It's like a teen magazine, neither of us had heard of it before. On page 18 is "25 Things You've Never Heard About Jewel" It has the full page pic of the one where she's laying on the orange couch playing with her shirt. I knew most of it, some things were told differently than I had heard before. But I didn't know #8, it says Jewel was home-schooled until the fourth grade. I also didn't know #12, it says at Interlochen, she had the lead in a play called Spoon River Anthology. Her part was a dead woman who tells tales from her gravestone. There was lots of mentions of the EDAs!! Here are some: #22 Last May, her unofficial fan club-the EveryDay Angels (EDAs)--registered a star in her name for her birthday. Now, Jewel Kilcher, Jewel of the North, shines just inside the Little Dipper. #23 Jewel had a small concert--Jewelstock--in upstate New York last year just for EDAs. Admission was free! #24 Sometimes Jewel loses her lyrics! She couldn't remember the words of an old song during a recent European tour, so her mom called an EDA who e-mailed the song to Jewel. Also, to the side it says: Join Jewel's online fan club! Wanna be an EveryDay Angel? Join the online mailing list by...(blah, blah, blah) It's crazy, so expect to get 60 to 90 messages a day! If you just wanna keep up with Jewel news....(blah, blah, blah) It's an interesting article. I have to give it back to my friend tomorrow. :( Here's where I go in for the kill and ask/convince her to tear it out and give it to me! :) Have a nice day! Peace, Priscilla. Billboard Bulletin reports that a live double album from the tour is expected in late March/early April on Temple Records, the label owned by Lilith Fair founder Sarah McLachlan. The album will be distributed by Arista in the U.S. and Nettwerk in Canada; no plans have been made for release outside of North America. The highly successful all-women festival, which ran July 5-Aug. 24, featured McLachlan, Jewel, Fiona Apple, and Sheryl Crow, among many others. All the shows were recorded, and McLachlan will play a large role in selecting tracks for the live album, which is still untitled. She aims to include at least one track from every participant in the festival, including second-stage and local acts, subject to approval from the artists and their labels. Lilith Fair will receive additional exposure when film footage from the Aug. 15-16 Toronto shows is aired on the Canadian Broadcasting Corp., on a date to be announced. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ my web page has moved, got a new look, and has been updated! http://www.cantnot.org/rusty you just got an email from rusty, agentorange2@juno.com From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Fri Sep 5 09:18:41 1997 Return-Path: Received: by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4-jewelq-jane) id JAA08780; Fri, 5 Sep 1997 09:16:13 -0400 Date: Fri, 5 Sep 1997 09:16:13 -0400 Message-Id: <199709051316.JAA08780@jane.smoe.org> Received: from emout08.mail.aol.com by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4-daemon-mode-relay2) id IAA08657; Fri, 5 Sep 1997 08:48:03 -0400 From: ABershaw@aol.com Received: (from root@localhost) by emout08.mail.aol.com (8.7.6/8.7.3/AOL-2.0.0) id IAA08499; Fri, 5 Sep 1997 08:46:44 -0400 (EDT) To: jewel@smoe.org, jewel-news@smoe.org Subject: Jewel News: MrBB-Jewel Touring Updates content-length: 1830 Hi, I'll return to email access on Monday & I should have an updated itinerary waiting for me. However if you don't live in the Metro Detroit area it will be kinda hard to get your hands on this one. SO, being as nice as I am I decided to type it out for all of you :) Jewel -Russel Trunk Jewel is sitting patiently in front of me, her taut T-shirt depiction that of a skull and cross bones; the words "tin-Tin" written above in blood-red scrawl. I settle myself in and begin to fire off my carefully orchestrated questions. Orbit: What do you miss most about prefame? Jewel: I think silence. I miss that a lot. Simplicity, but then again it beats my waitressing days. I'm lucky. My dream is now my living. Most people's dreams are their hobbies. I get to make money doing something I love, and I get to inspire people to do the same. O: What about the growing lack of privacy? Jewel: Well, luckily I've been able to adjust to it by degrees. YOu have to. I have no choice. It's my life now. It's a good life, a little freaky, but definitely good. O: Talking of waitressing, what other jobs have you had? Jewel: Ditch digging. Ranch hand, like a ranch cook. Secretary, hostess and a waitress. O: So, you could cook me a nice meal then? Jewel: I like to cook a lot, but I don't ever get the chance to anymore. I'm really a healthy kid. O: Are you a vegetarian? Jewel: No, more of an "opportunivore." O: Which would be...? Jewel: I'll eat whatever's available. I love flavor. I love sushi and I like things that involve art and arranging. I'm big on all that. O: SO when did you first learn you had this wonderful song writing talent? Jewel: I learned that I'm not really a song writer. I mean I am, but by accident. It's nothing I meant to do, it just comes natural to me. It's how my head works. I never meant to write a #1 song. I didn't think "You Were Meant For Me" or "Who Will Save Your Soul" were #1 singles, but that's how I approach writing. Just write and if they work, they work. That's my job. O: Having worn a $12,000 dress to the Grammys, don't you ever think that you're just not in control anymore? Jewel: Sometimes, yeah, but it's been building for a long time. It didn't happen overnight. It took three long years, so things happened slowly enough for me to start adjusting. The Grammys and the MTV Music Awards both freaked me out. I felt so uncomfortable. I mean, there were all these stars and there I was, this dorky farm girl. I still feel that way. I'm still this dumb country girl. Dirt under my nails, if anybody looks close enough. But I'm more comfortable these days. We're all the same, we're all children that have grown up. O: But it must get irritating when you get pricks like Howard Stern's roving reporter Stuttering John tracking you down and being rude. Jewel: Of course, yeah, but in this business you have to allow it. He caught me at the Grammys, and I told him to get f@#$ing serious. That kind of gonzo journalist, whatever they call it, is not really being a good human. I'm a real person. I'm not precious, but I think the press can portray me as being so, because I really care about people. I have very lofty, optimistic ideas, and I'm not one-sided at all. I grew up cussing and I'm trying to quit, but I still get caught cussing all the time at my shows. I'm not prefect at all. O: So, is there life after the music business? Jewel: Yeah, there are a lot of things I'd like to end up doing. I'd like to go back into marble carving, dance, sculpture... O: You said "Go back into..."? Jewel: I did all that. I was studying that prior to living in my car and doing this. I spent my junior and senior years at Michigan's Interlochen Fine Arts Academy on a vocal scholarship. I miss all that immensely. I loved visual arts, but I'm going into acting, and I hope to produce. There are a lot of things I will get my fingers into, but I just want to live my life doing what I love. O: Sum yourself up in three words. Jewel: Simple. Learning. Female. Orbit: Tell me a joke. Jewel: Okay, a clean joke would be...er...There's this guy who gets brought into jail for killing a bald eagle, and the judge asks him why he did it. The guy says he's sorry, and that he didn't know it was illegal, he was just trying to feed his family. The judge says okay, we're gonna let you off, but you have to pay a fine. The guy says okay. So the judge says, before you go, would you tell me what it tasted like? The guy says, oh, you know, it actually tasted somewhere in between a California Condor and a Great Spotted Owl! (Looking at my face to see if I got the joke, I quickly note that these were other endangered species. She nods. She then goes into a dirty joke which has a far more visual ending, and to be quite honest, would take several detailed sketches to fully get across. Sorry.) There's also a pic of her singing. Cute, eh? :) love, Jenn ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Tue Sep 9 19:20:17 1997 Return-Path: Received: by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4-jewelq-jane) id TAA15859; Tue, 9 Sep 1997 19:04:10 -0400 Message-Id: <199709092304.TAA15859@jane.smoe.org> To: Jewel-News@smoe.org From: tra3@hotmail.com Date: 8 Sep 97 13:16:36 -0800 Subject: Jewel News: Jewel in JANE Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk content-length: 516 Hi All, there is a one page snippit on the Lilith Fair in the premier issue of JANE magazine that has Drew Barrymore on the cover. I have been involved in tape trading for about three years and have traded tapes of Prince, Billy Joel, Musicals, and more...Oh yeah, I guess I have a few Jewel tapes too!!!! :-) My introduction to tape trading was through a Prince list similar to the one I am starting here. Due to the kindness and generosity I have witnessed in my trading experiences, I would like to give something back in the form of this Jewel traders List Guidelines This List To be included in this list, simply send an e-mail to me (or fill out form online), and I will add your info as soon as possible. In this e-mail please include all information contained in the other listings. I will also provide a monthly e-mail of an updated list to all interested. Please state in your subscription e-mail whether you want the e-mail or just to be included. I ask that to keep this list up to date, that you update your entry at least once every three months. If you have no changes, simply send me a message saying to change your update date. This will prevent old addresses and those no longer trading from being on the list. Courtesy This list is not only for those who already have tapes, but to help new traders as well. If you are willing to help, please say so in your info. As a courtesy to these individuals, please do not take advantage of there generosity. If all people receive are requests for tapes, they will likely stop granting them. I ask that anyone with the capability of dubbing to please join as soon as they have even one tape to trade. Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk content-length: 3031 Another, truly, incredible show by Jewel!!! The set-list was incredible, as you will see in a moment. The show lasted about an hour and forty five minutes. There where a few key moments during the show that are worth mentioning. I'll post them after the set-list. set list-9/8 Penn State, rec hall Smart In A Stupid Way (during David Baerwald's set) Don't 1000 Miles Away Sometime's It Be That Way (alot slower than normal) Everything Breaks Sometime (I'm still in shock! I couldn't believe it!) Cold Song Little Sister Near You Always Daddy (with shaddy character/cosby show verse) Nicotine Love (yay!) Race Car Driver (yippie!) *band enters* Satellite ("here's a song you never heard before"...hehe, ok Jewel) Been Down So Long Who Will Save Your Soul Love Me Just Leave Me Alone Down Dancing Barefoot Morning Song You're In Cleaveland Today (yay!) Carnivore You Were Meant For Me You Were Meant For Me Rocked Out Version (WOOO HOOO!!!!) Foolish Games *exit Jewel and Band* *Encore-enter Jewel* Just Passing Time Angel Standing By (shhhh! dedicated to Princess Diana & Mother Theresa) Amen *exit Jewel* *Encore #2-enter Jewel again* Chime Bells ("you were a great audience, so, I guess I should yodel for you." Notable comments about the show: Suprisingly the crowd was great. I had my doubts, with it being a college campus and all. The crowd was even respectfull towards David Baerwald, which was nice to see. Jewel wore her cowboy hat. Jewel commented how this was one of the nicer audiences of the tour. Crowd pleasers where: Cold Song, Race Car Driver, YWMFMrov, Foolish Games, Chime Bells She said that Nicotine Love was written about the same time as Painters and that they are Yin & Yang for each other. She stretched out the ending while humming along with the guitar lines...that was nice! Been Down So Long, Love Me Just Leave Me Alone, and Down keep getting better and better...I think the band are the tightest during these songs. During YWMFM Jewel sang "got my maple syrup from Vermont 'cause I like the real thing, everything but you" The band really messed up YWMFM, somehow they got really off and Jewel just cracked up and was looking at each of them while laughing. during YWMFMrov Jewel screwed up the words and sang "la la, fucking words" and also "hearts are broken every god damn day". The crowd roared at both of these lines. Foolish Games, I felt was a little weaker than the last time I saw it in NJ 8/30. Don't get me wrong it was still great. Jewel surprised the rec hall staff by coming back out to sing Chime Bells...they had just started to turn the lights on, when she came back out, they turned them off again. I waited outside, with a small crowd, by the buses, hoping to meet her. But after waiting almost 2 hours she came out waved and got on the bus. Craig Young(the bass player) did walk around and talk with us, which was cool! This was definitely a memorable night! I don't usually post to the lists, but after the review that was posted of the Cleveland show, I thought I might provide a different opinion of the show as well as a setlist. I'll post details at the end of this, but first here is the setlist as best as I can recall it: joins David Baerwald onstage for You're Smart In A Stupid Way Jewel's Set: [w/o her band] Don't Near You Always No Need To Explain Just Passing Time Daddy Louisa And Her Blue Guitar Love Me Just Leave Me Alone Race Car Driver Satellite [her band joins onstage during this one, and remains for the duration of the regular set.] A song I don't know the name of (sorry) You're In Cleveland Today Who Will Save Your Soul Morning Song Down Carnivore You Were Meant For Me Foolish Games [Encore... solo again; no band] I'm Sensitive Angel Standing By Amen Chime Bells I do agree with Donny's review in that we did leave rather early and it was disappointing that Jewel didn't really tell any stories as she is known to do. However, I thought that David Baerwald put on a good set... in fact, he's one of the better opening acts I've seen this year. The crowd didn't take to him, though, and talked over him the entire set, which I thought was a little rude. The only time they listened to him was when Jewel joined him. Anyway, Jewel came out and played solo for a while, and then the band joined in on Satellite and remained for the rest of the regular set. The other review posted said that her band drowned her out. From where we were sitting, no one had any trouble at all hearing Jewel's voice while the band played along with her... though I will admit that the acoustics at Nautica Stage are somewhat inconsistent. Also, the crowd was screaming most of the time Jewel played and did more to drown out her voice than the band. She finally tried to, "Sssshhhhhh!" everybody for Angel Standing By and did manage to get everyone quiet for a few seconds, but as soon as she started the lyrics there were the screams again. Anyway, I and everyone I know who went, thought Jewel played a great, if somewhat short, show!! Also, understand that I wrote this not as an attack on Donny or Donny's review, but simply to offer another opinion of the show and provide a setlist. Take care everyone. Here's a brief memo from Lenedra explaining it somewhat. Dear EDAs, After our recent announcement for the September 20th benefit concert in San Diego, several questions arose about Common Ground, the non-profit foundation we are currently in the process of creating. To clear up any confusion, I thought it helpful to provide an update on Common Ground and why this foundation is being established. As you all know, Jewel receives literally dozens of requests for charitable contributions every day. To assist us in prioritizing selection of charitable contributions we have set up a non profit organization. The foundation will receive, review and render decisions on all charitable contributions based on essential social and spiritual issues. Early in 1998 a press conference will be held to present Common Ground and its endorsees. -Lenedra BiBi also told me that an official announcement will be made at the show itself so stay tuned for further details. Well....they pretty much bashed the Lilith fair, and Jewel along with it. They say "I suppose we should all be thankful that the Lilith Fair took place. It is nice to see so many women on the charts, *even if some are whiny coffeehouse wenches like Jewel*." Well, darn....I can only guess that the woman who wrote this was jealous. She goes on to say that the performers in Lilith Fair were too tame of women and that they would be better joining things like Lollapalooza than being on their own. I remind you, this was written by a woman. I guess she has no idea how hard it is to be a female singer/songwriter out there today and that Lilith was probably a breakthrough for equality in music for women. We got there.. just hung out a bit.. I bought a ticket from some guy but Steve was ticketless :< We found Dave Baerwald soon afterward and we had a couple words with him. His fave Jewel song is "Amen" he says :) When he found out about Steve's ticket problem, he went back inside and got him a ticket and an after-show pass. Well, then.. that was cool. So we sat in line a little bit longer and Steve wandered off... Soon he came back and asked if we wanted to go backstage a bit.. Figuring that only Dave would be back there, I said sure why not.. But I walked around the truck parked near there and no sooner had I but I was standing face to face with Jewel K... our little angel! :) Of course, I got her autograph, I mean I just love to see what people would write down, ya know? She wrote: "Linda - EDA's RocK! <\/> \/ Jewel" And wow was that neat. I even got pictures taken of her and Dave. She called Dave a cynical bastard, jokingly.. And when he got up to do his set later he said "I'm a cynical bastard, damnit" :) We got free food from the buffet table... yum We sat first row :P hehehe nah I'm not teasing... I just thought it was cool... BTW, those of you that don't know.. Jewel is like the best hugger in the world... And she likes Kraft Macaroni And Cheese... that discussion came up after I gave her a "macaroni-and-cheese" colored Crayola Crayon.. She demolished it by peeling it and stuff but not after she signed someone's notebook with it. She seemed very happy and very approachable and very sweet which was very good... A lot of college guys outside were yelling for her and she went to her bus and came back and she said something then one guy said "Shh she's going to say something" and she asked them "Why do you guys have to act so stupid?" When she was in high school, Jewel didn't paint her nails or wear makeup. Her acting teacher says, "She just didn't care. She was a unique little flower." 14. Jewel liked to stroll around school barefoot. 15. She modeled for a sculpture class for extra dough, often writing and singing new songs in between poses. 16. When she needed extra money for school, she was forced to sell Clearwater. 17. While living in her van and playing coffeehouses in San Diego, Jewel had to wash up in Kmart bathrooms. 18. Infamous for forgetting to bring guitar picks to her shows, Jewel often borrowed them from other musicians. 19. Her early shows at the Inner Change Coffee House in San Diego were so jampacked with fans that she often had to walk across tables to get to the stage. 20. After her shows she'd shake hands with everyone and thank them for coming. 21. Jewel liked to leave kooky messages on her answering machine. 22. Last May, her unofficial fan club-the Every Day Angels (EDAs)-registered a star in her name for her birthday. Now , Jewel Kilcher, Jewel of the North, shines just inside the Little Dipper. 23. Jewel had a small concert-Jewelstock-in upstate New York last year just for EDAs. Admission was free! 24. Sometimes Jewel loses her lyrics! She coudln't remember the words of an old song during a recent European tour, she her mom called an EDA who e-mailed the song to Jewel. 25. She likes to tweak noses, and even squeezed Bob Dylan's beak when she opened for him last spring. (And on the side of the page it says:) Join Jewel's online fan club. Wanna be an Every Day Angel? Your consideration is much appreciated. However, I'm still getting several emails per day from new EDAs wishing to send gifts to Jewel. I want to re-iterate Jewel's request to you regarding gifts. As you know, she recieves a ridiculous amount of gifts from fans. She has requested that you NOT send or give her gifts. Knowing her feelings on this, if you still feel compelled to give a gift, she requests that you give the gift to someone else in both her & your name instead. I'm sure you can all think of someone somewhere who would benefit from a "surprise" gift. Please respect these wishes & refrain from writing me in regards to forwarding gifts to her. I thank you & Jewel thanks you for understanding on this issue. Best wishes, MrBB *********************************** New to the list? I've periodically sent this "work in progress" to this list to help educate new EDAs & because the list FAQ is still very limited & out of date. I'm no writer, so forgive the lack of style. This is simply to help fill a gap on a time period mysterious to many and of interest to most new listmembers. I've given Mike permission to include this on his "welcome to the Jewel list" page & I encourage all new folks to check it out his page anyway. It'll help new people immensely. It's at: http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup/ Anyway, this will soon be available there all the time & updated periodically. The girl who wrote the "Twist" magazine article was in touch with me & some of the new stuff was included there already. Big thanks to Neal Copperman & Jeff Hanson, whose original FAQ work was the basis on which my work began. New info has been added since last time, & I hope you all enjoy it. MrBB JEWEL-"Pre-POY Album Release" History ********************************************* PART 1-Brief Kilcher Family History: Jewel's grandparents, Yule Kilcher & his wife Ruth immigrated to Alaska from Switzerland in 1941. They settled in Homer on an 800 acre homestead on Kachemak Bay. (Yule later became state senator & was instrumental in drafting the state constitution. ) Yule & Ruth performed publicly throughout Alaska & Europe. The family musical tradition, together with Ruth's particular flair for ethereal verse and love of the natural world became key elements in the musical tradition passed down to their children (& grandchildren) that survives today. The family farm became well known, at first largely through the efforts of Yule, who made a film about the homesteading life and took it on lecture tours across the states and Europe. It was a difficult life & Ruth took refuge in music and writing. Ruth & Yule had 8 children named Mairiis, Wurtila, Fay, Sunrise, Otto, Stellavera, Catkin & Jewel's father Atz. ``Mom was the main musical force in the family,'' says Mairiis, Yule & Ruth's eldest daughter. ``Singing was always a big unifying force, no matter what other conflicts went on. You can't be mad at each other when you have to harmonize.'' Jewel Kilcher was born May 23, 1974 in Payson,Utah where Atz & Lenedra were living while Atz attended college nearby. (Jewel also has an older brother Shane,a younger brother Atz & a younger half brother Nikos.) Upon graduation from college, Atz & Lenedra moved their family back to Homer Alaska where Jewel & her brothers were raised on the 800-acre homestead. Jewel's parents became a popular Alaskan folk singing duo, well known regionally as Atz & Nedra Kilcher. They released their 1st self produced primarily acoustic album in 1977 entitled "Early Morning Gold". This album consists of original Alaskan folk songs written in collaboration or by Atz alone. Here's an edited excerpt written by Allen Reeves, who at the time of the release was President of the Anchorage Convention & Visitors Bureau: "The first time I ever heard Atz & Nedra Kilcher sing, I was struck by the honesty & simplicity of their beautiful folk music---and with the fact they are making history. You see, there has never before really been any Alaska folk music. Oh, there is ample ethnic music, but no real folk music. Not until Atz & Nedra put verse & melody to the spirit of the 'Great Land' The Kilchers paint a pure portrait of Alaska." In 1978 Atz & Nedra released their second album titled "Born & Raised on Alaska Land". This featured more elaborate production & again featured all originals with the exception of a song written by Atz's sister (Jewel's Aunt), Mairiis "Mossie" Davidson (who also released Alaskan folk albums regionally). **************************************************** Part 2: What happened prior to "Pieces Of You"? Jewel grew up on an 800 acre homestead her family owned on Kachemak Bay in Homer Alaska. From a very early age Jewel was exposed to the music of her family. They traditionally sang songs together before every meal. In 1980 at the age of six Jewel began accompanying her parents performing for locals & tourists in Alaskan villages, clubs & hotels. Her earliest musical influences consisted primarily of the music of her family and a particular fascination with Ella Fitzgerald. She also mastered the art of yodelling from her grandfather Yule Kilcher. Jewel was educated at home by family members until the 4th grade when she began attending public school. She suffered from dyslexia & had a difficult time learning to read & write. Her main interest, at this early age, was horseback riding & she spent many hours riding & caring for her very own horse named Clearwater. This included chopping plenty of hay so that Clearwater had plenty to eat over the long Alaskan winters. Lenedra, being very spiritually guided, developed Jewel's spiritual side & raised her with a sense of magic as well as an appreciation & deep respect for the Indian Way. A few years later Jewel's parents divorced & she remained with her father & brothers in Homer initially. When Jewel was 12 she convinced her parents to let her "see more of the world" by spending some time with an aunt in Hawaii. Needless to say, the blond Alaskan was quite an anomaly in Hawaii, but Jewel yodeled her way out of any playground disagreements. She was there for a few months and then returned to stay with her mother in Anchorage, Alaska. Writing became Jewel's expression of choice since she found herself unable to verbalize many of her strong feelings at this young age. She later became enamored by South American poets Pablo Neruda, Octavio Paz & Giaconda Belli. She also absorbed philosophers Kant, Plato, Dostoevski (& many others) as well as sensual writers such as Henry Miller & Anais Nin. At age 14, Jewel was "adopted" into the native Indian culture. She participated in a ceremony which included a "talking circle". During this she realized that although she had written for years, she was verbally speechless. Her "adopted" uncles took her for a walk & told her "you have a gift to give the world" and related various native Indian wisdom & folklore. (Note: Dig up a copy of a book called "Mindfire- Dialogues In The Other Future" by Alexander Blair-Ewart published by Somerville House. It includes an early interview with Jewel expanding on this time period & her experiences with the native Indian culture.) She then began a conscious effort to speak more from her heart & and began articulating her feelings. During this time she continued to perform with her father as a duo & later in a trio called "New Directions" which featured Jewel,Atz & their friend Suzanne Little. She also joined a local rap group called "Le Creme" briefly. It was over the course of this decade (1980-1990) that Jewel developed her vocal ability & her experience at working a crowd. Atz was a wonderful storyteller & Jewel absorbed his knack for "fun & entertaining between song banter". Her father also instilled an extremely strong work ethic & taught Jewel what a professional musicians life is all about. During this time, repertoire consisted of mainly Atz Kilcher originals with Jewel singing harmony & background vocals. However, Jewel did take lead vocals on popular cover songs of the day such as "Angel From Montgomery" by John Prine, "Me & Bobby McGee" by Kris Kristofferson, the theme from "The Rose", etc, as well as many others. In High School, Jewel began to accompany herself on guitar. Her junior and senior years of high school were spent at Interlochen Fine Arts Academy in Michigan. Here she studied sculpture, art, music & dance while pursuing a voice major. Interlochen is an expensive private school, and 70% of Jewel's first year tuition was paid for by a vocal scholarship. With the help of her Aunt Mossie & her mother Lenedra, the remainder of the expenses were raised at what turned out to be Jewel's first solo concerts. The citizens of Homer were supportive enough to cover the rest of the first year tuition. She also modeled (fully clothed) for sculpture classes for extra money, often writing & singing between poses. When extra money was needed, she was unfortunately forced to sell her beloved horse Clearwater. It was at Interlochen that Jewel's songwriting ideas began germinating. She also expressed an interest in acting, but Interlochen's policy didn't allow voice majors to participate in the drama program. She persisted in pestering the department until they granted her an audition. She ended up landing the lead role in that semester's play called "Spoon River Anthology" where she played a dead woman who tells tales from the grave. Her performance was so impressive, that Interlochen began accepting non-theater majors into their drama program. During this time she also began to build up a small repertoire of songs. She made a few demo recordings of eleven of these songs. These eleven demos consisted of her very first songwriting attempts. Other than "Don't"(then referred to as "Waltz") & "Dance Between Two Woman"(then simply titled "Dance"), the other 9 songs remain unreleased. Three of those nine ("Billy", "Can't Have My Soul" [NOT WWSYS] & "Money") continued into Jewel's early repatiore. The remaining half dozen being abandoned in favor of many new songs (including "Who Will Save Your Soul"). During Spring Break she joined Lenedra & fell in love with San Diego. The following year she was awarded a full scholarship & returned to Interlochen for her senior year. Upon graduation in the summer of 1992 (& after a brief stay in Boulder, Co,) Jewel again rejoined Lenedra in San Diego, which she now calls home. Jewel worked a variety of jobs including waitressing, but generally lost them when her interest in chatting with the customers surpassed her desire to do the actual job. Eventually she decided that working unfulfilling dead-end jobs was an unbearable way to live. With Lenedra's encouragement they moved out of their apartment, into their vans, to pursue their dreams. With lots of peanut butter, carrot sticks, and a guitar, Jewel settled down to write more songs. Around this time of new songwriting activity, she became very close to local songwriter, Steve Poltz & his band The Rugburns. They shared songs with each other & began collaborating on material. Steve taught Jewel how to better work within a "verse/chorus/verse" structure & his influence balanced her very serious writing style with his more humorous & spontaneous style.(They still periodically collaborate.) Her new ability to churn out songs was revealing a prolific talent at songwriting. She regularly debuted new songs to friends & this endeared her to the few who heard them. In late1993 & early 1994, she began performing sporadic gigs to sparse crowds at various area coffeehouses including one in Pacific Beach called The Innerchange. Word started to spread, and eventually she had a regular Thursday night spot there and an ever growing audience. Her name began to show up in the local press and she landed a few choice opening spots. She took an extended trip back to Homer at the end of the year, and things really took off when she returned to San Diego in early 1994. At the start of the year, the coffeehouse was roughly 60% full, and a mere $3 got you a 3-4 hour set of original material, with the only exception being an occasional cover of Tracy Chapman's "Behind the Wall". Becoming a prolific, versatile songwriter, Jewel still regularly debuted a handful of new songs at each show. These shows were a hotbed of local acoustic talent, and Jewel was regularly joined by frequent collaborator Steve Poltz. Fellow Rugburns Rob Driscoll and Gregory Page also joined them, as well as other local musicians including Joy Eden Harrison, Cindy Lee Berryhill, John Katchur and Byron Nash. Jewel also saw her first "official release" as a participant on 91X's sampler of area talent called "Saint Doug" around this time. She included a take of "Angel Needs A Ride". Everyone who saw her must have told five friends, since each week the crowd continued to grow. Soon, people were being turned away, while a few hardy souls could be seen staring through the large windows at the packed house inside. For extra money, Jewel put together a tape that she briefly distributed herself called "Shiva Diva Doo Wop" which contained the songs "1000 Miles Away", "She Cries","Painters" & "My Own Private God's Gift To Woman".The tape came with a j-card insert that also featured an original drawing by Jewel. Income was also supplemented by selling posters of original artwork by Lenedra which featured a blue background with a purple angel on it & the words "Participate In Miracles". The purple angel glowed in the dark & they sold for $5. The concept behind these posters was to buy two of them, keep one for yourself & post the other in a place you felt could benefit from its message. Around this time, the news of the young (19!) singer had gotten to L.A., and record executives started driving down to sleepy San Diego to catch the shows. They immediately recognized the quality of what they were seeing, and soon the limos were directed towards Jewel's van/home. She was wined & dined by various companies only to be dropped off back at her van. :-) After a brief courtship, she was signed to Atlantic Records by Jenny Price in March of 1994. They started making the trek up to L.A. looking for producers and musicians to record with. The advance on the record enabled Jewel to rent a house with Lenedra, & to purchase a new car (a used Volvo) and a new guitar (a steal due to an imperfection in the finish). All this added exposure continued to draw crowds to The Innerchange, which first added a second show, and then upped the admission price to $5. By this time, Jewel had written over a hundred songs. On July 28 and 29, 1994, a sound crew descended on The Innerchange to record 4 sets of Jewel on her home stomping grounds. All the live recordings on "Pieces of You" come from those two sessions. The remainder of POY was recorded at Neil Young's Redwood Digital Studio at his Broken Arrow Ranch in Woodside,CA during the following month. Atlantic prepared to help promote the album with a number of promotional items. The most popular of these is a CD called "Save The Linoleum". This was released to radio stations to promote the single "Who Will Save Your Soul" & featured both live & studio outtakes from the POY recordings. Included were unreleased versions of "My Own Private God's Gift To Woman", "I'm Sensitive","Race Car Driver", & "Flower". Also an EPK (electronic press kit) was produced for press release along with a contest to win a trip to San Diego. This EPK included a videotape called "Jewel & Mike Take San Diego". It featured an interview done by local DJ Mike Halloran & a brief tour through Jewel's life at the time. Besides interviews, footage included a tour of The Innerchange, the spot where she parked her van every night, surfing, hilarious footage inside Steve Poltz' apartment along with an impromptu duet of YWMFM & a home video of WWSYS. An official video was also produced for WWSYS for release to the video channels. Jewel began 1995 doing what is termed a "residency tour". January was spent rotating 5 nights a week from 5 California venues. Febuary repeated this procedure but hit a rotation of Washington DC, Philadelphia, Cambridge & NYC. It wound up in NYC at Ludlow Street Cafe on 2/28/95, the same day Atlantic released Jewel's album "Pieces Of You". Back home two days later, on 3/2/95, Jewel performed both an early & late show to friends & local supporters in celebration of the album's release at the Cosmopolitan Theater in San Diego. The second best Jewel show I've ever seen (beat out only by Jewelstock). The outside venue was beautiful (even saw some shooting stars, made a wish for 'Down', 'Carnivore', and 'Face of Love' and all 3 came true...woo-woo!) and the crowd was great! Until the final encoure, I only heard one shout for 'yodel' and I only heard one 'take it off' the whole night. During the last song, some guy climbed onstage and put his arm around Jewel for a picture and she didn't even blink. I'm not even pissed at the guy at all, cuz he didn't interrupt the show at all and when security removed him he walked with them without putting up any resistance. Would've been a different story if I'd of seen a frisbee though... Daddy had some new lyrics to it and if I actually got some sleep last night I might be able to tell them to you. I think Foolish Games was the trimmed down single version, not the longer album version, I like the album version better :( Down kicked ass! I really love this song! She told the NY Post racist story, but went into more detail this time, it was really funny! She said before WWSYS was a hit she played for a model-convention and...well, you'll just have to get the tape to hear this one, it's worth it! Some other stories she told were: the Daddy Story, Bob Dylan stolen lyric story, and the Fragile Flame story. Face of Love was a duet with Lenedra, and was excellent. I love this song too, and I'm so glad she played it. I can think of only two other times Jewel has sang it: Jewelstock, and the breast-cancer fundraiser. Lenedra sang the first verse, and closed out the song with some awesome high-notes. Wonder where Jewel got her talent... Angel Standing Bye was dedicated to the memory of Mother Teresa and Princess Diana of Whales. I thought this was an appropriate tribute because the song fit the sentiment, unlike the Spice Girls who made me want to puke at the MTV Awards. C'mon...dedicating a song, an award, and wearing black armbands was excessive. Plus, the song didn't fit at all. It's called tact, girls...look it up. (sorry, John-Eric) Speaking of which...the only thing missing at the show was JOHN-ERIC! WTF, OB isn't the same without you! I don't care if you have to hitchike...get your self to the next San Deigo Jewel show! OK, now for the personal stuff. Casey said "secruity was like nothing", well that's not what happened to me! While my friend walked right in with his bag and all I got mine checked for 30 seconds! I am not exagerating! The guy digged into my backpack for seriously 30 seconds! He was digging and squeezing and looking and poking and he finally found my tape recorder. I was so pissed! I had already got by one security guard and any other line I could've gone right in easy but this jack-hole had to almost full-body search me. I ended up stashing the tape player outside and walking in without it...damn. And the winner for the bone-head of the night goes to...SINJIN! I don't care what anyone else tells you, IT DOES NOT PAY TO BE NICE! Nice people get the shaft again and again! I was going to hang backstage with the rest of the EDA's, but I overheard some guy locked his keys in his car. Since I'm pretty good at breaking into cars I decided that it was 'more than just a coincidence' that he ran into me so I walked out of the venue to help him out. When I tried to return to the venue, security wouldn't let me in! I tried telling them that a friend had my wallet, but they wouldn't budge. Aaaagh! This makes the 4th time I've blown an opportunity to say 'hi' to Jewel. I'm now batting .200 (that's 1 in 5, or 4:1). Lesson learned tonight: bad things happen to nice people, not only was I not able to greet Steve and Jewel but I wasn't able to hang with some of my friends. >From now on, I'm gonna be an EDD (everyday devil)...cuz nothing bad ever happens to bad people. After striking out with security, we decided to get on the bus and drive home but the bus line was forever! (note to Java Joe...IT'S A RIGHT TURN!!!) So we started walking to our car because we thought it'd be faster. It took us a while to get our bearings and find our car, and wouldn't you know...as soon as we walk up to the car a bus pulls up with the group of people who were right behind us in line. Despite security and the walk, it was a great night! Steve was exellent and Jewel ruled! You haven't seen her until you've seen her in San Diego, the vibe there is so cool. Can't wait for the next show! Common Ground and the EDAF are separate groups, although we do hope to work together in the future. Efforts to establish an EDA-based charitable foundation were begun earlier this year. After much work and spirited discussion, the group has now largely established its structure and direction. A letter to the general Jewel list will be posted within the next week explaining how to obtain more information about the EDAF. We hope many of the EDAs will join us in making a difference in our communities, and truly live up to the moniker of "EveryDay Angels". Thanks angels. It's always been widely reported that Jewel grew up on an 800 acre homestead. However, Atz's sister Stellavera recently told an EDA that it was only 600 acres. I never thought to ask about this, but I was chatting with Jewel's dad, Atz, today & brought it up. He just emailed me the definative answer. Seems there's always more to the story than anticipated! ;-) Here's Atz's answer: My parents bought a homestead that was already proven up on house clearing land etc. It was bought with money that my mother got from her mother in Switzerland. They lived in that old fox trappers cabin, one room, about 12x14, for about 2 years until my dad completed a larger log house, 2 bedroom, 16x16 on the homestead they were homesteading. They each recieved 160 acres. So at this point the homestead totalled 320 acres. Then, in the late 60's or early 70's, my dad aquired 320 acres of "agricultural preferance rights land" adjoining the original land. This brought total homestead acreage up to 640 acres. My brother, sister and I bought 130 more acres next to the homestead also. So, in the Kilcher family, there is currently 770 acres. But the original land that I was raised on was only 320 acres. When Jewel lived out here, it was the 770 figure belonging to the family. How's that for a complete answer? Do I get extra credit?---Atz Well folks...There ya have it! :-) MrBB From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Fri Sep 26 10:51:19 1997 Return-Path: Received: by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4-jewelq-jane) id KAA05285; Fri, 26 Sep 1997 10:41:40 -0400 Date: Fri, 26 Sep 1997 10:41:40 -0400 Message-Id: <199709261441.KAA05285@jane.smoe.org> Received: from emout09.mail.aol.com by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4-daemon-mode-relay2) id WAA14466; Thu, 25 Sep 1997 22:15:37 -0400 From: W1GGY2@aol.com Received: (from root@localhost) by emout09.mail.aol.com (8.7.6/8.7.3/AOL-2.0.0) id WAA01424; Thu, 25 Sep 1997 22:14:15 -0400 (EDT) To: jewel-announce@smoe.org cc: jewel-news@smoe.org Subject: Jewel News: EDAF: EVERYTHING YOU WANT TO KNOW.... Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk content-length: 3463 Hopefully, this post will answer many questions you may have about the EveryDay Angels Foundation (EDAF).... IS THIS THE EDAF THAT WAS DISCUSSED EARLIER THIS YEAR? Yes! And it is once again alive and well, after we took a good hard look at ourselves and finally discovered what we're about and how we should be structured. That has now been done, so the fun part can begin! WHAT THE HECK IS THE EDAF? The EveryDay Angels Foundation is a non-profit group founded by EDAs and approved to carry the name by Jewel. The primary goal of the EDAF is to better society through the motivation and empowerment of individuals to truly act as "everyday angels". We will do this by starting at the individual and community levels, working our way up and outward (rather than the futile process of forcing change downward). We'll call this the TRICKLE UP theory. Our organization's strength lies at the grassroots level. Each region will focus on local causes. What we have which sets us apart from many other nonprofit organizations is an incredible ability to identify individuals across the country and throughout the world who care and want to reach out to others. We can then bring these people together to support and reinforce each other's efforts. IT HAS "EVERYDAY ANGELS" IN THE NAME. DOES THAT MEAN I AM A PART OF THE EDAF? While the foundation is inspired by Jewel and championed by many members of jewel@smoe.org, it is clearly an entity in its own right. It has been requested by both Jeff and Mike that discussion of the EDAF not be done on the "Jewel" list. Since we now have our own mailing list (which will be opened up to membership within the next two weeks), this is not only acceptable, but desirableotally separate process. HOW CAN I BECOME A PART OF THE EDAF? Criteria for joining the EDAF are now being finalized. We anticipate the initial membership will come from the Jewel list, and over time we will gain external support from a broad spectrum of our society. Anyone interested in learning more about the EDAF or wishing to get information on how to participate, please visit our new website at: http://www.theartof.com/edaf At this site is a regional map and links for pertinent information. Please visit often as we will be adding to it and keeping it updated with upcoming events and other valuable information. If you have any questions, please direct them to the regional coordinator identified on the website. Anyone who cannot get to this website should contact Tom Proven at horter3@aol.com for the further information. Please include your city/state/country information with your request. HOW DO COMMON GROUND AND THE EDAF FIT TOGETHER? Common Ground is Jewel's new non-profit organization. We believe that an announcement outlining that group's purpose is due to be released next month. The two organizations each have their own focus, and will hopefully work hand-in-hand in the future. While Common Ground will possibly handle group requests for charity work, we will be providing a much different service -- developing "Ambassadors of Action" to affect improvement in our communities. It seems that we are two highly complementary, synergistic organizations! IN A NUTSHELL... The EveryDay Angels Foundation hopes to find ways of recognizing and motivating the true "everyday angels" in this group, and the world around us. The EDAF is on the move, and you are welcome to join us! Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk content-length: 1462 Hey all, It seems that Lilith Fair was the most succesful concert tour of the summer after all. Apaprantly, Sarah, Jewel and company did indeed narrowly beat out Ozzy Osbourne's Ozzfest. Here is an excerpt from an article found today in Addicted to Noise that explains: "Outgrossing the opposite-end-of-the-gender-spectrum Ozzfest, a testosterone-heavy-metal package featuring big name acts and Ozzy Osbourne reuniting with Black Sabbath by several million dollars, the women of Lilith took the crown for the summer package tour champ. Based on figures gathered to date by concert industry trade magazine Amusement Business (sister publication of Billboard), Lilith outpaced Osbourne's Ozzfest '97, by more than 100,000 attendees. Both tours launched a full schedule of dates for the first time after dipping their toes in the water last year with a handful of trial shows. As of Sept. 24, with the numbers in on 27 of the 37-dates tour, the Lilith Fair, which featured McLachlan and a rotating list of female-fronted acts including Sheryl Crow, Tracy Chapman, Suzanne Vega and Jewel, grossed $12,278,833 with an attendance of 456,819 and 19 sell-outs, playing to 93 percent of capacity. That compares to 80 percent average capacity for the runner-up Ozzfest." The October 26 Muffathalle gig is in Munich Germany not Hamburg Germany as I recently mistakenly posted. All the other dates are correct. It should have read: 97/10/26 Muffathalle, Munich, Germany Also, on many of the dates labelled "Day Off", Jewel will be appearing on various local TV & radio shows in the various countries she happens to be in. So keep an eye out for those & report back to the list should you catch one. Thanks! The "plan" is for a mid 98 release of the next album still tentatively titled "Fritz Creek Store". She hasn't any recording sessions planned until late Feb & March of 98. Certainly sessions may happen before then but nothing is scheduled yet. She definately has a huge quantity of material written since Bearsville 96. I doubt everything from the Bearsville sessions will be scrapped, though. Carnivore, Satellite & Jessica are very likely candidates to survive the final cut for track lineup. Amazing versions of these were recorded in Bearsville. Still, it all depends on what becomes of all this "new" material & all the material she'll undoubtably write between now & then.... On the brighter side, Jewel contributed vocals on several collaboration songs recorded for Steve Poltz's new solo album. They recorded at Ocean Way Studios in Los Angeles a few days prior to the recent tour beginning. Some incredible new (& old) material was recorded. That album will surface in the next few months on the Mercury label. There'll also be Jewel's "You Make Lovin Fun" track on an upcoming Fleetwood Mac tribute CD as well as a "yet to be named" track recorded for another upcoming Creedence Clearwater Revival tribute CD. There won't be a lack of new released Jewel material between now & the 2nd CD. :-) Best wishes! I wanted to give Janeene a chance to do her thing, but I have several people looking for shirts so here is the offer again. Hello, everyone once again I want to offer the "Official" EDA T-shirt to the list. The shirt first became available back in May. Now that those of you who were away for the summer are back and there are plenty of new EDA's out there, I thought I would repost the offer for everyone. I am going to be ordering more shirts this week so if you need a special size (S, XXL, or XXXL) please order ASAP as I will be ordering very limited quantities of these sizes. Talk of an EDA shirt began last summer and some how I ended up in charge. When JewelStock was announced we decided to make a shirt to commemorate that instead. Over the Winter people started bugging me to make an EDA Shirt again. So, I did, and here is the information. The shirt was designed by me and approved by Jewel and Lenedra for sale to the EDA's. The image of Jewel of the shirt comes from a picture taken by EDA Krista Dooley at Jewel's Border's Cafe appearance in Boston in May of 1996. The font used on the shirt was done by the infamous Dennis Harris. The shirt itself is royal blue and the design is in black and yellow. The design is a picture of Jewel on the front along with the words "Everyday Angels." The back reads "EDA" in large letters and below that "eda-info@smoe.org" an address which auto-responds a brief FAQ about the mailing list. Below that is the angel from the JewelStock shirt redone in black and yellow. The shirt costs $15 plus $3 shipping per order (foreign order shipping is priced on an order by order basis). Since being introduced four months ago, over 250 shirts have been purchased by EDA from around the world. The shirt can be ordered via the web at http://www.cybercom.net/~pjk/EDA. If you do not have any web access, would like a jpeg of the design, or have any other question feel free to email me at this address. Thanks, Phil (The T-Shirt Guy)
