This week we are featuring a mix of images from our adventures in Connecticut, New York and Massachusetts. Stuart Mathis blew This Way Tour audiences away with his incredible guitar work, taking soaring leads and adding rich textures with slide or cool Old School effects. He went on to charm the intimate audiences of Jewel's solo acoustic shows, whether playing his own sweetly crafted songs or Led Zep riffs on a banjo. An artist of depth and soul, he recently took the time to tell us what it's like opening for Jewel and what's next for Stuart Mathis. Check out this exclusive new interview in the Tour Section of www.jeweljk.com. After that, hop on over to Soul City Cafe to hear some exclusive new live recordings from his SCC opener sets for Jewel last month. You'll find this (songs One and Two under "Audio") at: http://www.soulcitycafe.com/artbeat/artbeat.asp?action=detail&aid=28 We've also updated the setlist page completely. Every accurate setlist to the November tour is now online. To enjoy all this new content, visit Jewel's Tour section. You can access it by clicking the link (under Check This Out!) on the home page or by going directly to: http://www.jeweljk.com/low/tour.html We have some particularly cool multimedia updates planned for you later this week. Stick around! ******************************************** ***NOTES FROM MrBB Hi All, Dropping in to clarify Jewel's near-future plans and dispel a few rumors. This month, Jewel will continue writing new material and experimentally collaborating as preproduction for her next album. Contrary to several reports, she has not chosen anyone to produce or coproduce as of yet, but will make those decisions in coming weeks with album production beginning early next year. Several tentative release dates have also been mentioned in the press, but they are nothing more than speculation at this early stage. You can count on a new Jewel album in 2003, but it's too early to suggest a release date. We are also getting quite a bit of mail regarding January touring plans. Jewel does not plan to tour in January. She'll be working on her album, other than a few one-off events. The best way to keep up on accurate information is to stick with us. We'll certainly keep you up on the latest developments with plenty of time to spare. It's also a good idea to check the www.jeweljk.com calendar page often, as it will always have the latest scheduling info. Also, before I sign off, I'd like to ask you all to help us spread the word about the Soul City Cafe Music Quest contest. Give the Arts and Entertainment Editor at your local newspaper a call and tell them you have a PR piece about a contest with the winner opening for Jewel. They will probably be interested. Any help you can provide us in spreading the word would be greatly appreciated! Hey, and don't forget to share the contest with friends who are talented musicians. You wouldn't want them to miss out on a chance for great exposure now would you? (The link and info is noted below) And if you've yet to visit SCC, please do so! There's a great bunch of folks already there and we'd welcome more of you. Become an "Insider" and enjoy our message boards, helping with future plans as well as additional exclusive tour clips and more. We have a lot of great plans for 2003 and we invite you to be part of them. Hope to see you there and be back to you soon, MrBB ******************************************** Jewel performance information and TV broadcast scheduling updates available 24 hours a day at: http://jeweljk.com/low/calendar.html ******************************************** WANT TO OPEN FOR JEWEL? One segment features Lenedra Carroll discussing her role as Jewel's mother and manager, and her business philosophy. This will air in some areas this weekend, Saturday 12/7 and Sunday 12/8. In most areas, this segment will air the following weekend Saturday, 12/14 and 12/15. This is a syndicated show, so it is on different networks all over the country. Otherwise, keep checking the www.jeweljk.com calendar for updated information. ******************************************** ***JEWEL'S TOUR SECTION UPDATES To conclude our final week of activity at Jewel's Tour Section, it's time for another video clip. Since we're featuring some notable "show endings" as our focus this week, we continue in that vein. As anyone who caught Jewel with her band the past few years knows, "Who Will Save Your Soul" had become an improvisational vehicle for Jewel's voice as well as a lengthy jammed-out showcase for band members. It's come a long way from the short reggae-tinged acoustic ditty it began as. It's been interesting to hear Jewel reinvestigate the solo acoustic essence of this song as the usual show closer during the recent acoustic tour. Her voice continues to improve with age, and it's more clearly apparent in recent performances of this particular song than perhaps any other. This week's video clip takes you to the close of one of the most memorable nights of the tour in Lowell, Massachusetts on November 15th. You get a birds-eye view as she humorously discusses her initial reactions to hearing "Who Will Save Your Soul" on the radio for the first time in early 1995, followed by a particularly good version of it - much as it used to be. And if you haven't already, enjoy this week's audios from DC's DAR Constitution Hall when Jewel invited Jason Mraz to join her on another cool variation of "Who Will Save Your Soul," and the final song of her final 2002 tour show at the beautiful Civic Theater in Akron - "Angel Standing By." This week we are also featuring a mix of photos from our adventures in Connecticut, New York and the above mentioned show in Massachusetts, as well as an exclusive new interview with Soul City Cafe artist Stuart Mathis. It's the EveryDay Angels Foundation (aka EDAF) and I've had the pleasure of knowing these people for quite a few years now and have enjoyed attending several EDAF related events, which are always memorable. They've helped accomplish some very cool things over the years and their sense of camaraderie, adventurousness and humor are well worth investigating. We encourage you to visit SoulCityCafe.com where you can learn a lot more about this collaboration and get involved. In the meantime, I turn you over to the EDAF. MrBB Hello! The EveryDay Angels Foundation was started in 1997 by a group of music fans who were drawn to Jewel's music because of it's simplicity, honesty, and humanistic messages. During the past five years we have strived to regain an ever-diminishing sense of community by holding fun yet meaningful events which bring people together. Past events include numerous beach cleanups, foodbank volunteer days, blood drives, walkathons, and also plenty of concerts. To find out more about our upcoming and past events, including info on our newest partner, Heifer International, check out Soul City Cafe's article or stop by our website at www.edaf.org where you can also sign up for our free e-newsletter to keep informed of our activities and get ideas on how you can make life better for someone in your own community. Starting this holiday season and running for the next several months, the EveryDay Angels Foundation will be sponsoring a fund raising project for Heifer International to bring an "ark" of animals to needy families around the world. To help us raise this money, please visit ww.edaf.org/heifer.htm and follow the links! Since first climbing the music charts in 1995 with the release of "Pieces of You," now Jewel - who made her acting debut in Ang Lee's 1999 "Ride With the Devil" - has been an inspiration for other young female artists, like Vanessa Carlton (who, like Jewel, is a sensitive singer-songwriter) and R&B star Ashanti (who, like Jewel, has published a book of poetry). After moving to the lower 48 from her native Alaska, the blonde-haired beauty struggled for a time, living in a van and performing in small coffeehouses. Her first album - which spawned the hit singles "You Were Meant for Me," "Who Will Save Your Soul?" and "Foolish Games" - spent 114 weeks on the Billboard 200. But Jewel had no interest in joining Britney Spears, Shakira and Mary J. Blige on the cover of Rolling Stone's recent "Women in Rock" issue. "I would have looked silly," she told Steppin' Out magazine. "The cover just doesn't have the integrity to be called a 'Women in Rock' issue. When Chrissie Hynde looks at that cover, does she laugh? Probably!" Jewel - who has been compared to rock legend Joni Mitchell -prefers to spend her downtime horseback riding with her boyfriend, rodeo legend Ty Murray. She describes her most recent record, "This Way," as "eclectic - it's rock 'n' roll, lyric-driven, diverse." She is currently working on a new album for release in July, as well as a new collection of love poems. (Her two previous books, "A Night Without Armor" and "Chasing Down the Dawn," both sold well.) She also hopes to act again and has started her own movie production company. Q: Describe your personal style. A: I'm pretty whimsical. I'm a Gemini, so one day you'll see me in jeans and a T-shirt and the next day you'll see me in Roberto Cavalli leather pants and killer boots. Q: Favorite designers? A: I like Allen B. jeans a lot. And Jimmy Choo has some high-heeled cowgirl boots out right now that I adore. Q: What do you wear for a big night out? A: Last night I went out and I wore a wife beater, a plain blue skirt, high leather boots and a Roberto Cavalli bright blue leather jacket. Q: What do you wear when relaxing? A: At home, I wear Wranglers and cowgirl boots and button-up shirts and belts to go riding in. Or just really comfy pants and T-shirts. Q: How do you take care of yourself? A: I really like growing up, and I like getting older. I get along with my body better. I really don't have to try very hard. It's been pretty easy. Q: Secret weakness? A: Lingerie is a big weakness of mine. It's so expensive, but I love it and I'm always buying it. Q: Do you follow a special diet? A: Dairy products are bad for my throat. I don't eat a lot of red meat. And I hate chicken. I saw that special new diet for Americans, and it talks about all the cancers in chicken, and that grosses me out. Q: Favorite beauty products? A: I've been using fresh oils on my skin. Fresh vitamin E oils or oil complexes. Q: What do you love to see men wear? A: My boyfriend looks righteous in a pair of Wranglers. Q: What was your last splurge? A: I bought a pair of cowgirl boots with the American Flag up the side - they're really tacky and great.
