Featured performers will be Cindy Lee Berryhill & Elizabeth Hummel & an incredible cast of characters..... AmyJo's family has a few cottages on a private beach in Brewster & this will be an all day affair. Although the performers & a few long distance friends have already reserved the open rooms in the cottages, camping nearby will be available as well as local Inns for lodging. Overnight camping on the property will not be available so you'll need to make arrangements accordingly. (The other cottages are rented to tenants already & we cannot have people camping in the yards.) You'll be welcome to come early & enjoy the beach. We'll have a big BBQ going, so feel free to bring food & drinks. A small market is also available nearby if you want to purchase food upon arrival. I will be bringing down a PA & this gig will be outdoors. The deck of the cottage will serve as a stage & the yard can hold approximately 100 people comfortably. We already have about 40 friends & family attending & we invite the New England EDAs to join us! If you'd like to join us, please RSVP us at MrBBaug9th@aol.com Directions & lodging/camping info will be sent shortly after reciept of your RSVP. Reservations are needed for this. Donation to the musicians is $10 per person. I think Dennis Harris has plans for another gig the following day in Taunton which is only an hour away so you might want to make a weekend out of it. Please do NOT reply to this adress. Only reply to MrBBaug9th@aol.com Looking forward to seeing many of you again! Salt Spring Island is located in Canada's Gulf Islands, just north of the U.S. San Juan Islands (off the coast of Seattle, Washington), midway between the two British Columbia cities of Vancouver, on the mainland, and Victoria on Vancouver Island. The event is being planned for the Labor Day holiday weekend. Again, this is not for sure, and there are logistics to be worked out on all sides, but IF it happens I propose we call the event Indian Summerstock since it'll be Indian Summer here then -- when the temperatures are mildest, the sunsets most colourful, the evenings long and the night sky filled with constellations that circle round the Jewel of the North star. EDAs are welcome to stay with me, but it could get crowded so I'm looking into cabins and other nearby accomodations to suit all tastes. Today I checked out the site of an amazing hostel that's situated on ten acres of old growth forest with a creek running through the heart of it. There are more traditional hostel/lodge accomodations available but the site also has three Indian tipis (tepees) that sleep four and a Winnie the Pooh-style tree house to stay in that sleeps two. There's even Eeyore, Piglet, Owl and a honey pot at the bottom of the tree. (You can check out the tree-house and tipis at http://www.beacom.com//ssihostel/hostel.htm The main page of this site is at http://www.beacom.com/ssihostel The rates page is mixed up at present, but I talked with the owners and we'd get members rates of CDN $14 per person per night in the tipis and CDN $20 per person per night in the tree house. That's about US $10 a night in the tipis and US $15 a night to stay up the tree.) So, while it's not yet officially on, start thinking about Indian Summerstock starting August 29 and let me know ASAP who wants to come so we can organize everything (rides, carpools, accomodation, contributions/expenses etc. for the artists etc. etc.) Don't want to get anyone's hopes higher than mine, but, with all of us cooperating we could have our first Northwest gathering -- with music by Cindy Lee Berryhill and Elizabeth Hummel. So RSVP to howenow@imagen.net as soon as you can! Directions & lodging/camping info will be sent shortly after confirmation from Bart, manager of the Living Room Tour that Elizabeth and Cindy can make it on the anticipated date(s). Without camping and a starry night sky, the event wouldn't serve it's original purpose. A gathering is still planned because so many EDAs will be in the area for Lilith Fair. Man-D has volunteered to follow up and she is now the contact person for the new yet to be renamed event. I would like to apologize for any inconvenience I have caused. My intention was to present a place and a plan and a time that would give everyone a lifetime memory. Point Sal is still a place I would like to share with all of you. It is kept as a secret by so many that have visited it. It's empty beach and seclusion make it very special. In an old brochure about CA State Parks, it was listed as a primitive camp site with free camping. I have camped there many times since first discovering it including a few weeks ago when I did a dry run to check it out for us. The other reason to postpone this event is because of the Bearsville reunion. It falls on a specific date where SN was picked because of many EDAs passing through anyway. For many people that don't get to go to some of the gatherings, they still get to enjoy them with the posts. It would be unfair to have both events timed so close to each other. The pleasure of virtually attending through reading the posts would be diluted. STARRY NIGHT will be rescheduled for some time in early fall in a location that is a favorite of Jewel's. Songs" cd will not be released until J U L Y 2 2 , 1 9 9 7 now. here are a few of the actual exclusive tracks to be included: Tori Amos - "Silent All These Years" Dave Matthews Band - "Satellite" Melissa Etheridge - "I Want To Come Over" Joan Osborne - "Ladder" Tracy Chapman - "Fast Car" Bush - "Come Down" these were the only songs listed... other artists include: Better Than Ezra, Goo Goo Dolls, Jewel, Barenaked Ladies, Fleming & John, Dishwalla, Jars Of Clay, and Paul Waesterberg. (looks like Poe and Heather Nova have been excluded, as the cd will have only 14 tracks) All proceeds will go to help support RAINN, the rape abuse and incest national network co-founded by Tori Amos. The proceeds will directly benefit RAINN's Campus Outreach program. Due to the alarming occurrence of "acquaintance rape" among the college population (the highest risk group for sexual crimes), this program will concentrate on raising awareness of the issue of rape, as well as the availability of the 24-hour RAINN hotline. Cover art for the cd was created by pop art icon Peter Max. With previous Live X cd's, 99x was able to raise $35,000 for Habitat for Humanity and $82,000 for the Grady Hospital pediatric/adolescent AIDS program. Both previous cd's sold out in a matter of weeks, and the same is expected for RAINN songs. 99x will be holding a cd-release party for RAINN songs where you can purchace the cd in advance of street date. Last time, it was an invite only party (you had to win tickets on the radio or pay big bucks to get in) and Sarah McLaughlan was there to sign copies of the cd. Considering this is releated to Tori Amos is a big way, i would not be surprised if she was scheduled to be there to do the same. (this is my opinion, it has not been said or written anywhere!) Her generous, 13-song set demonstrated how far she has evolved since her best-selling debut album "Pieces of You". Once confined to a few simple chords and adolescent lyrics, she has evolved into a confident and intriguing performer. The showcase of her set, her hit "Foolish Games" is a song that lives or dies depending on the young singer's vocal phrasing =97 her voice is now a powerful and dramatic instrument, capable of holding notes past their breaking point. Not afraid to take risks, including performing a sentimental tribute to a friend who committed suicide, Jewel also strapped on an electric guitar and ripped out a cover of 'Dancing Barefoot' that has become a highlight of her set. __________________________________________________________ Mike :) **** The Jewel Mailing List Netiquette & New Member Guide at: http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup=20 Bearsville97/JewelStock Reunion/EDA Gathering site at: http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup/bv97/bv97.htm EDA Guitar Picks Online at: http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup/edapicks.htm Patty Griffin Tour Dates & more at: http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup/pattyg/patttour.htm Ducksoup@spectra.net DuckofPrey@aol.com **** From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Wed Jul 9 03:12:23 1997 Return-Path: Received: by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4) id CAA02310; Wed, 9 Jul 1997 02:58:29 -0400 Date: Wed, 9 Jul 1997 02:58:29 -0400 Message-Id: <199707090658.CAA02310@jane.smoe.org> To: jewel-news@smoe.org From: Mike Connell Subject: Jewel News: EDA Guitar Picks: At long last come & get 'em!! Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk content-length: 9349 Hi y'all, I won't get into any reasons why this is so late. The EDA Guitar Picks are here & we are ready to sell them. :) Also, for those that are new to the list and have no clue as to what an EDA Guitar Pick is, there will be an explanation of the story and what they look like at the end of this email. Quick explanation for the REALLY, REALLY new. EDA stands for EveryDay Angels....EDAs are members of this mailing list....Jewel herself dubbed us as EveryDay Angels :) EDA GUITAR PICK WEB SITE: For those that like web sites, just go here for the exact same info that is in this here email: http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup/edapicks.htm At that site you can also view a picture of about what the picks look like. (The final product differs slightly from what the picture shows) Please take your time and read the following carefully. It's all clear (I hope) but there is alot here to read. Print it out if necessary. (Good idea anyway in case you accidently delete the email :) HOW MANY TO SELL, HOW MANY CAN YOU GET: On to business. We have 600 of these picks to sell (120 others we are giving to Jewel, see story below), and we have six sellers. There is a *limit* of SIX picks per person. If you are thinking that six is not enough....that you play a guitar and will go through six in no time flat, then you missed the point of the project. :) No biggie :) The intent of these picks are that they are a "Jewel/EDA fan" item. Yeah some EDAs will use them as a guitar pick (novel idea :) but I'm sure others will want to have them as souvenirs/collectors items, as Jewel will be using these same picks in the coming months (we ordered them to her specifications, without her knowing about them). Thus, we want to give as many EDAs a chance to get some of these as we can. At a limit of six picks, that guarantees a minimum of 100 EDAs can get picks, and with our pricing scheme as many as 300 could get them. If we sell out and there is still a strong demand, we can & *will* order more to sell. THE PRICING PLAN: OK, here's the plan. We have 600 pics to sell, and they cost very close enough to $300 total to call it $300. So the price ranges will be: 1) two picks for one US dollar -or- 2) four picks for two US dollars -or- 3) six picks for three US dollars CASH ONLY! No checks, no money orders, just USA dollar bills. PLEASE fear not about sending the cash to these six sellers, they are EDAs who for the most part have either been involved in more than a few list projects, or have worked their tail off being tried & true Jewel fans in their own right. I know that two EDAs posted earlier today about getting ripped-off by some guy selling Jewel posters, but he was likely a ripoff artist from the get-go. This EDA pick project has been in the works for months, and as I said, each of the EDA pick sellers listed below have been involved with list projects and such for ages. Fear not, this is for real :) ORDERING PLAN: To order, decide if you want two, four or six picks. You will then Email a seller of your choice at one of the email addresses listed below. They will then Email you back to confirm your order and they will send you their postal mailing address. You will then send them an envelope with the required one to three US dollars for your purchase AND include in the envelope you send them a SELF ADDRESSED *STAMPED* ENVELOPE!! IMPORTANT, include this envelope!! For USA folk, this will be a measly 32 more cents. (If you don't include this self addressed stamped envelope, the seller will be forced to email you back to send them one) FOREIGN ORDERS: For Canada folk, same process, send USA dollars and the self addressed Canadian-stamped envelope. For foreign-overseas orders, I haven't a clue as to the postage cost, but you should know the cost of sending a letter from the USA and back, as that's what it will be...the weight of the picks is less or equal to a normal letter. So if you live overseas and want picks, it's up to you figure out the cost of mailing them back to you, get USA dollars to mail to your sellers and to supply them with the postage & an envelope to send you your picks. *WHO* TO ORDER FROM: Send an Email to *one* of the six people below, telling them if you want 2, 4 or 6 picks. You pick which one to write to! IMPORTANT!! PLEASE make the *subject* of the Email: EDA picks That way, your Email will stand out to them :) If they are sold out, they will tell you to try another seller. Once a seller is sold out, they will post to the list and me saying so. (I would update the web site accordingly) Tell them how many picks you want in this first email, that way the sellers can keep a running inventory on their picks. They will write you back with their postal mailing address, you then send them: a) the cash required (USA dollar bills ONLY) b) the self-addressed *stamped* envelope. c) a note that has your Email address on it, in case the seller has to email you back It's that easy :) The sellers are: Mandy Dilts mandyd@execnet.net Dennis Harris harrisbros@aol.com Larry Greenfield graywolfwla@earthlink.net Kris Kane zerog@interaccess.com Jared Jacobus SDAngelLI@aol.com Rachel Martin CornflkGl@aol.com Please note that one of the above (who shall remain nameless) is out of town right now and may not be able to reply to your Email until Friday or so. In other words, don't worry if you don't hear back from your seller by Firday or Saturday. If you don't hear from them by next Sunday the 13th, feel free to write me at ducksoup@spectra.net Your best bet is to 'cut and paste' the address for who you choose. To avoid confusing Email addresses (as sometimes it is hard to tell what is what): In Larry's address, it's graywolfla (The 'la' is as in Los Angeles) In Jared's address, it's SDAngelLI (the LI is as in Long Island) In Rachel's address, they are "ells", not "ones" nor "capital I's" TIP: if you ever have doubts as to what the letter/number is in an Email address, print it out. It usually becomes clear when you do....ones & ells look alike on some Email programs, ells and capital I's look alike on AOL. Printing them clears it up :) Please, do not ask one of the sellers for more than six picks, we want as many EDAs as we can to get some, and as I said we can and will order more if the demand dictates so. Please remember to make the *subject* of your Email to your seller: EDA Picks By the way I am NOT selling these picks, so don't order from me. Howver I can answer ANY questions, as can Mandy. KUDOS & THANX: I want to applaud Mandy Dilts (of the Mandy triplets!!) for really hands-on coordinating the whole thing. (This is NOT the "Starry Night/OceanFest/gonna marry Farr" Mandy) Mandy took in the upfront cash from the 'investors' and ordered the picks, dealt with the problems that developed etc. Applause, applause!! The following (all sellers too) also invested 50$ upfront to fund this project: Kris Kane, Rachel Martin, Jared Jacobus, Larry Greenfield, myself and Dennis Harris (who also designed the artwork for the picks). Adrian du Plessis also invested some cash when it appeared the project would cost more than we originally thought, but the price returned to about the original cost estimate. Also, thanks to whomever it was that first came up with the EDA Guitar Picks idea. I cannot remember who it was. Will the person of honor please speak up? THE STORY BEHIND THE PICKS: In early to mid-April, talk of what the list could give Jewel for her birthday surfaced, and MANY ideas came up. Two basically came to be. One was the actual star that was named for Jewel. (more on that later) The other was this EDA guitar pick thing. The idea was to make some guitar picks for Jewel, and to sell some to the EDAs. It was hoped to get them to Jewel by her birthday, but due to Murphy's Law, it was not to be. THE BRAND/TYPE OF PICK: The picks made are D'Adario brand, in the medium gauge. They are a pale yellow in color. On one side there is what we call the 'smoo' angel, and on the otherside, it says "We Are EveryDay Angels" and it has an 'illuminated' halo below the print. Both designs are by Dennis Harris. We consulted people in the Jewel camp on pick preferences, and we got these to match one of the styles of picks Jewel uses. We ordered 720 of them, 120 for Jewel as a present from the EDAs, 600 to sell to the EDAs. JEWEL'S OTHER EDA GIFT, THE STAR: In a nutshell, the EDAs also gave Jewel a real star for her birthday. A star in the middle of the 'bucket' of the Little Dipper is now and forever known as "Jewel Kilcher - Jewel of the North" (Well, forever on planet Earth anyway, the Klingons may call it D'Martog for all I know ;) To see more on the star gift, all you need to do is go to the page set up for it on Adam Longfellow's "Pieces Of Jewel" page at: http://home.sprynet.com/sprynet/xenomorph/birthday.htm Your fellow EDA, Mike :) **** The Jewel Mailing List Netiquette & New Member Guide at: http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup Bearsville97/JewelStock Reunion/EDA Gathering site at: http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup/bv97/bv97.htm EDA Guitar Picks Online at: http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup/edapicks.htm Patty Griffin Tour Dates & more at: http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup/pattyg/patttour.htm Ducksoup@spectra.net DuckofPrey@aol.com **** From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Wed Jul 9 03:17:24 1997 Return-Path: Received: by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4) id DAA02677; Wed, 9 Jul 1997 03:13:36 -0400 Message-Id: <199707090713.DAA02677@jane.smoe.org> To: Jewel-News@smoe.org From: shallowend@asan.com Date: 7 Jul 97 06:16:16 -0800 Subject: Jewel News: Jewel pic at lilith fair web site Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk content-length: 105 There's a picture of Jewel from her lilith fair performance yesterday at www.lilithfair.com. She just doesn't understand them. ``I'd never heard Joni Mitchell before I did my album,'' the 23-year-old singer-songwriter says in the August issue of US magazine. ``I'd heard a lot of Bob Dylan, Ella Fitzgerald. ... I've never been a real music fan. I'm odd that way.'' So odd, she confesses, that a friend used to bring her up to speed by playing selections from his record collection. ``I'd never heard the Replacements,'' she says. ``I'd never heard the Beatles' `White Album.' He sat me down and had what he called Jewel 101 classes.'' Her debut, ``Pieces of You,'' has already spawned two hit singles -- ``Who Will Save Your Soul?'' and ``You Were Meant for Me.'' Jewel says she is simply amazed by her success. ``It's like a jalopy winning the Indy 500,'' she says. Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk content-length: 4088 http://www.canoe.ca/JamMusic/jul7_maclachlan.html Monday, July 7, 1997 Beautiful women, beautiful day Lilith Fair off to noticeably non-rocky start By JANE STEVENSON Toronto Sun GEORGE, Wash. -- Sarah McLachlan's Lilith Fair got off to a promising if somewhat mellow start Saturday night at the spectacular outdoor amphitheatre known as The Gorge, about two-and-a-half hours east of Seattle.=20 =A0 Promising in that the festival, making the first of 35 stops in North America this summer (including Aug. 15 and 16 at Toronto's Molson Amphitheatre), was sold out. All the shows are either sold out or close to it, making it the most successful of the summer festivals so far.=20 =A0 Close to 20,000 people -- the woman/man ratio in the audience was about 60/40 and the crowd was as diverse as I've seen at any festival -- flocked to the event celebrating female performers.=20 =A0 It was mellow in that apart from standout sets by lively up-and-comer Paula Cole and folk-rocker Tracy Chapman on the main stage, which overlooked the magnificent Columbia River Gorge and the surrounding hills, the event was in serious need of some female rockers.=20 =A0 And we all know they're out there. In fact, Sheryl Crow was rumored to be making a surprise appearance Saturday night but never showed. (Thankfully the Toronto dates include Indigo Girls and Meredith Brooks on the rotating lineup.)=20 =A0 "We did ask some harder edged artists," McLachlan said at a news conference just before the music got under way.=20 =A0 "Some of them had been on the road for a long time and were sick of touring, which I can certainly respect. Others were in the studios and others just looked at it and went, 'Well, that's not my scene.' We got about 90% of the people we asked for."=20 =A0 When asked if The Spice Girls were on her wish list, McLachlan joked: "We didn't think we'd get them. But we're all Spice Girls up here anyway."=20 =A0 As it was, folk was definitely the order of the day at The Gorge, with the mainstage lineup rounded out by Suzanne Vega, Jewel and, of course, McLachlan.=20 =A0 One notable exception was jazz singer Cassandra Wilson, who knocked everyone out with her half-hour, smooth-as-they-come set on the smaller stage.=20 =A0 Vega said she was honored to be "the first act on the first night of the first Lilith Fair."=20 =A0 Cole echoed those sentiments. "I'm really proud that Lilith Fair exists today. I think it's a symbol of hope."=20 =A0 Jewel, as lovely as she is to look at, really didn't need to shove it down our throats. Photographers jumped all over each other to shoot her as she performed in a clingy, sheer, red cocktail dress and black, high-heeled sandals. As the sun set behind her not much was left to the imagination.=20 =A0 Interestingly, Jewel had earlier told the news conference: "I think women have been pretty dependent on their sex to sell themselves, generally in a lot of businesses, and something I've really respected from a lot of the women here is that they're very balanced in their sexuality." Oh, well.=20 =A0 McLachlan treated a small audience to an acoustic set on the smaller stage first -- "I just want to say I'm glad there's so many men out there," she commented -- before her headline performance four and a half hours after Vega.=20 =A0 Unfortunately the crowd, who spent a lot of the hot day either eating, standing in long bathroom lineups or shopping at the various stands (business was slow at the Love Tent while Seattle-based magazine RockGrl was selling out of its Lilith Fair issue), was weary by the time she appeared.= =20 =A0 Wearing a long, flowing black gown and what appeared to be a gold, sequined top in the design of a breastplate, McLachlan was nonetheless a perfect ending to the long day as her ethereal voice rang out into the starry night.= =20 =A0 "I've been looking forward to this for a really long time," McLachlan said earlier. "It's a beautiful day and I'm surrounded by beautiful women. Hell, what could be better."=20 =A0 For a lot of people, it seems, not much.=20 =A0 SUN RATING 3 OUT OF 5=20 From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Wed Jul 9 03:32:23 1997 Return-Path: Received: by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4) id DAA03152; Wed, 9 Jul 1997 03:28:37 -0400 Message-Id: <199707090728.DAA03152@jane.smoe.org> To: Jewel-News@smoe.org From: From Aliceinw1@aol.com Date: 7 Jul 97 16:35:30 -0800 Subject: Fwd: Jewel News: Jewel in Entertainment Weekly Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk content-length: 1088 Jewel is featured as one of the 100 Most Creative People in Entertainment, 1997 in the double issue w/ Uma Thurman on the cover. The [success] of...Jewel Kilcher, [an artist] on Atlantic records, [proves] this. Listen to the stories told by the massively popular Jewel (whose biggest songs so far are "Who Will Save Your Soul?" and "You Were Meant for Me"), who got her start doing the open-mike coffee-shop circuit. "I have an incredible fan base.... The radio stations wouldn't play me, but my fans spread the word about me so much, and through the Internet... they got radio to play it, and I'm really thankful." Jewel's Web based fans have even organized a group called the Every Day Angels--with their own Web sites. "I talk to the Every Day Angels (EDA) a lot," says Jewel. "They show up at my shows with little signs and blue guitars with little EDAs painted on them. When I was recording in Woodstock, they asked if they all got there would I put on a free concert? I said sure! So all these EDAs that have known each other for two years--since the beginning of my album--all met through the computer. 'Jewelstock' they called it. They drove from Missouri, San Francisco, everywhere, to come to Jewelstock, and I put on two shows for them." CAN THE WEB BREAK AN ARTIST? Though the Internet played an important role in launching their careers,...Jewel still had to promote [her butt] off through standard media outlets. When record labels and rock stars aren't counting the cash, they may be searching their souls. That's another scenario where the Net can help. "When I get upset or disillusioned by the business," says Jewel, "it's really refreshing.... The Every Day Angels' site sends me e-mails telling me they appreciate what I'm doing, and I can't tell you how much it helps me at times. When you become jaded and cynical, when you think you have to be high-tech, slick, and too cool, they let you know that sincerity is what they really respond to." *************************************************************** Cheers! And although the music simmered often, only rarely did it heat to a full boil. But if the first all-woman music festival known as Lilith Fair didn't rock out the way its male counterparts do, well, that's OK. It was never intended to. Judging from the Lilith Fair's first showing, however, it did achieve exactly what its founder wanted. It proved to the music industry that the public will pay to hear one superb musician after another -- even if they are all girls. Lilith Fair was created by singer Sarah McLachlan -- known for folk-laden tunes like ``Possession'' and ``Good Enough'' -- after she observed the masculinity of Lollapalooza-like festival lineups. And for eight hours Saturday in front of a capacity crowd, the Gorge became a showbox for some of the prime female voices in the music business -- Jewel, McLachlan and Tracy Chapman among them. Theirs were earnest voices, unafraid to wrap their emotions about them like a sarong. They sang about poverty and child abuse, about domestic violence and divorce. Jewel told the audience about a friend who committed suicide because he was fat and thought no one would love him. For all its serious mindedness, the concert also had the feel of a joyously-overgrown slumber party. With women sitting cross-legged in the grass at her feet, McLachlan started off the event mid-afternoon with an intimate acoustic set on a small side stage. Nearby a skin care company blanketed the crowd with samples of ``Pore Perfect,'' an adhesive strip that plucks blackheads from clogged nose flesh. At The Love Tent, vendors hawked flowing cotton dresses. A shoe manufacturer was on hand with the latest in fashionable footwear. The second stage performers offered up the heaviest musical dose while combating clipping winds and a sound system that made it seem as though they sang through jello. Leah Andreone's nimble voice pierced with aching conviction on ``It's Alright, It's OK'' and a cover of Nirvana's ``Come As You Are.'' On the main stage, Suzanne Vega opened with favorites like ``Luka'' and ``Tom's Diner,'' while Paula Cole thumped the audience with rousing versions of ``Tiger'' and ``Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?'' Jewel's warbly vocal gymnastics were right on with their clarity and near childlike purity in songs like ``Who Will Save Your Soul.'' Although McLachlan deserves heaps of praise for being forward thinking enough to put together such a festival, the headlining spot should have gone to Tracy Chapman. Chapman's fantastically energetic set had the crowd on its feet with blues-licked songs like ``Give Me One Reason.'' She was cheered back on for an encore. Although dulcetly executed, McLachlan's closing set ended the evening on a mellow note. Still, the crowd was polite enough to cheer her on for an encore as well. In truth, the main stage was heavy on heart-felt folk style rock to a flaw. Jewel hit it on the head when, upon picking up a new instrument, she joked, ``Oh God, I have an electric guitar in my hands.'' And although the festival was created to celebrate women in music, all of the main acts were backed by all-male bands -- except McLachlan who had one female vocalist. It would have been nice to see an all-woman band in the lineup. L7 or Babes in Toyland -- although out of place with their aggressive anger-driven racket -- would have been a welcome change of pace. Of course, no matter what headway McLachlan and crew make for womankind with Lilith Fair, it seems some things will never change: Visits to the portable restrooms found that the men still forgot to put the toilet seats down. -30- From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Wed Jul 9 04:02:24 1997 Return-Path: Received: by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4) id DAA03462; Wed, 9 Jul 1997 03:37:40 -0400 Message-Id: <199707090737.DAA03462@jane.smoe.org> To: Jewel-News@smoe.org From: ABershaw@aol.com Date: 8 Jul 97 08:25:26 -0800 Subject: Jewel News: MrBB-Foolish Games Video Premiers next week hopefully Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk content-length: 255 Hi all, Lenedra (J's mom) told me that she just reviewed the rough cut of the new "Foolish Games" video & said "I really love it". "Fuck You !" Jewel Kilcher,23,native of Homer,Alaska, seller of four million copies of her album Pieces Of You,is flipping a cheery V-Sign to the punter who has asked, before she's played a note, whether her breasts are real. His 40 fellow Glaswegians, mostly record shop owners, bussed in at record company expense in the hope they'll plug Jewel a tad more keenly, chuckle along. Here,at Maxaluna,on Sauchiehall Street, with a backdrop of Peter Wyngarde, she takes her guitar off her back, unzips its bag and plays half an hour of songs interspersed with yodels and anecdotes about meeting Bob Dylan. Not one bold Scotsperson dare go within 10 feet of her.As she finishes (no encores),to complete the package,Jewel places the guitar back in its case, zips it up,puts it on her back, marches off to a waiting Rolls Royce and shoots back to her Hilton Hotel, with Nedra Carroll, her "mom" and chaperone in tow. "It's not hard to come to Europe where nobody knows me,"she coos."People ask how I go from playing big halls and being famous to places where they treat you like shit.Neither seems real or very different". Yule Kilcher,Jewel's paternal grandfather, emigrated from Switzerland to Alaska in time to help draft the state charter. His son,Atz,married Nedra and the pair made albums as a folk duo.Jewel and her two brothers were raised as mormons on a homestead with no running water or television. When Jewel was 8,her parents divorced. She found herself with Atz,who liked a drink.Soon,it was off to "mom" in Anchorage. After Jewel secured a "vocal scholarship" at Interlochen Fine Arts Academy,Michigan,Nedra re-located to San Diego.Jewel joined her, living in a VW van.Nedra, one of life's chaperones, lived in the van next door. "It was horrifying," Jewel clucks."I was young,my hands were small.I didn't have an understanding of how to make an impact on my world, how to get beyond waitressing in coffee shops." Broke and low on self-esteem ("I never thought I was a good songwriter,or even that I was a songwriter.I was never that self- assuming of myself"),whatever a vocal scholarship was,it was time to put it to good use.Soon Jewel was singing her heart out at the Innerchange coffee house. "I was tired of surviving, putting all my time,my creativity into worrying about rent. It's a shitty, degrading thing to waste yourself on." She took hold of her own life. "I've spent a lot of my life being very confused and very lonely and separated from any belief I could live a life that was worth living,"she whispers."I see how many people do that and it gets to me,it always has.The situations I was put in,instead of hardening me and making me cynical, gave me greater compassion.Take suicide-it's not caused by one thing,it's an accumulation of little cruelties we inflict on each other,so we go through life hoping nothing happens to us.Not many people feel like taking control, which is unfortunate.I care a lot about that and that's what got me out of the situation I was in." This meant a slacker life. "I sang one night a week and spent the rest doing what I wanted,"she smiles."Surfing.Writing a lot.I love scientific literature, studying the effects of voice on the human body. That's where I found my freedom." In 1994,she signed to Atlantic Records and Pieces Of You was mostly recorded In Neil Young's Broken Arrow studio in Woodside,California. "I wanted the album to be a time capsule,to represent me honestly.I'm not embarrassed by its openess. It has courage and integrity.I though it would only sell 30,000,so it wasn't like I was taking a big risk, like I was going to be this open in front of millions of people. When I wrote it,I was a teenager, struggling with how to live in the world without involving myself in extremes. How to be spiritual and not have to be a hippy or some new ager. We're at a time where we're learning spiritualy, without having to live on mountain-top communes. "When I was 18,life was unbearable,so it made me ask,What do I enjoy doing ? Are dreams hobbies ? Is 'dream' too cliche ? Can I believe in dreams ? It made sense to move from 'I feel fucked up' to 'What are we going to do about it ?' "Several things could have filled my void, but I was just a little better at songwriting than marble carving.Selling four million albums three years later is like a beat-up car winning the Indy 500.It wasn't built for this. It's competing with things that are slick, really cool and high- tech. This is just girl and guitar.I didn't think it was possible,to tell you the truth." Virtually chorus-free,the Tori Amos-like Pieces Of You was received badly. "As I predicted, nothing happened," she remembers."The radio stations said it was unlistenable and over their dead bodies would they play it.It was fine for me-I didn't think I'd exist within what was popular." Atlantic smartly sent the cheap-to-maintain Jewel and her trusty guitar across America. She headlined coffee houses and supported anyone:Pete Murphy,Jeff Buckley,The Ramones, even The Beach Boys. She secured herself a cult following and 14 months after its release,Pieces Of You began to take off. Now,it's been 70 weeks in the American chart and-hooray-she's a star. It's said she's a great beauty of the age. "It's funny how many of us feel moral depravity, don't you think ?" she muses."Through osmosisis,I got a big dose of,like, moral depravity.I've struggled with that, but I try not to play on my sexuality.I love words and turns of phrase-to me,that's sexy. It's easy to believe others are beautiful and much harder to believe you are.I don't know many women who look in the mirror and think they're beautiful. They think,Oh I was beautiful in that picture but I must be an ugly cow today. But at the same time, you are aware of yourself." It's a curse then ? "Yes,but it's hard in my position,"she whines."I can't care about people perceiving me,I can't exist like that.I can't create when I worry about people thinking I'm just a pretty face.I have driven myself nuts. It's tremendous, the burden." Wisely, the first things she did as a star were, a)wear a see-through dress at this year's Grammies ( "It was such a big deal," she puzzles, all Phoebe from Friends."Like, you can't be spiritual and sexy ? "),and b)cop-off with high-profile actor Sean Penn. "It's so insignificant to my music," she snaps (though Penn directs the video to current single,You Were Meant For Me),"that,I kind of,like don't want to talk about it.I find it so silly.I don't have much patience for it.It's disappointing that people continue to focus on it,to talk about it." Shw will not,we may assume,be covering any Madonna songs in the near future. All-in-all,a well-written article, and a lot better than many others that I have read recently. Further on in the magazine, appears the first advert that I have seen in a UK magazine for Pieces Of You.Featuring a great backdrop picture of her,it reads: Jewel,Pieces Of You.....Possessed of a vibrant imagination fuelled by the vastness of the Alaskan wilderness, the musical instincts of a life- long performer, and the courage to cut her own path in life,Jewel embodies a single poetic voice. But if you listen closely enough to PIECES OF YOU,you may well find a piece of yourself lying within the songs. I hope that you enjoyed reading this. -- Richard (the original UK EDA !!!) The bill included Suzanne Vega, Paula Cole, Mary-Chapin Carpenter, Jewel and Sarah McLachlan; among other lesser known artists. Amazingly, most of the acts started very close to their scheduled stage time. Jewel came out around 9:00 p.m. She looked splendid and said she was in a good mood! She came out in a spaghetti straped short sun dress and high strappy sandals. She played her guitar, big blue, for the much of the evening (about 1 hour). I bought a pen and paper to record the set list, but was so blown away by her that I did not even think about writing them down until it was too late. (Sorry Mr. BB!) She opened with: Near You Always (followed by, but not in order; and I may have left one out) Deep Water Little Sister (she asked the audience if they wanted that or Pieces of You which she had started to play and we all yelled Little Sister) Morning Song Down So Long Love Me; Just Leave Me Alone Foolish Games (truly outstanding vocal rendition) Just Passing Time Down Who Will Save Your Soul You Were Meant For Me (did this the slow way; then launched into a rock and roll version without missing a beat) Chime Bells (closed with it; no encore; but did do it faster and faster to the audience's delight) I figured she would not come back out since she had already done Chime Bells and the lights came on immediately letting everyone know not to bother clapping for an encore. Jewel was in really fine voice and her stage presence was commanding. She did not tell as many stories as she usually does, but, of course, the set time was so short and limited due to all the other performers. I was glad I did not try to sneak a camera in; security was very heavy and most people, including myself, were frisked. It being around 103 degrees last evening; there was really no place to hide a camera! Short sets eliminated any indulgences, focusing on the heart of each artist's strengths. Women in the audience outnumbered men by about three to one, but each singer was backed by mostly male band members. What most of these women share is confessional and deeply wrought songwriting, often acoustically based. McLachlan's set included several beat-heavy numbers from "Surfacing," her Arista album due next week --- a contrast to her often-atmospheric work of the past, such as the ballad "Possession." Joking onstage about the bittersweet nature of her material, she's not the typical show-closing artist; she's more introspective than cathartic. Almost a decade after she made her impressive debut, Chapman (along with Vega) is almost an elder stateswoman. Though she began a little too low-key with several acoustic numbers from last year's comeback album, "New Beginning," the bluesy, tougher "Give Me One Reason," followed by an encore of her anthem "Talkin' About a Revolution," drew the liveliest crowd response of the day, bringing many to their feet dancing. THE TWO MOST DYNAMIC PERFORMANCES CAME FROM JEWEL AND COLE. Still stretching her boundaries --- including a provocative look in short shorts and high heels --- Jewel strapped on an electric guitar to rock harder than her best-known acoustic hits, tearing into a version of Patti Smith's "Dancing Barefoot" as well as offering several new songs that recalled the organ-anchored style of 1960s Bob Dylan, not to mention the country-rocker Lone Justice from a decade back. Cole, dressed like a belly dancer, writhing on her toes atop a Persian rug and pounding on the piano, was spellbinding; her short but punchy set was full of tension and release. Vega's voice sounded assured as ever with crafted story-songs laden with snapshot imagery, playing acoustic guitar accompanied only by a bassist. Notable performers on the two smaller stages included jazzy stylings of Cassandra Wilson and the more jagged-cut sounds of Leah Andreone. Running remarkably on time in only its fourth date, Lilith Fair is efficiently run. Outrageously long lines for women's restrooms led to the closing of several men's rooms, though the guys there didn't seem to mind at all. ------------------------------------------------------------ From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Sun Jul 13 01:30:03 1997 Return-Path: Received: by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4) id BAA27876; Sun, 13 Jul 1997 01:28:52 -0400 Message-Id: <199707130528.BAA27876@jane.smoe.org> To: Jewel-News@smoe.org From: rachelleah@hotmail.com Date: 12 Jul 97 12:27:20 -0800 Subject: Jewel News: jewel cybercast Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk content-length: 607 Hi!! These tapes would all be thrown into a bag (the Tape Bag), and everyone would get a random mix tape that would let learn a bit more about another EDA and their taste in music. Since many people can't make the gathering, it was suggested we organize this LIST-WIDE... so we are! Anyone that signs up on the webpage will get a random partner from the list to trade mix tapes with. Remember, the idea of this is not to copy albums, but to get people interested in you & the music you listen to. It would probably be most interesting if you only put on one (or two) songs by any given artist, and none by Jewel. Of course, the tape you make is up to you and should reflect you! There are really no rules other than that. Creativity is recommended in everything (music selection, j-card design, etc.) This is for fun so anyone interested can sign up at... Tonight we finally are launching the Future Folklore tape tree that Alan (MrBB) has been talking about. This email is the first of three that you will receive tonight regarding this tree. The others will have the subjects: 2) Future Folklore Tape Tree: Concept & set lists 3) Future Folklore Tape Tree: sign up now! :) Please do NOT email me now with questions or trying to sign up. Wait until you read all three emails, the instructions on what to do *for now* are in the *third* email. Jewel mailing list tape tree veterans: This tree will be very similar to previous trees I ran before, with one exception....that being a simultaneous 'leaf' & 'branch' call as Eric Montas did with the EDA Cover tape. It's up to you if you want to read the rest of THIS email. *All others*, new folk & the like, PLEASE read the rest of this email. ***************************** HOW THIS TAPE TREE WILL WORK: A tape tree on this list is an organized system used to distribute hard to get music of Jewel (or other artists, as in this Future Folklore series) be it live recordings, cuts from promotional releases, radio interviews and the like etc. The basic structure for this tape tree is that it will be a co-operative effort among many subscribers to the Jewel mailing list. It's goal is to spread the music of the artists on this tape series (or Jewel when doing Jewel trees), at no cost, other than to supply your own blank tapes, a return mailer and return postage. It is done in the EDA spirit that if you can, just maybe you can return the favor some day. If not, so be it. Nutshell version: "seed" makes copies for "branches" who make copies for "leafs" :) *This* tape "tree" will start with a "seed" who has a master copy of the tapes that will be treed. (a two tape set in this case, more on that in the next email: Future Folklore Tape Tree: Concept & set lists). The seed (me, in this case) will send an email to the list recruiting *everyone* who wants a copy of the tapes. The recruits are called "branches" and "leafs" (I use the word "leafs", not "leaves" :) Typically, this email to the list recruiting branches and leafs is called a "branch/leaf call". The branches will be the folks who are volunteering to make copies for others, the leafs. The branches will be making up to ten sets of tapes for leafs. PLEASE remember do NOT email me now! Instructions on what to do will be in the third Email entitled: Future Folklore Tape Tree: sign up now! :) All who want these tapes will reply to that third email according to the instructions in that email. I am expecting anywhere from 200 to 300 people to reply. Some will apply to be branches, many more will apply to be just leafs. (remember, branches will be volunteering to make copies for the leafs) I will choose the number of branches needed based on the overall number of replies. I plan on choosing one branch for every ten replies that want tapes, so the final number of branches will not be known until I get all the replies. Leafs (and branch applicants NOT chosen as branches) will then be assigned to the chosen branches who would make copies for their leaves. The branches will send blank tapes & return postage/mailer to the seed, who makes copies and sends them back. Like-wise, the leafs will send blank tapes & return postage/mailer to their assigned branches, who copies them and mails them back. If you are confused at this moment (I would perhaps be), don't worry, step-by-step instructions on what to do are included in future emails as the tree progesses :) There will be a 4 day sign-up period for this. After that, all EDAs who missed the 'call' will be able to get their tapes from leafs who got tapes. Best wishes! Alan(MrBB) *Repost from June 1997*: I'd like to take this opportunity to explain my new project called "Future Folklore". There's been many great EDA parties around the country. Some of these had incredible entertainment provided by other San Diego area musicians such as The Rugburns, Cindy Lee Berryhill, Elizabeth Hummel & Gregory Page. (All friends of Jewel, by the way) In the case of the Hot Dog Festival (HDF), thrown by the Morales Family in Dana Point CA, Steve & Jeff (aka Stinky) from The Rugburns dropped by & played a short but wonderfully unique set. There's many brand new songs & those who were there can testify it was quite unlike any Rugburns show of late. Shortly after that, an impromptu EDA Cafe (EDAC) was thrown together at The Snyder family's home in Boston MA. Cindy Lee Berryhill & Elizabeth Hummel cancelled a gig in Albany & joined us for an incredible night of music & EDA hilarity. I'm sure Cindy Lee & Elizabeth will agree it was a highlight of their tour. It was certainly the longest gig of the tour! (I'd also like to say that any hard core "Pet Sounds/Smile era Brian Wilson" fans will be absolutely blown away by Cindy Lee's new "keyboard" material. I personally love "Antarctica", "Family Tree","Aquamarine" & "She Won't Even Try" more than any other songs I've heard by anyone this year. I mean it, too!) We plan on distributing (free of charge, of course) the 1st two volumes of a new ongoing tape tree series that will contain all the performances from both of these events. These particular EDA events are becoming legendary & thus the name "Future Folklore"..... These recordings will be different than the elaborate authorized Jewel recordings that we've treed in the past. Both of these events were recorded without the use of a mixing desk & are more reflective of the actual events. The music is still crystal clear but you also hear the EDA interaction (as well as the birds & ocean at HDF!). Tegan Godwin made the "ambiant" HDF recording & its really quite nice & captures some of the spirit of this historically significant EDA gathering. At EDAC Phil Kelnhofer & I collaborated on last minute equipment, but it worked out well. We ran a separate mic on vocals, one on instruments & one on the room so everything was captured clearly. (If any techies are curious about the recording techniques utilized, write to me privately.) It's also important to note that the musicians have all been incredibly generous enough to authorize the release of these recordings for this project. I have two goals for this project: I certainly hope to turn more EDAs on to these other San Diego artists. They can all benefit from our continued support. But more than that, I want to share a little of that "x factor" that happens when EDAs get together. There's something very special going on that I want to see continued. Lovable Lawyer Larry said it best: "We all began as fans of Jewel & then became fans of each other". {snip} These first two volumes of "Future Folklore" will consist of two 90 minute cassettes. This music is really something special. If this is successful, I'm willing to donate my resources to continue this series on an ongoing basis. I'm hoping "Future Folklore" Volumes 1 & 2 will be enthusiastically recieved. If nothing else, I sincerely hope this series will help encourage more events like this in the future. Best wishes, Alan(MrBB) ******************************************************** OK, on to the third email to "ome & get it" entitiled: Future Folklore Tape Tree: sign up now! :) Mike :) From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Mon Jul 14 00:20:26 1997 Return-Path: Received: by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4) id AAA14922; Mon, 14 Jul 1997 00:13:02 -0400 Received: from spectra.net by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4) id AAA14913; Mon, 14 Jul 1997 00:12:48 -0400 Received: from ducksoup.spectra.net (pm179.spectra.net [204.177.130.179]) by spectra.net (8.8.3/8.8.3) with SMTP id AAA01443 for ; Mon, 14 Jul 1997 00:12:41 -0400 Message-Id: <3.0.2.32.19970714001155.0070daa8@spectra.net> X-Sender: ducksoup@spectra.net X-Mailer: QUALCOMM Windows Eudora Pro Version 3.0.2 (32) Date: Mon, 14 Jul 1997 00:11:55 -0400 To: jewel-news@smoe.org From: Mike Connell Subject: Jewel News: Future Folklore Tape Tree: sign up now! :) Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk content-length: 6627 Hi y'all, This email is the third of three that you will receive tonight regarding this tree. The others will have had the subjects: 1) Future Folklore Tape Tree: How this tape tree works 2) Future Folklore Tape Tree: Concept & set lists I recommend you have read the two emails listed above before proceeding with this email. This email is a call to for "branch" volunteers & "leaf" requests for the Future Folklore tape tree. :) Please read every word of this post. Many of you are experienced tape tree "branches" & "leafs". However, many are not and may be totally lost in this. This post is written for their benefit....the new folk. So veterans, please bear with me. This tree will consist of two 90 minute cassette tapes. There will NOT be any DATS, mini-discs or VHS Hi-Fi available of these tapes....standard audio cassettes only. Other than that above, this email will not discuss the tapes at all, or what you'll have to do later. The tapes were discussed in the previous email entitled "Future Folklore Tape Tree: Concept & set lists". This just discusses what you have to do now, if you want these tapes. Note - I will be accepting applications for branches and requests for leafs only up to 6pm EST Thursday night, July 17th. Any email received after that as a branch or leaf request will be denied. (Late emailers can always get copies in the future from EDAs who have the tapes) *************************************** READ THIS IF YOU WANT TO BE A BRANCH: *************************************** To be a branch for this tree you must agree to voluntarily and freely make copies of the two-tape Future Folklore set for up to ten "leafs". The leafs will be the folk who sign up for this tree and *only* want copies. For various reasons, only folks living in the continental United States or Canada will be considered as branches. Anyone living anywhere (even the space station Mir) can be a leaf. NOTE!! - If you know right now that you want to be a LEAF ONLY, then go on below to the section of this email for LEAFS. If you think you may want to apply to be a BRANCH, please read on. :) In addition to what was mentioned above, branches must agree to do and/or have the following: 1) Possess at least one decent quality dual recorder capable of *normal speed dubbing*, OR two decent quality single cassette decks. (We want our branches to have quality equipment, no boom boxes please) 2) Agree to make your master tapes at least a High Grade/High Bias chrome audio cassette. (Maxell XLIIS grade or equivalent as a minimum, NOT XLII) 3) Agree to dub in real time/normal speed. NO high speed dubs allowed. There are other basics for branches that are normal for these sort of things. I will Email them privately to accepted branches. So, if you have the desire to be a branch for these trees, email me. In the SUBJECT of the email, PLEASE put: branch, the state you live in (or Canada, if you live there) It is important that you get this right, it makes it much easier on my end if you do. example *subjects*: branch,New York branch,Washington DC branch,Canada branch,Washington branch,Arizona Please, do not put a 'space' after the comma. Please, NO abbreviations either, spell it all out. In the BODY of your email to me, I'll need your: 1) FULL name 2) Email address 3) Alternate Email address(es) if you have any 4) Postal mailing address 5) Brief description of your TAPING equipment you plan on dubbing with. Just your deck(s), I don't need to know about your receiver etc. *Please include brand, 2 single bay decks or dual deck, approximate cost new, age etc. 6) Any time you will be away in the next 6 weeks and likely unavailable for branch duty during that time. 7) phone number (IF you wish to volunteer that info, it WILL remain confidential. Of course feel free to *not* send it if you wish. Also include good and/or bad times to call) 8) if you intend to use metal tapes 9) anything else at all you want to say When done with your branch application send it to me here at: ducksoup@spectra.net REMEMBER....please put in the subject of your Email to me!: branch, state or country you live in (USA or Canada residents only can apply as a branch please) If you are selected as a branch, you will be notified by me. Please give me up to ten days to respond (it should take less, I just wanna give some "just in case" leeway). If you are NOT selected as a branch, you will be automatically made a leaf for the tree. FYI, please note that for the last tree I ran I had 25 branch openings and received about 72 applications. If you have ANY questions about any of this, feel free to Email me. :) Everyone involved in this project sincerely hopes you enjoy your tapes. ************************************* READ THIS IF YOU WANT TO BE A LEAF: ************************************* if you would just like copies of these tapes, you will have to email me with a leaf request. When I receive your request, I will immediately reply with an email telling you I got your request. Please read it, as it likely will have some more info for you. Again, I will be accepting applications for branches and requests for leafs only up to 6pm EST Thursday night, July 17th. Any email received after that as a branch or leaf request will be denied. (Late emailers can always get copies in the future from EDAs who have the tapes) All I need you to do is to Email me with the SUBJECT (NOT the body) of your email in the following format: leaf, state or country where you live examples: leaf,Alaska leaf,Washington DC leaf,New Zealand leaf,Israel leaf,Canada leaf,New Hampshire leaf,Washington leaf,Guam Please, do not put a 'space' after the comma Please, NO abbreviations either, spell it all out. Jewel recieves the key to the city (of Anchorage) this afternoon. What does this mean? Hmmm. We don't know..... The TIME Magazine cover hits the stands today. A nice (but brief) article, beautiful photos & another article of interest to fans of the various Lilith Fair performers. Most interesting Jewel quote: "People look at me in magazines & feel like I'm a phenonenon, as if what I've accomplished is beyond their ability. I tell them to knock it off. If you respect what I've done, then do something yourself." I hope you folks love the "Future Folklore" tapes & I'd like to publicly thank Mike for taking care of administration on this in my absence. Admission is $10, and is scheduled to begin around 8:00-8:30 pm. The show should be wonderful, as Cindy Lee and Elizabeth are amazing performers. If you would like to attend (oh, please say you will!!!) please RSVP to me at JEWELFAN22@aol.com. If you have already RSVPd, there is no need to do so again! =) I live within a few miles of the Ohio Turnpike (80/90), 24, 475/23, and I-75. There are several hotels within a few miles of my house also. If you would like, you are welcome to crash on the floor, or if the mood fits you, you can camp in my backyard, which actually sounds like a lot of fun!!!!! =) At any rate, I hope that you can attend. It should be A LOT of fun seeing two of my favorite performers in an intimate setting, with my fellow EDAs. Hope to see you there!!!! Cindy Lee Berryhill and Elizabeth Hummel (featured on the Future Folklore tapes) will perform on Salt Spring Island for a Northwest EDA-fest on Friday, August 29 -- that's to kick off the Labor Day Holiday weekend. Salt Spring Island is located in Canada's Gulf Islands, just north of the U.S. San Juan Islands (off the coast of Seattle, Washington), midway between the two British Columbia cities of Vancouver, on the mainland, and Victoria on Vancouver Island. When the Living Room Tour hits the Pacific Northwest, it'll be Indian Summer here on the island -- when the temperatures are mildest, the sunsets most colourful, the evenings long and the night sky filled with constellations that circle round the Jewel of the North star. There are accomodations neraby to suit all tastes and budgets, but since it's a holiday weekend the sooner people decide and let me know their plans, the better chance we have of making sure there's room for everybody. Right now there's plenty of camping, cabins, lodges, a motel, two inns... -- up the road (past the pigs and sheep) there's an amazing hostel that's situated on ten acres of old growth forest with a creek running through the heart of it. The site has three Indian tipis (tepees) that sleep four and a Winnie the Pooh-style tree house to stay in that sleeps two. There's even Eeyore, Piglet, Owl and a honey pot at the bottom of the tree. (The tree-house may end up being the artists' quarters.) You can check out the tree-house and tipis at http://www.beacom.com//ssihostel/hostel.htm The main page of this site is at http://www.beacom.com/ssihostel I've already talked with the owners and, for those that are interested, we'd get members rates of CDN $14 per person per night in the tipis and CDN $20 per person per night in the tree house. (That's about US $10 a night in the tipis and US $15 a night to stay up the tree.) Start thinking about attending on August 29 The Living Room Tour date during Indian Summerstock and please let me know ASAP who wants to come so we can organize everything (rides, carpools, boat schedules, accomodation, contributions/expenses etc. for the artists etc. etc.) Since Salt Spring was home to Tara Maclean when she was discovered singing on a ferry boat, I've invited Tara's fans to join EDAs for this special gathering. We may be few and far between in the Pacific Northwest but here's a rare opportunity to get together in a beautiful, natural, surrounding and enjoy the music of Cindy Lee Berryhill and Elizabeth Hummel. RSVP to howenow@imagen.net as soon as you can! Thanks. Directions & lodging/camping info will be organized and forwarded to all to make life easier. Look forward to seeing you all here! Finally, The T-Shirt Guy (tm) has returned with a new, better than ever "Official" EDA T-Shirt. Last year, the Everyday Angels wanted to make a shirt so we could easily spot each other at concerts. Designs were submitted, idea were exchanged. I became The T-Shirt Guy (tm) and was in charge of the project. Then the EDA world was turned upside-down with the announcement of JewelStock. The JS shirt satisfied the need and the EDA shirt was put aside. People never forgot, however, and have been asking me when was I going to finish the EDA shirt. Well, now I have my act together and a new design (which has Jewel and Lenedra's blessing) and I am ready to make the shirt available to the list. The shirt can be viewed and ordered over the web at http://www.cybercom.net/~pjk/EDA (I should have a couple alternative sites up soon if in case there are any more problems with my server) or if you do not have web access simply email at this address for all the information on the shirt (design, ordering, etc.). If you would also like a jpeg of the design just ask. If you have any questions feel free to email me. Hi everyone! Sunday night we finally launched the Future Folklore tape tree that Alan (MrBB) had been talking about. If you are confused at this moment (I would perhaps be), don't worry, step-by-step instructions on what to do are included in future emails as the tree progesses :) There are about 2 days left to sign up for this (Thursday deadline) . After that, all EDAs who missed the 'call' will be able to get their tapes from leafs who got tapes. OK, on to the next Email: Future Folklore Tape Tree: Concept & set lists Mike :) From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Tue Jul 15 18:40:47 1997 Return-Path: Received: by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4) id SAA05097; Tue, 15 Jul 1997 18:39:44 -0400 Received: from spectra.net by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4) id SAA05084; Tue, 15 Jul 1997 18:39:30 -0400 Received: from ducksoup.spectra.net (pm88-131.spectra.net [204.177.131.88]) by spectra.net (8.8.3/8.8.3) with SMTP id SAA20875 for ; Tue, 15 Jul 1997 18:39:44 -0400 Message-Id: <3.0.2.32.19970715183806.006a21d0@spectra.net> X-Sender: ducksoup@spectra.net X-Mailer: QUALCOMM Windows Eudora Pro Version 3.0.2 (32) Date: Tue, 15 Jul 1997 18:38:06 -0400 To: jewel-news@smoe.org From: Mike Connell Subject: Jewel News: Future Folklore Tape Tree: Concept & set lists - REPOST Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk content-length: 7360 This is a slightly edited repost from Sunday night's post. Hi y'all: This email is the second of three that you will receive tonight regarding this tree. Wait until you read all three emails, the instructions on what to do for now are in the *third* email. These two tapes are of events that happened at two amazing EDA (list member) gatherings this spring. They were recorded by EDAs on high quality equipment and then the idea to tree them out ballooned into reality :) Along with this tree is the concept of future tape trees of this series, due to the up coming Living Room Tour by Cindy Lee Berryhill and Elizabeth Hummel at EDA homes across the US of A. Who knows what this will develop into? After the listing of what is on the tapes will be excerpts of Alan's (MrBB) recent post on this tape tree, it best explains the future of this series. Mike will be posting sign-up instructions this weekend & I hope all who do sign up enjoy the tapes. (Please do not reply to me & keep an eye out for Mike's free sign up instructions later this week end) What follows is a repost of the info explaining what the "Future Folklore" tapes are. Best wishes, Alan(MrBB) ******************************************************** OK, on to the third email to "come & get it" entitiled: Future Folklore Tape Tree: sign up now! :) Mike :) From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Tue Jul 15 18:45:46 1997 Return-Path: Received: by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4) id SAA05317; Tue, 15 Jul 1997 18:44:39 -0400 Date: Tue, 15 Jul 1997 18:44:39 -0400 Message-Id: <199707152244.SAA05317@jane.smoe.org> Received: from nohar.rcinet.com (nohar.rcinet.com [157.134.207.6]) by dmapub.dma.org (8.8.5/8.8.5) with ESMTP id QAA07112; Tue, 15 Jul 1997 16:58:15 -0400 Received: (from smap@localhost) by nohar.rcinet.com (8.8.5/8.8.5) id QAA25628; Tue, 15 Jul 1997 16:58:15 -0400 (EDT) Received: from shore.shore.net(192.233.85.136) by nohar.rcinet.com via smap (V2.0beta) id xma025625; Tue, 15 Jul 97 16:58:13 -0400 Received: from jane.smoe.org (smoe.org [204.167.97.154]) by shore.shore.net (8.8.3/8.8.2) with SMTP id QAA01584; Tue, 15 Jul 1997 16:55:48 -0400 (EDT) Received: from localhost by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4) id QAA02201; Tue, 15 Jul 1997 16:56:35 -0400 Received: by jane.smoe.org (bulk_mailer v1.5); Tue, 15 Jul 1997 16:56:31 -0400 Received: by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4) id QAA02115; Tue, 15 Jul 1997 16:54:37 -0400 Received: from easynet.co.uk by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4) id QAA02100; Tue, 15 Jul 1997 16:54:15 -0400 Received: (qmail 28051 invoked from network); 15 Jul 1997 20:54:49 -0000 Received: from cmgroves.easynet.co.uk (193.131.249.192) by kiwi.easynet.co.uk with SMTP; 15 Jul 1997 20:54:49 -0000 From: Chris Groves Subject: Jewel News: New Pieces Of You CD Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Apparently-To: jewel-news-outgoing content-length: 749 I bought a second copy of Pieces of You today, since it appears to have been re-released in the UK, and my original copy is getting a bit worn, and the CD booklet cover has been scribbled on by Miss Kilcher. Anyway, when I got it home to play I noticed it was different to my original. The CD label is completely blue, the original is silver and blue with a picture of Jewel, from the waist upwards, jumping in the air. Also the duration of the CD is slightly shorter 58:32 as opposed to 58:55. It appears that this is due to the single version of YWMFM having replaced the original album version. Hi y'all, This email is the third of three that you will receive tonight regarding this tree. In the BODY of the email AT LEAST tell me your FULL NAME and if you intend to send METAL tapes to your branch, tell me that too. I do not need to know your postal mailing address. Your branch will later, so you can email it then to him/her at that time. Remember, please get the SUBJECT of your Email to me right. :) It will help immensely. Lilith Fair - a traveling festival featuring female folk-pop stars - is rocking the music world. By Christopher John Farley Summer in America, a time for blood-drenched, dumbed-down action- adventure movies high on corpses, dinosaurs and extraterrestrials, but low on heart. Summer in America. Turn on the TV and watch your tobacco-chawing interleague baseball games; lay down your $49.95 and catch a championship-boxing match complete with an outrageous ear-chewing incident. Summer in America. Also a season for music: strutting macho megatours; draining weekend-long rock festivals; sweaty dance clubs throbbing with testosterone-filled techno. Dial up Ticketmaster; go to an outdoor alternative-rock show in a field, in a stadium; see the teeming, churning mosh pits, the muscular bare-chested frat boys, the sharp, scabbed elbows, the clomping Reeboked feet, the choking clouds of dust obscuring the stage...What is summer were different? What is the hottest season of the year flexed a bit less and cared a bit more? What if the months of July and August, at least when it comes to music, were a tad more feminine and a bit more feminist? What was it that Virginia Woolf wrote back in 1929? " A woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction." Might the same be true of pop music? This summer female pop stars are clearing out space for themselves, and the season's usual sea of masculinity is parting. The debut CD by Alaskan pop-folkie Jewel, 'Pieces of You' (Atlantic), has sold more than 5 million copies and is still riding high on the charts. Erykah Badu, with her poetry-slam soulfulness, has sold more than 1 million copies of her brilliant new CD 'Baduizm' (Kedar Entertainment/Universal) and is a headliner on this summer's neo-soul Smokin' Grooves Tour. And Canadian singer-songwriter Sarah McLachlan has masterminded the summer's most talked-about musical event: Lilith Fair, a traveling show featuring a rotating lineup of 61 female singer-songwriters, including Cassandra Wilson, Tracy Chapman, Fiona Apple, Paula Cole, Jewel and McLachlan herself. There's a different melody in the air: macho is out; empathy is in. "People really want to be given hope," says Atlantic Records senior vice president Ron Shapiro, "and these female artists are giving young people a life preserver." Call the new sound coffeehouse pop. It has a comforting warmth, a topping of sugary froth, and it provides a kind of buzz, like sipping a cappuccino in a corner cafe. It is led, mostly, by female singer-songwriters, writing primarily from a feminine point of view. On her hit song 'Bitch', Meredith Brooks declares she wants to "reclaim a word that had taken on a really derogatory meaning." But ideology or no, these women are unafraid to celebrate their own sensuality. On the inside flap of her album, Jewel poses in a sexy yellow swimsuit. This new music has the vigor of youth - McLachlan is 29, Jewel just 23 - and yet it echoes with sounds of three decades past: the crisp emotionality of Joni Mitchell, the artful lyrics of Bob Dylan. While rooted in acousitc folk, it draws freely on blues, jazz and even hip-hop. "There's no such thing necessarily as a folk song or pop song," says jazz singer Wilson. "What it is is not as important as how you do it, and how you do it is not as important as why." Coffeehouse pop is gentle but not tame - there is a quiescent anger within it over social issues and matters of the heart. The songs seek to engage life, not shrink from it. "There was an innocence that prevailed in the 60's that was crushed by the assassination of J.F.K. and King," says Jewel. "Our parents have become disillusioned. It is their disillusionment that we deal with in many ways; it's a kind of crust we have to break through." In the title song on 'Pieces of You', Jewel attacks religious and sexual intolerance, her voice breaking as she sings "You say he's a faggot . Are you afraid you're just the same?"; on of Chapman's newest songs is titled 'The Rape of the World.' But unlike alternative rock, this music is less about stoking cynicism and provoking anger as it is about overcoming both. This is healing music, devoid of irony and flush with optimism and unabashed emotion. "Apathy is boring," says Cole. "It takes real courage to have hope." This is music that wants to feel, no matter how much it hurts. Says Jewel: "People are hungry for emotiveness. They want bare honesty, emotional blood-and-bone honesty." The Lilith Fair, which kicked off July 5 in George, Wash., and will play 29 more cities in the U.S. and Canada over the next two months, is a coming-out party for the new sound, a chance for this generation of female singer-songwriters to meet and greet each other, jam onstage together, share audiences, and perhaps, start a folk-pop revolution. It should be noted, though, that some of the recent talk about a surge in "women's music" could be seen as a veiled slur. The music women make is too varied for a single category and the mediagenic notion of some sort of "female sound" could turn into a kind of velvet prison. Women, of course, have been major players in music throughout the rock era, so the idea that gals with guitars is something new is an insult to such folk-pop pioneers as Odetta and Joan Baez. The number of women at the top of the charts of late, however, and the impressive number of those who are playing Lilith is indeed something fresh and invigorating. "Of all the tours that you do during the summer," says Fiona Apple, "this is pretty much the coolest one." The opening show in George's scenic Gorge Amphitheater was proof of that. It was an intimate extravaganza - with condom giveaways and information booths on issues like rape and reproductive rights - and the performances began with a hush and built to a dreamy sigh. Lilith offers the audience three stages, in separate locations, of gradually descending size and occupied by performers at staggered time intervals. McLachlan was the first act up, playing a spare, unassuming set by herself, holding only her acoustic guitar, on the third and smallest stage, which was about the size of a tollbooth. Cassandra Wilson, on the medium-size second stage later in the day, was the Fair's most disarming delight - her smart, laughing, 30-minute set began with a few dozen people watching, but ended with several hundred, who gave her a standing ovation. Jewel, on the first and largest stage, was the high point. On record, her voice sometimes has a tepid blond wispiness; in concert, it has a crackling, sparks-flying, campfire warmth. Finally McLachlan, with her full band, appeared on the first stage to close out the day with a serene set that shimmered like twilight. How does that Joni Mitchell song go? "I've looked at life from both sides now..." McLachlan has certainly seen both sides in the music business. As the Founding Mother of Lilith - and the only performer playing every date - she is sure to win a wide new audience for her lush, thoughtful songcraft. Her new CD, 'Surfacing' (Arista), out this week, is an elegant, old-soul album, with several standout songs, including the bewitching 'Building a Mystery' and the ravishing 'Adia'. Radio is already all over it. But not too long ago, McLachlan couldn't buy airplay. "When my album 'Fumbling Towards Ecstasy' cam out [in 1994], a lot of radio stations said they couldn't play me because they already had another singer-songwriter on their playlist," McLachlan says. "In this case it was Tori Amos. That was very marginalizing because our music is completely different. They were saying, 'Go away - we've added our token female this week.'" This Alanis Morissette hit. Fifteen million copies sold. Next came Jewel. More than 70 weeks on 'Billboard' charts and still going. And McLachlan's own album 'Fumbling' ended up going double platinum. Says Atlantic Records co-chairman Val Azzoli: "Honestly, we in the record business are not leaders. We are a bunch of sheep. When one kind of record does well, we all follow with more like it." Danny Goldberg, the current CEO of Mercury Records, who signed Jewel to Atlantic before leaving that label, says there's a major musical shift under way. "I associate it with generations of high school students coming along who want ownership of their own culture, who want something different from the people who came before them," says Goldberg, who in the past managed Bonnie Raitt and Nirvana's Kurt Cobain. "So this group is going for a female-leaning, optimistic music, in contrast to the grunge, gagsta-rap chapter that is waning." The rise of Jewel and other female singer-songwriters has come hand in hand with the growth of a whole new generation-spanning radio format known in the music industry as "modern adult contemporary." Modern AC focuses on acts that are adult friendly but still cool, performers with a folkie feel, such as Counting Crows, Blues Traveler, Sister Hazel and the Wallflowers. The format also tends to feature female singer-songwriters such as Indigo Girls, Shawn Colvin and Jewel - all of whom just happen to be on the Lilith tour. "The blossoming of modern AC was so important," says Terry McBride, who manages McLachlan. "Artists like Sarah, Fiona and Jewel have always been at the bottom of playlists, but about 14 months ago, we started getting some attention. It helped us to get the exposure we needed to be able to put on a Lilith. It's helped all these artists get to the next step up." The format has a special appeal to female listeners: it allows them to hear someone like themselves instead of, say, someone like Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder. And record companies like it because women tend to buy more records then men. "Years ago, there used to be a stigma held by rock-radio programmers against playing too many female artists," says Bob Waugh, assistant programming director at moder-rock radio station WHFS in Washington. "Now there has been such an explosion of female artists and female-led bands coming to prominence that the perception has changed." And Lilith Fair should change it even more. McLachlan, in conceiving the event, drew inspiration from the proto-feminist Hebrew legend of Lilith, Adam's first wife. Unlike Eve, Lilith was not spawned from Adam's rib but was created by God out of dust, just as Adam was. But as soon as Lilith and Adam were joined together, they began to quarrel. Adam said: "It is your duty to obey me." Lilith replied, "We are both equal...and I will not be submissive to you." Set that last quote to music and you'd have a fitting anthem for Lilith Fair. McLachlan tried out the concept of an all-female tour on four test dates last year, expanding the idea this summer. "There wasn't necessarily a theme we were looking for, but we all wanted a diverse show," she says. "So we made sure to get people like Cassandra Wilson, who is totally doing her own thing with jazz and folk." Wilson is happy to be involved. "The vibe that I bring to this is the voice of free black women," she says. "Black women who are confident, sure of themselves in their sexuality, confident in their spirituality." Yet more black artists deserve to be on Lilith's bill. Lilith organizers say they tried to reach out; Erykah Badu was offered a slot on the tour but turned it down. On the other hand, Laura Love, a black, folk-tinged, Seattle-based singer-songwriter with a fine new album, 'Octoroom', asked to be part of Lilith and was passed over (the organizers say that with 584 submissions, they couldn't take everybody). Still, Lilith is a welcome development. Right now, pop music is flaccid. The prefab hype of Spice Girls, the sugar-shock kiddie ditties of Hanson, the admirable wholesomeness but inexcusable tiresomeness of Bob Carlisle, the horrific power screeching of Celine Dion - turn it off. Turn it all off. It's meaningless olestra music, artificial and nutrient-free. The Lilith tour and the coffeehouse-pop crowd can help halt pop's garbage-chute slide. Such music, on the surface, is gentle enough to slip onto radio playlists, but down deep there are ideas, there is emotion, there is life: the haunting, melancholic feel of McLachlan's new tune 'Angel'; Fiona Apple exploring her post-rape trauma on her heart-rending 'Sullen Girl'; Erykah Badu imagining the life of a gangsta's girlfriend on her soulful 'Otherside of the Game'. Other promising acts from this school are on the way. An advance copy of British trip-hop folkie Pauline Taylor's just finished album indicates she is a blazing talent; Austin, Texas-based singer-songwriter Kacy Crowley is another one to watch, judging by an early listen to her confident debut, 'Anchorless'; and Chantal Kreviazuk's just out 'Under These Rocks and Stones' is also a charmer. Perhaps someday we'll see Taylor, Crowley or Kreviazuk at Lilith. McLachlan wants the tour to become an annual event; she even foresees a day when men are invited. (One of this year's bands, the Cardigans, has men, but the lead singer is a woman.) Says McLachlan: "We hope this will pave the way for more female performers. We hope it's a great thing for young women too. When I was growing up, we had very few role models to look up to. This is a great example of strong women out there doing something they love, doing something really positive." Lilith Fair is already doing something positive for the summer concert business, which was in the doldrums. Tickets for Lilith, which cost between $12.50 and $46, are going fast in most of the remaining cities and in some cases are already gone. The first week of shows were all sellouts. What was that line Virginia Woolf wrote in 'A Room of One's Own'? "I should remind you how much depends on you, and what influence you can exert upon the future." At Lilith you can sense the summer shifting, the musical center moving. Said 18-year-old fairgoer Cindy Chen of Seattle: "I don't like [alternative rock]. Too much moshing and men throwing themselves around. It's dangerous." Lilith, at the show in George, proved to be a safe, sacred spot. Here were teenage girls in cutoff jeans and bikini tops, middle aged moms in baggy T shirts and running shoes. Here a woman breast-fed her baby during Jewel's set; here fans sat dead quiet, 'listening' to the lyrics. Here a woman wore a T shirt marked "dyke" with a parodic Nike swoosh, while two other women walked comfortably hand in hand. Here a man in a concession-stand line talked excitedly about Sarah McLachlan's song-writing skills. Said Shellie Knawa, 30, a Seattle computer-manual writers: "This is finally a chance for our voice, women, to be heard." It's still summer. But the season's a-changin'. --With reporting by David E. Gorgeous blondes, of course. All right, that isn't exactly fair: The July 21, 1997 covers of the two major weelies allegedly use curvaceous female celebs not for their own sakes, but to illlustrate "trend" stories. (Both trends, it should be noted, already have long silvery beards.) {cut} Time magazine's cover concerns the nation's alleged embrace of sensitive female singer-songwriters; titled "Jewel and the Gang," it sports a lustrous close-up of the recently famous, one-named folkie, eyes shining, lip gloss glistening. {cut} Jewel, though rising in popularity, is too new and unformed a talent to justify this sort of exposure, and the accompanying "trend" story, which features Sarah McLachlan, Fiona Apple, Meredith Brooks, Cassandra Wilson and other participants in the Lilith Fair folk-rock tour, is riddled with caveats that suggest writer Christopher John Farley didn't quite believe his assignment deserved cover play. We always seem to get the last litte remnants of any hurricane that rips through the southeastern part of the US. I know I promised details for yesterday, but I haven't been home in a couple of days due to the rain (Sugarfoot (my car) tends to hydroplane when it drizzles...so with all the storms she's been a real bitch to drive) and I haven't been able t get to a computer either. ( I worked a double at the "B and B" in Buckhead (BTW if you can afford $85 to $105 a night you should stay there for the fair...shameless plug alert!!!) so I'm coming drowsily off a 16 hour shift (11pm to 3pm)) So, here's the deal. As you may have read on an earlier post from Rusty we are meeting at Felini's Pizza on Howell Mill Rd at 12:00 noon on the day of the fair. If you cannot make it at noon RSVP by next Tuesday to my account or to up until the day before the show and we will hold a place for you at the restaraunt. In the subject of the email write "Felini's" in the body of the email write 1)your name 2) where you are coming from, and 3) if you will join the EDA's at Felini's. Also include 4)the time you will be there if it differs from 12. With this information I can call Felinis' ahead of time and give them some warning about a group reservation. Also, the check for the pizza and a coke usually runs around $5 dollars. We can decide when we get there if we want to order whole pizzas together or by the slice. Any questions can me mailed to myself at or Rusty at . Directions to be posted this weekend. Can wait to meet all of ya! Jennifer P.S. It looks good for Jewel to be featured as the musical guest on Austin City Limits on August 5th. This is a great show & is usually a full hour of music. This is not yet confirmed & it may take place on the 4th. Details are still being worked on. Jewel has been invited to perform again on Saturday Night Live on September 27th. Barring conflict with the first Japan Tour dates, this will likely happen. Regarding the rumored "movie deal". Jewel did recently meet with both Stephen Spielberg & Woody Allen. Both meetings went extremely well. However, her schedule prevented her from accepting anything yet. The meetings are primarily to help her get acquainted with the people and process. When the time and the part is right she will accept a role. More news as I get it. (No idea how this would effect Jewel-news, but 99% of the posts to Jewel-news come from Jewel@smoe.org) Some of you may have read a bit on this in an email earlier this evening from Jeff Wasilko. He's the guy that owns the three Jewel lists. They run on his hardware and he pays the bills. I just run two of them on a day-to-day basis. (There's A LOT of work involved for both of us though) I am not at this time going to go into the many reasons WHY this list is in danger of shutting down. Just believe me that it is. Also, some changes do have to be made, and they are mostly basic. I'll get into those, and the reasons why this danger of folding exists in a post within a few days. (One hint though, the *quantity* of daily emails to Jewel@smoe.org HAS to come down.....HAS TO) OK DOWN TO BUSINESS - let's START to save this list NOW :) Jeff Wasilko owns the list as I said. In four separate Emails tonight, one to the list, three to other list members and CC'd to me, Jeff said: 1) "It's shenanigans like that which give me a good reason to accidentally delete the list." 2) "I don't see why the list should exist if bad things like this come out of it." 3) "Given the current situatuation, I'm seeing little alternative to shutting the list down." 4) "I'd like to put the group on notice that this list is within an inch of losing a home." For reasons I won't get into, Jeff is a much busier man these days than in the recent past. He doesn't have the time to deal with a lot of the stuff he used to. (I and a few others have been helping him in this situation) On top of that, he hasn't subscribed to THIS Jewel list for quite a while now. Because of that, he no longer sees *first hand* the GOOD in this list, the family feeling we have, the need we have for each other, the joy many of us get out of this list, how we do like to discuss the main topic of this list....that pretty blonde singer....what's her name?.....oh, yeah....Jewel :) Since he isn't 'visible' either (not making many posts to the list), many don't even know he exists. Thus, most of his list related emails are either complaints or emails enlightening him of list situations that can only cause him further frustrations with this list. So, this is what I want to do to START to save this list. (There is more we'll have to do later) I want EVERY ONE OF YOU who wants to save this list to send ME a private email on what you love about this list and why you want it to continue. Send them here to DuckSoup@spectra.net. You can also say anything to Jeff in this email that you want because I am going to PRINT OUT every one of them and send them to Jeff so he can read them. I do NOT want to send *emails* TO him. He has to read emails at a terminal. I want him to have a booklet to take with him anywhere he wants to to read them...to be able to easily re-read any if he so wishes...to see how many folks would be disappointed should this list fold. Please do NOT send these Emails to the list. These will be private to Jeff and besides, as I said above, the *quantity* of emails to this list HAS to come down. This is a good time to start that trend. Please do this one of two ways, either just hit the ol' reply button/command and write what you want to say and send it, or make the SUBJECT of the email: SAVE THE LIST Either way it will be easier for me to deal with the deluge of email I hope to get :) I love this list and what it has brought to me and many of you, friendships. Jewel loves it to. The fact that she gave THIS LIST Jewelstock and the tapes of that concert, plus other material to trade freely amongst ourselves, exemplifies that. Let's keep it alive :) Email me why you want to save it. Forever your friend, forever your fellow list member/EDA, Mike :) P.S. Due to this latest list 'crisis', I am going to focus my efforts on this "save the list" campaign, so the progress of the Future Folklore tape tree is now on the back burners. P.P.S. Many of you will get multiple copies of this email (2 or 3). For that I apologize, but it had to be done to ensure getting individual copies to everyone on the three versions of the Jewel mailing lists. **** The Jewel Mailing List Netiquette & New Member Guide is at: http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup Patty Griffin Tour Dates & more is at: http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup/pattyg/patttour.htm Ducksoup@spectra.net DuckofPrey@aol.com From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Mon Jul 28 02:09:12 1997 Return-Path: Received: by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4-jewelq-jane) id CAA27519; Mon, 28 Jul 1997 02:07:32 -0400 Message-Id: <199707280607.CAA27519@jane.smoe.org> To: Jewel-News@smoe.org From: ducksoup@spectra.net Date: 27 Jul 97 13:17:56 -0800 Subject: Jewel News: Re: Posters (where to find Jewel posters) Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk content-length: 889 Just a followup here. While I mentioned that used CD stores and shows are good places to find Jewel posters and such, there ARE things going on now in the planning stages for Jewel merchandise to be available through the normal channels....regular music/CD stores and the like. (Items being considered are the basic stuff you see for many other artists, perhaps a few unique items too) >From what I have been told by Bibi, I would expect stuff to start showing up in the late fall to early 1998. (Things ALWAYS get delayed, so 1998 wouldn't surprise me) On the other hand, I wouldn't be surprised though to see things alot sooner either. Her response was indescisive, but the gist was "I won't be in the studio again until February, I'll be touring until then." I guess this means that she will be doing considerable re-recording. She did mention the enormous "time-gap" between albums and said she does "hope there is no more singles" with a grimace on her face. =) Crunch! The Unplugged material will likely see release anyway (with non-broadcast tracks &) in far better quality. My advice is to get the material free from your friends on the list for now. The JS tracks on the disc are simply taken from a cassette & the rest is from a VCR MTV tape so its not any better & ridiculously expensive.... as all ripoffs tend to be...... Although 2 tracks from the Jewelstock tapes have been illegally bootlegged, this does not mean the end of EDAs respecting Jewel & Lenedra's wishes. Please continue to respect their wishes & keep these tapes in the hands of list members only. The interview appears to have taken place the day before Jewel received the keys to the city of Anchorage. There are also two photos, one 3/4 page colour and the other a small black and white. The following are a few brief extracts that I found amusing... Tomorrow she is due at the Mayor's office to be presented the keys to the city, an award slightly less prestigious than being granted a year's free parking tokens. But from the no-bullshit glint in her eyes she may well be planning to piss on this particular parade. "I don't really like very much about Anchorage to be honest with you." she grins through the crooked lower teeth that have graced every magazine cover from Rolling Stone to Which Crooked Lower Teeth?. A girl who now lives in relative luxury in San Diego and finds walking down the street more of a chore than slaving over a hot udder for hours on end. [...] and has become the biggest Stateside phenomenom since crap beer. All without you ever having heard of her. Jewel grimaces at your correspondent as if he'd just served up her pet terrapin in a quiche. Alanis may have the warble, Liz Phair may have the balls (Errr... - Biology Ed), Tori Amos may have the nutter factor and Joan Osborne may have the um, interesting hair, but Jewel has the vulnerabilty, backed with a melodic clout that could stop an encroaching Chinese Army in its tracks. Haven't you even got any stories about vomiting on Bob Dylan, or something? "Y'know, I cannot vomit," Jewel laughs. "It's very hard for me to vomit even when I'm really sick. I've never had a talent for it." Chris. Review: I'll never go to another concert at this venue again, it was so bad, it ruined the night for me. They oversold and because of the major traffic jam getting in, we were relegated to lawn seats so far back there was a HILL blocking the stage. It also will probably be the only concert I'll ever be to that wasn't loud enough. I had to cup my ears to hear the music. Jewel's generally quiet (but excellent) set didn't help. (Atlantic 82700-1) The 5 bonus tracks are convienently located together on side four. The 1st track is "Emily" & its the version from The Crossing Guard. Followed by "Rocker Girl" from the Phyllis Barnabee Promo. THEN is an unbelievably beautiful version of "Everything Breaks". It's a new studio version, just Jewel & acoustic guitar. (And complete verses) Next is "Cold Song" also from Phyllis Barnabee. Finally is a new take of "Angel Needs A Ride". This is also very nice & NOT the version on the Saint Doug CD. Its slower in tempo & considerably longer. This is also just Jewel & acoustic guitar as is the entire side. The packaging is basically the same as the CD but larger of course & its a nice gatefold cover. A lyric & credit sheet is also included. MrBB
