Jewel Recovering From Branding Mishap: Rock star Jewel suffered a broken collarbone and rib April 24th after being bucked off a young horse at boyfriend Ty Murray's ranch in Central Texas. The three-year-old colt, which was a gift from a friend, had bucked before. But Murray, a nine-time world champoin cowboy and the only seven-time world champion all-around cowboy in professional rodeo history, always rides the horse before Jewel to take the hump out of his back. "It was just a freak deal," Murray said. " I thought he was done bucking, and I wouldn't hae put her on him if I didn't [think so]. this isn't a case of some pop star falling off a pony at a dude ranch. This is Jewel's horse-he's a nice horse adn Jewel's ridden all her life. "The fact is, if you're around any kind of livestock long enough there's a good chance that at some point you'! re going to get hurt, I don't care who you are. You can't always predict what an animal's going to do." Jewel was at the ranch for Murray's annual calf branding, where she's roped alongside the rest of the cowboys the last few years. A doctor in attendance accompained Jewel and Murray to Dallas, where X-rays confirmed the diagnosis. She was released immediately thereafter. "Jewel's a [good] hand [with a horse] and she's tough," Murray said. "She's a little sore, but she'll be fine." Jewel resumed her concert schedule with a European Tour that kicked off May 11. Less than four months ago, the singer-songwriter was thrown from a horse and suffered a broken collarbone and rib. She says she's still in some pain but the show must go on. Her latest album is called "This Way," and her first two singles, "Standing Still" and "Break Me," are climbing the charts. According to Jewel, sales don't matter to her. That's easy to say for the singer -- shes sold well over 20 million albums worldwide. CNN caught up to Jewel on her recent tour. CNN: You have found many ways to express yourself -- music, books of poetry, movie roles. What's next? JEWEL: I'm working on a book of love poems right now. Just like a slender novella of love poems. I'm looking at doing another movie. So I hope to be able to continue as many types as I can. I think being creative is like being a farmer. If you have a field and you plant the same crop every year the soil gets depleted, but as you rotate crops your soil gets richer. It isn't always about the crop. It isn't always about what I'm producing. It isn't always about the song I'm writing. It's about how fertile I can remain as an artist. And the more I learn the more I grow, the more I'm around things, the more fertile I am, the better my songs are gonna be, the better my poems are gonna be. That's why I see the value of switching and learning even if the poem, the book tanks. That's not always the point. It's the learning process kind of that really you benefit from. CNN: Tell us about your new single. JEWEL: I love the single. It's called "Break Me" and I thought it was really brave of my label to pick it as a second single. It's not an easy single to break. It's very different. Very stark. It's a poetic love song. No big rhythm track. No big urban sound. It was pretty brave of them. I love the track. I think it's my favorite video I've ever done. CNN: (To Jewels mother) When you look at what Jewel has accomplished, what do you think? LENEDRA J. CARROLL (Jewel's mom): Jewel's career is based on two of her passions. One is her passion for artistry and artistic expression. The other is her interest in making a difference. Those are the guiding stars that we go back to in referencing her career. CNN: Looking back at what you've accomplished, what are you most proud of? JEWEL: I'm very happy with my career. I've found a rhythm that has worked for me. I tour for three weeks and I get 10 days off. I'm able to take those 10 days and write and do what I enjoy. It's more of a sustainable lifestyle rather than just working constantly. My goal has never been I've got to have radio hits and record sales. It's always been make records that I'm proud of and do a great live show. CNN: What type of effect does touring have on you? JEWEL: By the end of my last tour I longed for simplicity. I was glad to live in the car when I did. It was fun, but I'm glad I'm still not doing it. I don't romanticize it to that level. But usually if I'm longing for something like that it means something about my live has to be changed. CNN: You and your mom seem to have a very, very close relationship. JEWEL: Sometimes it's hard to know where she stops and I begin and vice versa. CNN: Tell us about the injuries you sustained when you fell off the horse. JEWEL: I'm okay. It's a broken collarbone, a broken rib. I got bucked off a horse. But as far as bones and injuries go, well, my ribs are in a lot of pain, but I don't have to be in a cast. I won't be playing my guitar for awhile but I'll be able to sing. Thieves absconded with four solar panels, damaging the support brackets in their haste to leave the scene, leaving the Masai of Sukenia high and dry. The solar panels are an integral part of the Sukenia water system, which supplies water to the 3,000 residents and their livestock. Without the solar panels, there is no water. Not to worry, however. It turns out that every available Masai Warrior, and nearly every able-bodied clansperson quickly mobilized in search of the solar panel hijackers. Their search took them across the local plains and mountains, and even across the border into Kenya before the miscreants were apprehended. Some of you may be curious as to what justice was dealt by the spear wielding Masai. Rest assured that the offending parties were hauled in-front of the proper authorities and will be held responsible for most of the damages plus a fine. The ClearWater Team will be stopping by Sukenia on our upcoming expedition in early September to help the authorities assess the damage, and more importantly to make sure it all gets back into working order, so the water will continue to flow with as little interruption as possible. We suspect that the damages will cost more to fix than the apprehended Masai can afford to pay. If you would like to help with repairs to this project, and to support others like it, please go to: http://www.clearwaterproject.org/donations.html. Our return expedition could not come at a better time to help get this system back on line. Hi All, Now for something that I'm excited about and have been looking forward to for some time. Please read on. When socializing at various Jewel concerts and related events over the years, I've been fortunate to personally meet and talk to thousands of you. Much to my enjoyment, these conversations inevitably drift to "other music," a topic I'm always passionate about. I'm constantly asked about what other artists I'm currently listening to or recommend. Without hesitation, I usually bring up one incredible artist, who has consistently knocked me out since I first had the pleasure of listening to her perform - Patty Griffin. My first exposure to Patty was during the summer of 1996, when she was invited to open the now legendary private fan concert, Jewelstock, in Bearsville, NY, prior to Jewel's tour supporting Neil Young. Like everyone else in the room, I was immediately captivated by Patty's distinctively haunting voice, both powerful and pure, and was fascinated by many (if not all!) of her thought-provoking songs. At the end of this very memorable night, Jewel herself remarked to the captivated audience, how incredible Patty was and questioned her own worthiness of having Patty open for her - a strong compliment indeed. After catching Patty numerous times over the proceeding years and countless listens to her albums "Living With Ghosts" and "Flaming Red," not to mention her absolutely scorching performance of "Cain" on the Lilith Fair CD, it became obvious to me that Patty is one of those extremely rare talents whose songwriting and recordings are not only emotionally gripping, but that even in a stark acoustic framework, they continue to reveal increasing depth with every listen. To me, this is the ultimate in what I look for in music and Patty rarely fails to deliver. With her new album, "1000 Kisses," recently released on Dave Matthews' ATO Records, garnering rave reviews from longtime fans, musicians and critics alike, Patty is now finally poised to connect with a larger audience and it's about time! We are pleased to announce Patty Griffin as our newest Guest Artist at Jewel's site and personally invite you to learn more about her and experience this music for yourself. To access this new feature from the www.jeweljk.com home page, click "favorites" on the lower menu. This will bring you to our newest Guest Artist feature. Click Patty's picture and you're in. (Note: There is an issue preventing some Internet Explorer browsers from access. This will be fixed soon. Netscape, AOL and most IE browsers should work fine.) This feature can also direct you to the best web locations to further educate yourself about Patty. If you've yet to investigate this area of Jewel's web site, we highly recommend that you do. After checking out Patty's feature, spend some time in our guest artist archive. You'll discover many other great artists, both emerging and established, who might not get the media attention they deserve, but are nonetheless, extremely worthy of your attention. When we first began our jeweljk.com "guest artist" features several years ago, I personally wanted to feature Patty immediately, but was unable to work out logistics until now. Our thanks to Patty's team at Vector Management for helping us to make this happen. If like me, you are also looking for passion, intensity and depth in music, look no further - Patty Griffin delivers, as her voice wraps itself around your heart. -MrBB ******************************************** Now Playing: Patty Griffin - "1000 Kisses" ******************************************** Jewel concert information, radio and TV scheduling updates available 24 hours a day at: http://jeweljk.com/low/calendar.html ******************************************** --- You can help a friend subscribe by having them send a blank email to join-jewelink@list.jeweljk.com To view selected back issues of JeweLink, please visit the JeweLink Archive at the www.jeweljk.com calendar page. Dubbed the New Wild West tour, the outing will find Jewel in smaller venues across the West Coast and Southwest. This will be the first time Jewel will play her guitar for a whole set since she was bucked off her horse this April. Since then, she's only been able to finger-pick a few acoustic numbers during the This Way Tour, leaving her feeling a bit exposed up on stage. "It's very strange," Jewel told Rolling Stone. "There's a much more extensive dance routine, but with a broken collarbone. It's nowhere near as sexy, but my belly's showing." Singer-songwriter Scooter Scudieri will open on all dates. Scudieri was one of the artists featured on the Soul City Cafe component of Jewel's tour, a showcase for up-and-coming musical acts and spoken-word artists. For an artist who's been performing live since the age of ten, Jewel has not burned out on the grueling process. "Any time anybody is spending their own money to come see you, that's a gift," she said. "They're supporting my lifestyle and I'm very aware of that. I don't have to have a day job. I can write more. It used to be every household would have a poet, and now it's not one rich family that supports a poet, it's the nation, through ticket sales and buying CDs. It's been a dream come true." You'll find the new weekly photos are now online. This week's images were shot on the final night of the "This Way Tour" at SDSU in San Diego on July 28th. For those of you who will be wondering, the last photo in the series is a shot of a few crewmembers goofing on Jewel's dancing ability. You'll also find a new review posted, from Jewel's Sunday night show in Sioux City, on the review page. Audio clips from Jewel's "New Wild West Tour" will begin next week, but we are still posting new audio and video clips for you this week. In fact, speaking of audio, we have something special for you this week! We're taking you to Jewel's soundcheck at the Tower Theatre in Upper Darby on June 26th. The entire recording has been posted in three (longer than usual) files. During part one, you'll hear the band warming up on "Do You" with Jewel arriving and joining in toward the end. Part two continues with equipment testing while they run through a loose "Do You Want To Play." Part three concludes with "I Won't Walk Away," while the in-ear monitors and final PA system adjustments are made. Now online for your enjoyment in the www.jeweljk.com Tour Section. Just click the banner on the main page or go directly to: http://www.jeweljk.com/low/tour.html We hope to see many more of you during the upcoming solo acoustic concerts. To those of you who've asked, official ManiMerch Jewel merchandise will continue to be available at these smaller more intimate shows. Stop by the ManiMerch booth and say hi! We'll continue to keep you informed as additional Jewel Tour Section updates occur. ******************************************** ***NOTES FROM MrBB/WHAT'S NEXT? Hi All, The "New Wild West Tour" is rolling along and in this more intimate solo acoustic context, Jewel has been offering more of her comical spontaneous side and a diverse range of song material. And her shoulder has healed to the point where she is relatively comfortable playing her guitar all night. In addition to stripped down vocal/guitar renderings of songs from her albums, she's planning on unveiling additional new material from her 2002 songwriting burst. Those of you who have been following Jewel's career the longest, will also be intrigued because she's been digging into her past to resurrect a few older favorites and unreleased rarities. This will continue with a few surprises in store. With her new material accumulating, she's also begun thinking in terms of recording her next album, so there likely won't be such an extended wait between albums this time. Although sessions are not yet planned, it's possible that preproduction may begin before the end of the year. She's enjoyed touring so much this year, that plans are also being made to add additional concerts into November, several Christmas-related events in December and additional touring early next year is now being considered. As new concert dates are confirmed, we'll keep you informed and you can always check the jeweljk.com calendar page for all currently confirmed dates. There's also exciting planning in the works for the Soul City Cafe community and additional Jewel news to unveil in coming weeks. So stick around! This unique memorial for New York, the nation and the world, features the now famous "Faces Of Ground Zero," a photographic tribute by longtime LIFE and TIME photographer Joe McNally, who shot lifesize Polaroids using the Moby C, the world's largest Polaroid camera. In the weeks following 9/11, in a studio near Ground Zero, nearly 300 individuals stood before McNally's lens and shared their remarkable stories. The extraordinary actions of these ordinary citizens inspired the world. "Faces of Ground Zero" debuted at Grand Central Terminal to great acclaim and then travelled to Boston, London, Chicago, San Francisco and Los Angeles. It is returning to NYC for the anniversary of 9/11. Well, it took about 10 times longer than expected but I'm pleased to report that the Best Of The Innerchange THREE CD SET is finished and we're ready to begin taking names for the EDA list's first official CD tree. All of the material, including the bonus tracks were ripped from 1st, 2nd, or 3rd generation tapes so it's about the best quality you can find right now of this material, recorded mostly in 1994 in the early days of Jewel's career (pre-POY) by old-time list member Neal Copperman. The Innerchange songs are all taken from the "Innerchange Days" and the "More Innerchange" tapes. The bonus tracks, though low generation, are unfortunately not the greatest quality but they were included anyway because they're pretty rare and, well, I like them! They are from various other shows recorded in later years. The track list is below. If you would like to be included in this tree as either a branch or a leaf, please send the following information to Allan Ray at texaspete4@hotmail.com (not to me). Allan has kindly offered to administer this tree: Your name Your email Your location (city, state, country) Can you be a branch (burn copies for other people)? If so, how many sets of 3 are you willing to make? Please, if you can possibly offer to be a branch, do so! We expect a high demand for this set and don't want any one person to be over-burdened. Once you sign up you will be sent further instructions by Allan. If the demand is really high, we may have to have 2 "waves" which will also be explained in your confirmation email. TRACK LIST..... DISC 1 1. Sometimes It Be That Way 2. A Housewife's Revenge 3. Star Child 4. Poem Song 5. See Sassy 6. The Man Who's Already Gone 7. 501 Beauty Queen 8. Silver Satin Wings 9. I Don't Care 10. Can't Take My Soul 11. Spivy Leeks 12. Silver Lining (with Steve Poltz) 13. Food Stamp Love (with Steve Poltz) 14. Love Is A Rose (with Steve Poltz) 15. Comfortably Numb 16. Afraid It's Too Late 17. Adrian 5. My Own Private God's Gift To Women 6. Daddy, She's A Goddess (with Steve Poltz) 7. Chime Bells (with intro) BONUS TRACKS: 8. Now That You Have Me 9. Raven 10. No More Broken Hearts 11. Dr. Hypnoto Eases Your Fears About Jewel (hilarious Atlantic promo tape sent to radio programmers encouraging them to play the then-unknown Who Will Save Your Soul) As you will note, we have left off most album material out of respect to Atlantic. The exceptions are Down So Long, which is left on in it's very rare original slow version, and Adrian, which is also rare in live performance. PLEASE NOTE: THESE CD'S ARE NEVER TO BE SOLD UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES! By taking part in this tree, you are agreeing to pass on this music by gift or trade only. You will be required to send blanks and postage only (or you can work out a trade with your branch if he/she is willing). If anyone has recordings of recent live shows (particularly from the NWW tour) let me know and we might be able to do a trade. I'm planning to do J-cards for the set but will need help with putting them up on a website so people can download them. Let me know if you have a site that can accomodate this and are willing to help! Also, if anyone has any photos from the Innerchange, please let me know. Enjoy! :-) Amy N.
