A more thorough review will come tomorrow. Let me start out by saying thank you to all the EDAs who sent birthday wishes. They were all compiled into a 30 page birthday card with a beautiful Jewel-esque watercolor cover created by our talented EDA friend Lara. We had the finished product spiral bound at Kinkos with a clear cover and vinyl back. Long story short (for tonight), Jewel has got the card...for sure. I'll relay all the details about the show tomorrow, but for tonight, let's just say we had a very good time and were not disappointed at all. The music was great, and she looked beautiful. They still have a few technical things to work out but, that will get ironed out over the next few shows. According to one of her head production people, she's only had 4 days of rehearsal with this band. She did 30 cities of press in 15 days. More about all that tomorrow. Here's the setlist: The first three songs were without her band. 1) 1000 Miles Away 2) Stephenville 3) Life Uncommon (with a story about the recent death of the son of a friend of theirs) Then came the band. 4) Foolish Games 5) YWMFM 6) Again & Again (A&A?) 7) Hands 8) Good Day 9) Satellite 10) Down So Long 11) Love Me Just Leave Me Alone 12) Break Me 13) Intuition Then one of her guitarists announced it was her birthday and the audience sang Happy Birthday. They brought out a cake but she really didn't do anything with it. It was sort of off to the side and they seemed to have a hard time keeping the candles lit. By the time they got it out she had already started into her last song. 14) Who Will Save Your Soul Then they changed out the equipment and got ready for Rob Thomas. That's the Reader's Digest version of the concert. A full review and all about her card tomorrow. And forget American Idol. That might be the best way to describe Wednesday night's double bill of Jewel and Rob Thomas at the Mizner Park Amphitheatre. On an evening when most of the world was waiting to find out whether the "Soul Patrol" would rule, here came two rock-pop artists from a not-so-distant musical era. They're not exactly American idols anymore, but they still had enough appeal to draw a crowd of more than 2,000. In many ways, Jewel and Thomas represent that middle-of-the-road option from a decade dominated by angry alt-rockers, brazen hip-hoppers and pretty boy (and girl) pop stars. That is, their music has just the least bit of an edge, melodically or lyric-wise, to appeal to thinking adults, but it's not so jarring that it forces them to lower the volume. On the plus side, it's harmless. On the negative, ditto. Jewel has evolved somewhat from her guitar-strumming folkish '90s persona. As she generously offered up some of her more recent material in a modestly engaging hourlong performance, there were moments when she almost approximated the angry vibe of, say, Melissa Etheridge. But there were also moments when it was clear she was trying a little too hard to be hip. Take Intuition, a song with a kind of Euro-chic world-music flavor: I'd rather she read some of her awful poetry in its place. And what about her older fare? It still has a certain innocent, pseudo-literary charm, especially when Jewel sings it in her most girlish voice. And I like how she added a bass-heavy groove to Who Will Save Your Soul?, arguably still her best song. Thomas hasn't seemed to make quite the same efforts, good or bad, as Jewel in going beyond his comfort zone. His songs have stuck to the same semi-tortured-soul modus operandi since his days with Matchbox 20. Call it a portrait of the artist as a whining man. And yet Thomas is much more of a star than he was a decade ago. Credit his ever more solid, soulful and flexible voice he can punch out a lyric if he needs to, but he can also serenade his way into his fans' hearts. And he's a genuine presence on stage, making connections even when his music doesn't. A case in point: His slow-burn version of his now-classic 3 AM. You could say he was an idol at work. As for me, I'd still rather cast my vote for a more genuine soul man. Like Taylor Hicks. Jewel is doing a rotating setlist each night. She opened with "Foolish Games" last night in Orlando. I'm shocked! We've heard it from her before that she would switch it up each night and she actually is!!! And she sang Standing Still unlike on opening night! Read the artical for details on the stage. //ORLANDO REVIEW// Unlikely duo Jewel and Rob Thomas put on great shows Aline Mendelsohn | Sentinel Staff Writer Posted May 26, 2006 On Thursday night, one ticket bought admission to two very different concerts. In the first show, candles flickered onstage. In the second show, underwear was apparently thrown onstage. Jewel and Rob Thomas occupy different parts of the pop spectrum, but they both delivered entertaining performances at TD Waterhouse. Jewel, promoting her new album Goodbye Alice in Wonderland, surprisingly opened with "Foolish Games," a song from her first disc. Against a forest backdrop that changed colors throughout the show, Jewel interspersed her set with her older hits. She performed with her band for songs such as "Standing Still" and on her own for such numbers as "You Were Meant for Me." In a charming surprise, she yodeled a cappella. "Who Will Save Your Soul," Jewel's closer, was buoyed by riffs and a saxophone solo. The singer told the audience she wrote the song when she was 16. "I can't believe I still get to make music," she said. While Jewel was mellow, Thomas was explosive, bursting on the scene for opener "This is How a Heart Breaks." He prowled onstage, clutching the microphone stand and twirling it around. A dazzling backdrop of panel screens changed colors and graphics and resembled a trendy South Beach club. The lighting and stage design enlivened the performance, as did the trio of backup singers and the band. Standouts included two guitarists that displayed their rapport in numerous riffs. During the show, which clocked in at nearly two hours, Thomas reflected on concerts he once attended at the Waterhouse. "It's nice to be back," he told the audience. Each artist expressed respect for the other's work, but perhaps a duet would have given the double-billing some unity. No encore. Apparently they were rushing her off stage because train had to come on...so I was able to be front row for this concert because it was general admission. I waited outside the gates for 2 hours. When we got to the concert I was freaking out because I heard her doing her sound check...my friend thought I was crazy. I was rushing to the venue (we had to park a LONG ways from the theater). I heard her singing Long Slow Slide. My jeweldar was going off. :) when we finally got down there she was finished but her band was still on the stage. Then I got to see Toby Lightman's sound check. It was good entertainment for our wait outside the gates :) Before ENSS she forgot her words...I kept shouting them out, but alas she did not hear me :( So she invited someone up stage to sing with her...I was soo upset because the girl like 3 people down from me got to go onstage! Then she forgot the words! (I prob would to if I was in front of that many people) I think I was green with jealousy....I turned to my friend and apparently I made the most pitiful face :( So this girl got to sing with Jewel...and Jewel left the front mic to sing with her lead guitarist...so the girl was at the front mic by herself...THEN to add to my pain she got to stay backstage the WHOLE rest of the concert. Then when we were leaving I saw her and Jewel talking backstage....I was so sad...but that's ok the concert was amazing. Atlanta Concert: Jewel did not sing Again and Again or Goodbye Alice in wonderland. Here is the full set list: foolish games long slow slide deep water hands (good day story) good day (story about going to LA for the first time) satellite down so long everybody needs someone sometime love me just leave me alone break me solo set: (story about 1000 miles away) 1000 miles away Morning Song Stevenville, TX (story about cold song) cold song you were meant for me Band: Where you are standing still intuition (story about WWSYS) who will save your soul encore: somewhere over the rainbow chime bells When the lights dimmed the keyboard player came out and played the intro about four times before Jewel walked out. You could'nt see her and then she started singing foolish games and a purple spotlight came on. After a while a few of the band members started to walk on and added into the song. Then at the end the rest of the band was on stage. At times it sounded like they had her background vocals in the keyboard and they were playing them in the choruses. Long Slow Slide was AMAZING...I loved it. Also Deep Water with the band....I was in love. I've never heard it live with the band before and that is one of my favorite songs. Somewhere Over the rainbow left me speechless...It was sooo quite for Chastain Park! At the last beat of WWSYS a huge banner fell down and it had a picture of Alice in Wonderland...it kind of looked like it was based on Jewel. That just toped off the night. With the way the lights were and the very fairytale like forest background...it really felt like a production. The background looked like something strait out of Sleeping Beauty. They had really good merch BUT extremely expensive...more so than usual...the only fitted girl shirt they had was $40!! come on I'm a broke college student! They also had a gorgeous GAIW bag with a owl on it. It was only $10 but they sold out by the time I got up to the line :( So I got Toby Lightman's cd :) which is amazing!! I thought the concert was great...defiantly one of the best Jewel concerts I've been to. I had seats in ORCH L...which aren't that great...at chastain park it is really like being 20 or 30 rows back...me and my friend realized that the left terr ORCH B no one was sitting there...so we high tailed it down there to see jewel. Then it was like being in the 9 or 10 row!! I thought she did really well. Chastain has a curfew of 11. Last time she was there in August 2004 she went like 5 or 10 mins over and I think she got fined. So I guess this time they just shut off her sound. She had like 5 seconds left on Chime Bells. I think it kind of stunned her. She just stood there shrugged and waved then left. You Were Meant for Me Standing Still<----band returns Intuition Who Will Save Your Soul I got lots of great pictures. I tried recording the concert, which didn't prove too successful. I chose to use ipodlinux and a microphone. The microphone picked up WAY too much bass (so it clips any time the main drum is hit) and I also recorded in 8khz (not good quality) accidentally. Not good for much...let me know if anyone else got a good recording, though. Everyone around me was there to see Rob Thomas. He has a huge fan following, a few of the people were roadies. Some ladies offered me tickets to one of his upcoming shows in exchange to send them some pictures of the concert, but I told them to give the tix to someone who would appreciate them more and I'd send them the pics anyway. Lastly, for those concerned about taking camera, etc... don't be (or at least risk it--the worst that'll happen is they'll tell you to turn around and put it back in your car). When going in, I was worried (i even had my camera bag, not concealed). They were checking all bags and one security lady was busy the other wasn't paying attention so I slipped by, but he grabbed me and asked to look in my bag. Game over I thought. I told him it was a camera bag and he was like "I don't care, I just have to see inside it" so I showed him the camera and battery charger and he said ok, go in. Sweet. QUOTE("MrBB on Unedited Message Board") Hi all, Long time, no see. How are you these days? I'm doing well. Still running my archive management business, keeping busy and working with a bunch of fascinating people; Jewel among them. It was nice to see a few you last night at her Mohegan Sun gig. As some of you old-timers know, I'm often involved in the production process when live recordings of Jewel are involved. Over 150 live recordings have been featured on Jewel's websites over the years and a bunch more have been released on singles, albums, DVDs, etc. A few months ago, I was invited to produce a special CD EP featuring a few of the best live tracks that we've posted on Jeweljk.com and Unedited. Like "The Best Of Jewel:Unedited" DVD that was sent exclusively to 2005 Unedited members as a welcome gift, this new EP will be sent to 2006 Unedited members exclusively. Appropriately enough, the title is "The Best Of Jewel:Unedited 2006 EP" and it includes three unreleased live tracks, including one that has never been featured anywhere and is totally exclusive to this EP. The first track is a stripped down solo acoustic version of "The New Wild West," one of the more instrumentally adventurous tracks from Jewel's "This Way" album. We previously featured this during the early days of Unedited, but never in it's entirety. This is the complete performance, digitally transfered from the mixing desk DAT master. It's a particularly captivating version with a humorous twist in the lyric that is more appropriate now than it was when she sang it! (I'll leave it at that. See if you can spot this.) This was recorded at The Orpheum Theater in St. Louis, summer of 2005. Next up, we journey back to a song that Jewel has never officially released. We posted this on Jeweljk.com years ago and I think it still stands as the most popular audio ever featured. It unquestionably generated the greatest quantity of positive feedback that I've encountered over an audio clip. It's a highly charged electric performance of "Down," featuring the Spirit Tour band. This was the tour when Jewel began writing with an electric guitar and she pounds out some seriously infectious rhythm on this track. It remains one of the hardest rockin' tunes she's ever written. This song was always in a state of flux and never had a final set of lyrics but this particular version, recorded at Woodstock 99 before the biggest audience of her career, is the definitive version. I listened to every one of them and "Down" was never played tighter or with more passion from the band. I know many of you collectors already cherish this song from the various bootlegs made from the Woodstock 99 TV simulcast, but believe me, you have never heard it quite like this! Remixed here from the digital multitracks for the very first time. And finally, back even further to the Jewel song that first grabbed my full attention - "Amen." This performance, recorded at the Olympia Theatre in Dublin, Ireland during a 1997 solo tour of Europe, captures a deep moment and is a truly mesmerizing performance. Digitally mixed from the analog 4 track archive masters. (I keep an antiquated 4 track portastudio functioning here for just such occasions.) Beyond the few who attended this concert, this has never been heard before and is exclusive to this CD. I hope you enjoy having these tracks in such high quality, but there is another cool aspect of this little package -- The cover art featured on the EP sleeve was drawn by Jewel herself. Well, that's the scoop. I hear they'll begin sending the 2006 packages out this week. I'm unable to answer much email these days and haven't the time to stick around for questions, but I hope to pop in now and again. I'm off to log last night's show. I'll send a new audio to the webmasters soon. Something from the past few days. Stay tuned! Wednesday night, the pop veterans brought their A-game to Toyota Pavilion at Montage Mountain, where an estimated 4,500 fans turned out under crummy, rainy skies for the kickoff of the amphitheater's 2006 concert season. Jewel was up first, arriving on stage at 7:25 p.m. as the waterlogged crowd still made their way to their seats. "Hi y'all doin'?" the Alaska native said. "You guys are troopers for being out there." For the next hour, she gave thanks with a set filled with both old hits and new stuff from her most recent album, "Goodbye Alice in Wonderland." On "Foolish Games" and "You Were Meant For Me," she hit all the high notes. On the new tune "Good Day," she mixed playful lyrics with a beat that was equal parts twang and funk. She bantered playfully with the crowd, and even showed off her impressive yodeling skills. Mr. Thomas picked up nicely where Jewel left off. Taking over at 9, he and his tight seven-piece band immediately dove into the revved-up strains of "This Is How a Heart Breaks," a cut off his solo debut, "Something to Be." Though he's taking a break from his band, matchbox twenty, Mr. Thomas made sure to incorporate a few of their biggest hits into the set, including "If You're Gone," "3 a.m." and "Push." This time, though, they had different arrangements to them. However, there was one holdover Mr. Thomas' authoritative vocals, delivered with passion and clarity. He also threw in a couple of interesting covers, like Fleetwood Mac's "The Chain" and the Tom Petty-Stevie Nicks duet, "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around." Stepping into the Ms. Nicks role Jewel, back for a well-deserved encore. The season is off to a good start. Let's hope it continues. By ALAN K. STOUT astout@leader.net SCRANTON - Both Rob Thomas and Jewel have each recorded albums that have sold more than 12 million copies - Jewel with her 1995 CD, "Pieces Of You," and Thomas with Matchbox Twenty's 1996 CD, "Yourself Or Someone Like You." And, during the past decade, both artists have continued to rack up the album sales and the Grammy nominations. On Wednesday, both songwriters began the summer concert season at the Toyota Pavilion at Montage Mountain, offering the crowd of 4,500 an engaging and impressive night of music. Jewel opened her set with "Foolish Games," and followed with the new, "Long Slow Slide," and a rocked-up rendition of her 1998 smash hit "Hands." Backed by a sturdy five-piece band, Jewel did a laudable job of combining her folk-flavored sound with a heavier backbeat. The songs retained their texture while also coming with a bit more kick. Jewel mixed her set with crafty tunes from her new CD, "Goodbye Alice in Wonderland," and her big '90s hits. Though both were very well-received, it was numbers such as "You Were Meant For Me," and "Who Will Save Your Soul," that connected most. But whether the music was old or new, she delivered with precision and with plenty of soul, and her voice remains among the best in the world of pop music. And yes, she yodeled. Thomas, touring in support of his first solo album, "Something To Be," started his set with the new "This Is How A Heart Breaks," and "Fallin' To Pieces." Revealing early in the show that he wasn't about to back off from his Matchbox Twenty hits, he then offered "If You're Gone." Thomas made history last year when his latest CD entered the billboard charts at No. 1, marking the first time that a male artist from a rock or pop group debuted at No. 1 with their first solo album. Judging by the quality of the songs, those record-buyers were not likely disappointed. "When A Heartache Ends," "Lonely No More" and "Ever the Same" sat well next to MB-20 favorites such as "3 a.m." Thomas' six-piece outfit tweaked the arrangements of some of the more familiar numbers, adding a touch of soul to the modern rock staples. Jewel also joined Thomas for a number - a thumpy cover of the Tom Petty/Stevie Nicks classic, "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around." Thomas later had fun with a funky cover of the Talking Heads' "Burning Down The House." Encores included an acoustic rendition of "Push," a cover of Fleetwood Mac's "The Chain," and a slower and more deliberate version of the Grammy-winning "Smooth." Though it was a chilly night on the mountain and a misty vapor often came from Thomas' mouth when he sang, the show did raise the curtain on the summer concert season with class and style. Two gifted songwriters. Two gifted vocalists. One fine show. By Mike Errico Blender.com, June 2006 THE OVERALL MOOD OF YOUR NEW RECORD, GOODBYE ALICE IN WONDERLAND, SEEMS TO LIVE IN LYRICS LIKE "THERE'S A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DREAMING AND PRETENDING.": Yes. A lot of the record deals with having the willingness to find the truth instead of wanting to escape in a constant fairy tale. Children are told so many fairy tales, and then life really works out differently and I think it causes a lot of us to become cynical or bitter because life never quite adds up to this continuously satisfied, happy world. We're constantly trying to escape our circumstance to get to this utopia that I don't think really exists. BUT, LIKE ALICE, ONE'S POINT OF VIEW CHANGES. : Yeah. What fascinates me about Alice in Wonderland is that it really was a self-imposed trip that she took. You know, she drank the elixir, she chose to live in that world and there's a lot of ways in my own life that I've chosen to escape and not really deal with what was real. ARE YOU, AS A MORE MATURE ARTIST AND PERSON, ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THOSE MYTHS NOW?: You know, it's funny. It's like a cruel joke. I feel like each of us is destined to live the same life over and over within one lifetime. UGH, TELL ME ABOUT IT.: I feel like the things I'm writing about now are the same things I was writing about in Pieces of You. Am I loved? What is love, you know? Each of our lives is shockingly similar. Only the details change, you know? I mean, I lived in a car and now I'm on a tour bus. The details change, but they're really details. IT'S JUST MORE WHEELS, ISN'T IT? Yeah. And hey, there's plumbing in here, so I'm way ahead. SPEAKING OF DETAILS, DO YOU HAVE ANY BELT-BUCKLE BLING, NOW THAT YOU'RE WITH RODEO CHAMP TY MURRAY? Yes, I do. I have one of Ty's world championship all-around buckles. I also have one of his world championship bull-riding buckles. YOU ALSO HAVE A MECHANICAL BULL ON THE RANCH [IN STEVENSVILLE, TEXAS]. Oh, yeah. DOES TY GET ON AND JUST GET BORED? You know, not really. We only do it when, you know, we've all had too many Keystone Lights and everybody heads to the barn, you know. INTERESTING. SO YOU BASICALLY HANDICAP HIM WITH BEER. It doesn't handicap him. He's really good. But it's just like when we have guests over, you know, and we have a barbecue, everybody will head up there and he'll run the machine and everybody else will get on it. THAT'S THE MOST DANGEROUS BARBECUE I'VE EVER HEARD OF. It's not dangerous. There's a pad for you to land on. It's soft. UH, OK. It's not alive. It isn't gonna charge you and stab you with the horns. So all you gotta do is fall on a pillow. BUT DURING THE RECORDING, IT ALMOST THREATENED YOUR PRODUCER ROB CAVALLO'S LIFE. No, he did good. It was just cute, you know. Him and my engineer both got on the bucking machine and they were like, "My hand's killing me!" RECORD PRODUCERS ARE NOT KNOWN FOR THEIR ATHLETICISM, GENERALLY. Yeah. The only exercise most musicians got was running away from jocks. I SUPPOSE IT'D BE TOUGH FOR A GUY TO TELL HIS FRIENDS HE GOT WOUNDED ON JEWEL'S RANCH. He was 74. During nearly 30 years with Atlantic, Mardin's sleek, jazz-savvy producing and arranging skills were applied to hit recordings by, among others, the Bee Gees, the Average White Band, Bette Midler, Willie Nelson, Aretha Franklin, Dusty Springfield, Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway. Over the years, he collected 11 Grammy Awards, including album of the year, record of the year and producer of the year honors for his work on Jones' debut, "Come Away With Me," in 2003. Born March 15, 1932, in Istanbul, Turkey, Mardin graduated from Istanbul University and studied at the London School of Economics. A devoted jazz fan, he met trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie and arranger Quincy Jones in 1956, and two years later received the first Quincy Jones Scholarship from Boston's Berklee College of Music. After graduating from Berklee in 1961 and teaching there, Mardin joined Atlantic in 1963 as an assistant to label executive Nesuhi Ertegun, brother of co-founder Ahmet Ertegun and a fellow Turk and jazz devotee. Mardin rose through the company, eventually becoming senior vice president. Mardin brought his jazz-honed skills to such hit singles as "Pick Up the Pieces" by the Average White Band, "Groovin"' by the Young Rascals, "Against All Odds" by Phil Collins and "Jive Talkin"' by the Bee Gees. He arranged or produced such key Aretha Franklin albums as "I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You," "Lady Soul," "Spirit in the Dark" and the live gospel session "Amazing Grace." But he could also shift gears, helming albums by such folk and roots talents as John Prine, Willie Nelson and Doug Sahm. Mardin also released two instrumental albums in his own name on Atlantic: "Glass Onion" (1970) and "Journey" (1975). Often working outside Atlantic's auspices, Mardin later produced such artists as Rod Stewart, George Benson, Barbra Streisand, Patti LaBelle and Diana Ross. Over the years, Mardin dabbled in theater and TV productions: He produced the music for Bette Midler's 1992 TV production of "Gypsy" and worked on Whitney Houston's 1997 remake of Rodgers & Hammerstein's "Cinderella." He won a Grammy for his production of the cast album for "Smokey Joe's Cafe: The Songs of Leiber & Stoller," and received a nomination for the original cast album of "Rent." Mardin retired from Atlantic in May 2001. Later that year, he became co-vp/general manager at EMI's Manhattan Records. His first production there was Jones' bestselling debut; he also produced albums by singers Melissa Errico and Dianne Reeves. Mardin is survived by wife Latife, son Joe and daughter Julie. Sparkling sounds of Jewel, Toby Lightman give way to Rob Thomas' streamlined rock stylings June 26, 2006 By Kate Lohnes By Kate Lohnes Monitor Staff Writer klohnes@themonitor.com At Dodge Arena on Sunday night, you can bet screams came from Section 1, row F, seats 11 and 12. That's where Sandra Sisnero and Diana Rodriguez, from San Antonio and Pharr, respectively, sat waiting to see matchbox twenty's front man Rob Thomas on his solo tour. The sisters had been waiting for Thomas's first Rio Grande Valley appearance since they bought the tickets through Thomas' fan club a month ago. Equipped with frozen margaritas, black and pink T-shirts proclaiming "I love Rob Thomas" and a healthy dose of blushing, the pair were less than shy while admiring Thomas. "He's hot, he's hot and he's hot," Rodriguez said. "He sings great," Sisnero added. "Oh yeah, and, he's hot," Rodriguez said. "And he's married to a Latina." She laughed and crossed her fingers. "Maybe there's hope for us." While Thomas was the headlining act Sunday night, the evening's roster included singers Toby Lightman and Jewel. Fans trickled into the arena starting around 6 p.m., slowly filling seats and buying tee shirts for each act. Twenty-year-old Carlos Carcamo from McAllen said he considered purchasing a Jewel T shirt, but the $30 price tag was a little steep for him. That's no insult to Jewel Carcamo would have rather bought a backstage pass for a face-to-face chat. "I just want to meet her and ask her how the hell she comes up with these songs," he said. "She's a genius." Carcamo bought his ticket to see Jewel without a second thoughtthe University of Texas-Pan American student has been a fan since her album 0304 and has collected all her CDs. For his first concert ever, he said, he wouldn't want to spend the money on anyone else. "None of my friends know (I came)," Carcamo said. "I came here alone. It's a personal side of me." Jewel came on stage shortly after opening act Lightman at 7:25 p.m. Guitar in hand and wearing stiletto boots, she opened with her song "Satellite." "I'm so glad to be back home in Texas," the Stephensville, Texas, resident said to the whistling crowd. "Of course, this is officially the farthest south I've ever been." Jewel played a generous sampling of new and old material, including her newest single "Again and Again" and "Foolish Games" from her first album Pieces of You. Between songs, she conversed with the crowd, cracked jokes and took song requests, obliging several shouts for her single "You Were Meant for Me." Jewel ended her set with her first single, 1996's "Who Will Save Your Soul?" For Carcamo, it was the perfect closer. "The conclusion was great. She was fantastic," he said with a grin. "I sang along with every song, I didn't care if people heard." Thomas's fans felt the same about his performance. Taking the stage promptly at 9 p.m. with the title track from Something to Be, Thomas waved at fans and promised an evening stuffed with music. "We've got about two hours to cram in a lotta songs," Thomas said. "Thanks you guys for coming out. I hope you have a good time." Thomas's set list included singles from his solo album, like "Ever the Same," as well as the matchbox twenty songs "If You're Gone," "3 a.m." and an acoustic version of "Smooth," a song he co-wrote with Carlos Santana. Midway through the concert, Thomas played "Not Just a Woman" with a pick from McAllen resident Mario Cavazos, who sat in the front row. "This is very good," Cavazos said as he snapped digital pictures of Thomas playing. "He's awesome." Five rows behind Cavazos, Sisnero and Rodriguez were surely thinking the same thing. "Even if he just stood there, he couldn't disappoint us," Rodriguez said from her seat. "We love Rob Thomas. We can't deny it." Kate Lohnes covers features and entertainment for The Monitor.
