Comment: Good Evening and welcome to AOL Live. Tonight we have the pleasure Comment: of chatting with Jewel. Welcome Jewel we are so glad to have you Comment: here with us. You have a new album, "This Way" that is hitting the Comment: shelves on November 13th, how do you feel about it? Jewel Is Live: This is definately my favorite record. I've never been very comfortable Jewel Is Live: making records. I got to co-produce this record and finally by my fourth Jewel Is Live: record, I've learned enough about the process and have been able to Jewel Is Live: control it more. The end result is a record that is a lot more 'raw' than my past Jewel Is Live: records. LIVEBronwyn: AMM13JK wants to know... Question: Hi JEWEL your music is very nice.My favorite is ''STANDING STILL''.What Question: is your favorite songs or song you like to sing to. Jewel Is Live: On my own record, my favorite song "The New Wild West Question: In your book "a night without amor" what were yoyur influences? And Question: how long did you work on it? Jewel Is Live: That book has a collection of poetry from my age of 14 to when I published Jewel Is Live: it at the age of 24. Jewel Is Live: I've just always really enjoyed writing poetry. I wrote poetry before Jewel Is Live: I wrote songs or played the guitar. It's my first love. I put in a lot Jewel Is Live: of early poetry so people could see my growth as a writer so they Jewel Is Live: could see how I emerged as a writer and not just see my more sophisticated Jewel Is Live: writing. LIVEBronwyn: We have another question from a member, derekg75 wants to know Question: I heard your new album online. A couple of the songs sound like they Question: could be played on Country radio. I know you joked about it in the past, Question: but would you ever consider doing a crossover album, maybe some of your Question: favorites with some you wrote yourself? Jewel Is Live: I've always had a real strong country influence. This was something Jewel Is Live: people commented on on my first record with the song "Don't". I guess Jewel Is Live: it will always be a part of me in the end. I might do one or two Jewel Is Live: country songs but I'm not really concentrating on crossingover. Question: I have heard all of "This Way" and wanted to tell you I love it! Question: My favorite song is "Till We Run Out of Road". I heard that you Question: and your boyfriend TY wrote this song together. How did this come Question: about and how was the experience of working together? Jake Jewel Is Live: I wrote this song with Ty on New Year's Eve and I just wanted to show Jewel Is Live: him what it was like to write songs. He's a 'bull rider' so we wrote it about Jewel Is Live: him being on the rodeo trail. Jewel Is Live: We mention a man named Louie Field who is an all around champion cowboy. Jewel Is Live: When we were writing it, Ty wanted to be sure it didn't sound like a cliche Jewel Is Live: rodeo song. So if you listen to it, it also sounds like it could be about me Jewel Is Live: being on the rode or anyone who works hard. Question: Jewel, you are a singer/songwriter, actress, author and humanitarian. Question: Which role do you like best? Jewel Is Live: I really love switching! I like to switch because creativity is like a trustee in Jewel Is Live: charge of the creativity. Like the way farmers rotate crops. Jewel Is Live: I like to rotate jobs creatively. When I take a break from music it gives me time Jewel Is Live: to work on other jobs and then come back and write more music. I don't tend to act Jewel Is Live: in my free time, I tend to write songs and poetry. Jewel Is Live: That's really my preference. LIVEBronwyn: JewelyBug00 wants to know... Question: Hello Jewel, I want to say thank you first off on behalf of all the Question: eda's for the nashville event. It was incredible. Are you planning Question: on going on tour to promote "This Way" and if so, when? Jewel Is Live: I'm glad you enjoyed Nashville, I enjoyed it as well!!! Jewel Is Live: I will be going on tour, probably in the States around March or so. Jewel Is Live: And then I'll be going on to the rest of the world. Question: You have put out two books and have had three albums, almost all of Question: that material was written by you, where do you find your inspiration Question: for it all? Jewel Is Live: I've written way more than 3 albums and 2 books. I find it frustrating that I'm Jewel Is Live: not able to put records out more frequently. I think it would be fun to put a record Jewel Is Live: out every 6 months. Jewel Is Live: I just like writing a lot and tend to do it all the time. I sort of pick through Jewel Is Live: songs. Jewel Is Live: I tend to write a lot and my records and books are taken out of catalogs. LIVEBronwyn: AntsMarching4Me is wondering Question: Hello Jewel! I think that your music is fantastic! I was Question: wondering......will you ever write another book about yourself Question: of you great poetry. Your a great person. LOVE YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Question: Question: =) Jewel Is Live: I guess everything in a strange way is about myself! My records are either about Jewel Is Live: me or about how I see the world so I guess I'll continue to do the same. Jewel Is Live: Some songs are fiction but in a way they are about me. Question: First of all, I just would like to say you are a talented and gifted Question: musician. I wanted to know how a struggling artist can break-through. Question: What do you think is the best way possible to have new and orginal Question: music heard? Question: Thanks, Question: Diane Jewel Is Live: If you perform it yourself, get out and play it! Jewel Is Live: I really think by being the best you can be and refining your greatness is the best Jewel Is Live: thing you can do. It gets other to take notice. If you really stand out in your Jewel Is Live: community, people really take notice. It really worked for me. Jewel Is Live: I started out in San Diego that way. Jewel Is Live: Do it because you love it!!! LIVEBronwyn: CJPietka wonders Question: Jewel, did you ever feel pressured to drop your own style of music and Question: go mainstream, and if yes what prevented you from giving up what your Question: message? Jewel Is Live: My first record was created in an environment that was blissfully ignorant. Jewel Is Live: I never thought I would be competing on a top level of music where I was able to make Jewel Is Live: a record that I didn't feel obligated to meet radio standards. Of course, following Jewel Is Live: the success of "Pieces of You" I was introduced to competition. Jewel Is Live: I went through periods where I compared myself to what else was popular, whether Jewel Is Live: that was Nirvana or Britney Spears. I've definately looked in amazement Jewel Is Live: that there was room for me in radio. Jewel Is Live: I feel in the long run it pays off. One of the gifts of the success of "Piece of You" Jewel Is Live: was it taught me to value the gift of sincerity. Once I went through that process Jewel Is Live: I was able to 'put glasses' on with the way the industry works and do what I wanted Jewel Is Live: to do. I went to Nashville and did the record that I wanted to do. LIVEBronwyn: Member Fredsteve says Question: This Way got a good review in Rolling Stone this week. Do you read Question: the reviews or care what the critics say about your work? Jewel Is Live: I really don't read reviews anymore. My record label president called me 3 Jewel Is Live: yesterday and read me the review and said he was so excited, he wanted to Jewel Is Live: go home and read it over and over! I of course was thrilled but I'm also cautious Jewel Is Live: to accept praise or negative criticism on either side. Question: The song "Pieces of You" had a very strong politcal message, much of Question: your work seems to, can we expect the same from this new album? Jewel Is Live: There is definately songs with strong political sounds on this record. "Jesus Loves You", Jewel Is Live: "The New Wild West" and several lyrics scattered throughout some of the love songs Jewel Is Live: on the record. Jewel Is Live: It's a topic that I"ll always find interesting! Question: What is your holiday wish? Jewel Is Live: I haven't really thought about it yet! I hope to spend the holiday with my family. Question: I write music, but i still feel awkward about singing my songs infront Question: of people. Did you ever have this problem and if so how did u over Question: come this fear? thanks~ jackie Jewel Is Live: You're always nervous when you haven't been doing something very long Jewel Is Live: in front of people. It helps to perform in front of other people. Jewel Is Live: I used to get the hiccups in front of people on stage. I also went through a stage Jewel Is Live: where I would do anything short of picking my nose on stage! My dad would Jewel Is Live: also have to bribe me to move on stage. It took awhile, but now I'm very Jewel Is Live: comfortable on stage. In time, you find you're very excellent. Jewel Is Live: Just don't be afraid to be bold! People also find mistakes very Jewel Is Live: charming-they're very forgiving! Jewel Is Live: When I forget lyrics, people feel like you're human and they're very forgiving. LIVEBronwyn: Another member, EvanB wants to know Question: Thank you very much for continuing in your career. You have a uniquely Question: lovely voice and I've enjoyed listening to it for years. I understand Question: that you have been in a movie. Do you expect to continue with a career Question: making films? Any thoughts on musicals? Jewel Is Live: I'm staying away from musicals for now. I did audition for "Moulin Rouge" though! Jewel Is Live: I plan to do another movie this summer but I don't really have a script in mind. Jewel Is Live: It's hard to find a really smart script. Hopefully I'll find a script by the time I'm Jewel Is Live: ready to do a film, it's definately something I want to do. Comment: Member Bolo0708 says you are a great singer and he hopes you have Comment: great success with your new cd. Question: Who are your favorite artists? Jewel Is Live: Alicia Keys, I really like her. I like David Gray also. Jewel Is Live: Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen are great too. LIVEBronwyn: We are running out of time here unfortunately... a few last questions Question: Jewel so many women love your look! Do you have any secrets that you Question: could share with them? Jewel Is Live: My boyfriend always laughs at the fact that I have become a fashion icon... Jewel Is Live: I'm a bit of a smorgasbord! I tend to combine all of the wrong things! Jewel Is Live: I guess I'm like any girl, I don't take it too seriously..do whatever pleases you. Jewel Is Live: In junior high I wore silk pill box hats which made me very unpopular. Jewel Is Live: It's best to do your own thing. LIVEBronwyn: Our closing question is from Jpodraza3... Question: When you write a new song, who are you most likely to play it for Question: first? Jewel Is Live: It's been my boyfriend of the last 4 years. He has a great ear and is able to Jewel Is Live: be a good sounding board. He's able to hear songs that are unfinished and see Jewel Is Live: where I'm headed with it. He's a real good sounding board. Comment: Jewel it was so great to have you here, and certainly a huge thrill Comment: for me and the rest of your fans here at AOL. Do you have any Comment: closing comments? Jewel Is Live: It's always a pleasure! I love being in touch with people on the internet. Jewel Is Live: I like being in direct contact. I think one of the reasons I"ve been able Jewel Is Live: to have a career that lasted 4 albums is because my fan base is great to me. Jewel Is Live: It's always a great comfort to me that people will understand what I'm doing. Jewel Is Live: It's hard to have these songs played on pop stations so please call your local Jewel Is Live: radio stations and request these songs. "Who Will Save Your Soul" got Jewel Is Live: played on the radio because my fans called their stations! Especially in Jewel Is Live: Australia! Call your radio stations in Australia! Jewel Is Live: Goodbye and I look forward to seeing you all again! OnlineHost: Copyright 2001 America Online, Inc. All OnlineHost: Rights Reserved. With this week bringing an end to baseball and a beginning to basketball, patriotic songs are at a premium. But at Game 2 of the World Series, there was no anthem. Ray Charles did a rendition of America the Beautiful, instead. And God Bless America - crooned this week by Harry Connick Jr., at the Knicks' season opener and by Vanessa Williams at Game 2 of the series, to highlight just two - seems almost to have knocked the national song out of the country's consciousness since the terrorist attacks. It's become the new traditional seventh-inning-stretch tune. Still, it's Whitney Houston's 1991 Super Bowl version of Francis Scott Key's Star-Spangled Banner that has been the nation's best-selling single for weeks. But just about anyone who attempts to tackle the famous song will tell you it isn't easy. Jeffrey Osborne has sung the national anthem between 45 and 50 times at L.A. Lakers' games and has opened the Lakers' home season for 21 years, including Tuesday's game against Portland. "To me, it's not one of the greatest melodies ever written, so it tends to be kind of on the boring side. That's why singers try to do so much with it. But it's best if you try to stay as legitimate as you can," he says. Celebs taking a stab at the song through the years have had their star-spangled flubs. Roseanne Barr in 1990 was vilified for her now-historic off-key rendition at a San Diego Padres-Cincinnati Reds game, following it up with a crotch grab aimed at a booing audience. More recently, Macy Gray made news in her hometown of Canton, Ohio, when she attempted the song this summer at the National Football League's Hall of Fame game and forgot the words. "I blew it," she said. Jewel sang a sweet rendition to kick off the World Series Saturday in Arizona, but she explains that it's not as easy as it looks. The song covers a wide range, and the stadium presents sound problems. "It is hard because you can't hear yourself," she says. "I don't care how many times you've done it, your heart is still pounding. It's so loud, and you've got two baseball teams staring at you. No matter what, you feel a little bit out of your body. It's surreal. You're halfway through, and you're suddenly not sure what words you've been singing. It's a trippy experience." "It's a very awkward, difficult song," says opera star Denyce Graves, who sang the national anthem at World Series Game 4. She was also asked to sing its rival, God Bless America, which she says is "more melodic, more singable," at Game 5. Singing in a stadium can mean a delay of as much as a measure and a half, says Graves. "You remember Row, Row, Row Your Boat and singing it in a round? It's like that. You have to focus on your own voice and keep going." Jewel uses an ear monitor to hear her own voice, but last Saturday it was so loud that all she could hear was the crowd. Plus, the song itself covers an octave and a half, which requires most singers to switch registers. "Whitney Houston can belt it and hit those high notes. I sing it quieter and sweeter. You have to do it according to what your voice can handle." Vanessa Williams, who sang God Bless America at Tuesday's Lakers game, says singing at a sporting event right now is "very fulfilling. It's inspiring. People listen and sing along." The key, she says, is not to try improving on the original. "You scratch your head and say, 'How am I going to make mine different?' " Don't bother. "Get back to the essence of the song. It's about the country and how we're supposed to feel about our country." During the peak years of "grunge" music in 1995-1996, radio had little interest in a new musician like Jewel. It was extremely difficult to gain the attention of radio programmers, but it was the relentless enthusiasm of Jewel's online fans that accomplished what seemed impossible. The fans' personal crusade of calling radio stations to request "Who Will Save Your Soul" and "You Were Meant For Me" is what made all the difference and allowed Jewel to continue pursuing her dream. With the new album out soon and "Standing Still" gaining momentum on radio, MTV and VH1, it now is a time where your support is more critical than ever. Our new JeweLink Street Team members are already helping us greatly, but when it comes to calling radio stations, Jewel would certainly appreciate everyone's help. Calling your favorite local radio station and requesting "Standing Still" is the single most helpful thing any Jewel fan can do at the moment. Below, we have some radio request lines to assist those of you here in the states and in Australia, who would like to help with radio requests. Thanks and I leave you with this message from Jewel. MrBB Hey everyone, Well, here we are again. Radio wants to like my new single, but it's just too "different" sounding for many urban pop stations. This is where my grassroots army did so well in the past. If we flood them with calls or emails it makes a huge difference. Also, if any of you fans living in Australia want to email or call your local radio stations, that would be great. I love beating the odds! We'll soon be launching a brand new version of Jewel's website to coincide with the release of "This Way." You can expect a new look and improved navigation, in addition to the information, photos, contests, webstore and features you've enjoyed in the past. We're looking forward to serving you even better in 2002. In the meantime, Jewel continues planning her upcoming schedule here in the states and rehearsals with her new band are going well. Keep an eye on the www.jeweljk.com calendar, as it is now often updated multiple times a day. It's the best way to keep up on TV, radio and concert scheduling information. Now onto another one of your questions for Jewel. Today's question was submitted by JeweLink member Steve Hallowes. Steve asks: You've talked a lot about how all the touring and promotion that you had to do for Spirit kind of wore you out, made you very tired, and even made you reconsider whether or not you wanted to be in the music business anymore. I was just wondering what you planned on doing with the release of your new album to avoid that same thing happening over again? Jewel answers: I have learned to insist on pacing myself better; valuing the fact that for my art and writing I need to be able to get outdoors, amongst the open spaces that I relied upon in my youth. By doing this, I hope to be able to sustain myself and replenish the well so I can continue to write and work consistently. The other part is that I renewed a commitment to artistry and craft and songwriting, and to make each decision in my career in a way that nurtures those ideals, rather than trying simply to manufacture a song just for the sake of it being a hit. Thats it for today. We basically know all the information, but it gives a nice summary: Jewel Unveils Acclaimed "THIS WAY"; New Album Launches Amidst Flurry of Activity; First Single, "Standing Still," Moving Fast At Radio NEW YORK--(ENTERTAINMENT WIRE)--Nov. 12, 2001--"THIS WAY," the eagerly awaited new album from Atlantic recording artist Jewel, arrives in stores across North America tomorrow, November 13th. The new collection is Jewel's fourth album and her first set of all-new, self-penned material since 1998's RIAA quadruple-platinum "SPIRIT." "THIS WAY" was produced by Dann Huff and Jewel, marking her first work as a producer. "THIS WAY" is already reaping critical praise, highlighted by Rolling Stone's recent 3 1/2-star rave review. "The apparent simplicity of folk presents wondrously complex and sexy possibilities for Jewel. She's one of the most richly idiomatic female pop singers of her generation," writes critic James Hunter in the magazine's November 22nd issue. "With `THIS WAY,' Jewel continues on - elegant, earthy, engaged." The album has also just been acclaimed by Billboard: "`THIS WAY' is the 27-year-old singer/songwriter's most ambitious effort yet, illustrating her desire to take on the world's societal and political ills and color them with a variety of stylistic hues," states Chuck Taylor in the magazine's November 17th issue. The album's first single, "Standing Still" - with lyrics by Jewel and music by Jewel and Rick Nowels - is rapidly climbing the charts at multiple radio formats. As reported by BDS, the track is currently #8 at Adult Top 40, #12 at Modern Adult, and has bulleted into the Top 40 on the national pop chart. The "Standing Still" companion video - directed by Darren Grant (Craig David, Destiny's Child) - is now in rotation at VH1, where it is one of the top five most-played clips, as well at MTV, VH1, Much USA, and Nickelodeon. On Thursday, November 15th, Jewel will perform the song live on MTV's Total Request Live. Jewel - who sang the National Anthem at the opening game of the 2001 World Series, and has recently been seen on CBS-TV's Late Show With David Letterman, PBS' Life 360, and CNN's Larry King Live - is slated for a number of high-profile television appearances coinciding with the release of the new album. On Tuesday, November 13th, she will start the day in Los Angeles alongside Sean "P. Diddy" Combs as they announce the nominees for the 29th annual American Music Awards. Later that evening Jewel will celebrate the release of "THIS WAY" with a performance on NBC-TV's The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. On Saturday, November 17th, Jewel will appear on NBC-TV's Weekend Today, followed that night with a performance of the National Anthem at the World Heavyweight Title rematch between Hasim "The Rock" Rahman and Lennox Lewis in Las Vegas, set to air live on HBO Pay-Per-View at 9 PM EST. On Friday, November 23rd, Jewel will head back to New York City for an appearance on NBC-TV's Late Night With Conan O'Brien. Jewel will make further TV performances in December, including The Rosie O'Donnell Show on Wednesday, December 5th, CBS-TV's The Saturday Early Show on December 15th, a return visit to CNN's Larry King Live on Friday, December 21st, and a special Christmas Morning appearance on NBC-TV's Today on Tuesday, December 25th. In addition, she will perform at the annual My VH1 Music Awards '01 ceremonies, airing live on VH1 from Los Angeles' Shrine Auditorium on December 2nd. Jewel is also among the poets featured on the upcoming HBO special, Def Poetry Jam, set to premiere on Friday, December 14th. On November 14th, Jewel will perform at New York City's Irving Plaza as part of the New York Civil Liberties Union's 50th Anniversary celebration. Among those being honored at the event is director Ang Lee, who helmed Jewel's 1999 big-screen acting debut, Ride With The Devil). The next evening, November 15th, she will be among the honorees at the Sixth Annual Do Something Gala celebrating America's top young community leaders. The event - being held at New York City's Manhattan Center - will see Jewel receiving the 2001 Rolling Stone Do Something Award, alongside fellow award recipients Russell Simmons and Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY). Jewel - who can currently be seen on the cover of Vanity Fair's annual Music issue - will also make a series of radio-sponsored holiday concert appearances throughout December, including Q-95.5's Jingle Ball at Detroit's State Theatre on December 11th, Z100's Jingle Ball at New York City's Madison Square Garden on December 13th, Y-100's Jingle Ball at Miami's American Airlines Arena, the 95.7 KISSmas Freedom Bash at Denver's Pepsi Center on December 20th, and others to be announced. In September, AOL Music and Atlantic teamed for a major promotional campaign to launch "Standing Still" and to herald the November 13th release of "THIS WAY." The campaign covered all AOL Music properties, including AOL Music, ICQ, Netscape, Winamp, Spinner, and AIM Today. Jewel was named AOL's "Artist of the Month" for October, which included an exclusive interview and live performance, streaming video, a download of "Standing Still," and AOL Music's first-ever "Celebrity Radio" station, featuring tracks personally chosen by Jewel. November 13th will also see two of Jewel's other projects hitting the shelves, including the paperback edition of her best-selling second book, Chasing Down The Dawn (HarperCollins). This striking chronicle of an artist's turbulent life on the road - written primarily during the 1999 "SPIRIT" World Tour - includes photos taken by Jewel, images and poignant vignettes from her childhood in Alaska, and tales of challenges faced as a daughter, sister, young woman, and creative artist. In addition, Jewel's 1999 full-length home video, titled Jewel: A Life Uncommon, will be released on DVD and digitally remastered VHS. The autobiographical documentary features an hour of archival footage of the artist's life, both on and off the road, as well as revealing interviews and exclusive live performances. "THIS WAY" finds Jewel exploring the rich musical tapestry of Americana - from pop and folk to blues, country, and rock 'n' roll. At turns poignant and passionate, mischievous and high-spirited, political and private, the album is the artist's richest, most ambitious work to date. From the boisterous "Everybody Needs Someone Sometime" to the soaring "Break Me," this exceptionally gifted singer and songwriter displays the many different sides of her talent and her personality. In addition to the album's 12 studio tracks, "THIS WAY" includes two new bonus live performances, recorded earlier this year. The album was produced by Dann Huff and Jewel Kilcher, with Lenedra Carroll and Ron Shapiro serving as Executive Producers. Jewel's three previous albums - "PIECES OF YOU" (1995), "SPIRIT" (1998), and "JOY: A HOLIDAY COLLECTION" (1999) - have together sold over 23 million copies worldwide. "PIECES OF YOU" earned the prestigious Diamond Award from the RIAA for U.S. sales of 10 million units, and has passed the 11 million mark in America alone. Today's question was submitted by JeweLink member Marc Troglione. Marc asks: How hard has it been to come up with songs for the new album and is it your favorite album so far? Jewel answers: Not hard. Luckily I'm prolific. I have over 500 songs in my catalogue, and at least 4 or 5 (on this record) are really quite old. Like "Love Me Just Leave Me Alone," I wrote when I was 21 or so. "Sometimes It Be That Way" I wrote when I was 17 or 18. And the new ones like "Serve The Ego," "Jesus Loves You" and "Standing Still" were fun to write. This is definitely my favorite record because it shows my versatility. Thats it for today. Atlantic researched the problem that some people are experiencing and have put together a fix that users can access easily. The problem involves a file called the .dll file. The .dll file helps computers run certain types of screensavers. It appears that some computers that need the .dll, don't have it installed. To remedy this, you can go to the page below and download the file, install it and then try to install the screensaver. http://64.12.34.106/fix.html Give that a try. It should help in many cases. Anyone enjoying Jewel's new CD? Hint: Play it LOUD! "New Wild West" is even better with your walls vibrating. ;-) MrBB From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Sun Nov 18 19:39:15 2001 Received: from smoe.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by smoe.org (8.12.0.Beta16/8.12.0.Beta16) with ESMTP id fAJ0dERj019348 for ; Sun, 18 Nov 2001 19:39:14 -0500 (EST) Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.12.0.Beta16/8.12.0.Beta16/submit) id fAJ0dEoi019347 for jewel-news-outgoing; Sun, 18 Nov 2001 19:39:14 -0500 (EST) Message-Id: <200111190039.fAJ0dEoi019347@smoe.org> From: HMN333@aol.com Date: Sun, 18 Nov 2001 09:48:08 EST Subject: Jewel-News: USA Weekend Interview To: jewel@smoe.org Sender: owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk "JEWEL'S DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH" He's a lot country; she's a lot rock 'n' roll; the unlidely pairing of folk's sweetest singer and bull riding's toughest champion. BY DENNIS McCAFFERTY She's a pop singer whose ethereal style strikes that elusive balance between artistic and commercial success. He's a legend in the most rough-and-tumble of worlds: progressional bull riding. Is this the stuff of lasting romance? Apparently so. Recording artist Jewel and nine-time pro rodeo/bull riding champion Ty Murray have been together for more three years now - a long time for a young celeb couple. But beyond impressions of disparate universes, the couple has much in common. Both grew up with an appreciation of hard work; Jewel survived a hardscrabble upbringing in Homer, Alaska, then lived in her van as she pursued her musical career; Murray lived the genuine cowboy's life, helping his dad break colts on their Arizona ranch. And both are published authors, with Jewel's A Night without Armor (HARPERCOLLINS, $11) being one of the most popular books of poetry ever, at more than 800,000 in sales, and Murray capturing his reflections on rodeo in the recent Roughstock: The Mud, the Blood and the Beer (HEQUIMEDIA, $29.95). And both are busy these days. Jewel's new CD, This Way, was out Tuesday. Next SUnday, Murray will star in a rare major network broadcast of probull riding, as NBC presents the Bud Light World Challenge, pitting the world's top 45 bull riders against the top 30 bulls. Murray, widely considered the Michael Jordan of rodeo, will be the biggest star there. Between recording and bull riding sessins, Jewel and Murray recently shared their thoughts with USA WEEKEND on the finer points of rodeo, ranching and Songwriting 101. With the national TV exposure, pro bull riding is making a splash. Must seem like a long way from the days when people joked that you get a feww pack of chewing tobacco with the price of admission, huh? JEWEL: Some think it's just about some dumb guys getting on the bull and hanging on. They don't see the athletics involved, the smarts these guys have. You have to anticipate every move the bull makes. People who just look to "hang on" get killed. Now, it's getting huge. It fills 18,000 to 20,000 seats on a weekend night. It appeals to all kinds of sports fans: the skateboarders, the snowboarders, the NASCAR people... MURRAY: There are athletics involved, like she says. I did most every sport you could think of: football, baseball, basketball, wrestling. I even got into gymnastics because I thought it would improve my balance and coordination. When it comes to the stereotypes, there are still a lot of misconceptions. Bull riders are real honest people. What you see is what you get. But people who aren't familiar with rodeos think we only listen to country music, which isn't true. I'll listen to anything: Springsteen, Tina Turner... .. and Jewel, of course. MURRAY: Yeah! To the point where you've co-written a song with her that appears on the new CD called Until We Run Out of Road? JEWEL: Yes. We wrote it from his perspective. Rodeo and rock 'n' roll are similar - a lot of guys just beating their brains out, barely making a living at it. Few make it big. So we wrote about it, and he's a songwriter now. MURRAY: It was fun. At first, we figured the two of us would be the only people to hear the song. I have a little cabin down by the river and we stay there a lot. We were just sitting around the fire on New Year's Eve and she always has her guitar with her and she's always writing poems and songs in her notebook. So she goes, "why don't you and me write a song so I can show you the process?" I didn't think I was cut out for that, but she said, "Let's just do it, just for fun." At first, it seemed like just goofing around. But we really tried to write a good song after a while, and we worked on it all night. So, is this your second career? MURRAY: I don't think so! It was hard. The only reason we were a good team is that she knows how to write songs and I knew what we were writing about. Jewel seems to be fitting just great into your ranch in Stephenville, Texas, and the cowboy life. MURRAY: Yeah. The second time we got together, I took her on a camping trip with an old friend of mine. I had no idea about her growing up in a rugged place in Alaska. So we packed way up in the Sierra on horseback and slept by a stream and fished. The way she grew up, she made that look like a SUnday afternoon picnic. Same with the ranch. I have friends in New York who think they're on Mars when they get there. She can relax there with the grass and trees and the stream and write songs. JEWEL: It's a lot of work at the ranch, but it's fun. You have to earn your respect there. It's not just given to you. They don't let you be a brat there. I help build fences or weld pieces of pipe together. He has 2,000 acres. The truth is, rodeo cowboys aren't necessarily good at ranching or training horses. He's been teaching me to heel calves, which is unusual for guys in his profession. Really? You'd think that would be right up their alley. Jewel: That would be like saying an editor is good at writing. Many aren't Hey, no argument there! Sounds like you're ready to ride a bull, Jewel. Have you ever given one a spin? Jewel: No, I would killed instantly. He wouldn't let me if I wanted to. MURRAY: That's not me being a chauvinist. It's just a fact. Saying a woman can ride bulls is like saying a woman can play linebacker in the NFL. It's as dangerous a thing as you can do.. The concert will be broadcast live from the USS Enterprise aircraft carrier, back home in Norfolk, Virginia, from a mission in Afghanistan. Other than what's mentioned above and posted on the calendar, there's not much else to tell, so I'll use this opportunity to answer two of the most common questions we've received over the past week. By far, the most common question pertained to Jewel's performance on Garth Brooks' prime-time "Coast To Coast" special last Wednesday night. Everyone wanted to know the name of the song Jewel sang at Garth's request, following "Standing Still," and if it will be released. There are no current plans to release this performance, but the name of the song is "Someday Soon." This song was written in the 1960s by Canadian songwriter Ian Tyson, better known as half of the duo Ian & Sylvia. It's been covered by numerous singers over the years, with one of the more familiar versions released by Judy Collins. We've also received many questions about Jewel's plans for Europe. Coinciding with the release of her album in Europe toward the end of February 2002, Jewel will embark on a European Promo Tour to help promote the album, much like she's done in Australia, New Zealand, Japan and here in the states. She'll primarily be doing major media appearances (TV, radio, print interviews, etc.) and a concert at The Royal Festival Hall in London is scheduled for February 26th. Jewel plans to return to Europe several months later for a real concert tour and to play a few festivals. As more details are confirmed, we'll let you know and post them on the calendar at www.jeweljk.com. That's about it for today.
