They reviewed another Lilith Fair, and this is the very favourable review that they gave Jewel: It was Jewel, however, who stole Tuesday's show. After more than a year of extensive touring, the Alaskan singer has matured significantly as a performer on big stages. Whereas 14 months ago she joked nervously during an opening slot in a summer shed, Jewel now rules that space confidently, even (especially?) in front of a sold out crowd of 15,000. Moreover, she's strengthened her arrangements. On "You Were Meant For Me," for example, an organ and cello added warmth amid the song's melancholy, but in doing so also accented the hurt inherent in the melody. Also, I'm very saddened to learn of Mr.BB leaving the list. I always looked forward to reading his inside scoops and news updates. His prescence certainly added a lot to this list and I am sure that his abscence will be greatly felt. Hopefully, he can be persauded to rejoin at a later date. Take care all and keep smiling. It was preceded with a pretty picture of Jewel clenching her teeth (probably in the midst of spurning miscellaneous men in "Love Me, Just Leave Me Alone") with the caption "Jewel, the 22-year-old quadruple platinum singer, wins the heart of the youthful crowd at Lilith Fair." Never mind she's really twenty-three. Boy, I haven't seen her in a while (April Fools' Day); her hair's getting long 'n luxurious. Carter ----- LILITH: HEAR THEM ROAR By Richard Harrington Though it sometimes resembled a subway system at rush hour, Tuesday's Lilith Fair at the Merriweather Post Pavilion overcame its crowdedness with a tremendously positive energy. A box office smash in a summer of touring festival failures, Lilith Fair has posited itself as a celebration of women -- specifically in music, but clearly in spirit as well. It's not a question of distaff separation -- singer-songwriters Fiona Apple, Joan Osborne, Jewel and Lilith Fair founder Sarah McLachlan all fronted predominantly male bands -- but of craft and sensibility. The men in Apple's band appeared in dresses, obviously in the spirit of the event. As remarkable as the talent was on the Post Pavilion stage, the jampacked grounds were perhaps more revealing: The crowd was split perhaps 65-35 female-male, and the attitude was clearly "sisterhood is powerful" (as well as commercially viable). And while there was a wide range of ages evident, there seemed to be a tremendous number of teenage girls, jubilant in Lilith Fair's familial embrace and the safe harbor it offered in comparison to most rock-and-roll road shows. The only problem was numbers: There seemed to be several thousand ticket buyers who were not afforded any sight lines to the stage, and the video screens were effective only with the Fair's last two acts, Jewel and McLachlan. While the sound was for the most part excellent, the quieter songs tended to dissipate the farther they traveled into the crowd. There's clearly room for improvement. The generally youthful demographic may explain why 22-year-old Jewel was able to steal -- well, perhaps borrow -- the show from headliner McLachlan. Jewel was this particular lineup's most commercially successful artist. Her debut album, "Pieces of You," just went quadruple platinum, and it was kick-started by Jewel's constant touring over the last two years. Hardly surprising, then, that she exuded a riveting stage presence that augmented here crystalline voice, one that's formidable for its range and power. In fact, after a desultory set by the Cardigans, Jewel was more energized and a greater presence as a solo acoustic than the Swedish band was with five pieces. Drawing mostly from her album, Jewel opened with "Near You Always," one of many meditations on the twin themes of romantic joy and despair that ran through her performance. Others included "Don't," "Morning Song," her current hit single "Foolish Games," and her previous video-driven hits, "You Were Meant for Me" and the more inclusive "Who Will Save Your Soul?" Midway through the set, Jewel was joined by her band, most effectively on a new Dylanesque folk-rocker, "Love Me, Just Leave Me Alone," less so on a cover of Patti Smith's "Dancing Barefoot." Her encore was "Amen," a spiritual meditation that hung in the air like mist. ----- Damn, I'm tired of typing. The rest of the article was kind reviews of McLachlan's and Apple's performances, less kind takes on the Osborne and Cardigans bits, and a complimentary footnote on Juliana Hatfield's second-stage act. (I will take you down... down - what is this one?) Dancing Barefoot (Patti Smith cover) Don't Foolish Games You Were Meant For Me Angel Standing By Encore: Amen After Near You Always she told her Denny's (though she didn't mention the restaurant name that I remember) washing hair in the sink story with the blue-hairs saying "She seems like a pretty enough girl- I wonder how she ended up like that?" But instead of the "F*ck you" at the end to them she said "I just hope one day that they Seee Meee!" It lost alot if you ask me... but there were kiddies around so it was nice in that way. She has developed this weird emphasis on the last sylable of words it seems. In Deep Water I especially noticed her putting a load of emphasis on the last words of phrases- more than the usual enunciation- I don't like it myself. Told her little story about how she doesn't like photos while she sings since it always gets her like (she poses in funny poses here). She also added that it looked like she was peeing when she was singing. Timing on I'm Sensitive was a little off at first, but she recovered nicely. She did the Tom Petty "Good" and "Food" thing- nice to hear it again. I hadn't heard of that in a while and really like it. The band came out for Morning song, which she used the lyrics from the album for with Miller and Nin. That's right kids- Glenn Miller and nine inch nails made a surprise appearance! You missed it. Even though they both wore dresses it didn't fool me. Heh, just seeing if you're reading. Back to being serious. Fiona's band really did wear dresses and were introduced as the "Spice Boys" The electric guitar came out after Love Me Just Leave Me Alone, and she used it for that song I'm not sure of and Dancing Barefoot. I don't prefer that stuff, but it was a nice change. She put her guitar down and moved around more. Her hips got into it for a little while there- I was like get down with your bad self Jewel. During You Were Meant For Me someone up front threw a rose and smacked her right in the face. From now on I think we need to reserve the front row for EDA security. We could have spiffy green shirts made up just like the "Safety Team" there. They should all be fired if you ask me for allowing Jewel to be impailed with thorns. But anyway, she paused for a second but kept going. At the end the person apoligized and she said "It's okay, I'm glad I'm not a girlfriend." She redirected her frustration at talkers (which quieted down fairly well) saying "If the person next to you is talking kick them in the teeth." Then she called down a Yodel-requester in the rear. Angel Standing by was lovely, and Amen was the strongest in memory. One good thing about this tour is due to her limited set her voice is the strongest I've heard. Amen was the closest to the album version (which I used to sit in my car and listen to for the tingles on my neck it gave me) I remember hitting the highs very nicely, with only a short inhale at the end on the long note. Her encore was planned since she finished right on time and the lights didn't come on beforehand. I liked that. Even if she didn't play Jessica, I still enjoyed the show. I printed off the lyrics for her and gave them to a member of the "Safety Team" stagefront to try and get them to her with my request. That woulda been neat to hear- even if the venue would most likely only support the fast version. Jewel was wearing strapped high heels with the thick heel, blue skirt to her knees, tight black top with black sweater over it. Her hair is light blond(as usual in the summer). And like WWSYS I expect YWMFM to disappear from the charts next week. When YWMFM was released to the radio stations about a month ago I was quite confident that it would do reasonably well. It seemed to be getting a fair amount of airplay. But in the last two weeks it appeared to have just vanished, I heard it played just once in this period. It also didn't help with the release being delayed by a week, as what little promotion it got, eg an HMV ad in NME and the VH1 appearances, were aimed at the earlier week. We can only hope it will be third time lucky with Foolish Games, but I think this is going to require a lot of effort from Jewel and her promotional team. If it is released at any other time than in the middle of Jewel's European tour then I'm sure it will, sadly, be another failure. I believe it's going to require some major prime-time TV performances from Jewel over here. Just thought you might be interested in reading an article in this week's San Diego Reader (a free, weekly events paper here in San Diego) about the Living Room Tour. This Tour is really gaining some publicity!! I hope one comes to this *tiny* little town! ;) Note that our very own LARRY is mentioned, although they forgot his last name, Kookybaka. Enjoy! Peace, -Erik >From the "San Diego Reader", july 31,1997 issue: ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- "It's semi-revolutionary!", says Cindy Lee Berryhill, describing her upcoming Living Room Tour with fellow San Diego tunesmith Elizabeth Hummel. The concept was born a few months ago, when a canceled show left Hummel and Berryhill stuck in Boston for a few days with nothing to do. Then, the Everyday Angels, an Internet discussion group dedicated primarily to Jewel, entered the picture. Inspired by the San Diego connection, members of the Everyday Angels had followed the Berryhill tour with interest. They stepped in to throw a house party for the temporarily displaced singer/songwriters. "Twenty people showed up on 24 hours' notice," recalls Berryhill. "Elizabeth and I just traded songs. I guess we played about 12 or 14 songs apiece. It was kind of nice, just sitting in a room playing for people." So nice, they decided to do it again. Larry, an Everyday Angel based in Los Angeles, helped organize a Living Room Tour. Members volunteered their homes and raised money to cover travel costs. Starting in New York City on August 1, the tour will hit domiciles in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Massachusetts, and Indiana. An outdoor date in Cape Cod has already sold out its 100 tickets. "The trade magazines keep talking about how shows aren't doing good right now," says Berryhill, "but it's not like people don't want to see music. With the Living Room Tour, there might be between 30 and 100 people per show." Berryhill points out, however, that some things about the concert business never change. "We're making T-shirts," she says. "They even say 'The Living Room Tour,' with the dates on the back, just like an Ozzy Osbourne tour." -D.W. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- >From NeOblCar@aol.com Mon Aug 4 23:14:00 1997 Date: Sun, 3 Aug 1997 20:26:54 -0400 (EDT) Subject: LRT - chat and happenings of the Aug. 2nd show OK -- I skipped posting about Bearsville because.... well, just because. But I could not resist telling at least some of the great times that happened at the August 2nd LRT at our house. Here are just some snippets of things that took place... * Chicken Caesar said sounded like a good thing to have at the time. * No, I don't know why Erica is not here, stop asking me * The ladies were 90 minutes late. It was worth the wait -- * Elizabeth is really really really really cool -- too much so for words * Cindy sleeps a lot and is a self-proclaimed light weight * Cindy played "Season of the Witch" and "Diane" for me :-) * Elizabeth likes candles at her performances * There were only 53 stains on my carpet * How many alcohol runs, did Richard (Akira) take -- 3 or 4? * Cindy absolutely rocks, she couldn't be a sweeter person either * The ladies spent the night -- which meant Dennis was kicked out of the "Harris Hotel" to make room * Umm --- who's on the front lawn? * We got to sing and some played rhythm for Cindy * We had Elizabeth and her Dulcimer "Unplugged" after the show on my back porch * Rach and Tom occupied the "balcony" seating? Hmm, didn't know we had such a thing. * "She won't even try, She won't even try, She won't even try, She won't even try, She won't even try, She won't even try, She won't even try, She won't even try" * "Pompeii, Pompeii, Pompeii, Pompeii, Pompeii, Pompeii" I leave the rest for others!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks for all that attended and contributed to the success of this stop of the tour!!!!! Tammy and I love you guys. Thanks to Dennis for his contributions for making it a great show --- everyone should go to his show next Sunday!!!!!!!! Most of all -- Thanks Cindy Lee and Elizabeth -- my god, how can I describe how wonderful you guys were. (I thought only our Thanksgivings were different!) Just so there's no confusion, I've been billing the Living Room Tour date of Elizabeth Hummel and Cindy Lee Berryhill on Salt Spring Island, Canada as being on the Labor Day weekend. Check your calendars! That's the Canadian Labor Day weekend starting August 29 1997. The LRT stops here on August 29 and Indian Summerstock takes place here on August 30 and 31. See all you EDAs here! RSVP to Adrian at howenow@imagen.net about your plans to attend this special event. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Date: Sat, 2 Aug 1997 09:37:09 -0700 Hi all: Three cheers for the Living Room Tour! A brilliant inspiration that had its genesis between Larry the loveable lawyer in L.A. and Chris Snyder and others in Boston. (I apologize if I haven't given credit to all the right people. Thank you all, and stand up and take a bow.) A concept that, through the energy and hard work of many EDAs, the artists and their management, has manifest itself in a wonderful tour that is awakening audiences to Cindy Lee Berryhill and Elizabeth Hummel -- at the same time it's inspiring other musicians and the media. Here's an update from the first Canadian site to be graced with the LRT. Cindy Lee and Elizabeth will be on Salt Spring Island to perform in an intimate island living room setting on Friday, August 29 1997. (That's the Labor Day holiday weekend in Canada.) They'll be staying on to perform as part of Indian Summerstock, a day long music fest here on Saturday, August 30. That same evening they'll catch a boat to sail to Seattle for their Bumbershoot Festival performance on Sunday August 31. There's a lineup building of cool artists who are coming to Salt Spring and will play for EDAs and other festival goers on Saturday after we bid a fond island farewell to Elizabeth and Cindy Lee. Ron Scott, one of Vancouver's most talented and tasteful guitarists has agreed to form a house band and back up any musicians who want accompaniment. He's bringing over a pedal steel guitar and other instruments to add to the musical mix. Jeffrey Hatcher, the lead guitarist with a Byrds-Beatle-esque sounding band, the Sugar Beats, is planning to make it -- he's waiting to talk to his travelling band members this week before we can confirm their appearance at Indian Summerstock. Jeff actually played on a bill in New York City with Cindy Lee some years ago, so here's hoping he can make the date again. Definitely confirmed for Indian Summerstock is the 50s jazz meets 60s garage rock combo, Ralph (). It's been said of Ralph "If you dig Chet Baker, Ray Davies, Cole Porter, Ramsey Lewis, Ella Fitzgerald, The Twist and The Pretty Things, you'll dig this!" Last summer Ralph co-billed with Laura Agnelli (of the Washington Squares) and Dave Rave (of legendary Canadian pop punksters, Teenage Head) on The Beatnik Folk Pop Explosion Tour which played CBGB's and other landmark spots. On vocals and goatee, the band's lead singer, also named Ralph, is a poet whose beat 'zine is carried in San Francisco's City Lights Bookstore. The Allen Ginsberg Foundation maintains a link to Ralph's web-page. Several other musicians will be confirming their appearances at Indian Summerstock in the next few days. For EDAs, it promises to be a very cool weekend. The LRT show will be in my living room. Natch! Indian Summerstock will happen on acres of land owned by the local Farmer's Institute. If the weather's dry we'll hear the music in the orchard. If it rains we'll move into a barn and set up a stage and seats on bales of hay. There's going to be a giant barbecue and a farmer's goods and services auction on the site as well. So, if you want to experience country living and great music among friends, we'll see you here. Please RSVP to Adrian at howenow@imagen.net with your plans (and to get travel directions!) -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- From: Ricka001@aol.com Date: 97-08-04 16:28:30 EDT Subj: SJC: Attn SoCal EDAs EDAs in Southern California: Following the East Coast Living Room Tours, both Elizabeth Hummel and Cindy Lee Berryhill have shows scheduled in LA and, of course, would love to see EDAs there. The beginning. wake up. Call Abel (the quiet angel) and ask him if he has decided to come with us... unfortunatly for us and him he was sick (awww poor little guy ;) John ("thats with an H") hickey, Aka shallowend comes to pick me up right on time (EDA.. on time... never thought i'd hear THAT in one sentence ;). i search around my house for any forgotten items. i decided to pass on the extra set of clothes because stupid me thinks i'm not going to stay overnight at tammy and robs house (why havent i learned my lesson by now??) We leave, hit the road.get to tammys after about an hour of driving. We pass Cindy street and elizabethtown and declare that it MUST be a sign.we get to tammys... We see rob already getting the alcoholic beverages ready for mass consumption. We eat ("humus? whats that?"). We laugh. We play Connect four ("harvard vs. F.U. this will be quite a match") We drink (Katherine: "Wow, have you become legal since we last saw you in march?") Tammys sister shows up ("Hi tammys sister!"-everyone) We play bacci ball (I WON!! TEAM HARRIS LOST, I WON. I RULE. YOU DONT ;) I have officially assigned Dennis to take my place in the bacci ball world champion game at the LRT in cape cod. Cindy, Elizabeth and Jared show up ("Theyre 3 hours late... Jared must have been driving" :) the girls get settled and have a little dinner. people flock around elizabeth (who is seriously one of the sweetest people i have ever met). While they are eating we do a soundcheck with lauren bond on vocals and someone (chris?) on guitar. The show: Elizabeth played first tonight (they alternate nights). she was awesome... The connection this girl has with her audience is astounding. her intimacy factor is way up there and is what i imagine jewel must have been like before the fame. Elizabeth will look you right in the eye when shes playing, its incredible. She played "Goodwill store" which is, as she calls it, her "Famous EDA song". because it was written about Jewel and steve. she took requests, i asked for "the sun went splat (aka the condom song)" and someone else asked for "tornado" (she took my request but played tornado sometime later that night.) She was wearing Jeans with cutoff frilly bottoms, a black tank top and she was bearfoot, i'd like to state right now that both of these women are incredibly gorgeous. We found out that she has a prefferance for candles at her concerts (good call rob), I was front row, about 3 feet from the girls as they were singing. it was perfect. We took a short bathroom break after the first set. we found the wine. we talked with cindy in the kitchen (Rob... or was it dennis?: "Dont frighten the artists") and then we all took our seats. Cindys set included some very intertesting instruments, toy pianos, casio pianos, Bongos, toy percussion instruments (we'll get to that later), and can i now officially concider Cindys hair to be a part of her live show? she really gets that grooving. Shes a great dancer too... she took full use of the "campbell and crashboy made starrynight curtain" there was a red light behind the curtain, and the regular house lights were turned off. Cindy jumped bnehind teh curtain during a song that i am not remembering at this moment. she did this sorta strip dance for us, it was cute, then she came out from behind the curtain (she was giggling) and started to dance around the limited area that was her stage, she danced over to the candy dish and did a dramatic swoop to pick out a hersheys kiss, and then gave it to me (highlight of the night #1). when cindys set was done we took yet another break, by this time i was a bit inebriated, so i being oh-so-smart took a vivarin which i brought with me... hmm... Alchohol=Sedative Vivarin= Stimulant.... It'll all balance itself out, right? ;) The set of cindy and elizabeth together started and i was feeling better, if not much more awake. I must say that as amazing as these two girls are alone, their emotion, energry, intimacy, and power are only strengthend and extra reinforced when they are together, they seem to feed from each other. looking at each other, and giving signals, it was very awesome. you can tell these girls are best friends, at one point Elizabeth was standing and singing and cindy was sitting down doing harmonies, elizabeth bend down and kissed cindy, i think the whole audience went "awwww". Cindy tells amazing stories, her favorites are from her highschool band "The Stoopuds", she tells the story of a young girl, Diane, who used to be a young man named Glen (this is an amazing song, lyrically and musically, definetly one of my favorites next to cindys "season of the witch") Cindy told a story about her 6th grade band, it was an all girl band, and none of them except cindy knew how to play an instrument, so she had them all play percussion instruments, then she handed out some toy percussion instruments to the 4 girls in the front row (Me, laura marion, Linda and... mitch, he was an honorary girl for that day. i played rattle) she showed us the beat. we played the beat, sorta. we chanted "Bombay" (or was it pompeii like rob said?) They sang a song that cindy wrote over an old skip in a beach boys album "She wont even try, she wont even try, she wont even try...." When it was over i was very pumped up, i asked rob if we could take the Living room tour posters from the wall (they are awesome by the way). I got out my black rollerball pen (which i have grown very attached to) and asked elizabeth to sign my poster, she did, i had to spell my name out for her of course but thats okay... then i let her use my pen to sign everyone elses stuff. later elizabeth gave an "unplugged" concert with her dulcimer on tammys porch (25 people, one small porch. lets do the math...) (did anyone get that on tape???) i walked back and forth from the living roomw here cindy was sitting, to the porch where elizabeth was playing. cindy is really awesome... she signed stuff for like 2 hours. They went to bed after about 2am, dave, linda, rich and i were still playing hackeysack in the living room ("i'm such a hackeysack virgin"). we nearly killed eric a few times with my lethal kickball stratagies. dave decided that i deserved teh nickname "giggles". everyone settled down and decided to sleep except for a select few (linda, dave and i) since i was still under the influence of a vivarin (the alchohol had worn off rather quickly somehow) we went outside to play a nice game of 3am badmitton. with no net... and no light. we then discovered the garage light... linda and dave sang me what felt like the entire Rocky horror picture show... we sang abit out there (linda and I:"You paralyzed my mind, and for that you suck"... dave: "wow, that made total sense" me:) the other two deicded that it wasnt worth getting bit by bugs and freezing so we went inside. Bill Stripped down to his bare boxers, with the open fly, and gave some of the girls massages. after everyone decided that there was no way to shut us up they all proceeded tyo teh living room, leaving dave, linda and i with "the worm" couch... the most comfortable piece of furniture this side of the planet. We all curled up in it and I tried to keep them from falling asleep. we threw blueberried into each others mouths and when dave pretended to drift off he left his mouth open... and how could i resist putting a hot tamale candy in his mouth (hehe) linda and i talked all night. it was pretty cool... then we found a POY songbook, and in a moment of complete insanity actually thought it would be a Good idea to sing... at 5am!!! ( we woke up every EDA in the room next to ours... i'm sorry guys) and i later found out that we kept cindy awake... (i felt horrible about this) after awhile we got restless and stsrted watching people sleep, that was fun. steve woke up and got cranky with me, so i went to sleep, but not for long. when i woke up, like an hour later i found linda to be asleep, but most eveyrone else in the house, excluding cindy and elizabeth to be awake. at 11am i called my dad and asked permission to go to pennsylvania for selenas LRT (he said yes, the show was amazing, but i'm not going to post on it) at about 11:40 i decided that it was time for linda to wake up. so i went in to where she was sleeping and started brushing her hair, shes got very soft hair, and she woke up finally, after about 10 minutes of brushing. tammy got into the kitchen and started making her 10 foot stacks of pancakes. and we all settled down to watch fiona apple unplugged (Laura: "Damn shes so HOT!"). I went online with elizabeth hummel behind me. i asked her if she knew what that "red bone" thing was about and she was just as clueless about it as the rest of us. Have i mentioned just how much elizabeth rocks?? she discovered the kittens in the closet and then interviewed a few of the girls for an article shes writing about the LRT for Slamm magazine in San diego. (Katerina (campell child #2): "I like my jewelery, and ice cream, and my dolls.... and money") we all got ready to go either home, or on to pennsylvania. i rode with paul who introduced me to the music of Moonpools and caterpillars. we listened to Cindys rare "Naked movie star" album, which was made famous the night before ("Woah, Pornos!!!") we stopped at a rest stop to get a skinny wiener for rich . we got to Selenas friends house right after selena and tom arrived. and discovered the TRAMPOLINE in the backyard. This is gonna be the end of my post, because i dont think i could say anything about cindy and elizabeth that i havent already said. except that tonight Elizabeth was still bearfoot and wearing a short black summer dress that looked astounding on her. and cindy had on cute frilly little girl socks. here are some fun facts about LRT, Quotes, people and anything related: "Oh my god!!! youre so cute!!!!" I have noticed that many men were attracted to carter last night ;) Dennis:"Its easier to get forgivness than it is to get permission" (I love that dennis!!!) Cindy and elizabeth were on the trampoline with us Elizabeth gave me a hug in the kitchen, she smells like Lemon. I think i freaked quite a few people out thats all i think. sorry for the long post, but i know people get annoyed when i do multiparters (but hey ast least i didnt do an "Alphabet string post") Thirza "The punky kid"-(thanks chris) -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- >From Horter3@aol.com Mon Aug 4 23:15:12 1997 Date: Mon, 4 Aug 1997 20:08:04 -0400 (EDT) From: Horter3@aol.com Subject: Selena's LRT IT ROCKED!!!!! LRT show!! Again, this one was great, too! It was outdoors, and they had couches and chairs, and carpets out on the ground, and candles all around--very cool set. There was a trampoline that made friends with Steve :) and there was a hammock out in the trees--very comfy! Even the cats had their own house--I'm not joking! Everything about this place was cool! EH and CLB got there and started on time, I think--it was a great show, but Cindy didn't do the skip song :( I was looking forward to that! But it didn't matter--they were just there as good there as they were at Rob and Tammy's! When it came time to hand out instruments for people in the audience to play, Tom Proven got a drum of some sort. They were like "Ok, play this kind of a beat" and Tom's like "ok, sure"--well, that lasted for a little bit, and then Tom just busted out with his own thing!!! It was great!! He even got a solo! WOOHOO TOM!! EH and CLB had to leave right after their show--they had to drive 500 miles to the next one in Cincinatti! And I guess they weren't sure about the area and wanted someone to show them the way to the highway, so Mark and I drove them out to Rt. 30 so they could find there way out of there! They were so funny :) Afterwards, a bunch of us went to eat at Dempsey's Diner--for some of them, it was their first experience with Scrapple, and after they found out exactly what it is, they didn't want to taste it! And Jon kept us laughing, as always ;-) Then we departed and went our separate ways...all I have to say is that I can't wait for the Cape Cod show!!!!!!!!!!! Jewel's contribution to the cause was discussed in the following excerpt: Kaplan said that putting together MOM II was fun as well as rewarding because the artists really cared about the project. "A lot of these artists surf, are ocean nuts, and so it was really neat working with them," Kaplan said. "Like Jewel. She not only gave a new song for the album, but it's something she passionately believes in. And she surfs so we had a chance to go surfing and get to know her a little bit better. It's not just like 'Here's a track,' but it's something she deeply believes in. She's a really spiritual person and it's neat to get to see that side of some of these people." The venue was sold out, which doesnt happen that often! Unfortunately, I was had a lawn seat, but a really nice girl in front of me let me borrow her binoculars during Near You Always, Foolish Games, and Don't. Lisa Loeb commnted that this was the largest crowd that they had so far (I'm sure that she says that to everyone) She did very well, but everyone was itching to hear Sarah, Jewel, and the Indigo Girls play. (p.s. by the way, the weather was drizzly, cool, and overcast, not a typical summer night) Jewel started singing from offstage as she did in Indy (I guess) and did a wonderful job. She alternated between singing without the band and jamming with them. I was very impressed by her jazzy approach to a few songs.... she started skatting and at the end of her set she yodeled for us! Her set included Down, Dont, Near You Always, WWSYS, Foolish Games, Chime Bells, and I cant remember the rest. I was so happy to see Jewel and Sarah in the same night that I cried. I started listening to Sarah about 5-6 years ago, and was turned on to Jewel because I heard someone make the comparison between the two. They both have ethereal angelic voices. Sarah's set was amazing as well. At the end of the Indigo Girls' set, Sarah came out to sing with them, then Jewel joined in, then Lisa Loeb, and Emmylou Harris, came out to join in on Closer I am to Flyin ( I think that is the name of the song.... I must confess, I am not that familiar with the Indigo Girls). It was a great ending to a great show! P.S. I did pick up a Jewel book for Greg, but as a warning to future Lilith Fair goers, the books were difficult to find because they werent displayed. I found them with the LF T-shirts. So, first I'm going to give the set list, and THEN I'm going to cast about for different ways to say "really, really good" ;). Summertime Near You Always (Never Trust Your Pink Fleshy Heart to a) Carnivore Morning Song Been Down So Long Love Me Just Leave Me Alone ? (I didn't know this one----does anybody? it was very up-tempo and rocked-out) WWSYS Don't YWMFM Foolish Games Angel Standing By Chime Bells (1st verse then yodel to the end) (I really wish she would've played Deep Water, SiBtW or Race Car Driver...but oh well, gues I'll just have to go see her again sometime, ;) ) She only told one story, but it was a good one. She said back when she was living in her van, and she first found out that a record label was going to hear her play at a coffehouse, she decided she wanted to have clean hair, so she went and washed it at Denny's. Just as she was finishing, and had started to dry it with a paper towel, she noticed two little blue-haired ladies, pressed against the wall. As she was leaving, embarassed, she heard one say "Well, she looked like a pretty enough girl; wonder how she ended up like that?" So...then Jewel looks mischievously at the audience, raises her middle finger and smiles sweetly as she says, "Well, this is for them." Yet, the funniest moment was when, during morning song, she said "I wanna give you some moooore"--she had the sexiest little come-hither look on her face, and she waggled her eyebrows...it was fantastic. But the best part was hearing her do "Angel Standing By." It was too beautiful for words; I cried, and through my tears, looked down on the Amphitheater (I was WAY in the back of the lawn) and saw a few dozen people holding lighters. Normally, that looks all cheesy, and the flames are swaying, but everything was perfectly still, and the flames came out one by one....it was like watching dusk fall and seeing the stars come out. It seemed the perfect tribute for Our Angel. Then, in the encore for the show, she joined Lisa Loeb and Sarah with Indigo girls (who SOOOOO rocked) in "Closer to Fine." Evidently, Jewel has been studying those lyrics, cause she was right on. In all, the show was wonderful. Wish I could've met up with some other EDAs but I didn't plan anything. Oh well, SiBtW. =) (\/) \/, Erin P.S. Thanks to everyone who read this far. I'm doing just fine & have had an unbelievable time lately & am loving every minute of it! :-) I'm sure you'll hear much more about the final Living Room Tour gigs from the attendees, but I want to say it's been an experience I'll never forget. The shows were incredible, but they were just icing on one delicious cake of a weekend. Thanks to all who came to the Cape & Raynham!! I love you guys & I only wish I could float in the bay with Liz, Cindy Lee & Elizabeth every weekend! Other than important stuff like these tour dates, I'll continue to be sending things to the newslist. Although it may look like it, I had no influence over all the schedule changes winding up here in CT & surrounding areas. ;-) I'll see many of you New England friends on the tour. Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk content-length: 6022 Hey Everyone! I just got back from the Pittsburgh Lilith Fair. I had the BEST time. It was such an experience for me, one like I have never experienced before. (that all happened during Jewel's set though). Anyways, to tell my story of the day. Bill (rael@surfnetwork.com) called me at like noon to tell me he had made it to Cranberry. So, I went to meet him and he followed me back to my house. We left almost right away...after my mom and I ran around the house looking for everything we had realized we forgot to get ready. Finally, we got to Eat N' Park where we THOUGHT we were going to meet up with some of the other EDA's. It didn't happen that way. My mom, Bill and I ate by ourselves and HOPED that some others would show up, but they didn't. That was all good though, cause we had a good time anyways. We got to the show and saw Patty Griffin almost as soon as we got there. After her short set, I went to get her autograph and I asked her if she knew of any way that I could get something to Jewel. I showed her the box that I had with the 130 EDA picks for her in and everyone that was there was like "OOOHHHH...". This guy was standing next to her and he was like "I'll ask her road manager about getting you backstage." Then I talked to him and gave him my name and stuff. He said to meet him at the second stage at 5:00pm where Patty would be playing again. We were supposed to meet up with EDA's at 4:00 at the village stage, but that didn't happen either. Bill was wearing his EDA shirt, so we figured that we wouldn't be TOO hard to spot. We walked around and my mom and I drug Bill to all the little shops while I tried on dresses and stuff. Then we went over to see Patty again. After her show, the guy grabbed me and was like "haven't talked to him yet, wait here". Then he left and came back like five minutes later. He told me to wait outside of the backstage doors and he'd be right back. While we were waiting, Bill showed up with Ashley (kisses from jewelbug) and her friend Rachel. I was pretty excited to at least get to meet up with her. I knew how excited she was to be there, since it was her first time seeing Jewel too. The guy came back, but didn't have good news. Jewel seemed to be lost or something. He said that he talked to her road manager and that he didn't even know where she was at. That sometimes she is all over the place at shows and others she can't be found..like today. So, he gave me his card (his name was Michael Baker) and took my phone number. He took the picks and said that he would do his best to give them to her directly because he said that if anyone in her crew got it that she may not get them right away. So, he said he would either meet me back at that place right after Sarah McLachlan or he would call me and leave a message on my machine. We went back after Sarah and he wasn't there. So, we went back to the grass to watch Jewel. Bill and Ashley went to Bill's seats to watch the show and me and Rachel joined my mom back on the grass. Jewel came on and I just got chills all through me. It was just SO wonderful, I didn't expect to feel that way about it since I have been to so many concerts. Jewel just effects me differently though, I guess. They had these screens on the roof that covers some of the seats, so we kept watching them trying to see her picks. We saw them SO many times...I KNOW that they were OUR EDA picks! They were the pale yellow, just like ours. We saw that on one side they had a design....then they showed her from the other side and we saw that they were designed on both sides. So, I KNEW that they were ours. Cause how many pale yellow picks does she use that have stuff on both sides? Plus, you could tell that there was writing on one side and a picture on the other. Her set went like this: Summertime Near You Always Satellite Morning Song Down Love Me Just Leave Me Alone Dancing Barefoot WWSYS YWMFM Foolish Games Angel Standing By We were waiting for the rain to come all night and during Foolish Games, it did. A HORRIBLE rainstorm broke out. Everyone was covering up, but I just stood in it and let it soak me. When she sang the "stood in the rain" part...everyone cheered and then the lightning started. It was an incrediable set and I just loved every second of it (even when my eyes where stinging so bad from the hair spray that was running in them). After her set, we caught up with Ashley and Bill and said goodbye to Ash and Rachel. We sat in my mom's car soaked to the bone for the 45 minute trip home (that I turned into over an hour because I HAD to use the facilities in Dairy Queen). So, we get home finally and it's time to say goodbye to Bill who is off for Scranton to see her again tommorrow. (Thanks SO much for my first angelfood Bill!! I'm listening to it right now!!!) When I got in the door, I ran to the answering machine. The first message was from Michael Baker!! He gave the picks DIRECTLY to Jewel. He said he explained the whole story to her and made sure she saw the letter that I put in there too. So, now I have NO doubt in my mind that those were our picks! I wish I could have given them to her myself, but I think that this was the best I could do. I wanted her to have them for the show I was going to be at and she did and she used them...so that makes me VERY happy tonight. I'm going to call Michael tommorrow and thank him for everything he did for me. Well, sorry that this got so long...but, I wanted to end the saga of the guitar picks and let everyone know that Jewel got them and apparently likes them. So, whoever is going to shows in the future....check it out and see if she's using ours! I Love All you guys! And VERY big thanks to everyone who helped me with the guitar picks..your work has not gone unrecognized, I included the names of all those who contributed in the letter that I gave to her. For those of you planning to come to Toronto Thursday, the day before Lilith, here are the plans for the Holly McNarland show Thursday evening: I will be meeting Steve Ito, Gian Covello and anyone else who can make it at The Horseshoe club after 6pm. The club is essentially in the downtown area, at 368 Queen St. West, corner of Spadina. It is easily accessible by public transit, both the Queen and Spadina streetcar lines stop there, and those hook up with the subway. The Horseshoe is a relatively small tavern, that is split into a little front room, and a back room which is where the bands play. The doors to the back don't open until 9pm, but you can get into the front (until it fills up of course) before that. There is a real buzz going on here about Holly right now, she has a big Canadian radio hit and a video on muchMusic, so we're expecting it may sell out early. The show is only $6 Canadian, no advance tickets as far as I know. (compare that to $25 for cajun musician Buckwheat Zydeco the night before!!) The show is 19 & over. If the place is dead at 6:30 or so, we'll walk across the road to a Mexican restaurant called Tortilla Flats for a bite to eat. If it's filling up, we'll stay there and stake out our place in line, so come join us. I will wear a dark green t-shirt with a big white Texas Longhorn emblem on the front. Gian will have a fashionable NIN T-shirt on. If you're on the fence about coming out to this, get off it now! Holly has an EP and a new CD that both kick serious ass, and her live performance is a pure adrenaline rush. The little Horseshoe is going to be an awesome place to see this. 21-year-old Holly has a sweet, pretty voice with fabulous range, and her music is incredibly melodic and powerful. Some of her lyrics tend to be quite dark and the contrast between her delivery and the content is spectacular. FRIDAY AND SATURDAY: Everyone be sure to get to the Lilith shows EARLY. The shows *officially* start (and they are VERY punctual) at 4pm if not before, and the first artist up is Emm Gryner, another must-see, in the Village Acoustic area. Often main stage acts will put on a surprise performance on the INTIMATE village acoustic stage as early as 3:30pm. Steve Ito had the unfortune to miss Camille Henderson play the Village Acoustic stage at Canandaigua. Other main stage performers to put in surprise appearances have been Sarah McLachlan, Paula Cole, and Mary Chapin Carpenter to name a few. Factor in a LONG LONG wait to: a) drive in through a traffic jam b) park c) actually enter the venue (security and so on) last time it took like an hour longer than I expected Steve Ito says bring lawn chairs for the post-show tailgate party while we wait for the masses to leave! Some of us on irc have decided a good meeting place for the EDAs is the Nettwerk Records booth in the village concession area, between sets during the afternoon. I suggest you visit the Lilith website if you haven't already done so, for all the official details. http://www.lilithfair.com MONDAY! Thinking of staying in Toronto for an extra couple of days? Jewel will perform a live Intimate and Interactive special on Monday evening at 9pm at the MuchMusic studios, 299 Queen St. West (just east of the Horseshoe). These specials are generally held in a 'studio' area that is open to the outdoors, so even if you can't get into the building, it's easy enough to join the crowd on the sidewalk/street outside and watch it happen. Often the VJs will walk out into the crowd outside and take questions for Jewel from the audience. If you want to try to weasel your way in, why not try calling MuchMusic at 416-591-5757 and ask (maybe tell them you're a member of the internet fan club or whatever), the worst they can do is say no! I think that's it for tonight. Hope to see many of you at the shows! We'll be watching for blue ribbons and Jewelstock & EDA T's! Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk content-length: 3261 Hey Angels!!!! Right now I'm just too tired after a weekend of canoeing and yesterday's August 12 Pittsburgh/Burgettstown Lilith Fair concert to file a detailed report, but, just briefly for any of you going to the Scranton show today (Aug. 13), you oughta know... IT WAS AWESOME!!!!!!! SHE DID A GREAT JOB!!!!!!!!! The set was kind of neatly divided into three little sets, "Summertime"/"Near You Always"/"Satellite"/ "Morning Song"; "Love Me Just Leave Me Alone"/"Dancing Barefoot"/+ one other electric guitar song (I have no Angelfood and am not well-versed in her not-yet-released songs); and "WWSYS"/"YWMFM"/"FG"; followed by "Angel Standing By" to wrap it all up... ...and all of them worked!!!!! Worked REAL WELL!!!! It was just a REALLY GOOD SHOW that hopefully is very typical of the performances that she's been giving!!!!! The "divisions" of her set are not formal constructs, but were just easy ways of marking the transition from her slower, softer songs (the first four listed above), to the point where she picked up her electric guitar, did three songs with that AND REALLY ROCKED OUT IN SO DOING (she should be proud of the way that she plays electric, it went very well, went over very well, and got good reviews), and then, going back to acoustic, ending with very good performances of the songs that she's expected to play everywhere (not that there's anything wrong with that!), WWSYS, YWMFM, and Foolish Games. "Angel Standing By" was about the best way to end a set that was entirely too short (...as were most of the sets at Lilith Fair, but I guess that that's to be expected what with all of that talent and so little time)--almost like an encore without it being an encore (I guess most EDAs are familiar with that song--it's a great ending). All in all, everything in Jewel's performance went very well (as did all of the others, as a matter of fact:) ). Jewel was not through for the evening after her set, for the record and in case anyone is going "only" to see her. The very last act was Indigo Girls, who sang some of their songs (obviously) and then invited all of the other performers to join in with them on their song "Closer To Fine". Jewel sang one verse there and yodeled another, and that went very well too :) Like I said earlier, I don't have the time or energy right now to go into greater detail--maybe I will in another day or so :) Not even the massive downpour that happened right in the middle of Jewel's set, which blew in and soaked even those of us who were under the pavilion, could take away from the truly great job that she (and the others) did last night. In fact, the gods of lightning and goddesses of thunder themselves must have been watching Jewel with approval--in the song "Foolish Games", at the exact point where she sings "You took your coat off/And stood in the rain", at that exact point, is when it started to rain in on all of us!!!!! :) I heartily suggest going to the Lilith Fair, getting there early, and enjoying it if you haven't already gone and are still thinking of doing so :) HEY JEWEL, THANKS--YOU AND ALL THE OTHERS PUT ON A GREAT SHOW!!!!! Well, they finally had an update in today's paper about a 'Live' Lilith CD (more on this in a separate post) and the almost week-late review of Jewel (condensed at that). This critic's name is Diana Penner and this is what she had to say: "Sorry, Jewel fans: Technical difficulties and time and space constraints prevented a review of her solo performance. Here's a condensed version: Jewel broke abruptly from the festival's largely organic mood, sauntering out in a slinky red dress and heels, crooning Gershwin's 'Summertime'. It was the highlight of her set, which otherwise featured pleasant pop-rock long on catchiness but short on depth. If I'd had my druthers, the legendary Emmylou Harris, whose repertoire encompasses more years than Jewel has lived, would have preceded Jewel and been allocated 50 minutes with just 35 for Jewel." Unless I was dreaming Emmylou DID precede Jewel. She tied for the lowest ratings among the performers reviewed. Sarah, The Indigo Girls and Emmylou Harris got four stars out of four. Lisa Loeb 3.5 stars, Kelly Willis 3 stars, Mary Black and Jewel 2.5 stars. Send this critic to the outhouse....judging by the crowd reaction there's no doubt who deserved the 50 minutes and four stars. -Tom From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Thu Aug 14 20:12:38 1997 Return-Path: Received: by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4-jewelq-jane) id UAA28762; Thu, 14 Aug 1997 20:10:23 -0400 Message-Id: <199708150010.UAA28762@jane.smoe.org> Date: Thu, 14 Aug 1997 18:05:37 -0500 From: twh662@juno.com (T H) To: jewel-news@smoe.org Subject: Jewel News: 'Live' Lilith fair CD in the works and next year Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk content-length: 1132 I don't know if this is old news or not, but here's some excerpts from today's paper: Speaking with reporters before Friday's (Indy) show, Sarah McLachlan, Lilith Fair-y godmother and consistent headliner of the festival tour, said an album of selected performances from the tour may be available by Christmas. She'll be seeking permission from individual artists' labels and choose which recordings to include. Sarah suggested there's enough for "one or more CD's." About next year, Sarah's building a base (of sponsors) for next year's tour, thanks to this summer's success. Speaking of next year, McLachlan again was asked about adding male artists. "I'm kind of wishy-washy about it," she confessed. Sometimes she wants to, but then she starts thinking about just how well things are going without them. She got a kick out of hearing that Beck would like to play Lilith. "That's really a nice feeling, to hear other artists say they want to be a part of this, " she said. I say keep it just lead female artists...it keeps it unique, not to mention attendance exceeded anything the critics thought.. -Tom From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Fri Aug 15 19:52:54 1997 Return-Path: Received: by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4-jewelq-jane) id TAA16894; Fri, 15 Aug 1997 19:48:57 -0400 Message-Id: <199708152348.TAA16894@jane.smoe.org> Date: Fri, 15 Aug 1997 18:29:10 -0400 From: AnimalGrrl@aol.com To: jewel-news@smoe.org Subject: Jewel News: Nashville Lilith Fair 8/6 Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk content-length: 1685 I kept expecting someone to post Jewel's set list for the Nashville show, but no one did, so I thought I would. I thought she played an okay show. I mean any Jewel is great but I saw her last August in a small club and she was positively amazing. This show paled in comparison. As a singer she was excellent but as an entertainer she was only average. There wasn't that special Jewel quality that most of her shows have. When I saw her last year it was like she singled out every person in the club and was playing just for them. It was such a personal experience, distinct from every show I'd ever seen. At this show she didn't tell any stories, only an abrubt version of her usual little spiel about doing what she loves. The first time I saw her she told so many stories. She'd start to play a song and everyone would get excited and then she'd stop right before she'd be about to sing and tell a story or a joke; she had the audience laughing hysterically. The energy was amazing. She can play an audience very well. Overall Lilith Fair was a great experience. My expectations for Jewel were very high so I was a bit dissappointed but it was still great. (For you new folk, an explanation follows below) Quick explanation for the REALLY, REALLY new. EDA stands for EveryDay Angels...EDAs are members of this mailing list....Jewel herself dubbed us as EveryDay Angels :) We are going to wait until mid to late September before we launch the next order of picks so that the college folks get a chance. They were in school last April and May when this idea was born and were out of school (no more email for many) and it's only fair to let them in on it this time. We *will* make provisions for bulk orders too (some folk wanted 50 to 100 themselves), details on that will be announced when we launch the next order. Our plans are to order enough as to not have the quick sellout as before, and to again supply Jewel with a batch of them :) SPECIAL NOTE TO KRIS KANES' CUSTOMERS FROM THE FIRST ORDER: Kris IS going to get replacements NOW for the 100 picks he lost and he will contact you folk privately soon :) To see what the EDA Guitar Picks look like, check out: http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup/edapicks.jpg (note the actual picks differ slighly than as depicted on the above jpg. The desciption below is correct) THE STORY BEHIND THE PICKS: In early to mid-April, talk of what the list could give Jewel for her birthday surfaced, and MANY ideas came up. Two basically came to be. One was the actual star that was named for Jewel. (more on that later) The other was this EDA guitar pick thing. The idea was to make some guitar picks for Jewel, and to sell some to the EDAs. It was hoped to get them to Jewel by her birthday, but due to Murphy's Law, it was not to be. THE BRAND/TYPE OF PICK: The picks made are D'Adario brand, in the medium gauge. They are a pale yellow in color. On one side there is what we call the 'smoo' angel, and on the otherside, it says "We Are EveryDay Angels" and it has an 'illuminated' halo below the print. Both designs are by Dennis Harris. We consulted people in the Jewel camp on pick preferences, and we got these to match one of the styles of picks Jewel uses. We ordered 720 of them, 120 for Jewel as a present from the EDAs, 600 to sell to the EDAs. (They sold out in 36 hours!!) JEWEL'S OTHER EDA GIFT, THE STAR: In a nutshell, the EDAs also gave Jewel a real star for her birthday. Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk content-length: 1963 The Georgia Straight, the top arts and entertainment weekly in Vancouver, Canada has just published the following article that mentions Jewel, the EDAs, Cindy Lee and Elizabeth and the Living Room Tours! SMALL-SCALE TOURING Long before she scored a platinum record, folk artist Jewel toured relentlessly, hanging out with fans and slowly building a following. Inspired by the singer-songwriter, folk artists and their fans are taking that grassroots approach one step further with the Living Room Tour. The idea is simple -- fans arrange private concerts in their living rooms and invited artists show up and play. The concept started in Boston earlier this year when San Diego-based songwriters Cindy Lee Berryhill and Elizabeth Hummel were asked by members of a Jewel Internet fan club called the Everyday Angels (EDAs) if they would do a small show in between gigs. The two played a four-hour private concert at a Boston house. Things went so well that the Living Room tour is now including stops around North America. On August 29, Salt Spring Island resident Adrian du Plessis will welcome Hummel and Berryhill into his living room. Everyday Angels from as far away as California will be making the trek to B.C. for the concert. "We'll probably have about half EDAs, and some people from the island here," du Plessis told the Straight. "It's not something you sell tickets to -- if there's more than 40 people, they are going to end up being pushed out of the house." For those who won't fit into his living room, du Plessis is also organizing an August 30 all-day concert on Salt Spring on the grounds of the Farmer's Institute, a section of the island set aside to ensure the continued existence of rural life. For more information on the concert which will feature Berryhill, Hummel, Vancouver's Ralph Alfonso and Salt Spring's Lisa Maxx, e-mail du Plessis at howenow@imagen.net by Mike Usinger, The Georgia Straight, August 14 1997 From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Sat Aug 16 15:12:55 1997 Return-Path: Received: by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4-jewelq-jane) id OAA02532; Sat, 16 Aug 1997 14:58:43 -0400 Message-Id: <199708161858.OAA02532@jane.smoe.org> Date: Fri, 15 Aug 1997 16:28:11 From: joedeleon@usa.net To: jewel-news@smoe.org Subject: Jewel News: MTVAsia: Jewel Live and Intimate; LJC: Personals Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk content-length: 2232 Dear Angels, News Highlights from the sunnier side of the globe. After work I was able to record the Jewel Live and Intimate (10 pm Philippine Time; that's about 9am Canada time). She was incredibly sweet and looked a little sleepy. Even if she had not slept she gave incredible performances and honest, dare I say it, inspiring answers. Jewel performed a few songs: 1. Near You Always 2. WWSYS 3. YWMFM 4. Angels Standing By 5. Foolish Games In between she answered a few questions fielded by members of the Singaporean press. Jewel picked the winner for a Planet Hollywood Singapore Contest. Highlights of the interview: Jewel handled the press quite well. Unfortunately these media people were a little shy at first. Jewel's answers tended to be shorter than these people were used to. She was very nice to them and answered most queries, except one on "foot massages" (she begged off quite charmingly). Some questions were insightful (some were not)and Jewel's responses were consistently intelligent, honest and often wise. Upon request, and a "I don't really understand why people love this so much," she yodeled for Asia. About Love- She admitted that she has a boyfriend(Michel, a French Canadian). They've been together about two years. About the movies- She likes doing soundtracks because she can take a moral perspective other than her own. She also did a screen test for the female lead in a future movie project set in the past. About touring- JEWEL IS COMING TO ASIA IN OCTOBER!! End of News Flash. Into the Personals... Any EDAs that want a VHS tape of this performance, it's about 45 mins. long, e-mail me privately and we'll figure something out. If you wait till Monday, I'll probably have the MTV Unplugged ready too. Request to all EDAs, please pray that Jewel comes by the Philippines. Even if she tours Asia, I am worried that she might skip my poor country for the bigger markets like Singapore. So I need positive energy here (and anybody who could put in a good word to Jewel's management =P). Ooops, took a little longer than I thought. Peace and Prayers to all of you. Pieces of Me (sic) never really crossed into the international market, so the only songs I knew in advance of the show were the radio singles, notably the truly brilliant "You Were Meant for Me." Jewel's strength as a concert performer rests on her subtle guitar work and her songwriting, but above all else on her remarkable, liquid voice, which ripples and builds before swelling to a crest. On "Who Will Save Your Soul" Jewel showed that she has vocal prowess to carry an occasionally clumsy lyric. Her vocal style is a peculiar cross between the lushness of a torch singer's - -- toward which Jewel clearly has aspirations -- and the urgency of a modern singer/songwriter. And, of course, she can yodel like nobody's business. Dressed in a classy red dress, Jewel emanated style and stage experience that belied her youth. She will clearly be with us for some time. - ------- Nice to hear from one not already enamored by Jewel. Ok, here's the deal -- there are a number of EDA's that will be attending the show, so of course we all have to get together!!!! Once again Tammy and I are inviting attending EDAs to our house for a pre-show BBQ. We live about 10 miles (20 minutes) from the venue, so it's a short drive. However, this gathering will not be of the magnitude that our past events have been, there are a few unusual rules -- (1) Please no "pre-cleared" non-EDA guests -- please (2) We are having a "potluck" BBQ -- which means you really should bring something. A&P is right down the corner if you just want to buy something. (3) This is not a normal gathering, so don't expect alot -- it is just a bunch of friends getting together before a show. Schedule of events: 2:00pm -- Gather at our house and fire up the BBQ 6:00pm -- Lawn seat people should make their way to the venue, I will probably follow shortly after 8:00pm -- show begins For those not planning to attend our BBQ, but do want to meet at the show we should probably set a meeting place at the venue. That will be decided later. What I need from you is a quick e-mail letting us know your plans (i.e., will you be at the BBQ or just show). Most are almost perfect ("Cleveland Today"), but one had much of it mistakenly transcribed. Below is the correct lyrics to "Stranger Enter From The East" (followed by the mistake filled transcription for comparison purposes). Some EDAs have also been very curious about the lyrics to the song "Down". I've heard almost every version she's done of this (approx 30 so far) & each one changes considerably from night to night. It's a song with great music but no definate lyrics yet. The "Down" lyrics have been more consistant lately, though. Following the "Stranger" transcription (below) is some "Down" lyrics currently being used. By the time you read this, they've likely changed again. These were lyrics sang on a few nights of the recent LF tour. All the best, MrBB "Stranger Enter From the East" Jewel Kilcher 1997(corrected) I went out a-wandering Beneath an unknown sky The heavens all shook violently You caught my eye A strange fruit fell And struck me to the core My heart became a single flame It wanted nothing more Stranger, enter from the east Stranger, step inside this place And hold me..........hold me The clock became a bullet hole Cruel and unkind It hurt me with its second hand Alone another night Stranger, enter from the east Stranger, step inside this place Blue.....Is that you? Well, don't bother knocking on my door this time Blue..... Go be true for someone else There's no room inside this heart of mine My heart has four empty rooms Three wait for lightning and one waits for you I must have you all to myself Feel the full weight of your skin I'll hollow out my insides To place you in Stranger, enter from the east Stranger, step inside this place And hold me.......hold me Hold me In response to this previous mistaken transcription: <<"Stranger Enter From the East" I run for the water The leaves and no sky Heaven's all shocked violently You call my name Strange blue fin Stroked me to the core My heart became a single flame It wanted nothing more Stranger, enter from the east Stranger, step inside this place All lonely, all lonely God became a bullet hole Cruel and unkind It hurt me with its second hand Alone, another night Stranger, enter from the east Stranger, step inside this place Blue In that little well of water Knocking on my doorstep Blue We threw for someone else There's no woman inside this heart of mine My heart has four empty rooms Three wait for lightning and one waits for you It must have been all to myself The gentle weight of your skin I hollow out my insides To place you in Stranger, enter from the east Stranger, step inside this place All lonely, all lonely Lonely, lonely All lonely>> ************************************** "Down" by Jewel Kilcher 1997 (a recent correct transcription) Take me down to the water Where the cold wind blows Take me out to the wildlife, baby The red light meets the crossbow I will take you there, I will take you there........ Down The exit sign always leads to the west Bar stools begin to cry Jupiter looks for a cosmic sign Still you wonder why I will take you there, Will you take me there?........ Down Underneath the twilight Stars begin to sigh.....still you wonder why You can't think of any words to say (note: this line changes almost every night) Take me out to the strawberry fields The sun drips like honey through my hair Let the warm lights fill me up L.A. or anywhere I will take you there, I will take you there........ Seems that somehow many folks missed it, as way too many questions about the picks are still coming onto the list. Mandy (orderer), Dennis (artwork designer) and I (communicator) are the ones who will do this again, most likely with the help of the same investors/sellers (Rachel, Jared, Kris, Larry, Dennis, Mandy & I). Because of this, it is senseless to keep asking on the list about them or offering suggestions TO the list. It's just unnecessarily contributing to the email in-boxes of nearly 1500 people. If you have comment, ideas or suggestions, please send them to me at this address AND Mandy at mandyd@execnet.net :) Updates on idea/suggestions SINCE my post: THE HOLES IN THE PICKS IDEA: we won't be doing that. That's what drills are for :) Everyone who wants holes can put their own holes in them :) These are guitar picks and many folks will be using them as just that. (as will Jewel, I don't think she'd use picks with holes in them, they'll be weaker and they'll break easier) DIFFERENT COLORS: The next order of picks most likely will all be one color. We are not sure what that color will be. The last batch was light yellow because they HAD to be, based on availability. (We ordered ALL the picks to Jewel's specifications as we were giving many of them to her to use, which she is :) When we ordered them, the only color that was available (in Jewel's specs) were the light yellow ones. We don't want to order more than one color, as we don't want to deal with orders like "I want 3 reds, 2 greens and a blue"...it complicates it too much. The rest of my post from a week ago follows. Again, please don't flood the list with questions about these EDA picks, just email myself and Mandy. (mandyd@execnet.net) _________________ Hey everyone, Just wanted to give y'all an update on the "what's and when's" of the next order of EDA Guitar Picks. We *will* make provisions for bulk orders by *individuals* too (some folk wanted 50 to 100 themselves), details on that will be announced when we launch the next order. Our plans are to order enough as to not have the quick sellout as before, and to again supply Jewel with a batch of them :) SPECIAL NOTE TO KRIS KANES' CUSTOMERS FROM THE FIRST ORDER: Kris IS going to get replacements NOW for the 100 picks he lost and he will contact you folk privately soon :) To see what the EDA Guitar Picks look like, check out: http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup/edapicks.jpg (note the actual picks differ slighly than as depicted on the above jpg The desciption below is correct) THE STORY BEHIND THE PICKS: In early to mid-April, talk of what the list could give Jewel for her birthday surfaced, and MANY ideas came up. I posted this a few months ago, but several new things have been added since then. Its far from finished, but since the Jewel List FAQ is still ridiculously out of date, I've decided to post this new updated version of whats been done so far (in "very rough draft" form.) Quite a bit is purposely left out because I've yet to confirm accuracy on all of it. I want to acknowledge Neal Copperman & Jeff Hanson who began writing this early Jewel history a few years ago. Among other information they provided, both were regulars at The Innerchange so they are able to tell about it first hand. Their previous work was sent out in the FAQ & that was the basis on which this detailed history was started. I hope this helps all the new people & I know there's a few things even the most diehard Jewel fans don't know, so I hope you all find it somewhat educational. Again, forgive my lame writing style. This is simply a rough draft. Enjoy! :-) MrBB **************************************** PS. BEFORE YOU EMAIL ME, please be sure to read: http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup/#mrbb **************************************** PART 1-Brief Kilcher Family History: Jewel's grandparents, Yule Kilcher & his wife Ruth immigrated to Alaska from Switzerland in 1941. They settled in Homer on an 800 acre homestead on Kachemak Bay. (Yule later became state senator & was instrumental in drafting the state constitution. ) Yule & Ruth performed publicly throughout Alaska & Europe. The family musical tradition, together with Ruth's particular flair for ethereal verse and love of the natural world became key elements in the musical tradition passed down to their children (& grandchildren) that survives today. The family farm became well known, at first largely through the efforts of Yule, who made a film about the homesteading life and took it on lecture tours across the states and Europe. It was a difficult life & Ruth took refuge in music and writing. Ruth & Yule had 8 children named Mairiis, Wurtila, Fay, Sunrise, Otto, Stellavera, Catkin & Jewel's father Atz. ``Mom was the main musical force in the family,'' says Mairiis, Yule & Ruth's eldest daughter. ``Singing was always a big unifying force, no matter what other conflicts went on. You can't be mad at each other when you have to harmonize.'' Jewel Kilcher was born May 23, 1974 in Payson,Utah where Atz & Lenedra were living while Atz attended college nearby. (Jewel also has an older brother Shane,a younger brother Atz & a younger half brother Nikos.) Upon graduation from college, Atz & Lenedra moved their family back to Homer Alaska where Jewel & her brothers were raised on the 800-acre homestead. Jewel's parents became a popular Alaskan folk singing duo, well known regionally as Atz & Nedra Kilcher. They released their 1st self produced primarily acoustic album in 1977 entitled "Early Morning Gold". This album consists of original Alaskan folk songs written in collaboration or by Atz alone. Here's an edited excerpt written by Allen Reeves, who at the time of the release was President of the Anchorage Convention & Visitors Bureau: "The first time I ever heard Atz & Nedra Kilcher sing, I was struck by the honesty & simplicity of their beautiful folk music---and with the fact they are making history. You see, there has never before really been any Alaska folk music. Oh, there is ample ethnic music, but no real folk music. Not until Atz & Nedra put verse & melody to the spirit of the 'Great Land' The Kilchers paint a pure portrait of Alaska." In 1978 Atz & Nedra released their second album titled "Born & Raised on Alaska Land". This featured more elaborate production & again featured all originals with the exception of a song written by Atz's sister (Jewel's Aunt), Mairiis "Mossie" Davidson (who also released Alaskan folk albums regionally). Part 2: What happened prior to "Pieces Of You"? In 1980 at the age of six Jewel began accompanying her parents performing for locals & tourists in Alaskan villages, clubs & hotels. Her earliest musical influences consisted primarily of the music of her family and a particular fascination with Ella Fitzgerald. Lenedra, being very spiritually guided, developed Jewel's spiritual side & raised her with a sense of magic as well as an appreciation & deep respect for the Indian Way. Jewel moved to Hawaii in the early 80s & lived with relatives while attending school. She regularly avoided being beat up & the prejudice toward her "being different" by yodeling (a talent she was mastering from Atz). A few years later Jewel's parents divorced & she remained with her father & brothers in Homer. Writing became Jewel's expression of choice since she found herself unable to verbalize many of her strong feelings at this young age. She later became enamored by South American poets Pablo Neruda, Octavio Paz & Giaconda Belli. She also absorbed philosophers Kant, Plato, Dostoevski (& many others) as well as sensual writers such as Henry Miller & Anais Nin. At age 14, Jewel was "adopted" into the native Indian culture. She participated in a ceremony which included a "talking circle". During this she realized that although she had written for years, she was verbally speechless. Her "adopted" uncles took her for a walk & told her "you have a gift to give the world" and related various native Indian wisdom & folklore. (Note: Dig up a copy of a book called "Mindfire- Dialogues In The Other Future" by Alexander Blair-Ewart published by Somerville House. It includes an early interview with Jewel expanding on this time period & her experiences with the native Indian culture.) She then began a conscious effort to speak more from her heart & and began articulating her feelings. During this time she continued to perform with her father as a duo & later in a trio called "New Directions" which featured Jewel,Atz & their friend Suzanne Little. She also joined a local rap group called "Le Creme" briefly. It was over the course of this decade (1980-1990) that Jewel developed her vocal ability & her experience at working a crowd. Atz was a wonderful storyteller & Jewel absorbed his knack for "fun & entertaining between song banter". Her father also instilled an extremely strong work ethic & taught Jewel what a professional musicians life is all about. During this time, repatiore consisted of mainly Atz Kilcher originals with Jewel singing harmony & background vocals. However, Jewel did take lead vocals on popular cover songs of the day such as "Angel From Montgomery" by John Prine, "Me & Bobby McGee" by Kris Kristofferson, the theme from "The Rose", etc, as well as many others. In High School, Jewel began to accompany herself on guitar. Her junior and senior years of high school were spent at Interlochen Fine Arts Academy in Michigan. Here she studied sculpture, art, music & dance. Interlochen is an expensive private school, and 70% of Jewel's first year tuition was paid for by a vocal scholarship. The remainder of the expenses were raised at what turned out to be Jewel's first solo concert. The citizens of Homer were supportive enough to cover the rest of the first year tuition. It was at Interlochen that Jewel's songwriting ideas began germinating. She began to build up a small repatiore of songs. She made a few demo recordings of eleven of these songs. These eleven demos consisted of her very first songwriting attempts. Other than "Don't"(then referred to as "Waltz") & "Dance Between Two Woman"(then simply titled "Dance"), the other 9 songs remain unreleased. Three of those nine ("Billy", "Can't Have My Soul" [NOT WWSYS] & "Money") continued into Jewel's early repatiore. The remaining half dozen being abandoned in favor of many new songs (including "Who Will Save Your Soul"). During Spring Break she joined Lenedra & fell in love with San Diego. The following year she was awarded a full scholarship & returned to Interlochen for her senior year. Upon graduation in the summer of 1992 (& after a brief stay in Boulder, Co,) Jewel again rejoined Lenedra in San Diego, which she now calls home. Jewel worked a variety of jobs including waitressing, but generally lost them when her interest in chatting with the customers surpassed her desire to do the actual job. Eventually she decided that working unfulfilling dead-end jobs was an unbearable way to live. With Lenedra's encouragement they moved out of their apartment, into their vans, to pursue their dreams. With lots of peanut butter, carrot sticks, and a guitar, Jewel settled down to write more songs. Around this time of new songwriting activity, she became very close to local songwriter, Steve Poltz & his band The Rugburns. They shared songs with each other & began collaborating on material. Steve taught Jewel how to better work within a "verse/chorus/verse" structure & his influence balanced her very serious writing style with his more humorous & spontaneous style.(They still periodically collaborate.) Her new ability to churn out songs was revealing a prolific talent at songwriting. She regularly debuted new songs to friends & this endeared her to the few who heard them. In late1993 & early 1994, she began performing sporadic gigs to sparse crowds at various area coffeehouses including one in Pacific Beach called The Innerchange. Word started to spread, and eventually she had a regular Thursday night spot there and an ever growing audience. Her name began to show up in the local press and she landed a few choice opening spots. She took an extended trip back to Homer at the end of the year, and things really took off when she returned to San Diego in early 1994. At the start of the year, the coffeehouse was roughly 60% full, and a mere $3 got you a 3-4 hour set of original material, with the only exception being an occasional cover of Tracy Chapman's "Behind the Wall". Becoming a prolific, versatile songwriter, Jewel still regularly debuted a handful of new songs at each show. These shows were a hotbed of local acoustic talent, and Jewel was regularly joined by frequent collaborator Steve Poltz. Fellow Rugburns Rob Driscoll and Gregory Page also joined them, as well as other local musicians including Joy Eden Harrison, Cindy Lee Berryhill, John Katchur and Byron Nash. Jewel also saw her first "official release" as a participant on 91X's sampler of area talent called "Saint Doug" around this time. She included a take of "Angel Needs A Ride". Everyone who saw her must have told five friends, since each week the crowd continued to grow. Soon, people were being turned away, while a few hardy souls could be seen staring through the large windows at the packed house inside. For extra money, Jewel put together a tape that she briefly distributed herself called "Shiva Diva Doo Wop" which contained the songs "1000 Miles Away", "She Cries","Painters" & "My Own Private God's Gift To Woman".The tape came with a j-card insert that also featured an original drawing by Jewel. Income was also supplemented by selling posters of original artwork by Lenedra which featured a blue background with a purple angel on it & the words "Participate In Miracles". The purple angel glowed in the dark & they sold for $5. The concept behind these posters was to buy two of them, keep one for yourself & post the other in a place you felt could benefit from its message. Around this time, the news of the young (19!) singer had gotten to L.A., and record executives started driving down to sleepy San Diego to catch the shows. They immediately recognized the quality of what they were seeing, and soon the limos were directed towards Jewel's van/home. She was wined & dined by various companies only to be dropped off back at her van. :-) After a brief courtship, she was signed to Atlantic Records by Jenny Price in March of 1994. They started making the trek up to L.A. looking for producers and musicians to record with. The advance on the record enabled Jewel to rent a house with Lenedra, & to purchase a new car (a used Volvo) and a new guitar (a steal due to an imperfection in the finish). All this added exposure continued to draw crowds to The Innerchange, which first added a second show, and then upped the admission price to $5. By this time, Jewel had written over a hundred songs. On July 28 and 29, 1994, a sound crew descended on The Innerchange to record 4 sets of Jewel on her home stomping grounds. All the live recordings on "Pieces of You" come from those two sessions. The remainder of POY was recorded at Neil Young's Redwood Digital Studio at his Broken Arrow Ranch in Woodside,CA during the following month. Atlantic prepared to help promote the album with a number of promotional items. The most popular of these is a CD called "Save The Linoleum". This was released to radio stations to promote the single "Who Will Save Your Soul" & featured both live & studio outtakes from the POY recordings. Included were unreleased versions of "My Own Private God's Gift To Woman", "I'm Sensitive","Race Car Driver", & "Flower". Also an EPK (electronic press kit) was produced for press release along with a contest to win a trip to San Diego. This EPK included a videotape called "Jewel & Mike Take San Diego". It featured an interview done by local DJ Mike Halloran & a brief tour through Jewel's life at the time. Besides interviews, footage included a tour of The Innerchange, the spot where she parked her van every night, surfing, hilarious footage inside Steve Poltz' apartment along with an impromptu duet of YWMFM & a home video of WWSYS. An official video was also produced for WWSYS for release to the video channels. Jewel began 1995 doing what is termed a "residency tour". January was spent rotating 5 nights a week from 5 California venues. Febuary repeated this procedure but hit a rotation of Washington DC, Philadelphia, Cambridge & NYC. It wound up in NYC at Ludlow Street Cafe on 2/28/95, the same day Atlantic released Jewel's album "Pieces Of You". Back home two days later, on 3/2/95, Jewel performed both an early & late show to friends & local supporters in celebration of the album's release at the Cosmopolitan Theater in San Diego. For those wondering about it, its a full band blues. Although writing credit is not given to Jewel, it's identical to the standard blues changes of her "I Got The Blues More Than You Do Blues" but much "heavier" with the full band treatment. The lyrics are fairly humorous & are obviously custom tailored to fit this project. The basic subject matter is "cruisin in her Coupe De Ville, heading off to surf". There's even a joke reference to the Cadillac being a real "jewel". :-) Jewel also takes the humorous lead guitar solo on her acoustic. Although destined to be just a footnote in Jewel's repertoir, its good diversionary fun. Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk content-length: 1196 Hi y'all, Well, long-time list member Adam Longfellows' award winning "Pieces Of Jewel" web site has nailed down another top award! :) It has been named by the Point/Lycos as a Top Website. This is THE most prestigious one, not to mention the fact that ONLY 4 other music sites presently have this commendation. He can't rest on the ol' laurels though, it must be kept up to standards to maintain this merit. Considering he's constantly adding to it, and is soon to unveil the "New & Improved" Performance Chronology, that likely won't be a problem. I know it's hard to believe the Performance Chronology can be any better, but wait until you see this! :) This is really cool, as Jewel can now boast that she has a "Top 5% Internet Website" about her :) This distinction is distributed to CNN Technology and media world wide, and a review of his site (we are not sure by whom exactly) will be out within a week. When I get it I'll post it :) Adam's amazing site can be viewed right here: http://home.sprynet.com/sprynet/xenomorph/jewelmn.htm Mike P.S. Tara MacLean show review coming soon :) Toledo Blade, Sunday August 31, 1997- Arts & Entertainment section MUSIC "Jewel continues to polish sparkling music career" BY DAVID YONKE Jewel Kilcher doesn't want to be put on a pedestal. "People look at me in magazines and feel I'm a phenomenon, as if what I've accomplished is beyond their ability," she told one interviewer recently. "I tell them to knock it off. If you respect what I've done, then go do something yourself." What Jewel has done is blaze her own trail to stardom, starting at her family's 800-acre homestead near Homer, Alaska, and leading to the national spotlight as a concert headliner and multi-platinum recording artist. The 23-year-old singer-songwriter, who performs a sold-out concert Saturday night at the Toledo Zoo Ampitheatre, has connected with millions of fans who appreciate the emotional honesty and intensity of her music. She was one of the top names on the highly successful Lilith Fair tour, the summer festival featuring an all-female lineup, she appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone in May, and has been featured on all the prestigious network shows, from The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and The Rosie O'Donnell Show to Saturday Night Live and Good Morning America. Jewel's latest album, "Pieces Of You," has sold more than 5 million copies and spent more than 16 weeks in the Top 10 of Billboard magazine's album chart. It wasn't a quick ride to the top, however. "Pieces Of You" was released on Feb. 28, 1995, but didn't crack the Billboard album chart until April, 1996- 64 weeks later. Within a month after that, however, the CD had sold a million copies. Jewel's breakthough song was the plaintive "Who Will Save Your Soul," which she said was inspired by an episode of people-watching. "One of my favorite things to do is sit and watch people walking by. I remember the details of what people look like- their expressions, their posture, their words. I make up their lives to be tragic or boring or brilliant or normal." Jewel developed her vivid imagination while growing up in the family's Alaskan homestead. Not only was there no television, but there was no shower and the only bathroom was an outhouse. Her parents were musicians, and Jewel begain joining them onstage when she was 6. Her yodeling routine was a real crowd pleaser. After her parents got a divorce some years later, Jewel traveled with her father for the next seven years, performing in bars and nightclubs. "After my parents got divorced, I started writing poetry a lot because I didn't always know how to express myself," Jewel said. "That, to me, is the real beauty of writing. It makes you more intimate with yourself." She won a partial vocal scholarship to the Interlochen Fine Arts Academy in Michigan, where she spent her junior and senior years of high school. "My two years there were a turning point. I saw a bigger world," she said. "I immersed myself in everything- drama, dance, sculpture, music." Jewel moved to San Diego to be with her mother after graduation, but felt restless. "I had no desire to go to college but also felt to peace in travelling or just bumming around," she said. "I got a number of dead-end jobs. Got fired a couple of times. I was frightened and depressed. The idea of spending my life in a 9-to-5 job made me feel trapped and hopeless." She said she lived in her van for a while, existing on a diet of carrots and peanut butter. In between surfing and poetry-writing, she began playing guitar and singing in San Diego coffee shops. She got a job performing weekly at the Innerchange Coffeehouse, and the audiences steadily grew. With every show a sell-out, record executives began to take notice. Several major labels courted her until she decided to sign with Atlantic. Jewel's latest release is the single, "V-12 Cadillac," featured in a collection called "Music for Our Mother Ocean, Vol. II." Proceeds from the album sales will go to the Surfrider foundation, a nonprofit organization that works to protect the oceans. "When I was living in my car, I prayed every night that I'd get to live my dream, and that by me living my dream, people would remember theirs," Jewel said. Jewel performs at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Toledo Zoo Ampitheare. The concert is sold out. ---------------------- just sorta interesting. I think he actually had all of his facts right.
