It's good to be back. So... What else is new, you ask? Jewel has been continuing her preproduction experimentation toward ideas for her next album and has continued churning out many new songs in recent weeks. Since we last updated you on her various collaboration experiments, she's had a few more adventures of note. Prior to the holidays, Jewel collaborated with renowned R&B singer, producer, and songwriter Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds on several new songs. She also spent some time working up new material with one of the UK's most talented and prolific writer/producers - Guy Chambers. Additional sessions also occurred with Lester Mendez, who Jewel really enjoyed working with before. It remains to be seen where all this experimentation will lead, but Jewel has been enjoying collaborating with such talented people and it has certainly expanded the context of her own songwriting ideas. There's so much new material and such a wide range of directions Jewel is currently playing with, that it's difficult to say what direction this new album will take, other than it is sure to surprise many of you. While many of these experiments are quite unlike anything Jewel has recorded in the past, they are all lyrically-driven songs with a focus on her remarkable voice. I'm sure you'd enjoy knowing more and here's an official "heads up" that more is coming, but not from me. Jewel would enjoy updating you herself and we'll be sending you her message in the next 24 hours. Watch for it! Happy New Year! I spent the New Year sipping coconut drinks and sitting in a hot tub. The house belonged to a friend and they were gracious enough to let Ty and me stay there. I ate way too much and slept a lot and caught up on movies. It was the first break I've had since I released my last CD. I have been writing songs on off-days while on tour, and now that I'm done touring I have been going at the new songs without any distractions. I'm very excited about the new CD. This is the first time I'm writing songs specifically for a record. Usually I just pick through my catalogue and write a few to fill in the holes. But this time I had a whole new vision for my CD. I got to thinking about the times we are living in, politically and socially. I thought back to the 2nd World War and how Big Band music reached its zenith. During a time of tremendous uncertainty and strain, Big Band music offered an escape. People packed into small rooms and lost themselves in the rhythm and swing of the music. The windows fogged from sweat and men pressed their partners up against them and they felt like within the walls of that dance hall everything was OK and that they were young and that their passion was enough to make the whole world seem right. I want the music on my next record to make everyone feel like that. I want this collection of songs to make everyone want to move and dance and let themselves be hypnotized, forgetting all their troubles and letting nothing but melody take their place. This record is more about rhythm and dance than my past ones. I'm writing most of the record with a really talented guy named Lester Mendes. He's great at programming. We write the music together and I write the lyrics and melodies as usual. I love writing with him. We write with the same ease and creative freedom as Steve Poltz and I did. I asked him to co-produce the record with me. We are doing it at my house. I have set up a whole studio in my old office and I'm excited to be at home instead of away from home even more. I think this is my best record. I have 10 or so songs written and we're still writing. This record may seem pretty different to you all; I'm not sure. I'm combining R&B and hip hop rhythms with dance rhythms with '80s synth sounds with organic sounds like my guitar and hand-clapping and whistling. All the while I hope to keep it all pretty lo-fi and raw sounding in the way we record it. It has been so much fun so far that it seems almost illegal. I am really happy with where I am creatively. I have a confidence and finally a grasp on craft so I worry less and just have fun with the whole process. I'll try to keep in touch as we record and tell you how it's going. I hope everyone is healthy and happy in the New Year. Lots O' Love, Jewel. --- You can help a friend subscribe by having them send a blank email to join-jewelink@list.jeweljk.com To view selected back issues of JeweLink, please visit the JeweLink Archive at the www.jeweljk.com calendar page. To: jewel@smoe.org Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hey, everyone! I'm excited to announce that the lovely and talented Randi Driscoll will be playing my living room in Jersey City on Sunday, January 26 at 3:00 pm. Since it's Superbowl Sunday, we're making the show early enough that you can go on to any parties you may be planning to attend OR you can stay at my place and watch the Superbowl with a bunch of people who are fun but not very much into sports! The show is a Project Warmth concert which means that the only "cost" of admission is the donation of a warm coat, blanket, or sweater. These donations will then be distributed to local homeless people who could use a little extra warmth in their lives! Randi Driscoll lives in Los Angeles and has gained national recognition for her song "What Matters", written for Matthew Shephard who was killed several years ago in a hate crime assault. "What Matters" has been featured in several documentaries and was given a special mention in Rolling Stone magazine, in an article featuring Elton John and Melissa Etheridge. The song has also appeared in several educational films and documentaries, including an NBC film on Matthew's life. All proceeds from the song have been generously donated to anti-hate crime charities. Randi's music is beautiful and she has an incredible heart and great sense of humor. I promise you'll have a great time! Visit www.randidriscoll.com for more info on Randi. RSVP to me at w1ggy2@aol.com for directions and further details. My house is easily accessible via car (10 minutes from the Holland Tunnel) and bus. You can also get here via train and ferry. Bring as many friends as you want! Just try and give me an approximate count of who will be coming. Hope to see you there! Although this was a "new" Jewel appearance, in terms of it being broadcast, Jewel's segment was actually taped last October 1st in NYC, during a photo shoot for "Self" Magazine. This explains the slightly dated nature of the interview conversation. In addition to playing a solo acoustic "Who Will Save Your Soul" during her interview with Isaac, Jewel sang the Cole Porter song "Too Darn Hot" during the photo shoot sequence. In a related question, quite a few have asked about Jewel's "Self" Magazine appearance in the January 2003 issue, which happened to be shot at that same October 1st photo shoot. Apparently, some were unable to find Jewel because there is an unrelated fold-out Jergens advertisement proceeding her and these pages seem to be obscuring it. If you locate the fold-out pages following page 28 and open those pages, you should find it. I think that covers it for today. Date: Fri, 31 Jan 2003 19:46:08 -0000 X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2800.1106 Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk This is from an article at rollingstone.com... http://www.rollingstone.com/news/newsarticle.asp?nid=17468 Jewel Gets Weird Singer-songwriting dabbling in new beats on upcoming album Even though Jewel only recently finished touring behind 2001's This Way, the singer has begun recording the follow-up, which she expects will be out in June. "I feel like records usually take too long," she says. "I wanted to do this right away." Jewel's sense of urgency comes from her interest in tackling timely subjects. Among the names checked in the new batch of songs: Pete Townshend, Roman Polanski, Jennifer Lopez and Charlie Sheen. "There's a lot of pop references," Jewel says. "Social commentary has always been a big part of my writing. And I know what I want to say to the world by summer. Beyond that I really can't say where politics is going to be, or culture." Though she says the new album is very "lyric-driven," she promises it will surprise a lot of her longtime fans musically. "This record's a really different record for me," Jewel says. "It's really a weird combination -- part dance, part hip-hop, part folk. It should be a really raw-sounding record. It sounds like me," she assures, "but you'll hear a lot of things in it." Jewel attributes the changes to her working with collaborators for the first time. "I'm writing with lots of people and having lots of fun," she says. "I'm not a very good guitar player, so by writing with other musicians, I can get things out that are in my head that I can't do with my hands." Her primary collaborator and co-producer is arranger/producer/keyboardist, Lester Mendez, who has worked with Shakira, Enrique Iglesias and Carole King. "He's very, very talented and you'll be hearing a lot about him," Jewel says. Jewel, who starred in the 1999 Ang Lee film Ride With the Devil, is also planning a return to the big screen. "I'm producing a film called Waves, and there's a part for me in it," she says. "And I don't think it's signed yet, but I think Goldie Hawn will be making her directorial debut . . . I don't know if I was supposed to say that."
