Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk content-length: 1663 Thanx to my cable-provider, I'm able to watch a Taiwanese entertainment news program (a la Entertainment Tonight) everday after midnight (you can tell that I'm a faithful follower of that show, since I have school the next day). Anyway, the show is called E-News, and last nite they reported on Jewel's Taiwan visit on Oct. 1! I know, I know, due to reasons beyond my comprehension, the show usually broadcast the episode aired couple of days ago. The news may be old but I was very glad to see Jewel chatting with reporters, in a press conference attended by reporters from six countries! Jewel talked (in English, not Chinese) to the Taiwanese interviewer about her life prior to InnerChange, when she bounced from one thankless job to another, and was fired from all of them before she decided to move into her van. The reporter noted that Jewel is only twenty-three, but has already appeared on various magazine covers such as Rolling Stone and TIME (the interviewer held up that special issue of TIME to everyone, much to the delight of Jewel), and her debut album has sold six million copies in U.S...no small feat to accomplish. The Jewel-segment ends with Jewel, armed with her guitar (no, it's not Big Blue) and sang WWSYS and Satellite acoustically. Jewel looked radiant, dressed in tight-fitting black shirt with a matching pants. Her face had a good layer of cosmetics, but she seemed relaxed and cheerful (no dark circles under her eyes from jet lags were sighted). Hopefully, E-News will report her second day in Taiwan before she headed to the Land of Rising Sun. That's it for my report. Some people are already writing to me expressing opinions on the council's decision & I'd like to make a suggestion to everyone. Please use this time off from list chit-chat to reflect on all thats happenned here over the past few years. If you're new to the list, rather than feel shortchanged, use this next month to educate yourself about the history of the list & all thats been accomplished by those that came before you. Theres an easy way to do this that might even be fun in the process. All the digests from the past 2 years are archived online at: http://www.smoe.org/lists/jewel/archives/ It will serve you well to take the initiative to educate yourself about all the things Mike mentioned in his announcement. Another good place to begin (if you are new) is the site built to help new folks learn all the basics. This is at: http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup/ This list has accomplished some amazing things & I'm sure it will continue to be an example of all that is great about the Internet in the future. But once in a while, we're gonna all have to cooperate with the inevitable changes that list management impliments. I know Mike & Jeff. All of their efforts are in every EDAs best interests. None of the things they do are for "power trip" or "punishment" reasons. They spend an incredible amount of time & energy toward keeping this forum functioning. Without it, we're all just a bunch of seperated Jewel fans..... I'm sure anyone who's experienced an EDA event, be it Jewelstock, The Living Room Tour gigs, or simply meeting other EDAs, can tell you that theres something incredibly special going on here. I personally think a lot of the lists problems stem from the fact that many already know how special it is & feel very protective of that spirit. I know the major goal of all us "so called vets" is to "turn on" all the others to what we all love so much. It ain't easy to do without all the new folks taking the time to educate themselves before diving in. On the other hand, its time for more of us vets to take the time to "adopt" these new people so eager to learn! I'm as busy as anyone on this list & I've just taken the plunge myself & adopted all the CT EDAs. This month off is a PERFECT opportunity for every "vet" to go to Rachel's "Adopt A Newbie" site & make a few new friends while doing your part to "turn on" these people to whats hapnin here. The AAN site is at: http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3079/newbies.html When we all return to normal list activity in a month or so, this place can be a far better place for everyone, new, vet, young or old. I can't think of a better goal for everyone to work toward. During this month, I'll still be posting any news from Jewel & Lenedra, although I doubt there'll be much. Our best source of info right now is our international EDA friends that will be catching the shows all over Europe. I hope they all keep us up to date! Think about some of these things & lets all attempt to do whatever we can to help each other here. Thats what this place has always REALLY been about. He alluded to a post of mine that was made to the subscribers of the loose mail and digest lists. So, in case you were wondering what the "H-E-double hockey sticks" he was talking about, a copy of my post follows below. (One thing that may need futher clarifying, there was a classic JC/NJC (Jewel Content/Non-Jewel Content) "fight" over the weekend and a another problem that resulted in the list being put on full moderation for about 40 hours). Of course, if ya don't give a hoot, just hit the ol' delete button :) Mike C. *********************** Subject: Jewel list to go into TEMPORARY news ONLY mode - ALL PLEASE READ!!! Hi everyone, I ask each and every one of the members of this list to please read this entire email so that you will fully understand why this *temporary* change in the lists' format is happening. Some of you may consider it long, and I was asked to keep this short, but I'm a stubborn ol' mule, and I believe in handing out all the necessary information. Thursday morning the Jewel mailing list and its' digest will be undergoing a radical, but TEMPORARY (one month maximum) change into a Jewel-news/EDA-event-news only mode. After this period, it will be returned to "normal". This was not a decision of one, but rather of a council of 18 list members, chosen by me, who discussed this at length recently. It is important that you know why this temporary change is happening, and exactly what it means, as it means that during this period you are asked to post only news-type postings (to be detailed below). Other postings will not get through. (The list will be in full moderation again for this period ONLY) OK, for those of you who are already tempted, before you hit that "reply" button, again, please read all of this, as some VERY GOOD reasons for this are stated below :) Brief note for the really, really new: EDA stands for EveryDay Angel, it's just what we say instead of list members...we say EDAs! (Jewel herself nicknamed this list her "EveryDay Angels" :) I also want to stress that this change really has nothing to do with the disagreements etc that transpired this last weekend. As a matter of fact the problems of the past weekend and subsequent action to stop it actually delayed this upcoming change, (extra work in moderating an open list) as this change was planned well before that all happened. The "EDA Council" I mentioned was formed 10 days ago in anticipation of some problems we were seeing and expecting on the list this month. More on that later. By the way, some of you may not know me. For the benefit of those that do not, let me introduce myself. :) My name is Mike Connell, and presently I manage/maintain the Jewel mailing list and its' digest version for Jeff Wasilko, the person who owns the list (it runs on his system) I've been on this list since March of 1996 and have seen and been involved in many of the AMAZING things that have happened here. Some of you newer members may have read of some of these things (particulary JewelStock) in some of the recent magazines, which may have been your reason for joining us. :) To the new members, I welcome you all! :) However, some of you newer folks may have been surprised at what you found when you joined. (especially the VERY new, who may have joined during this recent "fight") The list has been "suffering" from growing pains for a while now, and we haven't had the chance to heal ourselves yet. We are going to try to heal now. You may have read in some of those those magazine articles of the amazing closeness of this list (it's here, trust me!). That closeness was due in part to the following: 1) JewelStock - a private concert(s) Jewel gave for this very list in July 1996 2) At least 15 other list member gatherings (EDA gatherings) of up to 50 people. Many, no, most of which Jewel wasn't even in the same state. Many of us have met HUNDREDs of fellow list members through these events :) 3) Tape trees - organized distribution of AUTHORIZED tapings of concerts etc of Jewel 4) Production of EDA t-shirts, EDA guitar picks (sold out, 2nd batch DELAYED for reasons I cannot get into now) and the present & forthcoming JEWELry project(s) 5) The James P Kalanick Fund drive - last May the members of this list raised nearly $5,000 towards a fund to raise $20,000 to help buy James P Kalanick a specially equipped van. About a year ago now, he was tragically injured in a hit & run accident, and en lieu of sending her presents for her birthday, Jewel suggested we help James. :) (he's also a San Diego resident) 6) The giving to Jewel of an actual star (a real STAR!) for her birthday. There's a star in the little dipper that is now officially called "Jewel Kilcher (Jewel of the North)". More on this gift can be seen at: http://home.sprynet.com/sprynet/xenomorph/birthday.htm 7) The Living Room Tours (LRTs) in July/August 1997. Briefly, two talented singer/songwriter friends of Jewel (Elizabeth Hummel & Cindy Lee Berryhill) toured across the USA (and one stop in Canada) performing about a dozen live shows in the living rooms and backyards of members of this list. Attendance at these shows ranged from a dozen to well over a hundred!! and many more things that have happened to this list :) Also the upcoming EveryDay Angels Foundation (EDAF)! It was officially annouunced two weeks ago and is in the final stages of becoming formal. More information on this foundation will be announced during the month :) Because of all of the above, and the many more EDA events that have happened, this list has grown quite close. I know I can speak for many list members here that many of us can say we have met some of our dearest friends because of this list. We owe a lot of that to NJC (Non Jewel Content postings). NJC (in moderation) is truly the lifeblood of this list and is what has built it's character and has helped it grow. It teaches us about each other. However, as we grow in numbers, (this list has nearly qradrupled in the last year), we have growing pains. With these growing pains happening at a steady rate, it has become harder to adjust, and we weren't adjusting fast enough. It has (in the eyes of many, including the 18 EDA council members I mentioned previously) become nearly impossible to adjust now, we feel we have to partially rebuild. Therefore, after much discussion on this council, it was decided to put the list into a temporary slowdown mode. (As I said above, I'll discuss some of the "whys" later.) To do this, it has been decided to make this list, for one month at the most (perhaps only two or three weeks) a Jewel-news and/or EDA-event-news ONLY list. What this means is, that effective at 6:00am Thursday morning Eastern USA time, the list will again become TEMPORARILY fully moderated and the only posts that will be approved and posted to the list (and of course digest) will be Jewel NEWS in nature, or list member event (EDA) NEWS in nature. Now.....WHY? Three main reasons. 1) To give everyone a little vacation from the 60 to 80 daily emails this list brings. I know I certainly could use a breather once in a while from the list, even before I was managing it. I'm sure many of you out there could too. :) Besides, Jewel is out of the country right now until mid-November, so the timimg is right anyway. There's not much "Jewel" to talk about that hasn't already been talked about anyway. 2) Believe it or not, a few of us actually predicted that there would be some list arguments/fights/disagreements this month (the exact week actually!) for one very simple reason. Jewel is touring out of the USA & Canada. In the past, ALL three previous times Jewel left North America to tour abroad, we had "problems" on the list. There are a few explanations for this, but they all boil down to one main thing. Not much "Jewel" to talk about. The Non-Jewel talk goes up (again, to a degree, NJC is good!!!!), the Jewel-talk goes down, and usually, through no ones' fault(!), someone disagrees with or misunderstands the intent of a post to the list, posts about it, and before you know it, BANG, we have a little fight, which at times erupts into a bigger one, an insult here, and insult there, along with the peacekeepers posting for it to stop. We just had one last weekend. It wasn't fun at all. 3) To give the EDA Council the time to further discuss and implement plans and actions already devised into a reality, without having to read the daily 80 emails. The goal of these plans is to better inform newly arriving list members, and some present list members of the the basics on Jewel in general that will help them "fit in" and feel comfortable with this list sooner and likewise about this lists' terminology, ways, guidelines, policies etc. ********************* What is Jewel NEWS? Well, basically, it's news-type posts announcing findings, appearances or reviews about Jewel. If you found a new magazine article, see that there will be a repeat of her appearance on _______ show, went to one of the shows of hers' in Japan or Europe and want to post a review/setlist, by all means do. :) The following is based on the Jewel-news list info file. If you have Jewel news that falls into these categories, feel free to submit it: TOUR SCHEDULE - tour schedules TICKET INFO - dates when tickets go on sale COMPACT DISC RELEASE - release dates & news of albums, singles, soundtracks & promos TV/RADIO APPEARANCE - tv and radio appearances ELECTRONIC MEDIA APPEARANCE - chat sessions, electronic Q&A sessions, etc. WEBCAST - a webcast of a Jewel concert PRINT MEDIA APPEARANCE - newspaper, magazine, and other print articles SET LIST - Europe & Japan concert reviews & set lists *********************************** What is EDA/List member event news? Basically, if you plan on having an EDA gathering/"get together", or want to post a review of one you just went to, please do. It is expected that this change will result in three to five daily emails from jewel@smoe.org plus whatever the EDA Council plans to post in regards to what I mentioned above about better informing new or relatively new list members. There may be more, there may be less. This also means that DIGEST READERS can expect only one digest a day, and that will be the usual one at 1:05am EST. In the event of some larger news postings, there may be two digests a day. Also, please note that since all posts during this one month news-only period will be held up before it's sent on to the list, it may be 8 to 10 hours before you actually see your post on the list (I can only send it on to the list when I'm home) Remember, the list will be returmed to normal in early November. I expect this change will be popular with some (the ones that want that one month vacation from the 80 daily emails!) and unpopular with others (the ones that LOVE 80 emails a day!) Again, this change will go into effect on Thursday at 6:00am Eastern Time USA Just remember it's for only one month :) Your humble servants, Mike & the EDA Council :) * The Jewel Mailing List Netiquette & New Member Guide is at: * http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup * * If you are new to the list and need someone to guide you * please check out the "Adopt A Newbie" page at: * http://www.geocities.com/wellesley/3079/newbies.html * * If you have list related questions, feel free to email me * at Ducksoup@spectra.net * * DuckofPrey@aol.com WhyADuck55 on AOL Instant Messenger From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Fri Oct 10 19:32:14 1997 Return-Path: Received: by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4-jewelq-jane) id TAA15903; Fri, 10 Oct 1997 19:16:04 -0400 Received: from emout07.mail.aol.com (emout07.mx.aol.com [198.81.11.22]) by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4-daemon-mode-relay2) with SMTP id SAA15767 for ; Fri, 10 Oct 1997 18:56:17 -0400 From: MikeDreams@aol.com Received: (from root@localhost) by emout07.mail.aol.com (8.7.6/8.7.3/AOL-2.0.0) id SAA00460 for Jewel-news@smoe.org; Fri, 10 Oct 1997 18:54:51 -0400 (EDT) Date: Fri, 10 Oct 1997 18:54:51 -0400 (EDT) Message-ID: <971010185151_1032605248@emout07.mail.aol.com> To: Jewel-news@smoe.org Subject: Jewel News: TV APPEARANCE: VH1 Fashion Awards Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk content-length: 257 Hi EDAs, Jewel is nominated for the VH1 Fashion Awards, Tuesday, Oct. 28th. One of these involved the selling of Jewel's leftover tour books. At the time, AmyJo & I threw in an extra $120 so that we could completely sell out the ones available for this project. Anyway, I'm still sitting on those last 12 booklets. If any EDAs would enjoy one of these last booklets, I'm now making them available at cost (while its easy for no-one to miss this post). Read the info below & if you'd like to reserve one, email me with the words "RESERVE TOUR BOOK" in the subject. I'll email you back to confirm that one is being held for you. There are only a dozen left so they'll probably go fast. I'll also post to the list when all are spoken for. I'm going to limit ordering on these to USA mailing adresses only. (If you live outside the USA & desperately want one, please make arrangements so that I can send it to another US EDA who then can forward it to you.) Heres instructions if you want to place an order: 70% of total EDA List sales of these booklets has already been donated to the JPK Fund on behalf of Jewel & The EDA Foundation. :-) For more JPK Fund info go to: http://www.endor.org/jpk/ Hi to any USA EDAs that would like to aquire one of Jewel's "Tiny Lights Tour '97" booklets that were sold during Jewel's 1st 1997 tour. These booklets contain poetry, writing, vintage & recent photos as well as info about the tour itself. They are 14 pages in length including front & back cover. They were designed by Jewel's close friend BiBi Bielat. NOTE: These are NOT the same booklets that were sold on the recent Papillon and Lilith Fair tours & contain completely different photos & writings. Here's the instructions. Please follow them EXACTLY in order for this to be as easy as possible for us. Cost of the booklets are $10. All booklets will be sent 1st class unless you want & pay for Priority mail. All you need do is send me a standard size manilla envelope (9.5" x 13") that is self adressed & with at least $1.50 in stamps already on it. (Note: DO NOT use postal meter postage! Only stamps. Add an extra 32 cent stamp for each extra booklet ordered up to 5 booklets.) Include $10 cash (NO CHECKS) or postal money order for each booklet ordered. I will simply put however many booklets you paid for in the envelope & send it back to you. Its that easy. If you want the booklets faster, you can send a Priority mailer with a $3 stamp on it instead of a manilla envelope with $1.50 on it. Send your self adressed pre-postaged 9.5" x 13" manilla envelope, with $10 cash (or a $10 postal money order made out to Alan Bershaw) for each booklet ordered to: Jewel Tour Book c/o MrBB P.O. Anyway, enough of my drooling, here is a review of tonights show. Jewel played the Irish Centre in Birmingham,England, which was the first show on her European Tour.I was fortunate enough to see her on her previous visit to England in May,when she played The Mean Fiddler in London in front of about 120 people, most of which were American students,so it wasn't really an initiation to England in the true sense.Tonight was different. I really did wonder whether many people would turn up,as I've heard very little airplay here.I was, however, pleasantly surprised at the turnout, which I would number at around 350-400 in the end.The middle of the hall had about 150 seats laid out, with the rest standing around the perimeter.I was fortunate to have a front row seat. She played the whole show solo and it lasted 74 minutes and this was all taped on sony minidisc (see later). The track listings were as follows: Don't Cold Song Satellite Sometimes It Be That Way Who WIll Save Your Soul 1000 Miles Away (for Dennis Harris !!!) Morning SOng Pieces Of You Last Dance Rodeo Near You ALways Race Car Driver Enter From The East Deep Water You Were Meant For Me Angel Standing By Chime Bells ENCORE Foolish Games Nikos She left the stage with a "bye" and a simple wave. Before the show,I met up with Chris Groves (one of the few other English EDA's) and he was able to tape it all in perfect quality.Due to forthcoming exam commitments,I am unable to attend the shows in Manchester (16th),Glasgow (17th) or LOndon (19th),but Chris will be going to them all.I will, however, have tapes of all of these shows shortly,so if anybody wishes to arrange any trades, then please contact either myself or Chris, and we'll be pleased to help out. My meeting with Jewel was purely by chance.I thought that she'd left by the back door immediately after the show. After about 30 minutes of wating for my lift home to turn up,I went back into the Irish Centre to empty my bladder of too much beer (again !!) only to literally bump into Jewel as she walked out !!! Not wishing to miss the opportunity,I had a quick chat with her before she jumped into a taxi and got her to sign my ticket stubb !!! A great ending to a thorougly enjoyable evening. -- Richard From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Fri Oct 17 17:33:55 1997 Return-Path: Received: by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4-jewelq-jane) id RAA05268; Fri, 17 Oct 1997 17:23:41 -0400 Message-Id: <199710172123.RAA05268@jane.smoe.org> Date: Fri, 17 Oct 1997 15:12:44 -0400 (EDT) From: Paul2k@aol.com To: jewel-news@smoe.org Subject: Jewel News: jewel set to star in movie Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk content-length: 1318 this was shamelessly lifted from Yahoo's entertainment news section for today, Friday the 17th... Paul Kim Jewel Polishes Movie Plans By Chris Petrikin and Adam Dawtrey HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - Pop singer Jewel is in advanced talks to make her feature film debut as the female lead in a Civil War drama called "To Live On." Tobey Maguire is attached to co-star in the $35 million Fox project, and sources say the studio is talking to Matt Damon (Courage Under Fire) for the other lead. Ang Lee (The Ice Storm) will direct. Jewel will play the love interest of two young men whose lives change during the denouement and aftermath of a year of fierce guerrilla warfare on the Kansas-Missouri border. Described as "Platoon" in America, it's based on the novel Woe to Live On by David Woodrell. The picture is slated to start shooting in March. Jewel, whose last name is Kilcher, is currently on tour in Europe. She has made a meteoric rise from Alaskan unknown to recording star. Her 1995 debut album "Pieces of You" has sold more than 5 million copies and has vaulted her to the forefront of the latest wave of successful female singer-songwriters. Now, following in the steps of Madonna, Whitney Houston and Courtney Love, Jewel looks to become the latest musical diva to make the jump to the big screen. Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk content-length: 3502 Right, I think this might be a bit of a long message, but it's all Jewel related! Last night was Jewel's second concert of her UK tour, and it took place at the Manchester University Debating Hall (holds about 400 people). It wasn't packed, but there were quite a few in there. The opening act was a guy called Simon Warner. He's interesting, but I won't be rushing out to get his stuff... anyway, the important bit.. The set list: Don't Pieces Of You (with Supermodel story) Satellite Sometimes It Be That Way Everything Breaks Sometime Who Will Save Your Soul Emily Cold Song Foolish Games Last Dance Rodeo Morning Song Race Car Driver You Were Meant For Me Fragile Flame Chime Bells Angel Standing By -- Amen All in all, it wasn't a bad concert. There was very little audience interaction, and I doubt that many people actually knew the songs. No-one tried to join in at all, and judging by the amount of laughter when Cold Song was played, I'd assume that quite a few people had never heard it before. She wasn't particularly communicative (in terms of story telling - she only told the POY story), and the set and stage were both really quite sparse (no more than 15 lights in total). Foolish Games was probably the stand-out song in terms of people singing along, and technically, I'd say that SIBTW was the best song she played. #And your thoughtless words are breaking my heart# However, the sound quality was very good, and in terms of singing, she was on top form. I've got quite a few photos, and if they come out well, then I'll let list members have them for their web-pages. I'll let those who e-mailed me previously know. Jewel seemed relatively unwilling to come out after the show (apparently in Birmingham she had returned to the stage to sign some autographs some twenty minutes after the concert ended). She also left flowers that people had brought for her on the stage. After about 30 minutes, she did come out of the dressing room, and, surrounded by security, signed a couple of autographs (including my POY cover :) ) and then left the building. My thoughts were that perhaps it would have been better for her if she'd come back to the main hall, signed a couple of things from the stage, and then she'd have been able to leave without any hassle... There was no merchandise at all, although some people *were* selling bootleg posters outside. The Independant newspaper (UK) today printed a full page article on Jewel in the "Eye" section. I only saw it in the library, and didn't even get chance to read it - perhaps it might be on their web-site if they have one? Pieces Of You appears to have been re-issued in the UK, with the addition of the single edit of "Foolish Games" putting the track total up to 15. This probably has something to do with the imminent release of the song in the UK as a single (early November?) and the current release on the continent. After working with a coach & the director for three days, she took the screen test. This occurred during the days off between Lillith Fair and her recent Papillon tour. Jewel did extremely well. This screen test was done with Leonardo DiCapria(sp?), who was originally cast as the lead. Leonardo pulled out because he needed time off & this caused the project to nearly get scrapped. (Without Leo's name, the financing pulled out.) A deal was struck with Fox shortly after that. The budget was cut considerably but it will still be a good project. As stated in that press release, Jewel will play the love interest of two young men whose lives change during the denouncement and aftermath of a year of fierce guerrilla warfare on the Kansas-Missouri border. Tobey Maguire is attached to co-star in the $35 million Fox project, and the studio is supposedly talking to Matt Damon (Courage Under Fire) for the other lead. Ang Lee (The Ice Storm) will direct. Right now, filming is scheduled to begin in March, but it may begin earlier. Jewel is cast as the female lead, but its a smaller role than the two male leads. I have no idea how this will effect her studio plans & release of a second album. It will obviously effect touring plans for early to mid 1998, but a lot remains to be figured out at this point. Jewel is very excited about this project & we should all wish her the best. :-) Thats everything I know about it presently. Best wishes! Maybe that's one of the reasons why Jewel Kilcher's growing coterie of British fans like her so much. Here is a new star, born in the Alaskan tundra, who plays dates with Neil young and Bob Dylan, makes records with various Red Hot Chili Peppers (and then ditches them) and is about to screen test for a movie co-starring Leonardo DiCaprio. Yet she'll happily get on stage armed with a couple of guitars and a raft of stories that are neither too self-deprecating to be cloying, nor so right-on that you are left thinking she's just another folk-hippy troubadour. Jewel is such a striking individual that her natural Swiss-beauty ought to be the first thing you notice about her. But Kilcher's God-given charms fade into the background once her knee-knocking stance and a vocal repertoire to match her sundry facial disguises, slide into place. It is tempting to locate her style in a tradition encompassing familiar names, such as Joni Mitchell or Tori Amos, but loosen up those straitjackets and she resembles another master of musical disguise and tragi-comic intent - Loudon Wainwright. The bittersweet route Jewel follows has been taken so often that even those who only travel the American road by proxy start to recognise the signposts; luckily she makes enough detours during the sexually explicit Race Car Driver or the almost end-of-the-affair You Were Meant For Me to keep the journey vivid. Given that her voice, face and physical presence all pass the check factor, Jewel's main asset lies in surpassing the norm. -- Jewel, Pieces Of UK - http://easyweb.easynet.co.uk/~cmgroves/Jewel From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Mon Oct 20 20:53:16 1997 Return-Path: Received: by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4-jewelq-jane) id UAA04554; Mon, 20 Oct 1997 20:37:57 -0400 Date: Mon, 20 Oct 1997 20:37:57 -0400 Message-Id: <199710210037.UAA04554@jane.smoe.org> Received: from nohar.rcinet.com (nohar.rcinet.com [157.134.207.6]) by dmapub.dma.org (8.8.5/8.8.5) with ESMTP id SAA10705 for ; Mon, 20 Oct 1997 18:33:03 -0400 Received: (from smap@localhost) by nohar.rcinet.com (8.8.5/8.8.5) id SAA09907 for ; Mon, 20 Oct 1997 18:33:00 -0400 (EDT) Received: from relay1.shore.net(192.233.85.129) by nohar.rcinet.com via smap (V2.0beta) id xma009897; Mon, 20 Oct 97 18:32:45 -0400 Received: from jane.smoe.org (majordom@smoe.org [204.167.97.154]) by relay1.shore.net (8.8.7/8.8.7) with SMTP id SAA11098; Mon, 20 Oct 1997 18:32:04 -0400 (EDT) Received: from localhost by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4-jewelq-jane) id SAA02272; Mon, 20 Oct 1997 18:17:52 -0400 Received: by jane.smoe.org (bulk_mailer v1.5); Mon, 20 Oct 1997 18:17:43 -0400 Received: by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4-jewelq-jane) id RAA01452; Mon, 20 Oct 1997 17:57:14 -0400 Received: from relay1.shore.net (relay1.shore.net [192.233.85.129]) by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4-daemon-mode-relay2) with ESMTP id RAA00421 for ; Mon, 20 Oct 1997 17:26:48 -0400 Received: from dns.eng.auburn.edu (0@dns.eng.auburn.edu [131.204.10.13]) by relay1.shore.net (8.8.7/8.8.7) with ESMTP id PAA28046 for ; Mon, 20 Oct 1997 15:58:50 -0400 (EDT) Received: from roadrunner.eng.auburn.edu (22502@roadrunner.eng.auburn.edu [131.204.12.50]) by dns.eng.auburn.edu (8.8.5/8.6.4) with ESMTP id OAA22079 for ; Mon, 20 Oct 1997 14:58:10 -0500 (CDT) Received: from localhost (govinan@localhost) by roadrunner.eng.auburn.edu (SMI-8.6/8.6.4) with SMTP id OAA25954 for ; Mon, 20 Oct 1997 14:58:09 -0500 From: Anil Govindaraju To: jewel@smoe.org Subject: Jewel News: Jewel in November Spin Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk content-length: 970 Hi All! Below are the quotes on Jewel in the article 'Everything and the Girl' by Ann Powers (pg. 80 of the November Issue) in Spin mag on girl power. "How does a powerful girl wield the double-edged sword of sexuality?"..."out-there sexiness is far more palatable than the dewy-eyed denial of Jewel, the current embodiment of the cheerleader who's always complaining she's fat. The advice she offers her fans seeks to preserve the kind of simple-hearted maidenhood that most kids put away with their fairy tales." Just thought I'd let you all know. Myles ------------------------------- For a while on stage, Jewel exudes vulnerability. Then she tells you she wants to bash her father's teeth in. Caroline Sullivan reports Daddy Cruel ----------- With a name like Jewel, she could only be a pop singer or a stripper. Jewel Kilcher is the former, and a highly successful one, albeit only in America, where her album Pieces Of You has sold six million. The rest of the world hasn't quite "got" her yet, because Tori Amos and Tracy Chapman were there first. But Jewel combines both Amos's vulnerable kookiness and Chapman's earnest folksingerliness in one winsome, blonde package. She even offers the novelty factor of being the first major pop star ever to come from Alaska. In all likelihood, it's just a matter of time before the world is her tundra. She's already made inroads here, selling out the scholarly Bloomsbury Theatre in London on Sunday. It was her 2,000th or so gig, if claims she played 500 shows a year for four years are true. To hear her tell it during one of her witty asides to the audience, she's done high schools at eight in the morning, including one in downtown Detroit where she was booked under the misapprehension that she was a rap act. "They walked out," she added and hardly surprising, for a less rappy act is inconceivable. The only point where Jewel and rap might intersect is in the use of the word "faggot" - it crops up in the song Pieces Of You, but, typically, is used to make a point about intolerance. Its performance was one of many places where the live Jewel was much better than the recorded version. She unveiled a degree of emotion the album only hints at, her voice swerving from assured adult to tremulous teenager to psychotic adult (on Daddy she addressed her progenitor with "Sometimes I wanna bash in your teeth, Daddy," her face scarily aglow at the thought). The tunes dealt with the usual folkie issues (herself, men and a vague desire to better the planet), cloying on record, but fresh and moving when she was singing them, gently swaying, 10 feet away. The place was so still you could hear the photographers' motor-drives. Half-hidden behind a large acoustic guitar, she had more presence than you'd expect of a woman who drinks decaffeinated tea and speaks in a girly murmur. Those 2,000 shows have instilled both a Zenlike calm - she barely moves while singing - and, oddly, a vulnerability that makes you long to give her a cup of cocoa. Not only that, she closed the show by yodelling. This is a girl who deserves our time. -- ----------------------------------------------------- Myles MacRae - Imperial College London - ISE 2nd Year mgm1@doc.ic.ac.uk - m.macrae@doc.ic.ac.uk ----------------------------------------------------- From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Wed Oct 22 06:53:22 1997 Return-Path: Received: by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4-jewelq-jane) id GAA24670; Wed, 22 Oct 1997 06:51:04 -0400 Date: Wed, 22 Oct 1997 06:51:04 -0400 Received: from nohar.rcinet.com (nohar.rcinet.com [157.134.207.6]) by dmapub.dma.org (8.8.5/8.8.5) with ESMTP id XAA22894 for ; Tue, 21 Oct 1997 23:33:09 -0400 Received: (from smap@localhost) by nohar.rcinet.com (8.8.5/8.8.5) id XAA28923 for ; Tue, 21 Oct 1997 23:33:08 -0400 (EDT) Received: from smoe.org(204.167.97.154) by nohar.rcinet.com via smap (V2.0beta) id xma028918; Tue, 21 Oct 97 23:32:58 -0400 Received: from localhost by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4-jewelq-jane) id XAA21080; Tue, 21 Oct 1997 23:13:39 -0400 Received: by jane.smoe.org (bulk_mailer v1.5); Tue, 21 Oct 1997 23:13:31 -0400 Received: by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4-jewelq-jane) id WAA20955; Tue, 21 Oct 1997 22:57:12 -0400 Received: from mail1y-int.prodigy.net (mail1y-ext.prodigy.net [198.83.19.113]) by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4-daemon-mode-relay2) with ESMTP id UAA19002 for ; Tue, 21 Oct 1997 20:30:49 -0400 Received: from default (slip129-37-123-96.oh.us.ibm.net [129.37.123.96]) by mail1y-int.prodigy.net (8.8.5/8.8.5) with ESMTP id UAA16296 Message-Id: <199710220026.UAA16296@mail1y-int.prodigy.net> From: "George S Stagani" To: Subject: Jewel News: jewel in IN Style Magazine Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk content-length: 280 Hi To All!! But beneath her couture gown her little piggies were bare. Carter, who also performed barefoot for three million viewers on PBS' July 4th special on the Mall in Washington DC, is leading a wave of barefoot singers that includes Toni Braxton, Amy Grant and Jewel, who covered Patti Smith's "Dancing Barefoot" in her Lilith sets last summer." "Of course, less footwear means more work for the concert crew. A techie for Jewel confirms that the path from backstage to the mike is carefully swept before the folk-pop pixie goes on." Below is an updated schedule of everything I know presently. It includes a bit of new info & tentative New Years Eve plans for Las Vegas Hard Rock Hotel. As Mike mentioned last night, merchandise galore will be available soon, hopefully in time for the holidays. As well as being available in some stores, all of it will likely be made available directly through official mail order. So worry not, if you're cut off from access to a local store carrying those posters, calendars, etc. Details on all of this authorized merchandise & more will be posted fairly soon. Please wait for that post before asking questions. Some possible projects are currently formulating that many of you will be interested in. Atz (Jewel's dad) plans on taking some time off from teaching and begin concentrating on writing a book about The Kilcher family. This book will not focus on Jewel, but rather on family history, the homesteading life and Ruth & Yule Kilcher(Jewel's grandparents) primarily. It's a fascinating family & this should be an extremely interesting read. I'm also in the very beginning stages of discussing the remastering & possible re-release of other Kilcher Family recordings. If this happens, CDs may be made available through mail order, as well. The first project will possibly be (Jewel's Aunt/Atz's sister) Mossie Davidson's double album release from the early 70's. This album was a primary influence on Jewel. I'll keep you informed on any progress. Finally, AmyJo & I are really lookin forward to invading San Diego over Thanksgiving weekend. I'm told quite a few East Coast EDAs will also be joining in the festivities. Among others, I've heard confirmations from Dennis Harris, W1ggy Amy Nuefeld, Liz Clark, Duff, Ted Berberian & Chris Moynahan. Others are possible. Java Joe's should be rockin all weekend! For us, it was our turn to do Thanksgiving Dinner for both our families... So we're outta here! Is Jewel playing at The Hard Rock in Las Vegas on New Years Eve? Yes, this is now confirmed. I'm not sure, but its possible that this may be broadcast on VH1 and/or MTV. 2. Is Jewel scheduled to perform at the Lilith Fair 98 Preview Gig in West Palm Beach this coming December? Although previously reported that Jewel would participate in this gig, Lenedra said that the answer is no, Jewel will not be taking part in this, after all. If that changes, I'll let you know. But as of now, Jewel will not be there. 3. Are there any other gigs scheduled in the USA prior to New Years Eve? Other than one "corporate gig" in California during December, nothing is currently scheduled for the rest of 1997. This one California gig will not be open to the public & tickets will not be available. If public concert dates are added in December, I'll let you know ASAP. 4. Is Atlantic releasing "Angel Standing By" as a Christmas single? The answer to this is yes & no. They are releasing it as a single to radio stations only as a "thank you" for their support. It will also be included as part of a "Xmas Sampler" that Atlantic may be releasing to the public. Its simply the POY album version, not a live version as some have speculated. To elaborate, here's a "cut & paste job" from Lenedra's messages to me about this question: <> There you have it. Hope that answers most of the "currently crucial" questions. ;-) As I mentioned yesterday, some cool things are currently being worked on & posts about progress & a very interesting announcement will be forthcoming in the next few weeks. Stay tuned! :-) MrBB *********************************** New to the list? I sat on front row and had Jewel just a couple of meters away. Amazing. She really seemed to enjoy the silence during songs and the response she got after. There was another piano player tonight on "Foolish games" than in London where she used Simon Warners piano player. Maybe this was her own, I don't know. The highlights for me was "1000 miles away" and "Near you always". OK, I'll write a better review later. Bye for now. I have a commitment to have the Angelfood Bank up and running by Christmas 1997. Once upon a time anyone on the list could mail an address and get Rare Angels, a compilation from 95. I'd like to see such a service available again. Of course it will be on a much larger scale now with the number of list members and interest in Jewel. But I will always appreciate the nice feeling of trusting someone I didn't know to send me a treasured tape, and it's worth it to me (how about you?) to go some trouble to give this gift to others. Angels have started projects like this in the past, and eventually they become overwhelmed by the workload. Involving many people who each take on a small part of the task is my plan for success- I don't mind making a couple of tapes a week, and I know there are alot of you out there who feel the same way. Basically what I'm going to do is set up a service where anyone can ask for a live Jewel tape from a select list and get it by sending a blank and return postage. The success of the Angelfood Bank will depend on the amount of interest you have in helping out. If you would like to offer your help (anyone can help- you don't have to have a tape deck!) please email me at juddjam@mail.auburn.edu so I can get your email addy and I'll get back to you with more detailed information. I wanted to give you all a brief resume concerning yesterdays concert, and TV charity show in Stockholm, Sweden. At 1930 the concert began at Grunewaldssalen in the main concert hall in the centre of Stockholm. Grunewaldssalen is mostly used for classical performances in the size of string quartets etc, but the hall was perfect for Jewel and her guitar. About 300-350 people where present. The opening act, Simon Warner, came on stage at about 1940 and played some six songs. I'm not going to comment much on his performance, and instead I ask you to read Myles MacRae's comments about him in his report from the Bloomsbury gig. However, I feel that he didn't really get much of a chance since everyone was anxiously awaiting Jewel. ** THE CONCERT She left everyone hanging and didn't enter untill 2050, starting with "Don't". I don't have a playlist as I was too breathtaken to write anything down at that moment. This was the first time I saw her perform live, and I had not in my wildest dreams expected her to be *that* good!! The presence she had was just absolutely fantastic!! Her voice can do everything from the deepest note to the highest without any errors. She tried to sing a song in Swedish, but I really don't think anyone really heard what the lyrics was, her Swedish really isn't *that* good, to say the least.. But, she tried and it was cute, very cute indeed, and it really got the audience in a wild mood! The applause never ended! "Foolish games" was backed up by a keyboard-guy she called John, who accompanied her on piano. She said that he'd been flown in from the States the same day, and had a bit of a jet-lag. She left the stage with a modest "Thank you", but it didn't take long before she returned to do the encore. She did "Amen" and then a song in Italian (at least I think it was in Italian) which she performed a cappela. Anybody knows the details?? Then as the last song she did a song that she said her father had thought her; a really fast song with a yodel-chorus. It really made the day! To see how versatile her voice is really is incredible. Her concert went well, and she left everyone smiling and wanting more. I think it was a bit short, and I missed some songs as "Adrian" and "Painters". But i think she was in a rush since she was to get to the television studio to go live. ** THE CARITY PROGRAMME I went straight home after the concert to catch her on TV. At 2340 the hosts introduces her as Jewel, a 20-year old star from Alaska, and the camera switches to her. She did "Foolish games" and I kind of hoped that the song was to be followed with and interview but, no. After she had her 3 minutes, she left the stage and disappeared. Jewel has a very seductive way of having her eyes half-closed, however a friend called me and asked me if she was high or something. I guess even Freudian gestures like that can be misunderstood. *smile* Yesterday was a wonderful day, filled with Jewel! I hope she will return to Sweden soon again! That's it for now! Take care!! / Jonathan Stockholm, Sweden PS. The TV-charity got 42'413'370 SEK, about US$ 5'655'116 and was arranged by the Red Cross and other 3rd world help organisations. PS2. one of the major paper in Sweden; "Aftonbladet" wrote a concert review today and called her a "Unfinished diamond - the holder of some talent but with too many rough edges" He gave her 3 starts of 5 possible. You know living on the land is a wonderful thing I think it gives you an honesty and a discipline that a lot of people lack. *soft laugh* I: Now tell me, you had a Swiss grandmother... JK: Grandparents I: Grandparetns! And eh was it your grandmother that taught you how to yodel? JK: My dad taught me how to yodel I: Tell me about the yodelling, you incorporate this into your live routine JK: Sometimes. Um, its nothing that I really think to much about, its something that I have being doing since I was six and its a bit like selling used cars. You know like *laughs* its a trick. I: Well I've never sold any used cars and I've never yodelled either so how easy would it be to teach me the basics of yodelling? JK: Probably pretty simple, wanna give it a try? I: Go for it... JK: You just go from your low voice to your high voice and as you slide up from your low register to your high register there is a crack so .. *gives example yodel* I: *makes pretty bad attempt* JK: Pretty good, you almost had a crack there I: But has it got to be a sharp.. JK: you have to push, push more like .. *gives another example yodel* I: *another bad attempt* JK: Perfect I: In tone as well, tone would help wouldn't it JK: *laughs* I: So that's come from obviously the Swiss side of the family, isn't it? JK: My dad didn't actually learn to yodel until he came to America, off of cowboy albums actually, so.. I: There we are I was trying to think of famous yodellers of our time but not to many spring to mind .. Slim Whitman! there we are JK: Jimmy Rodgers I: Aye there you are, see loads, loads, were these the influences in your life because I know you did come from a musical family, was there a lot of music about the house? JK: Yeh, but never records ot anything like that just my dad was a songwriter and he taught me songs that were his and other songwriters but I wasn't raised listening to music really. I: So when did it all come about, when did you first start creating what are now .. songs for you. When did you first get into this pattern if you weren't, you know, surrounded by music when you were young? JK: Um, well being raised performing as a kid you know at the age of six I started singing on stage, at aged eight I was an actual duo with my dad and was a professional musician touring around bars and all that. So its always been in my blood and my lifestyle to be a performer and I 've always written poetry so when I picked up the guitar around sixteen or seventeen it was just a natural thing and a real accidental thing .. um .. I just didn't know better. I: Importantly your writing, was this personal about things that you were experiencing or was it just you just start on something and go off on a tangent? JK: Um, it was I think a real survival skill for a while in my life when things got really hard .. um .. I sort of lost all equilibrium and used writing as sort of a steady, you know, something to steady my self upon. To help me understand myself and what I was going through .. um .. it was kinda like having a friend or something, or therapist or something and a, its become a real crutch for me and a good way of really coming to depend on writing. I: So what is the songwriting process for you do you sit down and write a poem and then you put music to it or do you find it all comes together now? JK: It all starts with an emotion .. um .. I know its the right word the right melody if it doesn't dilute the power of the emotion, um, other than that it doesn't really matter, words can come first, melody can come first, it just sort of forms its self around the emotion. I: Alright what are you going to do for us next? JK: I'll do it off the album, it called, I wrote this when I was sixteen, so its an old song, its called Who Will Save Your Soul.... *sings WWSYS and is in really good voice* I: Who Will Save Your Soul including the yodel as well I noticed JK: *laughs* a bit I: Incorporated there a little smidge. Um, you went on to study the arts and encapsulated the whole lot now do you think that this helped in the process or do you think that it was there anyway, what you have, the talent you have? JK: Definitely helped, its always good to get out of where you grew up, its always highly recomended *laughs* as well the artistic integrity of that school the kids practised eight hours a day as well as there academics it was just a very talented environment so put the pressure on you to do better.. I: How long did you study for? JK: Just a couple of years I: Then after that, as is often the pattern you found you had to go out and work for a living, you mentioned earlier on that you were waitressing and living in a van. You went to San Diego is that right?... JK: Uhuh I: ..to join your mum there, now San Diego doesn't strike me as a sort of musical.. JK: mecca *laughs* I: ..place not exactly of the States. JK: I didn't go there to do music. I: Right JK: Um, I'd just started writing songs I'd just wrote WWSYS at that point and I didn't think that I was a song writer and I didn't think that anyone should be hearing what I was doing. Um, I just wanted to figure out what I was supposed to be doing with my life, what was my purpose what would fill me with passion because I was pretty miserable doing nothing. Um, so I got a bunch of odd end jobs and ended up getting, you know, fired or quitting from most of them. I: Why? JK: Why did people fire me? I: Hmm JK: Oh you now if your heart isn't in it... I: *laughs* JK: ..and finally when I got fired from my last job I just decided thats it screw the world I don't know what its all about I just want to make a living, I think that I deserve to live doing something that I like, um, and not comprimising myself constantly and decided that I would rather die than do something that I didn't like anymore and I started singing in a coffee shop never with the idea of getting a record deal out of it, I didn't think I was that good. I just wanted to do it every night and you know make enough money to get around during the day. I: So there you are you got signed and the rest is beginning to become history, lets take another pause there and you've got another little tune for us JK: This is a new one ... my throats really shot *laughs* I'll try it this is called Strangers *sings strangers, again she is in great voice and doesn't falter once, great stuff* I: I have to say I'm very impressed on two counts. I've sat here and watched you play the three pieces of music beautifully, and you have managed to maintain chewing gum in your mouth at the same time... JK: *laughs* I: ...now I was thinking how does she manage to do this, this is obviously a talent which you acquired back in the days when it was a bit rough and you obviously you had to save your gum at all costs, rather than stick it behind the ear. JK: Thats right *laughs* during the depression I: Keep the gum! Dont lose the gum! Um, and here we are. JK: And here we are now. I: With the album, which we are going to look at, this is the only album we have of now at the moment. Lets talk about this for a moment. The songs, I was going through them last night, are these all personal experiences that you yourself have gone through, cause there is a very dark side to a lot of the lyrics. JK: Like what? I: Oh I mean, saying that your dad was possibly a member, well my interpretation as that your daddy, there was a lot of hatrid, was he a member of the KKK. JK: *laughs* No! I: No JK: But that is what the song is about, no it isn't about my dad. Um, I draw it from, you know, partially from my own life from, you know, we've all been pissed at our dads so I definitely could put a bit of that in.. I: Well thats a bit severe if your a little miffed at your dad *laughs* JK: But it wasn't about him, it was about a friend of mine who wasn't allowed to watch black people on TV when we were growing up and I think if you are raised by hatred you become hateful so it was a song for her. I just put it in the first person, I'm just a story teller, I'll write things in the first person of I think it tells the story well. I: I see, Pieces of You as well, that also deals with prejudice so is there anything on the album that is personal to you? JK: It is personal, most of it is personal, in a way that most things are. The morning song was pretty personal or a .. *she chews gum loudly* Sorry! I: Its all about going back to your gum, you see I wasn't lying gum is there to be heard by all. JK: *laughs* Rude kid! WWSYS was about things I was directly thinking about America you know, the state of things over there. I: As we pointed out at the beginning of the program this was all quite a few years ago and there is a lot, a lot more to come from Jewel. JK: Yeh I: But you are here and you are hopefully determined to stick around JK: Uhuh I: Jewel thanks very much indeed for joining me tonight best of luck because now you are going to do some live dates in November JK: Yep I: And we are going to finish with your new single You were meant for me. Jewel, thanks JK: Thanks! *plays the version off the CD* ------------------------------------------------------ This was the first time I had heard her be interviewed and aint she great... ;) Ahh, and she is on Jools Holland this week, fantastic! I had been worried that it'd be some big VIP, special invite, or radio station only type thing due to the fact that it might be taped by MTV/VH-1, etc etc. There is no word on ticket price or date the tickets go on sale, but I will keep calling back until there is. :) So any Las Vegas EDA's or EDA's who want to make a fabulous trip to Las Vegas for New Year's , let me know and maybe we can have a little "gathering" before the show. The second best Jewel show I've ever seen (Just beaten by the one in Berlin) So here's the set list... Don't Everything Breaks Carnivore SIBTW /w Bob Dylan story New Song (??? Kiss your ass???) POY /w Supermodel story /w Rolling Stone Cover story Stranger Enter From The East Boy Needs A Bike Morning Song Cold Song Race Car Driver New Song (??? Drifting Without An Anchor???) WWSYS Last Dance Rodeo Near You Always FG /w guitar no keyboard YWMFM Angel Standing By Encore: Face Of Love together /w Nedra Little Bird ??? sung by Nedra Chime Bells As you can take it from the set list it was absolute fabulous (unfortunately my batteries went out during Last Dance Rodeo, too bad but sometimes it be that way) She was wearing the same dress like Stuttgart (black and brown). There were about 500 people at the concert. It was said that it was sold out but in the end they were passing out tickets FOR FREE !!!!! Yes the prices go down when the concert starts even when it was only Simon Warner who was singing at the moment... Although there were a lot of people it was very intimate. The Mozartsaal at the 'Alte Oper' is a great hall with two floors and looking very small. I had fifth row seats and it seemed to be a lot nearer to the stage than before in Stuttgart because there was no space between front row and stage and it was shaped like an U... Jewel was in an excellent mood tonight . The audience was filled with a lot of english speaking people maybe that was the reason. She talked A LOT. During the whole set some remarks about sports teams, guys making nasty sounds.... And the stories she told were really looooooong. It was fantastic :-) For the encore she brought up Nedra to sing along 'Face Of Love'. Nedra started, then the next verse by Jewel and finally both were singing together. Well, kind of singing, they never finished the song and were laughing all the time and making jokes. After that song Jewel announced the next one as a lullaby her mother always sung to her. It was her favorite and it may be called 'Little Bird' (anyone more info on that one???) Nedra was singing alone with Jewel sitting next to her on the floor. It was incredible. Everybody was silent just Nedra singing... The the concert ended with Chime Bells. Although we were waiting for more the lights went on immediately. So no more encores but it was great nevertheless. So the next one is tomorrow in Hamburg but I don't think it could get better in a hall with that much people. Just a brilliant evening Take care everyone and many *hugs* (almost directly from Jewel :-)) Marian A German EDA From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Wed Oct 29 18:38:15 1997 Return-Path: Received: by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4-jewelq-jane) id SAA00749; Wed, 29 Oct 1997 18:34:37 -0500 Message-Id: <199710292334.SAA00749@jane.smoe.org> To: Jewel-News@smoe.org From: ducksoup@spectra.net Date: 29 Oct 97 15:28:20 -0800 Subject: Jewel News: Foolish Games CD single (import) hits USA stores! :) Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk content-length: 1529 Hey folks :) I don't recall anyone previously reporting finding it in stores in North America so here goes. I just came from two stores (Circuit City & Borders) that had the Australian IMPORT of the Foolish Games CD single (the radio/Batman & Robin soundtrack version of Foolish Games). So I'm sure it will be popping up all over the place now in stores that carry import CDs. (by the way, many basic CD stores DON'T carry imports, so it's best to call around) Also on the disc (as previously reported) is "Everything Breaks" and "Angel Needs A Ride". It costs $9.99 at Circuit City and $10.99 at Borders (at least in these here parts) The disc is put out by Warner Music Australia, and the catalog number is 7567-85421-2 For new folks on the list and others that may not have read this before, as last reported from Jewels' management, there are no plans to release a regular/domestic CD single of this version of Foolish Games, so if you want that version *and* the other two tracks, you'll have to get this import CD. (Of course the Batman & Robin soundtrack has just Foolish Games on it) Mike :) * The Jewel Mailing List Netiquette & New Member Guide is at: * http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup * * If you are new to the list and need someone to guide you * please check out the "Adopt A Newbie" page at: * http://www.geocities.com/wellesley/3079/newbies.html * * If you have list related questions, feel free to email me * at Ducksoup@spectra.net * * DuckofPrey@aol.com WhyADuck55 on AOL Instant Messenger From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Wed Oct 29 18:44:02 1997 Return-Path: Received: by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4-jewelq-jane) id SAA00730; Wed, 29 Oct 1997 18:32:48 -0500 Message-Id: <199710292332.SAA00730@jane.smoe.org> To: Jewel-News@smoe.org From: ABershaw@aol.com Date: 29 Oct 97 12:06:08 -0800 Subject: Jewel News: MrBB-Rugburns with Jewel on 12/31/97 & various San Diego stuff Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk content-length: 591 Hi, The Rugburns are also now on the bill for Jewel's New Years Eve gig at The Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas. :-) Call the venue for all ticket info. The New York Post reports that the publisher has agreed to pay the "You Were Meant for Me" chanteuse a whopping $2 million for a chronicle of her twenty-three years on the planet. That works out to about $87,000 a year, for those keeping track, and it's reportedly one of the largest advances ever given to a pop star. Jewel, who has released only one album, grew up in Alaska and for a time lived in her car while awaiting her big break. The advance is only the latest in a string of huge celebrity payouts, most of which have resulted in underperforming works, including Paul Reiser's Babyhood and Jay Leno's Leading With My Chin. Harper-Collins hopes that Jewel will appeal to that all-important and fast-growing teen market. In addition to her memoir, which will be released next fall in conjunction with her second album, Jewel will also write a volume of poetry. Look for that to hit shelves next June. =A0=20 =A0=20 From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Fri Oct 31 00:58:19 1997 Return-Path: Received: by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4-jewelq-jane) id AAA17198; Fri, 31 Oct 1997 00:53:49 -0500 Message-Id: <199710310553.AAA17198@jane.smoe.org> To: Jewel-News@smoe.org From: fclark@ecst.csuchico.edu Date: 29 Oct 97 17:55:18 -0800 Subject: Jewel News: Rugburns with Jewel on 12/31/97 Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk content-length: 327 Just called the Rard Rock and thought I'd save everyone a call if they can't afford the tickets (like me).
