Hey there! The Launch CD-Rom has an audio track of "Who Will Save Your Soul" as well as a video perfomance. After WWSYS, Jewel gives an "interactive" interview. The highlight of the interview is "WEBSTOCK" where she discusses how and why JewelStock occurred. Hi all EDAs, As some of you know, various situations have developed behind the scenes, that are preventing the distribution of Jewelstock Tapes from being the totally pleasurable experience that it should be. I personally have been approached both before & after JewelStock, by people obviously trying to get the tapes for the wrong reasons (bootleg manufacturing & sales). For the most part, it hasn't been too difficult a problem, because most were not even on the list. They were simply told to go away. However one person ON THE LIST presented Mike & I with a BIG moral dilemma. He offered to buy tapes from the masters in order to make CDs. This was an obviously bad move on his part. Since then he's claimed he won't do it, but I could not let this go by without being concerned for Jewel's best interests first. (I love being a listmember & enjoy related list projects, but my primary responsibility is to Jewel & Lenedra.) Added note from Mike: I too have shared that responsibility to Jewel & Lenedra in this project, that is one reason we had to set deadlines, for which we received *some* flak. It was partially to weed out possible bootleggers who just heard of the tapes and signed on JUST to get them. Our responsibilities included eliminating obvious bootleg CD potential. Both Mike & I spent a considerable amount of time & money on long distance phone discussions, wondering how best to deal with this list member/CD maker situation. Since this person was on the list, we wanted to avoid any bad feelings...it wasn't easy. I've corresponded with Lenedra periodically about these things. It pained me to do it, but I felt it my responsibility. Today, Lenedra called me. We spent some time discussing the situation. Jewel & Lenedra's position on bootlegs & this related dilemma are now perfectly clear. First let me tell you, without any room left for doubt, they DO NOT want ANY CDs made of this material, PERIOD. Do NOT have them made even for your OWN listening pleasure. Bootleggers have been known to employ CD manufacturers to let them "know when something interesting comes along". They could make a copy for a bootlegger without you even knowing it. Lenedra has asked me to relay to the list that ALL available LEGAL action will be taken in regards to anyone found to be involved in either the MANUFACTURING or SALE of unauthorized Jewel CDs. This is *serious* folks. No one is against the fun we have trading tapes. That is done FREELY & it's understood that trading is OK. But this CD stuff is a whole different thing & definitely will reflect BADLY on the list should it be condoned or promoted. Unfortunately, the one list member who has lost our trust will be excluded from participation in the JewelStock Tapes tree. I'm sure he can get tapes on his own, & we can only hope that out of caring for the list & Jewel, he does nothing illegal. This list member does claim to love the list & respect Jewel. I sincerely want to believe him. (Me too - Mike) I feel bad that this situation happened, but now everything is clear on Jewel & Lenedra's position concerning these tapes. I just want everyone to simply enjoy the tapes in the spirit that they were given. Love 'em but respect the wishes of the giver....Jewel. I understand that as of today, all but one branch has their tapes in hand or done & on the way. We turn it over to the branches to take care of the leafs. And the leafs to take care of newbies. Mike & my part of this is essentially done. We have done our best. It is now up to each EDA to simply enjoy the tapes & do your individual part to keep them safe. Mike & I sincerely hope we can all get past this low spot & get back to the things that made this list great: Friendship, Respect & Great Music! EDAs - Here's the first half of the entire interview from the Lauch CD ROM, issue #9. It was at the site that Crash Boy posted ____________ Part 1 of 2: "Overnight Success" is one of those terms that often is misused in describing the apparently meteoric rise of some new talent. And while it is understandable that casual music industry observers may have slapped this tag on Alaskan singer-songwriter Jewel, it is an egregious error nonetheless. At age 22, this artist can claim a debut album, Pieces of You, which cracked Billboard's Top 200 Album Chart and quickly ascended into the Top 30, while her hit song "Who Will Save Your Soul" reached No. 11 on Billboard's Hot 100 Singles chart. But make no mistake: Jewel began traveling on this path to success when most of us were still on the playground. This hardworking chanteuse was only eight years old when she and her father embarked on an open-ended tour of clubs and roadhouses, which eventually led Jewel to coffee shops and amphitheaters. Jewel is the cover artist featured on Issue No. 9 of the LAUNCH CD-ROM. Visit the Hang, where you can engage her in an interactive interview and hear a live, acoustic and exclusive recording of her hit "Who Will Save Your Soul." The following interview was conducted by LAUNCH executive editor Dave DiMartino: LAUNCH: You've had remarkable success with your debut album. Looking back on the process, can you think of anything that led you to the place where you are today? JEWEL: It took a lot of touring. In the beginning, a lot of radio stations said [my music] was unplayable, and video shows and TV stations said it was unlistenable. Which was fine, because I never expected to sell a lot of albums with this one; it was just supposed to be a time capsule of where I was. I was 19 and just learning to write songs and play guitar. And I know that hard wood grows slowly, and if I wanted to have a longterm career like Neil Young, it would just take touring. I grew up doing live tours and playing in bars, so it was what I love to do. I was just glad to not be living in my car anymore, so I just toured. I would do 40 cities every 30 days, four shows a day; I worked a lot. I had a really good time, and got enough of a groundswell following to just keep playing. And my label kept me out long enough that people couldn't ignore me anymore. Radio had to start playing the songs. LAUNCH: Have you always wanted to be a singer, a songwriter? JEWEL: When I was 18, I went through a premature mid-life crisis. So many of us are asked to compromise our pride and health in order to have these roofs over our heads. And I didn't know how to face consciousness everyday just passing time. I didn't feel like I had any purpose in my life. My hands and my creativity was going to waste. But I never even thought I could sing and make a living because that was a hobby. A lot of us just aren't taught that something you love can make you money. It wasn't until I got fired from my last job that I decided: That's it. I don't care. I'd rather die and drop out of the world rather than wake up everyday and be so unhappy. I never thought I'd get a record deal; I just wanted to eat and do something I liked. It turned into this. And it's been a real blessing. LAUNCH: I've never been to Alaska. What is it like there? Did you enjoy growing up there? JEWEL: I loved being raised there. There was a lot of silence and open space. In some ways we're sculpted by our environments. Our flesh is sculpted by what is around us, as well as our psyches. . By silence. In silence you hear who you're going to become. You create yourself in silence. When you're surrounded by beauty and open space, it inspires you and it makes you feel that there's some sort of divine presence out there. Unlabeled. Having that as a youth--going through hard times--it kept me sane. As well as the discipline of being raised on a large homestead. That taught me a lot about doing what I'm doing now. LAUNCH: Did living on a homestead impact your life, the way you look at things? JEWEL: Probably only in a good way. I like people a lot, I wasn't raised to mistrust them. I was raised to be awake--to not kid yourself about people. I believe people are basically good; we all come from the same place, we all have fear. We want to be loved. We all want passion in our lives. It doesn't matter if you're rich or homeless, it's all the same. LAUNCH: You mentioned going through hard times. Is your life better now than it was before? Do you feel like you've had tougher times than the average person? JEWEL: It's hard to compare lives because everybody's bottom is their own bottom. Everybody experiences abuse in their own ways. It was a hard time, but I never felt I was given something I didn't have the tools to get over. Ultimately, my life forced me to figure out what I wanted to do. Which I think happens when you don't recognize the signs early enough. You get hints: "Hint, hint, hint, Jewel." Until I hit a wall. But that's nothing compared to what people spend their whole lives doing. LAUNCH: Coffee shops have really taken off as a big social thing in the past few years, and it seems the coffee shop looms large in your legend. In fact, you recorded much, if not all, of Pieces of You in the coffee shop that became your home base, right? JEWEL: It's the only place I really played. I was raised as a professional singer: Since I was eight, my dad and I made our living doing barroom tours. I lived in my car; a lot of the businesses there wanted you to play for $25 and food. But I couldn't afford that. This was my living, not just a hobby. So I found this coffee shop that just opened, was looking for business. They said I could keep the door money, and they would keep the coffee sales. And so I stuck with them and we both struggled together to get more people to come in. LAUNCH: And were you discovered there? Is that how you got your record deal? JEWEL: I just got a good word of mouth going. It was never a goal to make demos for records labels. Word spread somehow to A&R in L.A. and then one night someone from Virgin came down, and this was before I knew about the beauty of expense accounts. I bought him a burrito; he told me I could make a record. Then another label came and another label came. It happened like that. end of part 1 of 2 From owner-jewel-news Mon Oct 7 09:12:41 1996 Return-Path: Received: by smoe.org (4.1/SMI-4.1-hack1) id AA01369; Mon, 7 Oct 96 09:12:41 EDT Message-Id: <9610071312.AA01369@smoe.org> Date: Sun, 06 Oct 1996 08:43:47 -0400 From: ducksoup@spectra.net To: jewel-news@smoe.org Subject: Jewel News: MEDIA: The Launch interview - Part 2 of 3 Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk X-To-Unsubscribe: Send mail to "jewel-news-request@smoe.org" X-To-Unsubscribe: with "unsubscribe" as the body. EDAs - Here's the SECOND (of 3) part of the entire interview from the Lauch CD ROM, issue #9. It was at the site that Crash Boy posted ____________ Part 2 of 3: (I re-edited to 3 parts) LAUNCH: You obviously are no stranger to live gigs. You must travel a lot. Do you like being on the road? JEWEL: I'm learning to like it. It's very discombobulating for me. I'm definitely not a Willie Nelson who loves being on the road. There's not enough quiet; I can't be alone ever. I'm talking about myself all the time, and that becomes absurd. But I'm learning ways to keep myself quiet in my head, and remind myself of beauty. To keep inspired. But my spirit isn't really happy. I'd rather not be doing this, I don't care enough anymore. I would rather be in Alsaska. I'm not doing this for fame or money. I'm doing it because it serves my spirit and it reminds people to live their dreams. That's needed in the world now. I love it for that reason. I am made for it. I can sing four shows a day and not ruin my voice. I'm learning how to be good at it. LAUNCH: It must have been a real eye opener for you to go out on tour. You've played now with Neil Young and Bob Dylan. That must have been amazing! Tell me about it. JEWEL: It didn't start out that way! At first nobody would take me out on the road, so I had to do my own coffee shop tour. The only band the label could get to go out with me was another Atlantic band. They pawned me off on a goth band, Peter Murphy. So I toured acoustically--never with a band--for a goth band. It was hilarious. I'm now sensitive to people who've had their fangs filed. But they bought the album, so that's good. If anything, I got to appreciate such diverse people. Going on between punk bands in front of 20,000 people, between the Ramones and Everclear. It taught me to be diverse and never judge people, and to know that my crowd is anyone with a heart and has ears. It taught me to be very diverse. And it really paid off. Touring with Bob Dylan was a huge dream. Neil is incredible. LAUNCH: Who inspires you? JEWEL: There's certain people who have never lost the creative integrity of what they're doing. Neil [Young] is like that. It's very rare. The world has become very immediate. It's hard to stay in touch with one's creative drive. Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon. I find people like that very inspiring. LAUNCH: What's the coolest thing to ever happen to you in your career? JEWEL: The coolest thing ever? Singing with Bob Dylan. He invited me up on stage. I was blown away. I got to share a mic with him. I sang "I Shall Be Released." And just talking to him is hilarious, you know? LAUNCH: Yodeling is another factor that looms large in your legend. What's the story there? Are people always asking you to yodel for them? JEWEL: I've been doing it since I was six and it's always been a very big deal to people. I enjoy doing it but when I become a slave to it, it's frustrating and it shows. Like if I'm doing a love song and someone yells: "YODEL!!!" I find that annoying. But generally, I like to entertain a crowd and give them what they want. LAUNCH: Both of your parents are artists and performers in their own right. You mentioned touring barrooms with your dad as a child. Do you ever feel pressured by your folks to live out their dreams? Is it hard for you that you've become so successful and yet they haven't? JEWEL: I think that happens often in people lives. . .a child living some dream you put on them vicariously. Fathers do it to their sons. Mothers are jealous of beautiful daughters. It's the same with fans living their dreams through a hero. As a kid, these women with Marlboros and voices straight from the bowling alley would come up to me and say: "I could have been an opera singer, but I married old Hank here and now I have to cook him hashed browns. So you have to do it for us." And as a little girl, I was really burdened by that because I realized how tragic people's lives were for not following their dreams. You see that a lot in my parents' generation and my grandfather's generation. Then it was a much more sacrificial time. My generation gets to benefit for the first time figuring out, okay, we know money isn't the answer. So what am I here to do? I feel blessed. My parents aren't particularly like that. My mom was always very encourageing. My dad, was like "don't live in your car, go to school." My dad always wanted to be a songwriter, he still does. I think he's proud. But they're human. There are jealousies; it's all human. EDAs - Here's the rest of the entire interview from the Lauch CD ROM, issue #9. It was at the site that Crash Boy posted ____________ Part 3 of 3: LAUNCH: You just finished your second album. But you didn't do this one live, did you? Why not? JEWEL: The reason I did the first one live was that I didn't know how to sing in a studio. I sing better in front of people. I get a better vocal performance. Being a studio artist is a different beast, a different animal. I've gotten more comfortable with it over the years; it's the same with my guitar playing. I just want an album to show where I am creatively. I've grown. My hands have gotten better at articulating how I would like them to represent me and my thoughts. So I feel like it's a more accurate reading of what I am. I'm better able to express myself both lyrically and musically. It's a fun process instead of a scary one this time. LAUNCH: I've heard you like to surf. Can you describe for me one of your greatest surf memories? JEWEL: I like every wave, they're all really exciting to me. There's always your first wave. . .I was kind of stupid, actually, I didn't know enough to be afraid. I went down with some guys after one of my shows. They looked like surfers. We went down to Mexico. I'd never caught a wave before. It was a pretty big day, five foot overhead, rocky place, beautiful point. A big wave came, I caught it, made it, got inside, and looked at how big the waves were, got horrified, and I thought what am I doing? But it was a good rush. LAUNCH: How computer-literate are you? JEWEL: I'm not computer literate, I never have been. I was reading Charles Bukowski last night and he has a poem called "My First Computer Poem." And how old was he when he wrote it? 60? I feel like that's how I'll be. Maybe when I'm 60. . . I love the Internet because it takes out the middleman: the record label, radio station, record store. It's the fans who allow me to live my dream, they buy my albums. I find that very humbling. It keeps me going, even when I think the business is suffocating everything beautiful and pure. I have a large Internet fan club, and I was recording in Woodstock, NY. Someone wrote in and asked: Would Jewel do this free concert for us if we all went out to Woodstock? So I put on this free show and 500 kids migrated out from everywhere, camped out. It was so great, they made T-shirts for themselves. All these kids who knew each other from the Internet got to meet for the first time. It was really great. LAUNCH: Do you have a favorite album, or an artist? JEWEL: I think the Replacements' Let It Be is one of the coolest records. k.d. lang, Ella Fitzgerald--they're very cool. LAUNCH: It must be weird for you; so many people have bought your record and probably think they know who Jewel is. How do you think people perceive of you? JEWEL: I don't know. I'm always portrayed in the media as a naive 22-year-old trying to impress adults. What can I say? On the radio: If anyone lives in Houston-the show is at the Art Institute of Houston. Also the show will be broadcast on 104 KRBE. So get your tape machines ready. On the net:You're going to need Realaudio and Enhanced CU See Me- yes, the session is on video on the net!!! If you go to http://www.krbe.com and click on the See&Hear hot button. The CUSEEME is a LARGE download(5-6megs), so don't try to do this on Friday afternoon! Does anyone have the processor and the memory required to get this on your computer and transfer to video??? The other page is HTTP://www.audionet.com/concerts/jewel They're calling it a "Private session with Jewel", so it sounds very intimate. Audionet calls it "Live and unplugged". This will be so cool-- too bad there won't be a chat function:) The only thing I haven't seen so far is if there will be an archived version available on the net- so somebody's got to get it the first time!!! Now, I'm not saying there's a connection, *but*... The last two Jewel concerts I went to the airlines lost my luggage. This time I drove, and they lost Jewel's luggage! Things that make ya go hmmmm... The reason she didn't get 4 angels (the highest honor) is because it was all just Jewel and her guitar. I missed the band, especially for satellite :( Also, the crowd was a bit unruly. They were downright cruel to the opening act, and too loud during Jewel. This was the largest audience I've ever seen for Jewel, several thousand (I won't guess how many, because I suck at that, but the place was completely full). Of course I got the choice seat right infront of "Obnoxious Boy" and behind "Drunk Guy" and the girl with the shriek that could shatter stone sat dead behind me. My ears will never be the same, and she single handedly ruined my recording. Here's the setlist: Pieces of You Little Sister Satellite Sometimes It Be That Way Morning Song Cold Song You Were Meant For Me Race Car Driver ???? (starts out: "Pop works in the shop till 8") Near You Always Angel Standing By Deep Water Who Will Save Your Soul Chime Bells ENCORE: The Little Bird (first time Jewel sang this one in concert) Amen If anyone knows the name of the song I missed, please email me. She only did one encore, and didn't stay to sign autographs after the concert due to the large amount of people waiting to see her. There was a sign language interpreter off stage left, it was prettty cool to see her sign Jewel's lyrics! I talked with several people before the concert and the only exposure they ever had of Jewel were the songs on PoY and a little bit of her yodeling from the Rosie O'Donnell show. I told them about Jewelstock, her next CD, what to expect at a concert, Jewel's history, call your radio station and demand YWMFM, etc. I met two EDA's up there, Volt and a guy from Guam (sorry I can't remember your name! I'm bad at that and I'm still tired from my drive home last night!) Speaking of the drive, it took me 3 hours to get up there, 3.5 to get back, ended up getting home at 2:30 and just crashed (on the bed, not in the car). I don't see how Garrett and Tom drove cross country!! The drive up was hell, triple digits and I had to crank on my car's heater to keep the engine from overheating. Can you say "Sin-kabob"? But on the way back (11-2:30) I still had the top down on my car so I was happy :) (jealous yet, East Coasters?) - -- Sinjin@ecn.com "Fair Food Rules!!" Hi, long time no news! Jewel had a week off and not a lot new in the way of dates and stuff is happening. She went to LA Monday to tape a song for the Benefit for the Breast Cancer Foundation. At the last minute she asked Lenedra to join her so they do it as a duet. The song is "The Face of Love". It may probably be on the album. They were shot in the lobby of the Pantages theater in LA which is a really awsome theater, I hear. The live show is at that theater on Oct. 13, and the taped show airs on Oct 21 on the Lifetime Channel--I think thats the woman's channel. You know how these dates sometimes change, so check your guides. We were told it was in the evening around 8 or 9pm. Jewel's segment will be shown at the live benefit as well as incorporated in the taping. Hi All, Lupo's turned out to be a show full of surprises. I'm too tired to tell you much about the atmosphere, but a great time was had by Dennis Harris, Chris & Karen Snyder & myself. We apparently were the only 3 EDAs that made it. We all sat together center in the front of the balcony. The club is small so the view was quite nice. The lighting was particularly good too. The set started solo acoustic with: "Pieces Of You" "Little Sister" "Cold Song" "Morning Song" "Race Car Driver" Then we were treated to a great new song which sums up Jewel's current outlook. I'm guessing here, but it seemed obvious that the title is: "Ain't No Looking Back" The band then joined Jewel. The set continued with strong electric versions of: "Satellite" "Sometimes It Be That Way" "Run Tonto Run" Then we were shocked, stunned & amazed when she whipped out a long lost gem from the Innerchange Days! None other than a highly smokin' version of" "MONEY"!! Then came the first electic version that I've heard of: "Grey Matter" followed by an electric version of: "You Were Meant For Me" then a solo acoustic version of: "Near You Always" The band returned and rocked out on: "Love Me Just Leave Me Alone" "Fading Away" She then began an electric attempt at "Fragile Heart" but changed her mind & finished the set with electric versions of: "Foolish Games" "Who will Save Your Soul" At this point we were quite satisfied & didn't expect anything unusual for the encore. Jewel returned to the stage and asked everyone to be very quiet for a moment. I was personally blown away when she performed Lenedra's bedtime lullabye that was so memorable at Jewelstock! Yep. A beautiful accapella version of: "The Little Bird" Followed by: "Chime Bells" Prior to the show, I spoke with her for a little while, and although under a ridiculous schedule lately, she seemed in top form, very happy & she sends her best wishes to the list.------MrBB (Alan) From owner-jewel-news Sun Oct 13 11:51:34 1996 Return-Path: Received: by smoe.org (4.1/SMI-4.1-hack1) id AA19125; Sun, 13 Oct 96 11:51:34 EDT Date: Sun, 13 Oct 96 11:51:34 EDT From: owner-jewel-news Message-Id: <9610131551.AA19125@smoe.org> Apparently-To: jewel-news-outgoing ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Sun, 13 Oct 1996 01:10:27 -0400 From: Hiranya@aol.com To: jewel@smoe.org Subject: Jewel News: HIRANYA: Re: J on Lifetime TV Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk X-To-Unsubscribe: Send mail to "jewel-news-request@smoe.org" X-To-Unsubscribe: with "unsubscribe" as the body. Howdy "newbie" EDAs; There's been alot of questions posted to the list about JewelStock and the JewelStock Tapes lately by "newbies". Also, Alan Bershaw (the man who mastered the tape set) and I have both gotten numerous private EMAILs asking about the tapes....so I figured I'd take a few moments to explain & help out in a few matters. ******************** What was JewelStock? ******************** JewelStock was two concerts that Jewel performed for free, as a gift to the members of this mailing list, in appreciation of what her "internet fans" had done for her. (she has long said that this group has helped her gain her popularity etc.) The "list" was given the resposibility of doing alot of the duties in putting the shows together. Many of us did just that. On July 17 & 18th, she gave those concerts at the Bearsville Theatre in Bearsville NY, about 1 mile from Woodstock. The first show was free, the second one had a cover charge to raise funds for the theatre. Jewel herself performed for free at both shows. At the time, she had been recording her next CD at the Bearsville Studios for about 5 weeks. A&M artist Patty Griffin also performed for free on the first night, opening for Jewel. She is SPECTACULAR, I suggest you buy her CD, "Living With Ghosts". About 150 members of this list (of about 475 members at that time) and their 140 or so guests came from all over the country to spend time in Woodstock and catch one or both shows....and I mean from ALL over the country. They checked in from Frisco, San Diego, Alabama, Washington, Illinois, Ohio, Florida, Michigan...well, you get the picture. Many of us were there for 3 or 4 days, some stayed more. I think I can safely say, all in attendence had a blast and it was clearly the event of the summer for 99% if not 100% of the EDAs there. It was amazing. ******************************************************* What are the JewelStock Tapes and how can I get a copy? ******************************************************* For the benefit of those on the list that could not attend (humorously known as JewelSTUCK), and also for those that were there, Jewel allowed the event to be recorded so that we could distribute the recordings among the list members. It ended up being recorded by a sound crew hired by Atlantic Records. The tapes we have of the event are divided into two stages. Stage One includes everything performed by Jewel at both JewelStock shows EXCEPT the ten songs she performed with her band. It also includes a radio show she performed in Woodstock two days before JewelStock and her appearance on the Rosie O'Donnell show, which was the day before JewelStock. Stage One is a THREE 90-minute tape set, available ONLY in audio cassette format. Stage Two would include those band numbers, and would only be available in audio cassette format. Stage Two is tentatively scheduled for treeing February or March. The Patty Griffin set is not included with either stage. Stage One is what is presently being treed. The tree is now closed, and no more requests are being taken. However, don't weep, read on please. This does *not* mean you cannot get copies of the tapes. When the tree is completed (likely about 4 weeks from now), well over 200 EDA's, and perhaps over 300, will have copies of the tapes. Right now, that figure is at about 130. I suggest that "newbies" wait a good four more weeks. In the mean time join in with the list, have fun, and then when alot more of the list members have their tapes, solicit requests to the list to perhaps have someone dub you a set. I suggest waiting until early November. IMHO, It is not saavy to join the list and immediately start asking for tapes, as some have. That is NOT what this list nor the JewelStock tapes is about nor what it exists for. It is just one facet of this list. (It is a 'nice" facet I must admit) This list exists to spread the word of Jewel, to share in discussion about her, and to make friends while doing it. JewelStock was the epitome of that philosophy. It melded this group into a being of it's own. Please join us. You won't regret it. Again, I ask you to wait it out. Not too many have the tapes right now, although it might seem otherwise due to daily posts from excited EDA who just received their tapes. "Innocence Maintained" "I'm Sensitive" "YWMFM" (with Mexico story) "Near You Always" "WWSYS" I was listening for this, and I think she sang: "SHE says hold my calls from behind cold brick walls; says 'Come here, boy. There ain't nothing for free.'" "Chime Bells" (with Hawaii story) Her singing performance was fine, but between songs I detected an underlying weariness, related no doubt to her hectic schedule. During one of her stories (my memory fails me, AGAIN) she said something like, "This belongs in that Alanis Morissette song," and then she sang the phrase "Isn't it Ironic." She was seated on a stool, and her was fun to watch her wiggle and shake her feet, especially when she sang "Don't." Since I was sitting on the floor, I had a good vantage point for watching her nostrils flare. And YWMFM was number 27 on KRBE's weekend countdown show this morning. Due to problems (that I won't go into again), all concerned want to wait & see if its actually possible for such a huge quantity of listmembers to keep the tapes safe. Patty's management requested that her set not be included unfortunately. Things are always subject to change, & now that the new Jewel CD is scheduled for March, that gives more time for possible reconsideration. If the 4th Tape does happen, & Patty's set is not included, I will discuss with Lenedra, options on including some other rare material to fill a 90 minute tape. I have lots of ideas. It's best that these ideas are not specifically mentioned, because I certainly don't want to dissapoint anyone, should it not happen. Bottom Line: Its all up in the air for now....... Now onto a question that I have gotten from quite a few. I think Toni Dunn was the first to ask this, but I musta (conveniently) missed it at the time. << What happenned to the Delores apology on the Jewelstock Tapes?>> I guess we cant sneak anything by you folks! Jewel asked me to make sure that this & the "baseball bat comment" be deleted from EVERY copy of the tapes for obvious reasons. Although hilarious at the time, she prefered to let the Delores thing die forever. So that's something that was purposely removed from ALL tapes. Lastly, I'd like to thank all those who have continued to help on the Performance Chronology. It'll soon include almost 400 shows & important dates in Jewel's career. In the past few months, many have contributed corrections & additions. Some of the "old timers" that are missing in action have helped greatly! Specifically Steve Ito, Jeff Hanson & Neal Copperman (who along with the help of others)have or are now providing info on most of the famous Innerchange Dates from 94. I know Adam has yet to completely update the site, but soon it will include most of these Innerchange dates. Anyone yet to visit Adam's site, I highly suggest you do so! It's by far the most informative (& just plain incredible) site that exists on Jewel. She says the soul is stifled and suffocated when unable to follow its dream. She is Jewel(Kilcher), 21, thesinger-songwriter-poet-philosopher whose folky, acoustic music--showcased in her first album, Pieces of You--combines 1960s introspection with 1990s style. And that's a good description of Jewel, too. Today, she arrives late, breathless and flushed from the midday Los Angeles heat. She has in tow her boyfriend, Michel, a male model she met at a fashion show. She looks more like a down-home gal ready for chores than a rock star at an interview. But Jewel is, first and foremost, an artist. "One of my favorite things to do is sit and watch people," she says. "I make up their lives to be trabic or boring or brilliant." Jewel's own life has been a combination of these things. She and her two brothers grew up on a 800-acre homestead in rural Homer, Alaska, raised by singer-songwriter parents. Jewel began singing--yodeling, actually--when she was 6, joining her parents onstage at gigs. After her parents split and her mother moved away two years later, Jewel began writing, too, to help herself get in touch with feelings she could not articulate. "It got to the point where if I had a problem with my father, I could never speak it," she says, gently touching her friend's arm as if to make sure of his presence. "I would write four pages and give it to him." But it took Jewel a long time to be able to, as she puts it, "speak from the heart." At 14, she was befriended by a Native American family, who, she says, "took me out to a meadow and said, 'Your life in the future will call for you to speak honestly to people. You don't know how to speak from your heart, and you need to learn how.' I remember going on top of a mountain and trying to say anything honest--just to the wind. I was crying because I couldn't say anything sincere." Meanwhile, Jewel spent summers and holidays with her mother, Nedra, who had moved to San Diego and was working part time teaching nutrition and self-improvement at a spa. It was Nedra who helped develop Jewel's thoughtful side. "She's always urged me to know myself and to be brave and listen to myself," Jewel explains. "She'd urge me to spend 5 days alone in a cabin without anyone coming by, without any TV. I thought I'd go insane. And she'd have me do juice fasts and things like that." All these experiences came together during Jewel's last two years of high school, when she was offered a vocal scholarship to Michigan's Interlochen Fine Arts Academy. There, she began learning guitar, keeping a journal and writing songs. "My two years there were like a turning point," she says. But the biggest turning point came after graduation. Loving the warm weather and the surf, Jewel moved in with her mother in California but had no idea what to do with her life. She took a waitressing job but couldn't stand being chained to a regular schedule. "I was scared. I was 18, and I thought I would have to give up everything I believed in and everything I wanted to do. I just hated life. I cried every day. I was so frustrating. "I finally got fired, and my mom said, 'This is ridiculous. We're going to live in our cars, and we're going to do what we love or die.'" They did just that. Jewel slept in her van, survived on carrots and peanut butter, and played in local coffeehouses. Word of her talent reached Los Angeles, and it wasn'tt long before Jewel signed a record deal. It's a very lucky ending, especially for someone who, as she says, basically "dropped out of the world." "Everything I've ever learned--good and bad--has given immeasurably to what I'm doing now," she says. "I believe I've been guided and helped, and it's very humbling. I think if you demand, 'This is how I want my life to become,' it will. Miracles do happen." ************ That's it! Sorry for any typos, I had limited time to get this done. Hi all, I'm hoping a few of the hard core collectors out there can possibly help me with something during Lenedra & Hiranya's abscence. In an effort to improve the Jewel chronology, I am currently looking for the exact release dates on a few Jewel releases. If you know this info please send it along. The ones I only have vague dates on are: 1.I Shot Andy Warhol Soundtrack 2.The Craft Soundtrack 3.Shiva Diva Doo Wop Indy cassette 4.Save The Linoleum Promo CD 5.Phyllis Barnaby Promo EP I also can't remember when these 2 Movies were released that featured Jewel songs (but not on the actual Soundtracks) They are: 1.The Crossing Guard 2.Clueless I will add these exact release dates so that all of the official releases will soon be noted in the chronology. At the moment, the online chronology is way behind on updated info. In the past few weeks I've gotten a vast amount of information(including ALL the Studio Session dates!) & it's taking a while to update. Some of the things that will soon be added will be: 1. Almost all the exact Innerchange dates from 94 2. All the Studio Session dates 3. Significant (non-performance) dates in Jewel's carreer 4. All "official release" dates of videos & CDs 5. Upcoming scheduled performances & recording session dates And of course there is already approximately 400 live performances & TV appearences already there for those of you into such info. It'll be a while before we can get all this up at the site, but if you'd like to see the info thats already there, then go directly to: http://home.sprynet.com/sprynet/xenomorph/jchrono.htm Thanks for any info you can contribute.----Mr BB From owner-jewel-news Wed Oct 23 00:24:36 1996 Return-Path: Received: by smoe.org (4.1/SMI-4.1-hack1) id AA04129; Wed, 23 Oct 96 00:24:36 EDT Received: from emout11.mail.aol.com (emout11.mx.aol.com) by smoe.org (4.1/SMI-4.1-hack1) id AA03088; Tue, 22 Oct 96 23:17:36 EDT Received: by emout11.mail.aol.com (8.6.12/8.6.12) id XAA06219; Tue, 22 Oct 1996 23:17:09 -0400 Date: Tue, 22 Oct 1996 23:17:09 -0400 From: ABershaw@aol.com Message-Id: <961022231708_1448250939@emout11.mail.aol.com> To: jewel@smoe.org, jewel-news@smoe.org Cc: ABershaw@aol.com Subject: Jewel News: From The BBs-A Thanks idea to Jewel & Lenedra Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk X-To-Unsubscribe: Send mail to "jewel-news-request@smoe.org" X-To-Unsubscribe: with "unsubscribe" as the body. Hi all, With Jewel & Lenedra out of the country & out of touch at the moment, AmyJo & I had an idea tonight. Many people have written to me privately in thanks for the production work on the Jewelstock Tapes. I loved recieving every one of them & I kept them all in a file. I know Jewel & Lenedra would equally enjoy reading your reactions. So....AmyJo & I will compile reactions into one long file that I can print & give them. We figure on doing this over the course of the next few weeks. Then I can give it to them mid-November when they are both at home for 2 weeks. I think that would be the perfect time for them to get it, too. No better time for "thanks" than around Thanksgiving. You can email me "whatever you'd like to say" at: ABershaw@aol.com Please just write "Jewelstock Thanks" in the subject, so we can identify those emails & do this little project when we feel like it. If you've already written me but would like to take the opportunity to write it differently to them, please do. Jewel & Lenedra really have allowed something here that has deeply touched us. I totally agree one can't help but be floored by these performances! And we think letting them know how good you feel about it would be very worthwhile. All I ask is that you keep it in reference to the tapes and/or Jewelstock and try to condense those thoughts to a reasonable length. Remember: We all have each other for rambling on endlessly....... :-) Alan & AmyJo From owner-jewel-news Thu Oct 24 21:51:29 1996 Return-Path: Received: by smoe.org (4.1/SMI-4.1-hack1) id AA19861; Thu, 24 Oct 96 21:51:29 EDT Received: from emout03.mail.aol.com (emout03.mx.aol.com) by smoe.org (4.1/SMI-4.1-hack1) id AA19706; Thu, 24 Oct 96 21:37:24 EDT Received: by emout03.mail.aol.com (8.6.12/8.6.12) id VAA20912; Thu, 24 Oct 1996 21:36:56 -0400 Date: Thu, 24 Oct 1996 21:36:56 -0400 From: ABershaw@aol.com Message-Id: <961024213655_217626485@emout03.mail.aol.com> To: jewel-news@smoe.org Cc: jewel@smoe.org Subject: Jewel News: The "Thank You" thing..... Hi, Krista wrote me with a question others might be wondering, so I adress it here. This compilation of listmember "Thank You" messages to Jewel & Lenedra about Jewelstock Tapes (or JS in general) needs to be printed by the 20th of November so it can be in their hands around Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving just seemed like the perfect time. Both Jewel & Lenedra will be home for two weeks, (the 1st time in well over a year!) & have a better chance to really enjoy this then, too. It still gives almost a month for the remaining leaves to get 'em & write if they want to. We thought of sending a box of actual EDA thank you cards individually sent from all of you, but it seemed unlikely that could be achieved so quickly. It would be more personal & lend itself to creativity and all that so it would've been nicer, I know. I personally like the idea a lot. I know Mike's been thinking about doing something like this, too. (Project withdrawal, ya know) Sounds like a natural for Christmas time to me. So join in on this for now.
