There's plenty more TV added this month, including the Pantene Pro-Voice Concert from Central Park this past July, that many of you attended. Too much to mention here specifically, but check it out when you get a chance. I've also updated the setlist page with the recent concerts in San Diego, including both Jewel and Jillian Speer setlists from Humphrey's and Jewel's "Living Room Tour" adventure performing a private house concert to benefit HGH last Saturday. The setlist page link can be found near the top of the calendar. Watch for JeweLink newsletters over the course of the next few weeks. Much new info will be forthcoming from both Jewel and Lenedra. It's currently scheduled for a November 13th release date in North America and approximately a week earlier in Europe. Most other international markets will have it around this time, as well. You can also expect the first single to begin receiving radio play sometime in October. We had a real nice time at the recent Humphrey's concerts in San Diego and both shows were filmed and recorded for a future project in the works. We'll keep you informed as plans finalize over coming months. In closing today, we encourage you to check Jewel's wwww.jeweljk.com web site calendar often for up to the minute news and information. As activity and scheduling increases, it will be the best place to get current accurate info anytime. JeweLink activity will also increase but the calendar is available 24 hours a day and is updated on a daily basis. That's plenty for this edition of JeweLink. Several other new events will be posted on Jewel's web site calendar later today. We'll also be sending you more exciting news from both Jewel and Lenedra over the next few days. Stay tuned! Also, many of Jewel's "message songs" seem to resonate deeply with fans and Jewel receives many emails from people wanting to know what keeps her so grounded and focused. We are excited to announce that Lenedra Carroll, whom most of you know is Jewel's mother and manager, has written a book entitled The Architecture of All Abundance. Soon to be available, this is a wonderful, inspirational book that explains how Lenedra and Jewel approach business, spirituality and how the two are intertwined. Lenedra weaves together stories from her childhood and tales of adversity as a young adult, along with stories of her success and the development of Jewel's career. The wisdom Lenedra has come to know and live by shines through on every page. Ron Shapiro, executive vice president and GM of Atlantic Records says "Lenedra Carroll is a brave human being and business person. She has brought unusual calm and mutual respect to all of her business dealings, leaving me and many others with a vision for a better way. I have both witnessed and experienced the authenticity and the joy that comes from working with her." Jane Goodall, Ph.D., author of Reason for Hope states, "I was captivated by the music of Lenedra Carroll's prose. Her style of writing is that of a true storyteller. Her book is one that will help those who seek peace amidst the stress of the materialistic modern world." As members of JeweLink, we wanted to make sure you knew about this book before announcements of it's release. It should be available in bookstores on Sept. 17th and we will be giving you an update closer to that date of the best places to purchase it. --- You can help a friend subscribe by having them send a blank email to join-jewelink@list.jeweljk.com To view selected back issues of JeweLink, please visit the JeweLink Archive at the www.jeweljk.com calendar page. The set is Jewel's first album of all original material since 1998's "Spirit," which debuted at No. 3 on The Billboard 200 and has sold more than 3.5 million copies in the U.S. to date, according to SoundScan. "I wanted to focus on the craft of performing and songwriting," Jewel said in a statement. "I've always been a live musician, and I wanted my voice to shine through. At the same time, I hope to stay relevant as a writer, which means staying honest about where you are. The most important thing to me is maintaining my authenticity. I'll always be curious musically and want to try new things, but above all, I want the music to sound honest and good in 20 years." The album will be released Oct. 31 in Japan, Nov. 12 in Europe, and the following day in North America, Australia, and New Zealand. No official tour has yet been announced in support of "This Way," but Jewel does have a handful of appearances lined up. On Sept. 22, she will play alongside Alanis Morissette, Barenaked Ladies, and Shelby Lynne, among others, at Mixfest 2001 in Foxboro, Mass. She is also confirmed to play a concert celebrating the New York Civil Liberties Union on Nov. 14 at the city's Irving Plaza. -- Jonathan Cohen, N.Y. scott.evans [[mind is DISCONNECTED. but my heart is WIRED.]] AOL IM: sevans112 . We received many fascinating and humorous questions and the best of them will be submitted to Jewel. Some of her answers will be included in a project that's currently in progress. In the meantime, I can answer the #1 most common question. Hundreds of you asked when Jewel will begin her next tour. The plan is to promote Jewel's next album on TV and radio during the latter part of this year and then to begin the next concert touring phase in early 2002. JeweLink members will be the first to know confirmed dates and scheduling, so stick around! KIIS in Los Angeles produced a tribute version of U2's "Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out Of" and are also playing a tribute version of Enya's "Only Time" and Faith Hill's "Star-Spangled Banner." "We were looking for something to help, songs that touch the heart, that help you reflect and make you feel good," KIIS program director John Ivy said Friday (September 14). "We are playing tributes that make sense and don't sensationalize the events in any way. Our listeners are calling for them." WHFS in Washington, D.C., produced a version of Moby's "Porcelain" that opens with the line, "Freedom itself was attacked this morning," from President Bush's address to the nation. Other sound clips interspersed with Moby lyrics such as "In my dreams I'm dying all the time" include "there was chaos everywhere" and "firefighters were crying." The tribute can be heard on the station's Web site (www.whfs.com). WVRV in St. Louis produced a tribute version of Annie Lennox's "Why," and are also playing a tribute version of Don Henley's "In a New York Minute" and a new version of "God Bless the U.S.A." by Tom Pilcher. "The songs we are playing are incredibly powerful," WVRV program director Mark Edwards said Friday. "In all of my many years in radio, never have I seen more response from listeners. These songs are touching people very deeply." WBBN in Chicago is playing Whitney Houston's "Star-Spangled Banner" and a tribute version of Enrique Iglesias's "Hero." In New York, WHTZ is spinning a tribute version of Jewel's "Hands," and in Chicago, WKQX is playing a tribute version of Live's new "Overcome." Live dedicated "Overcome" to the tragedies' victims this week, their spokesperson said Thursday. The song, from their new album V, due Tuesday, is available for download at their Web site (www.friendsoflive.com). WBCN in Boston is playing the Live piano ballad without the added dialogue. "I think [the tributes] are cheesy," Oedipus, the rock station's program director, said Friday. "I am not putting Bush on my station. He doesn't like the music we play. The song alone has hit a chord with our audience. It is an amazing song. It gives me chills when I hear it." "Overcome" opens with singer Ed Kowalczyk singing, "Even though/ The world is bleeding/ But feeling just fine/ Alone in the castle/ Where we're always free to choose." The edited version includes Bush declaring, "Thousands of lives were suddenly ended by evil." A tribute version of Aerosmith's "Living on the Edge" has also received air time on some stations, while others are relying on Bruce Springsteen's "Born in the U.S.A." to pump up listeners' pride. Country singer Jo Dee Messina's "Bring on the Rain" has been edited into a tribute version being played on country stations around the world. "When I recorded that song, it felt deep but it was about personal heartache," Messina told the Associated Press. "To know that the song also can relate to such a massive destruction, it gives the song an entirely new dimension. To have this song be a part of all of us uniting, feeling and connecting, is a massive deal for me." KCRW in the Los Angeles area, home to "Morning Becomes Eclectic" and the syndicated "Sounds Eclectic" shows, dedicated its airwaves to news coverage until Friday morning, when music director Nic Harcourt hosted a special show. Harcourt played songs such as Jeff Buckley's "Hallelujah," Simon and Garfunkel's "America" and Joni Mitchell's "Come in from the Cold" on the show, an hour of which can be heard on the station's Web site (www.kcrw.com). "During this day of remembrance and national prayer," Harcourt said, "I felt it was important to program music that reflected the emotions and feelings many of us have experienced during the last week, music that could express sympathy, sorrow, strength and hope. It is my belief that music can help us heal." KCRW's Cathy Tamkin will host a second show dedicated to the tragedies at midnight Friday and said she will include PJ Harvey's "This Mess We're In," Belle & Sebastian's "I Fought in a War" and Bob Marley's "So Much Trouble in the World" on her show. Television stations are also including musical tributes in their coverage of the attacks. WNBC, New York's NBC affiliate, played Bruce Springsteen's version of "We Shall Overcome" during one of its segments. Others have also used Pilcher's "God Bless the U.S.A." scott.evans [[mind is DISCONNECTED. but my heart is WIRED.]] AOL IM: sevans112 . Yahoo! Murder ballads and blues primarily. Territory not often explored. These original songs seemed to generate their own authenticity. Dark and gloomy, surpassing even Richard Thompson proportions at times, but simultaneously passionate, sung in a voice that transported me to another time and place. I'm describing my initial reaction to Oh Susanna (AKA Suzie Ungerleider), who I'm pleased to welcome as our new featured guest artist at Jewel's web site. Since that homegrown cassette release, Oh Susanna has released two remarkable CDs, each a big step forward and I highly recommend both of them. In recent years, she's toured extensively throughout North America, on her own and as part of the legendary Scrappy Bitches tour, which also featured Veda Hille and Kinnie Starr. Oh Susanna's music taps into the ghostly past of America and does so with the resonance few other Canadians have achieved, a few of the notable exceptions being The Band, Neil Young and Joni Mitchell. We invite you to educate yourself about this artist and experience her music. Stop by the www.jeweljk.com Guest Artist pages and have a look and listen. Features and information about many highly recommended artists are now available there and you're sure to discover intriguing people, while enjoying links to audio and more. We're looking forward to sharing the music of Oh Susanna with you this month. Jewel radio tour information for next week and additional Lenedra Carroll information in upcoming JeweLink messages. Also many are writing me asking if the annual WMBX Mixfest was cancelled due to terrorism threats. I really don't know the answer to this question, but with it being a big high profile outdoor stadium event with many artists, and the current state of the nation, that doesn't sound out of the realm of possibility. If you want to keep up on Jewel TV and radio, I suggest checking Jewel's website calendar often. Updates and changes are occuring faster than we can get JeweLink messages together, but the calendar is almost always updated quickly. (It's been updated six times already today!) Look for next week's radio station tour in Friday's JeweLink and don't forget Letterman tomorrow night. The Alaskan singer/songwriter's last full-fledged album of original songs, 1998's Spirit, packed synthesizers and other pop slickness onto the homespun acoustic sound of her debut, 1995's Pieces of You. This time, it seems, Jewel was looking for some middle ground. "I really wanted to do an eclectic record, a record that stayed raw and didn't become slick or really overproduced," she said backstage at this month's MTV Video Music Awards. The album isn't due until November 13, but Jewel has already shot a video for the album's first single, "Standing Still," with director Darren Grant (Destiny's Child, Aaliyah). The song, which is just beginning to get radio play, combines melancholy lyrics with music Jewel pegged as "peppy." "It's sort of about being on the road and doing a show and about missing someone," she said. "My boyfriend got to be in [the video], so I was excited." The video is due out soon, according to Atlantic Records. Jewel also managed to pare down the Dylan-evoking blues-rock track "Love Me Just Leave Me Alone" enough to include it on the album. The track has become a fan favorite at live performances. "I cleaned up the drums a little bit, [and] I did a slide guitar [part] on the first verse," Jewel said. "There's a lot of verses, classic Dylan style. There are like 1,500 verses, and I'm terrible at it - I just always write too many verses. So we had to figure out a way to get more verses in and change it up." The album also includes the "sweet" love song "Break Me," along with such tracks as "'Til We Run Out of Road" (co-written with Jewel's boyfriend, rodeo star Ty Murray) and "Serve the Ego." Itaal Shur, co-writer of the Santana smash "Smooth," helped write "Serve the Ego," which boasts Indian-flavored backing, a minor-key melody and the cynical refrain "Get on your hands and knees/ And praise the new deity/ Serve the ego" (see "Jewel Cutting 'Dangerous' Tracks For Next Record"). Jewel recorded This Way in Nashville, enlisting the help of veteran producer Dann Huff (Megadeth, Faith Hill). "I liked the Megadeth background tremendously," Jewel joked. "But he's really talented as a musician. He's a guitarist, and he has a great ear, really great versatility and a great attitude. We hit it off very well." After doing isolated promotional dates this year - including a "Late Show With David Letterman" appearance Thursday night (September 20) - Jewel hopes to mount a full-fledged theater tour in early 2002, she said. -------------- Chris. http://www.jewelfan.co.uk : Jewel - Pieces Of UK From owner-jewel-news@smoe.org Fri Sep 21 05:06:00 2001 Received: from smoe.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by smoe.org (8.12.0.Beta16/8.12.0.Beta16) with ESMTP id f8L95uv1020551 for ; Fri, 21 Sep 2001 05:05:56 -0400 (EDT) Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.12.0.Beta16/8.12.0.Beta16/submit) id f8L95tTn020550 for jewel-news-outgoing; Fri, 21 Sep 2001 05:05:55 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <200109210905.f8L95tTn020550@smoe.org> From: "FabioJJ" To: Subject: Jewel-News: Pics of Jewel at Z100!!!!!!! It's a very detailed, very well-updated website. It has a RealAudio version of Standing Still (for all those who haven't heard it).. and it also has detailed statistics about specific radio airplay. I thought I was share with you guys the information that they have on the single, and how it's been doing. Bear in mind they don't give ALL the radio play info for all the different formats.. just the top few songs.. Standing Still has been showing up consistently in the Modern Adult and Adult Top 40 Sections of the chart. MODERN ADULT: Standing Still is playing on 12 stations (this number has been going up everyday) out of a possible 45 stations. Between Sept. the 19th and Sept. the 25th it had 117 spins on those 12 stations. The #1 song in Modern Adult generally gets about 1000-2000 spins a week. So for a debut week, Standing Still did very well. ADULT TOP 40: Standing Still is playing on 22 stations out of a possible 82 stations. It's had 129 spins on those 22 stations this week, and the top song usually gets around 3000 spins a week. So again, good. Now.. some of the Adult Top 40 Stations are the same as the Modern Adult Stations, but Adult Top 40 also includes Adult Contemporary. I know this is kind of confusing.. but yeah. Also, in the Adult Top 40/Modern Adult/Adult Contemporary sub-section of the website Standing Still was registered at the hottest pick for the top radio programmers around the country.... meaning that more radio programmers around the country picked her song as opposed to the other new songs. I'll keep you guys posted on this. Soon she'll start showing up on the Mainstream Top 40 charts, so I'll let you know more when that happens. Jewel's brother Shane, and the team members working there, thought the EDAs would enjoy knowing what's been going on lately. Shane asked that I pass on this message to you. MrBB Greetings EDAs, Tibet was phenomenal! We got an amazing amount of work done in a very short amount of time. Everyone from the villages of Zingma and Gangchen, including people from the Gangchen monastery, turned out in droves to help with this community project. In all, about eight miles of trench were dug (by hand). Over six miles of galvanized steel pipe, and about two miles of HDP (plastic) pipe were laid. The community built an impoundment enclosure (a small dam) to house the water treatment and hydro generation equipment, a giant stone-block clean water storage tank, the foundation for an even larger irrigation water storage tank, about twelve community tap stands, and all the necessary piping for an impressive irrigation system! We also stocked the small, contaminated pond that had previously supplied much of the communities drinking water, with carp. The carp is an incredible fish that is capable of surviving almost anywhere. The carp will eat the parasites and clean the pond! This is probably one of the most comprehensive projects that the Clearwater Project has ever been involved with and the impact that it is having on the community is nothing short of transformational. It was staggering to be there and to see first hand exactly what this project means to them. We are already receiving testimonials of improved health, and the project is not even complete yet! A team will be returning to Tibet soon to finish the project. In addition to community planning and education, they will oversee the completion of the irrigation system which will allow the community to grow a wide variety of food and raise a cash crop for the maintenance of the system. The team will also finalize the installation of the hydropower unit and the ultraviolet sanitization units. I can't wait to see how these communities change and continue to grow. I'll keep you updated as the project progresses. I woke up to hundreds of emails today and it's understandable why, what with Atlantic mistakenly posting incorrect information on their website. Yes, believe it or not, the info you guys are understandably getting excited about is mistaken. Other than Japan, Jewel's album is NOT being released on October 30th and will be released domestically, as we've been telling you all along, on November 13th. Additionally, the tracklist posted on the Atlantic site last night is also incorrect. We have every intention of telling you the accurate tracklist in the correct running order, but for obvious reasons, we want to tell you accurate information. That info will probably be coming sooner than expected now, so hang in there a little while longer. As for the live bonus tracks, yes there will be some and quite likely they will differ in various areas of the world, so any specific information currently circulating about live bonus tracks, including Atlantic's website, is certainly possible but just as likely mistaken. How do these things happen? Beats me, but I did want the EDAs to know the reality, before wrong info continues to spread to your websites and elsewhere. You'll likely see the mistaken info disappear from Atlantic's site over the weekend. Needless to say, it's never dull around here! Enjoy your weekend, MrBB
