Hi! I guess I get to be the lucky first reviewer of the new You Were Meant For Me single remix, which I got to bring home for a listen tonight! Back on August 1st, Hiranya told us two versions had been recorded. The official release appears to be the one that stayed true to the original album version, not the Flea/T-Bone mix. The instrumentation is very similar to the album, but the mix sounds fuller, more solid, and generally better. The big difference is Jewel's vocal, which she has clearly re-recorded. We saw at Woodstock, and you can hear in this new recording, that Jewel's singing has become much stronger since she recorded Pieces Of You. In the album version of YWMFM, she seemed to improvise her way around a few notes, but her vocals on this single are perfect. There is also some slick vocal harmony through the chorus on the remix, and it's in a slightly higher key, and ever-so-slightly faster, so it sounds a bit brighter. Unfortunately there are no bonus tracks on this CD, but maybe that second we heard about version will surface for a future tree. I didn't say so at the time, but I never did care much for the Juan Patino mix (Phyllis Barnabee version, the one on Radio Angels). It seemed like that one was just manufactured for radio, and I thought the meaning of the song was lost in the rocked-up production, and much of Jewel's own signature along with it. I could be wrong of course, but that's how I heard it. The song as it appears on the new single has all the feeling and expression that makes it so good to begin with, plus great production too. So will the alternative/modern-rock stations play it? I don't know, it's pretty light, and the stations that put WWSYS next to Alice In Chains and Nine Inch Nails might have trouble doing the same with this one. But I think it's a definite add for the Top-40 and AAA staions. And depending on how Atlantic markets this one, it could end up being a huge A/C hit. That is to say, she could end up on the "Lite" stations next to (gag) Michael Bolton, Mariah Carey, and the rest of the focus-group favorites, it's definitely smooth and soulful enough for that format, even if that's not what Jewel is really all about. I can't believe what a cool cover insert Jewel designed for this CD! It's a Jewel pen-or-pencil drawing...if you've seen her drawings of Angels, or the kind of figures she drew for the elusive Shiva-Diva-Doo-Wop or Phyllis Barnabee promos, you'll know what I mean. This one appears to be a self-portrait, a sort-of Jewelly-looking figure with a guitar body and mermaid-type flippers for hands. In the shoulder-length hair she has drawn many little pictures of fishes. Her head is surrounded by...is it a halo, or is it a design meant to portray her thoughts radiating out...I'm not sure, but it's a halo-y type design anyway. Handwritten in a semi-circle above the figure's head is the following message (sic): I CAN'T EXPRESS THE EXCITEMENT OR THE GRATITUDE I feel for all I have been given. I am living a dream because people have helped me . achieve it Thank You.Thank You.Thank You.Thank You. The Thank You's are written right along the halo design around her head. The shape of her left breast modified to resemble a horseshoe, and handwritten around it is "LUCKY Horse.shoe" Her abdomen area is darkened to resemble a stomach, and inside that shape is a fork (the kind you eat with). Inside the circular opening in the acoustic guitar body under the strings is written "Yum". It's signed "Jewel 96". I don't know if this will end up as a CD single in stores or not. But I've never seen an artist express their thanks to either radio or fans on a CD like this before. 'Classy' isn't even a good enough way to describe it. I sent a clip of the new single to Adam's 'Pieces Of Jewel' page, so hopefully he'll have that sample available for all to hear soon if it's not there already. I'm also going to try to get that cover art to him as soon as possible. I don't have a scanner, but there's one at my office, so I'll try to get that done tomorrow, you've got to see it! Best! Hiya Fellow EDA's, This is a bit late, but here's the set list, etc. for the Aug 31 show at Molson Park in Barrie ON. (Jewel's last Neil date if I'm recalling correctly.) Got there a bit late and took a quick scout around for fellow EDAs. No obvious blue ribbons. We met up later, just after Jewel, while Sheldon was talking about people meeting up with friends out at the entrance gates. Jewel's Set List: Pieces of You (lighter story + references to Keanu and Bob Dole) (Big Blue and no band) Satellites (with the band) The Cold Song (I wasn't paying too much attention so I don't know if she made reference to where it was written) (no band) Sometimes It Be That Way (band) Race Car Driver Fading (replete with K-Mart reference) Love Me, Just Leave Me Alone Near You Always Carnivore Who Will Save Your Soul Chime Bells (so soon?!) 11 songs. I think pretty much everyone was impressed with the way Jewel managed to win over the audience. Still it was the furthest I've ever been away at a Jewel concert and the only time I've seen Jewel with a really large crowd and outdoors. She was great. I was standing just in front of three rather rough and tough looking gentlemen who did not seem overly impressed at first. I think they were there to see the Gin Blossoms. By the end of Jewel's set though, they were laughing at the funny stuff and seemed to be really getting in to things. It was an amazing site to watch close up. I really, _really_ like the band version of SIBTW, it rawked and I didn't think I would like it that much; its something I was really glad I was wrong about. Did Jewel do Love Me, Just Leave Me Alone at the Opera House gig earlier in the year? I remember Carnivore, but I don't remember that. I like LM,JLMA best out of her really new stuff. It was nice to meet up with the EDA group afterwards; to meet Dan S. finally, and see Steve I and Christine and Sheldon and I think I'm losing track... :-) Take Care! OK, angels, here's the 411 on Jewel's appearance at the aids benefit in L.A. on October 5: Jewel is one of the headliners, along with Joan Osborne, Soul Asylum, Presidents of the USA, and Extra Fancy, at The Concert To Benefit The Pedro Zamora Foundation, educating America's youth about AIDS. The concert will be held at the Olympic Velodrome on the campus at Cal State U. - Dominguez Hills, in southern L.A. County. This ambitious and noble project will be nationally simulcast; major sponsors include MTV, KROQ, Westwood One, and Ticketmeister (although noone I spoke to at Ticketmonster could tell me anything about it). TICKETS GO ON SALE TOMORROW (9/14) AT 10:00 A.M. General admission tickets will cost $25 (plus the usual Ticketmasher ups and extras). The venue can accommodate up to 10,000 people. A limited number of VIP tickets will be available directly through the foundation (that's where you'll find me sitting). At $100 per ticket, you will be benefitting a terrific cause, and that's less than the scalpers will get, but they will go quickly; call the foundation soon, directly, at 213.464.4241. Jewel should be congratulated for her efforts on behalf of this worthy cause. I hope to see you there! Larry G. Anxious Everyday Angels, I hope to post for Leaf signups for the JewelStock Tapes within 48 hours. Just a few last minute details to work out. This tree will be a monster and we are trying to get everything right before we open the door. :) Please note that we will have sign-up "windows/periods" to alleviate the expected _crush_ of EMAILs. We are afraid of my mailbox overloading and leaf requests may be lost. More info will be in the actual sign up post, but in a nutshell the sign up period will look like this: 1st two day period: last names A thru M 2nd two day period: last names N thru Z final 3 day period: anyone who missed their 2 day window In other words, you have a whole week to sign up. Just do it in your period or the last three days. The signup period will be one week and then the tree will close for leaf signups permanently. Also, there is a cutoff date in effect. A leaf must have been a list member as of today to be able to sign up as a leaf. Please don't ask for an explanation. It just that it's something that must be done to make the job of running this tree a heck of a lot easier and Alan & I feel it's the best way to alleviate some of the fears that Lenedra expressed to us at JewelStock. Do not worry if someone misses the 7 day period or the cutoff date. There will likely be 400 or so tape sets out there. If a leaf missed the signup, we are sure they could get a copy from anoher leaf. Thanx for bearing with us (Alan and I). Alot of work has gone into preparing for this and the doors will open very soon. Hi everybody! Jewel heaven for me this weekend. She was on a morning program thingy called Recovery. She sung WWSYS then talked to the host-gut for almost 10minutes! Well...prob not that long..but it seemed long! It was great! The first time i've seen her except photos! :) Then she was on Hey Hey its Saturday (which we almost missed out on again cos of the Australian footy!) and she performed WWSYS again but they were majorly rushed so they didnt even talk to her (sniff) Anyway i'm pleased :) Just off on a different angle here; I've just been listening to some of her concerts (thanks Bill!) and theres one thing which has been really bothering me! Theres a few times when shes dedicating a song to someone (eg-Fragile flame) or talking seriously about something that was really important to her and here are these people shouting out "Yodel! Yodel!" It seems really insensitive to me. I hope ..nay, i know none of you angels would be so inconsiderate. She must get fed up with being expected to yodel all the time especially when shes trying to be serious. On Recovery the host asked her about yodeling and she sorta looked "here we go again" :) Anyway.. Mike.. The reason I am asking this is because if I don't recognize the name or EMAIL address of a Leaf's request, I have to check it per my alphabetized log of list members of Jewel, Jewel-digest and Jewel-news. (remember, a Leaf has to have been a member of one of the three Jewel mailing lists as of the date of my log: 12:01am EST Monday September 16th) I am positive I won't recognize many names (i.e. lurkers, infrequent posters-to-the-list etc) The list is partially alphabetized by EMAIL address, partially by name, partially by nickname/handle. If you change any of that, and I don't recognize your name/EMAIL address, I WON'T find it on the list where it should be and I would have to deny your request for tapes. Anxious Everyday Angels, This is it, time to get your tapes!! :) :) Mike thinking to self...."Our father, who art in heaven...." First of all, ALL AUSTRALIAN BRANCHES AND LEAVES!! Please ignore this post, your situation will be handled seperately beginning NEXT week after this portion of the tree closes. Listen (listen?), PLEASE read EVERY word of this post. Many of you are experienced tape "leaves" and/or "branches". However, many are not and may be totally lost in this. This post is written for their benefit...the rookies. So veterans, please bear with me and read all of this ALSO so YOU don't miss anything. Alan and I have spent ungodly hours preparing this tree. Please spend the few minutes it will take to read this whole post. Print it out if you have to. (I suggest you do) A SYNOPSIS OF THE PROCEDURE: This part of the JewelStock Tapes Tree is a THREE tape set. You (the leaf) will EMAIL me during your specified time period (shown later in this post) requesting tapes. I will assign you to a branch and EMAIL the both of you within a week, likely sooner. The branch will contact you when it is time for you to mail him/her blank tapes. That may be two or three weeks from now, so be patient, if it is to be longer, he/she will contact you. You will then send blank tapes per instructions below and/or dictated by your branch. The branch will copy the tapes for you and mail them back. You then listen to these wonderful tapes in bliss. ---------- ELIGIBILITY FOR TAPES: To receive the JewelStock Tapes as a leaf, you must have been a member of either the Jewel, Jewel-Digest or Jewel-News mailing lists as of 12:01am EST Monday September 16, 1996....just a few hours ago. There will be no exceptions. There are very good reasons for this and I will not go in to them now. Please realize, if you have missed this cutoff date, you will very likely be able to get copies from one of the many EDAs who will have these tapes when this tree is completed. (Don't worry about a further generation copy being less quality, I've made a 4th generation test tape and it far and away BLOWS AWAY any Jewel concert tape I've heard) ---------- BLANK TAPES: Due to the _very_ high quality of the master tapes we have of the JewelStock Concerts, we strongly suggest you get Type II blank tapes, and I highly recommend Maxell XLIIS 90 tapes. They DO last longer than Type I and Maxell XLII. You'll be doing yourself a favor by getting better blanks than you usually do. ---------- MAILING BLANK TAPES TO YOUR BRANCH: When your branch notifies you, you will send him/her your THREE blank NINETY MINUTE tapes in a padded/bubblewrap mailer, and will include in the package enough postage to cover the return mailing. If you enclose a $3 "Space Shuttle Stamp" (United States only), your branch can mail it via US priority mail. Canadian Leaves will have been assigned to the Canadian Branch and you can hammer out the postage details with him, but it's pretty much a similar procedure overall. You can mail your blank tapes in one of two basic ways: 1) A smaller padded UNSEALED envelope (containing your 3 blank tapes) placed inside a larger padded one, which will also contain the return postage & a SELF ADDRESSED RETURN MAILING LABEL. You would seal the larger padded envelope (with the smaller one inside) and mail that to your branch. - or - 2) a padded envelope large (but not too large) enough to hold your 3 blank tapes plus the return postage and a SELF ADDRESSED RETURN MAILING LABEL. The branch would use the SAME padded envelope to return the tapes. Method #1 is the prefered method to assure a smooth procedure. Please consider using it. If you are unsure of how much to put on the RETURN mailer for return postage, or to include in the package for the return postage, just do the following at a post office near you: Get the small padded envelope that your branch will be sending the tapes back to you in and put your tapes in it. Place it on the scale (or ask the clerk to do so) and buy STAMPS (not post office pre-paid/DATED ones) to cover the postage. Put that unsealed padded envelope in a larger envelope. Seal it, pay for the postage on it, and mail it. If you don't use a larger envelope to place the smaller one inside, do the same thing (have it weighed) and buy STAMPS, put them inside, seal it, pay for the postage on it and mail it. ---------- WHEN TO EMAIL ME: Please adhere to this schedule as closely as possible. It is for my benefit and YOURS. It is to avoid my EMAIL box from overloading and the loss of EMAILs and requests for tapes. It is based on your LAST name: NOTE - This is an 8 day "window", one more than announced before: 12:01am EST Tues 9/17 thru 12:01am EST Thur 9/19: LAST names A thru M 12:01am EST Thurs 9/19 thru 12:01am EST Sat 9/21: LAST names N thru Z 12:01am EST Sat 9/21 thru 12:01am EST Wed 9/25: ALL last names Don't worry if you go over a boundary by an hour or so, I'm just trying to prevent an EMAIL overflow. Also, don't be in a big hurry to EMAIL me, you can wait until the second day of your "window", you can wait until the last half of the first day of your "window"...I just want to spread it out. On Wednesday 9/25 this tree will be closed for sign-ups permanently. As I said above, if you miss this window, you will very likely be able to get copies from one of the many EDAs who will have these tapes when this tree is completed. ---------- HOW TO EMAIL ME: Do NOT get this wrong! It HAS to be right!! When you EMAIL me, you HAVE TO use the following format in the _SUBJECT_ of the EMAIL, NOT the body, but the SUBJECT!!: all lowercase letters, no capital letters please! example------> leaf - lastname, firstname (country or US territory) example------> leaf - clinton, bill example------> leaf - van dyke, dick (canada) example------> leaf - vega, antonio (puerto rico) You DO NOT have to fill in the country if its the USA (50 states only), US territories please fill in your territory name. All other countries fill in your country name. That's it. No JS, no JewelStock, just --> leaf - lastname, firstname (country) In the body of the EMAIL just tell me you'd like the JewelStock Tapes. ---------- ---------- ---------- ---------- ---------- Ladies and Gentlemen, start your keyboards! ;) Everyone involved in this project sincerely hope you enjoy your tapes, Your fellow Everday Angel, Mike From owner-jewel-news Tue Sep 17 09:04:50 1996 Return-Path: Received: by smoe.org (4.1/SMI-4.1-hack1) id AA22951; Tue, 17 Sep 96 09:04:50 EDT Message-Id: <9609171304.AA22951@smoe.org> Date: Tue, 17 Sep 1996 00:06:38 -0400 From: Mike Connell To: Everyday Angels Subject: Jewel News: JewelStock Tapes: Sign-up Window for last names A thru M is now open Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk X-To-Unsubscribe: Send mail to "jewel-news-request@smoe.org" X-To-Unsubscribe: with "unsubscribe" as the body. Hi All, I can't believe that a few people actually followed the instructions yet sent thier requests to ME! I don't have the time to contact people who did this individually, so if you fall in this catagory, try reading the instructions again. Quite a few people have been working like crazy to make as many people happy as possible. Mike,Dan & I have spent countless hours figuring out how to do this in a logical "sanity preserving" manner. Regarding the cutoff date. This was an absolute neccessity. Otherwise the "official" distribution will never end! Originally, the cutoff date was going to be back when the shows happenned! We decided to accomodate the MANY people that wouldve excluded by extending it till yesterday. What could be more reasonable?? This means we are willing to co-ordinate A LOT MORE REQUESTS than originally planned. Both Mike & I have recieved a bunch of requests from people NOT EVEN ON the lists. That also had an influence on the cutoff date. So now hopefully you all see why it is needed. It is going to be up to leafs (there'll be hundreds of you!) to volunteer to make tapes for latecomers, people away this week who missed it & folks simply unable to follow instructions. Please don't be upset if you fall in these catagories. I'm sure many will be there to help you in a few weeks. Thats the angels you are---Right? These tapes are a gift. NOT an obligation. Remember that & BE NICE when you contact us about it. I'm not going to deal with any more emails from aggravated people who have problems that are obviously due to not reading the instructions! (Although I welcome encouraging notes, which would be a nice change.) Please help preserve our sanity & just follow the instructions. We really want everyone to be happy. Mike is committed to helping you. I don't wanna need to have Mike committed because of that. I was trying to figure that out myself, without causing alot of extra work on my side, and it just hit me now. Starting tonight, every leaf request I receive I will reply to immediately. I'm NOT gonna type anything, just hit the "reply" button and send it right back to you as is. That will be your "receipt". Leaf requests that I have already received I will reply to tonight in the same manner (to get "caught up", in other words) Once I am caught up, I will post that fact to the list. Jewel is on the cover of _The Seattle Times_ weekly entertainment section, "Tempo," that cames with today's (Thursday, September 19th's that is) newspaper. There's a teaser on the top of the paper's very front page that says "JEWEL: Top concert talent leaves life of dead-end jobs" and a bit of a photo. The photo they use there and the entirety of on the front of the "Tempo" section is one I've seen before with her leaning up against a tree. (For those who want to identify it further, she's wearing a thin choker necklace, a white tank shirt and a dark, probably black, sweater.) The article is by a _Times_ writer and mentioned her Puss Puss Cafe appearances. He was talking to her by phone from Sydney. It says mostly the usual things but ends: Jewel's appeal is Jewel. She's easy and funny, with a backpack of stories. Her songs are melodic and accessible and she sings loops around them. She also knows how to embrace an audience, to play what it doesn't know it wants to hear. And she knows there is more than just this moment. "I think you have to layer your work," she explained, "Put in stuff for people to find down the line. If you don't, well, that shoots longevity in the foot." The article is in promotion of her appearance at the Puyallup Fair near Seattle on Sunday. So here it is again. Copyright =A9 1996 The Seattle Times Company Entertainment News : Sept. 19, 1996 Tempo: A fresh new talent, she's come from dead-end jobs to a world of opportunity by Tom Phalen Special to the Seattle Times It was just over a year ago that singer/songwriter Jewel performed on four consecutive no-cover Thursdays at The Puss Puss Cafe on Capitol Hill. It was part of a "residential tour," where a performer sets up residence in a hub city and plays in different neighboring communities, rotating about once a week. It's an inexpensive way for a record company to saturate a regional market with a particular artist. It works well with self-contained solo musicians. For Jewel, now 22, it seems to have worked very well, indeed. Her spiritually-oriented, folk-influenced single, "Who Will Save Your Soul," rose to No. 11 in Billboard (this week it's at No. 14) and her "Pieces of You" debut album has sold more than a million copies. She's become a top concert draw; she's now on tour in Australia. "I'm in Sydney," she said over the phone, her young-girl voice sounding stuffy from a cold. "It's a promo tour. `Pieces of You' just got released here. It's nice to get out of America once in a while; you get tired of touring Ohio. Nothing against Ohio!" Three years ago Jewel was sleeping in her van and playing in a coffee house in San Diego. She spent her childhood in Homer, Alaska, singing with her father in small-town saloons - her first taste of show business - and living on an 800-acre homestead without power or running water. She managed to spend her last two years of high school at Michigan's Interlochen Fine Arts Academy on a vocal scholarship. There she got her first taste of culture and embraced it, learning to play guitar and writing poetry. From dead-end to recording contract After graduation she moved to California to be near her mother, who now manages her. She surfed and worked dead-end jobs as a secretary and a waitress. Eventually she quit, finding playing in coffeehouses more appealing. So did record executives from Los Angeles who discovered her weekly sets. Jewel eventually signed with Atlantic and in February 1995 released "Pieces of You." It barely made a ripple, but the company stuck with her. They helped her with the residential circuit, keeping her playing coffeehouses and clubs. She toured as an opening act nationwide, sometimes solo, sometimes with a band. "I had a band when I opened for Neil Young," she said. "I toured with him for four weeks before coming here. Working with Neil was awesome. He's such a sweet man." But the work can also be grueling, and seemingly unending. "I'm doing 40 shows in 30 days on this tour," she said matter-of-factly. "I sing in Washington (at the Puyallup) the day I get back." But it wasn't road work alone that brought Jewel, now 22, to national attention. Part of her visibility has come from TV. She's done regional and national shows, including all the late-night fare, where she got substantial attention. She also made a video for "Who Will Save Your Soul," her first single, and it was picked up by VH1, which led to more radio play. It was one of the first of a rash of music clips to be filmed in a public bathroom. The last sacred place "Funny isn't it?" she said, chuckling. "I started a trend. But it isn't just a joke. When I was a little girl in Alaska, I used to go outdoors a lot. That's how I got to know God, find beauty and simplicity. I got to be with myself and have silence around me, which is important. You hear who you're going to become. You can concentrate in silence. "So now, because my days are so full with people and meetings, constantly, I go into the bathroom to be alone. It's just about the last place you can go to be with yourself, to cry or get away from the kids or smoke a cigarette, whatever. "It's the last sacred place," she added, laughing again. "And I love the ironies in the video. We shot it for nothing so I got to do most of it, decide on a lot of things. I don't know if anybody else sees them, but I do; I did them for me." Somehow in the midst of the mayhem in which she now lives, she's recorded 30 tracks for her next album. "It's time to pick now. It's a burden, but it's a burden I prefer." Jewel's appeal is Jewel. She's easy and funny, with a backpack of stories. Her songs are melodic and accessible and she sings loops around them. She also knows how to embrace an audience, to play what it doesn't know it wants to hear. And she knows there is more than just this moment. Everyday Angels, ---------------------------------------------------------------------- | This is an edited re-post of the original leaf sign-up for | | the JewelStock Tapes. Please ignore if you already have signed up | ---------------------------------------------------------------------- First of all, ALL AUSTRALIAN BRANCHES AND LEAVES!! Please ignore this post, your situation will be handled seperately after this portion of the tree closes. ---------- ELIGIBILITY FOR TAPES: To receive the JewelStock Tapes as a leaf, you must have been a member of either the Jewel, Jewel-Digest or Jewel-News mailing lists as of 12:01am EST Monday September 16, 1996. ---------- WHEN TO EMAIL ME: Right now! Sign-ups are still open until midnight Tuesday. At that time this tree will be closed for sign-ups permanently. As I said above, if you miss this window, you will very likely be able to get copies from one of the many EDAs who will have these tapes when this tree is completed. ---------- HOW TO EMAIL ME: When you EMAIL me, please use the following format in the _SUBJECT_ of the EMAIL, NOT the body, but the SUBJECT!!: all lowercase letters, no capital letters please. examples: leaf - lastname, firstname (country or US territory) leaf - clinton, bill leaf - van dyke, dick (canada) leaf - vega, antonio (puerto rico) You DO NOT have to fill in the country if its the USA (50 states only), US territories please fill in your territory name. All other countries fill in your country name. That's it. No JS, no JewelStock, just --> leaf - lastname, firstname (country) In the body of the EMAIL just tell me you'd like the JewelStock Tapes or whatever. ---------- ---------- ---------- ---------- ---------- Everyone involved in this project sincerely hope you enjoy your tapes, Your fellow Everday Angel, Mike From owner-jewel-news Tue Sep 24 13:38:51 1996 Return-Path: Received: by smoe.org (4.1/SMI-4.1-hack1) id AA15235; Tue, 24 Sep 96 13:38:51 EDT Received: from emout07.mail.aol.com (emout07.mx.aol.com) by smoe.org (4.1/SMI-4.1-hack1) id AA14494; Tue, 24 Sep 96 12:17:28 EDT Received: by emout07.mail.aol.com (8.6.12/8.6.12) id MAA07050; Tue, 24 Sep 1996 12:17:12 -0400 Date: Tue, 24 Sep 1996 12:17:12 -0400 From: ABershaw@aol.com Message-Id: <960924121712_292105230@emout07.mail.aol.com> To: jewel@smoe.org Cc: jewel-news@smoe.org Subject: Jewel News: MISC: Chronology thanks & info Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk X-To-Unsubscribe: Send mail to "jewel-news-request@smoe.org" X-To-Unsubscribe: with "unsubscribe" as the body. While at work today the rep. from Launch magazine came in to my store to drop of some info for their cd rom which we just started selling. He gave me a sneak preview sheet for vol. 9 which streets on Oct. 1st. Wow! On the cover is an awesome picture of Jewel. She is the featured artist for this issue. Here is a quote from the preview sheet: "All eyes are on Jewel who discusses her passion for surfing (and we don't mean the Net) and performs her top ten hit "WWSYS" EXCLUSIVELY for Launch." I wonder if it's a different version than the one on POY. It retails for $9.95. I will probably get at least 10 copies so if anybody doesn't have access to Launch let me know and maybe I could send a few out to whoever wants one. Also, I just received a few promo singles from Atlantic that have Jewel and Duncan Sheik on them. The Jewel song is "Race Car Driver." It was the first time I heard this song. It was very cool. They came with a booklet that was hand-written by Jewel(i think-it was hand-written, I just don't know if it was by her). It contained lots of her poems and background information about several of her songs. It was very interesting to see how some of her songs originated. Anyways, I'm sorry to ramble on for so long. I guess I was just excited to have something to post :-> -Joe From owner-jewel-news Fri Sep 27 15:34:48 1996 Return-Path: Received: by smoe.org (4.1/SMI-4.1-hack1) id AA20833; Fri, 27 Sep 96 15:34:48 EDT Date: Fri, 27 Sep 96 15:34:48 EDT Message-Id: <9609271934.AA20833@smoe.org> Received: from relay1.shore.net (root@relay1.shore.net [192.233.85.129]) by dns.eng.auburn.edu (8.7.6/8.6.4) with ESMTP id OAA22651 for ; Fri, 27 Sep 1996 14:09:35 -0500 (CDT) Received: from smoe.org (smoe.org [204.167.97.154]) by relay1.shore.net (8.7.5/8.7.3) with SMTP id PAA23959; Fri, 27 Sep 1996 15:08:32 -0400 (EDT) Received: from localhost by smoe.org (4.1/SMI-4.1-hack1) id AA20555; Fri, 27 Sep 96 15:08:43 EDT Received: by smoe.org (bulk_mailer v1.5); Fri, 27 Sep 1996 15:08:00 -0400 Received: by smoe.org (4.1/SMI-4.1-hack1) id AA20499; Fri, 27 Sep 96 15:07:57 EDT Received: from business.socal.com (ecn.com) by smoe.org (4.1/SMI-4.1-hack1) id AA20493; Fri, 27 Sep 96 15:07:52 EDT X-Routed: Fri, 27 Sep 1996 12:26:10 -0800 Received: from ;Sinjin [198.211.192.21] by business.socal.com with smtp id $T106969 ; Fri, 27 Sep 1996 12:25:42 -0800 From: Sinjin@ecn.com X-Mailer: Mozilla 2.0 (Win95; I) Mime-Version: 1.0 To: Jewel@smoe.org Subject: Jewel News: TV/RADIO APPEARANCE Jewel on Access Hollywood Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-To-Unsubscribe: Send mail to "jewel-request@smoe.org" X-To-Unsubscribe: with "unsubscribe" as the body. Here's the transcript of Jewel's segment on "Access Hollywood" aired Thursday night on NBC. ***BEGINNING MISSING*** REPORTER: "She has a hit single and a hit debut album, _Pieces of You_, which has sold more than a million coppies." JEWEL: "That's something that's still hard to comprehend, that they like it. Hehehe, it's still hard to believe...it really is." REPORTER: "If Jewel seems surprised by her success, maybe it's because just four years ago this sweet sounding folk singer was living in her van while playing coffee houses in San Diego." JEWEL: "I had one favorite spot I parked every night, it was next to a little tree with blooming flowers. So I could pull right up next to it and open my window and there'd be flowers in my window, and nobody could see in so I felt like I pretended I was in Alaska or something." REPORTER: "This rags to riches story has an unusual beginning, on this 800 acre farm in Alaska where Jewel grew up with no running water or electricity and where she learned to yodel. Life is certainly different now, these days she's posing for pictures for _Sassy_ magazine and shooting a music video for her new single "You Were Meant for Me". No doubt, Jewel has come a long way. And with critics calling her the next Joanie Mitchel, there's no turning back." JEWEL: "I have a new car, I don't worry about eating, I don't worry about getting sick and being able to afford a doctor. Um, all those things...mainly, the biggest thing to me is I do feel I like I have a purpose. And I think everybody wants that and I feel I'm so glad to have it." ***END TRANSCRIPT*** They showed clips from both Jewel's videos (not the original WYMFM, though) as well as the picture of Jewel in the blue van. They also showed the filming of the new "YWMFM" video as well as Jewel in concert and...JEWEL'S OLD HOUSE IN HOMER, ALASKA!! [Moderator's note: available on VHS in addition to CD] RHINO DOES OZ WITH JEWEL "Who Will Save Your Soul" has made Jewel famous. But earlier this year she was just another Dorothy wannabe. Jewel sang the Dorothy role in a performance of "The Wizard of Oz, in Concert," which was taped at Lincoln Center ans was shown on cable. That concert is now available on CD as "The Wizard of Oz in Concert: Dreams Come True." Other performers are recent Spirit Festival guest Jackson Browne as the Scarecrow, Rodger Daltrey as the Tin Man, Nathan Lane as the Cowardly Lion. I have approx. 160 copies of last month's "Request" magazine. The entire cover is a photo of Jewel, with a 4 page article with 3 photo's of Jewel included. It's a well written article, and a "must have" for any true Jewel collector. This magazine has a cover price of $2.95, but i got them at a store that was giving them away. I sent some to people on another list, and found that i can send one almost anywhere in the U.S. for approx. $3.00. If you are interested, send me an e-mail, and we'll work something out. I'm not trying to make any money off these, just trying to give them away to true Jewel lovers. I'm very interested in obtaining any concert tapes, bootlegs, promo's, etc... of Jewel, so include that in your e-mail. "I was made for what i do. Some horses are workhorses, and some are racehorses.
