until early April of 96. I was home sick with mononucleosis (for 5 rotten weeks) and with being house ridden 24/7 nearly all my time was spent surfing the net (I had JUST gotten my net account) and watching VH1. That early April Saturday night I saw Who Will Save Your Soul for the first time. "WOW" I thought, "This is that gal from the Wizard Of Oz" :) So, at about 10pm that night, minutes after the video ended, with about a 102 degree or so fever and sweating like a madman, I drove to WalMart and bought Pieces Of You. I was floored. The CD (with some exceptions) blew me totally away. (I'll admit it, I totally missed the point of the song Pieces Of You just like most of the folks who first hear it) Playing the CD nearly non-stop and surfing the web for more info about Jewel (like most of us have at one point) I found the original EveryDay Angels web site (now at http://www.smoe.org/lists/jewel/angels), which was back when there may have been a half-dozen Jewel web sites period. In the wee hours of the morning I joined this list. Back then, just 19 months ago, there may have been 400 members total on the regular list and Jewel-digest combined. (There are nearly 2800 now for the THREE versions of the list) It's really odd how things/fate works out. Mid-April '96 I was home quite sick with mono. Usually NEVER watching MTV or VH1 and really not listening to "todays' music" that much at all, I saw Who Will Save Your Soul for the first time, buy POY and joined the list the next day. Three months later I was fortunate enough to be the lucky one to introduce Jewel to the crowd at JewelStock. I've met nearly 300 EDAs/list members over the course of my so far 19 months on this list. I've had some of the most enjoyable times of my life at EDA gatherings meeting everyone. Some of you I consider my closest friends. Ya know, I may be the only person on this planet who is grateful for having gotten mono :) Mike :) * The Jewel Mailing List Netiquette & New Member Guide is at: * http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup * * If you are new to the list and need someone to guide you * please check out the "Adopt A Newbie" page at: * http://www.geocities.com/wellesley/3079/newbies.html * * If you have list related questions, feel free to email me * at Ducksoup@spectra.net * * DuckofPrey@aol.com WhyADuck55 on AOL Instant Messenger From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Mon Nov 17 14:02:43 1997 Return-Path: Received: by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4-jewelq-jane) id NAA08704; Mon, 17 Nov 1997 13:58:17 -0500 Date: Mon, 17 Nov 1997 13:58:17 -0500 Message-Id: <199711171858.NAA08704@jane.smoe.org> Received: from easynet.co.uk (kiwi.easynet.co.uk [193.131.248.4]) by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4-daemon-mode-relay2) with SMTP id NAA08642 for ; Mon, 17 Nov 1997 13:49:48 -0500 Received: (qmail 26075 invoked from network); 17 Nov 1997 18:49:31 -0000 Received: from cmgroves.easynet.co.uk (193.131.249.192) by kiwi.easynet.co.uk with SMTP; 17 Nov 1997 18:49:31 -0000 From: "Chris Groves" Subject: Jewel News: UKJC:Jewel on BBC radio tonight. There is no reason to be concerned about any order. I've recieved many emails about orders & I just want to ask you to be a bit more patient. The website has only been up for less than two weeks! It takes a little time to process orders. So, expect a few weeks wait before an order is delivered to your door, please. Although unconfirmed, I'm fairly certain that Jewel is performing on December 10th, in NYC for the UNICEF Benefit. This Benefit will feature a large roster of artists, so it is NOT a Jewel Concert. Quite likely Jewel will perform one song, so its nothing to get crazy about regarding tickets. I think this is at Madison Square Garden but I'm not really sure. I am sure, however, that this benefit will be televised on TNT Network with or without Jewel. BiBi will have info on this on the website if & when it is confirmed. Also, the Nobel Peace Prize Concert in Oslo Norway is confirmed. Jewel, along with Sinead O'Connor, Boyz II Men & others will perform at this on December 11th. Anti-landmine activist Jody Williams will be honored at the concert, and some of the proceeds from the show will go to the international campaign to ban landmines. AmyJo is in a "lyric transcribing" mode, so she'll try to get a few of Jewel's new song lyrics posted over the next few days for your reading pleasure. :-) Best wishes, MrBB *********************************** New to the list? Just in time for Christmas or Chanukah or Kwanza or the Winter Solstice or for nothing in particular I am reposting the EDA Shirt information. I have about 50 shirts left from my last order that are taking up an awful lot of room in my house. This may be the last batch I get (I am thinking about retiring as T-Shirt Guy) so if you want one here is all the information you need. The shirt first became available back in May. Now that the list is up and running again and all is right with the world. thought this would be a good time to repost. I have very limited amount of small, xx-large and xxx-large shirts so if you want one of those act quickly. Talk of an EDA shirt began last summer and some how I ended up in charge. When JewelStock was announced we decided to make a shirt to commemorate that instead. Over the Winter people started bugging me to make an EDA Shirt again. So, I did, and here is the information. The shirt was designed by me and approved by Jewel and Lenedra for sale to the EDA's. The image of Jewel of the shirt comes from a picture taken by EDA Krista Dooley at Jewel's Border's Cafe appearance in Boston in May of 1996. The font used on the shirt was done by the infamous Dennis Harris. The shirt itself is royal blue and the design is in black and yellow. The design is a picture of Jewel on the front along with the words "Everyday Angels." The back reads "EDA" in large letters and below that "eda-info@smoe.org" an address which auto-responds a brief FAQ about the mailing list. Below that is the angel from the JewelStock shirt redone in black and yellow. The shirt costs $15 plus $3 shipping per order (foreign order shipping is priced on an order by order basis). Since being introduced four months ago, over 250 shirts have been purchased by EDA from around the world. The shirt can be ordered via the web at http://www.cybercom.net/~pjk/EDA. If you do not have any web access, would like a jpeg of the design, or have any other question feel free to email me at this address. Thanks, Phil (The T-Shirt Guy) From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Thu Nov 20 16:04:35 1997 Return-Path: Received: by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4-jewelq-jane) id PAA13805; Thu, 20 Nov 1997 15:54:26 -0500 Date: Thu, 20 Nov 1997 15:54:26 -0500 Message-Id: <199711202054.PAA13805@jane.smoe.org> Received: from mrin42.mail.aol.com (mrin42.mx.aol.com [198.81.19.152]) by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4-daemon-mode-relay2) with SMTP id PAA13457; Thu, 20 Nov 1997 15:36:20 -0500 From: ABershaw@aol.com Received: (from root@localhost) by mrin42.mail.aol.com (8.8.5/8.7.3/AOL-2.0.0) id PAA02700; Thu, 20 Nov 1997 15:34:00 -0500 (EST) To: jewel@smoe.org, jewel-news@smoe.org, cmgroves@easynet.co.uk, xenomorph@sprynet.com Subject: Jewel News: MrBB-12/10 Jewel in London for Hogmanay Show Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk content-length: 649 Hi all, I still haven't heard any confirmation on the UNICEF Benefit at The Beacon Theater in NYC on December 10th. I've had many inquiries about the "Aria" that Jewel has been singing over in Europe. Jewel learned the Aria while at Interlochen. She can't remember the name of the Opera that it came from but someone in Italy told her it came from the Death Opera. She knows the name of it but not how to spell it so she spelled it phonetically for me: Lascia Te Me Morirray So now we need an Italian Opera Fan EDA to step forth with the correct spelling & any other info. Here's everything I'm currently aware of. As you know, Steve Poltz's solo album "One Left Shoe" will be released next March 10th on Mercury Records. Jewel was involved in these sessions. They took place during those few days off after The Lilith Fair right before the recent Papillon Tour began. Among others, they recorded duets of many EDA favorites including "Impalla", "I Thought I Saw You Last Night" & "Silver Lining". Although track selection is still yet to be determined, I thought you may be interested to know that the title track "One Left Shoe" is yet another Kilcher/Poltz collaboration. It was written back in July during that break in the middle of Lilith Fair. For all you lyric collectors, here's the transcription: "One Left Shoe" by Steve Poltz & Jewel Kilcher July 1997 Under the spotlight, The neon kiss Carnival barkers preen & twist Three for a quarter, 2 for a dime Broken Hearts General Store--Open all the time Chorus: I'm lonely without you Just like one left shoe I'm lonely without you Tennis shoes strung across a telephone wire The sun sneaks up on my empire Tent for your castle with a bubblegum crown Me & my minions make the rounds I'm lonely without you Just like one left shoe I'm lonely without you Bridge: I'm a little cocoon just blooming for you I draw a deep breath, The day is new I'm brave, I'm a hero, The world's bright & clear But my insides shrivel when you're not here Newspaper pile on my front porch The sun is winding up, It's starting to scorch The air is dust & lungs are hot I keep making love to what is not I'm lonely without you Just like one left shoe I'm lonely without you This album is destined to become extremely popular with the EDAs, I'm sure. Lets hope Steve also gets some long overdue global recognition! This post is likely the last from us until early December. We leave for the West Coast in a few days & will be avoiding all computers for a while & enjoying EDAs in person! Thats what this list is really all about, ya know..... We anxiously await seeing lotsa old friends & making many new ones. Here's to wishing everyone a wonderful Thanksgiving! This takes place on March 7, at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium here in San Francisco. Tickets are $100 for main floor, $60 for preferred seats, and $30 for balcony seats. This show is to benefit the T.J. Martell Foundation, which helps find cures for cancers and AIDS. Usually, the nominees are mostly local, but this year is different. Lot's of other big name nominees too, including No Doubt, Sheryl Crow, Wallflowers, Beck, Coolio, Metallica, Rage Against the Machine, and many others. These ppl are just nominated and might not be attending. Performers have yet to be announced. Can anyone confirm if Jewel will be attending (MrBB) ? Thanks for listening, and take care. She has been acknowledged for her insightful lyrics and four octave voice - as well as for her fetching good looks. All-in-all, it's been quite a ride for this very special young woman who hails from the decidedly out-of-the-way wilds of Homer, Alaska. In fact it was her rough-and-tumble Alaskan upbringing (in a home where there was no shower, no television and that was heated only through a near-constantly burning fire) that filled young Jewel with many of the life perspectives that were later to fill her songs with their striking lyrical images. It was a life with few luxuries, where making the morning walk to the outhouse - through two feet of snow - was a necessary fact-of-life. But rather than becoming angry, frustrated or bitter because of her childhood experiences, Jewel grew to love both the rugged Alaskan landscape and her spartan lifestyle. Her parents, who were both songwriters and singers, provided a rich environment for knowledge - as well as a love for the arts. From her earliest days, Jewel's mother used to take time each day to teach her and her two siblings all she knew about art, poetry and music - all of which remain vital parts of Jewels' day-to-day psyche. It was from her original love of poetry that Jewel's music began to take root. "Through those lessons from my mother I was given a tool," she said. "After my parents got divorced, I started writing poetry a lot because I didn't always know how to express myself. That to me is the real beauty of writing. It makes you more intimate with yourself." But how does one make it from the wilds of Homer to winning Grammy Awards? For Jewel that long and tangled journey started when she won a vocal scholarship to attend Michigan's Fine Arts Academy. Moving away from Alaska in her early teens was a traumatic time for Jewel because it exposed her to the "real word" for the first time in her young life. But the experience also provided her with the outlet she had been craving from the first moment she discovered her love of music. Once she reached Michigan, Jewel nmever looked back. "My two years there were a turning point," she said. "I saw a bigger world. I immersed myself in everything - drama, dance, sculpture, music. I imagine I was 16 or 17, during my senior year at Interlochen that I first started studying guitar and getting serious about my songwriting." After graduation, however, instead of jumping into the fray of trying to land a record contract - or at least test her music in a more competitive environment, Jewel decided to take the path of least resistance. Rather than moving to an industry hub like Los Angeles or New York, she drove her van out to San Diego and camped out for a period of six months. With no income and no responsibilities, Jewel lived a simple life that reminded her of her Alaskan upbringing. But instead of waking up to freezing temperatures day-after-day, in sunny So Cal, she could swim, relax, write poems and work on her music to her heart's content. She began hanging out in "hip" local coffee shops where she would sing her songs for other aspiring young musicians - until the day the coffee store owner recognized Jewel's talent and offered her a job singing once a week in his "club". "Until I started finding my direction, my time in San Diego was a difficult time for me," Jewel said. "I felt a lot of social pressure to figure out what I was going to do with the rest of my life. I had no desire to go to college. But I also felt no peace in traveling or just bumming around. I got a number of dead-end jobs...got fired a couple of times. I was frightened and a little depressed. The idea of spending my life in a 9-5 job made me feel trapped and hopeless." The coffee shop gig proved to be a blessing for Jewel for not only did it provide for some much-needed pocket change, it also finally gave her a clear career direction. Her little shows became hot-ticket items in San Diego, with the intimate coffee shop environs being packed beyond capacity on the nights when Jewel was scheduled to perform. Even the local media began to pick up on the fast-growing Jewel phenomenon, labelling her voice as "crystalline" and "beautiful." It wasn't long before such praise reached the ears of record industry powers a few miles up the coast in L.A. Within two months label executives began pounding on her van door, hoping to get her to sign a major label deal. "I was so surprised when I started to hear from record labels," she said. "My first reaction was one of relief - that I might be able to do something I really enjoyed and get paid for it. My next reaction was one of shock - that people would actually hear my music." Hear her music, indeed! In the more than two years that have now passed since Jewel's debut disc, Pieces Of You, first became available, that effort has become one of the most successful - and important - albums of the late '90s. Following a relatively slow start, the disc began building comercial momentum that saw it pass the quintuple platinum sales level in late '97 - and it's a phenomenon that shows no sign of slowing down at any point in the near future. For many Jewel's chart-topping success has signalled the welcomed return of the singer/songwriter - performes with insight and passion whose effort stand in sharp contrast to the more blatant energies of other rock genres. Her songs such as "Who Will Save Your Soul" have won countless industry awards and turned Jewel into an international phenonemen. But for this still naive young miss from Alaska, each day continues to bring new and amazing experiences to her doorstep. "I wake up each day and wonder what wonderful thing is ging to happen next," she said. "It's all been like a wonderful dream. But if it is a dream, I hope I never wake up." (end) Hope you enjoyed it =) Chatdict2@aol.com "Well excuse me, guess I mistakened you for somebody else, somebody who gave a damn, somebody more like myself" FG Included in the magazine is a pull-out poster of Jewel folded into 4s because it is so big. It just goes to show this was Jewel's year. The 23-year-old singer/songwriter had been fairly ubiquitrous since her spring 1995 debut album, Pieces of You, hit the top of the charts in August 1996. But this summer, she was everywhere: on the radio (with her paean breakup, "You Were Meant for Me:); on the television (MTV, VH1, etc.); headlining one of the summer's hottest tours (Lilith); and on the news-stands (in addition to Time, she graced the covers of Spin and Rolling Stone). Her omnipresence prompted one backstage reporter at September's MTV Video Music Awards to ask, "Is this all becoming old hat?" In her sweet and whispery voice, Jewel let out a little laugh and a sigh. "No. It just always feels like I'm going to the zoo." What a long, strange stroll past the monkeys it's been. Her trip from Homer, Alaska, to stardom is a well-documented one: performing with her father from the age of 6; living in Alaska, Hawaii and California; waitressing and surviving off of customers' leftovers; and singing in coffeehouses. When Atlantic Records signed her in 1994, Jewel Kilcher was living out of a van in Southern California. No wonder she feels she's been given a second chance at life. "I get to make a living doing something that I love," she says. "At the same time, I think that when I live my passion, people remember their own, so I feel very blessed." Ron Shapiro, senior vice president and general manager of Atlantic, told Rolling Stone, "She has one of the most God-given voices I have ever heard. Even if you don't get the record, even if you don't think it's critically perfect, you can't deny what she does onstage." Plenty of people are getting the record, however. It's already sold 7 million copies. And if the lyrics occasionally sound as if they were written by an angst-filled teen, well, Jewel was as young as 17 when she penned them. Her second album will, for all intents and purposes, be her debut as an adult. When asked what her message is, Jewel responds: "I think that it is becoming increasingly important that we figure out what our dreams are. I think what really separates us from the animals in that we're capable of doing more than just surviving. And it's time that we start demanding that for ourselves." ----Darcy Lockman
