Roundabout Outdoor brings fresh water to communities through Playpumps. These are children's merry-go-rounds situated on top of a borehole. As children spin, water is pumped from underground into 2500-liter tanks, standing seven meters above the ground. Billboards, carrying consumer and health messages to the community, screen the tanks, which are situated in schools or community focal points. This project offers businesses a method to achieve social responsibility in their communities by participating in an environmentally sound water-health program, while at the same time accessing a powerful consumer-marketing tool. Revenue received from advertising billboards guarantees funds for ongoing maintenance and sustainability of each Playpump installation. The ClearWater Project, working to improve the quality of life for millions of people, funded this particular pump. She's also worked up a few new jazz-flavored covers that have surfaced during her encores lately. If you enjoy checking out Jewel's setlists, visit the setlist page at Jewel's web site which is linked from the calendar page. Following the remaining shows in Europe, Jewel and band will return home for a bit of rest before launching the North American Tour in Tampa on June 14th. We look forward to seeing many more of you this summer. As previously announced, Jewel and her mother and manager, Lenedra Carroll, have created Soul City Cafi as a multifaceted program designed to encourage and expose emerging talent. Soulcitycafe.com is now live and you are invited! A longtime dream of Jewel and Lenedra, soulcitycafe.com is a new online home for not only the Jewel fan community, but for anyone who is passionate about supporting groundbreaking art and ideas that shape the world. The first opportunity to do just that comes in the form of Soul City Cafi ArtBeat, a live showcase of developing artists that were handpicked by Jewel and Lenedra. These artists will open eight of Jewel's This Way Tour shows. The artists featured at the eight special Soul City Cafi ArtBeat venues span genres, from solo acoustic to folk pop to hard rock to slam poets and spoken word artists. Jewel says, I listen to all different kinds of music, and I think my fans do as well. My mother and I are committed to supporting new artists, and we felt it was equally important that we not limit ourselves to a certain style of music. I know when I first went out on the road just as a girl alone with her guitar, I often found myself opening for a hard rock act. It was a terrific experience to play in all sorts of situations, and it also proved that audiences are really receptive to a wide spectrum of music. Visit us at the ArtBeat page of soulcitycafe.com to learn all about hot up-and-coming musical acts like Think of England, Scooter Scudieri, Rebeka Reed, Shade and Soul City Cafi headliners M2M. Read all about them and hear their music right on the site. And look for incredible spoken word artists Dustin Fox, Nafeesa Monroe and Ishmael Beah and hard-hitting bands like Edify and Off By One to come aboard throughout the week. In addition, two videography interns from Columbia College in Chicago - Johnny Derango and Roberto Alcantara - have been chosen to work with a seasoned videographer to shoot footage of the shows. Their efforts will provide content for the site, so regardless of where you are, you can follow the Soul City Cafi ArtBeat artists performances throughout the tour. Be sure to explore the whole site to get a good idea of where Soul City Cafi is heading in other areas. Just like Jewel says, Soul City Cafi is a community designed to "support not only the arts but a greater sense of community in the world." And if you like what you see, consider applying to be on the SCC 'sider teams, to help build this community from the inside out! Here is the schedule for Soul City Cafi ArtBeat shows during Jewel's U.S. Tour. The ArtBeat schedule is subject to change. You can find complete up-to-date scheduling information, 24 hours a day, at the new www.soulcitycafe.com web site. If you've yet to check out the new www.soulcitycafe.com web site, we highly recommend that you do. Be sure to explore the whole site to get a good idea of where Soul City Cafe is heading. And if you like what you see, consider applying to be on the SCC 'sider teams, to help build this community from the inside out! The artists featured at the eight Soul City Cafe ArtBeat venues on Jewel's tour span genres, from solo acoustic to folk pop to hard rock to slam poets and spoken word artists. You can find complete up-to-date scheduling information at the new SCC site. Now, onto the musically educational portion of my notes today. Quite a few of you have written us asking about those two "new jazz-flavored songs" Jewel has been performing during some of her encores lately. The songs are titled "The Other Woman" and "Love Me Or Leave Me" (not to be confused with Jewel's own "Love Me, Just Leave Me Alone"). Jewel became enamored by these two songs after hearing the Nina Simone versions, which were recorded for her 1966 Phillips LP "Let It All Out." Although her versions can arguably be considered the definitive versions and she is indeed a songwriter, in addition to being a gifted pianist and incredibly soulful singer, Nina Simone did not write these two songs. "The Other Woman" was written by Jesse Mae Robinson, and "Love Me Or Leave Me" was written by the team of Walter Donaldson and Gus Kahn for the 1928 stage musical "Whoopie." The album originally featuring these two songs is long out of print, but if you would enjoy hearing these Nina Simone recordings, both tracks can be found on several "best of" compilations. Jewel's versions are quite remarkable and I suspect she'll keep them around for awhile. That's about it for today. Stop by www.soulcity.com for a visit and don't forget to arrive at these special shows early and join in the fun! Hate Jewel. Fear her manipulative mom. Laugh at her poetry. Give her props for not fixing that snaggletooth. Marvel at her staying power. Almost seven years ago, I interviewed the fresh-from-Alaska Jewel Kilcher, before she'd sold many copies of her first album. At the time, she'd just parked the van she lived in prior to her fabled rags-to-riches saga, was happy not to be a waitress anymore, and promised herself and her growing public a long career. Two albums and a book of poetry later, Jewel is still Jewel. Emerging from a hiatus with a bull-ridin' boyfriend (rodeo champ Ty Murray), a new Nashville-tooled record (This Way) recorded with producer Dann Huff (Celine Dion, Reba McEntire, Shania Twain), Jewel seems back in the saddle. Until, literally, she was thrown from a horse during an April riding mishap. While recuperating, Jewel again answered a barrage of probing questions. Q: How bad was your accident? What happened, exactly? A: We had a branding in Texas (at Murray's ranch). I have a colt that a cowboy gave me, and he bucks with you a little bit when you first saddle him. So my boyfriend got on him and rode that out of him. But it wasn't out of him. As soon as I got on him, he bucked me off. Pretty wicked. I broke my collarbone and a rib. Q: What's changed since 1995? A: Everything has changed, and nothing's changed. Whatever ghosts you have in your head follow you anywhere, which I knew before I got into this. So far, I've been able to stay true to my goals, which were to try and create a career that would give me longevity and artistic freedom. And somehow in the meantime, I sold a shitload of records! Q: Did that success take something away from you? A: If you stop ringing true, then people are going to stop being touched. You have to really, really fight in this business, and you have to keep writing true. You also have to take a lot of risks and not care about record sales and not care about radio hits yet really care about how you're evolving and maturing and how you're metamorphosing as an artist. I fight for that more than anything, and it's a hard thing to fight for. By the end of Spirit, my second record, I'd had it. For years, I quit. That was it: no more chick singer. I didn't know if I'd ever come back. I started feeling more like a pop star than something useful. It wasn't very fulfilling, and I had to do something that would make me happy. So I quit until I knew what it was. I think part of it was extreme fatigue -- I worked endlessly. Another part of it was, you know, your head gets too full with other people's voices -- statistics and things that are just garbage. As long as I can get away to the quiet and a place like I was raised with open space all around me, I can rejuvenate and feel pretty gregarious and forthcoming again. Q: Did you really think about quitting music for good, abandoning your childhood dream? A: When you're 18, you dream a dream, and when you're 25, it may not look like you anymore. And you've got to face that. I could have continued for quite a few more years, living on the vapors of something that truly wasn't me any longer. It would be like a tree that has died but is still standing. And unless I found something that made me burn again, that made me need it again, I just wasn't going to come back. It just makes me really unhappy to be that way. Fame was never enough to go, "Gee whiz, isn't this cool?" I've always been able to beat the system, whatever that means. I need to feel like I have integrity. But the game got boring -- constantly being on tour, never being home, never writing, always talking. But I do still enjoy it, and it's nice to know I'm still in love with this. I was definitely worried I wasn't. Q: Why did you make your new album in Nashville? A: I like it there because a lot of people just want to make a record. They don't care if your haircut's the coolest or what the Goo Goo Dolls' latest guitar tone was -- you know, all that shit that sort of insidiously creeps into a record. Or you suddenly have this producer trying to give you his idea of what radio sounds like. I wanted to get away from all of that and find a producer that would do nothing but, well, my bidding, really. And Dann was that guy. He has an ego that's really in check. He was there to make a record for me. That may sound strange to you, but I can't tell you how important that is. This is the first record that sounds like me. Q: Have writers asked you about some of your chores on Murray's ranch -- like castrating bulls? A: Yes, quite a few have asked. But I mean, I don't think it's a big deal. I mean, golly, it's just part of life. I got a letter from somebody saying, "Do you enjoy their pain?" Q: How did you and Moby become friends? A: He was playing a little show here in San Diego, no more than 200 people. A friend and I went backstage, and we just hit it off instantly. He's a fax friend: He draws cartoons and I draw cartoons, and so we send each other faxes. Q: Doesn't he give you shit about rodeo's treatment of animals? A: He's curious about it, but Moby's never given me shit. Moby's not didactic at all -- he does what he believes in, but he doesn't act like a Nazi. Plus, it isn't an issue because there isn't an unfair treatment of animals, in my opinion. A lot of that is mythology; I don't know how it got built up. I guess people just don't have any comprehension; they don't understand because they've never been around animals. They don't understand that people are managing animals in the most humane way possible. Those animals are -- those animals cost $50,000! That's like saying people are going to abuse a car that cost them $50,000. You have to take really good care of those animals, because if they don't perform, you don't get paid. So you can't starve an animal or hurt an animal. I think the funniest argument is that people think they always put something around the bull's testicles to make them buck. ( Laughs) But if you had anything around your testicles, would you buck? Q: I'm not sure -- would I? A: No. You'd be very still. SOLOCHEK, Times Staff Writer ) St. Petersburg Times published June 15, 2002 TAMPA -- Alaskan folk star Jewel kicked off the American leg of her This Way tour Friday at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center, thrilling a near sellout crowd of 2,500 with more than 90 minutes of her intensely personal, poetic reflections on life. Having broken her collarbone and a rib in April, Jewel relied on her backing band to provide the music for most of her set, focusing her energy on soaring vocals that entranced the audience. She played several songs from her latest CD, including the hit Standing Still and the skewering Jesus Loves Me. Jewel also reached back for the crowd pleasers Foolish Games and You Were Meant For Me, which became a sing-along, as well as more than a dozen other tunes. Band members Mark Oakley and Stuart Mathis on guitar, T-Bone Hannon on bass, Steve George on keyboards and Trey Gray on drums skillfully bolstered Jewel's performance, never getting in the way. Perhaps most pleasing, though, was when she shooed the band away for a 30-minute acoustic set for which Jewel slung a guitar around her neck and played. When she could remember the songs, that is. She trotted out one number, only to toss it aside remarking that she did not recall how it went. "Okay, we're not doing that one," Jewel said with a laugh, quickly moving on. Out came a silly polka in which she sang, "When your nose is running, it's a perfect time for kissing and hugging. Do you want to catch a cold with me?" Next was the gorgeous ballad Grey Matter, followed by a remembrance of a friend she said had died of cancer. The band returned to close out the show with Jewel, whose voice was in fine form. She ranged from coquettish, getting guys to scream as she sang, "Do you want to play?" to a belt in several songs that would have made Janis Joplin proud. She only looked uncomfortable in that she seemed not to know what to do with her hands when she did not have a guitar in them. But Jewel bantered with the crowd, and they loved her back. A couple of fans shouted so much that at one point she urged them to shut up so she could play. The rest of the audience burst into applause. Jewel released This Way in late 2001, and then toured Asia and Europe before heading back to the states. She plays Fort Lauderdale tonight and Orlando on Sunday, with her 40-date tour ending in September in California. The Norwegian teen duo M2M opened with a 25-minute set of mainstream pop about absent boyfriends and bad days. Impressively, the girls, Marit Larsen and Marion Ravn, wrote many of their lyrics. At first clearly apprehensive, they seemed to warm to the crowd toward the end of the performance. Larsen, the primary singer of the two, had a powerful if sometimes breathy voice that could take her places. The collarbone and rib she broke when a horse threw her in April hampered her playing skills, she said. ``But I will be thrilling you with my dance moves,'' she joked. Actually, the singer-songwriter did play guitar during the show's solo portion - ``I can't strum, but I can finger- pick a little,'' she explained to the crowd of 2,425 at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center's Carol Morsani Hall. Friday's show was opening night for Jewel's U.S. tour. But she and her band - keyboardist Steve George, drummer Trey Gray, bassist T-Bone Hannon, and guitarists Stuart Mathis and Mark Oakley - were in fine form, having just completed a European tour. If Jewel felt the need to compensate for her impaired guitar skills, she put the effort into her vocals, which were far more powerful and soulful than she's captured on record, although her latest album, last year's ``This Way,'' comes a lot closer to the energy of her live performances than have previous albums. Jewel mined ``This Way'' for much of her set and it provided many of the highlights. The single ``Standing Still'' was a brisk and pleasing piece of alternative pop, and ``Serve the Ego'' and ``Everybody Needs Someone Sometime'' were late-set highlights. Older favorites also got a big response from the crowd. ``You Were Meant For Me'' got the crowd into sing-along mode, which Jewel encouraged by having the band play quietly and letting the crowd carry the song for a chorus. She knows how to encourage a crowd and when to discipline it, as well. She played the opening chords of ``Grey Matter'' over and over, waiting for the rowdy crowd to quiet down. Just as it did, a lone voice called out, prompting a laughing Jewel to exclaim, ``Shut the ... up!'' But that was before the singer-songwriter popular for the lilting folk songs put out her latest platinum seller, This Way. The album that Rolling Stone called "elegant, earthy, engaged" came as a result of a therapeutic two-year hiatus that found Jewel assessing her career for much of the time along the open spaces of her rodeo champion boyfriend's Texas ranch. During that time, Jewel said, she had fallen out of love with the spotlight and its never-ending demands. "I promoted way more than I wrote and, for me, writing makes me happy," the 28-year-old said from the San Diego ranch that she shares with her mom. But even her writing began to suffer, leaving Jewel with a feeling of desperation. "I got into this job at 18 because it was the first thing I loved," Jewel said. "To lose that was frightening. I thought I'd have to find something else, and so it was nice at the end of two years that I fell back in love with it. "I knew what kind of record I wanted to make," she said. "And I knew what things to change to guarantee it would not happen again." Jewel's biggest problem was scheduling. Following the breakthrough of 1995's Pieces of You, Jewel toured more than a month at a time with no weekend breaks or holidays off. One Christmas, she sang for President Clinton at the White House despite being run down from pneumonia. As Jewel puts it, "I wasn't getting better." Constant touring had affected her hearing in one ear, and Jewel was told that if she didn't rest soon, it would become permanent. Jewel said that she started to feel ungrateful for the success that had befallen her at the age of 22. "This isn't a job you should be unhappy in," she said. "That's another reason I wanted to quit. That and the fact that I talked to a guy from England ... who saw me on two television shows at the time and said he could tell that I didn't really want to be there. I'm really bad at faking it when I'm not happy." Fortunately for Jewel, who also is a best-selling poet, rest came shortly after she finished promoting her 1998 follow-up to Pieces of You, Spirit. For Jewel, rest meant getting back to the way she was raised in Alaska. Back to nature. She said that it was the stillness there on her boyfriend's ranch that allowed her time to reclaim both her health and creative voice, resulting in what Billboard magazine called "[her] most ambitious effort yet," albeit This Way is also her least accessible to the masses. "You don't just make records for you; otherwise, you just sing in your bedroom all day," Jewel said. "If you don't have something useful to say and if you don't feel like you're adding to the craft, you should just let your heroes do it. You shouldn't be a part of it. But I didn't want to make a record until I felt like I knew what I had to say and I felt like it was valuable." Jewel said that she didn't have a problem. The songs off This Way flowed with little effort. "I wrote Jesus Loves You during a walk along a river," Jewel said. "It took me five minutes." Many of the songs are reflective, such as Standing Still, which harbors two meanings for Jewel. The first, she said, is love. "It's me wondering if me moving so much and my lifestyle causes my love life to stand still," Jewel said, explaining there's also a more cryptic meaning to the song that may not occur to people listening. "I wrote it about the fact that fame really affords a prolonged adolescence and that unless you're careful emotionally, you start standing still to where you're a child and you're bratty and your writing quits developing and many dangerous things like that." As for her own life, Jewel said that she is no longer standing still but taking charge of her singing career. She is touring North America, playing three weeks straight and then allowing for 10 days of reflection at a time. I'm planning to throw up a quick web page (I had actually planned for it to be up by now, but have been busy) soon... So far I have a list of those who responded before and to a mailing to previous attendees. If you are interested, you can contact me at annualbearsville@aol.com I will probably get the page up mid next week since we'll be busy with the Jewel show on Friday and my daughter's birthday on Tuesday... For those of you wondering what this is, you can see a brief history/explanation of the event at the end of this email - after the attendee list - this is mostly taken from the Bearsville gathering page for 2000. Camping is basically $9 per night per person. Attendees so far include: Rob, Tammy, Ahmetia & Katerina Campbell Tom & Rachel O'Brien Tom & Tiffany Proven Laura & Jon Mike Connell (maybe for his customary 6 hours ;-) Bill Bartholomew Dan & Leif Amy Neufield (maybe) Eric Montas (at least one day) Erica Covallo (maybe) Kelly Gallagher Gina & Jake Cheyenne & Donny (maybe - friends of Gina & Jake) Iris (maybe) Please let me know if you would like to be added or removed from my list.... Hope to hear from many of you soon :-) Tammy :-) OK, What bands have you got lined up and how much are the tickets? No no no....this ain't that kinda Woodstock event. This is just a little ol' EDA gathering that was born in 1997 and has developed into an annual event to enable the subscribers of our Jewel fandom community to get together and hang out for a peaceful fun weekend in the lovely Catskill Mountains of New York State. Basically, it's as simple as this. Many folks believe the Jewel list was really "spiritually" born when Hiranya first announced JewelStock in early June 1996. (Hiranya was then the lists' main contact with Jewel and her management, as she worked for Jewel in the office) The JewelStock event itself was quite special, and many friendships were formed during those three days in Woodstock/Bearsville in July 1996. Since then many "EDA gatherings" have happened, arguably due to JewelStock, with most of them occurring without Jewel anywhere near the place (i.e. EDA gatherings generally are not featured around a concert of Jewel's, although some are). Five years ago, as the first anniversary of JewelStock rolled around, the idea for a major reunion/campout/EDA gathering in the Woodstock/Bearsville area surfaced, thus Bearsville 97 was born. The next summer we had Bearsville 98. After much intense brainstorming via conference calls, we decided to name last years' event Bearsville 99. Sticking with tradition. while adding two digits, this years will be known as Bearsville 2002. BV 97, through BV2001 were rousing successes, as over 30 people attended at various times of the events. These times musical entertainment was not part of the events, and it wasn't needed, as list members pretty much hung out and had fun, took in the Catskill Mountains, went to Woodstock to be hippies for a day, partook in other activities such as Tubing and Horseback Riding and last year a few of us went to a 'beach'... - not to mention attempting to get us booted from the campgrounds with fireworks... Let's see, who brought those?? Ahem.... Dennis??? ;-) From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Thu Jun 20 19:20:18 2002 Received: from smoe.org (ident-user@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by smoe.org (8.12.2/8.12.2) with ESMTP id g5KNKIG7005779 for ; Thu, 20 Jun 2002 19:20:18 -0400 (EDT) Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.12.2/8.12.2/Submit) id g5KNKHik005739 for jewel-news-outgoing; Thu, 20 Jun 2002 19:20:17 -0400 (EDT) Received: from pronetisp.net (mail.pronetisp.net [12.23.44.4]) by smoe.org (8.12.2/8.12.2) with SMTP id g5KNKFG7005704 for ; Thu, 20 Jun 2002 19:20:15 -0400 (EDT) Received: (qmail 31715 invoked from network); 20 Jun 2002 23:07:05 -0000 Received: from dialin-bing13-197.pronetisp.net (HELO oemcomputer.smoe.org) (12.96.182.197) by 0 with SMTP; 20 Jun 2002 23:07:05 -0000 Message-Id: <5.1.0.14.2.20020620191944.00a414e0@127.0.0.1> X-Sender: mikec@mail.smoe.org X-Mailer: QUALCOMM Windows Eudora Version 5.1 Date: Thu, 20 Jun 2002 19:20:26 -0400 To: jewel@smoe.org From: Mike Connell Subject: Jewel-News: FWD: JeweLink - Tour Section Update: New Live Video! Her current tour - which was nearly postponed after she suffered injuries in a horse- riding accident - won't be a showcase just for songs from her current album, "This Way" (Atlantic), but also for her latest venture, Soul City Cafe. It's a kind of "Star Search" project she created to help cultivate and promote new talent, and some of the uncut gems she's found will open the show when her tour hits Jones Beach on Saturday. "I wanted to create a platform that supported stuff that isn't necessarily mainstream, nor necessarily ready to bear fruit in the next year," Jewel said. "So I've found a lot of local artists that have good buzzes, good local followings, and I'm taking them on the road." With the Soul City Cafe support network Jewel hopes to serve a need that's been plaguing the music industry lately. "I'm one of the last artists that kind of snuck in with the idea of development in mind," she said. But just as Jewel is settling in to her new role as mentor, major record labels are continuing to abandon the idea of artist development. "And that is really killing longevity," she said. "If you're a farmer, you don't do things that are just in a six- month bearing. You stagger it. Some will come to fruit in three years; some in two years; some, one; some in 10 years." Her attitude is also the direct result of advice she received from Bob Dylan and Neil Young, who both told her not to base her career on hit records. Despite their incredible songbooks, both Young and Dylan have released a few albums that were clunkers, a fact not lost on Jewel. "I think that's something that usually the press and the industry don't understand. They look for something that's constant, but art is organic; you're looking at an organic crop and everything is going to have a fallow season," she said. "Getting that kind of advice from Neil Young or Bob Dylan - it shapes your career. Even when I was courted by labels, when I was 18 years old, I talked to them about wanting to do my 20th and 30th record. Taking a year off, for me, was just about trying to get back to being able to write well, instead of continuing something to milk a hit or milking an image." Jewel was forced to take some unscheduled time off back in April when she suffered a broken collarbone and rib after she was tossed from a horse at the Texas ranch of her boyfriend, rodeo champ Ty Murray. Though she recovered enough to begin the North American leg of her tour on time last week, her still-healing injuries have limited her guitar playing. For now, Jewel will be able to pick a couple of songs on the guitar until her strumming arm gets stronger. But for Jewel, live performances aren't about her guitar playing. "It's a very particular time in American history, world history, and I get to be out talking with the people," she said. "I wouldn't trade that for anything." WHERE&WHEN Jewel, 8 p.m. Saturday. This Sunday night at Jewel's Boston show, VH1 will be taping segments for a Rock Across America report. They'll be interviewing Jewel and shooting Soul City Cafe ArtBeat and Jewel performances. The show featuring Jewel is scheduled to air on July 6th, during VH1's Top 20 Countdown and will repeat several times throughout that week. Also, for those of you attending Jewel's Wantaugh, NY and Boston, MA concerts this weekend, don't forget to get there early and join us for the Soul City Cafe ArtBeat performances. However, during her acoustic set last night, Jewel began strumming her guitar again and her improving comfort level led to an adventurous night all around. (You can view the setlist, along with every setlist from the tour at the www.jeweljk.com Tour section.) I've not seen one of her larger American audiences be quite so attentive during an acoustic set in a long time. She was also in top comedic form with her stage banter, not relying on tried and tested stories, but rather going for it with total abandon - with hilarious and lengthy results. It may have been the most engaging performance of the tour so far. And it was a full moon. Alas, she did not play Nicotine Love.. but it was close.. I'll get to that in a minute. First of all, she was in fantastic voice tonight.. totally breathtaking. The venue was very small and intimate, and had decent acoustics, so everything sounded pretty good. The drums were a little loud at times, but nothing that detracted from the enjoyment of the show. The acoustic set was definitely the highlight.. although the second band set was also fantastic... lots of energy. The only dissapointment was that she had to cut the encore to just Foolish Games due to the venue curfue... which was irritating. I'm gonna go through the show song by song.. because it's fun and not that many people have been doing that. I Won't Walk Away - a good opener. Jewel's mic volume was a little low and she kept gesturing to her sound guy to turn it up. He did, and there were no further problems. Standing Still - very energetic and fun, but I've seen this song performed live so many times. She took gifts from the audience after this song. A guy in front of me gave her a rose. My friend went to give her an empty water bottle as a joke, but she had moved onto something else by the time by friend got going with it. Do You Want To Play - I LOVE this song live. It was definitely a highlight.. it translates very well live from the record, and it's hard to believe it was the same song she played on the Spirit Tour. It's evolved so much, and I think for the better. Jesus Loves You - This is a song that I think will end up being played just acoustically on future tours, and probably for the better... although I like the electric guitar beginning, and as opposed to the acoustic. Hands - I've never loved this song, but always liked it ok... it's very good live.. it's evolved well I think. The vocals at the end are great. Til We Run Out of Road - Much better than the album version. Her vocals at the end are incredible. She really let loose and let the scream go on this one... really impressive. This Way - my least favourite track from the new album... so not a highlight.. but it was ok. What's Simple is True - they've changed this slightly. The electric guitar part in the chorus really adds a lot I think. I liked it. Ok.. then the solo set started. At this point me and the people around me were screaming for Nicotine Love. I heard some other people too... thanks to all those who screamed because of my post. Instead she played: Everything Breaks - a gorgeous song. 'Nuff said. Then... again, more screaming for Nicotine Love. At that point she said something like "I'd love to play that but I don't remember it.. it's been years since I've played it".. or something like that. So then we said "we have the words!" and she was like "you have the words?". At that point everyone around me was like "go!!".. so I tried to find the lyrics and get my shit together.. but by the time I did and got to the stage she had moved on to.. Carnivore - I wasn't all that dissapointed, because this is an amazing song. It was a killer version.. although she left out a couple of lyrics at the end. And she changed some other lyrics as well. Violet Eyes - this is a really emotional song.. and there was not a peep out of the audience the whole time she was singing it. A definite highlight. Little Sister - nice... but I've heard it a lot Morning Song - ditto Cold Song - people got a kick out of this You Were Meant For Me - nice... nobody sang along much so she sang the whole thing without stopping to let the audience carry a verse or anything. then: Life Uncommon - amazing vocally. Down So Long - they've made this a little jazzier.. it's similar but (in my opinion) a better version than on the Spirit Tour. Definitely a major highlight Serve the Ego - weird. The bass seemed too high and was reverberating throughout the place. Jewel seemed annoyed by this and kept gesturing to the sound guy to fix it.. but I don't think he realised. Love Me, Just Leave Me Alone - at this point everybody rushed the stage and created a mini mosh-pit down front. She barely had to work to get people on their feet.. I think she was really happy about that. She was walking from one side of the stage to the other touching people's hands. Everybody Needs Someone Sometimes - another highlight.. really rocking New Wild West - AWESOME. Jewel and the band take this song to the absolute max. The lighting was fantastic too. Who Will Save Your Soul - the bass solo at the beginning was really cool. It almost turned into a whole 'nother song at one point, with the bassist and the drummer going really fast on this weird beat. It was really neat. Jewel's vocals were incredible. then.. Foolish Games - Jewel informed us that she had just been told that she had a very strict curfue of 11pm and was only going to be able to play one more song. She seemed irritated by this, as she seemed prepared to play several more. I was looking forward to the jazz covers too. But Foolish Games was amazing. Overall, it was an incredible concert. Better than the Spirit Tour in my opinion. The venue was better and more intimate, and Jewel was more into it. It's a shame that she didn't get to Nicotine Love.. but that's ok.. Carnivore was great. I have to say I felt like kind of a dork at the front of the stage with my pile of printed out pages with lyrics.. especially since she moved onto another song. But oh well. It was kinda funny. I have to say - one thing I've noticed the few times I've seen her in concert is that she's an extremely... sexual.. performer. I don't know how to explain it... it's not overt like Britney Spears or whatever... there's just this underlying sense of sexuality going on whenever she's onstage. Does anybody else notice this? I was talking about it with the person I took to the concert (who isn't a Jewel fan).. and she agreed with me. It's an interesting thing. Anybody have any comments? Anyway.. that's it. Sorry for the long post, but it was an exciting night! later Steve
