Please bear with me. Those who know me well, know I type very slowly & it'll take me a few days to get through it all. But I will! There's lots of great news but some "not so good" news too. Please hold off any questions till I get through it all. If I have to answer lots of private emails, it will only delay me getting all the info to the list. Heres some great news to start: THE RUGBURNS ARE WARMING UP THE WHOLE TOUR. (Hoot! Cheer!) Also heres a hot tip to San Diego area EDAs from Lenedra: Find out where The Rugburns are playing on March 1 & go there. She didn't know where this unadvertised gig will be, but I think you get the picture. ;-) OK. I'm signing off to write out the entire tour for you. Be back shortly. (By the way, Lenedra did ask me to relay a message about the making of a list T. She asked that whoever is doing them to please NOT use any of Jewel's artwork, lyrics, or poetry on them. I know this has been suggested. ) There will also be a beautiful Tour Program with many color photographs, Poetry & thoughts from Jewel. OK. I know Mike & I have had this on our "wish list". Sometime during the last few weeks of February or early March, Jewel will finally be interviewed by the absolute best in my opinion. Yes, Mike old buddy, she's doing Charlie Rose's show. If you have never watched Charlie interview, you are in for a treat! Regardless of the guest, he's consitantly brilliant & unquestionably this will be the best broadcast interview she's ever done. No date has been set but I'll keep you updated as I can. Hi Everyone, As I said before, I was on the phone yesterday with Lenedra for quite a while. We knew all the tour dates were very important to you, so that's why I posted them all first (Saturday's digest). As you know, I mentioned there being some great news, some good news & some "not so good" news. I've agonized a bit on telling you all this part, but I might as well get the "not so good" news over with. Just remember, that I am simply a messenger. Please do not flame me nor deluge me with emails, the following is all I know. While reading this, keep in mind that although we all love Jewels' writing & music, the best interests of her career occasionally do not coincide with the wishes of this list. OK. Here I go..... Rumors have been running rampant on the release date for Jewels new album. Major magazines have published April 15th as a release date. One list member posted that it might be July. Both of these possibilities are incorrect. At the moment, "You Were Meant For Me" is achieving Top Ten status on more & more charts. There is still a long life expected for this single by Atlantic. One thing that record companies strive for is to keep their recordings on the charts (& thus selling) as long as possible BEFORE releasing new product. (It's generally considered unwise business to have 2 releases by one artist competing for sales with each other.) Lenedra informed me that Atlantic will soon revise their plans due to the incredible impact YWMFM is experiencing. The absolute earliest that a new album would even be considered being released would be September. However this is NOT likely. Read on & I'll explain the rest of the scenario. According to Lenedra, what may happen next is this. In May (after the tour), Jewel would be going back in the studio. They will "tweak" the recording of "Foolish Games" by recording new vocals & remixing it for a 3rd single release off "Pieces Of You". This would then be released when YWMFM has run its course. As many of you will agree, "Foolish Games" is a much stronger song than either YWMFM or WWSYS. (I think so too. Lenedra agrees & Atlantic is obviously feeling the same way.) So later in the year, it's highly likely this re-recorded version of "Foolish Games" will be released as the 3rd single & then it will have to run IT'S course. It has obvious Top Ten potential too, & probably will enjoy a long chart life. They fully expect it to carry very well thru the last half of 1997 and into next year. What this all means (& the part I've dreaded telling you) is that it's becoming highly likely that the 2nd Jewel album will be released sometime during the first quarter of next year, 1998. I realize this is very disappointing news to EDAs, but remember the best interests for Jewels' career do not necessarily coincide with the wishes of this list. To have another song off P.O.Y. go Top Ten is a great success for Jewel. In related news, the formerly considered titles for the album have been discarded with the passing of time. I will next post all about that as I do have that information. It's quite an interesting (& fun!) story. I know that it will take awhile for the impact of this post to set in. Remember, this list has supported Jewel when few knew who she was. I sincerely hope that this disappointment will not change that for anyone. The EDA's are so connected & knowledgable, that now it's neccesary to give the world a chance to catch up a little! ;-) There still are lots of good things coming & a few GREAT brand new projects will be revealed in the next few days. I will be squeezing in a lot more info for you this week, when I have time. Hang in there. And remember, please don't hate the messenger! :-) Hope to meet a few more of you at upcoming shows. I'd also like to thank Dan for his insightful post followup. I'm trying my best to keep my opinions out of it, but I must say everyone should read his post again. Anyway, I am being deluged with questions regarding tickets for this tour & requests for the Tour Dates by way too many people. PLEASE, from here on out, if you need the tour schedule point your browsers to my online chronology at Adam's site. He has now updated the 1997 page to include everything I currently know about the tour. It is available 24 hours a day at: http://home.sprynet.com/sprynet/xenomorph/jchron97.htm If you're curious about ANY Jewel performances in the past, present or future, it can all be found here. We've put a lot of work into this & it now contains info on well over 500 Jewel performances. From now on this week, all my upcoming posts will have information guaranteed to contain HAPPY exciting news! There's still a lot of things I found out from Lenedra & I will get to them as soon as I can. I felt the tour dates & album status were what everyone was most concerned with, so that came first. Stick around for much more! Lastly, today, I want to tell you about something "minor" that Lenedra seemed pretty excited about that all you collectors might want to track down. There's an industry magazine called "Hits" that is mainly sent to industry people only & Jewel is on the cover of the next issue. She's been on the cover once before. You may be able to get one from your local record store owner. I know a lot of them subscribe. Its an expensive subscription (I think around $300.00 per year) but they may give it to you when they are done with it. According to Lenedra, the photo used on the front cover is THE MOST EXTRAORDINARY picture of Jewel that they've ever seen!! I haven't seen it myself, but a recomendation like that sure makes me want to see it! So if anyone finds this (I'm working on it too), please contact Adam at xenomorph@sprynet.com so he can get it up on the "Pieces of Jewel" site for all to enjoy. Thats all I have time for today. Stay tuned! :-) Alan (MrBB) From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Mon Feb 3 15:48:35 1997 Return-Path: Received: by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4) id PAA19034; Mon, 3 Feb 1997 15:48:35 -0500 Message-Id: <199702032048.PAA19034@jane.smoe.org> Date: Sun, 02 Feb 1997 09:38:13 +0000 From: Tom Morales To: jewel-news@smoe.org Subject: Jewel News: MISC:Jewel, Rugburns-Java Joes Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk X-To-Unsubscribe: Send mail to "jewel-news-request@smoe.org" X-To-Unsubscribe: with "unsubscribe" as the body. content-length: 3785 The only thing wrong last night is we had to take two cars. It's Chelsey's b'day Tuesday and as part of her present she was able to take a couple of her girlfriends along and I took my son. So, it was a total of 5 kids and two adults in two cars heading south to Java Joe's. I took a digital camera along for picts. Kaili unloaded 16 shots in 15 minutes, mostly of Steve and Stinky. Well Epic records was there so they played a lot of new stuff and they seemed a little tight but it didn't take long for them to loosen up. Stinky was on his best behavior; no spitting took place. So just before they took there break Jewel sneaks in, spotted by Nancy of course who always has one eye on the door. I didn't catch a glimpse of her until she was behind the cafe counter. I turned around and took a long look and she looked back and smiled. I don't know if she recognized me but she recognized Nancy. Nancy gave me the okay to delete the pictures as we were pretty sure that she would be joining, as Nancy calls, them "the boys" on stage shortly. After a few more songs Jewel joins them and Kaili proceeds to unleash her budding photography skills. Jewel was wearing a light blue vintage style coat and (after she took off her coat) a beautiful vintage style dress. She really looked classy. They did two songs together: Old Lover's House and Daddy She's A Goddess. She then anounced that she wouldn't have to come back to San Diego anymore between her tour because the Rugburns were going to be opening for her the entire 5 weeks. I don't know if that's how long the tour is but that is what she said. (So whoever wrote that they'd just as soon tear up their Rugburn tickets and listen to their cd's, bummer because my grandfather had a really cute ass. And double bummer because I guess you'll miss Jewel too.) Sorry, I had to get that off my chest but don't go considering it a flame. I've only had 3 hours sleep and I'm just really excited about the whole tour. Okay, so after the break they came back and played for about two more hours and about half way through that Nancy sees Jewel leaving. She let's me know she is going to slip out and see if she can say hi. She takes Kaili along. But of course Chelsey notices and she and her 2 friends all converge on Jewel outside the cafe. Nancy tells me she was sweet and wonderful and most of all unpretentious. I'll have too look that one up. She talked with her for awhile and then they said goodbye. I'll have to clear the rest of what they talked about with Nancy. Not that it's that big a deal but somethings Jewel shares because she knows her fans respect a certain amount of privacy. Anyway, they finished playing at two. Two little girls around 6 and 7 took over the stage at one time and at another a 60-70 year old man walked out of the crowd and went on stage and got about 3 feet from Steve's face and started taking pictures. The funny part is when he crouched down to waist level and took a picture of some young women with a short little dress on not more than 3 feet from her too. Well, I've rambled enough. If anyone is interested in seeing the picts just let me know what format: gif, pict, jpeg. The picts are the clearest then jpeg and the gifs are okay. I'll pick a few of the best shots and attach. I'm trying to figure out what uuencoded means and whether or not it expedites the emailing of the pictures. does anyone have any advice that way I could send all of them to some of you. Anyone with a website interested in these pictures? Thanks if you read all this and please make the Rugburns feel good about their show even if they might be a little nervous. You have to remember they're used to bars and coffeehouses. Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk X-To-Unsubscribe: Send mail to "jewel-news-request@smoe.org" X-To-Unsubscribe: with "unsubscribe" as the body. content-length: 5706 Hi y'all, This letter is a call to for "leaf" requests for TWO Jewel tape trees that will run concurrently, using the same branches for both trees! To see the SET LISTS for the two tapes involved, please read the companion post to the list entitled "Jewel Tape Trees - Set lists for the Jeweltide Carols tape & 5/18/96 Boston tape". (It was sent at the same time this one was, but for you digest subscribers, it MAY be in the next digest, as I won't know for sure until I send this) PLEASE read EVERY word of this post. Many of you are experienced tape "leaves" and/or "branches". However, many are not and may be totally lost in this. This post is written for their benefit...the new folk. So veterans, please bear with me. Two quick notes: ALL BRANCH APPLICANTS WHO ALREADY APPLIED - As I said in Emails to you, if you are not chosen as a branch, you do not have to send in a leaf request as I will automatically put you in the leaf pool. ALL NEW FOLK WHO HAVE NO IDEA WHAT A TAPE TREE IS - there is also a note for you at the end of this Email for you explaining what a tape tree is. The two tapes that are being offered in this tree are: Jewel Rocks The Paradise - is a very high quality re-master of the Jewel concert from the Paradise Club in Boston on 5/18/96. I realize more than a few of you may have a 'version' of this tape but believe me, this re-master is a 'must have'. Dan Stark, who did the re-mastering said, "I'm absolutely thrilled with the way it worked out! I'm pretty much a perfectionist when it comes to this sort of thing, so you know if I'm bouncing off walls it sounds pretty good. :)" Jeweltide Carols - consists of the Jewel sets from two holiday multi-artist fests that Jewel was a part of in early December 1996. While the sets are identical, the very high quality (and full stereo), plus the 'extras' make it a very desirable tape to have. The extras include: Jewel and Lenedra (her mother) belting out "Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer" (with Jewel scatting!!) and the walk-on Jewel did with the Wallflowers to sing "6th Avenue Heartache". Each tape will be a 90 minute cassette. There will NOT be any DATs, mini-discs or VHS Hi-Fi available of these tapes, standard audio cassettes only. A SYNOPSIS OF THIS TREE: As this tape tree offers TWO different tapes, you can 'request' either one or both tapes. You (the leaf) will EMAIL me with a leaf request per the instructions below. You do not have to tell me which (or both) tapes you want, you will be telling that to your assigned branch later. (In other words, it don't matter to me if you want one or both, as it does not matter at all at this point) When I receive your leaf request, I will immediately reply to it just so you know I got your request. (Call it a return receipt if you will) I will assign you to a branch and EMAIL the both of you about it, with basic instructions on what to do. It may be 2 weeks before you get this leaf/branch assignment. So PLEASE be patient. Some of the branches will not yet have their master tapes when I make this assignment. The branch will contact you when it is time for you to mail him/her your blank tapes. (your branch will also include some further instructions particular to his/her methods of being a branch) WHEN TO EMAIL ME: Now if you want, but don't wait too long. I want to wrap up the leaf requests within 7 to 10 days. HOW TO EMAIL ME: ALL I need to know is your full name, your Email address (duh), and where you live. While it's not really important in the USA, I'm going to try to do geographical leaf/branch assignments. So, what I need you to do is to Email me with the SUBJECT (NOT the body) of your Email in the following format: leaf, state or country where you live Please, do not put a 'space' after the comma examples: leaf, alaska leaf, england leaf, new zealand leaf,Israel leaf, canada leaf, new hampshire leaf, california leaf, guam Please, NO abbreviations either, spell it all out. In the BODY of the Email AT LEAST tell me your FULL NAME and if you intend to send METAL tapes to your branch, tell me that too. I do not need to know your postal mailing address. Your branch will later, so you can Email it then to him/her at that time. If you have ANY questions about any of this, feel free to Email me. :) Everyone involved in this project sincerely hopes you enjoy your tapes. Remember, please get the SUBJECT of your Email to me right. :) It will help immensely. Your fellow Everyday Angel, Mike ____________________ WHAT IS A TAPE TREE: A Tape Tree on this list is a system utilized to distribute hard to get music of Jewel, be it live recordings or cuts from promotional releases and/or interviews. The basic structure for a tape tree that it is a co-operative effort among many subscribers to this list. It is to spread the music of Jewel, at no cost, other than to supply your own blank tapes and to pay for the return postage. It is done in the spirit that if you can, just maybe you can return the favor someday. If not, so be it. The "tree" will start with one or more "seeds" who have a master copy of the tape to be treed. These seeds will each make copies for the "branches", who supply their own tapes plus return postage. The branches are recruited by the tree administrator via a post to the list. After the branches are nearly set up, the administrator will then post to the list for "leaves". The leaves then Email the administrator with the requested information, and they are then assigned to a branch. The leaves then send blank tapes, plus return postage to the assigned branch, who then makes copies for the leaves. That's the basics. Well, don't despair! All you have to do is go visit that uncle with the big satellite dish on his front lawn, boot him off the Golf Channel for the night and tune in the show on satellite audio! As James McGarry pointed out, the concert is on sometime during the 5-hour "Realtime" program, Saturday, March 1st on CBC Stereo radio. You can pick up the audio feed on any large-dish satellite receiver as follows: CBC Atlantic: 7pm-mid Atlantic time (6-11pm Eastern) Anik E2, Channel 6, 6.12/6.30 Discrete Stereo CBC Eastern: 7pm-mid Eastern time Anik E2, Channel 6, 5.76/5.94 Discrete Stereo CBC Pacific: 7pm-mid Pacific time Anik E1, Channel 10, 5.76/5.94 discrete Stereo "Realtime" is also broadcast on the web using RealAudio. You can either hear the show live, or later on demand, at: http://realtime.cbcstereo.com/html/audio.html As far as I know, CBC Stereo is not carried on any of the DSS mini-dish systems, like DirecTV or Echostar, so the satellite info only applies to the large-dish systems. But the broadcast isn't until March 1st, so you still have almost a month to get to Krazy Bob's satellite store and pick up that home entertainment system you've always wanted! In other news, tickets for Jewel's Detroit show (Sunday, March 16 at the State Theatre) will go on sale at 10:00am Saturday morning. I won't have price info until tomorrow, so when I get that I'll post full details. While we were talking about the delay on Jewel's new album, I asked Lenedra whether Jewel had ever decided on a title. She told me that all the titles Jewel was considering this past summer (& were mentioned at Jewelstock) had been discarded with the passing of time. I figured that the title must be "up in the air" then. Lenedra then told me that Jewel had written a new song that will probably be the "title track" on the new album. The name of this song is "Fritz Creek Store". Fritz Creek Store was a log cabin/store that was nearest to the homestead in Homer, Alaska where Jewel grew up. It was the closest place that they could purchase supplies etc. Lenedra told me that one of the reasons that this song is such a strong contender for "title track" (besides being a great song, of course) is that they have the perfect picture for the cover! It's a photo of Jewel & her brother posing under the large Fritz Creek Store sign when she was just 4 years old. She told me that Jewel is hamming it up & sticking out her bare belly & that the picture is absolutely adorable. :-) I could tell by the tone of her voice, that she loves the song & the photo, so unless something else amazing comes along, thats the likely scoop on the album title. I told you its gonna be fun news from here on out! :-) Still a lot more about new projects yet to come. We're getting down to the last of the new info. I'm going to save the most interesting project for the next & last post, but in the meantime here's answers to a few more long lingering questions: #1. So....Whats the deal on that Jewel "official" newsletter many of us signed up for way back when? Lenedra told me that the Official Newsletter is finally coming together! As many of you know, they had a major computer crash last year & a lot of information was destroyed. They had to begin again & they've been diligently working on it behind the scenes ever since. From what I was told you can all finally expect to actually see the first edition published somewhere around the end of March. I believe everyone that signed up back then is still in the database. I don't currently have info on how new folks can sign up for it, but I'm certain that all that information will be posted here when the time comes. According to what I was told, it is coming along great & it will be filled with all kinds of updates (some you'll already know) & photos. It's guaranteed to be very enjoyable for all EDA's. #2. Will we ever see a Jewelstock video? Unfortunately, this will likely not see the light of day for a long time, if ever. There is over 23 hours of footage & most has unusable audio. The amount of work needed to edit the raw video & synchronize the ADAT audio to all of it (proffessionally) is monumental. I briefly discussed doing a simple version of the 1st night only & that might be a possibility down the road. But for now its pretty much a dead issue. #3. Hey, since the album is delayed, does this mean we'll have to wait on Jewel's book of poetry, too? You'll have to wait a little while, but you wont have to wait until the album is released. (For those new folks benefit, I'll explain. Jewel will be publishing a book of lyrics, poetry, prose & writings that should be very intriguing to folks interested in her other avenues of creativity. Folks who were at Jewelstock know her "non-song writing" tends to be much more personal than her lyrics.) Originally, Jewel's book was to be published to coincide with the album, but Lenedra told me that they are going to try to get the book out before years end. I took lousy notes during this part of our conversation but I think I recall a mention of September. (Please don't quote me on that). #4. Is there a title for Jewel's book? Funny you should ask! :-) As a matter of fact, yes. The title of Jewel's book is............ta da!........."ACCIDENTAL POET". Lenedra told me that this was also being considered as a title for the album, but they didn't want to title the book & the album by the same name. I have no info on who the publisher is going to be but I'm sure all that info will be available here first, when the time comes. I'm already aware that many EDAs want autographed copies, so please refrain from privately emailing me regarding this. I'll be sure & check out what possibilities may be arranged as regards to this list. Otherwise please wait for more info. That's all I currently know about the book. #5. Anything else? Although I've told you almost everything I know of so far, there is still one more INCREDIBLE project in the works that ties in with "Accidental Poet". I have a few pages of notes that need to be organized & I'll post that as the final installment in these updates during the next few days. I will say its something VERY unique that will thrill the most devoted Jewel fans to no end! (It's NOT a Jewelstock 2,though...) Think about this: What would be most fascinating to the most devoted Jewel fan? Would it be a peek inside her writing journals & poetry? How about watching her take journal entries & poetry & molding them into songs? Or perhaps being a fly on the wall when she was alone & working out material? Or hanging out in the studio while she was recording, perhaps? Well, these are not as hypothetical as one might think. The incredible new project I alluded to earlier is going to let you in on precisely those situations. Later this year, Jewel will begin releasing the first in an ongoing series (yes, ongoing series) of approximately 30 minute videotapes which will show all the aspects of Jewel's creative process. Songs will be explored from their earliest form (journal entries & poetry) through their evolution to completed songs, recordings & performances. These videotapes will also contain current interview footage of Jewel explaining how she does it. They will contain footage of Jewel writing, in the studio alone working out songs, as well as recording & performing. Camera's were set up & running while she was alone in the studio. You'll be able to see her literally working journal entries & poetry into songs, talking & singing to herself & all the stages she goes through during the creative process. Everyone left the room/studio(no cameraman) & the cameras roll while she is working, to capture the side that no-one sees. This series of videotapes are also to be called "Accidental Poet" & should be truly amazing. I don't think any songwriter/poet has ever been so open in letting people see their muse in action like this. It's a totally unique project that is sure to be very compelling & fascinating to all EDAs! That, my friends, is the end of all the info from last Saturday. My apologies for dragging it out somewhat but I think you'd agree that a LOT of information was covered. I'm now putting my sore typing finger (yes, I only have one!) to rest. I look forward to seeing more of you at shows & I now return you to your regularly scheduled programming. :-) Best wishes, Alan (MrBB) From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Fri Feb 7 08:56:12 1997 Return-Path: Received: by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4) id IAA08205; Fri, 7 Feb 1997 08:56:12 -0500 Message-Id: <199702071356.IAA08205@jane.smoe.org> Date: Fri, 7 Feb 1997 00:59:58 -0500 (EST) From: ABershaw@aol.com To: jewel-news@smoe.org Subject: Jewel News: TOUR DATES: Keep this in mind on the tour dates Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk X-To-Unsubscribe: Send mail to "jewel-news-request@smoe.org" X-To-Unsubscribe: with "unsubscribe" as the body. content-length: 440 Hi all, Please keep in mind that the tour dates I've posted have MANY unconfirmed venues. Hey EDAs, Below are the set lists for the two tapes that Dan, Alan, a bunch of branches & I will be now 'treeing'. (For you digest subscribers, it MAY be in the last digest, as I won't know for sure until I send this) Like I said in the main post on these two trees, the Boston tape is the same show that some of you may already have, but believe me this re-master is superior and is a 'must have'. Two quick notes: ALL BRANCH APPLICANTS - all branches for this tree have been chosen and notified. All not chosen have been notified also. If you applied as a branch and have NOT received your notification, please Email me. Alan Bershaw (MrBB) mastered this tape. I want to wrap up the leaf requests within 3 or 4 days. HOW TO EMAIL ME: ALL I need to know is your full name, and where you live. While it's not really important in the USA, I'm going to try to do geographical leaf/branch assignments. So, what I need you to do is to Email me with the SUBJECT (NOT the body) of your Email in the following format: leaf, state or country where you live Please, do not put a 'space' after the comma. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Examples: leaf, alaska leaf, england leaf, new zealand leaf,Israel leaf, canada leaf, new hampshire leaf, california leaf, guam Please, NO abbreviations either, spell it all out. Your fellow Everyday Angel, Mike (please read the part below if new to tape trees) ____________________ WHAT IS A TAPE TREE: A Tape Tree on this list is a system utilized to distribute hard to get music of Jewel, be it live recordings or cuts from promotional releases and/or interviews. After Jewel performs, all EDA's who go to any of Jewel's concerts go backstage to meet Jewel. I would love this because I hope to meet Jewel. This is a good idea cause after she performs she can hang backstage for a little while and meet the EDA's. This would be the ultimate experience for me because meeting Jewel would be a great thing!!!! Even if it is for a minute or two, I would be happy top meet her......I am sending this to abershaw also cause I know you talk to Jewel's mom on the phone and maybe mention it to her!!!! You might be able to find it in music stores that sell Taylors. Bejeweled On October 3, Taylor regional sales manager Rick Fagan performed at the Cafe Crema coffeehouse in San Diego. As he was starting his opening set, he noticed a young woman who looked vaguely familiar, although in most ways she seemed indistinguishable from the other college-age and older Gen Xers. On closer inspection, Fagan realized it was platinum selling singer-songwriter Jewel. Apparently, no one else recognized the former San Diegan; she sat alone, undisturbed, absorbed in writing something. Fagan invited her up to sing a couple of songs, and Jewel obliged (borrowing Fagan's 612-C). Even then, some didn't know who she was. One patron approached Fagan and remarked that it must be nice to have someone open for him and "warm up the crowd." The ubiquitous Jewel has been almost constantly in the national entertainment news since her debut album, Pieces of You, was released in 1995. She explained to Fagan that she was back in town for a rest, after a whirlwind of activity that included touring, appearances on network television, performances at major music festivals, and work on her follow-up album. As for her caffeine-fueled scribbling, Jewel said she likes to write poetry and lyrics in coffeeehouses, and has done so since her days as a struggling performer in San Diego venues. But the kicker is that Jewel finally got to perform at Cafe Crema. A couple of years earlier, during her now celebrated tenure as the favorite performer at the nearby Inner Change coffeehouse, Jewel had auditioned for a gig at Cafe Crema. The then-owner turned her down. He didn't think she was good enough. As someone earlier noticed on a tour poster, this tour is called "The Tiny Lights Tour". This is in reference to how the stage will be lit by candlelight. :-) These are going to be acoustic performances & that is all part of the striving for an intimate atmosphere. Lenedra also mentioned a Jewel quote which I can't remember exactly, but it was along the lines of "We are all tiny lights for each other". Actually, I think thats it. Also Jewel just taped MTV's Grammy show. Once again, she'll be actually hosting this show. I'm not sure when this airs, so keep an eye out & post it here (& cc it to me please) if you find out. The highly anticipated Charlie Rose show will be taped on 2/25/97 in NYC. Lenedra didn't know when it will be broadcast, but another listmember just wrote with this info: <> So it may air the same day in some areas & later in others. Personally, I'm really looking forward to this show. Charlie Rose is brilliant & he's sure to do the most intellectual interview of Jewel yet broadcast. Lastly, over the past few months many of you have written me privately, asking if Jewel's management would consider setting up a scene similar to Melissa Etheridge's Information Network which allows members to purchase preferred tickets, etc. Although I don't know if this will happen, they are now considering it & are in contact with the appropriate people. Thats about it. Hope to see some of you again in Providence & New Haven. And to meet a few more of you, too! :-) Alan(MrBB) From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Wed Feb 19 12:14:37 1997 Return-Path: Received: by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4) id MAA22311; Wed, 19 Feb 1997 12:14:36 -0500 Received: from emout01.mail.aol.com by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4) id MAA22240; Wed, 19 Feb 1997 12:04:19 -0500 From: ABershaw@aol.com Received: (from root@localhost) by emout01.mail.aol.com (8.7.6/8.7.3/AOL-2.0.0) id MAA24879; Wed, 19 Feb 1997 12:04:09 -0500 (EST) Date: Wed, 19 Feb 1997 12:04:09 -0500 (EST) Message-ID: <970219120404_1980003934@emout01.mail.aol.com> To: ducksoup@spectra.net, jewel@smoe.org, jewel-news@smoe.org Subject: Jewel News: The "Extraordinary" picture of Jewel on HITS Magazine. Try this schedule: Four or five performances a day, starting at 8 a.m. at a high school, then at one or two radio stations, a record store, and finally a regular gig at night. Then drive an average of three hours to the next city, get three hours sleep and do it all again. If success can still be measured by hard work, then Jewel has earned every bit of hers. ``I did that for a year and a half,'' says Jewel, whose fresh-sounding album ``Pieces of You'' has sold 2 million copies and spun off hit singles in ``Who Will Save Your Soul'' and ``You Were Meant for Me.'' Jewel is up for two Grammy awards, including best new artist (a category she won at the recent American Music Awards) and she sold out tonight's Orpheum Theatre date in 24 hours. ``I quit the high school shows, but I still do several performances a day when I'm on tour,'' says Jewel. Jewel's work ethic has won her a wildly diverse audience. ``It gave me a fan base that's every age, every race, and every sexual preference. But really, I'm a big dork of rock 'n' roll. I'm not hip, and I'm not a coolster. I'm just a kid with an acoustic guitar who keeps slinging it out.'' Jewel, 22, has been slinging it since she was 8 years old doing barroom gigs with her father in Alaska, where she grew up on a 700-acre homestead in the town of Homer. She later wrote ``Who Will Save Your Soul'' at age 17 (the song is ``about how nobody can know you, we rarely understand ourselves'') and most of the rest of her debut disc at 19. ``I'm still learning,'' she says. ``I have no pretense of having arrived.'' Her success is partly due to her label, Atlantic Records, sticking by her - a rarity in today's fickle pop market. But it's mostly due to an old-fashioned relentlessness. Jewel seemed to take every gig that came up. She was an opening act for such varied folks as Bob Dylan (``He asked me later to recite some of the lyrics of my songs, but I was too embarrassed''), the Ramones, Neil Young, Peter Murphy, Belly, Dave Matthews Band, Liz Phair, Edwin McCain, and Catherine Wheel. How could she adjust to all those audiences? ``Everybody has a heart. Everybody has hope. As long as it's sincere music, people are going to be sincere about hearing it,'' she says. Backed by a cellist and percussionist, she's now on her first theater headlining tour, titled ``The Tour of Tiny Lights.'' ``I put a lot of time into the lighting, and I think it makes for a certain mystical experience. There are a lot of pathways of candles on stage. It will be theatrical.'' Jewel is already recording her next album, this time with producer Peter Collins - a fellow chameleon who has worked with Rush, Nanci Griffith, and the Indigo Girls. ``It think it's going to show a lot of growth,'' she says. ``I know that all I have to do is be sincere. That takes a lot of the pressure off.'' (Rachel's cookies got an aknowledgement on stage later, too! :-) After hanging at our place for a few hours, we headed down to New Haven. We showed up around 4:30 & when I walked in the venue, Jewel was sitting at the lighting console playing with lighting effects. We chatted for a little while & she seems extremely happy & enjoying the tour so far. I had known that Jewel's road manager was an old aquaintance of mine from my days of hangin with the Cowboy Junkies, but I was very pleasantly surprised to discover her new soundman, monitor man & lighting director were also all people I knew from past travels. All great guys & one hell of a team! I hung out & watched everyone rehearse for about 90 minutes. She did a few new things that are still in the formative stages as well as rehearsing cello/percussion arrangements of a few favorites. And although not performed yet (or in a long time for that matter), she ran through a good 15 minute version of "Adrian" with Steve Poltz, that had a bunch of verses she's never performed. It was loose but interesting. So that may be making a return appearence soon.... After the rehearsals they soundchecked a few songs & broke for dinner. We headed down the street & ordered some dinner ourselves. Jared & a friend(sorry, forgot your name) popped in and said hi. They took off to find some other EDAs & moments later Dennis Harris surprisingly walked in & joined us. We usually watch TV while eating, but Dennis is so much more enjoyable! :-) Now onto the show: The Rugburns were great & very well recieved. I haven't figured out setlist on them but Jewel came out at the end of their set & performed a song literally written yesterday that was quite good. I'm not sure of the title, but it begins with the line "My Body Is Changing". The Rugburns ended their 45 minute set with "I'm Gonna UPS My Heart Next Day To You". After a brief intermission Jewel's set began. I know its been mentioned that Jewel is using a setlist, but in actuality its just a "skeletal" list of maybe 10 songs. She strays considerably from this list & adds other songs whenever the mood strikes, so don't believe any rumours of "no spontenaity". OK. Here's the setlist: Near You Always Don't 1000 Miles Away Satallite Stranger From The East (another new one-debut performance-great!!) Foolish Games You Were Meant For Me (duet w/Steve) Run Tonto Run Deep Water Ain't No Lookin Back Little Sister Behind The Wall Morning Song Old Lovers House [dedicated to MrBB (insert BIG smile here)] (also with Steve) All The Animals Fragile Flame Angel Standing By encores #1: Who Will Save Your Soul Amen encores #2 Love Is A Rose (w/Steve) Chime Bells Thats it. I was going to watch it just to see her Dad on National TV for the first time. :-) Alan (MrBB) From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Thu Feb 27 17:05:12 1997 Return-Path: Received: by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4) id RAA16728; Thu, 27 Feb 1997 17:05:12 -0500 Date: Thu, 27 Feb 1997 17:05:12 -0500 Message-Id: <199702272205.RAA16728@jane.smoe.org> Received: from echo.imagen.net by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4) id OAA14667; Thu, 27 Feb 1997 14:53:34 -0500 Received: from adrian ([204.244.138.69]) by echo.imagen.net (post.office MTA v1.9.1 **** trial license expired ****) with ESMTP id AAA381 for ; Thu, 27 Feb 1997 11:52:30 -0800 From: howenow@imagen.net (Adrian Duplessis) To: Subject: Jewel News: Jewel is loved in the Pacific Northwest Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk X-To-Unsubscribe: Send mail to "jewel-news-request@smoe.org" X-To-Unsubscribe: with "unsubscribe" as the body. content-length: 335 Jewel's shows in Seattle (March 28, Paramount Theatre) and Vancouver (March 29, Massey Theatre) have both sold out (and tickets have been on sale for only a short time). To: "'jewel@smoe.org'" Subject: From this weeks' Boston Phoenix Here's a review of last week's Boston show from this week's Boston Phoenix. The reviewer gets some song titles and lyrics wrong, but she probably never heard a lot of this material before... Jeff ----------------------------------------------------------------------- --- Natural gem Jewel charms at the Orpheum by Joan Anderman Jewel is at that profoundly brief, luminous moment in life when the irrepressible blush of her youth and the emerging depth and breadth of her talent converge, and she throws a truly radiant light. What a surprise. Her debut CD, Pieces of You, released two years ago this week, was promising yet burdened with noodling folk tunes and navel-gazing adolescent poetry. But Jewel has found humor and wit and a new finesse with her sometimes stunning crazy quilt of a singing voice. Not to suggest that she's abandoned her coffeehouse roots for a slick stage show. At a sold-out Orpheum show last Friday (with openers Rugburns) she was loose and natural as ever, down to the flowing, flowered dress and bare, fresh-scrubbed face. Jewel has, simply, ripened. Surely the last two years spent opening for Bob Dylan, Neil Young (an early supporter whose Northern California studio she recorded in), the Ramones, goth-rocker Peter Murphy (an especially bizarre pairing), and Belly, among others, stirred her creative juices. A good half of her set at the Orpheum was devoted to new material, a wryly exuberant batch of songs that by comparison made the tunes from her album sound plodding and puerile. "I got to sing with Bob Dylan; I got to smell his garlic breath. That's how cool I am!" she reported (one of several outbursts celebrating her freshly minted star status) in introduction to the Dylan-inspired "Sometimes It Can Be That Way," an acerbic tome crammed with dry quips like "I'm sorry if Jesus died for my sins, I promise it'll never happen again." After seeing her in concert, I can understand why Jewel's record company (Atlantic) bucked industry protocol and stuck with her while Pieces of You languished for more than a year after its release (the wait has paid off; the album, now double-platinum, has been on the Billboard album charts for a year and is in the Top 10). She's a natural performer who turns on in direct proportion to turning on her audience. On a spare stage scattered with bunches of red roses and a massive cluster of white candles, Jewel opened with an a cappella rendering of "Near You Always," followed by "Morning Song" -- both lightweight folk ballads. She can gild the simple song, though, with low murmurs, throaty wails, girlish patter, and soaring soprano meanderings. There are shades of both Joans (Baez and Osborne), Emmylou Harris, and Rickie Lee Jones -- especially on her first single, "Who Will Save Your Soul, " which itself sounds uncomfortably similar to any number of Rickie Lee tunes. It's a winsome, jazzy piece that begs for improvisation, but Jewel's live performance rarely strayed from the recording's licks and melodies. She did let herself stretch on the new stuff, thrilled, I imagine, to be charting new territory. "Run, Tonto, Run" was an earnest blues-rocker. "It's Nothing Without Love" was a lovely blithe waltz. "I Love Boston" is a spontaneous(-sounding) recitation of her experiences at local landmarks -- T.T. the Bear's Place, the Middle East, Mama Kin, the Fenway, Harvard Square, etc. (Jewel loses big points if she revises this bit in every city). And then there was "My Own Private God's Gift to Women," a power-punk retort to an asshole who picked her up hitchhiking: "I've been saving myself my whole life for a slimeball like you/I'm so desperate I'll do your mom and you." Glorious strains of cello, a delicate smattering of percussion, and Jewel's acoustic guitar adorned the gentler songs; occasional backbone was supplied by members of the opening act, Rugburns, a local San Diego folk-pop trio whose singer/guitarist, Steve Poltz, is Jewel's good buddy and songwriting partner. Rugburns deserve a listen, and better still a look: three cute guys in a line, bouncing in unison and playing really smart Western-inflected folk rock on acoustic guitar, acoustic bass, and snare drum, and making more music than a lot of bigger, louder bands crank out. Tongues rammed in cheek, they investigated the twisted corners of love and heartache in songs like "Baby I'm Gonna Have To Give You Up for Lent," "The Impala of Love," and "Daddy, She's a Goddess (Can We Keep Her)," on which Jewel made an early appearance, a cowboy's dream in jeans and boots, dancing like a giddy kid and singing like an angel. There's the heart of Jewel's appeal: she's a 22-year-old Gen Xer who doesn't trade in anger and angst, and a polished, proficient vocalist who hits bad notes 'cause they feel right. She's a sweet girl who flips off obnoxious fans. She wrote a punk song and sang a lullaby. Jewel yodels, sexily. Now that's cool.
