Here it is. Warning - it's LONG: Atlantic Confidential Interview with Jewel J= Jewel LR = Lisa Robinson LR: I'm Lisa Robinson for Atlantic Confidential and today we are off the record with Jewel. Hi. J: Hello. LR: So at the beginning of this record and this whole new phase of your musical life, you said that you didn't want to have to run for homecoming queen each year. Has it been different this time? J: It has been. Yeah. I love growing up. I love having four records under my belt. And I like knowing that my best work is ahead of me and I haven't done my best work yet and the burden of that is on the artist and the artists job is to keep creating innovativeb& and being authentic and it's a puzzle you have to keep figuring out for the rest of your life and you have luminaries that have come before you to keep you working hard. LR: You got very very famous very very fast with the first record. But you've also always known that you wanted to have a very long career and that you are somebody that makes music and is creative in many different ways. Was it hard to pull the reins on this? Cause a lot of people don't do that and then they really get burnt out and flip out and have breakdowns and whatnot. J: I happen to be one of those people thatb& I have a very short leash in terms of whether I'm happy or not it's hard for me to ignore it. I never got enough out of fame and popularity that if I wasn't having fun doing it at the same time it wasn't enough to keep me going. It was painfully obvious when I wasn't enjoying what I was doing anymore andb& unavoidable. It was impossible to ignore. Everybody around me knew it. I'm not a politician. I'm not good at faking it. So it wasn't really hard for me because I had enough money to do it. I wasn't in a position where I had to compromise and I wasn't in a position where I had to keep doing something when I didn't feel connected to it and didn't know why I was doing it. LR: Have you managed to maintain a tie on - when you say you had enough money to do - you also started out having no money. I wonder how fast do people forget those times. And how much can you hold onto that memory - compared to what it used to be, compared to what your life is now and how comfortable it might be, or obviously is. J: Everybody handles those times different. I've talked to a lot of people that have been in similar situations - everybody handles it different. I'm never that far away from it. And I never felt like it was because of something I did that made me suddenly a sought after famous person. It's sort of random and it's good not to take that too serious. It can be gone just as quick as it came and nobody will care. I don't know how to describe it. It's sort of an impartial thing and one of the things that drove me to do the charity work that I do. Because there's just nothing about me that makes me deserve to be rich more than anybody else. There's nothing about me that makes me deserve to be poorer than anybody else. So I think when you don't take it too seriously and you see what you can do with the money. And I'm an artist that happens to write better when I'm comfortable. Not every artist is like that. A lot of people need pain and struggle to write. I find enough pain and struggle built into myself [laughs]. So when I'm not worrying about bills I write better. LR: Right. Speaking of pain what happened with this accident. J: You mean how did I get hurt? LS: Well you fell off a horse. J: I got bucked off, yeah. I was riding a colt and I knew that he bucked and my boyfriend got on him first and he bucked with him, and then usually he'd go good after that. But he didn't. He bucked with me for a long time and I ended up landing on the dirt on my neck and I broke a collarbone and three ribs so it was pretty painful. LS: Had you ever been thrown from a horse before? J: Oh yeah. When you ride colts it's part of the gig. Most horses aren't great at bucking with you. Not every horse has talent for it. LS: What does that mean - bucking? J: You've seen a horse buck in a rodeo [makes bucking motion with her hands]. LS: Yeah. But you're supposed to stay on it when they do that? J: Usually you can. Usually a horse isn't too great at it. I'm a pretty good rider and you can ride through it. It's better to stay on so the horse doesn't think, "oh, if I do that they'll get off". It's better to stay on so the horse doesn't learn that habit. This horse was really really good at bucking. I've never been on a horse that bucked that hard. He just really had a talent for it and enjoyed it and bucked for an unusually long time. And finally got me off. LS: Were you unconscious? J: Oh, no, not at all. It was in front of a bunch of cowboys. It was at a branding; a lot of very famous cowboys there. Ty said, "are you ok" and I said, "yeah". I didn't really realise how hurt I was till I got up and started walking and talking to some friends, and he went and got the horse. Once I got up and started talking to somebody I got my wind back and realised I was pretty hurt. LS: So you had to cancel that tour? The first one? J: No. I cancelled one shows that was a couple of days after the accident, and then I went on the road about a week later. LS: How long did it take to heal? How do you feel now? J: My collarbone broke clean through. So it was two separate bones trying to mend and there's no way to stabilize it. There's no way to put a cast on a collarbone. And everytime you move or sing you can feel your bonesb& Just until it sets and mends enough where it's gonna stick in one spot it was pretty hard. Singing with three broken ribs was really, really hard. I think it was good for me. I was glad to keep working and travelling because it's better than sitting at home and feeling sorry for yourself. LR: How long were you at home to heal? J: I was at home for about seven days, ten days. LR: That's all? J: Yeah. LR: Forced vacation. J: Kinda yeah. It was just how much time I had till this tour started. LR: Right J: Then I went out on tour. And you can get pneumonia from having broken ribs cause you don't breathe deep cause it hurts. Singing wasb& it hurtb& but I was forced to breath deep but it kept my lungs in good shape. LR: One of the things that - did it make it more interesting for you to be on tour this year doing these Soul City CafC) things? How did that come about? Tell me about that. J: Soul City CafC) is just something I've thought of cause I've watched the industry get more corporate. And I've watched all of America get more corporate. It's harder and harder for a singer-songwriter to develop naturally. Artists have a natural period of development and it's a very organic process, and it's individual to every artist. You know it took Billy Joel however long in his career to write the Piano Man. And they go through different phases. Like if you watch a Neil Young and he'll go through different phases and the whole world goes "what the hell is he doing?".. but he knows what he's doing and it's developing and turning into something. And that's something you have to let an artist do. It's an organic thing and it isn't a corporate thing. It isn't something where you can say keep pumping them out. The industry right now isn't geared towards that - it isn't geared towards letting artists develop. You're under a tremendous amount of pressure to keep a certain consistent level and nothing in nature is like that, everything has a fall or a winter, or a dormant period. So I created soul city cafC) to give an environment where artists could develop without those kinds of pressures. Because there's a fanbase out there that is really hungry for music that isn't generic. And they like watching an artist develop. They like being part of watching an artist develop. There's a website, soulcitycafe.com, where you can check out artists that have their own records or their own little record labels or are just getting signed. People that are completely unknown but have a local following. So you can go on there and check them out and support themb& and see them live. And help these artists make a living and develop at their own pace. LR: Did you put this together or did this exist already and you sort of started to sponsor it? J: No, we put it together. LR: How? J: I have a company with about 20 employees. My mum and I started it and we've been running it. And eventually we'll start to get help with certain things. LR: This is in addition to the Higher Ground for Humanity thing. J: Yep. LR: This is a separate thing? J: Uh, the 20 employees multitask. They do soul city cafC) as well as higher ground as well as my career. LR: Do you want to run a record label? J: Uh, I haven't really an interest in running a record label yet. We want to start a management company. I'm interested in helping manage artists and giving them a career like I've had where you're protected creatively. Where you have management that's looking out for you as a creative person as well as marketing and all those types of things. LR: How do you have the time? J: I don't have to do very much. I just create a platform for it. LR: How do you find the artists or do they find you? J: There's so many artists it's not funny. I get given demos constantly. The Soul City website constantly gets artists. We always have people saying "hey there's this local artist, you should check them out." Radio stations are usually pretty aware of a local scene. It happens in a lot of ways. LR: So did you give people slots on the tour? J: Yeah. I had like a whole thing where the doors would open at five and I would go on at nine and between five and nine there'd be soul city cafC) artists... all of whom get to open for me. I'm doing a solo tour right now and the soul city cafC) artist opens for me. I've just had unknown people opening for me across the states. LR: It's interesting cause you're doing the solo acoustic tour and beck was doing the same thing the past few months. I wonder if that's just another thing you feel is important in terms of your own growth and evolving, and trying out songs. Doing things more intimate. J: I've always been solo. I started out my career solo. I love being in a rock and roll bandb& I love having a band. But I really think I'm probably better alone on stage. It's a different show. It's not a rock show. But playing solo is very difficult. You will find very few artists that can do it. It's a hard thing to pull off cause you don't have all the tricks. You don't have rhythm and tempo, you don't have groove, you don't have volume. You don't get to go from a rock song to a ballad. All those kinds of things to keep an audience interested over a two hour period. You have to do it all with you and a guitar, and it's a challenge and it's really hard to keep people engaged. Not many people can pull it off. But I like that it's a challenge and I like that it's hard and I like that when you fail it's really obvious. You're walking a more dangerous line. LR: When was the last time you failed at it? J: I dunno, you kinda fail all the time. It depends on what you callb& Like I forget words constantly, or I'll get into a song and I'll get bored by it and just stop in the middle of it and move on. I talk a lot during solo shows. My audiences really talk a lot to me, you know, some of them get cheeky and I'll get cheeky back. Sometimes I have to put people in their place. I get really sarcastic. Other times it's just talking or storytelling or people will ask me questions. It's a very strange kind of informal environment. Sort of a throwback kinda thing. LR: To when you were a kid, doing this. J: Mm-hm. LR: It also seems like it's operating without a net which could be fun. J: I love that yeah. LR: But if you get a rhythm goingb& yeah. Does it feel like it's an out of body experience, like you're just kind of going off on tangents and you have to pull yourself back in. Like I've seen you sometimes talk to an audience and it's just seems like you have all these different roles. You're like standup comedian, storyteller, singer, but there's a real intimate connection I think that is not replicated when there's a band there. J: Yeah I can't really do it with a band. It's a different rhythm. When you're alone you can pace a show differently. You can push it more in different areas. You're in control but you're really really out of control. It'sb& your out of your body.. and your also hyper aware.. but it's from up above. I love it. I loveb& if the whole world is wrong and I get to go onstage and connect with an audience for two house, at least I find God for two hours a day. LR: Acting? You commissioned b& you have a production company also now and you're doing another movie. Can you just tell me something about that. J: Yeah. I got to do Ride with the Devil with Ang Lee and following that up has been impossible pretty much. You know finding a great script that's well written that I respect and isn't "so you're gonna be a singer". Finding it with a great director that happens to be fitting into my schedule .. it's been really really hard. So I finally decided to buy a property and develop a production company and develop the film myself. The film is called Wave and we're just now looking at getting it made. LR: What's it about? J: God, I'm so bad at giving a pitch. LR: Not a pitch, just the story. J: It's an ensemble piece, and an independent film. It's about .. it starts with a young man getting his mother out of prison. She went to jail for protecting her son - his father was molesting him. And uh.. it's sort of a heavy film. But it's a great film. It's a good story and uh.. I'm proud of it. It's well written. LR: When are you doing this? J: I dunno. We're getting people attached to it and looking for a director and those types of things. LR: You were really good in Ride with the Devil, I thought. It's really hard .. I dunno for you, but any other musician I've ever spoken to when theyb& even the ones that are good at it like Sting and David Bowie are basically the only ones I can think of that.. J: I liked Cher. LR: Cher, yeah. J: And Streisand was prettyb&.. LR: Yeah Cher was good. Um, Moonstruck. Silkwood. She was good in some movies. But there was this thing of "oh the popstar's on the set" Was it like that with you? Like you had to prove yourself harder? J: Not with my director. My director didn't need me on that film for any reason. He had me there because he thought I was the right person for the job, even if I was scared to death. Um, it was probably that way for the other actors. I don't know if I was very aware of it because.. you know, you don't have an awareness of yourself that way. I did notice the gaffers wouldn't look at me. And I was like "why isn't anybody looking at me?" And I guess it's cause they had just worked on another movie with another singer, I won't mention names, and they weren't allowed to look at her. It took me a long time to get usedb& you know I'd go into the craft service once I'd found out about that andb& I'm very facetious. And you know and I thought just to break things up I'd be funny and I walked into craft service and was like "everybody out!" And everybody left. So they didn't get the joke. LR: They left or they laughed? J: They left!!! LR: I thought you said they laughed. J: No, they left! You know, like, they're like "she is a bitch." So I don't know how well I went over. I don't think my sense of humour was terribly appreciated. I was just trying to take the piss. But I don't know how well it went over. LR: But you seemed really very calm and confident in that movie. Sometimes when people are used to playing to the balcony in a live concert situation - there are some musicians in particular who really are dreadful in movies because they overdo it. J: I was directed really well. It comes down to Ang Lee. I was absolutely inexperienced, as inexperienced as you can be for film. He saw something in me and he knew how to get it out of me, and was very specific with me. Like, he did two weeks of training with me and he didn't teach meb& we didn't go over a single scene. He taught me Tai Chi. And I was like "when is this gonna help me with my acting?' But he didn't think I was very grounded. I didn't walk grounded, I walked up here [points to her upper body], and he thought that on camera he saw me up here [referes to upper body again] and he never saw me in my legs. And I didn't look still enough. I didn't look grounded enough. I had to do breathing exercises, and Tai Chi, and I had no idea why until I saw on film what it did. He also made meb& I was never allowed to lift my chin more than this (puts her chin way down quite closer to her chest).. and if you watch that movie my chin does not moveb& and he was on my ass about it. And I couldn't bring.. I always had to do everythingb& he's like "you know you're 20 feet big on a screen and he says you can't move your head, you can't move your eyes, don't move your hands, be very still." He trained me. He trained me to have that stillness. That was Ang. LR: That's smart though cause that's what works. That really does work. J: Ang is VERY VERY smart. I was so lucky to have a director like that because my performance was directly related to how well he directed me and how well I was able to follow it, you know.. but without the directionb& LR: Who's gonna direct Wave, do you know? J: I don't know yet. We haven't attached a director. I've been looking at all sorts of films, uh.. besides that. I hope to do another movie besides Wave. But getting it all together is hard. LR: And books? There's gonna be another poetry book? J: You know I've been writing my little tail off! I've really been writing a lot of poetry lately. I quit writing poetry for years, and suddenly on the solo tour where I don't have a band to hang out with and I'm just alone all day I've been writing. My voice has really really changed. It's sort of been shocking to me. Um, the voice in my poetry is very very different. It's very very direct and sort ofb& I wanted this book of poetry to be.. you can't read it and feel comfortable. I want it to make people uncomfortable. It's a book of love poems, and I know that sounds strange, but it's gonna be just love poems.. but they're all b& violent isn't the right word.. but they're active, there's action in every single poem. You can't .. it's not a reflective sort ofb& sit on a hilltop kind of poetry. It's a much more gritty, dirty kind of poetry. Um, it's sexual or it's possessive, or it's a very action oriented sort ofb& it's very very different from my other stuff. It's surprising. LR: Are you possessive? J: Um, what I'm doing with this book is I'm taking... Love is a rainbow, say. It's a spectrum of colour. What I'm doing with each poem is I'm just showing you one. And I'm excluding everything else. So, some poems are terribly passionate, some are very sexual, some are very possessive, some are very non-commital. You'll get the full spectrum in the whole book, reading everything together. But each poem is a very - it's like an arrow hitting you, it's a very specific thing. But who doesn't feel possessive at some point. If it's all you felt then we'd worry at some pointb& but in the poem that's all I'm gonna show you, just that possessiveness. LR: Do you think that in a way you did that with the music too on this last record? Because there are some songs that have a much more growly rougher voice than other songs. You know they're all those different sides to you. J: I think it's that way for everybody. I guess I amb&. Every person feels gritty and dirty some days. You know, whatever brings that out in you. And other days you just feel like curling up on a person's lap and laying yourself bare. There's just so many moods to a person and I'm definitely no differentb& and I've always been fascinated with writing fully each of those so that when you're hearing that song all you're feeling is that grittyness or that lust or whatever it happens to be. LR: Did you also find somebody to do the video of This Way? J: As part of Soul City CafC). LR: That's part of Soul City CafC) too? J: Yeah part of Soul City CafC) was finding an unknown director who'd never really done anything before and he did a great job. LR: Great job! J: Yeah! LR: I mean reallyb&! J: It's my favourite videob& it's one of my favourites. LR: Just $50 000 dollars or somethingb&. What a scam that whole thing is. I mean seriously when you think about it. J: Oh, it's a huge scam. LR: Because this was beautiful. And also a lot of theb& the three videos I've seen for this record there seems to me to be a lot of illusion stuff going on throughout it .. it's like.. things appear that weren't there before, or people turn into other people, or you're standing back and watching yourself. Is that something that you were conscious of, the three of them together.. or is it just coincidental. J: I wrote the treatments I thinkb& maybe I didn't write it for the first one, but I collaborated on it. I've really been into Physics .. I've been into unified theory. Reading about quarks and neurons and neutrinos and um.. space time continuums, and it's been showing up a lot in my work. It's showing up a lot in my poetry and visual mediums.. um.. because reality is being re-defined. And so I find that I'm playing with that a lot.. especially in visual mediums. LR: Well the one that this.. what's his name? Marcos? J: Marcos .. LR: Efron? J: Efron. LR: I thought it was beautiful. J: Yeah I like that video. I thought it was good. LR: Had he done anything before? J: He shot his own music videos. Nothingb& you know what I mean. But I could tell that he had an eye for it and a respect for it and a love for it. LR: So to bring this thing full circle, do you know what you're doing for the next year? J: I'm about to write in October .. I'm gonna start writing a new record. LR: A new record? J: Mm-Hm. I want to have two records out in the next two years. That's my goal. Then I'll be done with my record deal.. um. [laughs]. I'm branching outb& LR: Is there a rush? [laughs] J: [Makes weird noise I can't replicate in type] I'd like to be done by thirty.. you know. LR: DONE? J: With this deal. I'd like to be able to re-negotiate. And start over at thirty. I'm writingb& I'm just getting very experimental. I wanna be very innovative and push it with this record. I'm writing with a hip-hop crew, I'm writing with dance crews, I'm writing with tranceb& I'm writing punk rock.. I've been writing on my own a lot of punk rock music. I'm gonna see how I can combine them and make them myself and see what interests me. It's usually not until I get both feet in the middle of it that I see what things I'm gonna piece together and how I'm gonna do it. So October will just be a lot of experimenting. I'm gonna do another acoustic tour in November, and get a record out by July. LR: And then the movie, the book of poetry. J: Hopefully the movie. The book of poetry I don't think will come out till February after nextb& Valentine's Day. LR: So you don't feel like it's too muchb& you're ok now .. you feel in control of it.. it's not pulling at you. J: Yeah I feel really good. The pacing's been better this year. I've been able to stick to about 3 weeks of touring with ten days offb& The last couple of months have been non-stop. I think I've just done 15 shows in 15 nights.. a show every night. LR: How's that on your voice? J: I have a really tough voice. I don't sing easy - I do .. I have a really demanding show vocally but.. I have a really strong voice.. umb& so it's been fine. It's just hard on your body. You just get really tired. LR: Well thankyou very much. It's good to see you and catch up with you. I look forward to the punk rock stuff. J: [laughs] It's been fun. (11/6/02, 4 p.m. ET) -- Matchbox Twenty's Rob Thomas, Jewel, and hip-hop production duo the Neptunes (a.k.a. N.E.R.D.), are among the artists who will participate in a benefit for VH1's Save The Music Foundation at the New York City club The Bottom Line on November 20. The artists, along with R&B producer Jimmy Jam and others to be announced, will appear as part of Songwriters In The Round--Generations Volume 1. Each will perform two of their favorite own compositions as well as a song they wish they had written. They will also discuss songwriting methods with the evening's moderator, legendary Elton John collaborator Bernie Taupin. However, contrary to previous information, country legend Willie Nelson is not appearing at the event. Songwriters In The Round is part of the annual New York fundraiser for the Save The Music foundation, which aims to reestablish music education in public schools across the United States. Tickets are $750 per person. Matchbox Twenty's Thomas, for one, has thrown his support for the Save The Music in the past. In 2001 he appeared at a public school in Buffalo, New York with Senator Hillary Clinton to celebrate the successful restoration of music curriculum in that city's school district. -- Neal Weiss, Los Angeles ------------ Chris. http://www.jewelfan.co.uk : Jewel - Pieces Of UK http://pub70.ezboard.com/fmusicpromosdiscussionfrm14 : Official UK Jewel Forum From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Mon Nov 11 18:35:11 2002 Received: from smoe.org (ident-user@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by smoe.org (8.12.6/8.12.6) with ESMTP id gABNZBIu007566 for ; Mon, 11 Nov 2002 18:35:11 -0500 (EST) Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.12.6/8.12.6/Submit) id gABNZAJu007565 for jewel-news-outgoing; Mon, 11 Nov 2002 18:35:10 -0500 (EST) Message-Id: <200211112335.gABNZAJu007565@smoe.org> From: Dave0828@aol.com Date: Mon, 11 Nov 2002 15:53:33 EST Subject: Jewel-News: Her East Coast shows so far. To: jewel@smoe.org X-Mailer: AOL 7.0 for Windows US sub 10634 Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hey everyone - just thought that I'd post some of the highlights of the first three shows on the East Coast (Portland, Foxwoods, Buffalo). You can all obviously see the setlists at her site, they're being surprisingly quick getting those up so far this tour (as compared to the western dates on the tour). Portland, ME - Merrill Auditorium This is an absolutely stunning hall! If you ever have the opportunity to see a show there you really should. It's a beautiful place. It rivals or betters the Kennedy Center Concert Hall in Washington DC. One of the real highlights here was the addition of Standing Still to her setlist on this Acoustic tour. She hadn't done it on her other leg. She had a moment at the end of the song where she was genuinely surprised by the response that the crowd gave her - you could see that she was taken aback. I leaned over to the person next to me and said that was a first, right as Jewel herself said so (as it turns out - she did play it solo acoustic at a holiday show last winter in CT, you were right Stacey - But, it was the first on the tour). She also did Til We Run Out of Road, which only seems to sneak in every now and then. And, that was pretty cool. One small bummer was that in between Per la Gloria d'adorarvi and Chime Bells she allowed some girls to coerce her into Foolish Games. She had asked what everyone wanted - which a usually a time for people to call out for the unreleased and rarer stuff. She even said - I'm so tired of that song - but, the girls kept yelling for it - and finally she obliged - "always the pop star" was the quote I believe. It was good of course - but, I was hoping for something that doesn't get played quite as commonly. One other thing - the setlist on her site lists Little Sister. But, she only started to play it. Then she said that she didn't feel like that song that night and stopped it while still in the intro. Foxwoods - Mashantucket, CT A great moment from this show came right at the beginning. Now to set this up a bit, the previous night in Portland she said that she was in her favorite size small hall. And, it was good that she could see everyone individually - this way she could see anyone and discipline them personally if their cell phone rang. Well, just into the beginning of Does Anyone Believe in Love, she had to reach around her back for something. Then, she messed up the chords and verse and laughed at herself and said "how pathetic is this? my own cell phone rang!!!" It was even funnier if you had been there to hear her admonish the Portland crowd the night before. She had everyone there say hello to her friend Brett at the count of three - laughed some more and began over again. This was quite a moment. She played Everything Breaks and all of Little Sister. But, Foolish Games was left out - as I suppose it would have been the night before in favor of something else. But, she didn't even pick up a guitar for the encore this time. Tonight when she asked what everyone wanted to hear - someone (Stacey) yelled out for Freebird. Someone has to do this at almost every show. Usually you get the retort "I've got your free-bird right here, or something to that effect. But, tonight she actually gave the bird - which was quite funny. I need to agree with Stacey's post about the fanatic with the flowers. Now, you'll know me if you see me at any of the rest of the shows. I always bring her a bouquet (all but twice). And, providing security is accommodating enough, I set them at her feet and walk away. But, this particular night, security came and took mine to give to her back stage and said that they didn't want anyone approaching the stage that night (in fact - her acoustic tour, including the dates out west, has been much more restrictive in regards to approaching the stage than her band or previous tours). Whatever security asks of me I'm more than willing to accommodate - I just want to know that she receives them. But Stacey - I feel for you, having to wait with this guy for so long before I got there and then having to sit next to him for the whole show. Let's just say that this guy was far too excited. He was asking me over and over if I thought that she would take the flowers from me or if she would stay at her mic stand. He wanted to know over and over again if I thought that he could get her attention - and how many times she had actually taken them from my hand. Now the simple answer to that question was that she has actually taken them from me ONCE in all the times that I have given her flowers at her shows. After all, she's there to put on a show for a bunch of paying customers, not stop and exchange pleasantries with every Tom Dick and Harry there. But, man was this guy over zealous in his pursuit of her attentions. To the point where he would not allow security to take his flowers backstage to her. It was more about him as far as he was concerned. While I tried to impart to him that he was giving her a gift and that her attentions or 'gift in return' did not matter - he was dead set on this mission of his. I tried telling him in so many words that it was selfish to give a gift with only the consideration of a return gift as motivation. And, he should just be about giving this offering to her because she above any other artists deserves to be given flowers each night. But, it continued to be about him. He approached the stage late in the show and was stopped by security - and the guard motioned for him to set the flowers at the edge of the stage and walk away - but, that wasn't good enough - even though she would in fact get them. He waited until after the encore and he did get his little moment when she saw him waving the flowers and came and took them. After the lights went up though - he reacted like he had scored a touchdown in a football game or something. Overall I had to think that the whole ordeal was quite inappropriate. I was just glad that he would no longer ask me over and over what I thought she would do. Anyway - Stacey, I feel for you - I hope that he didn't help to dim your enjoyment of the show. Buffalo, NY - Kleinhan's Music Hall This place had a lot of empty seats - which I thought was pretty unusual. It was small. And, her ticket prices are lower than many other artists. But, the lack of a 100% full auditorium did not stop her from putting out her best show of the first three. There was some comic relief when she had people yelling for Sweet Home Alabama. She said that she didn't really know it and that she had only sung the words in a studio from a lyric sheet for the sake of the soundtrack. But, she tried to humor everybody, as she is usually one of the most accommodating artists around. And, she actually knew some of the guitar part and tried to get her way through the first verse. But, she didn't know it. She tried two or three times. But, she ended up laughing at herself and exclaiming "Man I Suck!!" like a beginner trying to play something for their friends for the first time. It was really funny. But, the best part of the show came when she played Violet Eyes. Then she played Foolish games (I'm not as opposed to Foolish Games as it may sound earlier in this post). Now, she has played Violet Eyes at multiple shows that I've been at. But, this time there seemed to be so much more emotion behind it. I thought for certain that she would have tears streaming down her face as I looked up. It was absolutely moving, if not difficult to hear. There were multiple people that I spotted who had to dry their eyes. It was incredible to hear how much emotion was behind those lyrics at this particular show. Now to follow this up she did Foolish Games. This was completely unfair!! She pushed multiple people over the top with this. Many people who were able to hold back the tear at the corner of their eye had to let it go. This was incredible. She left everything of herself on that stage that night. Not that there isn't a lot of emotion behind all of her performances. But, this was one of those times when it is so stirring that if you're not moved by it you must be dead, check your pulse man... This not only rivaled but surpassed the tear-jerking effect of her 9/11 show this year where she performed Hands and followed it with Violet Eyes. This was such a great and genuinely moving moment that it's one of the highlights of ANY show that I have EVER been to - Jewel or otherwise. But, it also took so much out of me that I could stand to go a few more shows before she affects me like that again. The audiences have been very responsive to our Soul City Cafe opener Jason Mraz and Jewel has been captivating East Coast audiences, who haven't seen her perform full length solo acoustic concerts in quite some time. I've noticed that recent audiences seem considerably more respectful and attentive. Especially when performing solo, this often brings out the best in Jewel and it allows her to play some of her quieter material, which she rarely attempts in noisy environments. The concert at Foxwoods last Friday evening was a perfect example. Jewel was relaxed and very interactive with the audience, but during many songs you could've heard a pin drop, it was so quiet. Not to mention this was one of the most comfortable and best sounding rooms (with a phenomenal PA System!) that we've enjoyed in quite awhile. A very enjoyable night that we filmed and we hope to get a video clip from that up on the tour section for you next week sometime. Jewel is off today and tomorrow, but we're looking forward to the next stops in NJ, NY and MA. I usually wander around outside the venue prior to shows and I've had the great pleasure of meeting thousands of you over the years and I can honestly say Jewel's fans are some of the friendliest and coolest people on the planet. I hope to meet some more of you later this week. If you see me wandering around, come on up and say hi! To: jewel@smoe.org Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hey everyone, Here's an article about the upcoming Jewel show in my local town. (Lowell, MA). I'm sure there will be another article once she plays here tomorrow night, (and I'm going and will write my own write-up!) :) Anyway, enjoy, I thought you all might like to read this: A JEWEL OF MANY FACETS by Austin O'Connor, Lowell Sun Staff Just last spring, Jewel Kilcher, a singer with whom most fams are on a first-name-only basis, was readying for a comeback tour after a self-imposed three-year hiatus from the music business. Her latest album, This Way, buoyed by the hit "Standing Still", had been enjoying brisk sales since its release the previous fall, and a slate of early summer live shows were shaping up as sellouts. And then one day she hopped aboard a colt at a Texas ranch owned by her rodeo-star boyfriend Ty Murray and was summarily deposited on the ground, collarbone first. The late April fall may have snapped her shoulder, but it would take much more to crush Jewel's spirit. After all, the 29-year-old was famously living out of a van in San Diego before she burst onto the pop scene in the mid 1990's with her debut album 'Pieces of You', which spawned several hit singles, spent 114 weeks in the Billboard 200 and sold more than 11 million copies. She's living proof that bad times don't have to last, so it's hardly a surprise that she managed to turn an unjured collarbone into an excuse to improve her live shows. Unable to play guitar during the first part of her summer tour, she dropped the instrument and delved deeper into her vocal work. "I hate admitting this," Jewel says during a recent phone interview, "but I think sometimes I sing better when I'm not playing guitar. I can't shut my eyes and scream and stretch time and melody when I'm not playing the guitar. I hate admitting that, but it's probably true." Jewel, who plays a solo acoustic show at Lowell Memorial Ausitorium tomorrow night, has been fooling around with her songs in her live act for years. In concert, her songs have a different pulse than on her records. In an age where pop songs and musicians seem increasinly programmed and drained of life, and artist who is willing to take such onstage risks stands out as a breath of fresh air. Her fans have taken note, trading bootleg CDs of her shows with the passion of Phishophiles. But Jewel says her stage improcisations often owe more to neccessity than inspiration. "Two things contribute to that," she laughs about her penchant for impromptu rearrangements of music and lyrics to even her biggest hits, "boredom and forgetfulness. If I change lyrics, it's usually because I'm forgetting them. But I love going to a show and hearing new interpretations of things," she continues. "As an artist, I just get really bored singing the same way all the time. It starts to become automatic, so I kind of have to make it new to me." This Way offers more proof that willingness to expand her artistic borders. After recording her first three albums in Los Angeles - 'Pieces of You' was followed by 1998's 'Spirit and 1999's 'Joy: A Holiday Collection', both of which went multiplatinum - she laid down the tracks for 'This Way' in Nashville, and the album has a country twang that jangled the nerves of some longtime fans. Though she knew that taking her sound in a different direction would be a gamble, stagnation was hardly an attractive alternative. In such a context, "Standing Still," the first song on 'This Way', stands as a raucous retort to the artistic perils of resting on laurels. Bit did she ever fear that her new direction might turn off her biggest fans? "The worst death I know is to cater to thoughts like that, because you end up losing your strongest coice, whatever's moving you toward doing something, " she says. "My real fans know that anything I do is going to be for authentic reasons. And the hip, hightly contrived thing doesn't look good on me. It turns people off, including myself." She produced' This Way' herself, the first time she has taken on those duties, but certainly not the last. "I'll probably always produce from now on," she confirms. "The trend now is that the producer is sort of the mastermind (behind an album.) But it wasn't always that way. And now that I know enough about what I want, I think it has to come from me. It's my job and I'd rather have my career fail or succeed on my own." And though music is her first love, her career is a multimedia one. In 1998, she published a book of poems called 'A Night Without Armor', which became a bestseller and sold more than a million copies. She's hard at work on a follow-up collection, this time entirely dedicated to love poems. In 1999 , she made her big screen debut in 'Ride with the Devil', a poorly-recieved Civil War drama. Despite the film's miserable showing, her performance was widely admired, and her screen follow-up is already in the works. She'll star in 'Wave', an ensemble piece that will be financed by her own production company. The project closest to her heart, though, is the Soul City Cafe, her recently formed grassroots artistic outfil designed to encourage and develop new artists. Jason Mraz, the singer-songwriter who will open tomorrow night's show, is a Sout City Cafe discovery. "The industry right now isn't geared to help support and develop artists," she says, explaining why she founded Soul City. "The only way to get a unique artist is by letting an artist develop naturally, and it takes time." Time is what Jewel was lacking three years ago, when she decided to take a break from the music business. "The main reason I quit for those two years was that I got into my job because it was art and I loved it, and I found that I was spending most of my time talking about it," she says. Since her return to music, she's made a point to schedule ample down time into her touring and promotional schedule. So far, it's working. "I've been able to arrange my schedule in a way that's been sustainable, and it's allowed me to maintain and focus on creativity." Another hiatus probably won't come soon, since she's already writing songs for her next album. She's promising a fun sound, using the Big Band records that dominated the war-torn '30's and '40's as a template for the record she hopes will serve as a kind of antidote to similarly uncertain times. Don't expect all the new tunes to be light and cheery, though. Jewel's songs have always been driven by her social and moral conscence - remember, the first song she ever wrote was called "Who Will Save Your Soul?" - and she remains a keen observer of the geopolitical scene. And active one, too. She campaigned vocally for Al Gore during the 2000 presidential election. "I think when povery bites your heart at a young age, you either become more bitter or more compassionate," she says. "I'm a person that lived, at a vertain time in my life, off the kindness of people. And so a lot of my songs are very driven from the news and world and social issues. I'm a person who falls in love as well as watches the news, and so my music is going to reflect a spectrum that everyone feels." Though she has volleyed during this year's tour between full band accompaniment and solo affairs, it'll just be Jewel and her guitar on the Auditorium stage tomorrow night. And it sounds like that's the way she prefers it. "Solo shows can be much more layered," she says. "You can do a lot of things at once. I talk a lot more, and there's a lot of humor." Even more, her solo shows are all about her voice, different now from when it exploded onto the music scene almost a decade ago, but no less powerful. Save for a broken collarbone here and there, Jewel's ride has been a smooth one. But smoothness sometimes sounds like it bores her - like a rodeo rider eyeing a particularly testy bull, Jewel looks forward to the rough spots, even when they result in broken bones. "I've always been drawn to people who had a sungulat voice, who sounded the way they wanted to sound," she says. "The only careers that really sustain over lots of records are the people who take risks." Lauryn Yahoo! HEr powerful, country-tinged voice is astonishing, but it was her quirky jokes that got the gword going at the Lowell Memorial uditorium Friday night. During a two-hour set, the glamorous Alaskan shared a story about a dream she had when she was 16 where Bob Dylan was coming on to her. She confessed that she was wearing fake eyelashes ("in case you were wondering if I was born with it") and delivered a quick-witted comment when a man screamed "I love you Jewel!" in the middle of a ballad. "I bet your girlfriend is really embarrassed now, huh?" Touring to support her CD This Way, Jewel, whose last name is Kilcher, trated the close to sold-out crowd with engaging renditions of her latest work and some old favorites. Her recent hit, "Standing Still" was slow-paced but powerful, and "Jesus Loves You" and "Sometimes It Be That Way," were bare-bone beauties. She mined a lot of material from the 2001 release, but it was not a play-by-the-numbers set. The evening took on a free-form intimacy early on when Jewel looked into the crowd and asked: "What do you feel like hearing?" Someone shouted out "Carnivore," a rare bootleg gem, and she plowed head-long into the acid-tinged song about love and loss. Jewel's singing style is hard to pinpoint. She constantly fluctuates between sweet-tones songstress, evident on "Hands," and passionate siren, on "Life Uncommon." Although she has grown up a lot since her 1994 release 'Pieces of You', she can still appear little-girlish and fragile, and the tender "Break Me," proved that point. With such range and talent, you never know what turn her songs will take. But wherever they end up, it's always a pretty place. After all, not many singers can evoke Patsy Cline and Joni Mitchell in one night. She did so on "The New Wild West." Early hits like "You Were Meant for Me," sung at times in a whisper, and "Who Will Save Your Soul" were late set highlights. The enthusiastic crowd hung on every word and cheered her on with shouts and catcalls. Instead of being annoyed, the 28-year-old seemed to bask in the attention. Alternating between two guitars, she strummed confidently despite breaking her collarbone and a rib in April when she fell off a horse. Before recordgin 'This Way', Jewel took a few years off from the music business to regain her enthusiasm. Judging from last night's performance, it seems she's got it back. At the show's end, when fans rushed the stage, she signed autographs and shook hands before breaking into a five-minute, audience-induced yodel. With her petite frame and movie-star looks, hearing that prairie sound pour our of her was other-worldly. Opener Jason Mraz won the room over with a lively set of jassy lounge music. The newly signed San Diego artist, joined by a bongo player and stand-up baass, broke into a surprising melody of Etta James' "At Last," the them from 'The Love Boat' and his own catchy "Sleep All Day." This drew a standing ovation from a few concertgoers, a rarity for an unknown artist playing these parts. Lauren Yahoo! The endless touring, promotion and interviews had left the singer-songwriter drained and uninspired. "I had become so famous, I was talking about music more than I was making it," she said in a recent phone interview from her home in San Diego. "I had lost the drive once the focus on art changed." But Jewel who will perform Thursday at Indiana University found she couldn't stay away from music for long. She became re-inspired while spending much of her hiatus in Texas with boyfriend Ty Murray, a champion rodeo performer. There, she was able to reconnect with nature and spend time alone in wide-open spaces, something that hadn't been in the schedule for years. Out flowed her fourth album, This Way, released last November, a more personal, grittier collection than her previous efforts and Jewel's first stab at co-production, working with noted guitarist-producer Dann Huff. But she's jumped off the publicity machine that once ran her life, doing only the things that feel right. Jewel recently declined an offer to appear on Rolling Stone magazine's "Women in Rock" cover alongside the likes of Britney Spears, Shakira and Avril Lavigne. "Their list wasn't singer-songwriter based," she said. "You can't knock that sort of thing those girls work very hard. But (the group chosen for the cover) didn't seem to embody women in rock. It wasn't one I wanted to be a part of. Would Chrissy Hynde (of the Pretenders) look at that and laugh? Probably." Then there was the offer to appear on the cover of Maxim, the men's magazine known for its risqui covers. Again, Jewel passed. "It comes down to time opportunities come up all the time that don't move me or aren't convenient to do. My label has known about me that what sells me is just me being true to myself. If it's contrived it would bomb." But her record label, Atlantic, wouldn't have minded the Maxim, um, exposure. "They really wanted me to do that one," Jewel laughed. Her visit to Indiana University's campus marks the second leg of Jewel's "New Wild West" solo acoustic tour. The first part of the tour, which began in mid-August, was the first time she had played guitar through an entire performance since April, when she was injured after being thrown from a horse, breaking her collarbone and a rib. Now fully recovered, Jewel is touring but on her own terms: Three-week bursts with 10 days off to write. "It works really well for me, and I'm a lot happier this time," she said. Jewel's decision to tour without a band was an attempt to return to her musical roots. "I grew up bar-singing with my dad, with him playing guitar. The acoustic show goes back to the way I was raised, an old-school kind of entertainment. An acoustic show is hardest to pull off it's harder than playing with a band. There's more interaction with the audience, and it's an intensely personal show." Jewel's own journey to success is well-known. A singer-songwriter with the face of an angel and a voice to match, Jewel Kilcher spent much of her childhood in Alaska singing in nightclubs with her folk-singer parents. At 18, she lived in a van in San Diego and performed at the Inner Change Cafi, gradually building up a cult following until she was signed by Atlantic Records in 1994. After a meteoric rise to success in 1995 (her first album, Pieces of You, sold more than 11 million copies nationwide), Jewel wrote a best-selling book of poetry, released a sextuple-platinum album, Spirit, put out a Christmas album, starred in Ang Lee's Ride With the Devil, and published a collection of journal writings. It was then that she decided to step back from the business and reconnect with her art. "I'd probably find it pretty easy to be successful without fame. What's important is not needing fame to validate my moves," she said. Jewel is currently working on a "fun, not too serious" album she'd like to put out by June, combining dance music and soul with folk lyrics. After that will come a rootsier singer-songwriter effort. Just don't expect her to bare it all in an attempt to compete with the scantily clad "women in rock" currently taking up so much space on the airwaves and magazine covers. "No one chooses your focus but you. Nobody makes you parade your flesh in front of your music. People said Madonna was liberating for women, but her music was all based on sexual imagery. There's a lot to be said for not showing it all being much more seductive." Opening Jewel's show will be winners of her Soul City Cafi contest, a program she created to provide opportunities for emerging artists. "I started Soul City Cafi because of how corporate the music industry has become. Today, an artist like me never would have been signed," Jewel said, describing the program as a way to get performers into the recording studio immediately, without having to wait years for development. Jewel fans can expect her to continue doing things her own way, regardless of trends in the music industry. "To me, relevance means staying honest about where you are. The most important thing to me is maintaining my authenticity." Here's my review of jewel's solo acoustic show on November 21st, 2002 from the Indiana University Auditorium. It was my first Jewel show ever, weird considering i've been on this list since '98 and i've been a jewel fan since her POY days... It was beautiful venue...one of those ornate theaters Steve Poltz sang his "Dahmer's Song" and "Sugar Boogers" songs in. The audience was suprisingly subdued for the most part. I can see why Poltzy had some problems getting a laugh at times. Opening Act: I dont' know his name, but he was Jewel's lead guitarist in her band last year, so as you can imagine, he was good on the guitar. He did a good job as a solo acoustic singer...although he admited to cheating using a pedal as the rhythm guitar so he could play lead. I don't remember what he played, but he invited a girl to clap along to a banjo song. The funny thing was she looked JUST LIKE jewel!! ...everyone was like "is that jewel" ...but it wasn't ...just some random girl! Then he did a Zepplin cover on the Banjo! ..."Dancing Days" was done really well...he had the slide going! he ended the set by saying to buy his cd in the lobby as he was not yet signed. I was gonna, but it cost 10 bucks for 5 songs...and i'm poor right now, so it wasn't worth it. Jewel: here's the setlist...i don't remember the exact order...and i may be off on a few songs: Does Anybody Believe in Love Anymore - great opener...i never heard it in such good quality, as all i've heard is bootlegs of it, now i see why everyone loves it so much Near You Always - everyone recognized this one and cheered of course!! ...cool talk to crowd- - jewel said hi. i think this is where she told the crowd that she got "in trouble for calling Bob Dylan "gay" Passing Time -she paused where she says "waiting for my Marlon Brando to crash thru the gates" ...then she says 'wait i don't like marlon...who'd hot?' '...i know Paul Newman!' ...then she sings the lyric with "waiting for my Paul Newman to crash...NO wait...he couldn't crash thru anything! he's too old! ...man i better shut up, i'm gonna get in the papers again!' Then she started the song again, this time with "Randy Newman" in place of Marlon Brando. Everything Breaks -not much to say here other than no one had a clue where this song came from...great job though...this song should be on an album someday!! Little Sister (requested) -Jewel began asking for requests at this point...someone yelled out "STEVE POLTZ" for some reason...made me laugh. somebody asked for 1000 Miles Away and she was gonna play it, got her "lyric book" out, but she never played it? hmm...guess she got distracted...nice "little sister" though, again everyone digged it just cuz they knew it! Cowboy Waltz (? requested) -I have no idea what this song was! ...everyone was asking for a yodel, and jewel seemed a little annoyed by that...but she said i have a yodel for ya, but it's a cowboy yodel...and i think that the song was Cowboy Waltz, although i'm not sure. She said it was from a guys point of view. Hands -This is the part of the show that starts to get muddled for me. I think she did hands here, but i'm not sure. It was good...but nothing much to say about it really. Sometimes it Be That Way -i can't really remember much again! ..but i do remember she said when she started playing this "You guys actually listen to the bonus tracks?" Jesus Loves You -at some point, and i'm not sure if it was before this song, she tells a story how Tommy Hilfilger wanted her for her "natural looks" for an ad, but then they 'fixed her teeth' ...the song itself was pretty normal...but good! The New Wild West -not too much to say about it other than she sang it really powefully!! she tuned down the low E string of her guitar for this song, which i didn't know she did for this song, but it added a nice percussive sound in this song Life Uncommon - I think she said she wrote this for her best friend. who graduated from IU!! yay! again another song that utilized that percussive sound caused by the tuned down low E string. She sang this song awesomely...hit some insane notes!! Morning Song -nice song. again rather percussive. ...this is one of my favorite jewel songs...so i was pretty pleased to hear this one! Violet Eyes -she said before the song she wrote this song for her friend who died of cancer....it was a great, emotional performance. Most didn't know this song obviously, but they should! Cold Song -she said before this song that if there was one song she could save and have represent her career as a whole than this would be the song. and of course she added, that as with all great, insightful songs, it is a polka. The people next to me were like "what the hell is this?" ...duh Break Me -nothing abnormal about this song to report...just really powerful and emotional talk to audience- -she told the incident that inspired Racecar Driver. when the dude asked to show jewel's boobs nonchalantly as if he were asking the time. funny story, but pretty routine i guess. Racecar Driver -cool version. she added ooo's and aaah's during the bridge which i hadn't heard before... pretty neat...people were laughing during this song alot...obviously this was new one for most too. Foolish Games -never heard the acoustic version for this...nice You Were Meant for Me -i think she went straight into this one...no drug bust story w/ Steve Poltz...pretty routine i guess kermit intro- -she talked about the first time she heard herself on the radio...on the top 10 between Nirvana and Soundgarden. But she found out she sounds like Kermit the frog when she sings the chorus!! She then looked over to the backstage area and said "there's some guy back there watching football!!! I guess he's ignoring me...What's the score? yeah, he's ignoring me..makes me feel good!" Who Will Save Your Soul -pretty routine, she did her scatting thing....got a good reaction from the audience, not to anyone's surprise. -----encore per la Gloria d'adoraria -opera sounding thing...i think this was the name of it! i don't know! ...nice though...she did it sans guitar Chime Bells -she ended with this yodeling ditty like usual...no guitar, but still fun! She said she figured the people here would like it better than the Cowboy yodel thing... people seemed too obsessed by her yodeling though...she DOES do other things though! overall great show!! i'm not sure what else to say! I smuggled a camara in, so i'll develop pictures and put them on my site...i don't know how well they turned out though, cuz i couldn't use my flash cuz i didn't want to get caught!
