These booklets contain poetry, writing, vintage & recent photos as well as info about the tour itself. They are 14 pages in length including front & back cover. They were designed by Jewel's assistant & close friend BiBi Bielat. Here's the instructions. Please follow them EXACTLY in order for this to be as easy as possible for us. Cost of the booklets are $10 in American dollars. (same as at the shows) All booklets will be sent 1st class unless you want & pay for Priority mail. All you need to do is send me a standard size manilla envelope (9.5" x 13") that is self adressed & with at least $1.50 in stamps already on it. (Note: DO NOT use postal meter postage! Only stamps. Add an extra 32 cent stamp for each extra booklet ordered up to 5 booklets.) Include $10 cash (NO CHECKS)or money order for each booklet ordered. We will simply put however many booklets you paid for in the envelope & send it back to you. Its that easy. If you want the booklets faster, you can send a Priority mailer with a $3 stamp on it instead of a manilla envelope with $1.50 on it. If you want more than 5 of them, please use a Priority mailer--I can fit up to ten of them in there. Send your self adressed pre-postaged 9.5" x 13" manilla envelope, with $10 cash (or a $10 money order made out to Alan Bershaw) for each booklet ordered to: Jewel Tour Book c/o MrBB P.O. Box 8147 Berlin,CT 06037-8147 Note: If you prefer to send a money order, thats OK. Just make sure its made out to me. (Do not make it out to Jewel or anyone else!). I will be sending Lenedra a bank check for all booklets ordered & if I cannot personally cash your money order, then I cannot send the booklet & must return your order. There's less than 100 left presently. I'll keep the list posted if it looks like they'll sell out to prevent having to return any requests. Remember, Amyjo & I volunteered to do this because so many EDAs requested it. Follow the simple instructions. I know this will be painless if you do. :-) Best wishes, Alan(MrBB) From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Sat May 3 13:50:41 1997 Return-Path: Received: by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4) id NAA28389; Sat, 3 May 1997 13:50:41 -0400 Message-Id: <199705031750.NAA28389@jane.smoe.org> Date: Sat, 03 May 1997 09:52:13 -0400 From: Crash Boy To: jewel-news@smoe.org Subject: Jewel News: Jewel Unplugged tickets Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk content-length: 776 hi guys. i haven't seen anyone post about this, so i thought that i'd spread the word. :) it turns out that K-Rock, WXRK 92.3 here in the new york city area is giving away the unplugged tickets. this is the same station that howard stern operates from. they'll have random contests for the 92nd caller all weekend, and special "bonus hours" where anyone that can get through to the station that hour will receive tickets. the number for the station is 1-888-434-1997. and this is all weekend. and the contest is for three unplugged shows. jewel, fiona apple, and the wallflowers. when you win tickets, you get to chose which of the three you want to see. i guess it's obvious which one i'll pick if i get through. :) hope that helps everyone out. There have been rumors that there will be a Jewel track on the Batman & Robin Soundtrack this summer, along with another Clueless Soundtrack, possibly with "All By Myself." The new album from Jewel, although subject to change, is targeted for early 1998. Jewel will re-mix and shoot a video for the next single, "Foolish Games" sometime in June. ChartWatch: "You Were Meant For Me" checked in at #2 on Billboard, #1 on Caseys', #12 on the Internet 50, #1 on Rick Dee's Top 40, #1 on VH1 and #1 on BOTH of R&R's charts. "Pieces of You" came in at #7 on the Billboard 200 Album Chart and #9 on Internet Votes. Other radio stats had YWMFM played over 3200 times across the country. I've assured the people involved that I can have them waiting for her upon her return from Europe as a "welcome home" kinda thing. As far as I know, one EDA may still be able to deliver them in Cologne, but if not, it won't be a problem because: Jewel will not be going without an actual EDA gift on her birthday. Thanks to the incredible thoughtfulness & generosity of EDA Gerry Lipnowski, Jewel will be getting something unique & incredible on her birthday from ALL the EDAs. Since Gerry took the initiative & cost to aquire this gift, I want him to tell you all about it when he gets back from Israel in about a week. I can tell you that it will definately blow everybody's minds--especially Jewel's!! EDA Amy Nuefeld also designed a beautiful hand water colored card from ALL the EDAs that will accompany Gerry's surprise which is also being given in the name of ALL the EDAs. I also enclosed a personal message detailing all the things we're doing (EDAF,JPK Fund, Raffle, Blood drive, Gatherings, Hot Dog Fest & Berryhill/Hummelfest) so she'll be aware of it all on her birthday. I've already given these things to Lenedra & she will personally deliver them in Cologne Germany on Jewel's birthday. :-) Adam & I will display these very special birthday gifts on the "Pieces Of Jewel" website, so everyone will be able to see the card & gift when the time comes. PLEASE before anyone gets in a huff about why any of this was done without total EDA involvement, I suggest you patiently wait & see the results for yourself! I personally guarantee that each & every one of you will be very proud to be included in this particular gift. These things were done on behalf of ALL the EDAs & I assure you, Jewel will be extremely touched. Lenedra has already told me so! We're down to about 80 booklets left. If you want one still, please get your orders in. When these are gone, theyre gone & will not be printed again. You'll be happy to know that this project has already raised over $800 toward the JPK Fund. All the best, Alan(MrBB) Heres instructions again if you want to place an order: 70% of total EDA List sales of these booklets will be donated to the JPK Fund on behalf of Jewel & The EDA Foundation. :-) For more JPK Fund info go to: http://www.endor.org/jpk/ If you are Canadian, please contact: Gerry Lipnowski at: glipnows@qc.bell.ca If you are outside North America, please contact Terrence Williams at: thespis@thespis.com If you live in the USA or simply want to know more, read on: Hi to all USA EDAs that would like to aquire Jewel's "Tiny Lights Tour '97" booklets that were sold during Jewel's recent tour. Send your self adressed pre-postaged 9.5" x 13" manilla envelope, with $10 cash (or a $10 money order made out to Alan Bershaw) for each booklet ordered to: Jewel Tour Book c/o MrBB P.O. I will be sending Lenedra a bank check for all booklets ordered & if I cannot personally cash your money order, then I cannot send the booklet & must return your order. There's less than 80 left presently. I'll keep the list posted if it looks like they'll sell out to prevent having to return any requests. Its far from finished, but since I've been bombarded with many questions since the RS article & the FAQ is ridiculously out of date, I've decided to post whats been done so far in "very rough draft" form. (Quite a bit is purposely left out because I've yet to confirm accuracy on other parts of it.) I want to aknowledge Neal Copperman & Jeff Hanson who began writing this early Jewel history a few years ago. Among other information they provided, both were regulars at The Innerchange, so they are able to tell about it first hand. Their previous work was sent out in the FAQ & that was the basis on which this developed. I hope this helps all the new people & I know theres a few things even the most dedicated fans didn't know, so I hope you all find it somewhat educational. Again, forgive my lame writing style. This is simply a rough draft. Enjoy! Alan(MrBB) What happened prior to "Pieces Of You"? (a continous effort) by Copperman, Hanson & Bershaw Jewel Kilcher was born May 23, 1974 in Payson,Utah where Atz & Lenedra (Jewel's parents) were living while Atz attended college. (Jewel also has an older brother Shane & a younger brother Atz) Upon graduation from college, Atz & Lenedra moved thier family back to Homer Alaska where Jewel & her brothers were raised on an 800-acre homestead. Jewel's parents became a popular Alaskan folk singing duo, well known regionally as Atz & Nedra Kilcher. They released their 1st self produced primarily acoustic album in 1977 entitled "Early Morning Gold". This album consists of original Alaskan folk songs written in collaboration or by Atz alone. Here's an edited excerpt written by Allen Reeves, who at the time of the release was President of the Anchorage Convention & Visitors Bureau: "The first time I ever heard Atz & Nedra Kilcher sing, I was struck by the honesty & simplicity of their beautiful folk music---and with the fact they are making history. You see, there has never before really been any Alaska folk music. Oh, there is ample ethnic music, but no real folk music. Not until Atz & Nedra put verse & melody to the spirit of the "Great Land" The Kilchers paint a pure portrait of Alaska." In 1978 Atz & Nedra released their second album titled "Born & Raised on Alaska Land". This featured more production & again featured all originals with the exception of a song written by Atz's sister(Jewel's Aunt),Mossie Davidson (who also released Alaskan folk albums regionally). In 1980 at the age of six Jewel began accompanying her parents performing for locals & tourists in Alaskan villages, clubs & hotels. Her earliest musical influences consisted primarily of the music of her family and a particular fascination with Ella Fitzgerald. Lenedra, being very spiritually guided, developed Jewel's spiritual side & raised her with a sense of magic & an appreciation & deep respect for the Indian Way. Jewel moved to Hawaii in the early 80s & lived with relatives while attending school. She regularly avoided being beat up & the prejudice toward her "being different" by yodeling (a talent she was mastering from Atz). A few years later Jewel's parents divorced & she remained with her father & brothers in Homer. Writing became Jewel's expression of choice since she found herself unable to verbalize many of her strong feelings at this young age. She later became enamored by South American poets Pablo Naruda, Octavio Paz & Giaconda Belli. She also absorbed philosophers Kant, Plato, Dostoevsky (& many others) as well as sensual writers such as Henry Miller & Anais Nin. At age 14, Jewel was "adopted" into the native Indian culture. She participated in a ceremony which included a "talking circle". During this she realized that although she had written for years, she was verbally speechless. Her "adopted" uncles took her for a walk & told her "you have a gift to give the world". She then began a conscious effort to speak more from her heart & and began articulating her feelings. During this time she continued to perform with her father as a duo & later in a trio called "New Directions" which featured Jewel,Atz & their friend Suzanne Little. It was over the course of this decade (1980-1990) that Jewel developed her vocal ability & her experience at working a crowd. Atz was a wonderful storyteller & Jewel absorbed his knack for "fun & interesting between song banter". Her father also instilled an extremely strong work ethic & taught Jewel what a professional musicians life is all about. During this time, repatiore consisted of many Atz Kilcher originals with Jewel singing harmony & background vocals. However, Jewel did take lead vocals on popular cover songs of the day such as "Angel From Montgomery" by John Prine, "Me & Bobby McGee" by Kris Kristofferson, the theme from "The Rose", etc, as well as many others. In High School, Jewel began to accompany herself on guitar. Her junior and senior years of high school were spent at Interlochen Fine Arts Academy in Michigan. Here she studied sculpture, art, music & dance. Interlochen is an expensive private school, and 70% of Jewel's first year tuition was paid for by a vocal scholarship. The remainder of the expenses were raised at what turned out to be Jewel's first solo concert. The citizens of Homer were supportive enough to cover the rest of the first year tuition. It was at Interlochen that Jewel's songwriting ideas began germinating. She began to build up a small repatoire of songs. She made a few demo recordings of eleven of these songs. These eleven demos consisted of her very first songwriting attempts. Other than "Don't"(then refered to as "Waltz") & "Dance Between Two Woman"(then simply titled "Dance"), the other 9 songs remain unreleased. Three of those nine (Billy, Can't Have My Soul[NOT WWSYS] & Money) continued into Jewel's early repatoire. The remaining half dozen being abandoned in favor of many new songs (including "Who Will Save Your Soul"). During Spring Break she joined Lenedra & fell in love with San Diego. The following year she was awarded a full scholarship & returned to Interlochen for her senior year. Upon graduation in the summer of 1992 (& after a brief stay in Boulder, Co,) Jewel again joined Lenedra in San Diego, which she now calls home. Jewel worked a variety of jobs including waitressing, but generally lost them when her interest in chatting with the customers surpassed her desire to do the actual job. Eventually she decided that working unfulfilling dead-end jobs was an unbearable way to live. With Lenedra's encouragement they moved out of their apartment, into their vans, to pursue their dreams. With lots of peanut butter, carrot sticks, and a guitar, Jewel settled down to write more songs. Around this time of new songwriting activity, she became very close to local songwriter, Steve Poltz & his band The Rugburns. They shared songs with each other & began collaborating on material. Steve taught Jewel how to better work within a "verse/chorus/verse" structure & his influence balanced her very serious writing style with his more humorous & spontaneous style.(They still periodically collaborate.) Her new ability to churn out songs was revealing a prolific talent at songwriting. She regularly debuted new songs to friends & this endeared her to the few who heard them. In late1993 & early 1994, she began performing sporadic gigs to sparse crowds at various area coffeehouses including one in Pacific Beach called The Innerchange. Word started to spread, and eventually she had a regular Thursday night spot there and an ever growing audience. Her name began to show up in the local press and she landed a few choice opening spots. She took an extended trip back to Homer at the end of the year, and things really took off when she returned to San Diego in early 1994. At the start of the year, the coffeehouse was roughly 60% full, and a mere $3 got you a 3-4 hour set of original material, with the only exception being an occasional cover of Tracy Chapman's "Behind the Wall". Becoming a prolific, versatile songwriter, Jewel still regularly debuted a handful of new songs at each show. These shows were a hotbed of local acoustic talent, and Jewel was regularly joined by frequent collaborator Steve Poltz. Fellow Rugburns Rob Driscoll and Gregory Page also joined them, as well as other local musicians including Joy Eden Harrison, Cindy Lee Berryhill and Byron Nash. Jewel also saw her first "official release" as a participant on 99X's sampler of area talent called "Saint Doug" around this time. She included a take of "Angel Needs A Ride". Everyone who saw her must have told five friends, since each week the crowd continued to grow. Soon, people were being turned away, while a few hardy souls could be seen staring through the large windows at the packed house inside. For extra money, Jewel put together a tape that she briefly distributed herself called "Shiva Diva Doo Wop" which contained the songs "1000 Miles Away", "She Cries","Painters" & "My Own Private God's Gift To Woman".The tape came with a j-card insert that also featured an original drawing by Jewel. Income was also supplimented by selling posters of original artwork by Lenedra which featured a blue background with a purple angel on it & the words "Participate In Miracles". The purple angel glowed in the dark & they sold for $5. The concept behind these posters was to buy two of them, keep one for yourself & post the other in a place you felt could benefit from its message. Around this time, the news of the young (19!) singer had gotten to L.A., and record executives started driving down to sleepy San Diego to catch the shows. They immediately recognized the quality of what they were seeing, and soon the limos were directed towards Jewel's van/home. She was wined & dined by various companies only to be dropped off back at her van. :-) After a brief courtship, she was signed to Atlantic Records by Jenny Price in March of 1994. They started making the trek up to L.A. looking for producers and musicians to record with. The advance on the record enabled Jewel to rent a house with Lenedra, & to purchase a new car (a used Volvo) and a new guitar (a steal due to an imperfection in the finish). All this added exposure continued to draw crowds to The Innerchange, which first added a second show, and then upped the admission price to $5. By this time, Jewel had written over a hundred songs. On July 28 and 29, 1994, a sound crew descended on The Innerchange to record 4 sets of Jewel on her home stomping grounds. All the live recordings on "Pieces of You" come from those two sessions. The remainder of POY was recorded at Neil Young's Redwood Digital Studio at his Broken Arrow Ranch in Woodside,CA during the following month. Atlantic prepared to help promote the album with a number of promotional items. The most popular of these is a CD called "Save The Linoleum". This was released to radio stations to promote the single "Who Will Save Your Soul" & featured both live & studio outtakes from the POY recordings. Included were unreleased versions of "My Own Private God's Gift To Woman", "I'm Sensitive","Race Car Driver", & "Flower". Also an EPK (electronic press kit) was produced for press release along with a contest to win a trip to San Diego. This EPK included a videotape called "Jewel & Mike Take San Diego". It featured an interview done by local DJ Mike Halloran & a brief tour through Jewel's life at the time. Besides interviews, footage included a tour of The Innerchange, the spot where she parked her van every night, surfing, hilarious footage inside Steve Poltz' apartment along with an impromptu duet of YWMFM & a home video of WWSYS. An official video was also produced for WWSYS for release to the video channels. Jewel began 1995 doing what is termed a "residency tour". January was spent rotating 5 nights a week from 5 California venues. Febuary repeated this procedure but hit upon a rotation of Washington DC, Philadelphia, Cambridge & NYC. It wound up in NYC at Ludlow Street Cafe on 2/28/95, the same day Atlantic released Jewel's album "Pieces Of You". Following the NYC gig, she flew back to California. She then performed both an early & late show to friends & local supporters in celebration of the albums release at the Cosmopolitan Theater in San Diego. Finally, The T-Shirt Guy (tm) has returned with a new, better than ever "Official" EDA T-Shirt. Last year, the Everyday Angels wanted to make a shirt so we could easily spot each other at concerts. Designs were submitted, idea were exchanged. I became The T-Shirt Guy (tm) and was in charge of the project. Then the EDA world was turned upside-down with the announcement of JewelStock. The JS shirt satisfied the need and the EDA shirt was put aside. People never forgot, however, and have been asking me when was I going to finish the EDA shirt. Well, now I have my act together and a new design (which has Jewel and Lenedra's blessing) and I am ready to make the shirt available to the list. The shirt can be viewed and ordered over the web at http://www.cybercom.net/~pjk/EDA or if you do not have web access simply email at this address for all the information on the shirt (design, ordering, etc.). If you would also like a jpeg of the design just ask. If you have any questions feel free to email me. However, for what it is worth, when I picked up my tickets today at the station the promotions lady gave me the impression that only 5 others had come to get theirs. Of course, most will pick them up tomorrow, but with the tight door deadline, there could be some no-shows. Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk content-length: 1994 Batman Soundtrack To Feature Pumpkins, Jewel & More Jewel will have a track on the Batman and Robin soundtrack. Addicted To Noise Senior Writer Gil Kaufman reports: Because we're all about the blockbuster events here at ATN, we've worked long and hard to get you a sneak preview of the soundtrack to the upcoming Batman and Robin marketing vehicle. As previously reported in ATN, the Smashing Pumpkins will kick-off the soundtrack with their new song "The End is the Beginning is the End," the first single from the album, which will also contain a second new Pumpkins composition, the confusingly-similar "The Beginning is the End is the Beginning." The soundtrack will also boast a re-recorded tune from Jewel's debut called "Foolish Games," Moloko's "Fun for Me," Arkarna's "House on Fire," Me'Shell Ndegeocello's remake of the Coasters' 1959 hit "Poison Ivy," Bone Thugs-N-Harmony's new tune "Look Into My Eyes," and tracks from the Goo Goo Dolls, Underworld, Lauren Christy, Soul Coughing and Eric Benet. The soundtrack is slated for release on June 10th, while the movie event hits theaters on June 20. The video for the Pumpkins track was shot by the movie's director, Joel Shumacher, on an L.A. soundstage last weekend. According to a source on the set, the clip called for the three core members of the band to pose in front of green effects screens in "shiny black rubbery suits" for what we can only assume will be a special-effects laden video. With a track record that includes two previous multi-platinum soundtracks with hits from Prince (1989) and U2, Seal and Method Man (1995) and given the unrelenting big studio/summer blockbuster push the movie (which stars George Clooney, Chris O'Donnell, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Uma Thurman and Alicia Silverstone) will receive, this Batman album will likely produce similar results, something the Pumpkins, at least, are not unfamiliar with. http://www.addictedtonoise.com/html/lofi/MNOTW/display-news.cgi?97-05-05#Batman From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Thu May 8 11:24:20 1997 Return-Path: Received: by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4) id LAA15817; Thu, 8 May 1997 11:24:20 -0400 Message-Id: <199705081524.LAA15817@jane.smoe.org> Date: Thu, 8 May 1997 10:51:14 -0400 (EDT) From: NeOblCar@aol.com To: jewel@smoe.org Subject: Jewel News: TV: Unplugged -- post #2 Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk content-length: 6203 Now I return you to more about Jewel's Unplugged performance: First of all I want to apologize if I slighted Maxwell in my before-show post. I said something like if Jewel was first look for Tammy and I to leave early. If we did we would have missed a great act. His performance was in many ways better than Jewel's (more on that later). But my main change of heart resulted from the crowd who was mostly there for him, and I had to hear his fans say how they had no interest in seeing Jewel. I then realized what a stupid thing that is to say, because for all you know Jewel's biggest fan is standing next to you. So again, I'm sorry for any Maxwell fans out there. Maxwell was great and a majority of crowd was very much into his music. As far as a performance goes, he was better than Jewel. He worked the crowd better and his set was more like a performance, whereas Jewel's was clips and snip-its -- not than I am complaining. One strong piece of advice for MTV -- get an APPLAUSE sign. Not knowing the songs I "woohoo'ed" at an inappropriate silent part of one of Maxwell's songs. I am now like to refer to myself as "woohoo-impaired" and would thank you kindly not to make of it! :-) As I mentioned, Tammy gave Lenedra the EDA cover tape, and Lenedra was sitting front row right side for the performance. She was flanked on both sides by some handsome young men, does anyone know if these were Jewel's brothers? After the intermission, MTV provided food and drink!!! We returned to an empty theater. Easily less than 300 people left and MTV struggled to fill the empty seats (In other words... as I mentioned in my "pre-show" post had you been there you would have gotten in.) Since the crowd was so small I expect during the airing the crowd shots you will see will actually be ones they taped of us before the Maxwell show (ah, the power of television). Question -- Where the hell is Big Blue anymore? Fashion report: Jewel was dressed down wearing dark brown pants with a lace up fly, and a faded black tank top, with a turquoise neck choker. Jewel's band consisted of a table steel guitar, another guitarist (playing lap steel guitar, guitar and mandolin), sax (Joshua Redman), piano (John Ginty), cello (John Higgins), drums, and stand-up bass (Greg Kohn). Now Joshua is a big name in the sax world, and it was obvious during the first few minutes with the band that they were trying to press his presence, even when the song did not call for it. She opened solo with (Stranger) Enters From the East, which she just called "Enters from the East." She then went on to "Boy Needs a Bike," calling it another new tune -- but we know the truth Jewel :-) A quick of many touch-up's of her make-up in which she uncomfortably allowed her make-up artist work on her. And she asks what would you rather hear "Satellite" or "Don't". Tammy and I, without thought, instantly scream "SATELLITE" and she lays into it. This version was slowed down a bit and I enjoyed it. It's now 11:00pm, 30 minutes after the scheduled end of the show. The band takes the stage. She gives a short story about how this next song was written in Mexico on a surfing trip and how she never thought it would make her so much money, including saying she thinks it is buying Steve a house. YWMFM was nice with the band, the mandolin was awesome for it. But the sax seemed over worked into song (IMHO). She then did Down (so long). Then she put down her guitar and the sax led for Foolish Games. It was harsh (again, IMHO), and I didn't think the sax worked as well as the normal piano entrance. She said to play the song in "single tempo" and opposed to album tempo -- truth be told I couldn't tell a difference. Of course, she began the song by asking people to call up radio stations and request it. (Our little Jewel, still feeling the need to push her material -- it's cute; radio stations should be begging for whatever she wants to release.) Then she fooled Tammy and I by saying how she loves doing this next song, and it started with a bass and sax intro that sounded a lot like the beginning of Summertime. And then suddenly she rips into WWSYS. There was a nice jazzy interlude and the sax really did fit this version of the song. BTW, Don Was was directing Jewel during show and giving her advice during the performance, and he seemed to be very much involved in the whole process. Alan, is this going to be a continuing collaboration? Jewel said she wrote this stupid song at Don's house and threw it away -- but Don asked her to perform it. It was a nice tune called, "Last Dance Rodeo." The hook of the lyrics are, "You're no longer human. You're an insatiable 'ho (or hole). You want to bury your face in the navel of her soul. All we need is a heart to call a home." It started as a solo, then had a sax interlude and ended with the band. For some reason I felt it kind of Tori-ish, but in a Jewel sort of way. That's just my impression though. She stated that her picks were slimly and asked someone if they had any Dunlap picks -- note to the pick people :-) She then sat down to write lyrics for almost ten minutes and literally half the crowd left. (All the more Jewel for me I say!) She then did a laid out, knock down of Under the Water from the Craft with the band. It was awesome! Then Don said that he was having her retake Foolish Games, YWMFM and Last Dance Rodeo. Not so surprising to me they did not have the sax intro or perform on Foolish Games or YWMFM -- appears I was not the only one who didn't care for it. After Last Dance Rodeo retake it was about 12:15am. Don says Jewel would like to do some more songs if it is ok with the crew and the audience. We all scream our approval (hard to make a lot of noise for 100 people though). She does solo, Fragile Flame, Passing Time, Don't, Too Darn Hot, and concludes with Angel Standing By. A very sweet reward for those who stayed. Jewel was in a good mood and laughing, jiggling, etc. as normal. Honestly, it is as close to JewelStock as we may ever get again. Well, that's my take on it in under 1200 words. Hope you enjoyed me walking you through the entire evening. --- Rob From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Thu May 8 14:12:47 1997 Return-Path: Received: by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4) id OAA17231; Thu, 8 May 1997 14:12:47 -0400 Received: from emout26.mail.aol.com by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4) id OAA17017; Thu, 8 May 1997 14:03:03 -0400 From: ABershaw@aol.com Received: (from root@localhost) by emout26.mail.aol.com (8.7.6/8.7.3/AOL-2.0.0) id OAA15082; Thu, 8 May 1997 14:02:14 -0400 (EDT) Date: Thu, 8 May 1997 14:02:14 -0400 (EDT) Message-ID: <970508124856_-332240314@emout07.mail.aol.com> To: jewel@smoe.org, jewel-news@smoe.org Subject: Jewel News: Jewel Tour Books Info-Updated Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk content-length: 3082 Hi all, Just a quick message regarding Jewel tour booklet sales & continued ordering info. It was obvious soon into his show why he was so popular. In a way, he's like a soulful, male version of Jewel - - I mean this in that he has his own spiritual quality, not that they are saying the same thing (does this make ANY sense at all - I think I need a nap....) IMHO, he reminded me of a cross between Terrence Trent D'arby and Prince (formerly known as...). Well, that's how I saw it anyway. I must add, as Rob did, he really knew how to work the crowd. Anyway, it was a good show and I'm glad we got to see his show too :-) So, after Maxwell's set, the auditorim was cleared as they changed the set (Rob and I both agreed that we preferred the set they used for Maxwell over Jewel's - oh well :-) After grabbing a quick sprite and beer, we headed back in and returned to our seats to await Jewel's performance. Man was the crowd smaller.... they moved ppl around a little - seating a few ppl behind the set also... Finally, Jewel was announced :-) YAY!!! She opened with Enter From the East, which was wonderful :-) Then did Boy Needs a Bike, after saying it was new - huh?? ;-) Here she complains about the prop mic set up by her guitar - - it's in her way and she feels she can't move....(this was removed after 1 or 2 more songs) Then she asks the crowd, "would you rather hear Don't or Sattelite?" Rob and I immediately yell out satellite!! in unison :-) I heard a few other Satellites in there also, but I think we were definitely the loudest. Jewel makes a kinda surprised face and if I remember correctly, commented on us knowing what we want - then a few ppl yell out "Don't" to which Jewel replies that it's too late and the ballots are closed and something about believing in Democracy :-) She also comments on how she wrote the song about Hollywood and is not allowed to perform it there anymore, but too bad, she says, Now it's gonna be on Unplugged - (hehe) - (I yelled out "Go, Jewel here, but I'm sure they'll edit it out ;-) Yay!!! She does a wonderful version of Satellite :-) At this point, Jewel asks that her band come out and tells us how great they are and how they had just met the night before at like 11:00 and that they learned like 14 new songs in 3 hours :-) Also, Don Was was very involved in the entire process (I lean to Rob and say, didn't he used to have a band - "yes" - wasn't it called "was, not was?" - "yes" - wow, can't believe I remembered that :-) OK, then she did YWMFM, and then Down So Long (Yes!!!! we hadn't heard this yet - No wonder those of you who've heard it have commented on it so much - It rocked!!! the band was awesome with this, not that I have anything to compare it to....she also did say she thinks this will be on the new cd) next were Foolish Games, WWSYS, and then a new song called Last Dance Rodeo, which was also a great song!! Hope it makes the album!!! Then she sits down and starts writing lyrics- - - we sit there wondering what she's gonna do now :-) When she comes back to the mic, she says don't expect much - To my surprise and delight, the next song was Under the Water from The Craft soundtrack - WooHoo!!!! It was stupendous!! (I'm getting tired of saying 'awesome' ;-) Here, Don has her re-do Foolish Games, YWMFM, and Last Dance Rodeo.... Now, without the band Don asks if Jewel can do a few more songs - yeah, like we'd say "no" to jewel :-) She ends up doing 5 more songs - - they were Fragile Flame, Passing Time (another new one - liked it :-), now she does Don't, Then as she's waiting for her Capo (sp?), she has the audience snap their fingers as she does Cole Porter's Too Darn Hot - - WOW!!! - - Then finishes with Angel Standing By!! As soon as she's done and it's obvious that it is indeed over, Rob and I head for the door - It's already much later than it was scheduled and there was no phone in the venue to call our sitter :-o. Whew!! What a night :-) Wouldn't have missed it for the world :-) Hope this wasn't too long :-) BTW, our set lists are in the order performed, so it'll be interesting to see how it comes out on the aired version :-) Talk to ya later :-) ONLY 8 MORE DAYS TO THE EDADVENTURE AT SIX FLAGS :-) Tammy :-) From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Sun May 11 10:23:59 1997 Return-Path: Received: by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4) id KAA00853; Sun, 11 May 1997 10:23:59 -0400 Message-Id: <199705111423.KAA00853@jane.smoe.org> Date: Sat, 10 May 1997 12:39:57 -0700 From: Sinjin To: Jewel@smoe.org Subject: Jewel News: E-MEDIA: Mediadome Update Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk content-length: 447 I don't know how long it's been updated, but I noticed today that Mediadome added new songs to it's Webcast of Jewel's San Diego Concert at http://www.mediadome.com/Webisodes/Jewel/ Here's the current selection: "Cold Song" "Nicotine Love" "Little Sister" "Enter from the East" "WWSYS" "Chime Bells" "YWMFM" "Race Car Driver" Damn, still don't have "Down" on there. Jewel looked fantastic, better than i have ever seen in fact. she had this sort of Futuristic chick thing going on (i think it was the eye liner) But if you will notice by the second song her make up has pretty much worn off and the blue eye shadow is faded... the shirt was very flattering, while still see through (you will notice this at the end of the show) the shoes were classic, high heeled black sandals (does she EVER wear sneakers???) I was hoping she would have done a skit (a la Aerosmith) but i doubted it since its very rare that a musical guest gets to do a skit and that since in the skits the artist usually has to mock themselves and Jewel is not the kind of person to do that on TV (i wish she had though)... At the end of the show when they all stand around together and say good bye jewel looked very uncomfortable... She ws kinda standing there with her shoulders slumped, and with the heels she looked a good 3 inches taller than several cast members (is this why she doesnt wear sneakers?) anyways, a good show, a great band, wouldnt mind seeing them on tour with her... Lovies, peace and all that. Don't worry, you can download her WMSYS and YWMFM SNL RealAudio files from my site. Act soon. I don't know how long I'll have them up. As for her performance, I thought it wasn't all that great. The saxophone and steel guitar detracted from her voice and guitar. She also seemed to falter on the lyrics a bit and went into a bit of scat. Also, what's with SNL and makeup? When No Doubt was on, Gwen Steffani looked like the makeup queen, and Jewel also seemed to have WAY too much make up on. Overall, Jewel's performance on the Nick. Most of you know me by the name of "Crunch". Alan was recently given an idea by Jewel. I volunteeed to research it and present it to the list. This is an idea for some- thing to do for Jewel for her birthday, not because we "deify" her, but it is something that she cares about, and we care about her. If this project does not sound right for you, there have been many other options made available on the list. Please maximize your window! ================================================== For those of you that have been following Alan(MrBB) and Mike's posts recently, they have been saying something VERY big was in the works for Jewel's birthday. Well, folks, THIS IS IT. There have been SO MANY good posts recently about birthday gifts for Jewel. We are a very creative, caring, and thoughtful community of angels. So thoughtful and creative, in fact, that we came up with many more possibilities than we could possibly put into action right now. So, after the outpouring of ideas from the list, it seemed the hardest part was finding something simple and angelic. This in mind, Alan explained our wishes to Jewel's mother, Lenedra. After telling her about the many wonderful suggestions from the EDA's, Alan asked for her advice. Much to our surprise, Lenedra had an immediate recommendation! It may accomplish in one opportunity all of the things we hope for Jewel on her birthday. Jewel was recently given a letter at one of the San Diego shows that was a little different than most. It captured her attention. This is the letter: ********************************************************** April 4, 97 Dear Jewel, When you went to collect your award at the American Music Awards show, you made a point of telling people, "never give up hope...it's what got me where I am today.". Meet James Kalanick. A 20 year old without much hope these days. You see, last fall James was returning to his car after running out of gas on the freeway near PB when he was struck from behind by a hit and run driver. The accident leaves James in a quadriplegic state, requiring motorized wheel chair and full time care taker. He will need both for the rest of his life. The driver never slowed or stopped and was never identified. The family had no insurance and live on a limited income. State programs have helped the family on most of the medical bills... Which brings us back to hope. Being confined to a wheel chair for the rest of your life can drastically alter one's dreams. James worked for Baltimore Bagel Co. in La Jolla prior to the accident. Admittedly, he was carefree and hadn't figured out what he wanted to do for a living. Now, however, his dream is to gain a sense of control and independence in his life and return to a job. As his former employer, we're trying to help. James needs a van equipped with a special hydraulic lift for transportration. The total cost is around $40,000. Baltimore Bagel (changing it's name to Einstein Bros Bagels) is having a couple of benefits to raise the necessary money for this vehicle. Would you consider helping us out? .....Matt Sullivan -- Einstein Bros Bagels, San Diego,CA.>> ************************************************************** Many of the ideas that were discussed concerning gifts for Jewel did not involve money. Many, if not most of us, can not afford much in the way of a sizeable donation. Individually, our contribu- tions may seem insignificant. However, small donations from each of us will grow into a combined "EDA Gift" that will make an unmistakable difference. Some intial phone calls have been made to see how easy it would be to put this plan into action. This is what we know: 1) There are other San Diego area benefits going on for James and we can be a small part of accomplishing this very "tangible goal". 2) There are no administration people making money. No money is being spent on advertising, etc. Every single dollar will go towards the equipment James needs. 3) Donations can be sent directly to the James Paul Kalanick Trust already set up specifically for James' equipment. 4) Jewel suggested it. The support of the EDA community toward the JPK Trust need not stop individual EDAs from following through on other great ideas they may have an interest in. The JPK Trust is one very worthy goal that we can all contribute to together. Donations, both large and small, all contribute to the same goal so it doesn't matter what financial situation you are presently in. We need not, and can not, try to raise $40K. Any donation (even one single dollar) is one step closer to the goal. There is alot of people on this list, just imagine if each person donated $5. Jewel's birthday is in just over a month. Jewel has received many gifts throughout her most recent tour and often she responds to them in the same way. She asks that we give to others the hope and inspiration that we once gave her. This is a chance for us to "manifest" that wish. So, how do we do this? How do we donate a few dollars to the James Paul Kalanick Trust for a collective EDA Gift to Jewel on her birthday? After just a few phone calls, it became apparent how simple this would be for us to do as EDAs. Matt Sullivan, James Kalanick's former employer and head of the JPK Trust, is an extremely helpful man. He truly appreciates Jewel's talents and is amazed that she read the letter, let alone get a call from her fans. He had all sorts of questions about who the EDAs are and what it is we are all about. After discussing Jewel and EDAs, Matt described exactly how easy it is to give whatever is available. Each of us can send a check, however large or small, directly to the bank that is holding the James Paul Kalanick Trust (Wells Fargo Bank). Step by step, here it is: Address a check to: James Paul Kalanick Trust In the memo postion of the check write the account number like this: Acct# 6671946366 Post the check in an envelope addressed to: James Paul Kalanick Trust Wells Fargo Bank 1302 Garnet Ave San Diego, CA, 92109 To keep an up to date record of what we have given, an E-mail account has been set up. After each of us has given our small part for James Kalanick, send an e-mail to . Let us know what you gave, the date it was sent off, and the check number. This info will be used to parallel the bank's records and to give the list updates about our efforts. In this way, we can each donate a small amount ($1, $5, $20, or more) to a cause which has captured Jewel's personal attention. Lenedra recommended this as something we could do for Jewel on her birthday. Another EDA offered the idea of sending Jewel a birthday card letting her know what we are doing. She will recieve the card on her birthday while on tour in Europe, reminding her that there are EDAs doing things for her while she is out on the road! This card is in progress, as is a web page (the address to be posted soon!) ***IMPORTANT: PLEASE forward any questions that you have to a new account I have set up for this project at . ALSO, to keep our own tally of the contributions, PLEASE send an email to AFTER you have sent your check stating how much you sent. I will be away from my computer starting again tomorrow, but did want to pass along the vital information. First, it is actually Alter Wartesaal. It is a discotecque attached to the Cologne Haubtbanhof (main train station). Directions from the station are: 1. Exit front of train station (Dom [main church in Cologne] will be on your left hand side). 2. Turn Left out of door, but do not go up stairs towards the Dom. 3. Turn left at corner. 4. Walk approximately 40-50 feet. Look to your left. Alter Wartesaal! Like most/all German discos, it is below ground. There is a nice restaurant next to the disco, also called Alter Wartesaal. Yes, they are related. No, you can not buy tickets there. Regarding tickets, you can only get the tickets at the door, and only that night (23 May). I went to every ticket outlet in Cologne, and they all said the same thing. I attempted to speak to the Alter Wartesaal management, but they don't open the doors for the disco until 11 pm. That was a bit too late for me this trip. The show itself will probably be around 7 pm, based on other posters I saw for shows there. There is some good news regarding the tickets; although it is not good news for Jewel's publicity. There has not been, and will not be any advertising for Jewel's show; at least until just a couple of days before the performance. Even then, the posters et al must be put up by Jewel's group. I asked at the ticket outlets, and was told Alter Wartesaal does not do publicity. They just expect people to show up. So, unless an Atlantic/Jewel staff member, or Jewel herself, publicizes the show, it won't happen. If you are interested in places to stay..., drop me a note. I will be back in my office next Tuesday, so I can respond before you depart. Getting accomodations is not a problem in Cologne, so reservations are not needed. That's it. Anyway, back to the show.It started and ended with my 2 favourite songs,1000 Miles and Nikos. In between, from what I can remember,Jewel played WWSYS,Little Sister,Near You Always,I'm Sensitive,You Were Meant For Me,Amen,Race Car Driver,Chime Bells,Carnivore,a Cole Porter number, and 2 or 3 songs that I didn't recognise, plus Lenedra sang Jewel's old bedtime lullaby and they then did a beautiful closing Duet (which I didn't recognise and which almost fell apart in complete laughter at the end when they forgot the words !!).All in all,the show lasted 80 minutes (not bad for an $8 ticket price) although unfortunately it went by so quickly. Just a little something about the Mean Fiddler venue. The show was played in the (very small) acoustic room in front of just 100 people (sold out),creating a very noisy and enthusiastic atmosphere which Jewel really appreciated. She seemed genuinely surprised that so many people would turn up to see her play in a country where she had never been before, although it has to be said that us Brits were outnumbered by Americans by about 5 to 1 !!! I don't now how she would go down in a large venue. It seems to me that her music is custom made for a small club-type stage, unless she plays with her band in the future.Having heard a few live tapes recently,I much prefer her playing acoustic,so I really hope that this doesn't hold her back Finally,I seem to remember a topic of conversation a few months ago on how attractive Jewel was.Well, take it from me that she is drop-dead gorgeous.I spent the whole show standing 6 feet away from her and she walked right past me 4 times going to and from the stage. The glint in her eyes and the smile on her face could melt even the hardest man. She is playing in London again on 28th May,though I've probably left it too late to get a ticket now,but it won't stop me trying. -- Richard P.S I'm sure that this question has been asked and answered before, but what is the story behind Jewel continually being asked to play "Freebird" and her not doing so.The guy who yelled it out tonight only succeeded in getting the "finger" from her !!! Would be cool though. BUT what I DO know is that there is a TV and radio-show in Holland called '2 Meter Sessions' where artists are asked to play their songs once again in a recording-studio (that is to re-record them) the show is very succesful, popular and all and Jewel will fit in their format, perfectly. So I think that is the deal here. Besides that, the venue where she'll be playing on may 15 is the upper-room of the famou Paradiso-club, which is very small, two camera's and it'll be crowded :-) Another (more obvious) possibilty is the also Dutch TV-music show 'Pogsibonsi' That's a show with a dutch comedian who has the most incredible artists in his show (like Jools Holland at the BBC) and does a whole lot of funny sketches and skits in between the performances....anyway one of that shows is scheduled for may 27, so maybe..... But, when it's different. you'll hear it from me first the day after the show (that is may 16). I'm so happy. I saw Jewel last night. Yes, just 24 hours ago, I was talking to her....I'm still dazed. I went to the concert with my bother. Many of my friends were meeting me there. It took us a while to find the place, because the first place we went to, was so strange looking, that, even though it corresponded to the address, we didn't think it was there. It was a building in the rue Pigalle, in Paris. The rue Pigalle is famous for it's prostitutes, sex shops and what have you. The building we got to looked like some place I would not go into. However, after walking around for a long time, my brother and I decided to go in and see if by any chance this was where Jewel was playing. We found techniciens who said they had no idea who was playing tonight. I showed them a picture, and they finally decided that yeah, it was probably her. So my brother and I showed up at the concert place four hours in advance, hoping she'd come early. Soon another hopeful admirer showed up. We talked and talked about Jewel, and how he'd found out about her. We were sitting in this old rickety staircase, swathed in dim light. When this groupe of Americans came by, they saw me, and they asked me if I was Jewel, which was funny. Anyways, it turned out that Jewel would arrive about two minutes before the concert started and thus, we would not see see her beforehand:( The line got longer as the hours went by. Finally they let us in. We sat on the floor (there were no chairs). Everyone was so well behaved, it was amazing. When Jewel arrived, the room cheered and then hushed. I think we were all stunned. She started singing, then stopped, and said, in her ever so sweet voice, "in the Taxi comming over here, I was imagining that only five people would show up, and here you are". She made you feel so welcome. Her first song was '1000 miles away' or whatever that song is called. She sang a song that she had never yet performed in public, called Last Dance Rodeo. Actually, she's not sure if that will be the title. She also sang this song called Carnivore. She said it was about never trusting your heart to a carnivore, "because, as you know, they are flesh eaters". I WAS WONDERING, is Jewel vegetarian? I am, so I suppose I read a lot into her words, but it really made me wonder. Anybody know? SHe said it was a new song. Then she sang mostly only songs from POY. These are my overall impresseions from the concert. (I don't have much time to write, I'm in the middle of my finals, but I want to give all you loving EDA's an idea of what it was like.) The room was small, but packed. There must have been 250 people max. Everyone was well behaved. Except for the instance when Jewel commented on how hot this room was, and some guy cried out "so are you!", the croud was very respectful. She was wearing black pants, shoes with high heals and a black suit top. She wore no make-up, her hair was "normal" looking. She was absolutly stunning. Jewel is really photogenic, but up close, she's so much more beautiful. When she sings, she is sincerely into her songs. ie : when she's singing about somthing sad, you're think she's going to cry. Her voice is much better than on POY. She plays around with it, and the croud loved it. I think she could feel all our good vibes, because she looked so happy. At the end, we got the talk to her. I was wearing a t-shirt that said EDA in blue on a red heart. She asked me where I'd gotten it, and I told her I'd made it. I had all these qurestions for her, but basically, I was so thrilled to be talking to her that I forgot everything I had to say. Oh well, some other time. For anyone who has any doubt about how Jewel is with her fans, I can assure you that she couldn't be nicer. Well, that will be all. One last comment : this is an unforgetable experience. All my friends were thrilled that I had convinced them to come. I wish I could have sat on the floor listening to her forever. I wish I knew her personanly. This is the first time I'm looking up to someone famous. It's a weird thing to do, because she is, in a way, unatteinable. However, I hope to someday really talk to her, for longer. WOW. After weeks of waiting, it was time to leave the books and take sanctuary in the soulful voice of Jewel, LIVE! Adie Turford, Chris Groves, Matt Knudsvig and myself had arranged to meet up at 7pm outside the venue for what would be the first ever British EDA Gathering. Unfortunately, I misjudged the London transport system and also the location of the venue. Some friends and myself eventually arrived at about 7.30pm and went straight to the queue. After a few minutes, an American guy came up to us and asked whether one of us was Myles. I greeted him and he introduced himself as Matt, originally from the Detroit area but currently residing in Nottingham. The others were in the bar and after a little while they joined us in the queue. The group was complete and we exchanged stories and anecdotes until the=20 doors were finally opened. The Acoustic Room is absolutely tiny. They say it has a capacity of 120 standing up (there were no chairs) but even then it was a crush. The thing that was immediately apparent was the lack of Brits in the room. Everywhere you listened, you could hear American voices saying how great it was to see Jewel for only =A35.00. The room was darkened with red painted walls and a tiny stage. We managed to get seats on the bench next to the wall. I was at the end and was only 15 feet from the stage (Imagine, 15 feet away from Jewel for 2 hours). After an hour of sitting around and explaining the blue ribbons (Adie had managed to get some ribbon and had distributed it accordingly), a guy made is way to the=20 stage form the back of the room through the crowd and he was introduced as the opening act. I can't remember his name but he has a single coming out on Atlantic in the next few weeks in the states. He played for about 30 minutes giving us some nice but rather formulaic songs on an old Roland keyboard. Then the count down began. 30 minutes until Jewel would appear on that stage and stun her audience. The Jewel Bit ------------- The management had told us to stand up so that more people could get in the room. At 10pm, I got my recording Walkman started in eager anticipation of what was happening. At 10.02pm, a door just at the back of the crowd opened and people started pushing their way out. Then two short blond ladies made their entrance. At first nobody noticed them then it became obvious. It was Lenedra and Jewel. She eventually made her way to the stage, again through the crowd. A few of the Americans around me said it was amazing that she was having to do this but it didn't detract from the wonder of seeing Jewel in the flesh from only 15 feet away. After plugging in she went to the microphone and remarked, "I didn't think anyone would come," A sigh came from the audience, "We're small but we're mighty." she added. After a quick story about Zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance, she started playing '1000 Miles Away'. It was a great opening piece. She followed with 'Morning Song' after saying a bit about the Johnny Cash a couple of weeks previous. 'Everything Breaks Sometime' came next after Jewel told us about her meeting with Bob Dylan. 'Ride Away' was next with no introduction. The next monologue made us aware of what she was doing. She had gone on stage with no real set list and she asked the audience whether they felt like caring tonight. Someone immediately shouted out 'Freebird' to which she gave the ominous middle finger. Then some one shouted out 'Race Car Driver'. She asked the guy where he had heard it before and he replied that he had heard it at a concert in Toronto. She was surprised at this. 'Adrian' was the next suggestion that came out but only when Little Sister was mentioned did she start playing. Next came Race Car Driver as promised earlier. When she finished that, she started playing the opening pattern to 'Enter From The East' but then stopped. She asked us whether we wanted to hear that or 'Absence of Fear'. The vote was pretty much split so she went with Absence. She immediately went into 'You Were Meant For Me' afterwards to which the crowd went wild. 'Carnivore' came next which she claimed was a new song. 'I'm Just Passing Time' was next after a false start. She actually started with the wrong words but quickly corrected herself. I'm afraid the next 20 minutes or so are just a blur. I think 'Amen' was in there somewhere. The reason is that I am doing this report from the recording I managed to make (it isn't the best quality but anyway). By now, I had to change sides on the tape. You have to understand that I was standing on a bench so everyone could see me so I had to do everything by touch underneath my jacket. I managed to get the tape out and turned over but I think it didnt go back in properly. After about 15 minutes the=20 tape stopped and I took it out to check. Unfortunately, most of the tape was left in the machine. After a quick panic, I managed to clear the mechanism and get my backup tape in place just in time for the last half of 'I'm Sensitive'. A surprise to all of us was when Lenedra suddenly got up on stage and started talking to Jewel. Eventually, they came back to the mic and said they were going to try and sing a song together which they hadn't tried before. It was the song that Jewel had written for the Romeo & Juliet soundtrack called 'Face Of Love'. The best way to describe it is to say that they stumbled their way through it. They stopped and started and tried out a bit of harmonising. It was the first time that I had heard Lenedra sing so in that respect it was a treat. They eventually got to the end and were given generous applause for their effort. Lenedra then took centre stage for a short piece that Jewel described as a lullaby that she had sung to her as a child. It was a very pretty song with its roots definitely in native America. Jewel stepped back to the mic and went straight into 'Who Will Save Your Soul' with the same beginning that she had given throughout this tour. She commented that it was the current single over here and that it was our job to call the radio station and request it. We were to be her 'little soldiers' as she put it. After a quick story about her fathers eyebrows, she burst into 'Chime Bells'. That was her final piece and she gave her modest thanks and left the stage. The cheers however carried on and on. Only when she appeared for her encore did the noise subside. =20 Our Matt scored a point when he handed Jewel a stuffed toy as a birthday present from the 4 Brit EDAs there. Our names were on the gift tag so she can remember us at least until she loses the toy. She then asked for suggestions before finally deciding on something herself. Jewel got the audience snapping their fingers to provide the rhythm to Cole Porter's 'Too Damn Hot'. She claimed that we would never hear the next song ever again. It was an autobiographical piece 'Nikos'. That was her final piece and she quickly disappeared through the door she entered through. Our group of EDAs decided to hang around and wait for Jewel to leave while my friends darted off to KFC. I decided to stay with the EDAs which was just as well. As we were waiting at this door, Michael Stipes (Lead singer of REM) casually walked passed and went through the door. Most of us were just amazed and could only speculate over why he was here. One of Jewels Roadies told us that she should be going out the side door directly onto the street in about 15 minutes so we made our retreat to there. After about 25 minutes we were getting anxious. My friends had already disappeared to catch the Underground so I was now committed. Adie had kindly given me some promo postcards that I was determined were going to be signed. After a further 5 minutes, we were rewarded when a crowd came out of the main door. First out were Michael Stipes and friend who quickly moved past us with only a very contained 'Hi'. Then Jewel, Lenedra and the group of record people and managers came out. Chris made the first move asking for autographs. She seemed to be happy to do it as there only about 9 of us who had waited. She was dragged off eventually by some bloke who must have been the tour manager or something. As we made our way out on to the main road, I looked back to see Jewel and her crew clambering into a couple of cars and I was left thinking when I would next see her. The general reaction from the EDA group was that we were all going to get tickets for the Union Chapel gig on the 28th. I will certainly be on the phone in the morning trying to get a few.=20 In conclusion, The evening was a rip-roaring success. The atmosphere throughout the night was electric and every note and word Jewel uttered was pure magic. I think Jewel was having fun. If the pace of the tour was wearing her down, it certainly didnt show. She kept on commenting how pleased she was that so many people came to the concert. If only she knew that most of them were already fans from the States. However, I know that the 4 people I took along are now complete converts and I will=20 have to auction off whatever tickets I get for her next gig.=20 Until next time. Ps. If you are wandering about the recording I made, I have about 1hour20 of useable material. Unfortunately, I had the gain on my mic up too high for most of the songs so in places, the sound gets distorted. I will post to the list when I have got a finished product together.=20 Myles MacRae --=20 ----------------------------------------------------- Myles MacRae - Imperial College London - ISE 1st Year mgm1@doc.ic.ac.uk - m.macrae@doc.ic.ac.uk ----------------------------------------------------- From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Sat May 17 15:55:18 1997 Return-Path: Received: by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4) id PAA19759; Sat, 17 May 1997 15:55:18 -0400 Message-Id: <199705171955.PAA19759@jane.smoe.org> To: Jewel-News@smoe.org From: IWuvGavin@aol.com Date: 12 May 97 21:11:40 -0800 Subject: Jewel News: Jewel in Disney Adventures Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk content-length: 571 I'm not sure if this was already posted, but my friend came to school today with a special surprise for me.....a page out of the June Disney adventures.....the one with a big dinosaur on the cover (thats what she said???). The reviewer was there the 2nd night when the crowd was better-behaved. She mentions a sing-a-long on "I'm Sensitive"-hmmm... Anyway, the piece is a kind of a combination Jewel/ Cheryl Crow Live with mention of other grrls thrown in, as well. When David Bowie and Elton John play NYC around the same time I wonder if they get reviewed together? It's the issue with Shirley Manson on the cover. Of course I went to Amsterdam to see Jewel perfom overthere (it was/is my Birthday so what would be a better present then a Jewel concert). During the day, Jewel was on a boat-trip thru the Amsterdam canals with a radio-DJ and a group of fans who got theit tickets from I don't know how or who... Anyway, the concert was held at the upstairs room of the famous Paradiso....it can hold up to 250 people and it was kinda crowded. I was early, so I was directly near the simple stage, where only one mike was set up. When the crowd came on we all got a paperbag with a press-kit, containing a bio, a glamourous promo-photo, a copy of the Brand new issue of 'Rolling Stone' with Jewel in the cover and a sampler CD with three songs on it......(POY, WWSYS, YWMFM) Anyway...I could look into the corridors and 10 minutes before teh show we saw Jewel and her Mom appear, smiling, giggeling and waving to us. When she entered the stage, she made the same joke as she made in Paris (according to the review) I thought it was only me and 10 of you....she got all the laughs. The show was packed with jokes and funny statements of Jewel...she asked for a nailclipper and asked what it was in Dutch...asked what "I'm Sensitive' was in Dutch and so on...anyway...she played a whole lot of songs and some requests to. When she let us choose between 'Pieces of You' and 'WWSYS' we asked for both and she kinda mixed them together one verse....anyway...after plaing the first verse of 'WWSYS' she quitted the song and said that she was fed up with it..and that she felt like rebbelion that she had stopped playing it. She also played with her guitar and mentioned that when she was famous she would get a guitar-techinician. Anyway, the show lasted a bit longer then one hour...I was kinda disapointed that had gone by so fast... My highlights: 'Pieces of You' (with a tale about her dreams), 'Cold Song', the Yodel-song and 'You where meant for me' There was no sign or mentioning about taping the show for TV or Radio, so I think the statement about the appearance in the TV-show "Pogsibonsi' as a mentioned in an earlier post might be true. Where there other people of this list there in Amsterdam ? I was the guy in the yellow shirt at the right end of the stage. O yes, I almost forgo...Jewel rushed kind aoff stage and before she left she signed a few CD's and a few of the distributed pictures...on of them was mine :-) YES !!!! Later ! Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk content-length: 3041 Hello everybody! I'm new to *this* list. I'm a Melissa Etheridge fan ( and a real one :-))) and after the VH1-duets show of Melissa where she sang Foolish Games (and "You can sleep while I drive") with Jewel I'm adicted to Jewel's music. It's Thursdaynight 8 o'clock and we are walking to Paradiso in Amsterdam. Not knowing what is going to happen I was guessing it would be great to see her and listen to that wonderful voice. At the entry some promo-people of the recordcompany (Warner Music Netherlands) were reaching out packets with promo stuff. In it was a real photograph, a promo-cd with extracts of You were meant/Who will save/Pieces of You, and the may-issue of Rolling Stone with Jewel inside and on the cover! So the night started good. About 200 people got tickets and it was sold out. A very small place to be :-)) She played from 21.00 till 22.00 and did a few request. In Spain were only 10 people in the audience and she was telling a lot about that :-)) I can't tell you exactly the set-list but she played most songs I know. Even the songs I know from the Geneseo boot I have (2/24/97). The cold-song, chime bells and Morning song are my favorites but the most beautiful song live is Foolish Games. Oh man, what a sound. A few friends on the front row, where we were staying, were agreed that it technically was better than Melissa Etheridge! Not the guitarplaying but the use of her voice makes her Queen. I need about a week to calm down of what I have seen in Amsterdam that night and I know for sure I will be in first line again at the time she is around somewhere in Holland/Belgium or Germany. As I mentioned I have just one boot from Jewel, and a very good one. If somebody is interested I would love to trade some tapes. Not all together please :-)) (I can include the duets-VH1 songs also...) Also Jewel played in a dutch TV-show that night. Live at Paul de Leeuw's show at 23.00 h. So she hurried to that TV-show after the concert...... I'm sorry that I didn't tape that (I'm feel sorry for myself also...) but I'm still searching for somebody who did tape it. If I have news I'll let you know. Jewel will not be playing Parkpop, a festival in The Hague, The Netherlands. I really don't know why someone put her on a list for that festival. 200.000 people in open air!!! That's not the ideal place for Jewel I think :-)) Thanks I can have a place in this fine group and hope to read a lot new things here! Greetings, Marcel. Marcel C. Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk content-length: 3761 Hi, First, quick info: Jewel will not be providing the voice of Epiphany in that Fox(Disney?) animated program that someone previously mentioned to the list. Sorry to be so vague but I forgot the name of the show/movie or who posted about it. But I did check on this & she is not involved in any such project. I'd also like to add a big thanks to all who've been writing me privately with encouraging words lately. I haven't the time to respond to all of you, but I love hearing from you & I definitely read each & every one. This past week has been one of the best in a looooong time for the list, too. It's great seeing so many more EDAs hooking up with each other. That's the "X" factor that makes this list so special (in case you're new here & wondering....). There's another "in house" project I've been working on lately & I want to briefly tell you about it. It regards a brand new series of authorized tape trees. I want to begin a brand new series to be called "FUTURE FOLKLORE". Its to consist of special EDA related non-Jewel performances. The 1st two volumes of this series are now in production. They will consist of 2 100 minute audio cassettes featuring all the performances at both The Hot Dog Fest(featuring Poltz & Stinky) from Dana Point,CA & The EDA Cafe (Featuring Cindy Lee Berryhill & Elizabeth Hummel) from Boston recently. Permission has been granted from all the artists & the recordings are quite nice. Tegan Godwin captured the entire HDF performance & I recorded the EDA Cafe myself (with Phil & Dennis' help). The performances at these "now famous events" are really special & contain much unreleased material. Those who attended either event will testify to the magic that occured. (by the way, I'm a longtime Cindy Lee Berryhill freak. Her & Elizabeth's performances at EDAC are simply incredible!) Although it'll be a little while before the tapes are ready & Dennis finishes designing the artwork, we need to figure out a new network for distribution. Mike Connell is no longer available to administrate the massive "authorized tape trees" & so someone else is needed to take on such a beast. Mike told me he'd be willing to advise this "new administrator" but cannot do it anymore himself. Those who've survived the many free distributions in the past, know that this is a relatively thankless (& extremely frustrating, at times) job. It's also very important to me to include "branches" of this tree that will take care of Cindy Lee's mailing list & The Rugburns list. I want this to be shared amongst all three lists. I know we have folks that cross-pollinate these other lists. (I obviously love challenges! ;-) I realize we're starting from scratch again here, but I think this series has great potential. Like anything we try to do, its going to take serious organizational skills & a LOT of volunteer time. I'm not asking for volunteers at this point. I simply want to see how much interest exists in such a project & we'll figure out who can do what later on. At this point simply think about this project & when I return (after Memorial Day) maybe we can begin to figure out how to accomplish this. Feel free to post ideas to the list, but please save any private emails to me (about this) until next week at the soonest. I also sincerely hope that once Jewel's birthday is over, that we continue to follow the path we've begun travelling down in regards to The EDA Foundation. The JPK Trust was a phenomenal beginning, so lets continue figuring out where this is headed. I see great things happening all around us & I know with this group of people, the potential is limitless. Have a wonderful weekend y'all!! We achieved real consensus that we didn't want to inundate Jewel with conventional gifts, and so we're commemorating the day with spiritual and generous personal and collective acts. We know this is more in line with her wishes, and this being the real gift, will no doubt please her immensely. However, we also knew the EDAs wanted to present her with something representative of our feelings for her that would be memorable, appropriate and kind of fun as well. The guitar picks are an excellent idea but unfortunately were not going to be available in time to make an impact on her birthday. We hope that you will find the following another idea that you'll be proud to be associated with. If nothing else, we hope it brings at least a smile to every EDA face. For a number of reasons, there was virtually no consultation with the EDA's for this gift, so we hope you don't find it too presumptious that we're presenting it on behalf of all the EDA's. Timing was a key factor, and we had to move quickly if we were going to be able to present this to Jewel on her actual birthday. However, we're confident that most of you will be happy (or at least amused) with what we've done. As an abstract and symbolic gesture, we've arranged to have a star officially named after Jewel. This has actually been accomplished! A star that is easily visible (in the bucket of the Little Dipper) no longer has just a bunch of teloscopic co-ordinates for a name. It has been officially redesignated as 'Jewel Kilcher (Jewel of the North)' Those familiar with Jewel's favorite question ("Would you rather be a fish or a star?") & her answer to this question will hopefully see the thought (& humor) behind this gift. A few of the key people in Jewel's life that know about the gift have said this will blow her mind! (They are sworn to secrecy, too :-) Amy Nuefeld also was kind enough to design a card from The EDAs to Jewel. This was originally intended to simply accompany a message detailing all the great things the EDAS were doing (such as The JPK Trust Project, Blood Drive, The Raffle, JPK night at Java Joe's, Hot Dog Fest & Berryhill/Hummel EDA Cafe in Boston). Without knowledge of this gift, she created the PERFECT card! Incredibly, on the front is an angel figure blowing into their hand as it explodes into stars! Cosmic, heh? ;-) You can all see this card along with Jewel's certificate, letter & star map. You can also read a note that was included explaining the concept. We think this will pretty much explain to you why we felt this was a gift both worthy of Jewel, and the truly wonderful group of people that comprise the EveryDay Angels. All of this is now available on a new area of the "Pieces Of Jewel" site. You can actually view these gifts now by taking a little journey to: http://home.sprynet.com/sprynet/xenomorph/birthday.htm Lenedra has the originals (certificate, card, star maps, etc.) with her now in Europe. She will be personally presenting them to Jewel on her birthday (Friday) in Cologne, Germany as a gift from all the EDAs. We hope you continue to support the EDA Foundation & become an active part of its future & to make a difference in your own community, as well. But for now we simply hope you all enjoy being a part of this birthday gift to Jewel & accept it in the symbolic & humorous way it was intended. If you want more than 5 of them, please use a Priority mailer--I can fit up to ten of them in there. Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk content-length: 1959 Hi to those interested in the online Jewel Chronology & Performance Project, I've been digging up a lot of new info over the past few months & Adam has added most of it to the online version now. Some older confusing sections are now fixed. I was confused myself regarding the end of the residency tour in NYC & the POY release gigs in San Diego. On the rough draft of the early Jewel history recently posted, I stated that the NYC Ludow Street Cafe gig & the POY release gigs happenned on the same day. This was mistaken. The POY release gigs actually occurred 2 days after the album was released. Anyway, that (among other things) is cleared up now on the chronology. Also many older shows that were missing completely on previous versions are now included. I was surprised to discover that 2 shows slipped by everyone on this list. In March of 96, she returned to Homer & did two sold out gigs at Homer High School (as well as an Anchorage gig a few days later.) I don't remember anyone mentioning these gigs at the time. For those interested in seeing where Jewel has performed past, present & future visit the Jewel Chronology & Performance project at: http://home.sprynet.com/sprynet/xenomorph/jchrono.htm As always, additions, corrections & suggestions welcome. Also anyone with the chance to see Patty Griffin on her current small headline tour, DO IT!. Just saw her again Friday night & she was very powerful & pouring out more incredible new tunes. I'm not a huge Springsteen fan but she ended her encores with a mesmerizing cover of "Stolen Car". As always it was a pleasure to see Patty & the setup in Hamden was great. The front row was occupied by Rachel, Erica, Ted, Jerry Zigmont AmyJo & myself. It took place in a little barn & you could hear a pin drop during her songs. :-) Something about silence that certainly enhances this kind of performance! Best wishes! And the small audience of about 250 is really enjoying it. Until she stops abruptly. "I hate to do a song-us interruptus," she says, "but if I finish this, they may use it, and I made a lot of mistakes." Colvin is stressed because this is no mere concert: She's taping an appearance on Hard Rock Live, VH1's ambitious new weekly concert series, which airs Sunday nights at 8 P.M./ET and repeats throughout the week. (A "best of" show drawing from the first eight hour-long shows will debut May 25, featuring Jewel, Lou Reed, Cheap Trick, and Chicago, among others.) The point of Colvin's performance isn't to make this a once-in-a-lifetime experience for the invited crowd -- though that may happen -- but to make the show look like one. Take the Lemonheads' appearance, which aired last month. Folks at home might describe lead singer Evan Dando as enthusiastic. "Thank you! Thank you! This is amazing!" he said at one point during the televised show. But at the February taping, he was obviously being sarcastic, mocking the kind of rock-star pose you'd find at a real concert. "Come out and see us at a club sometime," he said. "It'll be a lot more fun -- for me, anyway." (That comment didn't air.) The slings and arrows of making music for TV also flew for Paula Cole, who had the misfortune to play right after pop sensation Jewel. She hit the stage to find that the thick crowd had largely dispersed and those remaining seemed to have never heard of her. But by the time her performance aired (she and Reed were featured on the May 4 show), Cole had a hit song in "Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?" -- and thanks to selective camera angles, she seemed to be playing to an enthusiastic crowd. But that's to be expected: Hard Rock Live wants to introduce new artists such as Cole, soul singer Maxwell, and the band Rusted Root. It also showcases established acts: Upcoming shows include INXS, k.d. lang, and Hall and Oates. Executive producer Robert Small, who created the now-legendary MTV Unplugged series, points out that live-music fans have generally had to rely on the occasional Unplugged or awards show to see bands in concert settings. "Very few outlets are willing to take a chance on [live music]," he says. "The networks don't even consider it, because it doesn't get the ratings." The ghost of the ongoing Unplugged series lingers over Live, which is taped in the very studio where Tony Bennett dusted off his black tie and tails for a new generation of fans in 1994; it's the same stage where Nirvana's Kurt Cobain sat surrounded by candles and gave one of his last performances. And while Hard Rock Live lacks the hip gimmickry of its MTV counterpart, a few artists have already turned in performances that were remarkably spirited -- both live and on tape. Jewel's show was supposed to be edited to appear with Rusted Root's, but she so charmed VH1 executives that they devoted the entire March 30 series premiere to her performance. So viewers got to see the 22-year-old yodeling with her father, Atz Kilcher, and doing an impromptu rendition of "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" with her mother, Nedra Carroll. But the real highlight so far has been a transcendent evening with Reed, the rock icon and former front man for the Velvet Underground. The TV version offered just five songs, including collaborations with performance artist Laurie Anderson (she is also Reed's girlfriend) and saxophonist David Sanborn. The live audience, however, got a special treat: two hours of music, including such Reed classics as "I'll Be Your Mirror," "A Perfect Day," "Satellite of Love," and "White Light/White Heat," which didn't make the broadcast. Sometimes, unfortunately, there's no substitute for being there. __________ /\//\\///\\\////\\\\/////\\\\\//////\\\\\\/////\\\\\////\\\\///\\\//\\/\ \ New to the list and confused? Jewel is really great. Hearing her in concert is much more enjoyable than listening to CDs. First of all I have to thank all the EDAs who made it possible that we (Kris Kane, The Crying Angel and myself) finally got to the concert. It took place at Quasimodo a nice club with a good atmosphere. I arrived early so there were only the german tour officicals present and I was able to talk to them. They said it was hard for Jewel to do all the interviews and but it'll surly help to make her more popular in Germany. As the concert started there were about 200 people present. It was very intimate and we got front row seats because we were the first who got in. Imagine we were sitting just 5 feet away from her. It was fantastic. When she got in she caught everyones eyes. She started with 100 miles away and it was like electricity floating through the room. Here is a list of songs I remembered: 1000 miles away Pieces of you Foolish games Don't Cold Song Angel standing by Sometimes it be that way Morning Song Who will save your soul You were meant for me Chime Bells During the show she told us some stories about the songs (like meeting Bob Dillen) and the time passed too fast. She program ended with 'You were meant for me' but she hat to come back three times before the concert ended. Especially 'Chime Bells' which was one of the very last songs drove the audiance crazy. After the show we were really lucky to get backstage to talk to her for a few minutes and get autographs. It was a great thing talking to her even only a few sentences. Unfortunately Kris and Shana had to leave for the train to get their flight back to the states so we couldn't talk any longer. But just two days showed me how meeting other EDAs means having a good time together. Kris got the show on videotape and took lots of pictures so hopefully he will make a webpage about his visit in Germany. It was all very exciting and - quoting another listener - really hypnotizing. I hope she'll soon come back to Germany to see her again. At her attorney's advice, Jewel cannot accept these kinds of things. Any of the above that are sent to Jewel via her mailing adresses in the CD will be returned to the senders. Unfortunately, many artists fall victim to lawsuits when people claim an artist used their work. So please refrain from sending these things. They cannot be considered & it creates extra work & expense having to return these items. I'm sure people outside the list will continue to send these things anyway, but at least the EDAs won't be making this mistake. There are "other" things in mind to utilize the talents on this list very soon. We are still figuring out details & posts about some of these projects will be forthcoming shortly. Stick around! :-) Second--- About a year ago, a list member named Geoff Warder was collecting names & adresses for a Jewel newsletter/fanzine database. Geoff, are you still out there? If not, can anyone who's friends with Geoff please put him in touch with me, if at all possible. I think he was from the Toronto area, but I don't recall for sure. Any help would be appreciated. JOE ] Hello all. I would like to update everyone on the plans for RockFest for those of you who are starting to make travel arrangments. Only three more weeks. So far we have things in the works for activities Friday Saturday and Sunday for those of you that can participate. FRIDAY is the official Blockbuster tailgate party. On sight camping will be allowed for those who want to camp on Firday night to avoid the traffic and see the additional bands. There is a camping fee for every vehicle which covers them for the weekend. This fee is $30, thats a big chunk of change to pay out for weekend parking. We are in the process of obtaining an RV for the weekend if everyone is willing to chip in. We feel that this will save in the long-run on camping fees for all the EDA's who are going to be present for both days. There will be a large food court at the Speedway but it is sure to be very expensive so we will also use the RV as the EDA HQ. We are hoping to BBQ and keep all the food that we will need for both days in the RV. This too will save money for all involved. The gates for camping will be open at 8:00am on Friday June 20 for early arrivers. If we are able to obtain the RV for the weekend then we will make arrangements for everyones cars at one of the local EDA homes so we can all ride in the RV and save on parking fees. The actual TailGate party starts at 5:30 on Friday June 20. This is when the live music will begin from bands other than those who are headlining on Saturday. I am told that there will be an autographing session for the bands whick will be in the Main Blockbuster tent on Friday so bring your Sharpies and favorite pics. There will be only one stage, not two as was thought, but it is an enormous stage which is about 170 yards in length. Some of the non headlinig bands that will be playing on Friday will be TOAD THE WET SPROCKET, PAULA COLE, THE NIXONS, MATCHBOX 20 and MORE..... The venue will NOT be serving alcohol at the show but is allowing spectators to bring in coolers up to 14x14x14 with food and BEER (no hard liquor or glass containers) with a charge of $10 per cooler. SATURDAY gates open at 6:00 am and there will be a $5.00 charge for parking for cars and $30 or RV parking. the gates will not open until 8:00 am on Saturday. Preshow is schedule to start at 10:00 am and the show will start at 2:00. This is where all the headliners will begin to perform. We have available a list of local hotels if anyone would like to stay the night on Saturday. We may have a local EDA house to stay at but at the moment we are unsure. PLEASE REMEBER that BlockBuster has given away and sold over 1 MILLION TICKETS to this show so the TRAFFIC will be horrible. So don't expect to get anywhere fast before or after the event. SUNDAY. An EDA gathering wouldn't be complete without the TRADITIONAL EDA BREAKFAST on Sunday morning. Most likely we will eat at a local IHOP but we will have to wait to see how many people will be in attendance. ALSO, for those who will be in town on Sunday, we are making arrangements for everyone to attend the FIRST EVER........AQUA ANGELS. Thats right, how can you not want to get wet in the HOT TEXAS SUN without getting soaked by your favorite Angel. Plans are in the mix for a Massive waterpark bonanza for Sunday after breakfast. More details are to come on this but don't forget to bring your swimsuit =) If there is anyone who has an RV and could bring it down for the weekend than please contact me. If you still want to come and don't have a ride or ticket DON'T FRET, if you E Mail Christina or myself we can most likely get you a ride from anywhere in the country from one of the EDA's already attending. And tickets, well they always seem to manifest themselves =) Our committee does have extras so don't use that as an excuse. For all of you who are flying in, if you want to contact one of us we can gladly make arrangments to get you to and from the airport. I still need everyone to RSVP me so we can have an idea of what kind of food we will need and sleeping accomadations. We hope to see you all there. More to come soon. There's been many great EDA parties around the country. Some of these had incredible entertainment provided by other San Diego area musicians such as The Rugburns, Cindy Lee Berryhill, Elizabeth Hummel & Gregory Page. (All friends of Jewel, by the way) In the case of the Hot Dog Festival (HDF), thrown by the Morales Family in Dana Point, Ca, Steve & Jeff (aka Stinky) from The Rugburns dropped by & played a short but wonderfully unique set. There's many brand new songs (some still have unidentified titles) & those who were there can testify it was quite unlike any Rugburns show of late. Shortly after that, an impromtu EDA Cafe (EDAC) was thrown together at The Snyder family's home in Boston,Ma. Cindy Lee Berryhill & Elizabeth Hummel cancelled a gig in Albany & joined us for an incredible night of music & EDA hilarity. I'm sure Cindy Lee & Elizabeth will agree it was a highlight of their tour. It was certainly the longest gig of the tour! (I'd also like to say that any hardcore "Pet Sounds/Smile era Brian Wilson" fans will be absolutely blown away by Cindy Lee's new "keyboard" material! I personally love "Antarctica", "Missing Link","Aquamarine" & "She Rides The Wild White Horse" more than any other songs I've heard by anyone this year!) I plan on distributing (free of charge, of course) the 1st two volumes of a new ongoing tape tree series that will contain all the performances from both of these events. These particular EDA events are becoming legendary & thus the name "Future Folklore"..... These recordings will be different than the elaborate authorized Jewel recordings that we've treed in the past. Both of these events were recorded without the use of a mixing desk & are more reflective of the actual events. The music is still crystal clear but you also hear the EDA interaction (as well as the birds & ocean at HDF!). Tegan Godwin made the "ambiant" HDF recording & its really quite nice & captures some of the spirit of this historically significant EDA gathering. At EDAC, Phil & I collaborated on last minute equipment, but it worked out well. We ran a seperate mic on vocals, one on instruments & one on the room so everything was captured clearly. (If any techies are curious about the recording techniques utilized, write to me privately.) Its also important to note that the musicians have all been incredibly generous enough to authorize the release of these recordings for this project. I have two goals for this project: I certainly hope to turn more EDAs on to these other San Diego artists. They can all benefit from our continued support. But more than that, I want to share a little of that "x factor" that happens when EDAs get together. There's something very special going on that I want to see continued. Lovable Lawyer Larry said it best: "We all began as fans of Jewel & then became fans of each other". It's looking like Mike is gonna take the big plunge & administrate this free tape tree once again so that's now together. Dennis Harris is busy with j-card design & I'm sure they'll be mind blowing, as usual. He was at both events & has many photos from both to incorporate into the j-card graphics. These volumes of "Future Folklore" will consist of two 100 minute cassettes. Instructions will be posted in approximately a month & sign-up will begin. This tree will be different & we're working out exact procedure still. It's very important to me to include the Rugburns list & the CLB list, as well as the EDAs this time. Logistics are being worked on. (Please wait for these instructional posts BEFORE requesting copies or volunteering participation in this tree.) Following this message is the tentative track listings. This music is really something special. If this is successful, I'm willing to donate my resources to continue this series on an ongoing basis. I'm hoping "Future Folklore" Volumes 1 & 2 will be enthusiastically recieved. If nothing else, I sincerely hope this series will help encourage more events like this in the future. Finally - the "Official" EDA Shirt is here !!! Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk content-length: 1189 The EDA Shirt is here!!! The shirt can be viewed and ordered over the web at http://www.cybercom.net/~pjk/EDA (I should have a couple alternative sites up soon if in case there are any more problems with my server) or if you do not have web access simply email at this address for all the information on the shirt (design, ordering, etc.). If you would also like a jpeg of the design just ask. If you have any questions feel free to email me. Thanks, Phil (The T-Shirt Guy) Kelnhofer From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Sat May 31 10:54:30 1997 Return-Path: Received: by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4) id KAA28692; Sat, 31 May 1997 10:54:30 -0400 Message-Id: <199705311454.KAA28692@jane.smoe.org> Date: Fri, 30 May 1997 02:37:18 -0400 From: Steve Ito To: jewel-news@smoe.org Subject: Jewel News: Lilith Fair in Toronto onsale SAT Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk content-length: 1170 Hey EDAs For those thinking of coming to the Lilith Fair in Toronto, tix go on sale on Saturday May 31 (tomorrow) at 10:30am EST (changed from 10:00) ON THE INTERNET ONLY. ^^ (Note the time change: it was very recently changed.) That's right folks, all of you out of towners can get tix just as easily as us locals! Just point your web browser at: http://www.ticketmaster.ca/tmfiles/ac_help.htm and in the search window, type "lilith". Tix range from $22.50 - $42.50 Canadian (around $15-$30 US) Cheapest seats are General admission lawn seats, the rest should be reserved admission (with the possible exception of the pit area at the very front). It's at the Molson Wankitheatre (amphitheatre) which is a truly hideous venue as far as I'm concerned, but then I hate most huge venues. Good luck, and hope to be seeing many of you in August. As of Friday, 2:22pm, there is STILL no official onsale date for regular outlet sales and phone in sales for Lilith Fair. One other thing: This is only for the *first* Toronto date. This does *not* mean that the second date on Alan's lists is not happening. For multi-date shows, the promoters here regularly announce one show, sell as many tix as possible, and then announce the second show at a later date. All of Tori Amos' shows here have been handled in this manner, for example. Steve P.S. in case anyone here is wondering, I'm a "fallen EDA" (news-only). I was a regular poster until Aug 96 or so. That also means if anyone wants to respond, please respond directly as I don't get regular list mail. - ------------------------------------------------------------------ Steve Ito, | "Life is pain, Highness.
