Apperently Jewel was on hand as a judge for the competition. --------------- Jon Bream, Star Tribune Last update: September 13, 2006 11:27 AM Simon and Co. like a little of what they hear The "American Idol" judges, who were in the Twin Cities on Tuesday, found Minnesotans a little loony. Paula Abdul closed her eyes in disbelief. Simon Cowell winced and, of course, whined. They were talking about the contestants who were auditioning for "American Idol" on Tuesday at the Minneapolis Convention Center. Their word -- "weird." There were "odd" song choices such as "If I Were the King of the Forest," with the singer behaving like a lion. Another person acted like Miss Piggy. Cowell said there were too many theatrical songs. What's up with that, Minnesota? "Too many lakes," joked judge Randy Jackson. Of the 15 or 16 contestants the "Idol" judges saw before a mid-afternoon news conference, five or six will make it to Hollywood, Cowell said. The judges -- including guest assessor Jewel -- will be evaluating an additional 50 contestants Wednesday. About half of the competitors were from Minnesota. "American Idol" cameras were filming the hush-hush auditions. Newspaper reporters were told not to write about what they saw transpiring in the hallways before being ushered into the actual spot where the tryouts were taking place. Fox-owned KMSP, Channel 9, was the only local TV station permitted because the network broadcasts "Idol." About 10,000 people auditioned for "Idol" producers Friday at Target Center, with a few hundred making it to Saturday's second round in front of the show's executive producers at the convention center. This is the third and final round of auditions in Minneapolis, one of seven tryout cities. "Idol" host Ryan Seacrest was in the house for rounds one and three. Cowell predicted that two teen girls he'd seen Tuesday had a reasonable shot at making it to the final 12 on the sixth season of America's No. 1 TV show. Would Abdul, who recorded part of her debut CD, "Forever Your Girl," in Minneapolis in 1988, have made it on "American Idol"? Cowell was startlingly silent, then tried to joke about how long ago it was. Jackson blurted: "She'd definitely go through. She'd be forever our girl."
